HIGHFIELD’S GUARDIAN - PETER CACCIA-BIRCH
A cherished figure in the Snells Beach and Algies Bay communities, Peter CacciaBirch is a man whose decades of volunteer work and commitment to the natural environment has left an enduring mark on the region.
Photo Amy Hamblett
As the volunteer manager of Highfield Garden Reserve, Peter has devoted countless hours to preserving and enhancing this special place. Thanks to his tireless efforts, the reserve today is a beloved sanctuary for locals and visitors alike, offering serene gardens, a community orchard, scenic trails, and the joy of interacting with the resident donkeys.
Highfield Garden Reserve owes its origins to Alison Roberts and her husband Ted, who generously gifted the land to the people of New Zealand in the 1990s, intending it to be enjoyed by the community and remain home to their special breed of donkeys. But it was Peter who transformed the reserve into the vibrant and inviting space it is today. Since he and his wife Val moved to Snells Beach 30 years ago, Peter, now 85, has
dedicated himself to the reserve, working alongside volunteers to maintain its beauty a nd accessibility.
Under Peter’s guidance, Highfield has flourished as a community hub, attracting over 10,000 visitors a year. Many come for the family-friendly events co-sponsored with the Council - which feature donkey rides, games, and barbecues - others for the beautiful scenery and to meet the infamous donkeys. A former sheep and beef farmer, Peter has lovingly tended the reserve’s seven donkeys every day, rain or shine. He coordinates a team of volunteers who help with grooming every Tuesday and liaises with vets when required, including with the unexpected loss of beloved foal Titan earlier this year.
Peter has also brought his passion for the environment and expertise to the reserve’s landscape, leading the ongoing restoration of native groves over Highfield’s 20 acres.
Peter knows every native tree, from its age to whether it was planted or self-seeded. Volunteers, with direction from Peter, gather weekly to plant, prune, and share stories over a morning’s work. He even supervises people completing Community Service hours, who help maintain the grounds under his pati ent guidance.
Peter’s contributions to the community extend beyond Highfield. In 2009, he and volunteers from the Goodall-Te Whau Committee undertook the restoration of land between Goodall Reserve and Dawsons Landing - adding another important amenity to the community and helping restore its ecosystem. Public service and a love of nature runs in the family: Peter’s father, Tom Birch, was one of the founders of the New Zealand Forest Service, while his maternal grandfather was Colonel Guy Powles and his uncle the distinguished Sir Guy Powles.
Recognised with numerous awards, including the Queen’s Service Medal in 2021 and a recent documentary about him made by students from Auckland University of Technology, Peter’s selfless contributions are deeply appreciated by those whose lives he’s touched. Jenny van der Mespel, granddaughter of Alison Roberts, described him as “a kind, considerate, thoughtful, concerned, involved, committed man... truly a blessing to us all.” She also noted, “Highfield Garden Reserve and the Highfield Donkeys would not be the local treasures that they are if not for Peter.”
Thanks to Peter and his team of dedicated volunteers, the local community and visitors can feed a family of donkeys, harvest from the community orchard, explore the reserve of native trees, or meander with their family and delight in the panorama from Tawharanui Peninsula to Kawau Island.

TAYLOR CABINETMAKER
LOVE, FAMILY AND INNOVATION - EDWARDS & CO
Well-known in New Zealand's baby product industry, Edwards & Co was born from founder Mark Edwards’ desire to make life easier for parents.
After witnessing a frustrated grandparent struggling to fold a bulky pram, eventually abandoning it on the roadside, Mark was struck with a revelation. He approached his father Warwick and husband Christian with an idea – what if they created their own business to make prams easier?
For someone with a background in corporate HR, freshly returned from Australia, remortgaging his home to finance a brand-new venture from a cowshed, was an immense leap into uncharted waters. It wasn’t smooth sailing, either.
The industry was fiercely competitive, requiring a significant investment of Mark’s personal resources. Mark threw his energies into showcasing his products at baby expos and country pubs. The first year they sold 100 prams; the next, 120. That was the point where Mark decided to redesign the whole range, a process that took three years. His own experience as a parent, along with feedback from other parents, led to the creation of products like the Oscar stroller, which quickly became the brand’s flagship due to its adaptability and thoughtful design. Each product reflects a personal touch, as Mark envisions items he and his husband would want to use with their own children. This approach has earned the brand a reputation for balancing convenience w ith style.
Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Edwards & Co has experienced rapid growth, even doubling sales in 2020, and this year acquired Cariboo, a respected New Zealand-based brand known for its sustainable, high-quality nursery furniture. This addition broadens Edwards & Co’s product offerings, allowing the company to support parents further by providing essentials beyond baby transport. Cariboo’s focus on natural materials and craftsmanship aligns seamlessly with Edwards & Co’s values.
A deeply personal aspect of Edwards & Co’s story is the surrogacy journey of Mark and his husband, Christian. The couple’s path to parenthood was marked by resilience and a profound desire to create a family. Their experiences led them to launch Love Makes a Family, a not-forprofit platform aimed at raising awareness and providing resources for other families navigating surrogacy and alternative paths to parenthood. Through Love Makes a Family, Mark and Christian share their journey and connect with other parents who
have taken similar paths, offering support and fostering a sense of community. What sets Edwards & Co apart is its focus on building a community where parents feel supported, with high-quality, thoughtfully designed products and knowledge. The strollers and accessories are crafted to empower families to embrace their adventures together with ease. With an increasing following in Australia, Edw ards & C o has grown from a family business into a trusted resource for families across borders. This commitment to family and community is also evident in the brand’s ongoing charitable efforts, from donating products for raffles to supporting groups like Nurturing Families, Starship Hospital, and the I Have A Dream Foundation.
“As a boutique, family-owned company we understand the ride, because we’ve lived it. We’ve learned, first-hand, the pressures, the frustrations and the joys and seen what matters most. So our design decisions aren’t shaped by global markets, supply chain efficiencies, profit margins or market research. Instead, they come from genuine love and understanding of the little people that will ride in our prams – and the bigger ones that will push them,” Mark says. www.EdwardsAndCo.nz www.instagram.com/EdwardsAndCoBaby

THE COMMUNITY DRIVING LOCAL SANTA PARADES
Each Santa Parade brings a unique local touch to Christmas traditions, creating a celebration that has warmed the hearts of Kiwis for generations. Soon, the streets will be alive with the sparkle of festive floats, the jingle of bells, and, of course, a visit from Santa himself.
Wellsford kicked off the holiday season in style, marking the beginning of Santa parades across the region on the last Saturday of November. Rachel, from the organising committee, describes the Wellsford Christmas parade as capturing a true Kiwi vibe, with surprises at every turn - tractors, trailers, and kids walking t he parade.
Meanwhile, in Mangawhai, preparations are underway for the sixth annual Mangawhai Santa Parade, a cherished community event led by the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ). Starting from the estuary at Alamar Crescent, the parade winds through town, passing local shops and climbing the hill near the golf course before ending at MAZ. There, Santa will greet fans, hand out gifts, and kick off a Christmas concert featuring local performers. A highlight of this parade is Santa’s sleigh, a true community masterpiece. Built by
the Mangawhai Shed team and painted by local artist Nicola Everett, the sleigh was introduced last year and has quickly become a beloved symbol of Mangawhai’s creativity.
In Warkworth, last year’s Santa parade had the biggest turnout yet. “Anyone can join,” says Murray Chapman, event organiser from One Mahurangi. “You can dress up a car or have the kids walk in the parade,” as long as they’re registered. Chapman and his team are committed to keeping the day affordable. “We just wanted to do something that wasn’t gonna cost the families anything,” he explains, noting the financial pressures of the season. Families can enjoy the festivities without cost, aside from optional treats from Mr. Whippy, food trucks, and face painting. For Chapman, who has organised the parade for eight years, the joy is in the children’s reactions “The look on their faces - i t’s magic.”
Waipu then comes alive on Christmas Eve for the Waipu Christmas Parade, a cherished event dating all the way back to 1956. Peter Gibb, chairman of Promote Waipu, says, “It’s a tradition that’s deeply rooted in the community’s identitythere’s a real heart to it.” Gibb, involved in organising the parade for several years, shared the challenges, from traffic management to float preparation. “We tried to consider moving the date for easier traffic control,” he explained, “but the community was adamant - Christmas Eve is non-negotiable.” Despite the months of planning and countless volunteers, the Waipu parade remains a beloved Christmas Eve tradition.
For date and time details on these wonderful local Santa Parades refer to our Local Christmas Events Guide on page 20.

Sawmill Brewery celebrates its 20th anniversary, reflecting on two decades of growth, sustainability, and local influence.
Founded in 2004 by Peter and Decima Freckleton, Sawmill Brewery began in a modest shed adjacent to the Leigh Sawmill Café. Named after the site's timber mill origins, the brewery was set up with repurposed dairy farm tanks and a handson, DIY approach.
When Peter and Decima considered selling in 2009, Matakana newcomers Mike Sutherland and Kirsty McKay saw potential after a chance meeting; they took a leap and four weeks later acquired the brewery. The couple recall long hours learning the craft in the isolated brewery, saying that the absence of other breweries nearby is what ended up shaping Sawmill’s identity. “Rather than looking at what other
breweries were doing, we made our own decisions,” Kirsty reflects. “The more you do that the more confident you become.”
Sawmill has since evolved from its humble beginnings into an industry leader, celebrated for its quality and innovation. Their story isn’t just about brewing - it’s about championing a responsible approach to business and sustainability. In 2019, Sawmill became New Zealand’s first B Corp-certified brewery, and this year won the Brewers Guild Sustainability Award for the fifth year running - the longest trophy winning streak in the Award’s history.
Today, Sawmill Brewery champions multiple innovative manufacturing initiatives, including
Precision Skin Cancer Care
capturing 2 million litres of rainwater annually, using solar energy to power 17% of operations (set to increase to 60% in 2025), and carbon recapture to recover CO2 from fermentation. The brewery's landfill contributions average just 11kg weekly - less than a typical household - while extensive tree planting and habitat protection efforts, in partnership with Forest Bridge Trust, support local ecosystems. Reducing packaging weight, composting, and their ‘borrow-a-flagon’ system further reduce waste. Additionally, a state-of-the-art wastewater system is under construction to capture biogas for process heat, with projected savings of 90,000 litres of LPG annually.
Looking ahead, Sawmill will continue to balance the rich tradition of brewing with forward-thinking, innovative practices. Emphasising that meaningful change requires industry-wide efforts, Mike explains, “Real momentum comes when we show that these changes not only benefit the environment but make good bus iness sense.”
As Sawmill Brewery raises a glass to 20 years, they celebrate their journey from a small shed in Leigh to a pioneering force in New Zealand’s brewing industry, committed to quality, sustainability, and community. Cheers to many more years of good beers and positive change.

MANGAWHAI’S MOBILE SEAFOOD SENSATION
Born from humble beginnings, Little Red Fish - a beloved seafood concept with deep roots in Mangawhai - is once again swimming upstream, now housed in a custom-built food trailer ready to bring its fresh flavours to new locations.
Operated by Mike and Ness, alongside their other business, Vintage Market Deli, Little Red Fish quickly earned a loyal following among locals when it launched as a fresh fish and seafood caravan at the Mangawhai Tavern Market. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the duo adapted to the challenging times and were able to offer fresh and frozen seafood through the right channels, ensuring Mangawhai residents could still enjoy quality seafood despite the restrictions. As life began to return to normal, Mike and Ness took a lease on a fixed food trailer on Wood Street in Mangawhai Heads, where Little Red Fish swam once again. Continuing to offer fresh fish and seafood they also added a dedicated seafood menu for brunch and lunch. When the quieter winter months arrived they adjusted their hours and menu to offer evening meals, serving top-quality fish with double-dipped chunky fries and a dedicated seafood
menu. Mike, having been a registered buyer at the Auckland Fish Markets is able to source the freshest catches from the auctions - keeping the quality of the menu consistently high and earning them a stellar five-star rating on Google.
When the lease on Wood Street ended, Mike and Ness took a bold step, investing in a custom-built mobile food trailer. Now, Little Red Fish can keep swimming while bringing its quality dining experience to all who love seafood at more than one location. Little Red Fish can be found at multiple sites throughout Mangawhai, including outside the Mangawhai Library Hall on Thursday and Friday evenings from 5pm, at the Mangawhai Tavern Market every Saturday morning from 8:30am to 1pm, at the Mangawhai Activity Zone on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 5pm, and monthly at the Marsden Cove Marina Market. More locations and dates are expected to be added soon which will be
shared on their Facebook page, along with regular menu updates and chef's specials. The menu features a tempting array of seafood dishes alongside their standard fresh fish meals, which always include snapper, gurnard, and tarakihi. Chef's specials add even more variety, with dishes like tempura-battered tiger prawns with Asian slaw and sesame-seared salmon with Pad Thai noodles, as well as Mike’s signature seared scallops with chorizo, pine nuts, and red onion - ensuring a wide range of delicious choices for seafood lovers.
In addition to its regular offerings, Little Red Fish and Vintage Market Deli are available for on-site catering, perfect for special occasions and gatherings. This summer, Mike and Ness invite you to visit one of their many locations for a memorable seafood experience that celebrates the flavours of the ocean.

THE TREEHOUSE
Finalist in the 2024 BEST Awards for Residential Architecture and the 2023 HOME Interior of the Year Awards, this sustainable family home is a forward-thinking project by Jo Aitken, Principal Architect of Atelier Aitken.
Images Simon Wilson
In response to the growing pressures of rising living costs and environmental concerns this project aimed to make sustainable, high-quality architecture more affordable and accessible to New Zealand families. “I believe that attempting to address these issues has become an important part of the job,” comments Jo.
Sustainability played a key role throughout, with Jo’s clients keen to explore prefabricated design as a solution for the local market. The vision was to create a home that could serve as a model for others, designed with flexibility in mind to suit various family needs and site conditions; informing much of the design process, as well as engineering.
The client also sought a home with a strong social focus, seamless connections to the outdoors, limited technology, and the capacity to accommodate large gatherings. Drawing from their time spent living in Japan, the desire was a design that reminded them of Japan while creating a sense of home.
Atelier Aitken responded by developing a modular design, based on a 6m x 6m grid where every element fits within the modular system. This modular approach not only minimises construction waste but also provides the flexibility to easily scale and adapt the design to various configurations.
The client’s desire for Japanese influences provided both conceptual and practical inspiration. Known for its modularity, wood craftsmanship, and strong connection to nature, traditional Japanese architecture informed many aspects of the design. Timber was selected as the main building material for both environmental and aesthetic reasons. Timber slats throughout the house nod to Japanese influence and offer an elegant solution for providing shade and privacy, while traditional Japanese wood-joining techniques influenced the structure and junction detailing, engineered by Constructure.
Located just north of Mangawhai, the home complements its rural surroundings with an intentional simplicity. All elements were sustainably and locally sourced where possible with timber for the ceilings sourced on site and milled by the clients. Known as ‘The Treehouse,’ the home’s name reflects the removal of trees that had previously blocked sunlight from the site. Native planting along the northern boundary adds privacy, while the home opens out to expansive farmland to the east, south, a nd west.
Dig, Grade, Roll and Deliver
The home’s layout creates distinct private realms for the master suite and children’s suite, connected by a larger social area, the public space, in the centre. The boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces are intentionally ambiguous, allowing life to flow effortlessly between the two. A translucent canopy extending over the kitchen and dining areas, creates sheltered outdoor living, perfect for gatherings or play even in poor weather, and allows sunlight to really transform the space from early morning until night fall.
Inside, the home is a study in simplicity. The bedrooms are minimalist, wood-lined spaces, featuring unadorned walls, paper lanterns, and high-quality linens. The bathing areas feel like Japanese onsens, with two outdoor showers and two indoor showers that can open up completely to the outdoors. An outdoor zen garden designed for starlit relaxation completes the home.
“When designing, I pay careful attention to the dimensions and geometry, to ensure that the home is not only more sustainable but also more beautiful," says Jo. Grounded in simplicity, elegance, and environmental responsibility, ‘The Treehouse’ is a true reflection of this philosophy.

A DECADE OF SEAMLESS DESIGN AND BUILD
Created from a belief that building should not be complicated and architectural design can be accessible to all, MyPad is celebrating 10 years in business with the launch of a new website and adding three new plans to their collection.
Driven by a desire to tilt the complex building process on its head, founder Sarah Ling believed that architectural design and build could be authored under one roof, keeping the experience simple and enjoyable for everyone involvedclient, designer and builder.
MyPad has redefined the traditional building process with its seamless approach, setting them apart in the industry. Clients choose a floor plan from the MyPad collection and shape it to suit their needs. Each classic footprint has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with options to add a covered outdoor living area, third or fourth bedrooms, kitchen extension, utility, sleepout, or boatshed. Every MyPad is an expression of its homeowner, with an emphasis on natural light, functional spaces, and seamless integration with t he environment.
Driven by solutions, Sarah has shown how this pared-back approach has filled a much-anticipated gap in the Mangawhai market for architectural brilliance at a set price. “It is a privilege to guide clients through their building process,” Sarah says, demonstrating her commitment through 10 years of delivering exceptional homes and baches in the Mangawhai region.
The first MyPad, built in 2014, was created for the Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust and auctioned to raise funds for the community outdoor park. “It was a very fortunate move for us and we were extremely happy with the finished beachside home,” says Chairperson Colin Gallagher. “The simple functional design made it easy to sell.”
Images Kate Little Photography + Jonny Davis
Clients Steve and Lee moved to Mangawhai in 2016 and wanted to use a local builder. After viewing the MAZ charity build they chose MyPad for its simple, stylish design and quality materials. A few years later, they decided to move to a more rural area but felt torn; as Lee puts it, "Once we’d lived in a MyPad we only ever wanted to live in a MyPad”. As if by fate, a MyPad became available in rural Mangawhai, and Steve and Lee jumped at the opportunity.
As MyPad celebrates its tenth anniversary, Sarah and her team remain committed to simplifying the building journey without compromising on style or quality. With their expanded collection, new website, and a decade of success stories, MyPad continues to shape Mangawhai’s landscape, crafting spaces that resonate with clients’ uni que visions.

The current owners originally intended the home to be a bach, but drawn to the area's natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle, they wanted to transform their weekend getaway into a permanent residence. The existing structure needed a lot of work to become the dream home they envisioned. We had to find a way to seamlessly blend the old with the new, and create a harmonious living space that maximises the breathtaking har bour views.
How did the ABC team approach the renovation?
We needed to modernise the home, preserving its unique features while improving its overall functionality. The ABC team managed to retain the original timber floors and open up the existing middle section of the home, creating a sense of continuity between the old and new. The design was carefully crafted to frame the panoramic views of the Sandspit harbour, ensuring that the owners can enjoy the stunning scenery from every corner of t he house.
What are some of the standout features of this project?
The home is clad in Siberian larch, a durable wooden cladding system with distinct grain patterns and warm tones that add a natural charm to the house’s exterior. The two living areas and outdoor spaces mean that there is plenty of room to entertain yearround. Warm wood tones dominate the interior, adding a cosy and inviting atmosphere to this three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. The master bedroom, elevated on a cantilevered deck, offers a truly exceptional experience, allowing the owners to wake up to stunning views across the water.
What challenges did the construction team face?
The construction process presented several challenges, given the tight access to the site. The team had to navigate around the existing building to excavate for the foundations and replace the septic tank. The weight of the new wastewater system required careful planning and the use of specialised equipment to avoid damaging the surrounding structures.
Protecting the middle section of the home, which had been previously renovated, while opening up both sides posed another hurdle. Finally, the installation of two concrete water tanks beneath the house had to be carefully coordinated due to limited dri veway access.
Despite the challenges we’re very happy with how the project turned out and the client loves their new home. www.ABC-Ltd.co.nz

GARDENING CALENDAR
The festive season brings together loved ones for feasting, hosting, and celebrating summer outdoors. This time of year is all about planting and harvesting fresh produce to enjoy during long sunny days. Whether you’re whipping up a simple salad or entertaining guests with homegrown delights, your garden can provide a bounty of fresh ingredients.
Basil thrives in the warm summer months, making December a great time to plant this aromatic herb. Whether grown in garden beds or pots, basil adds a burst of flavour to countless dishes and is a must-have for any summer garden. Known for its sweet, fresh taste, basil is a culinary staple, featured prominently in Italian cuisine. Its versatility in the kitchen makes it one of the most rewarding crops to grow.
Sow seeds indoors in early spring or directly outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. To get started, prepare your soil by digging in organic matter like compost or sheep pellets to create a nutrient-rich base. Basil prefers well-drained soil and a sunny position. Regular feeding is key to promoting lush, leafy growth - use a liquid fertiliser or organic feed every few weeks for the best results. Water consistently, but avoid overwatering - basil thrives with deep yet infrequent watering. Harvest leaves regularly and pinch back the tops of the plant to encourage bushy growth and prevent the plant from going to seed.
Basil matures quickly and can be ready to harvest within 40-60 days of planting. Stagger your plantings over the summer to ensure a continuous supply. Genovese basil is a classic choice, but for something different, try Thai basil, Cinnamon basil, or Lemon basil. These varieties offer unique flavour profiles to suit a range of dishes.
Don’t be shy about planting herbs close together - basil makes an excellent companion plant and space filler in the garden. When planted near tomatoes or peppers, basil is believed to enhance their growth while helping deter pests. With the right care, your basil will flourish, providing an endless supply of fresh leaves for everything from pesto to salads, sauces, a nd garnishes.
A caring, helpful, professional life celebrant, with a permanent smile, a listening ear and loads of life experience.
It is your ceremony so let’s design it together and make it memorable.
Available for weddings and funerals.

Once the winter chill has passed and the soil warms, it’s time to plant tomatoes. While Labour Weekend is the traditional planting time, December is also an excellent opportunity to get tomato plants into the ground. The summer warmth will help them thrive and produce an abundant harvest within 60-85 days. Popular varieties like Roma, Beefsteak, and Cherry tomatoes are perfect for salads, sandwiches, or sauces, offering a burst of summer flavour.
Tomatoes are sun-loving plants that require plenty of direct sunlight and regular deep watering to thrive. Try to keep water off the leaves of your tomatoes whenever possible. It’s important to stake or cage the plants early to support their growth and protect the fruit. They should be watered deeply and consistently, with attention to the base of the plant to prevent fungal issues. Regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser every four weeks will encourage strong, healthy plants and a plentiful harvest.
Strawberries
December is a time to reap the rewards of your strawberry plants. These sweet treats are perfect for snacking, desserts, or adding a splash of colour to your festive table. As they begin to ripen, remember that birds are particularly fond of these sweet fruits. Protect your plants by using netting or other barriers, and make sure they receive ample water to ensure a bountiful and juicy harvest. Harvest strawberries when they are fully red and fragrant for the best flavour. To keep plants producing, remove overripe or damaged berries regularly and ensure they’re watered during dry spells. A layer of mulch around the plants helps retain moisture and keeps the fruit clean. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of biting into a fresh, sun-warmed strawberry straight from your garden.

BLACK SHED ARTSPACE
In the heart of Waipu, amidst scenic landscapes and the town’s welcoming charm, Black Shed Artspace has made a grand entrance as the region’s newest creative hub.
This innovative artspace - a shared working environment and gallery - is more than just a building; it’s an inspiring community initiative designed to foster and celebrate the arts in all forms. Set in a beautifully repurposed black shed and sharing the site with Little Red Coffee at 7 Cove Road, Black Shed Artspace brings a fresh presence to Waipu’s creative scene.
Founded with a vision to offer local artists a dedicated place to work, connect, and showcase their works to the community and visitors, Back Shed Artspace currently houses Ceramicist Claire Nicholls, Illustrator Evan Heasman, Painter Laura Currie and Creative Development Professional Sarah Crowe. The layout thoughtfully provides
separate workspaces for the artists alongside a gallery that showcases a rotating selection of works from the onsite artists as well as other amazing Northland artists. These shared spaces foster an environment of collaboration and mutual inspiration, while the gallery invites the community and visitors to experience diverse artistic visions.
Beyond the gallery and workspaces, Black Shed Artspace hosts a dynamic range of creative workshops that promise to enrich Waipu’s arts scene. Claire Nicholls is currently running ceramic workshops for both kids and adults, with a variety of diverse workshops planned for 2025. These sessions cater to all skill levels, from seasoned
creators to absolute beginners. For those who have always wanted to explore their creativity, Black Shed’s workshops provide a welcoming entry point. For more experienced artists, these sessions serve as opportunities to refine existing skills or explore new ones.
Black Shed Artspace’s founders believe art should be accessible to all and are committed to offering programs that appeal to a broad audience. “We want Black Shed to be a place where everyone feels welcome - a place where the creative spirit of Waipu and beyond can flourish,” they shared, expressing their vision for the artspace as both a community touchstone and a beacon of creativity.
In addition to workshops and exhibitions, Black Shed Artspace aims to be a vibrant gathering space. The founders envision artists and visitors mingling over coffee, conversations flowing between gallery exhibitions and hands-on creative sessions, inviting both locals and tourists to be part of Waipu’s growing art scene.
With its doors now open, Black Shed Artspace is on a mission to make art an accessible, integral part of life in Waipu. In thi s creative refuge, Waipu’s artists have found a home, and the whole community stands to benefit. www.instagram.com/BlackShed_Artspace Facebook: Black Shed Art Space

EMPOWERING LOCAL YOUTH
Rodney Youth Project, recently launched by the Rodney Local Board, is an initiative designed to provide young people with more opportunities for growth, connection, and personal development outside of traditional school settings and organised sports.
Poised to make a lasting impact on the community by empowering young people across the region, Rodney Youth Project was launched in response to local voices calling for greater youth engagement. Rodney’s vast and varied geography often means youth miss out on essential opportunities for growth, skill-building, and social connection. This initiative seeks to create new pathways to strengthen the ecosystem of support for youth, ensuring that every corner of the Rodney region has access to valuable programs and events.
The project’s approach to supporting local teens is both innovative and inclusive. By
partnering with local providers, Rodney Youth Project is able to fund and offer existing programs at no cost to participants, removing financial barriers that might otherwise limit involvement and encouraging teens to try something new. Programs already underway include rangatahi kickboxing sessions at Connect Striking in Snells Beach, while new offerings like Teen Art Therapy in Wellsford and a youth kickboxing class at the Wellsford Community Centre have been funded following youth input.
Integrating the voices of the young people this initiative serves is a key focus and regularly facilitated through online surveys
and community engagement. Initial feedback has prompted the board to establish the Rodney Youth Space at Shoesmith Hall in Warkworth - offering a welcoming and safe drop-in environment each Friday afternoon. The project’s coordinators, James Nicholls and Priscilla McClintock Ngawaka, facilitate free activities and a chance for teens t o socialise.
Looking ahead, Rodney Youth Project’s vision is to create a robust platform for youth and program providers across the region. By connecting existing services with new initiatives, the project envisions an environment where providers can work

together to address the needs of local youth more effectively, with Rodney Youth Project taking an active role in facilitating this collaboration. The platform will be supported by newsletters, networking events and training opportunities, along with a plan for an annual Rodney Youth Festival.
Community-wide celebrations of this sort are already on the calendar, starting with a pre-Christmas mini Youth Market scheduled for Friday 13 December at Shoesmith Hall. Young entrepreneurs are encouraged to book a stall and sell their wares, whether that be handmade creations or second-hand goods. The festival will also feature an exhibition space for aspiring young artists and live entertainment, including DJs and mural a rt demonstrations.
Rodney Youth Project is more than a series of programs - it’s a commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where rangatahi can thrive. Engaged youth are healthier, happier and more connected, and when young people learn the value of community involvement, the entire region reaps the rewards.
We check back in with the Orton/Bagnall family as they dream of white sand beaches, crystal clear warm water, abundant marine life and bonfires on coconut palm-laden islands on the next leg of their adventure.
Log 2 - Tony, Bea, Sami and Brooke
After fixing up our new second-hand catamaran our first destination would be as far away from these romantic dreams as we could possibly imagine. Brackish water, built up suburban areas, and not a coconut palm tree to be seen, well that's what we th ought anyway!
The hurricane season was upon us and, for safety and insurance reasons, we needed to move our floating home above Cape Hatteras on the East Coast of the USA to avoid tropical storms. Very similar to how vessels cruising the South Pacific choose New Zealand for a destination for the summer months to dodge tropical storms and hurricanes in the Pacific.
The area we decided to cruise and use as a safe haven for 4 months was Chesapeake Bay. This is a massive waterway on the East Coast of the USA with a shoreline of over 1,000 nautical miles that weaves in and out of anchorages, rivers and creeks, making it a great place to duck for cover in nasty weather conditions - and the largest estuary in the USA.
The first mission was just to get to the Chesapeake, which required an 800 nautical mile offshore passage - 4 nights and 5 days at sea - with a tropical storm brewing a few days behind us. Once we entered the Bay, bereft of anything from our initial dreams, it was up to us to make our own adventure a nd fun.
We learnt how to catch and cook the famed blue crab, the kids mastered how to catch the tasty striped bass, and we spent most of our time finding remote creeks. We enjoyed watching bald eagles, osprey and giant herons hunt for fish while taking in the tranquil peacefulness of calm anchorages.
We sailed our vessel all the way to Washington DC for a real life history lesson and found a remote sandbank where we searched for 8-22 million-year-old fossilised shark teeth. It seemed like every town had a museum in this history-rich area and before we knew it our time had come to an end.
Now we will safely head to the Bahamas for our next adventure. Our lesson from this journey so far is to enjoy and make the most of where you end up or stand, search and look beyond the rough surface as paradise is really what you make of life.

: A Journey for Senses and Soul
READY, SET, DRIFT
Sliding into existence this spring in Wellsford is Kraken Drift Karts, a new venture run by a local family on their spare paddock.
The family has crafted an outdoor track spanning more than 450-metres, artfully designed to get the best out of these go-karts. An outdoor, off-road adventure providing a very different experience from the typical indoor, concrete tracks that most go-kart venues offer.
The idea took shape when the family were pondering what to do with their ‘spare’ paddock. Aaron, the youngest son and now CEO, and Donna, the eldest daughter, jokingly pitched the idea of laser tag, thinking there was no way Dad, Roy, would ever agree - much less Mum, Anna. To their surprise, Dad countered with another idea: go-karts. After a mix of out-of-control daydreaming and serious contemplation and discussions, they took a family vote and agreed to go for it.
Over winter and the start of spring, they put together a business plan, acquired a go-kart, and began building the track, spending hours perfecting its formation. Their plan is to keep evolving the track to offer fresh, varied experiences in the future.
At first, the family wasn’t sure how much interest there would be from the local community. But when a post on the Mangawhai community Facebook group received 400 reactions in a single day, they realised they’d likely underestimated the demand. Dozens of local community members have expressed their excitement for the venture, saying that the area has been missing an attraction like this. The family is thrilled to offer something fun and outdoorsy for people of all ages - if you can get them off the karts first, that is.
Kraken Drift Karts can currently run up to five karts at a time and are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 6pm, and by appointment on weekdays. They’re open rain or shine, ready for either a slippery, wet adventure or a fun, dusty ride!

A property should move you, stop you in your tracks and speak to you. An irresistible chemistry. Barbara and Duncan searched high and low for such a property that did just that and when they found it, they knew that it deserved the ultimate compliment. They met with Berkley trained architect Michael McKay. He climbed inside their minds and brought the dream, the vision to the forefront. They engaged him immediately. “He got it, they got it” The brief that McKay cleverly uncovered was the McAulay’s longing for sense of space and absolute privacy, yet the desire for a home and garden where people come together, to connect, share memorable times in an intimate social space of beauty both inside and out.
The home’s interior is the ultimate compliment to its nourishing green surrounds. Edgy design and quality unite with zones for every mood. The bright breezy master opens to afternoon sunshine, the outdoor bath ready for cheeky sundowners under the big starlit sky. rwbreambay.co.nz/WPU30429
