MAKE THE BIG CALL: SELL WITH CONFIDENCE IN 2024

Selling your property is a big call, and Bayleys is poised to give you the best chance of success. In response to the current market, our recent auction successes, and the latest digital marketing trends, we have crafted a truly unique campaign for owners in Mahurangi, Mangawhai and surrounding regions.

The Big Call 2024 auction campaign is your opportunity to showcase your property like never before, maximising its exposure and potential.

Why list now?

This focused campaign offers limited availability, ensuring dedicated attention to your listing. Take advantage of a shortage of competing properties for sale and the peak Spring market when buyer interest is at its highest. Benefit from our innovative, digitalcentric marketing approach, including tailored video content for every property

The Big Call advantage:

Our campaign features three powerful components to showcase your property. We’ll distribute a premium brochure to 20,000 potential buyers, create dynamic video ads for Facebook and Instagram using AI-driven targeting, and place A1 posters in key Auckland CBD locations. This comprehensive approach maximises your property’s visibility to a wide audience of potential buyers across multiple channels.

Why auction?

Auctions create a competitive process where buyers compete against each other, not you. Potential purchasers come prepared, having completed their due diligence and ready to buy. In most instances, this leads to an unconditional sale on the day or provides an unconditional purchaser for swift post-auction negotiations. The auction process motivates buyers to act, increasing your chances of a favourable and timely outcome.

If you are thinking of selling, this is the tool to maximise exposure, reach, and buyer interest for your property.

The Big Call campaign closes for participation on 4th October 2024. While October may seem far away, it’s important to get in touch now to ensure ample time for preparing your property. Contact any member of the Bayleys Mahurangi or Mangawhai sales team to secure your spot and make the most of the preparation period. LAUNCHING IN WARKWORTH

Learn more about Rocket Lab’s operations, its pioneering role in the small launch industry, and the exciting developments at their new Warkworth facility from Rocket Lab spokesperson Murielle Baker.

Tell us about Rocket Lab and what the company does.

Rocket Lab is a publicly-traded space company that builds, operates, and launches rockets and satellites for its glo bal customers.

Our first rocket, Electron, is an undisputed leader in the small launch industry, having launched 50 times to deploy 190 satellites to space; assisting with weather monitoring, Earth-imaging, science experiments, supporting national security, and more.

Electron is the world’s first orbital rocket built from carbon fibre that flies with the world’s first 3D-printed rocket engine.

Electron launches from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand, the world’s first private orbital launch site. As a result, New Zealand is now one of the busiest launching states globally, with only the United States, China and Russia launching more rockets annually - a phenomenal achievement for a nation that gained orbital launch capability just over six years ago.

We’re also currently deep in the development of a much larger new rocket called Neutron, a reusable, 43 metre tall carbon composite rocket capable of lifting up to 13,000kg to orbit. Neutron will be a game changer for the launch industry, supporting satellite customers who want to deploy their entire constellation of satellites at once, completing cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station, and conducting interplanetary missions to explore planets such as Mars a nd Venus.

MATAKANA

Beyond rockets, two-thirds of Rocket Lab’s revenue as a business comes from space systems; satellites, the components they’re made of, and everything that ensures a satellite’s mission success. In the coming months, we are scheduled for two of our satellites to be launched to Mars on a scientific mission for NASA to study the planet’s outer atmosphere, which is an example of the satellites that form a backlog of 40 plus satellites currently in production by Rocket Lab.

Why did Rocket Lab choose Warkworth for their new facility?

Rocket Lab’s new Warkworth facility is the site that was formerly operated by SailGP Technologies before the company relocated its operations to the United Kingdom. SailGP Technologies had been a close partner and supplier to Rocket Lab, providing selected advanced composite materials and

components for our Electron rocket. When SailGP made the decision to relocate, Rocket Lab stepped in to lease the 70,000 sq/ft facility and retained more than 90% of the SailGP Technologies staff with more than 50 SailGP staff joining the Rocket Lab team.

What kind of operations will the Warkworth facility focus on?

The site will continue to produce carbon composite structures for both our Electron and Neutron rockets as we ramp up the production of both launch vehicles. When Rocket Lab acquired the Warkworth site we took over the facilities’ advanced manufacturing equipment, including an autoclave, ovens, composite material cutting plotters, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) metal machining equipment, and largescale CNC composite machining equipment, to support accelerated research and development, and production.

What opportunities will the Warkworth branch create for locals?

We are always hiring at Rocket Lab as we grow with new missions for our spacecraft and new launch contracts for our launch business. We currently have four open roles in our Warkworth facility, from composite CNC programmer and operator, composite technicians through to senior IT sup port specialist.

Often the perception is that you need to be a rocket scientist to work at Rocket Lab, but for a lot of roles that’s not necessarily true. We take on a lot of tradies who have transferable skills from their experience in boat building or a related trade. We try to hire locally as much as we can, so if there are any tradies or technicians in Warkworth who might like to get into a career at a rocket factory, we’d love to hear fr om them!

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

RUNNER, CLIMBER, ADVENTURER - JOHN GLUCKMAN

At 73 years old, retired dairy farmer John Gluckman, has led a life filled with extraordinary adventures and remarkable achievements, running marathons on all seven continents and climbing the Seven Summits.

John first discovered his love for tramping in 1968 after completing a 23 day Outward Bound course. As a member of his University tramping club he then dove into a two-week mountaineering course at Mount Cook in 1972. Taking a brief hiatus it was ten years before John completed a solo ascent of Orizaba, Mexico’s highest peak, before he settled in Matakana and truly embraced his passion for climbing.

Joining an Australian expedition to climb a minor Himalayan peak near Mount Everest is what set the stage for more ambitious climbs. In 1990, after reading an article about a commercial expedition to Vinson Massif, Antarctica’s highest peak, John accepted the challenge and surprised himself by reaching the summit. This achievement, which he initially thought would be his last major climb, caught the attention of renowned climbers Rob Hall and Gary Ball. They invited him to join their 1993 commercial expedition to Mount Everest, where John once again triumphed, reaching the summit much to his surprise and delight.

It was then, inspired by these successes, that John set his sights on climbing the highest points on all seven continents; a goal he completed in 2000 with the ascent of Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest mountain. His climbs included Denali (Mt. McKinley) in North America in 1996, Aconcagua in

South America in 1997, Kilimanjaro in Africa in 1999, and Kosciuszko in Australia also in 1999. Additionally, in 1998, he summited Gunnbjorns Fjeld, the highest peak in both Greenland and the Arctic.

John's climbing career faced a significant challenge in 2003 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the prostate gland, and fortunately, the cancer had not spread. Remarkably, just three months after surgery, John joined a ski expedition to the highest point on the Penny Ice Cap in Baffin Island, Canada. He puts his successful recovery and achievement down

to his unwavering determination, maintained fitness levels, and the early detection and treatment of his cancer.

Throughout his climbing career, John has never sought accolades or medals, though he has been invited to share his experiences in numerous public talks. While he says, "all my climbs are memorable in different ways”, he notes Vinson Massif, his first major climb, Mount Everest, and Mount Elbrus, as some of the standouts. Among the most challenging, Denali due to the need to carry all of his own equipment, and build protective snow walls around tents for protection from high winds.

Credit: Dawn McKenzie

“On Everest I needed to be fit but not physically strong. On Denali I had to be both strong and fit,” comments John. His love for fitness and outdoor adventure extends beyond climbing, having run marathons on every continent and participated in four World Masters Games as a middledistance track runner and four World Winter Masters Games as a cross-country skier. In 2015, John won a bronze medal in the 4 x 5,000-meter relay at the World Winter Masters Games. His adventurous spirit also led him to ski across Greenland from west to east in 2018 and ski the last degree of latitude from 89 degrees south to the South Pole in 2019.

John Gluckman's experiences are a testament to the power of perseverance, fitness, and a relentless pursuit of adventure. Though not always recognised with formal accolades, his achievements speak volumes about his dedication and passion for exploring the world’s most challe nging terrains. www.JohnGluckman.com

LANDSCAPES AND LENSES

Husband and wife duo, Todd, with his steadfast dedication to landscaping, and Kate, with her heartfelt approach to photography, exemplify how passion and partnership can flourish together.

The driving force behind Rochford Landscapes, Todd, has spent over 20 years cultivating his expertise in the landscaping industry. What began as a modest two-man operation 10 years ago, has grown into a thriving business with over 12 employees across teams based in Matakana and Mangawhai. Differing from conventional contracting, Todd’s team are often undertaking projects that transform outdoor spaces into creative and artistic expressions for their clients.

On the other hand, Kate has created a name for herself in the photography industry over the past two decades. Her portfolio spans from capturing the intimate moments of weddings, to family and newborn shoots, and compelling editorial and commercial photographs. Kate’s wedding photography business, while based in Matakana, has seen her journey to picturesque locations like Byron Bay and Hawaii. Her style and approach captures life’s milestones with warmth and gentle care.

Kate and Todd celebrated their personal journey together at the end of 2023 when they got married at Songbird Retreat, a wedding venue that holds special significance. The retreat, a labour of love for Rochford Landscapes over the prior five years, is also one of Kate's favourite wedding venues to shoot at, symbolising the perfect confluence of their professional and per sonal lives.

The couple first intertwined their professional

ventures when Kate began photographing Todd's landscaping work. This collaboration not only elevated the marketing of Rochford Landscapes, showcasing Todd’s landscaping projects in their best light, but also offered Todd a new perspective on his craft, instilling a sense of pride in the creative aspects of his work.

As Kate's business flourished, the need for a dedicated studio space arose. Todd was able to facilitate this in the Matakana yard of Rochford Landscapes, transforming a sea container into a studio space, complemented by Todd's landscaping work, that beautifully merges their individual ventures and integrates Kate's artistic domain with his.

Now residing in a charming tiny home in Mangawhai with their little fox terrier, Rocco, Kate and Todd embark on their next chapter. This fusion of businesses has allowed them to support and enhance each other’s creative pursuits, a testament to their personal commitment to one another and the harmonious blending of their profe ssional lives.

GARDEN WASTE TO REWILDING GOLD

The brainchild of Tim Stewart and Louise McRae, Birds Bags is transforming garden waste into a powerful rewilding tool.

Their journey began when the couple bought a few acres of land in Pakiri, primarily composed of exposed clay, devoid of trees and overrun with kikuyu grass. Wanting to develop the block with a small budget, they sought a solution to support the small reforesting native trees they were planting while managing the aggressive kikuyu.

Garden waste was the perfect answer. By mulching around the trees, the waste not only helped the plants retain moisture during dry spells but also improved the challenging soil conditions. Initially, they took green waste from a friend's mowing business, which the land swallowed up hungrily. The transformation was swift and rewarding; the plants started to thrive, and birds soon followed. “It was heartening to witness the beginning of rewilding,” says Louise.

This success inspired the creation of Birds Bags. Tim, a motorbike engineer, and Louise, an artist, saw an opportunity to extend this service to busy households, making it easier for others to keep their sections tidy. “It feels like a humble yet genuine way to make a difference to an unwell ecosystem,” comments Tim.

Birds Bags operates a simple and flexible service: they deliver repurposed wool sacks for garden waste collection and charge $45 per bag or $75 for two bags collected together on a casual basis. With no contracts this approach allows customers to pay only when their bags are full and need to be collected, accommodating the natural growth cycles of their gardens.

Aiming to make a genuine impact, Tim and Louise repurpose the garden waste to support young trees, continuing the rewilding process. They purchase plants from Reforest Native Plants in Omaha, where Rhonda, a skilled horticulturist with the ‘magic touch’, sources seeds locally ensuring her p lants thrive.

Birds Bags has received significant support from Rochford Landscapes who have integrated Birds Bags into their services, helping their clients maintain the beautiful gardens they’ve created for them.

With aspirations to grow Birds Bags, Tim and Louise intend to continue rewilding and hope to create job opportunities for the local community. Through their innovative approach, Birds Bags is not only providing a practical garden waste solution but also contributing to the restoration of the lo cal ecosystem.

MY PATCH

Taking the guesswork out of growing cut flowers at home.

Watching flower lovers enjoy picking flowers at her Point Wells Farm as part of her Summer pick-your-own events, Lisa Bindon started thinking a grow-your-own experience would be just as enjoyable.

She discovered most pickers didn’t grow their own flowers, thinking the process from seed to vase would be too daunting. It was also a challenge for them to find cut flower seedlings at garden centres which mainly sell short bedding plants. So, after some discussions with her entrepreneurial son Alex, the two teamed up to create My Patch, aiming to make it simple for people to grow cut flowers at home.

Working with her son has been a fun process, says Lisa. Although born and bred in Matakana, Alex now lives in Christchurch, so they make their long-distance business partnership work with Zoom calls and Trello boards. Alex handles branding and the website, while Lisa manages the hands-on growing side of the business.

The secret to growing successful cut flowers is planting the right seedlings at the right time of year for the climate. This is exactly how My Patch makes it easy – there is no guesswork. With six years of experience seasonal flower growing at her Flora Flower Farm, Lisa uses her knowledge to expertly time seedlings to be ready to plant at the right time for the mild North Auckland climate.

My Patch releases seedlings in batches to purchase on their website with sign up available for email notifications of release dates. This means customers are often planting seedlings at the same time as Lisa is on her flower farm. My Patch not only grows highquality seedlings but also provides ongoing specialised growing and harvesting advice through their Instagram page.

Always a strong supporter of her local community, Lisa is collaborating with Harbour Hospice, growing plants to donate to the plant sale at their Point Wells Homes & Gardens Tour on Sunday 10 November. She is planning community potting days in September to get the plants underway.

Point Wells couple Mike and Debbie Jones are among those who’ve generously opened their home, with Mike saying, “As we’ve grown older we’ve become so much more aware of the important role hospice has in the community. Most of us know somebody who has been cared for by hospice. This is a great cause to support.”

The couple’s home is a new build, which they completed and moved into about a year ago. Some would describe it as a Cape Cod style home but Debbie, who has worked in real estate for 30 years, says they see it more as an easy-living, modern home with great flow.

High ceilings and well-proportioned rooms give the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home a comfortable, spacious feel, while the walls display a wonderful collection of art. Designed by architect, Adrian Robinson, the build was project-managed by Mike, who has worked on countless construction sites over the years as a plumber, while their garden was designed by landscape designer Kir sten Sach.

GARDENING & FLORAL CALENDAR

Spring is a crucial season for garden maintenance as it sets the foundation for a thriving garden throughout the warmer months. Not only does it improve the aesthetics of your garden but it also provides numerous practical benefits. Stihl Shop Warkworth shares their expert advice to help prepare your garden for summer.

Words Stihl Shop Warkworth | www.StihlShopWarkworth.co.nz

GARDEN PREPARATION

Start by removing any pesky weeds as they compete with your plants for nutrients and water. Aerate and enrich your soil with compost to improve its structure and fertility so it’s ready for planting your spring flowers, vegetables or shrubs. Apply a layer of mulch around plants to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature.

LAWN CARE

Using a rake, clear your lawn of any debris such as leaves or dead grass to allow new growth to emerge. Aerate the soil to improve your lawn's ability to absorb water and nutrients and apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Lastly, overseed your existing lawn, focusing on bare or thin patches to ensure your lawn is even and lush. Remember to check the blades on your lawnmower or ride-on are sharp and in good condition.

HEDGE TRIMMING

Typically it’s best to trim hedges in late Winter to early Spring, just before the new growth season begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches and shape edges to encourage growth. Petrol or battery powered hedge trimmers can be used to prune, trim, shape and maintain hedges, trees, plants and shrubs and offer a convenient alternative to manual shears, making garden maintenance a breeze.

TOP TIPS

• Sharpen and clean your tools prior to using.

• Remove dirt and debris using a stiff brush (old toothbrushes or paint brushes are handy for this).

• Disinfect tools, then rinse with water and dry them thoroughly before storing to prevent the spread of diseases between plants.

• To prevent rust apply a light coat of oil to any metal parts.

• House Washing • Gutter Cleaning

• Deck Cleaning • Roof Treatments

• Driveway Cleaning and much more!

Words Anna Dobson www.WhereRosemaryGrows.co.nz

SOW

Spring is the ideal time to start sowing your summer tender annuals. In our warm climate, you can get a jumpstart on growing a variety of vibrant summer flowers. While it’s tempting to start early, it’s often best to wait until mid-September to sow seeds for flowers like zinnias and cosmos, blooms that thrive with a bit of patience and warmth. If your area is prone to late frosts, delay planting until you’re certain the frost risk has passed, giving your tender plants the best chance to flourish.

FERTILISE

them at bay while your plants continue to grow. Consider using straw or bark as mulch options. Both work exceptionally well in maintaining soil health and appearance, giving your garden a neat and polished look.

BLOOMING

Spring is a crucial time for feeding your garden to ensure it blooms beautifully throughout the season. Roses, in particular, benefit greatly from fertilisation as they begin to set new spring growth. Opt for a high-quality organic rose fertiliser or homemade compost to nourish your plants. To keep your roses thriving, continue to fertilise after each flush of blooms. This consistent feeding will support healthy growth and ensure a stunning display of flowers all season long.

PREP

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE SPRING OUTDOOR TIDY UP

Healthy soil is the cornerstone of a thriving garden. Now is the time to prepare your garden beds for the planting of tender annuals. Start by adding a fresh layer of compost to enrich the soil. Then, use a broadfork to loosen and aerate the soil, which helps improve its structure and drainage. This preparation ensures that your plants will have a nutrient-rich environment to grow and prosper. It’s an investment in the success of your garden throughout the season.

MATAKANA MEADOWS

Born from a vision to connect with and support the local community by striving to produce fresh, chemical-free, nutrient-dense food in Matakana’s backyard.

Matakana Meadows was established with the vision of bridging the gap between consumers and producers, allowing people to see where their food comes from and how it’s grown. Family is at the heart of the farm, with customers considered an integral part of the extended family.

Jake and Emma, the farm’s ecosystem managers, moved from Otago to Matakana in June 2022 with their first child on the way and a shared enthusiasm and drive to make this vision a reality. Emma, who grew up on a sheep and beef farm in North Taranaki, brought her expertise and passion from a decade-long career dairy farming in the South Island. Jake, with a background in sheep and beef farming, found a renewed passion for agriculture through entering the world of Regenerative Agriculture and biological soil health.

Their combined experiences and dedication to farming aligned with nature, have been crucial in shaping Matakana Meadows. The farm focuses on building healthy soils, improving water quality, promoting biodiversity, and ensuring animal welfare. Driving their farming practices is this philosophy - “Happy healthy soils equals happy healthy animals equals happy he althy people.”

The use of homeopathy for animal health and diversification into selling raw milk are examples of Matakana Meadow’s innovative and nature-aligned approaches. While their journey into selling raw milk at the farm gate showcases their dedication to providing high-quality, fresh products directly to t he community.

As a new member of the local community, Matakana Meadows has big ideas in the pipeline for further diversification, all with the intention to enrich the local community. Raw milk is just the beginning! Extending beyond food production Jake and Emma actively engage with locals and share their knowledge, building relationships and a sense of trust and support while reinforcing the farm’s position within the community.

Through their dedication to sustainable farming and community engagement, Matakana Meadows is on its way to becoming a pillar of hope and innovation in the agricultural landscape, setting a high standard for others to follow.

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM

Corner Paddock, nestled at the intersection of Mangawhai, Waiteitei, and Silverhill Roads, is home to a carefully nurtured grass-fed herd producing premium buffalo milk products.

Founded by Damian Stephen and Sue Dassler, Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock began with a dream to live off the land and produce their own food. Damian’s background in the food industry and Sue’s expertise as a landscape gardener reflect their love for quality and nature. After purchasing a herd of River Rhine Italian Buffalo, Damian and Sue established the farm, adopting a slower-paced lifestyle n ear Mangawhai.

“The Buffalo are very friendly and sociable animals. They need plenty of attention,” says Damian. The buffalo herd, lovingly cared for, produces A2/A2 milk, known for its easy digestibility and rich nutrient profile. This milk contains only the A2 type of beta-casein protein, which can be gentler on the stomach for those who experience discomfort with regular cow’s milk.

Located on the farm, mere footsteps from the paddocks, the cheese factory is meticulously maintained by Damian, where every product is handcrafted with care. "Learning how to make the cheese has involved a lot of trial and error. Everything I know is self-taught," Damian says. This delicate process follows a series of thoughtful steps, producing everything from buffalo halloumi and feta to creamy buffalo yoghurt.

Sue’s bountiful garden adds another layer of charm to the farm, frequented by locals to purchase freshly harvested vegetables and herbs. “We don’t use any sprays. Instead, we rely on natural and organic products to manage pests and employ other natural remedies,” says Sue. This farm-totable approach fosters a strong sense of community by showing people where their food comes from.

They are excited to announce their recent launch into Mangawhai New World, making their buffalo products available to the wider public. Their products can also be found at various local stockists in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Wakapara, and Albany. As buffalo milk farming is relatively new in New Zealand, with only a few suppliers nationwide, Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock is proud to be part of this unique and growing industry.

The rolling hills of Mangawhai are a special place where the buffalo roam freely. Whether adding smooth buffalo feta to cheeseboards, enjoying buffalo milk in coffee or smoothies, or frying halloumi for a delicious breakfast, their products provide a delightful and healthy addition to an everyday diet.

SUSTAINABLE ARTISTRY AND AWARD-WINNING DESIGN

As architect, owner, project manager and craftsperson, Felicity Brenchley was involved in every step of this project, affording her the opportunity to take a slower approach and invest her time to achieve a higher quality outcome.

Driven by the desire to build for longevity and create a well-crafted home that resists future alteration, Felicity focussed on fulfilling the needs of her growing family without excess. The scale of spaces was inspired by the family's previous mid-century home with the interior accommodating furniture collected over the past 20 years. This philosophy resonated throughout the build, using non-toxic, local, durable materials and employing waste minimisation strategies du ring construction.

Set on a steeply sloping rural site in Pohuehue and surrounded by regenerated native bush, the home intentionally connects its occupants to the landscape while maintaining a strong sense of enclosure and protection from the elements. An outdoor room carved out of the compact rectangular floor plan creates an outdoor living space that remains visually connected. A timber ceiling slopes from a social to intimate scale along the spinal corridor, with utilitarian

spaces to the south and living to the north where its apex frames the angular kitchen complemented by a curved island bench.

Composed of simple geometries and finely detailed junctions between materials, rectilinear, angled, and curved forms intersect with precision. The play of light and shadow is emphasised through skylights, deeply recessed glazing and brick screens protecting from the harsh western sun while allowing in filtered light. Rooms are humanscaled and proportioned to suit their preloved furnishings as well as custom built cabinetry and window seats.

Robust brick and timber detailing extend from the exterior to the interior, combining with handmade basins, tiles and brass handles, plus handblown glass pendant lights by Monmouth Glass in the kitchen and dining areas, as an ode to craftsmanship. The refined material palette references midcentury design using sustainable Abodo

Vulcan timber and locally made brick. Bathrooms combine a polished concrete floor with lighter micro-cement plastered walls and marble mosaic tiles on curving shower walls.

A series of conceptual artworks were created during the design stage considering form, proportion and the effect of shadows and screening. These exploratory studies informed the detailing of the interior and are now hung on walls throughout the house.

Significant cost savings were achieved by self assembling and installing all cabinetry, tiles and bricks, allowing higher quality finishes and fittings by reducing labour costs. Cutshop provided custom CNC cabinet panels to Felicity’s design which were installed incrementally over several months. Folded brass cabinet handles were designed as a reflection of the curves and angles of the house, and handmade in collaboration with Felicity’s mother Nicola Roake, a Silversmith.

MONMOUTH GLASS STUDIO

Monmouth Glass Studio believes in quality hand-made items that are well designed, well made, that will stand the test of time.

A strong focus on creating decorative yet functional pieces crafted using traditional glass blowing techniques. The Studio splits its time between its core offering of handblown glass lighting and vessels for the home, as well as frequent collaborations with architects, designers, and other craftspeople who share their love of making.

“The process of designing and building my own house has helped to refocus my practice on what I enjoy most, which is creating with my hands. I am now intentionally weaving my art practice into my architectural projects. This allows me to explore more freely and conceptually at the start of a project and gives me a good excuse to switch off from my laptop and work with my hands more often,” reflects Felicity.

It also deepened Felicity's love for the earth, providing a deeper understanding of ways in which building practices need to change in order to minimise environmental impacts. “My aim is for projects to have a net positive impact on their environment,” she says. Felicity will continue these efforts, implementing a planting plan created in consultation with Cielo Landscape Architects and Russet Gardens to regenerate native bush and create a food forest to boost biodiversity and soil health on her own piece o f whenua.

Achieving finalist status in the 2024 Interior Awards residential house category and winning the 2024 Trends International Design Awards New Zealand Architect Kitchen of the Year, plus featuring in the latest season of Grand Designs New Zealand, the home Felicity has created is a true reflection of her passion for design and architectural expertise.

35 YEARS OF GROWTH AND INNOVATIONMATAKANA BOTANICALS

Beloved local brand, Matakana Botanicals, is celebrating a remarkable 35-year journey that has seen the company grow from humble beginnings to an internationally recognised name.

Founded in 1988 by Colyn Devereux, the company was originally known as Les Floralies and offered unique wood shaving potpourris made under Colyn’s house in an old bathtub, which takes pride of place at Matakana Botanicals today.

Not long after, Colyn pioneered the room fragrance market, introducing fragrant candles and expanding into body care products. It was during this period she purchased a small bach at Leigh, which quickly became a creative hub for her family.

Working with the company from Australia since the age of 22, her son Danvers found

himself drawn back to the region, and in 2000, purchased the business from his mother. By 2014 the business was rebranded to Matakana Botanicals and had relocated to the stunning site it now occupies.

“Our early days were like an exciting adventure, pioneering a new industry for New Zealand,” reflects Danvers. “Colyn’s outlook was ‘act local, go global,’ and before long, we were attending trade shows abroad and knocking on department store doors, eventually supplying Harrods, Macy’s, Nordstrom, David Jones, and Lane Crawford. We then began supplying Air New Zealand in First and Business Class, even creating a special amenity kit for the Queen when she flew with them! We were then approached by Emirates, marking the beginning of a wonderful 15-year relationship – quite the achievement for a small Kiwi company, rubbing shoulders with Bulgari on a major international airline!”

Grateful for and proud of the special relationships they’ve developed with local retailers, some of which have lasted over

20 years, Danvers also cherishes the connections he has made with local growers and beekeepers who now supply the business and have always inspired him.

One of the company’s biggest challenges –and ultimately, highlights – was purchasing their property in Matakana. Initially an

TRANSFORMING YOUR VISION

After visiting the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist, it's probably time for new glasses. However, the process of trying on multiple pairs can be overwhelming, often leading to leaving empty-handed or settling for something less than satisfactory. It’s a familiar scenario, but help is at hand!

The good news? A spectacle prescription belongs to the patient, allowing them the freedom to purchase glasses from any source. It’s a big decision and often requires advice, so where should you start?

Unlike optical shop assistants, a Registered Dispensing Optician has extensive training not only to interpret prescriptions accurately but also to help individuals feel confident and comfortable with their eyewear choices. The title ‘Dispensing Optician’ is protected, and only registered practitioners can use it; they must also stay updated with advancements in lens technology and design.

Pene Fox of Bespectacled in Ti Point is a Registered Dispensing Optician who is highly qualified, with decades of experience and a deep understanding of lenses and frames. Her passion is to make choosing eyewear an empowering experience by taking the time to understand the client's style, needs, and preferences, and support them throughout the process.

Pene’s clients love her remarkable knack

for finding frames that accentuate their best facial features and fit perfectly; the constant compliments from friends and family are nice too! For Pene it’s about restoring a sense of identity and ensuring her clients feel seen and valued. It helps that Bespectacled stocks a fabulous range of the latest frames sourced both locally and from around the globe.

“Getting new glasses should be exciting!” Pene says. “It can’t be rushed and you need to feel you’ve explored all the options; and when we find the right pair, it can be truly transformational.” Clients have told her they felt like they were becoming invisible as they aged, but with their new glasses, they feel they’ve regained their personality – and even a renewed zest for life.

Choosing new glasses is an important, longterm investment in both vision and personal style. As a Dispensing Optician, Pene provides the very best advice, transforming not only how clients see the world but also how they see themselves.

CAB NEEDS YOU!

For decades, the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has been a trusted source of free, confidential advice and support for New Zealanders. This vital service is powered by dedicated and trained volunteers, and now more than ever they need your help.

From providing support for challenging relationship issues such as separation, financial disputes, and custody battles, to assisting with filling out forms or communicating with government departments, the CAB offers confidential, empathetic support by providing free ad vice and referrals.

Skilled volunteers help community members understand their options, empowering them to take action and ensuring they leave better equipped to resolve their issues. Working for positive social change within the community, CAB helped with over 500,000 enquiries last year alone. Extensive training is provided to volunteers and availability is only required for a few hours one day a week.

“As volunteers we are not expected to ‘know everything’ and we have a super database to call on and a wide community network of specialists to refer our clients to if needed. I’m learning something every shift and it feels great when a client pops in or phones to share their success with you,” notes longtime volunteer, Adrian Tracz.

With a database of verified information about every type of government and public service available, volunteers are able to help people understand their rights and connect them with the resources they need for their particular situation. In such a challenging economic climate and with the digital divide hugely risking access-for-all, there’s never been a more integral time to provide support

and encouragement, helping community members through the challenges they a re facing.

“I have certainly found that there is a real need for the CAB service. People find themselves faced with all sorts of tricky challenges in life, leaving them unsure of their options or what to do. They are very relieved to have a person with free time to listen, understand, and see what can be done to sort it out,” says volunteer, Mike Austin.

Opened in 1986 the Wellsford office recently expanded to include satellite centres in Warkworth and Mangawhai, providing support to the local community

by ensuring public services are accessible to all. CAB is available by phone, in person and online, with more than 2,400 trained volunteers across the country helping New Zealanders understand their rights and obligations.

GOOD DOGS

Experts at making sure prospective dog owners get the dog they need rather than the dog they think they want; Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary owners, stars of The Dog House NZ and winners of the 2023 Junction Awards, Gavin and Helen Cook, have released their first book.

Tell us about your new book, Good Dogs. This book is a light-hearted insight about owning a dog and giving them their best life. It includes tips and advice on the joys of dog ownership, and features some of our rescue stories and the families who have adopted from us.

What

inspired

you to write Good Dogs?

We were approached by publishing company Allen & Unwin to write a book about our experiences rescuing dogs. The book developed from there giving us the opportunity to share advice on what sort of dog is right for you, bringing your dog home, sleep and feeding, plus how to keep your dog happy and healthy, interspersed with real case studies.

Can you share your key advice for being a responsible and happy dog owner?

A key piece of advice that we tell everyone who adopts from us is ‘rules and boundaries from day one’. When a pup or dog knows what they are allowed and not allowed to do they feel more comfortable and relaxed as they know what is expected from them. Also remember everyone has an off day!

What is one of your favourite or most memorable rescue stories to date?

One unforgettable rescue involved a call about a dog in poor condition, living in the bush, likely with pups. We met the concerned caller and discovered a chewed-through rope tied to a tree, indicating the dog had been abandoned.

Situated on a tranquil vista. Using the latest and healthiest colour technology from O&M. Free from PPDs synthetic perfume, sulphates, parabens and MIT. Consultations, coffee and conversation.

By appointment with Mel

021 641 683

We had stopped on our way to pick up sausage rolls hoping to entice the dog, and it worked. The thin, scared dog slowly approached us and we managed to slip a lead on her. Exhausted, and in terrible condition it was hard to tell if she was pregnant or had pups. After searching for over 2 hours on a steep hillside covered in thick bush, Gavin miraculously found six pups in a hollowed-out tree. With lots of TLC, all survived and they all found amazing, loving homes. One of the pups appeared on the cover of Junction's July 2023 issue.

Good Dogs is available now from bookstores nationwide with all profits made from sales going back to the sanctuary to help with their ongoing rescues.
