TURNING THE TIDEYOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS
Local marine advocates and educators, Steve and Riley Hathaway of Young Ocean Explorers, recently teamed up with Paul Nicklen, co-founder of SeaLegacy, a global movement to save the ocean. Starring in an episode of ‘A Sea of Hope’ they highlight the natural beauty and current risks to New Zealand’s oceans. We caught up with Steve to learn more.
Tell us about your involvement in SeaLegacy's, A Sea of Hope: The Beauty and The Barrens.
Paul’s a bit of a hero of mine, and a good friend. He reached out about the project and invited me to join the SeaLegacy vessel, both as a local guide and underwater cameraman. We spent six weeks travelling around a lot of my favourite Northland diving spots; among them Little Barrier Island, Great Barrier Island, and Goat Island.
The series, A Sea of Hope, showcases inspiring underwater stories around the world, highlighting the efforts to save our oceans. We captured stunning locations with excellent marine life, while also documenting places that have been devastated by kina barrens.
You get quite emotional in the episode. What do you want New Zealanders to understand
we’re particularly passionate about our native species like the kea, kiwi, and kauri tree, but we’ve seriously undersold New Zealand’s story. 93% of New Zealand is ocean, with up to 80% of our native species living there; it's time we make the underwater story of New Zealand a key part of the K iwi story.
Most people are surprised to learn that while 30% of New Zealand’s land is protected as national parks, only 0.38% of New Zealand's oceans are protected. We have a reputation of eco-tourism and environmental protection on land, but in the ocean we’re failing.
In the episode, Paul mentions the need for New Zealand to increase their percentage of marine protected areas to 30% by 2030. Can you tell us about this and how it can be achieved?
New Zealand, along with 190 other

serious degradation of our ocean and is willing to act. In my short lifetime I've witnessed scallops, pipis and cockles disappearing, crayfish becoming functionally extinct in the Gulf, a huge increase in kina barrens, and invasive species like Caulerpa and Mediterranean fanworm taking over areas. We have a growing population and we must stop thinking that things will improve if we keep doing the same thing.
While marine reserves, or ‘wet libraries’, alone aren't the solution, they are a crucial place where life can flourish. I believe every child in Aotearoa, no matter where they live, should have access to a place that offers a glimpse of what our untouched oceans were like. The ocean is resilient, if left alone it will recover, but we must prioritise the needs of future generations over our needs and w ants now.
What can we do, and what are
protecting it, we need to educate ourselves, snorkel in both protected and non-protected areas to see the difference firsthand, speak to our local MPs, and support campaigns led by groups that are making a difference.
Young Ocean Explorers plan to present a campaign to the Prime Minister next year, amplifying the voices of children in New Zealand who want a better future for the ocean. Our mission is to ensure that future generations truly value the ocean, making a difference through generational change.
Young Ocean Explorers is a charitable trust that was formed to connect the next generation of kids with the ocean. To support their mission and to watch A Sea of Hope: The Beauty and The Barrens visit t heir website.

A RUGBY JOURNEYMARK BENNETT
Arriving in New Zealand last November, Head of Athletic Performance at Blues Rugby, Mark Bennett has made Puhoi his home. Together with his wife Helen, they are enjoying the village life after years of adventure following Mark’s career.
Mark Bennett’s life has been defined by his passion for rugby. It all began when he was just seven years old, playing the sport at his primary school in the UK where his teacher, Mr. Phillips, a Royal Air Force veteran, passed on his deep enthusiasm for the game. From those early days Mark’s talent on the field was evident.
He went on to play professional rugby in the UK, representing both Cardiff and Bristol. Mark’s dedication and skill eventually led him to the international stage, where he proudly wore the Welsh jersey. His first cap for Wales came during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa, where he faced the formidable New Zealand team. His career continued to flourish until 1999 when a playing injury forced him into an early retirement while at Bristol. Yet, rugby wasn’t done with Mark.
With a Master’s degree in sport science, Mark transitioned into a coaching role, becoming a strength and conditioning coach at Bristol. This opportunity allowed him to stay connected to the game he loved, but in a new capacity. His expertise in sports science and conditioning made him a sought-after figure in rugby circles. Over the years, he took on various roles, including heading up the Strength and Conditioning departments for the Welsh National team, where he played a part in two Grand Slam
victories. He also contributed to the success of Ospreys Rugby, helping the team secure two league titles before taking on the role of Head of Sports Science and Medicine for the English Rugby Football Union (RFU).
In 2021, Mark’s career took an unexpected turn when he accepted a role in the backroom staff of Alexander Zverev, a rising star in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) circuit. This new venture into the world of tennis was both challenging and rewarding. Mark found the experience enjoyable, though it was vastly different from the world of rugby. Under his guidance for two years, Zverev’s performance soared, and he climbed from seventh to second in the ATP world rankings. Zverev also won a singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and claimed victory at the ATP Finals, the tennis equivalent of the world championships.
Despite the thrill of working in tennis and travelling to exotic locations like Mexico, California, Miami, and Doha, the demanding lifestyle took its toll. The constant travel, living out of a suitcase, and being away from his wife, Helen, made Mark realise that a change was needed. The desire for a more stable and balanced life with family led him to step away from tennis.
Mark’s path eventually led him to New Zealand, thanks in part to his connections
with Andrew Hore, CEO of the Blues, having worked together at the Welsh and Ospreys teams, and Vern Cotter, the Blues’ head coach, who consulted for World Rugby in 2023 with him. When the opportunity arose to interview for the role of Head of Athletic Performance at the Blues, Mark seized it.
In his current role, Mark is responsible for ensuring that the players are fit to perform at their best, playing the game of rugby the coaches aspire to, while also keeping them healthy throughout the season. He feels fortunate to have inherited a department with an exceptional staff, including physiotherapists, a doctor, strength and conditioning coaches, a nutritionist, and a sports scientist. Mark notes that many would be surprised by the immense time and effort required in the off-season to prepare players, as well as the daily work necessary to maintain their health and fitness throughout the season.
Mark is committed to building on the team’s success and generating a development pathway to educate up-and-coming coaches in the Auckland region. As Mark looks forward to the future with the Blues, he’s equally excited about the life he and Helen are building in their new home.

A HOLE-IN-ONE EXPERIENCE
The Bunker is Mangawhai’s newest destination, blending live sports, great food, and state-of-the-art golf simulators for a one-of-a-kind experience.
Words Olivia Freestone
Dreamed up by lifelong buddies Dave Bell, Lyndon Johnson, and Ellen Johnson, The Bunker began as a casual idea. As local tradies with already established businesses, they were eager to tackle a new and exciting project. Passionate golfers and sports enthusiasts, the trio initially considered creating a driving range. But the idea of using golf simulators meant they could bring the excitement of the course into the relaxed environment of a sports bar. Dave refers to it as ‘the kiwi dream’ - a vision that came to life when they secured a lease in Mangawhai Central last June.
Already a popular destination known for its stunning golf courses, The Bunker is wellpositioned to become a favourite hang out among locals and visitors alike. “We are filling a gap in the market for a venue that offers live sports as the primary focus,” s ays Dave.
Introducing a fresh concept to Mangawhai, The Bunker features golf simulators from Premium Golf Simulators New Zealand, the exclusive distributor of Foresight Sports launch monitors and software in New Zealand. These simulators offer a high definition experience, allowing users to play courses from all around the world, including a virtual round at Tara Iti before heading out to the real deal. With advanced data on clubhead speed, ball speed, launch angle, and more, players at all levels can refine their skills. The simulator experience is fully customisable, catering to both beginners learning the game and seasoned golfers honing their technique.
The interior of The Bunker combines a stylish sports bar with four state of the art golf simulators and multiple TVs for watching live sports. Blending modern design elements with the cosy, classic feel of a whiskey bar,
the space features green walls and gold accents that evoke a day on the green. The tasteful décor, with its pops of colour, creates a sophisticated yet timeless look, capturing a modern old-school charm.
On the menu, discover a selection of crowd pleasers - think gourmet hot dogs, juicy burgers, salmon pastrami, and platters that are perfect for sharing. Combining sport, community, and top notch hospitality, The Bunker brings a fresh and exciting vibe to Mangawhai just in time for summer.
Whether visitors are perfecting their swing, catching the big game, or enjoying a meal with friends, The Bunker is set to be the go-to spot this season.

THE CULINARY JOURNEY OF GIORGIO
From Italy to Brazil to Matakana Village Farmers’ Market; meet the man behind the Italian pasta creating a stir at the Village Farmers’ Market.
Born in Rome, Italy, into a family deeply rooted in the art of fine dining, Georgio Ridolfi was immersed in the rich culinary heritage of his homeland from a young age, quickly developing a passion for Italian cuisine, with a particular focus on perfecting pasta and Mediterranean seafood dishes.
His love for food and cooking led him to open two high-end restaurants in Fiumicino, a coastal town near Rome. These establishments quickly became favourites among the elite clientele of the capital, offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation that set them apart in the competitive dining scene.
In 2004, Giorgio’s culinary journey took an exciting turn when he married Renate and moved to her hometown, Curitiba, Brazil. With determination and a deep love for Italian cuisine, Giorgio opened a bistro in Curitiba, where he introduced the local community to authentic Italian flavours, skilfully fused with Brazilian influences. His bistro quickly gained popularity, becoming a must-visit spot for those seeking an extraordinary dining experience.
The year 2020 marked another significant chapter in Giorgio’s life when he and his family moved to New Zealand, driven by the desire to provide a better future for their children, Giorgia, 16, and Andreas, 18. Whangārei was chosen for its peaceful environment and because Renate had secured a position at a renowned dental clinic there. For Giorgio, however, the move brought new challenges, including the task of learning English in a new country.
Recognising that opening a restaurant might not be feasible while still mastering the language,
Giorgio decided to share his culinary expertise with the local community in a different way. He began producing and selling Italian pasta and other traditional products, bringing authentic Italian cuisine to a region with little connection to this rich culinary tradition. His products quickly gained recognition for their exceptional quality, earning him a coveted spot at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. There the main attraction is Giorgio's legendary cheese wheel, where he crafts his signature Pasta Alla Ruotaa gooey, cheesy masterpiece.
Saturdays have since become the happiest day of the week for Giorgio. It’s the day he meets his friends, fellow stallholders, and regular customers at the market. His children, Giorgia and Andreas, both play an active role in the family business, helping with sales at the market. Andreas also adds a personal touch to their presence by regularly performing with his band, Blind Eyes, making the market not just a place of work, but a vibrant community hub for the family.
Giorgio's satisfaction comes from more than just business success; it’s the joy of bringing a piece of his heritage and professional expertise to New Zealand. Whether through his handcrafted pasta or the vibrant market atmosphere, Giorgio continues to connect with the local community, making Saturdays not just a day of work, but a celebration of culture, family, and friendship. rg.romano2004@gmail.com www.instagram.com/Chef_Italiano_

WILDLY GROWS BEYOND THE LOCAL MARKET
Renowned local business Wildly, previously Wild Delicious Matakana, has been making great strides.
The past two years has seen Kaz Staples and her team navigating post-COVID challenges and restructuring the business to not just survive but thrive. “We’re proud to be a local brand,” she says, noting the importance of maintaining a local identity, supporting and employing locally whenever possible. “We have an incredible team who are all from the surrounding area,” says Kaz.
Wildly’s roots date back to its original founder, Amber Rose, selling ferments at
the Matakana Farmers’ Market, and Kaz is determined to keep that local spirit alive. Their mission? “To bring wild fermentation to the mainstream,” Kaz shares, “while staying true to the artisan methods that make our products unique and maintaining small-batch brewing quality.”
Today, Wildly’s products can be found in supermarkets across New Zealand, as well as in high-end independent grocers and other artisan stores throughout Aotearoa. But the
biggest leap has been in their online sales. “After coming from building a brand without even a website back in the early 2000s, it’s like I’ve found God!” Kaz laughs. “It’s such a different approach compared to my previous business Pure Delish, and it’s exciting to see this channel grow so rapidly.”
Wildly’s online sales have skyrocketed from a few orders a day to nearly 1,000 orders each month this year. A phenomenal growth impacted by Kaz’s son Elliott, who works

VILLAGE PICNIC TO YOU
Since its launch in October 2019, Village Picnic has been supporting local artisans with its picnic gift hampers. Now, founder Philippa Potaka is expanding, taking her venture on the road with Village Picnic to You.
Over the past four years Village Picnic has adapted to challenges, shifting its direction to offer unique experiences like scavenger hunt Mystery Picnics, further showcasing the Matakana region and its producers. Now Philippa has introduced a fresh concept with Village Picnic to You, a mobile charcuterie and cheese cart available for event hire.
Inspired by the ‘Build Your Own Cheese Box’ concept pioneered by London sisters Catherine and Toria Smith, Philippa wanted to bring a similar idea to New Zealand. However, opening a brick-and-mortar shop was not feasible, so instead she envisioned a mobile version. Village Picnic to You combines Philippa’s love of entertaining and serving great food with a fun, interactive and memorable foodie experience that is sure to impress.
A first for the region and one of only a few nationwide, the cart enables guests to create their own mini picnic platters from a selection of local premium cheeses, cured meats, and accompaniments, presented in a visually unique way. Perfect for any occasion, from weddings to corporate gatherings, the elegantly designed cart can be branded accordingly, adding a unique, Instagramworthy flair to any event.
Since its conception, Philippa has chosen to engage local talent to bring her vision to life. From illustration design by ex-Mahurangi College art teacher James Nicholls to the cart’s design and construction by Simon from Hawken Builders, solid in structure but also collapsible for easy transportation. Every aspect of Village Picnic to You reflects Philippa’s dedication to local collaboration.
The cart features carefully curated and locally sourced products from Matakana Smokehouse, Puhoi Cheese, Rootstock Larder, Salty River Farm, and Daily Organics, among others. Beyond food, Philippa collaborates with local artisans to create unique experiences, such as Paint n Picnic with Creative Moments and Pot tery n Picnic with Clay Friends, showcasing her commitment to supporting and celebrating the region’s vibrant cr eative scene.
With Village Picnic to You, Philippa continues to innovate, offering a gourmet experience that brings together local flavours, community spirit, and unfo rgettable moments.

DOUBLE GOLD FOR LOCAL GIN
Small-batch gin, Matakana Gin, crafted using only the finest local ingredients, has recently been honoured with a Double Gold award at the 2024 New Zealand Spirits Awards.
Founded with the goal of creating a gin that captures the unique essence of the stunning Matakana and Omaha coastlines, Matakana Gin has always stayed true to its roots. A careful selection of citrus, botanicals, and pure water, all sourced locally from Matakana, combined with a dedication to traditional
awards. Competing in the largest category, Contemporary/Navy Strength, with 87 entries, they stood out among some of the best gins from across New Zealand. This award reflects the brand's commitment to creating a gin that captures the heart of Matakana, resonating with both gin lovers and experts alike.
Matakana Gin was born out of a desire to create something truly unique - a spirit that reflects the beauty and character of its surroundings. Earning Double Gold is not just a testament to the hard work of the team but also a powerful reminder of why they embarked on this journey: to share a taste of Matakana with the world.
As they celebrate this remarkable milestone,
it’s poignant to remember that it was only two years ago that Matakana Gin launched into the market with its first batch of just 24 bottles. “We want to thank everyone who has supported us, from our loyal customers to the local community. Your belief in us has been crucial,” says founder and owner, Justin. Looking ahead, the journey continues with exploring new flavours and crafting unique gin experiences that tell the story of Matakana with every bottle created. Matakana Gin’s Double Gold accolade marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, filled with more adventures and, naturally, more gin.

stories and flavours of Northland,” Lesley says. “We want to bring the community together, involving both locals and visitors in a fun and exciting way.”
A local highlight in Mangawhai will be Brooke Lane Vineyard, which is hosting several events, including their 80s BBQ Bonanza on Saturday 12 October. This event promises 80s-themed fun with a tasty BBQ feast from The Barbeque Hut, live music, and a chance to win prizes for best dressed and best dancer. Nicky from Brooke Lane Vineyard notes, “It’s great to see all the foodie places
around here getting involved.” She adds, “It’s been a really tough year for everyone, so this event will be a fantastic way to bring people to the area and lift local spirits.”
Origin Northland, a boutique grocery in Waipu, will be hosting ‘A Taste of Cool Kai’ on the first weekend of the celebrations. They have invited their suppliers to this market-style event, where many vendors will participate in the ‘Savour North Challenge.’ The competition challenges local eateries to create unique dishes using Northland’s exceptional produce.
Little ‘Lato have done it again, taking out the Supreme Champion award at the NZ Ice Cream Awards and receiving a whopping total of 5 trophies!
Crafters of top-notch gelato, sorbet and vegan gelato, every small batch of Little ‘Lato is churned to velvety perfection, just like Founder Hannah learnt in Italy. These awards come at perfect timing, just as Little ‘Lato Waipu reopens this October, ready for a great summer ahead.

Jennifer from Origin Northland shares that they will have three Savour Challenge dishes available for tasting and voting. “Our entry, the ‘Hula Hoof,’ is a toasted sandwich with goat's cheese and pineapple-habanero jam, with optional rocket and prosciutto. This combines Northland-based products, including Belle Chevre Creamery cheese, Northland-grown pineapples, habanero chillies and bread from Pine Nut Bakery,” she says. WINE, ART, AND RELAXATION RETURNS
Omaha Bay Vineyard, known for its exquisite wines and warm hospitality, reopened its doors in August following its annual winter break.
Located on the stunning Tāwharanui Peninsula, Omaha Bay Vineyard (OBV) was established in 2002 by Bev and Hegman Foster. This remarkable property, with its spectacular views out to Little Barrier Island, quickly became their labour of love. For the first 18 months, they dedicated themselves to preparing the land for a vineyard, which now boasts an unusually wide variety of grape vines, including Pinot Gris, Flora, Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Syrah, and Petit Verdot.
The first vintage was harvested in 2006, the winery was built in 2007, and Omaha Bay Vineyard opened to the public in May 2008, with this year marking their 19th vintage. OBV is a must-visit destination, where visitors can
take in the magical view over Omaha, out to Little Barrier Island, and beyond, while enjoying superb hand-crafted wines. The tasting room, a wine cave, evokes the charm of old Europe, but the view from the cellar door is quintessentially Kiwi.
The Cellar Door menu offers a delightful selection of appetisers designed to complement the excellent range of wines. From their celebrated antipasto platters to the indulgence of locally crafted chocolates paired with OBV wines, there's something on the menu to tantalise every palate. Encouraging visitors to sit back, relax, and savour the friendly ambience and spectacular views.
Guests are also invited to browse the OBV Art Gallery at their leisure. Strategic lighting
unites the timeless elegance of the wine cave with the energy and creativity of some of New Zealand’s most talented artists. All pieces are available for purchase.
OBV now offers accommodation, providing guests with the opportunity to indulge in the ultimate luxury vineyard getaway in their fully self-contained apartment. A private garden area, offering stunning views from OBV's hilltop location, provides the perfect setting for a BBQ or a relaxing evening by the firepit.
Open Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, Omaha Bay Vineyard elegantly combines wine, art and relaxation.

A FRESH TAKE ON AN ANCIENT TRADITION
A new venture is making waves on the Matakana Coast with its unique blend of tradition and innovation. Solana Rituals, founded by local duo Mai Barton and Rachel O'Malley, brings a modern twist to a centuriesold practice with their Vitality Fire Tonic.
Mai and Rachel, who have called the Matakana Coast home for six and 15 years respectively, are well-versed in the world of wellness. With backgrounds in business, well-being, food, branding, and interiors, their combined experience has shaped the foundation of Solana Rituals. The idea emerged from their shared passion for maintaining good health amidst busy lives, inspired by casual conversations during early beach swims and ritual saunas. Their goal was to create a product that was both effective and easy to incorporate into d aily life.
Fire tonics have been used for thousands of years, with many people taking apple cider vinegar daily for its numerous health benefits. Solana Rituals’ Vitality Fire Tonic offers a
fresh take on this traditional remedy, brewed with 16 fresh, active ingredients in organic apple cider vinegar for over two months. This careful process extracts the best from each ingredient, resulting in a vibrant tonic designed to kick-start your day.
The Vitality Fire Tonic offers a range of benefits when taken daily. It can boost immunity, support digestion and gut health, balance blood sugar, improve circulation, kickstart metabolism, aid in weight loss, detoxify, and reduce inflammation. Versatile and easy to use, the tonic can be enjoyed in several ways including as a daily shot, or incorporated into salad dressings, cooking sauces and hot or cold drinks. Each shot is packed with beneficial bacteria, local Manuka honey, and a medley of fresh
ingredients, offering a seamless way to enhance daily routines with a little boost. But Solana Rituals is about more than just the product; it’s about building community. Every Monday at 8:30am, Mai and Rachel host a Vitality Fire Tonic shot and ocean dip at Omaha Beach, rain or shine. A simple yet powerful way to start the week with a boost of health and connection with others.
Quickly becoming a local favourite, find Solana Rituals every Saturday morning at the Matakana Farmers’ Market and try their Vitality Fire Tonic. Stay tuned for updates and new offerings from this exciting new venture as Solana Rituals continue to develop products to support wellness. www.instagram.com/SolanaRituals
GARDENING CALENDAR
Get ready to dig into the joys of summer gardening! It's the perfect time to plant vibrant vegetables such as tomatoes, capsicums, and beans, and fill your garden with colour and flavour. Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting, the soil is calling. Keep those weeds in check and nurture your garden for a bountiful summer harvest.
Tomatoes, Chillies, Eggplants, and Capsicums
These warm-season crops thrive in the heat and are sensitive to frost, making October, November and even as late as December the ideal time for planting. All four vegetables require similar growing conditions and care, making them great companions in the garden. The key to growing these vegetables successfully is to ensure they are planted in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight.
To get started, purchase healthy seedlings or grow your own from seed. Sow seeds indoors for 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good quality seed-raising mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place the trays in a warm, sunny spot. Seedlings usually emerge in 7 to 14 days.
Once seedlings have reached a height of 10 to 15cm, they are ready to be transplanted into the garden. Prepare a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Space plants 45 to 60cm apart to ensure sufficient airflow and room for growth. Make sure to bury tomato seedlings deeper than their original pot level, as they can develop roots along their stems, creating a more stable and robust plant. In contrast, chillies, eggplants, and capsicums should be planted at the same depth as they were in their pots. Tomatoes and eggplants need support structures, such as stakes or cages, to keep the fruit off the ground and prevent breakage.
Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to provide the nutrients required for robust growth. Tomatoes, in particular, are heavy feeders and benefit from additional organic matter or a balanced vegetable fertiliser. For eggplants and capsicums, adding a slow-release fertiliser at planting time can help sustain growth throughout the season.
Regular watering is crucial, especially during hot, dry spells. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Using mulch around the base of plants helps retain moisture, keep the soil temperature stable, and suppress weeds.
Tomatoes, chillies, eggplants, and capsicums are ready to harvest when they reach their desired colour and size. Tomatoes can be harvested when fully ripe and red (or yellow, depending on the variety). Chillies can be picked green or left to ripen to red, while eggplants should be harvested when their skins are glossy and smooth. Capsicums can be harvested green or left to ripen to red, orange, or yellow, depending on the variety.

JOURNEY’S REST
Blending the charm of backcountry cabins with modern comforts, this Puhoi home is a celebration of nature, adventure, and the joy of outdoor living.
Images Jessica Chloe Photography & Ben Parry
Nestled at the junction of two legs of the Te Araroa national walking trail, this unique family home draws its inspiration from a love of the outdoors, hiking, and the simplicity of New Zealand’s backcountry timber cabins. The site, perfectly positioned along the renowned route linking the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South, offers some of the country’s most beautiful nature trails right on its doorstep.
At the base of the driveway, a four-post, tinroof shelter stands ready, with just enough room in the bush to pitch a tent next to a classic Kiwi picnic table. It’s a welcoming nod to the family’s passion for the outdoors and the adventures that have shaped their lives; a theme that guided most of the design decisions for their home.
"We wanted to design a home that felt like the backcountry cabins we had seen on our journeys," explains project architect and homeowner Michael Cyra. "The brief was to design a house that landed somewhere between a refuge or shelter in its simplest form and a family residence. Somewhere we could be with all the comforts of a family home but that inspired us to get out and experience the next adventure, whatever that may be."
The house unfolds as a series of distinct pavilions, or cabins, each branching off from a central deck dissected by glass doors to form a functioning hallway. The openplan living, kitchen, and dining areas evoke the communal gathering spaces found at tramping stations, while the master bedroom and children’s rooms are separated by a break in the traditional gable roof form and central location of the deck, creating distinct zones within the home.
True to its inspiration, the home embraces a humble material palette that flows seamlessly from the exterior to the interior. New Zealand grown timbers line both the outside and inside walls, with large sliding doors that retract fully, allowing the decking boards to flow throughout the space. This blurs the lines between inside and outside, between home and shelter, to create a space that feels like one with its natural surroundings.
021 831 021 mark@mclbuild.nz mlcbuild.nz
A reclaimed timber ceiling in the communal areas, crafted from wood salvaged from dilapidated rural farm buildings and old fence posts, brings a sustainable ceiling solution and storied charm with no two boards alike. Contrasting with the light timber ceiling is the addition of concrete flooring and a wood-grained concrete surround on the fireplace, while a large bay window frames the lush green view from the dining room, welcoming colour to the fray.
Dark hues from the interior cladding and warmth from the wood-burning fireplace create a cosy cabin ambience during winter, while large over-wall sliding doors and hard-wearing internal surfaces invite a strong connection to the outdoors during K iwi summers.
After the home’s completion, Michael teamed up with the project's builder Todd Farrow, to create Curated Living; a design and build company offering high-end and unique architectural solutions with the support and confidence of a builder's input and greater cost certainty.
Journey’s Rest became Curated’s first rural concept which has since grown and inspired several different design concepts. “Curated are making it easier and more accessible to get the home of your dreams by breaking down the often-complicated design process into simpler, more transparent steps,” s ays Michael. www.CuratedLiving.co.nz hello@CuratedLiving.co.nz

AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY FROM GLASS TO CLAY
Arriving in New Zealand in the late eighties as a physiotherapist, Matakana artist Liz Sharek found her passion as a maker after participating in night courses at Auckland Studio Potters.
Following her newfound passion Liz attended Unitec, gaining a degree in Craft and Design, opening the door to the world of art for her. “I was very fortunate to be able to explore a massive range of mediums and techniques under the tutelage of leading New Zealand practitioners,” says Liz. A glass casting class taught by Anne Robinson at the end of her first year marked the beginning of Liz’s love of glass; she was totally smitten. Upon completing her studies Liz took a year-long residency in the United Kingdom with renowned glass caster, Co lin Ried.
For the next couple of decades, she continued to cast glass, it was the ‘new black’ in the art world and a very exciting time to be working in glass. Liz exhibited widely both nationally and overseas, with a couple of her pieces even making their way into the Te Papa Tongarewa Collection.
Upon moving to Matakana some 10 years ago, Liz pivoted to clay. Loving the immediacy and expressiveness of hand building with clay she discovered the big textures and glazes that are now her signature. She notes her work “develops through the process itself but handbuilding
inevitably lends itself to an organic and natural vibe.”
Opportunities to exhibit came with the opening of The Vivian, a wonderful, innovative, supportive and vibrant hub for the art scene in Matakana which is now sorely missed. Liz had her first solo show, ‘Wild Things’, here in 2019 under the ownership and curatorial eye of Scott Lawrie. ‘Encrusted’, a solo show at Makers Gallery in Auckland followed in 2022.
Towards the end of last year Liz spent a month at Driving Creek Railway in
Coromandel as part of their residency programme, providing her with a fabulous opportunity to immerse herself in the astonishing world of Barry Brickell, his legacy, wild clay and wood firing.
Liz has had her clay work accepted into a range of national competitions including The Waiheke Small Sculpture Prize which she won in 2016 and received the people's choice award for in 2023. She has also been given several opportunities to put work into the Portage Ceramic Awards, Molly Morpeth Canaday Award, Waiclay Ceramic Awards and UKU Clay HB Awards.
Meeting potters across the country as a tutor of short workshops within the blossoming clay diaspora around New Zealand is something Liz always enjoys. She continues to make work from her studio in Matakana for a number of galleries around the country and is represented locally at Artform Gallery. LizJSharek@gmail.com www.instagram.com/LizSharek
LIFE ON THE HIGH SEAS WITH THE ORTON/BAGNALL FAMILY
After years of adventure working on private sport fishing boats, Tony Orton and Bea Bagnall felt the call of the open sea once more. Trading their busy lives in Mangawhai for life aboard a sailing catamaran, they’ve set out with their two young children to explore remote destinations and live life on their own terms. We check in with the family to hear about their journey so far.
We have always dreamed of living on our own vessel, fishing and exploring remote destinations, and embracing the freedom that comes with it. But for some reason, we were too scared to take the plunge and cut ties with the comfort and security we had worked so hard to build. People often dream and fantasise about things but rarely act on th ose dreams.
We had burned ourselves out, working long hours building our business in Mangawhai and travelling all over the world for work. Tony was diagnosed with a disease that, if not caught early through regular blood tests, would have shortened his life. Then, the death of a family member drove home the message that life can change in a moment, and that material things really don’t matter.
We realised we couldn’t keep living like thiswe needed a change. As we discussed what mattered most to us, our list included family
Log 1 - Tony and Bea
time, travel and exploration, eating well, fishing, time on the ocean as a family, and our kids’ education and what they see in life and the world.
That’s when we made the decision to sell everything we had worked for our whole lives, including the family home, buy a sailing catamaran, and set off to sail around the world. We wanted to fish, explore remote destinations, slow down, and spend undistracted time with our two kids, Sami (10) and Brooke (5).
As luck would have it, we found a secondhand vessel in Florida, USA. It required a lot of hard, gruelling work in the shipyard to get ‘Ikigai’ (a Japanese word translating to ‘a reason to live’) ready for sailing the world's oceans and becoming a full-time liveaboard for a family of four.
So far, we’ve spent six weeks in a Florida
shipyard during hurricane season, taken a trip to the Bahamas where we damaged our keel, outrun a hurricane up the U.S. East Coast, enjoyed remote anchorages to ourselves, collected kai moana from the ocean, and navigated homeschooling.
Time has started to slow down for us; days seem longer, and we are watching our children learn and open their eyes to a new world, which has made this change all worthwhile. How long can we sustain this lifestyle? We’re not really sure. None of us know what’s around the corner - opportunities may arise, and setbacks may happen along the way. But one thing is clear to us: follow your dreams and live your life, your way!
Stay tuned for more updates on the family’s journey in our upcoming issues and follow their channel on YouTube.

Still located on the corner of Whitmore and Takatu Roads, Helena’s home salon has been a trusted spot for Matakana and Omaha residents since she moved to the area in 2018.
The rebrand marks a new chapter for the business, one that Helena hopes will better reflect her vision and services. “The old name was a nod to my Icelandic birthplace and my maiden name, Viggosdottir, but Kiwis found it a little tricky to pronounce and remember,” Helena explains.
“Glow Skin Studio is much more evocative and captures the feeling of joy and vibrancy I hope to achieve with every one of my clients.”
The new name coincides with some innovative changes Helena is making to her business. Embracing digital technology, she offers an easy-to-use online booking and payment system, making it simple for clients to schedule appointments. She's also introducing a new facial subscription service, allowing clients to spread the cost of their treatments over time. Another exciting introduction is the ‘Glow and Go’ self-service LED light treatment, perfect for customers who want a quick pampering session with as little as 30 minutes to spare.
“Many businesses have been moving towards flexibility of the user experience and I wanted to do the same,” Helena says. “I have invested in a new LED light, and on the days I’m not working, it just sits there idle. So, I thought, why not let my loyal customers come in and pamper themselves with a quick cleanse and a relaxing, rejuvenating li ght treatment?”
The ‘Glow and Go’ treatment is designed to be fast, flexible, and cost-effective, while also aligning with Helena’s ethos of being intimately connected to the local area and i ts people.
“Many of my customers have become good friends, and the business has really helped me and my family integrate into the Matakana community,” Helena shares. “My son now goes to Matakana School and I see many of my clients at pick-up and drop-off every day. Instead of just having them round to my house for coffee, why not let them pop in for an LED light treatment instead?” she laughs.
With a fresh name, innovative offerings, and a genuine, ongoing connection to her community, Helena’s Glow Skin Studio is set to continue brightening the skin of Matakana and Omaha locals for many years to come.

NURTURING COMMUNICATION
After relocating to Matakana with her husband and one-year-old daughter in February, Grace Morton has been enjoying the strong sense of community the region offers. Following her passion for helping others and working within the local community, she recently opened her private practice, Nurture Com.
A fully qualified speech and language therapist registered with the New Zealand Speech and Language Therapy Association (NZSTA), Grace holds a Master's in Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Auckland, as well as an honours degree in Performance Voice and an undergraduate degree in Music and Psychology.
Nurture Com provides speech and language therapy services to people of all ages, both in person and online. As a member of the Mahurangi Health Collective, Grace also maintains a clinic space in Warkworth, offering convenient access for local clients. Passionate about nurturing communication Grace is dedicated to helping her clients develop their abilities and find their voice. “I love working with individuals and their families to support communication, empathy and understanding,” she says.
While Grace specialises in voice disorders, hearing loss, and general communication needs, her services include support for voice, hearing, speech, language, stuttering, communication strategies (including the use of New Zealand Sign Language), post-stroke support, and communication assistance for neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. She also focuses on social skills and confidence building, ensuring her clients feel empowered in all aspects of their communication.
Valuing her work with clients spanning all ages Grace expresses how privileged she feels to be a part of each client’s health journey. “Every person I work with has a unique set of strengths and skills that we can build on to improve communication and quality of life. I love working with older people, especially when we can get to know each other and I can hear their story.
Through this relationship building, I am able to support them in individual ways that will benefit them the most.”
Grace also enjoys working with children and young people. “It is always special to connect with a child and the sessions are high energy, which is fun!” she shares. “My favourite aspect of working with children is to build relationships with the child’s caregivers and family. I learn so much from every family I work with.”
With warmth, enthusiasm, and a commitment to helping others, Grace is making a positive impact on the community. Look out for her 'Sing and Sign’ classes for parents and babies aged 0 to 2 years, designed to support communication between parents and their children through the use of New Zealand Sign Language, nursery rhymes and songs.

SUPPORTING MANGAWHAI
Mangawhai has long been known as a quiet place to retire or holiday at the family bach, but a boom in young families moving to the area and a growing permanent population is changing the face of this once sleepy beach town.
Mangawhai is now one of the fastest growing towns, in the fastest growing region in N ew Zealan d. In the past ten years, the local primary school enrolment at Mangawhai Beach School has skyrocketed from 250 to nearly 700 students, with more than 100 students requiring additional support due to disabilities or medical conditions.
Back in 2015, at the cusp of all of this development, a group of dedicated community members gathered around a kitchen table to address the increasing need

for food assistance and support for older people in the area. Their response was the creation of Te Whai Community Trust.
Nine years on, Te Whai Community Trust is now the sole provider of comprehensive social services based in Mangawhai. The recent demographic shift has introduced a wide range of social needs, including increased demand for occupational therapy for children, counselling services, and support for rising issues like family harm and suicidal ideation.
The expanding family demographic brings new challenges for older people, youth, and individuals with disabilities, putting a spotlight on the rapidly increasing need for wide-reaching community support.
Kiri Eriwata, general manager at Te Whai , explains the range of services the Trust currently provides to those living in Mangawhai: “Along with our much-needed food baskets, we support older people to tackle isolation and loneliness, provide counselling and well-being coaching,

social work, occupational therapy for children, youth work, parenting support, playgroups, driver training and Te Reo classes. Te Whai also acts as a hub for government services including WINZ and IRD clinics.
“In the 12 months from June 2023 to June this year, we carried out 3,262 episodes of service - that includes everything from visiting a lonely older person, providing driving lessons and well-being programmes, to clinical appointments for social services.
“We are so grateful for the generous support we currently receive from the local community, but the continued challenge we have is generating sustainable funding that will enable us to provide ongoing social services, at a time when demand is at an alltime high.”
To help build a thriving, healthy Mangawhai community, Te Whai has launched a selection of support packages for those who wish to contribute donations to the Trust. Ranging in price from $55 to $1,500, donations will help Te Whai continue to provide valuable services in Mangawhai.

Acclaimed nine-piece band Imperfect Offering is coming to Warkworth to perform A Leonard Cohen Experience. Having toured New Zealand to critical acclaim and standing ovations from 2016 to 2022, the band, which includes four vocalists, returns to the stage in 2024 for this one-off concert.
Brenda Rawlings, a Warkworth resident for 35 years, made an exceptional contribution to the community by supporting many Mahurangi initiatives, including the Women’s Resource Centre, Family/Whanau Support Services, Stopping Violence Services, and Homebuilders. She was a much-loved and highly respected relationship therapist and trainer in the field of Imago Relationship Therapy, making a significant impact in relationship counselling both locally and internationally. Along with her husband, Peter McMillan, she founded the Imago Institute for Relationships in 1999, presenting workshops for couples and training for counsellors and psychologists in New Zealand and Australia for over 25 years. From 2011 to 2016, Brenda also served as Co-Dean of the Imago International Training Institute, based in the USA, where she led a team of 30 Imago Relationship Therapy trainers from around the world.
A Memorial Fund, administered by the Imago Aotearoa Charitable Trust, has been established in Brenda’s name with a twofold purpose: to provide financial support for under-resourced couples to attend the ‘Getting The Love You Want’ Couples Workshop, and to fund training for tangata whenua in Imago Relationship Therapy. All proceeds from the concert will go towards the Memorial Fund.
The concert will feature many of Leonard Cohen’s most loved songs, including ‘Suzanne,’ ‘First We Take Manhattan,’ ‘Bird on the Wire,’ ‘Chelsea Hotel,’ ‘Dance Me to the End of Love,’ ‘Hallelujah,’ ‘If It Be Your Will,’ ‘You Want It Darker,’ and ‘Anthem.’ Brenda and Peter’s son, singer-songwriter Michael Llewellyn, will also perform a
