PUHOI & MAHURANGI WEST Puhoi is brimming with Bohemian history and culture. Dotted around a river, Puhoi means ‘slow water’, a name suited to its relaxed pace of life. Landing at the mouth of the Puhoi River in 1863, the first European settlers were disappointed by the wild, bushclad land that greeted them. Local iwi became an important support system, teaching the settlers how to fish, snare birds and eat from the bush. With little access to the outside world, a pub was soon established. This vibrant watering hole continues to be a popular meeting place for all walks of life. Puhoi is one of just two ethnic historical villages in New Zealand. Popping up more recently is a renowned artisan cheese factory, along with cafes and a monthly farmers’ market. The village is also a gateway to much of the 900-hectare Mahurangi Regional Park Estate, from Wenderholm to Mahurangi West. A D AY O U T I N M A H U R A N G I W E S T ©©Waiwera is a sleepy seaside resort delighting visitors with its aquatic park, natural hot springs and day spa. ©©Visit Wenderholm, a picturesque Regional Park including a sandy beach, coastal forest and farmland. Enjoy a leisurely walk followed by a picnic and swim at this incredible destination. ©©Grab a beer at the iconic Puhoi Pub, one of the last historical pubs left in the Southern hemisphere and filled with colourful stories from the past. ©©Sullivan’s Bay is a treasured picnic, camping and swimming spot, and the views are stunning along the ridgeline before dropping into the bay. WARKWORTH Warkworth is found at the head of the Mahurangi River. The river is a prominent feature, running through the township and reflecting a wonderful history. During the 1800s, the river was a busy trading pathway for sailboats and passenger steamers, with flat-bottomed scows delivering lime and cement for the construction of downtown Auckland. Docked at the town basin is New Zealand’s oldest, restored scow, The Jane Gifford. This beautiful vessel is available for sailing charters or special occasions. Resting along the riverbank is a popular playground, community park and walkway. Warkworth has a bustling, friendly vibe, with many eateries and shops to explore. Since 1970, it has played host to a large community event, The Kowhai Festival, held every spring. The town also acts as a gateway to the stunning Matakana Coast, where a collection of beaches and wine country awaits. Photos: Top and Bottom Left by Kevin Riley of CineStuff. KAWAU ISLAND Kawau Island is one of the larger islands in the Hauraki Gulf and it is full of fascinating 19th century stories. Your pathway to the island is a short boat ride from Sandspit Wharf, over crystal clear waters. Sir George Grey, the third Governor of New Zealand bought the island in 1862, and much of it remains privately owned, making it a quiet haven with no roads - just a chorus of birdsong for company. A striking feature on the island is Grey’s former residence, Mansion House. Once the old Copper Mine Manager’s house, Grey established a ‘Garden of Eden’ and turned the home into an imposing mansion. This beautifully restored building offers a wonderful insight into colonial New Zealand, with many treasures from Grey’s travels. Proudly strutting the grounds are peacock, and wallaby bounce around too. In the early morning, you’ll hear kookaburra laughing – all an introduction from Grey, offering a unique experience. A DAY O U T O N K AWA U ©©Drop anchor in Mansion House Bay and stay overnight. From here you can take your pick from the many picnic spots and walking tracks available. Favourites include the trek to Ladies Bay, follow the Redwood Track, or take the miners’ trail via Dispute Cove to the old copper mine. Founded in 1844 this is believed to be New Zealand’s first underground mining operation, and the chimney still stands. ©©Tuis can be seen and heard around the bays, particularly stunning Vivian Bay with its enormous native trees and pristine water for swimming. ©©Kawau Boating Club has awesome clubhouse facilities. Enjoy a couple of beers and a meal overlooking the Bon Accord Harbour, the seafood chowder is to die for. Petrol, diesel and ice is available as well as a flat white. KAWAU ISLAND 21
MATAKANA Soaked in beautiful vineyards, pristine beaches, lush countryside and a thriving village, Matakana is paradise found. The area is an indulgent setting for wine and food lovers and is firmly on the map as one of the most desirable places to visit just outside of Auckland. The historic village is the heartbeat of the area, from which a bustling Farmers’ Market unfolds each Saturday. Live music and a riverside location create a fantastic atmosphere, just make sure you bring cash, the ATM queue can be frustrating. Matakana settled in the 1840s. Back then, timber and clay kept the town busy, with a sawmill and brickwork factory soon established. Fruit also became an important industry, swapped out for farming in the 1900s, and in the 70s much of the land converted to boutique vineyards. Alive and well in Matakana is a strong sense of community and an entrepreneurial spirit. Fine dining, casual eateries, boutique shops, warm hospitality and mouth-watering vino are all hallmarks of this incredible destination. FOSSICK & FIND “Interesting Things Hard to Find Elsewhere” Fossick & Find offers a very eclectic mix of desirable items ranging from rare maritime memorabilia, antiques, antique weapons, maps, ethnic collectables and works of art to selected modern and vintage home décor, soft furnishings, women’s clothing and accessories, together with modestly priced gifts and coastal themed nick-nacks. Last year, owners Chris Devereaux and Barbara Harris bought a property situated in “uptown Matakana Village” (the Northern end) right next to the Community Hall that had been re-zoned for retail services. They then set about completely restoring the family home built in the early 60’s, altering the internal layout to provide five gallery spaces with décor and lighting to suit, but retaining the retro architectural features. Their vision was to create a very different, exciting and intriguing shopping experience that kept unfolding with wonderful surprises. Fossick & Find has become a destination of choice, with many local and holiday home owners bringing visitors to it as a place of interest in the village. It seems that they usually fossick long enough to find a treasure they can’t live without. 41 Matakana Valley Rd, Matakana Village (ample parking on site with mobility access) Ph: 09 423 0125 | 021 764 183 | www.fossickandfind.co.nz MATAKANA 29

WELLSFORD TE HANA & KAIWAKA
WELLSFORD, TE HANA & KAIWAKA Wellsford has a fascinating backstory. Many of the early immigrants to this area were ‘nonconformist’, and formed the last organised British settlement of New Zealand in the 1860s. Settlement took place at Albertland - now Port Albert, on the Kaipara Harbour. Isolation made it difficult to earn a living, so in search of more fertile land, the group moved inland and established Wellsford. Local tradition tells us that Wellsford is an acronym of these pioneering families - Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble. Wellsford is almost exactly halfway between Auckland and the northern city of Whangarei. This makes it an ideal refreshment stop when travelling between the two points. The district is spoilt for choice when it comes to coastal offerings – the rugged, yet stunning Kaipara Harbour on the west, and pretty Te Arai and Pakiri beaches to the east. This busy rural town caters for many farmers in the area, and its convenient location is also making it a popular choice for young families seeking a relaxed, affordable lifestyle away from Auckland.

MANGAWHAI Affectionately dubbed ‘Magical Mangawhai’ this seaside locality is made up of Mangawhai Village on the south west of the harbour, and Mangawhai Heads on the north east, both areas are linked by a causeway. In the early to mid 19th century, Mangawhai Harbour was one of the main access points for the Kaipara. Ngati Whatua used to drag waka all the way from Kaiwaka to Mangawhai. Mangawhai means ‘stream of the stingray’ and this theme has remained popular in local art and architecture. From the deep-water estuary, dramatic sand dunes, popular surf beach and ‘crocodile rocks’ framing the harbour and ocean, to the incredible cliff top walk, Mangawhai is a diverse natural playground. Fast becoming a must-visit destination, Mangawhai boasts a couple of world-class golf courses, boutique vineyards, a famous French chocolate factory, Farmers’ Markets, art trails and annual festivals. This once backwater surfie town is now firmly on the map as a desirable place to live, with visitor numbers swelling tenfold over the summer months. A weekend visit is never long enough.

WAIPU & LANGS BEACH Waipu is a small town big on its Scottish heritage. Forced to leave Scotland in 1817 a large group of people went in search of a better future, arriving at Waipu in the mid 1800s with a goal of building a strong ‘kinship based’ community and this is strongly felt today. Best known for its vibrant annual festivals, The Highland Games and Tartan Week is an eclectic, exciting showcase of a community painting the town tartan. Waipu Township’s closest neighbours are Waipu Cove and Langs Beach, both renowned east coast hotspots for surfing, fishing, swimming and relaxing.
