JUNCTION AWARDS 2021

PUHOI & MAHURANGI WEST

The small rural community of Puhoi is located 50 kilometres north of Auckland and is the southern gateway to the Matakana region. Positioned between rolling farmland, native bush and the Puhoi River, the historical village is a short detour from State Highway 1 and an excellent way to break up your journey north.

While small, Puhoi is rich in history and dates back to the mid-1800s when immigrants from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) first settled. Both the local museum and the iconic Puhoi Pub have a fascinating selection of artifacts and photographs dating back nearly 150 years. In addition, the Puhoi Heritage Trail is a self-guided walking tour that takes you past over 20 different local sites and is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the village’s pioneering history.

Once you carry on your travels, just another five minutes further from Puhoi is the entrance to Mahurangi West, where you will find incredible views out to the Hauraki Gulf and the western entrance to the Mahurangi Regional Park.

BEACHES, PARKS AND CAMPING

Mahurangi West has some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches in the Auckland region (in our humble opinion, anyway).

Otarawao Bay (Sullivans Bay) is the only beach within Mahurangi West with vehicle access and is just a 10-minute detour from State Highway 1. Once you arrive at the beach, you will find a calm, sheltered bay with views across the water to Lagoon Bay at Mahurangi East. There is a campsite located at the northern end of the beach that allows tents and self-contained vehicles. Be sure to book in advance over summer as there are limited sites, which can book up quickly.

Secluded Te Muri Beach is located at the southern end of the Mahurangi Regional Park and is the perfect place to avoid the summer crowds. With no vehicle access, the only way to reach Te Muri Beach is by boat or foot from Sullivans Bay at low tide.

A basic campground near the beach is available for tents, but make sure you bring everything from your car as it’s a 1.3km trip back if you forget anything. The second beach that is accessible only by foot and boat is Otuawao Bay (Mita Bay). The quiet beach is a 1.8km walk north from Sullivans Bay car park so pack lightly. Once you get to Tungutu Point, you can choose to follow the track to go over the rocks, which is only accessible for two hours on either side of low tide. However, it’s worth the effort once you arrive, as you will find a beautiful, secluded white sand cove surrounded by native bush. There is also a very basic campsite at Mita Bay where you may very well be the only tent.

The sheltered waters surrounding the beaches at Mahurangi West are fantastic for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply cooling off.

PUHOI RIVER

The calm and sheltered Puhoi River stretches for 8km down to Wenderholm Regional Park. The river meanders slowly towards the ocean providing the perfect backdrop for a leisurely day out on the water. You can hire kayaks from Puhoi village, and once you arrive at

Wenderholm, you will be taken back to Puhoi just in time for a well-deserved drink. The best part is, for the most part, you will be travelling with the tide, so there isn’t a huge amount of paddling required until you get closer to Wenderholm.

BIKE AND WALKING TRACKS

The Puhoi Track is part of the Te Araroa Trail that runs the length of the country. The 5km (one way) track takes you through native bush and high up along the ridgeline, where you will get glimpses across the Puhoi Valley. Whether you intend just to do one way or make the return trip, we suggest finishing up at the Puhoi Domain end so you can wander over the road to the pub for some liquid refreshments.

Within the regional park at Mahurangi West, you will find three fantastic walks exploring the different corners of the park. These walks are a great way to discover the remote beaches of the Peninsula and enjoy breathtaking views across the Hauraki Gulf and out to the Coromandel. Each separate track ranges from two to three hours in duration and can even be combined into one extra-long track.

If off-road mountain biking is more of your thing, an 85km loop (with no shortcuts!) starts from Puhoi village. With over 1000m of elevation, the mostly gravel track will

take you through rural farmland and natural bush as you make your way out to the West Coast towards the Kaipara Harbour.

HOLIDAYING WITH FAMILIES

Kayaking down the Puhoi River is perfect for the whole family. Single and double kayaks are available to hire, as well as a Canadian canoe that holds two adults and two children. Once you arrive at Wenderholm, the kids will have a fantastic time swimming and playing amongst the Pohutukawa.

SHOPPING

The Village Market Day is held on the last Sunday of every month at the Puhoi Sports Club. Selling everything from arts and crafts to artisan food and local produce, the markets are a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning with a coffee in hand made from locally roasted beans.

Aside from picking up necessities at the well-stocked Puhoi General Store,

The Puhoi Valley Cheese Store and Café is a great place to take both kids and dogs. With a large grassy area out front and a fenced-in play area, the kids will be entertained while you take a moment to browse inside.

visitors will need to make their way to nearby Warkworth township for any major groceries and services.

WARKWORTH

Often referred to as the gateway to the Matakana Coast, Warkworth is becoming a destination in and of itself. With a friendly, country atmosphere and under an hours drive from the Auckland CBD, Warkworth is becoming popular with those looking for a more relaxed lifestyle whilst still being within commuting distance from the city.

WARKWORTH CEMENT WORKS

If you’re looking to take a dip and can’t bring yourself to join the masses at the beach, the Warkworth Cement Works is located a short drive from the town centre on Wilson Road. Perched on the banks of the Mahurangi River, the flooded quarry provides a freshwater swimming hole for the public to enjoy.

A sunny day can be spent picnicking on the water’s edge surrounded by the historic ruins of what was once the Southern Hemisphere’s first Portland cement manufacturer. However, a word of warning to those with small children, the swimming hole gets deep straight away, so be sure to pack the floaties

PARKS

Parry Kauri Park is located just south of Warkworth and is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch. A short detour off State Highway 1, Parry Kauri Park is home to the two tallest Kauri Trees on the East Coast of New Zealand.

The 8.5-hectare park is primarily made up of dense native bush dating back

thousands of years, with various loop tracks weaving through, ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes in duration. These walks are great for the whole family, with informative signs located throughout explaining the native trees and birdlife that live within the grounds.

The local Warkworth and District Museum

is also located at the park. You will find historical displays, photographs, and items dating back to the Kauri Gum digging days of the region, including large pieces of Kauri Gum.

Lucy Moore Park is another quiet picturesque spot located on the eastern end of the town centre. With plenty of parking, Lucy Moore Park sits right on the river’s edge and is great for families with a double flying fox and plenty of room for children and dogs to run around off-leash.

BIKE AND WALKING TRACKS

Whilst, not a long walk, it’s a lovely one – the path that runs along the Mahurangi Riverbank takes you between Lucy Moore Park and the old road bridge. Lined with native Pohutukawa and Kowhai trees, the easy walk is a perfect way to take in the picturesque riverside.

The walk at Kowhai Park next to the infamous Hill Street intersection is a great way to stretch your legs after a long journey. The dog-friendly track is a 30-minute loop that takes you through the native bush of Kauri and Totara trees and past historic lime kilns dating back to the late-1800s.

Just north of town, the Warkworth Showgrounds is an excellent spot for the family (both two and four-legged) to go to burn off some energy. Recently upgraded and with more works in the pipeline, the Showgrounds is home to the Mahurangi Rugby Club along with the local Pony Club, netball courts, hockey turf and has a great playground for the kids. There is a 2km track that runs around the grounds’ perimeter and is incredibly popular with friendly locals walking their dogs. Be sure to keep your dog on the lead if the Pony Club is meeting.

EVENTS

The Kowhai Festival runs for a month and is held every year in Spring to coincide with the flowering of the bright yellow Kowhai Trees that line the town and river. There are many different events run by volunteers throughout October including a Family Day Out, Mahurangi Riverside Vibes, Great Debate and even an outdoor movie night extravaganza. Mahurangi Riverside Vibes located on the river hosts local artisan food and wine and a large stage featuring live music throughout the day. The Family Day out offers a great day for the family and kids who will be entertained with games, rides and the recently reintroduced famous Kowhai Festival Raft Race.

The Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights is one of the newest events on the Warkworth social calendar and has quickly become one of the most popular. During the day, the Warkworth wharf turns into a kids wonderland with amusements and rides, face painting, an ice skating rink and food trucks. Once the sun goes down, the town centre lights up with laser light and music shows held throughout the evening.

SHOPPING

With the perfect mix of well-known retail stores and independent boutiques and galleries, Warkworth is the hub of the area and the best place to stock up on the essentials (and some non-essentials) before travelling further afield.

The town centre is the main hub for the surrounding areas with a full range of businesses and services including branches of each of the major national

Another event on the local social calendar is the Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show, which takes place every year at the local showgrounds. With a line-up of local music, delicious food and the free Fun Zone for the children, the A&P Show is always a fun day out for the whole family and a great way to get an insight into the local farming way of life.

banks, a post office, information centre and two large supermarkets.

Necessities aside, a wander through town will take you past several cafés, boutiques and galleries. For those on the lookout for second-hand pieces, there are several opportunity and charity shops in the area where you can pick up vintage and retro items for a bargain price.

SNELLS BEACH, ALGIES BAY & MARTINS BAY

Mahurangi Peninsula is located just a 10-minute drive from Warkworth and is a small collection of coastal communities and regional parks. BEACHES, PARKS AND CAMPING

When it comes to beaches and parks, the Mahurangi Peninsula is bursting at the seams.

As you make your way along the peninsula, the first beach that you will reach is Snells Beach. There is great swimming a couple of hours on either side of high tide, and when the tide is out, the shallow waters create a fantastic playground for young ones. There

are a couple of different spots along the beach that allow camping for selfcontained vehicles.

Algies Bay is located just a couple of minutes drive past Snells Beach. With shelter provided by the Tawharanui Peninsula and Kawau Island, the calm, clear waters offer safe swimming for three hours on either side of high tide.

SCOTTS LANDING

As you head up over the hill past Algies Bay, a detour off to your right will take you to historic Scotts Landing. Now part of Mahurangi Regional Park, Scotts Landing used to be the commercial gateway to Warkworth and the surrounding area.

The restored homestead sits centre stage on the waterfront and is surrounded by a public reserve with shady Macrocarpa trees. The shallow waters overlooking Mahurangi West are perfect for little ones in need of cooling off.

WALKING TRACKS

Scandrett Regional Park has two main loop tracks that take you through historical and current farmland. The Kawau Bay Track and the Mullet Point Track are approximately one hour in duration and have stunning views back along Scandrett Bay. In addition, a couple of shorter tracks throughout the park lead to lookouts and historic sites, and even a short trail that takes you over to neighbouring Martins Bay.

SCANDRETT REGIONAL PARK

Scandrett Regional Park is located just 3km past Algies Bay and is a wonderful way to experience a slice of Kiwi history. Not only are there Maori pa sites situated in the park, but the original homestead and farm buildings dating back to the late-1800s have been lovingly restored for the public to enjoy. There are three restored Kiwi baches at Scandrett available to rent from the Auckland Regional Council. With the water right at your front door and the farm behind you, these provide the quintessential Kiwi summer holiday experience. There are also four self-contained vehicle spots available for one night each.

The last stop on your drive along the Peninsula is Martins Bay. With a water ski lane at the northern end and easy access to Kawau Island, Martins Bay is popular with boaties launching straight

from the beach. There are plenty of shady Pohutukawa’s to settle in under for the day and a fantastic holiday park right by the beach, which has just as many facilities for boaties as it does for families.

If you are lucky enough to have access to a boat, then you will be able to explore some of the most remote areas of the Mahurangi Regional Park. Saddlers Point consists of two beaches - Lagoon Beach and Big Bay - both only accessible by boat.

KAWAU ISLAND

Kawau Island is one of the largest islands in the Hauraki Gulf and is situated just a short boat ride from Sandspit Wharf. The beauty of Kawau is that it’s close enough for a day trip from Auckland but far enough away that the city feels like a distant memory. Abandoned by Maori tribes in the 1800s, Kawau Island became a busy mining settlement followed by the private residence of one of the first Governors of New Zealand, Sir George Grey. Today, the historic island has a small population of permanent residents, along with several holiday houses. With a unique microclimate and plenty to do both on and off the water, Kawau is the perfect spot for a day trip or week away.

MANSION HOUSE

The Kawau Island Historic Reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation and makes up 10% of the island. It was created to protect the stately home and sub-tropical gardens that once belonged to Sir George Grey.

George Grey purchased the island in 1862 and extended what was once the mine manager’s home to create Mansion House. Now fully restored to its former glory with an impressive collection of antique furnishings, this stately home sits on the water’s edge of aptly named Mansion House Bay and is one of the

most popular spots on the island to visit.

The gardens surrounding the historic building are home to Wallabies, Weka and Peacocks and are the perfect place to stop for lunch. There is a café on-site and electric BBQ facilities available. There is a strict “pack it in, pack it out” policy for those bringing food on to the island, take everything you bring on to the island back to the mainland with you.

Beyond the gardens, there is native bush with walking tracks leading to secluded beaches, Maori Pa sites, and the old Coppermine.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Only accessible by boat, the water activities begin before you even arrive at the island. So, whether you choose to take the ferry, water taxi or find your own way there, you may find schools of fish or even a pod of dolphins joining alongside for the ride.

The bays surrounding Kawau have for years been favourite fishing spots for locals in the know. With the Snapper venturing into shallower waters over

the summer months, boatless anglers rejoice as they set up a perch on either the rocks or one of the many jetties around the island.

The sub-tropical temperatures make Kawau Island is a great place to enjoy the surrounding waters. There are many secluded beaches dotted around the island, each offering great diving and snorkelling.

WALKING TRACKS

With several tracks weaving around and plenty of historical stops and private beaches along the way, Kawau Island is a great place to explore on foot.

A lot of the most popular walks conveniently start at Mansion House Bay. These range in length from a 10 to 20-minute walk to the neighbouring

beaches and panoramic lookouts, through to the 2.5 hour round trip to the historic Coppermine.

The walk to the Coppermine will take you through shaded tracks and past remote beaches to the historic remains of the old engine house.

ROYAL MAIL RUN

An excellent way to visit and learn about the island is the Royal Mail Run. This is the largest mail run by water in the Southern Hemisphere and is a great way to learn about Kawau Island and its inhabitants. Departing Sandspit at 10:30am every day, the ferry goes around the island, dropping off the post to the local residents. You’re then given the opportunity to either enjoy a BBQ lunch on board or bring along a picnic to enjoy on dry land.

BEACHES, PARKS AND CAMPING

Vivian Bay is a white sandy bay located at the northern end of Kawau Island. With a popular restaurant located on the water’s edge, it is a great spot to set up for the day over summer. The sheltered bay is one of the scheduled ferry stops from Sandspit and is also a great spot to drop your anchor during a Southerly.

There are a number of beaches and coves dotted around the island, some of which are much more accessible than others. The majority of the island is privately owned, however, any beaches within the Historic Reserve can be reached via the public walking tracks. Any other remote spots will need to be explored by boat or kayak.

As for camping, there are no traditional campsites on Kawau, however, at North Cove, you will find Camp Bentzon. This is the go-to accommodation choice for school camps during the week but is also available for group bookings at the weekend. The nightly charge to stay at Camp Bentzon includes the use of kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats and the use of the fitness trail. The camp sleeps up to 120 people in bunk beds, and there is a commercial-sized kitchen and BBQ facilities.

If you are planning to have an extended stay at Kawau, we suggest renting one of the many privately-owned holiday homes around the island.

46
Camp Bentzon, North Cove

SAVOUR

There are only three options for dining out on Kawau, and this is all part of the charm. We suggest that you check the opening hours before planning a visit as restaurant opening hours can vary depending on the time of year.

SHOPPING

There is no supermarket on the island, so if you’re staying for longer than a day, make sure you stock up on groceries before leaving the mainland. If you forget anything or run out of essentials, you can pick up general store items at the Kawau Boating Club at Bon Accord Harbour.

BON ACCORD BAR & BISTRO

Nestled within the historic Kawau Boating Club, Bon Accord Bar & Bistro is fully licensed and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Selling ice, bait, general store items and 24/7 fuel. Get there in your own boat or catch the ferry from Sandspit.

MATAKANA, OMAHA & POINT WELLS

Thanks to the local farmer’s markets, boutiques, thriving art scene and, of course, surrounding beaches, the once small, rural village of Matakana is now one of the most popular holiday spots and sought-after postcodes in the country. The township of Matakana dates back to the mid-1800s when it was initially known for its timber milling and shipbuilding. Over the following decades, an agriculture and dairy industry was introduced, and the small area became a thriving, rural community. Timber milling continued to be a major part of the town for years to come, with the old timber yard now home to the famous Saturday farmers’ markets and village shops.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Cruising and Kayaking

What was once the only way in and out of the small township, the Matakana River, is a peaceful, scenic river that wends out to the Pacific Ocean. Hour-long cruises depart from Matakana Wharf during full tide, where passengers are treated to an entertaining and informative journey where they can soak up the area’s history whilst enjoying a glass of local beer or wine. For those who prefer a self-guided approach, kayaks are also available for hire from Matakana Wharf.

Fishing

With its abundance of Snapper, Kingfish and Kahawai, Omaha Bay and its surrounding coves and islands are incredibly popular amongst the fishing community. For boaties looking to head out towards Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands, Omaha Beach Boat Ramp is the closest option and is a hive of activity over the weekends and summer months.

For those that prefer to stick to dry land, there are plenty of rock structures dotted around the coast. The rocks at the southern end of Omaha Beach are popular with locals looking to land themselves a Kahawai.

The groynes at the beach’s northern end are also popular, with keen anglers happy to perch on the rocks – be sure to check the tides though!

Tawharanui Regional Park is also popular with people wanting to fish from the rocks. The northern coastline of the regional park is a marine reserve where all fishing is prohibited, however, once you get past the markers at either side of the reserve, you’re free to fish. Access to some of the more secluded spots can be a bit challenging, so maybe leave the kids at home and keep an eye on the tides.

BIKE AND WALKING TRACKS

Ranging from short meanderings to daylong tramps, there are plenty of walking tracks in the area, all of which take in the picturesque and changing landscape of the region.

The Matakana Cycle Trail extends from Matakana to Omaha Beach, with a separate detour to Point Wells. The twoway track is suitable for the whole family, with places to stop along the way for coffee, ice cream or even a wine tasting. The trail is open to runners, walkers, and cyclists, and for those travelling light, bikes can be hired from Matakana Village.

Connecting to the Omaha end of the Matakana Cycle Track, the Quarry Loop is a great walk found at the southern point of

Omaha Beach. Once you have walked the 130 steps to the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views back across Omaha Bay and beyond.

For those looking for something a bit more advanced, the Mount Tamahunga Walkway is located just a 5-minute drive from Matakana Village towards Leigh and provides some of the best views in the area. The walk to the summit takes approximately 1.5 hours and is a mix of private farmland and regenerating native bush and can become quite steep towards the top. Once you arrive at the summit, there are a couple of different options to come back down, each varying in length. Heck, if you’re really keen, you can even walk all the way to Pakiri!

BEACHES, PARKS & CAMPING

Omaha Beach

With picturesque views over to Little Barrier Island, Omaha Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the country, and rightly so. What used to be predominantly a holiday spot for weekenders over the summer months, Omaha is now a thriving community all year round.

The 3km of white sand beach is patrolled at the weekends between Labour Weekend and Easter and every day over the busy summer school holidays. While there are no camping facilities at Omaha Beach, several holiday houses are available to rent at both the beach and nearby Point Wells.

Omaha Beach is also home to one of New Zealand’s top-rated golf courses. The Omaha Beach Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 70 Links course situated right on the water’s edge, with a clubhouse and community centre that is popular with members and locals alike.

Tawharanui Regional Park

Located just a 20-minute drive from Matakana Village, Tawharanui Regional Park is over 580 hectares of protected open sanctuary. It combines white sand beaches, grazing livestock, endangered birdlife and native forest and is one of the most popular spots in the area.

The most popular beach within Tawharanui Regional Park for day-trippers is Anchor Bay Beach. There are toilets and changing facilities near Anchor Bay, but that’s where the facilities at the beach end, so be sure to pack a picnic. As with all of the regional parks in the area, make sure you check the park rules before visiting.

There is a basic DOC campsite available at Tawharanui, which is situated just 100m back from the beach – we suggest booking in advance for the summer months as there are limited sites available. There are several walking tracks throughout the park for those looking to explore, including approximately 9km of mountain bike track. The walking tracks vary in length and difficulty, so be sure to read up on them at the Information Site located near Anchor Bay.

For nature lovers, Tawharanui is now home to many endemic and native bird species that were released here as part of the Open Sanctuary. You can either visit the bird colonies dotted around the park or attend a guided Native Bird Spotting tour that runs in the evening and promises a high possibility of spotting a Kiwi.

Unbeknownst to many visitors making their way to Tawharanui Regional Park, there are a couple of hidden gems along the Peninsula. Baddeleys Beach, Buckletons Beach and Campbells Beach are all sheltered bays that are perfect for families.

With views across the Hauraki Gulf, these lovely little bays are also popular with boaties who can launch straight from the beach. Whilst there are no camping facilities in the area, Baddeleys Beach has public toilets and changing rooms available for those looking to settle in for the day.

HOLIDAYING WITH FAMILIES

So long as the sun is shining, you won’t struggle to come up with ways to entertain the kiddies. If the kids are tired of playing in the surf Omaha Beach, there are plenty of bike-friendly tracks running the length of the beach, passing playgrounds and tennis courts along the way. At Tawharanui, the playground is provided by nature with several rock pools and caves for the kids to explore during low tide.

Matakana Country Park is another excellent place for the kids to expel some energy. There is a petting zoo, pony rides, a miniature train ride, and a playground

for the young ones. Over the Summer, Action Ninja World is open and is great for older children and the young at heart. For the adults, there’s a small selection of retail and a popular art gallery, along with a restaurant, café and bar.

If the weather is being uncooperative or you simply feel you need a break from the beach, the Matakana Cinemas is a great option for the whole family. The three-theatre boutique cinema shows a wide selection of films from Hollywood blockbusters right through to small art-house productions.

THE MATAKANA VILLAGE FARMERS’ MARKET

The Matakana Village Farmers’ Markets are so popular that they deserve a little section all to themselves. What was once a local timber yard is now home to these famous markets every Saturday morning.

With live music, local artisan food and produce, fresh flowers and locally roasted coffee, it definitely pays to put aside a couple of hours and head along with an empty basket and an even emptier belly.

SHOPPING

Whether you’re looking for ceramics, a great book, beautiful flowers or some designer duds, the Matakana Village has a beautiful selection of boutiques open every day. If you then carry on along Matakana Valley Road, you will find more stylish shops selling homewares, gifts and clothing.

Once you arrive at Omaha Beach, you can pick up any last-minute holiday

SAVOUR

Thanks to its Tuscany-Esque climate, the Matakana Coast boasts one of the country’s most diverse selections of wine varieties. Most of the local wineries offer tastings (some by appointment only), and there are a few local businesses that run guided wine tours.

If you prefer your drinks hops based, there are now a couple of different craft

essentials from the small selection of shops near the Surf Life Saving Club. Here you will find a Superette, café, gift and homeware store, depending on your idea of “essential”, and a real estate agent.

There is a local Four Square with a post office in Matakana, however, if you need to stock up for an extended length of time, there are two large supermarkets in nearby Warkworth.

breweries in the area, each with its own version of a cellar door.

As you make your way to Omaha from Warkworth, you are surrounded by orchards and crops growing a variety of seasonal fresh fruit and veg. It is highly recommended to make sure you have room in your boot and change in your car so you can make the most of the many roadside stalls along the way.

LEIGH, GOAT ISLAND & PAKIRI

The small coastal village of Leigh is the perfect place to make the most of the warmer summer months. Home to the famous Goat Island Marine Reserve and Pakiri Beach, the area is brimming with things to do for all ages. Once an area used for sawmilling and boat building, Leigh is now a bustling fishing village overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The 20-minute drive past Matakana is worth every second as when you arrive, you are rewarded with stunning views out to sea and some of the best (and freshest) fish and chips in New Zealand, if not the world.

BEACHES, PARKS AND CAMPING

Whangateau

As you make your way along Leigh Road from Matakana, you will pass through the small settlement of Whangateau. Home to what is likely one of the most picturesque sports fields in the country, Whangateau also has a playground and lots of room for kids to run around.

The narrow harbour runs between Omaha and Ti Point and is perfect for swimming, boating and kayaking.

A wonderful holiday park on the water’s edge offers a range of accommodation options and endless activities for the whole family. With kayaks, paddleboards and bikes for hire and a TV and games room, you will be able to keep the kids entertained, no matter the weather.

Mathesons Bay

Mathesons Bay is a small cove located just a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive from Leigh Village. With a large playground near the beach and plenty of rockpools to explore, the secluded beach is the perfect place to set up for the day with the family.

There are no camping facilities at Mathesons, however, it is one of the few places in the area with space for certified self-contained vehicles to stay for up to two nights.

Goat Island

Named after the small island sitting just off-shore, Goat Island Marine Reserve is located just out of Leigh and is a great way to spend a day over Summer. The marine reserve was established in 1975 to protect and preserve the surrounding marine life and, for this very reason, has some of the best diving and snorkelling in the country.

The best part about Goat Island is that you can simply snorkel and dive straight from

the beach. You don’t have to venture far from shore to come face-to-face with schools of fish, and the nearby island and many reefs around the reserve provide great diving and snorkelling conditions.

There are plenty of places to hire snorkel gear in Leigh or at the nearby campsites. If you’re a certified diver, there is scuba equipment available for hire, along with the option of a guided scuba tour. For those who prefer to keep a bit of distance between them and the creatures beneath the ocean, clear kayaks are available for hire from Goat Island Beach. These kayaks provide you with a front-row seat to what lies beneath and are a fantastic way of enjoying the reserve whilst keeping dry. Alternatively, the famous Glass Bottom Boat offers an informative 45-minute tour where you can learn about the history and preservation of Goat Island.

Another great way to immerse yourself in the Marine Reserve is to visit the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre. Part of the University of Auckland, the Discovery Centre, with its state-of-the-art interactive displays and a tide pool tank, is a fantastic way to learn about the marine environment.

If you’re looking to stay overnight, there are campsites and backpackers located near Goat Island, along with holiday homes for rent in nearby Leigh.

A word to the wise, Goat Island is incredibly popular with day-trippers, so be sure to arrive early to secure your spot and avoid the masses.

Pakiri

If you carry on a further 15 minutes past Leigh, you will find yourself at the white

84

sand surf beach of Pakiri. Be sure to pull over at the top of Pakiri Hill, where you will be treated to spectacular views from north to south, and on a clear day, you might even be able to spot the Auckland Sky Tower.

Once you arrive at Pakiri, you are rewarded with 14km of white sand beach that stretches up to Te Arai Point at the northern end. Pakiri is incredibly popular with surfers, but it’s not as busy as other

surf beaches in the region due to its more remote locality. The beach is patrolled over the summer months, but if you’re looking for something a little calmer, an estuary is at the southern end of the beach, which is great for families with younger children.

A holiday park is located just a 2-minute walk from the beach with a range of different accommodation options and excellent facilities for the whole family.

FISHING

Before dropping your line in, be sure to familiarise yourself with the boundaries of the Goat Island Marine Reserve, which prohibits any fishing between Okakari Point in the north down to Cape Rodney.

The coastline between Big Omaha and Pakiri is dotted with wharves and rocky points that are excellent for fishing. So long as you’re on either side of the marine reserve boundary, then setting yourself up at one of these spots puts you in good stead for catching yourself a Snapper from dry land.

Another option for fishing from dry land is casting from Pakiri Beach. Discerning locals can be found near the river mouth at dusk trying to land a good-sized Snapper or Kahawai.

For those looking to head out to sea, boats can be launched from Leigh Harbour, Big Omaha and Ti Point. Several reefs are located just out from Leigh, which are great for fishing for Snapper, Kingfish, Terakihi and John Dory. These boat ramps are also a good starting point for those looking to head towards Little Barrier Island.

WALKING TRACKS

For a small area, Leigh has many scenic walking tracks to choose from. So, whether you prefer the shelter of the native bush, rolling farmland or gazing out to sea from the elevated coastline, Leigh has plenty of options for walkers of all ages and abilities.

The Leigh Harbour Path is a two-hour return walk from Leigh Boat Ramp that makes its way up towards Cape Rodney. The harbour is still a working wharf, and if you time it right, you can watch the commercial fishing boats unload their daily catch. The walk will take you through native bush, along the rocky ridges of the harbour and down to quiet, sandy beaches.

The Leigh Coastal Path is a one-hour return trip along the Pohutukawa lined coastline of Leigh. With stunning views across Omaha Bay and the islands beyond, lucky walkers are often rewarded with dolphins, orcas and whales playing in the ocean below.

The Matheson Bay Bush Track links walkers back up to Leigh Road from the beach via native bush. The track itself is well established, and there’s a boardwalk and steps for the steeper parts. You will pass the Kohuroa Stream Waterfalls along the way there, and there is even a swimming hole for those needing to cool down. Once you arrive at Leigh Road, you can either turn around and head back down the way you came or wander

brigade. There is entertainment for the kids throughout the day and live music. The prize-giving isn’t to be missed as all entries go into the draw to win a boat and outboard package, and if you’re not there when your name is drawn, you’ll miss out!

back down Matheson Bay Road to the cove below.

The Goat Island Coastal Walk begins at the Auckland University Marine Laboratory and is approximately an hour each way, depending on what route you choose. Heading along the rugged coastline to Tabletop Reef, the views across to Hen and Chickens Island, Pakiri and the Hauraki Gulf are outstanding. Once you arrive at the end, you can either turn around and take in the views for a second time or take the Farm Loop back to the beginning.

For those looking to get their daily step count up, combing these four tracks will take you from Mathesons Bay all the way to Goat Island. A slight detour halfway along into Leigh Village provides you with a much-deserved coffee or ice cream pit stop. Ensure you leave your dog at home as they are prohibited on the Mathesons Bay Bush Track and the Goat Island Coastal Walk.

The Ti Point Wharf Track is a two-hour return walk with breathtaking views of Omaha Beach and Little Barrier Island. Starting from Ti Point Wharf just five minutes before you reach Leigh, this easy track is perfect for the whole family. The kids will love playing amongst the

Pohutukawa Trees that line the coast and, when the tide is out, the rocky shoreline can be a fun alternative route. The turnaround point at the end of the track is a popular spot for fishing and rock climbing. Now, for those who are really keen, the Mount Tamahunga Track, which runs from Pakiri to Matakana Valley Road, is part of the Te Araroa Track that runs the length of the country. The 11km track starts opposite the campground at Pakiri Beach and takes walkers along Pakiri River, across farmland to Mount Tamahunga. The track has a fairly steep ascent about 3km in, but from there, you are rewarded with fantastic panoramic views along the coast.

HOLIDAYING WITH FAMILIES

When visiting Leigh over the summer with children, you truly are spoilt for choice. There is a skatepark right by Leigh Primary School and playgrounds at both Matheson Bay and Whangateau.

Kids of all ages will have an incredible time exploring the rock pools at both Goat Island and Matheson Bay or spending the day in the surf at Pakiri Beach.

A fantastic way to discover Pakiri is by horseback. There are guided tours available with options ranging from a

LOCAL AREAS

Wellsford

Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the North’, the farming town of Wellsford is also the gateway to beautiful surf beaches to the east and the magnificent Kaipara Harbour in the west.

Te Hana

The small settlement of Te Hana is just 5 minutes drive north of Wellsford and is home to the Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre. Te Hana Te Ao Marama has a range of tours that allow you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Maori culture whilst getting an insight into 17th-century pre-European Maori life.

Heading north, Kaiwaka is the first settlement as you cross over to Northland. Known as the “Little Town of Lights”, the local businesses have adorned their buildings with lights that come to life after the sun goes down.

WALKS, PARKS AND CAMPING

Atiu Creek Regional Park

Just west of Wellsford on the Tapora Peninsula is Atiu Creek Regional Park. With over 800 hectares of unspoiled rural land overlooking the Kaipara Harbour, the working farm is open to the public for everyone to enjoy.

Atiu Creek is made up of wetlands, native bush and rolling farmlands so, whilst it’s not known for its beach holidays, it’s perfect for an active one. Several shared tracks weave their way around the park that are popular with walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders.

If you are looking for more than a day trip, Courtyard House is a cottage complex that can sleep up to 23 people and even has a separate event building. However, this is often booked in advance, so be sure to check availability. There is also a basic campsite within the park near Solomon’s Bay, and self-contained vehicles are

permitted to stay in the car park for one night. If you intend to explore the park by horseback, you must have a permit from Auckland Council. There are also overnight horse paddocks near both the campsite and Courtyard House for those who decide to stay over.

Dome Valley Summit Track

The Dome Valley Summit Track is a 3-hour round trip from the Dome Valley Tea Rooms just north of Warkworth. The first 40 minutes is an easy walk to the lookout, where you can enjoy views across the Peninsula and out to the Hauraki Gulf. From there, walkers have two choices – turn around and head back for a cup of tea or carry on up the steep and rocky track to the Summit, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views across the Valley. The path crosses sacred Iwi land, so walkers need to ensure that they are respectful and keep on the track.

MANGAWHAI

Mangawhai is the perfect combination of rural and coastal living. Nestled between acres of green farmland and the Pacific Ocean, what was once a quiet surf retreat off the beaten track is now a main stop when travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Highway.

MANGAWHAI HEADS BEACH

With the green rolling hills behind you and the crashing surf in front, a summer’s day at Mangawhai Heads Beach is hard to beat. Patrolled by the local surf life-saving team over summer, it’s a safe, familyfriendly beach popular with surfers and swimmers alike.

Over the busy summer months, it pays to get there early to settle in for the day

MANGAWHAI HARBOUR

Overlooking the dunes that protect it from the rugged coastline beyond, the Mangawhai Harbour is the perfect place to set up with the family for a day of swimming, diving or boating. The calm waters of the lagoon-style harbour are safe for children to splash around and provide perfect sheltered conditions for those wanting to kayak or paddleboard.

There is a great family-friendly holiday park located right on the water’s edge, with both powered and unpowered sites, cabins and units to rent.

– whilst the car park may look big, this fills up quickly when the sun is out.

Even if you don’t intend to get in the surf, make sure you pack your boogie board as the large dunes further down the beach are great for riding down.

While there is no camping at the beach itself, a great holiday park is located just a 5-minute drive down the road.

TE

ARAI REGIONAL PARK

Once you arrive at Te Arai Regional Park, it’s hard to believe that you’re still in Auckland. The beach stretches north to the mouth of the Mangawhai Estuary, providing 10km of pristine white sand beach.

Both Te Arai Beach and neighbouring Forestry (just south of Te Arai Regional Park) are great beaches for surfing, boogie boarding or just playing in the surf. The old quarry hole lagoon is located just down from the car park, which provides

TOMARATA LAKE

Tomarata Lake is one of three dune lakes in the Mangawhai Forest and is a bit of a local’s secret. Surrounded by forest and farmland, the shallow lake is excellent for swimming, waterskiing and kayaking

WATER ACTIVITIES

Learn to Surf

Mangawhai Heads Beach and Te Arai Beach have long been popular spots for people wanting to learn to surf. There are a couple of different surf schools in the area which are more than willing to assist keen learners in taking up the sport.

Kayak and Paddleboarding

The calm waters of the Mangawhai Harbour are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Whether you make your way over to the spit or head towards the estuary, this is an active yet relaxing way to get out on the water. Part of the spit is protected, so be sure to check where you’re allowed to go before embarking on your journey.

Fishing

Both the Mangawhai Harbour and the Estuary provide some great fishing spots

fantastic, sheltered swimming.

Whilst most visitors are there for the swimming and surfing, there are also some great tracks throughout the park, taking in stunning panoramic views from Bream Head in the north down to Pakiri.

There is a basic self-contained certified campground located at the end of Te Arai Point Road that allows for up to ten vehicles.

and even has a boat ramp allowing for easy launching. Unfortunately, camping at Tomarata Lake is not permitted, but it makes for a great day trip.

for those looking to get a Snapper or a Kahawhai. There are two boat ramps located at the Harbour, both of which provide easy launching and plenty of parking for trailers.

If you’re keen to head out to the open ocean, you’re just a short boat ride from Bream Bay in the north, where you will find world-class fishing and diving. However, if you don’t have a boat, don’t worry – there are plenty of fishing charters that are more than happy to have a day out on the water.

If you prefer to stock up the chilly bin from dry land, Mangawhai Heads and Te Arai are both great spots to cast from the beach.

WALKING TRACKS

Often referred to as “the walking capital of the north”, Mangawhai truly is the perfect place to explore by foot.

Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway

The most famous walk in the area is hands-down the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway. The 5km (return) track wends along the coastal clifftops and is the best way to take in the rugged coast. Voted one of New Zealand’s best short walks, the breathtaking views from the track reach from Bream Head in the North right down to the Hauraki Gulf. The track begins at the Mangawhai Heads Surf Life Saving Club, taking you north along the beach for about 20 minutes before turning inland. From there, you will make your way up and along the elevated ridgeline taking in the spectacular views along the way. Once you reach the end of the track, you then have the option of walking back along the clifftops or coming along the beach (three hours on either side of low tide).

Tanekaha Walking Tracks

These are a series of different loop tracks on the southern slopes of the Brynderwyn Hills. The trails are accessed from Kings Road, just before Mangawhai Heads, and once you reach the swing bridge, you have the choice of going in two directions – the Tanekaha Forest Track and the Tanekaha Falls Track. From the Forest Track, you have stunning views back out across Mangawhai and the rural landscape below. The Falls Track will take you past three waterfalls, each more spectacular than the previous. The great thing is, if you have the time and inclination, you can experience both the falls and the breathtaking views by combining a few of the tracks to create a 4.5-hour loop.

104
Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway - By Sarah Warrington

Te Arai Point Loop Track

Starting from the car park at the end of Te Arai Point Road, a fantastic 2-hour loop track takes you south along the headlands to Forestry Beach. With spectacular views out across the coast, this is an absolute must-see for nature lovers.

For those who can’t convince their children to do any of the walks, a lookout is located just a few minutes walk from the Mangawhai Information Centre at Mangawhai Heads. Once you climb the wooden structure, you can enjoy views out across the surrounding landscape.

MANGAWHAI ACTIVITY ZONE

The Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) is located next door to the golf club at Mangawhai Heads and is a one-stop shop for children’s entertainment. MAZ is the perfect place to tire the kids out – it consists of a large playground, a

skatepark, pump track, sports fields and is also surrounded by walking and mountain bike trails. There is even an on-site café where parents can grab a well-deserved coffee while the kids happily entertain themselves.

WAIPU & LANGS BEACH

Waipu Cove and Langs Beach are two white-sand beaches located at the southern end of Northland’s Bream Bay. A fishing and diving hot spot, Bream Bay was named by James Cook back in the 1700s after the number of fish he spotted in the clear waters.

The Waipu area was established following a large migration from Scotland in the mid-1800s. Chosen for its proximity to both land and sea, Waipu was perfect for fishing and farming. Fast forward to today, and Waipu is a thriving rural town for those very same reasons.

BEACHES, PARKS AND CAMPING

The Waipu Coast sits at the southern end of Bream Bay and comprises two main beaches – Waipu Cove and Langs Beach. Both beaches are popular with locals and visitors and beautiful in their own right.

Waipu Cove is the larger of the two and is patrolled by lifeguards every weekend between Labour weekend and Easter and every day over the busy holiday period. Famous for swimming, surfing and fishing, Waipu Cove has great facilities with a popular café over the road and a well-stocked General Store nearby.

Langs Beach is a quiet crescent-shaped beach that is a popular spot for holidaygoers. Whist still an excellent beach for swimming, it has much more limited facilities than its larger neighbour and isn’t patrolled at any time of the year. The beach is lined with Pohutukawa

Trees that provide a natural jungle gym for children and welcome shelter to beachgoers over the hot summer months.

The local campground is just a short wander over the dunes from Waipu Cove (or a quick scoot across hot sand over Summer). It has an array of accommodation options, fantastic facilities for families and free BBQs to cook up that day’s catch.

There are free camping facilities at Waipu Caves for both self-contained and nonself-contained vehicles, for a maximum stay of one night.

At the risk of making a secret spot not so secret, the small beach of Ding Bay is located just north of Langs Beach. Only accessible on foot during low tide, it truly feels like one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Just be sure to keep an eye on the tides!

WAIPU TOWN

The small coastal communities of Waipu Cove and Langs Beach are serviced by nearby Waipu, a small dairy farming town famous for its rich Scottish heritage.

With the picturesque Waihoihoi River meandering through, Waipu is just a 10-minute drive from the beaches and

has a great selection of cafés and boutiques. The Boutique Markets are held on the second Sunday of every month inside the Coronation Hall. These fun and friendly markets have over 50 stalls selling everything from homemade pickles and artisan food to local arts and crafts.

120
Langs Beach - By Sarah Warrington

The local award-winning Waipu Museum is located right in the middle of town and is a must-see for history buffs. It has earned an international reputation for telling the story of the area through modern and

innovative exhibits. The museum also runs a fascinating Heritage Trail that takes you back to the early settlement of Waipu, visiting buildings and landmarks along the way.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Surfing

Waipu Cove Beach is a well-known spot amongst the surfing community. Whilst popular with veteran surfers, it’s also a fantastic place for newbies to learn with local surf schools.

Fishing and Diving

The Waipu Coast is a seafood lover’s paradise! Originally named for its vast number of fish, Bream Bay continues to live up to its name to this day. So, whether you’re looking to head out to sea or simply cast from the beach, there’s a good chance you’ll be eating fresh fish for dinner.

As is the case with most places, locals have their favourite spots, which they’re not overly forthcoming in divulging.

However, the local fishing and diving charter companies are more than happy to share their wisdom.

If you’re taking your boat out, there is a boat ramp located conveniently near the local café at the Southern end of Waipu Cove. Tractors and 4WD vehicles can be used to launch at the Southern end of Langs Beach. There is also a ramp at the Waipu Boat and Fishing Club on the banks of the Waipu River.

Hen and Chicken Islands are located just 21km from Waipu Cove and, with a general diving depth of approximately 25 metres, are suitable for all divers. Whilst the islands themselves are protected sanctuaries, the surrounding water is a fantastic spot for diving, fishing and snorkelling. A wide variety of marine

life can be found below the surface, including Blue Maomao, Snapper, Trevally, Crayfish and Scallops.

If you prefer to cast from dry land, either off the beaches or the rocky foreshore are popular spots with the locals.

Waterfall Chasing

Piroa Falls are just a 20-minute drive

inland from Waipu Town Centre. The falls themselves are just a short walk through the gorge and across the Ahuroa River. There are small, shallow water holes along the way, and once you arrive, you will be treated to a deeper waterhole at the base of the falls.

BIKE AND WALKING TRACKS

Waipu Coastal Walkway

The most popular walk in the Waipu area is the Waipu Coastal Walkway which runs from Waipu Cove to Langs Beach, taking in stunning panoramic views across to Hen and Chicken Islands. The southern end of the 3km track is suitable for all abilities, however, once you get closer to Waipu Cove, you will find a couple of obstacles in the form of rocks, steps and ladders.

Waipu Caves Walkway

The Waipu Caves Walkway is approximately 2km each way and starts from the Waipu Caves car park. An excellent follow up to exploring the Waipu Caves, the track takes you past large limestone formations and finishes up on the ridgeline with views across the coast up to the northern point of Bream Head.

Langsview Track

The Langsview Track is a 6.5km (one way) track that goes from Cove Road just south of Langs Beach, with the option to be picked up at Cullen Road or turn around and come back the way you came. The track takes you along the undulating ridgeline and regenerating bush. Once you arrive at the trig, you will be rewarded with incredible views over Langs Beach out to the surrounding islands and inland to the Brynderwyn Range.

EVENTS

Waipu Highland Games

Waipu is proudly home to the longestrunning highland games in the Southern Hemisphere. Running for nearly 150 years and held annually on 1 January, the Games attract thousands of visitors from far and wide. With a jam-packed program filled with entertainment, competitive locals and a whole lot of tartan, the Highland Games is suitable for the entire family and a great way to begin the new year.

Winter in Waipu

Winter in Waipu is held throughout July to celebrate the area’s Scottish heritage. Scheduled to coincide with International Tartan Day on the first of July, the town of Waipu becomes a sea of tartan. There are a number of events held over the course of the month, from the midwinter swim, the Tartan Pet Parade and the famous Art ‘n’ Tartan Wearable Arts competition.

an underground lake and glow worms. The caves are an excellent outing for the whole family but be sure to take your torch and be prepared to get your feet wet. The caves are the perfect way to entertain children on a rainy day.

Over the summer, there is no better place to take the kids than both Waipu Cove and Langs Beach. When they get tired of splashing in the surf, there is a tidal creek at the southern end of Waipu Cove and several rock pools to explore.

The Waipu River is another wonderful spot for families. The sheltered waters of the river are great for kayaking, paddle boarding or catching sprats from the riverbank.

THE BLACK SHED

At The Black Shed they take pleasure in bringing you beautiful homewares, gifts, furniture and accessories. Choose from a great range of internationally and locally sourced objects and textiles, as well as jewellery designed by local artists.

Health authorities advise water tanks be cleaned biennially. The sludge at the bottom of your tank increases and decomposes over time and can contain harmful bacteria and debris. We pump the dirty water out of your tank, waterblast the wall and vacuum sediment/sludge off the floor.
