JUNCTION AWARDS 2022

Puhoi + Mahurangi West

The charming village of Puhoi is the gateway to the regions. It provides the first taste of what delights await you further beyond. Puhoi was initially settled in 1863 by immigrants from Bohemia, an area that is now the Czech Republic and has retained much of its Bohemian atmosphere and culture. Puhoi is positioned between rolling farmland, native bush and the Puhoi River. The village’s pioneering history is well documented, and the iconic Puhoi Pub and the local museum have a fascinating selection of artefacts and photographs dating back nearly 150 years.

Mahurangi West is a stone’s throw away further north and provides a backdrop to three beautiful pohutukawa fringed bays – Sullivans Bay, Mita Bay and Te Muri Bay. All three sheltered bays are perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or simply cooling off. This combined with open pastures and historical sites provide the ultimate Kiwi experience.

Walks

The Puhoi Heritage Trail allows you to immerse yourself in 20 historical sites at your own pace. It is a good idea to check which sites are open when you plan to visit as some areas have different hours for summer and winter.

If you feel like getting into nature, there is the Puhoi Track, a small part of the great Te Araroa Trail that runs the country’s length. This portion is 5km (one way) and leads you through native bush and into the ridgeline, where you can catch glimpses of Puhoi Valley. For off-road mountain bikers, an 85km loop starts from Puhoi Villiage; this mainly gravel track will take you through rural farmland and natural bush and over 1000m of elevation as you travel out to the West Coast.

If you are out Mahurangi West way, other than walking to a secluded beach, there are three more fantastic walks ranging from two to three hours each. All provide incredible views across the Hauraki Gulf and out to the Coromandel; you can join the three together for a super long track. If you are in the mood for a wow factor in a short time frame, the Tungutu Loop Track will provide all you need in no more than 30 minutes return.

Mahurangi West

Sullivans Bay provides the only car parking in the area and is located around 10mins from State Highway 1. It is a calm bay with views out to Lagoon Bay at Mahurangi East. There is a simple campground that allows tents and self-contained vehicles but be warned; it gets booked out incredibly quickly during the summer months. If you are going for the day, ensure you bring all you need, as the closest supermarket is Warkworth. If you time it right with the tide, you can wander out to tiny Pudding Island, between Sullivans Bay and Cudlip Point.

The other two beaches are only accessible by foot or boat but are fantastic if you want to avoid the crowds. Te Muri Bay is located at the southern end and has a basic beachfront campground. Make sure you have everything with you as it is a 1.3km trip back to the car if you forget anything!

The other is Mita Bay which is a 1.8km walk north from the car park to a secluded white sand cove framed with native bush. While this track is more challenging, you may be rewarded by being the only tent at the basic campsite.

Shop

In this neck of the woods there are only a few places to purchase what you need, Puhoi has a well-stocked general store, but for most essentials you will need to get these from from Warkworth. The Puhoi Village Market Day runs on the last Sunday of the month during the warmer months, where you can purchase local arts and crafts as well as artisan food and local produce.

Family friendly

The calm and lazy Puhoi River provides the perfect chance to safely drift down the 8km towards Wenderholm Regional Park in kayaks. The beauty of this river is that for most of it, you cruise with the tide, so the paddling is infrequent until you get closer to Wenderholm. You can hire the Kayaks from Puhoi Village. They have single, double, or a Canadian canoe (which holds two adults and two children!). Part of the package is that they will pick you up and return you to Puhoi.

Warkworth

Best known as the area you passed through before reaching one of its more coastal siblings, Warkworth is no longer such a sleepy town filled with ducks, and is instead worthy of stopping and exploring.

Warkworth is the central shopping hub and is home to two leading supermarkets, numerous places to eat (that will satisfy even the fussiest of eaters) and a chocolate box selection of boutiques and mainstream shops, all located in one handy section of town. Set to grow even more in the next few years once that motorway is complete.

Shop Cement Works

For something a bit different yet impressive, visit the Warkworth Cement Works, located at the end of the narrow and gravelled Wilson Road. In 1880, it was the Southern Hemisphere’s first Portland cement manufacturer; the ru ins are now fenced off but are still incredible to admire. This flooded quar ry provides fresh water to take a dip in – please pack floaties for non-confident s wimmers as it gets deep straight away. This area is full of places to explore in the sun and is also the location choice for the popular Netflix series Sweettooth.

16

Walks

Kowhai Park is located at the Southern end of Warkworth - right by THAT intersection! Currently, some trails are closed to prevent Kauri Dieback, but you can still walk through and witness the now mossy kilns built in 1884. Following the track you will encounter abundant native flora, including the la rgest Matai Trees in the area. A more recent addition are the numerous Weta houses built by a local community group – open the doors and see who is home! This gentle walk will see you finish at the end of Heritage Lane, where you can either turn around and come back through the bush or walk out to Matakana Road.

The Sesquicentennial Walk is a very long name for a short walk! It starts beside the Bridgehouse Lodge and allows you to follow the river along a bush-lined path. You can pop out at the start of Pound Street and walk back down to the main road past the police station, or you can continue the walk under the SH1 bridge and come out near the Scout Den. It is a fantastic track for children to see the little rapids that the Mahurangi River holds, and just past the Scout Den is an amazing playground.

If you cross the old bridge (next to Bridgehouse Lodge) and go down the steps, you can walk next to the river and go through town without stepping on the main street. Following the wharf, you will pass the incredible Jane Gifford that is moored there. The Jane Gifford was built in 1908 and is now the last remaining rigged scow – you can have a look on the website to see when the next river trip will be. There is a fenced playground located just after Jane Gifford, and this is also where the public toilets are. If you stay on the path, you will end up at a vast green space called Lucy Moore Park – named after Lucy Moore, who is known as “the mother of New Zealand Botany” this park is also home to two flying foxes and a fantastic hill to roll down.

If you are heading through Warkworth, stop off at the Warkworth Showgrounds, which has a 2km easy track winding around the outside. This track is popular for dog walkers, but please keep your dog on a leash if the Pony Club is training. There are also rugby grounds, netball courts and a hockey turf, with plenty more planned for the future!

WARKWORTH MUSEUM

After walking through the Parry Kauri park, visit the Warkworth Museum which tells the story of early European settlement, timber felling, gum digging and boat building. The growth of the Warkworth district is showcased through displays containing many heritage items, photographs and textiles of the era.

Mahurangi Peninsula

Turning right at the infamous Warkworth intersection will take you to Mahurangi Pennisula and a treasure trove of safe family beaches and exceptional walking tracks. This area comprises various coastal communities and regional parks. The slower pace will help you rediscover a laid-back quintessential Kiwi holiday. Plenty of playgrounds both manufactured as well as handcrafted by nature, have unbeatable views. The beaches in this area almost seem purpose-built for paddleboarding or kayaking and for little legs to splash around.

You can safely walk along the beachfront from one end to the other at low tide. Starting at Sandspit through to Martins Bay is 8.5kms one way, so ensure that you have someone ready and waiting at the other end to pick you up. The walk is relatively easy with a few rock and stream crossings; the path is unmarked. If the entire walk sounds daunting, you can make it shorter by just starting on whichever beach you are currently on; just keep an eye on the tide.

Sandspit/Brick Bay

Brick Bay is the first secret spot you will encounter, as you mu st take the road to Sandspit to reach it. Sandspit is a bustling marina where you can jump on board a ferry and cruise over to Kawau – it also has an excellent playground for kids of all ages and plenty of green grass to run around on. There is a beachfront Holiday Park if you decide to stay in the area. However, if you venture up Brick Bay Drive, you are treated to a quiet bay with open green space perfect for picnics. Brick Bay has public toilets. The path leads you down to an epic climbing tree, with a rope swing, gentle waters and fantastic rock pools to find all sorts of treasures.

Snells Beach

Snells Beach is the area’s central hub and where you will find a little supermarket, takeaway shops, and restaurants. We suggest stocking up on essentials here, as the rest of the coast provides slim pickings. Snells Beach is a long curved beach with views out to Kawau, and kids can scooter or bike on the path that runs along the waterfront from playground to playground. There are public toilets in a few spots along the way. High tide swimming is best, but low tide reveals plenty of rock pools to explore.

Algies Bay

Algies Bay is the next family-friendly bay you will encounter. As it faces east, the sunrises are spectacular, and there is no better spot to observe than from the top of Highfield Garden Reserve. Pack a breakfast picnic and plenty of hot drinks, after seeing the day in; you can wander down and visit the donkeys in residence – don’t forget to bring them a healthy treat. Several pathways lead you down to the safe shores of Algies Bay from Highfield Reserve. The bay is best enj oyed for two hours on either side of high tide.

Scotts Landing

The entrance to Scotts Landing is just as charming as the beach; walking on the boardwalk you are greeted with a glimpse of the historic Scott Homestead. This sheltered bay looks back onto Mahurangi West. If you time it right with a low tide, you can walk to tiny Casnell Island and spend time exploring – just ensure you make it back before the tide sweeps away your escape route! Sandspit wharf is a great place to fish with kids; just be aware of where the boats are and move your lines when they come in.

Scandrett Regional Park

Arriving at Scandrett Regional Park feels like you are stepping back in time. This small sheltered bay is located 3km past Algies Bay and is worthy of a day trip. Two loop tracks take you through historical and current farmland. The Kawau Bay Track and the Mullet Point Track take approximately one hour to complete and offer stunning views back along Scandrett Bay. A couple of short tracks within the park lead to lookouts and historical sites such as a Māori pa. A short trail also connects you with the next beach over Martins Bay. If walking doesn’t sound very relaxing and you are done frolicking in the calm waters, there are the lovingly restored homestead and farm buildings that date back to the late 1800s to explore. To immerse yourself in days gone by, rent one of the Auckland Council baches available year-round – you will have to be quick though, as they are in hot demand. If you want to try and catch your supper, at low tide head to the rocks at Mullet point where you may reel in a Kingfish or Snapper.

Martins Bay

The final stop on the Mahurangi Peninsula is Martins Bay. This fl at-sheltered bay houses a dedicated water ski lane at the north end. It is also a popular place for boaties to launch their boats straight into the water and head out to Kawau. For accommodation, there is a thriving holiday park on the beach with different types of accommodation to suit everyone.

Kawau Island

Kawau Island – the jewel in the crown of the Hauraki Gulf. Cruise the beautiful bays, see historic landmarks, and observe the bird and marine life. Kawau Island is one of the largest islands in the Hauraki Gulf and is a short boat trip away from Sandspit. Even though it is short in distance, it is far enough away that the city feels like a distant memory. The crystal-clear waters provide a paradise for fishing and sailing with many sheltered anchorages for boaties.

Mansion House

Māori tribes abandoned Kawau Island in the 1880s, and the islan d then became a busy mining settlement. Sir George Grey purchased the island in 1862 and extended the former mine manager’s house into Mansion House. Sir George Grey was one of the first Governors of New Zealand. He introduced man y species to the island, such as five different wallabies – four of which rem ain today. Today the Kawau Island Historic Reserve makes up 10% of the island and was created to protect the stately property and sub-tropical gardens that Sir George Grey developed. The fully restored Mansion House is open to the public and houses an impressive collection of antique furnishings. The gardens surrounding the property are a perfect place to stop for a picnic, making it one of the most popular spots on the island to visit. There is a café on-site and electric BBQ facilities available. You may even meet the two male in-house peacocks that wander the grounds, Solo and Two-Toes. There is a strict “pack-it-in, pack-it-out” policy as there is no rubbish collection on the island, so take everything you bring to the island back to the mainland with you.

40
Photo: Mansion House

How to get there

Kawau is only accessible by water, so if you do not own a water vessel, you must catch a water taxi or ferry to get there. Leaving from Sandspit, you can catch a comfortable ferry up to five times a day – please confirm times on the website. One of the best ways to see all Kawau has to offer is to complete the Royal Mail Run. It is the largest mail run by water in the Southern Hemisphere. This trip invites you to sit back and relax ass your experienced and informative skipper guides you around over 75 wharfs delivering freight and mail to the island residents – don’t forget to keep an eye out for penguins and dolphins!

41

Walking tracks and water activities

There are minimal roads on the island, so if you don’t have a boat to get to where you want to go, you will need to take one of the many walking tracks. Many of the most popular tracks start from Mansion House Bay; they range in length from 10mins through to a 2.5-hour round trip to the historic Coppermine. This stunning walk will escort you through native bush and past remote beaches to the remains of the old engine house.

The water activities are endless on Kawau. With its myriad of small sheltered coves, there is ample opportunity to find a secluded bay and paddleboar d to shore. Or drop a line over the side and try your luck at catching a snapper for dinner.

Where to stay

If you are planning on staying on Kawau, we suggest renting one of the many holiday homes that are available to rent. For large groups, there is the option of renting Camp Bentzon, located at North Cove. This accommodation sleeps up to 120 people and, during the week, is utilised by school camps but is often available for weekend hire. There are no supermarkets on the island, so ensure you stock up on groceries from the mainland before venturing. There are only three options for dining out on Kawau Island, and we highly recommend checking opening hours as they can vary depending on the season.

Matakana, Omaha + Tawharanui

Ahhh, the Matakana coast. Miles of untouched coastlines, boutique shops and wineries, galleries, the famous Farmers’ Market and beautiful white sandy beaches. It is no wonder the area is popular for all ages and one of the country’s best holiday spots. This area is where you are spoilt for choice; come for a day or stay for a week. You will never be bored in the ever-changing scene.

Matakana

Matakana Village has always been a bustling hotspot. In the mid-1800s, it was known for timber milling and shipbuilding utilising the Matakana River. In the following years, agriculture and dairy farming grew as this thriving rural town became a community. The old timber yard is now the location for the famous Saturday Farmers’ Markets and village shops. Spring is a fantastic time to explore this area as the cherry trees show off with their stunning cascading blossoms.

Omaha

With a 3km arc of perfect white quartz sand, crystal clear waters, rolling waves and uninterrupted views, it is no wonder that Omaha is one of the country’s most popular beaches. Located just ten minutes past Matakana, there is ample time to take a beach stroll on a day’s adventure. Lifeguards patrol during the summer months only. It is a perfect location for surfers, kitesurfers, windsurfers, or to learn how to boogie board. The beach’s northern end is home to endangered Dotterel and Fairy Terns. This area is roped off to protect them, so please ensure that dogs and children do not bound through and disturb the nests.

If the main stretch is busy, and you time it right with the tide, you can clamber over the rocks at the beach’s southern end, which is also a great spot to cast a line, and you will find yourself at a magical bay called ‘Pink Beach’. It is only 200m long and gets its name from the millions of pink wheel shells that have been crushed by waves and storms, resulting in flecks of red mixing with the white sand.

Tawharanui

Winding down a gravel road to the Tawharanui Peninsula is like entering paradise. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted by the shingled shore of Jones Bay, and you know you are witnessing magic. The 588-hectare park boasts beautiful white sandy beaches, rolling farmlands, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands. Tawharanui is the first integrated public open sanctuary where farming and conservation thrive behind a predator-proof fence – to protect the wildlife; please leave your dogs at home. The gate is automatic, but it also locks for the night. Make sure you check times as you drive on in.

Once through the gates, there are four beaches to choose from; the main beach is Anchor Bay and is a leisurely stroll from the main car park. Once there, you can wander the 360m white sand and pick the perfect position to relax. Tawharanui is also popular for surfers, and as it is a marine reserve, snorkelling reveals another world beneath the waves. Keep an eye out for the stingrays and eagle rays that glide across the bottom!

Sip, savour & shop

The Tuscan-inspired countryside, combined with incredible soil, produces a wide variety of wines to sip. Those who prefer a hopp-ier beverage, there are also plenty of local craft beers to enjoy. While there are plenty of places to indulge the palette, better yet, have someone else take the wheel and book a tour! If you prefer to self-guide, it pays to check the individual vineyards are open, as some are open by appointment only.

If you plan to explore further than Matakana, it is a good idea to stock up, as the small supermarket here is one of the last ones on the coast. The Saturday Farmers’ Market is a great place to experience the local produce, we recommend you go with an empty belly and basket - both are going to be full by the end of the day!

In Omaha there is a small superette and a café in the block of shops near the Surf Club. You can also forage amongst the roadside stalls that dot each side of Omaha Flats Road and pick up perfect in-season fruit and vegetables. These crops are grown in the superb soil that this area boasts, and you can be sure you are eating something harvested not very long ago.

48
Photo: Tramcar Matakana - by Dominey Flores

Family friendly activities

The Matakana Cycle Trail takes you through farmland and bush. It provides plenty of places to stop and admire the view – and as it leads through wineries, you may even get the chance to top up the cellar! The trail starts at the Village and is a two-way track suitable for the entire family. It is open to runners, walkers or cyclists – bikes can be hired from Matakana Country Park. The gravel and boardwalk trail links Matakana to Omaha and has a separate detour to Point Wells.

If Tawharanui is too boisterous for wee ones, there are many options for sheltered family-friendly beaches on the way out. Baddleys Beach has toilets and changing rooms. Campbells Bay has a playground at the water’s edge. Just be warned if you go at low tide, be prepared to walk out to the water as it goes out goes out a long way! There are no shops on this part of the coast so ensure the picnic is packed before heading out.

Challenge yourself to walk up the Quarry Loop. Located at the southern end of Omaha Bseach, there are 130 steps to the top, where you are rewarded with breathtaking views across Omaha Bay and beyond.

Tawharanui provides seven signposted walks starting from either Anchor Bay or the Lagoon and range from easy for little legs to tracks suited to the more energetic; the Infomation Site located near Anchor Bay has all the details . A firm favourite for people of all ages is the Ecology track which begins from Anchor Bay and is a loop walk that can take between 40mins to an hour. It will lead you through ancient native bush and reveal stunning sea views over the bustling marine reserveBottlenose Dolphins are also fans of this area and are frequently spotted playing and surfing in the waves.

Walk Stay

There is no campground at Omaha, however, many properties are holiday homes and are available to rent as well as around the corner in Point Wells.

Tawharanui campgrounds are located 150ms from Anchor Bay; as they get incredibly busy during the summer months, be prepared to book early to avoid disappointment and drift off to the waves crashing on the beach. If you feel up to it, you can also wander through Waterfall Gully and witness a display of the local glow worms. If you keep extremely quiet, you may also see a Kiwi.

Whangateau

On the way to Leigh, you will pass through Whangateau, which is home to one of the more picturesque sports fields in the country. There is a Holiday Park on the waterfront, and they offer a range of accommodation options. The estuary, combined with a playground and wide-open spaces, makes it a wonderfully simple family getaway spot.

Mathesons Bay

Mathesons Bay is the small cove you will find just before Leigh. It is home to a large playground next to the water, plenty of rock pools to discover and a raft anchored just offshore - the perfect place for a family day out.

Goat Island

Just out of Leigh and around some windy corners lies a marine reserve named after the little island that sits just 100m off the beach – Goat Island. The marine reserve was established in 1975 and is the perfect way to spend a summer’s day. This area is protected; please leave all dogs at home and do not take anything home with you - except photos and memories. Everyone playing their part means that the vast amount of marine life (in and out of the water) will remain for more people to experience.

Pakiri

Pakiri Beach offers a long 14km stretch of white sand coastline that remains predominantly untouched. The waves are popular with surfers, but due to the winding gravel road to reach them, it is seldom busy. As you enter Pakiri, ensure you pause at the top of Pakiri Hill and take in the spectacular panoramic view; on clear days, the Sky Tower is visible! There are no shops in this neck of the woods, so pack a picnic and venture out for a day of swimming, kayaking and one of Pakiri Beach’s most popular activities, horse riding!

Walks

If you have had enough of the water, why not walk the Matheson Bay Bush track? This relatively easy track links back up to Leigh Road via established native bush and has up-close views of the Kohuroa Stream Waterfalls. The walkway is relatively easy with boardwalk parts; it is not stroller friendly, however, due to several stairs. Once you arrive at the road, you can either turn around or stroll down Matheson Bay Road back to the beach.

The Leigh Harbour Walkway is a one-hour return walk from Leigh Boat Ramp that makes its way towards Cape Rodney. The Leigh Wharf is a working harbour, so if you time it right, you may see a commercial boat unloading its catch! The walk will show you through native bush, along the rocky ridges of the harbour and finish at Cape Rodney Road.

The Leigh Coastal path is a fantastic walk along the stunning pohutukawa fringed coastline. It offers plenty of photo opportunities with views over Omaha, Tawharanui, Goat Island and Little Barrier – on exceptionally clear days, you can see the Coromandel Peninsula. This one-hour trip has paved, gravel, boardwalk, and grass sections, with seats along the way to stop and refuel. The walk starts at Lax Crescent and finishes at Cotterell Street.

The Goat Island Coastal Walk begins at the Auckland University Marine Laboratory; depending on which route you choose is approximately an hour each way. This walk takes you along the rugged coastline to Tabletop Reef, where the views across to Hen and Chicks Islands, Pakiri and the Hauraki Gulf are phenomenal. In the end, you can turn around or take the Farm Loop back to the start.

Photo: Mathesons Bay - by Gavin Smith

The beauty of Goat Island is that you do not have to snorkel very far into the water to see marine life in numbers not seen anywhere else on the coast - making it perfect for marine lovers of all ages! Bring your snorkels or hire what you need from one of the many places around. If you are a certified diver, there is also scuba equipment for hire and a guided scuba tour option. This tiny slice of paradise gets extremely busy during the summer, so be early to stake your spot.

If you prefer to maintain some distance between yourself and the creatures of the (not so) deep, look at booking an informative 45 minute tour aboard the Glass Bottom Boat. Or paddle yourself around in the unique option of a transparent kayak. The single or double kayak allows you to float through th e stunningly clear waters of the Goat Island Marine Reserve and witness a variety of fish such as Snapper, Red Moki, Blue Maomao, and perhaps even some Eagle Rays and Stingrays without getting wet!

If the weather refuses to play ball, why not get educated at the Goat Island Marine Discovery centre? The state-of-the-art interactive displays, touch tank and sound tunnel, are sure to make it a hit for small (and big) kids. Check out their website for opening times.

Family friendly Stay

If you cannot get enough of Pakiri beach, there is a holiday park with various accommodation two minutes away. For Leigh and Goat Island, we recommend checking out some of the many holiday houses for rent in the area.

Walks, parks, and camping

Dome Valley Summit Track

Starting from the Dome Valley Tearoom, just north of Warkworth, the Dome Valley Summit Track is a 3-hour round return trip. For the first 40 min utes, the track ascends an impressive set of stairs and passes through a native forest. When you arrive at the lookout, you are treated to views across the Mahurangi Peninsula. You have a choice here to either turn around and head back or continue up the steep and rocky track to the summit – watch where you place your feet as the track is riddled with tree roots. You will be rewarded with stunning views across the valley if you push on through. Make sure you also spend time in the small clearing of the Waiwhiu Kauri Grove. This track crosses sacred Iwi land, so walkers must remember to stay respectful and on the trail.

Atiu Creek Regional Park

If you head west from Wellsford along Tapora Peninsula, you will enter Atiu Creek Regional Park, a working farm open for the public to enjoy. The park provides ample opportunities for an active holiday thanks to the 800 hectares of unspoiled rural land overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. Several shared tracks that weave around wetlands, native bush and rolling farmlands are popular for horse riders, walkers and mountain bikers. If you are planning to explore the park by horseback, you must have a permit from Auckland Council.

If you want to extend your day trip, Courtyard House is a cottage complex that can sleep up to 23 people - this and the separate event building book up in advance, so be sure to check availability. There is also a basic campsite within the park near Solomons Bay. Self-contained vehicles are permitted to stay in the car park for one night. Horse paddocks are also available in both locations.

Wellsford

Wellsford is a small rural town that sits at the junction of State Highway 1 and 16 and was founded in the early 1860s by a group of English settlers who initially landed in Port Albert. State Highway 1 is the main street that runs through town, so unless you are a highly confident parallel parker, keep an eye out for the two main car park areas at either end of town. They are located off Station Road, behind the public toilets at the southern end. They are on the left-hand side at the northern end, just after the Gull Station. If you feel lucky while in this part of town, pop into Woodys Winners, which is widely known as one of the luckiest Lotto shops in the country. Wellsford Market Day is the first Saturday of every month at the OWL Community Hub.

Te Hana

Te Hana is just 5 minutes drive north of Wellsford. It is home to Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre, which transports visitors back 300 years to the time of Princess Te Hana, and has a range of tours available.

Kaiwaka

Kaiwaka is the first small settlement you discover when you cross over to Northland. It is charmingly known as the ‘Little Town of Lights’ due to the local businesses along the main street adorning their buildings with lights. It has a range of food options to explore.

Mangawhai

Magical Mangawhai has it all. You have a surf beach on one side and on the other a safe harbour. There is a village filled with beautiful local produce, and linking the two is a picturesque causeway surrounded by native wetlands and bush. This once sleepy surf community nestled between rolling green farmland and the Pacific Ocean is now a hot spot when travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Highway.

This is the home of an endangered Fairy Tern shorebird that breeds at both the Mangawhai and Waipu Estuaries each year, with only two other breeding places in New Zealand. DOC led the efforts to help the birds survive, supported by active community volunteers from Waipu About Terns and Mangawhai Fairy Tern Society. The presence and survival of these birds is another reason to be weary of where dogs are and aren’t allowed on beaches and estuary areas.

Mangawhai Heads

Mangawhai Heads is patrolled by a local surf-life-saving team over the summer and is a popular family-friendly beach for swimmers and surfers alike. Take the boogie board even if you don’t plan on getting in the water, as the giant dunes further down the beach are epic to ride down! A summer’s day at Mangawhai is hard to beat, so even though the car park looks large, we advise you get there early as it fills up quickly!

Mangawhai Harbour

Mangawhai Harbour provides a sanctuary for families as the calm waters of the lagoon-style harbour are safe for little ones to splash around in. It also offers picture-perfect water conditions for those wanting to kayak or paddleboard.

Te Arai Regional Park

The immaculate Te Arai Beach stretches 10km north to the mouth of Mangawhai. When the swell runs from the North East, Te Arai has a great beach break that makes perfect surfing conditions. If you are keen to learn while adventuring in Te Arai – there are a couple of great surf schools in the area that will have you up in no time! If the waves prove too much for little nippers, there is an old quarry hole just down from the car park, which provides fantastic sheltered swimming.

96

Walks

The most famous and beautiful walk in this area is the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway; the 5km return track takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete. The route starts from the Mangawhai Surf Life Saving Club and takes about 20 minutes north on the beach before turning inland. From there, you will make your way up and along the elevated ridgeline taking in the breathtaking views. At the end of the track, you can either walk along the beach back to the surf club or back along the clifftops. If you want to return via the beach, you only have a limited timeframe – check if there is water surging through the gap of the massive archway rock; if there is, you have misjudged the tide and must go back via the cliffs.

If you have a spare 4-5 hours up your sleeve, why not loop the three Tanekaha walking tracks together to take in all Mangawhai has to offer? You can do them individually if time (or fitness) isn’t on your side. You access the trails from King Road, just before Mangawhai Heads. Once you reach the swing bridge, you can go two ways: the Tanekaha Forest Track or the Tanehaka Falls Track. The Forest Track provides stunning views back across Mangawhai, where the Falls Track will take you past three extremely spectacular waterfalls. If you are combining all tracks, it is just a matter of deciding which to do first.

The Te Arai Point Loop Track is an amazing two-hour loop track providing spectacular views out across the coast. Beginning at the car park at the end of Te Arai Point Road, you will head south along the headlands to Forestry Beach.

If you are up for some adventuring, head south on Te Ari Beach, and you can make it around the point to the northern end of Pakiri Beach. On this adventure, you will encounter magical mermaid pools, exciting rock formations and secluded bays.

Family friendly

If the water or walks don’t float your boat check out the Mangaw hai Activity Zone (MAZ), located next to the golf club. It is a one-stop-shop for kid’s entertainment. The best part is an on-site café so parents can grab a cup of well-deserved coffee and watch the kids tire themselves out on the large playground or sports fields.

Events

Mangawhai has a thriving art scene; many local artists are only open by appointment. Unless you happen to be in town for the annual Mangawhai Art Trail, which is held the last weekend of February, many artists open their studios free of charge for the public to enjoy.

Mangawhai is famous for its walks; there is even an event called ‘Mangawhai Walking Weekend’, book in for 18-19 March 2023.

MAZ even has a skatepark that once a year hosts a very cool event titled the Mangawhai Bowl Jam. The Jam is one of New Zealand’s largest skateboarding events and attracts top skaters from around the country!

Shop

Mangawhai Village is the local hub where the main shops are located to stock up on essentials. There are also two sets of markets on Saturday morningsThe Mangawhai Tavern Markets and the Mangawhai School Markets. You can pick up artisan crafts, food and local produce such as chocolate, olive oil, coffee and wine at either one.

Stay

Camping isn’t permitted at Mangawhai Heads, but a great family-friendly holiday park is located on the water’s edge along the Mangawhai Harbour with both powered and unpowered sites, cabins and units to rent. There are also numerous holiday houses to rent in the Heads and the village. You will need a self-contained vehicle to stay in Te Ari. The campground is a fl at grassed and metal area nestled behind the dune - book on the Auckland Council website for a maximum of three nights.

Waipu + Langs Beach

Waipu Cove and Langs Beach make up the Waipu Coast. Two white-sand beaches located at the southern end of Northland’s Bream Bay.

Waipu Cove is the larger beach patrolled in the summer months and is known for its swimming, surfing (for both experienced and those wanting to learn) and fishing. Waipu Cove also has excellent facilities, a popular café over the road, and a wellstocked General Store.

Langs Beach is smaller and not patrolled at all. It is a quiet crescent-shaped beach lined with pohutukawa trees. These trees provide a natural playground for children and shade many visitors during the hot summer months.

Waipu Coast remains a sea lovers mecca in today’s world with pl enty of fish in the sea, and a mere 21km away from the protected sanctuaries of the Hen and Chicken Islands, the surrounding waters are perfect for diving, fishing and snorkelling. Many local fishing and diving charter companies are ready to show you this underwater world. If you are taking your boat out, there is a boat ramp near the local café at the southern end of Waipu Cove. There is also a spot at the southern end of Langs Beach where you can launch your boat if you have a tractor or a 4WD vehicle.

Fishing Events

Waipu is the proud host of the longest-running Highland Games in the Southern Hemisphere, honouring their past. Held on 1 January, this event attracts thousands of visitors from far and wide. Besides a lot of tartan, it provides a jampacked program of entertainment and friendly rivalry. It provides fun for the whole family and is a unique way to ring in the new year.

If you are otherwise occupied on New Year’s Day and still wish to celebrate Waipu’s Scottish heritage, you can look forward to ‘Winter in Waipu’. 1 July is International Tartan Day, and the town celebrates by becoming a sea of tartan. The festivities continue throughout the month with many tartan themed events.

Family friendly activities

Located around a 30 minute drive from Waipu Cove, is the best free glow worm experience the country has to offer. The caves consist of large limestone formations, an underground lake and glow worms. Remember to take your torch and be prepared to get your feet wet, but all in all, the caves are an excellent outing for the whole family.

In the middle of town is the local award-winning Waipu Museum. It has earned an international reputation for telling the area’s story through innovative modern exhibits. The museum also runs a fascinating Heritage Trail, making it a must for history fanatics. The trail will take you back to the early settlement of Waipu, visiting buildings and landmarks along the way.

Head to the North end of Langs Beach at low tide and walk over the rocks to Ding Bay (named after many dinged surfboards). There are rock pools to explore or even just rest under a pohutukawa against the unique, layered rocks. Just remember to keep an eye on the tide!

Stay

There is a local campground a short stroll over the dunes from Waipu Cove. It provides various accommodation options, plenty of facilities, and free BBQs for those lucky enough to catch their dinner. Waipu Cove also has free camping facilities for self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles – for a maximum of one night.

WAIPU + LANGS

The Waipu Cave Track is a 2km walk which leads you through a picturesque karst limestone landscape across farmland and regenerating bush. It fi nishes up on the ridgeline with views across the coast up to the northern point of Bream Head.

The most popular walkway is the Waipu Coastal Walkway which runs from Waipu Cove to Langs Beach - allowing stunning panoramic views across Hen and Chicken Islands. The Langs Beach end of the 3km track is suitable for all abilities, but as you get closer to Waipu Cove, some obstacles, such as ladders, rocks, and steps, will need to be navigated.

Piroa Falls are a 20 minute drive inland from Waipu Town Centre. A short bushwalk leads you through the gorges and over the Ahuroa River; at the waterfall, you can walk up the smooth rocks on the far side before swimming in the cool freshwater pool. If the water falls softly, you can swim under a small ledge behind the veil of water.

Langfield Track is a 6.5km (one-way) track from Cove Road, just south of Langs Beach. The trail takes you along an undulating ridgeline and regenerating bush. Once you arrive at the track, you will be entranced by the amazing views over Langs Beach, out to the surrounding islands and inland to the Brynderwyn Range. If you don’t feel like walking back, organise to be picked up at Cullen Road.

Walks Shop

Waipu Town Centre services both beaches and is just a 10 minute drive away. It has a great selection of cafés and boutiques, including The Boutique Markets, held every second Sunday of the month inside the Coronation Hall.

David operates primarily around the stretch of coast from Gulf Harbour to Leigh. Living on the Mahurangi coast at Snells Beach, he has many listings around the Mahurangi, Kawau Bay, and the Sandspit and Gulf Harbour Marinas.

He would love to list your boat if you are ready to sell, or simply provide sound advice if you are thinking of doing so.

David is able to give you good, sensible information about market conditions, and preparing your boat for the best possible sales outcome. This extends to valuations, insurance and maintenance.

As an experienced marine broker with Gulf Group Marine Brokers, he has the knowledge and power of the nationwide brokerage behind him. Historically, Gulf Group have been very important in the New Zealand broking scene. This means David has access to the group’s depth of knowledge about New Zealand’s fleet of launches and sailing boats, and the many buyers its brokers have on their books.

David is patient, and understands the intricacies and the pitfalls of selling secondhand boats. He is known for working for his sellers (and not just the sale), and also looking after all his clients to get results. He has a proven sales record.

Health authorities advise tanks be cleaned biennially. The sludge at the bottom of your tank increases and decomposes over time and can contain harmful bacteria and debris. Mobi-Kair pump the dirty water out of your tank, waterblast the wall and vacuum sediment/sludge off the floor. They can then organise a fresh load of water to go back into your tank.
