KAWAU'S HIDDEN TREASURE: AND BON ACCORD BAR & BISTRO WORDS
The wonderful old boathouse on Kawau Island has been revamped and is once again bringing the local community together, with a shared love of boating and great food. The original Kawau Island Yacht Club was built in 1952 in the Bon Accord Harbour by island residents, using donated materials. The land was leased at a very generous rate from the Lidgard family, who were well-known local boat builders and sailors (their grandchildren still are to this day). The club became a favourite gathering place for boaties cruising the gulf, and a de facto community centre for people based on the island or nearby. In 1982 management was passed to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), the country’s oldest and largest yachting association. The RNZYS officially incorporated the club, rebuilding the aging wharf and the fuel tanks. The club continued for another 32 years before declining membership numbers and a few

too many quiet winters forced the RNZYS to reluctantly close the doors in 2014. But the story doesn’t end there. A small group of supporters formed a committee to start a total refurbishment of the site, with support from OPAK (Organisations Passionate About Kawau), the Rodney Local Board and, once again, a whole heap of volunteers. By Christmas 2014 they reopened under a new name: Kawau Boating Club. They believed the new title would be more welcoming to all sailors, not just yachties, and they were proven right by an immediate surge in membership numbers. After dwindling below 400, there are now more than 800 member families, some from as far away as America and the Bahamas. Robyn and Davo Lee are now on their fourth season running the Bon Accord Bar & Bistro at Kawau Boat Club. “Two years ago, we built the Bon Accord Bar
out of bits and pieces we had salvaged from the building site,” Robyn recalls. “With the new deck right on the water, and pop up bar with a real kiwiana style, we reckon it is one of the best spots in the whole of New Zealand. And just around the corner from the club the RNZYS put in a great kids’ playground.” “We’re now open seven days a week for breakfast lunch and dinner - our fresh morning scones and our Kawau burgers are legendary already. We also provide diesel, petrol, two-stroke oil, fresh water ice, bait and a heap of general store items.” With all of the improvements, the club has a new lease on life: most summer weekends it’s busy with fishing competitions, regatta prize givings and other special events. The New Year’s Day regatta, always a major feature on the Kawau boating calendar, now attracts even more families, and the Anzac Day ceremony brings everyone back in the autumn.

It’s easy to see why membership numbers have boomed: members get free access to showers, laundry, water top ups at the jetty, discounted fuel and cheaper bar drinks. The permanent population of Kawau Island is growing again, and the club is once more a meeting place for locals and anyone who enjoys boating, sailing and fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. “You don’t even need a boat to enjoy Kawau,” says Robyn. “It’s easy to catch one of the regular ferries or water taxis from Sandspit, Snells Beach or Omaha. And you don’t have to be a member to come to the restaurant - everyone is welcome.” With the recent run of good sailing weather, now’s a perfect time of year to make the short trip over. “When the flag’s up that means we’re open,” Robyn laughs. “It’s a boatie thing!” www.facebook.com/KawauIslandBoatingClub www.kawauboatingclub.nz

Looking down at his right leg, Hamish Dobbyn could see his foot pointing back in the wrong direction. While taking a corner at 70km an hour, his toe had got caught in a tyre-barrier and every ligament in his knee was twisted out of place.
at that top level. And you’re being made to stop something you didn’t want to stop,” says Hamish.
This was the start of a series of injuries that devastated Hamish’s ten-year motocross career. With seven titles in New Zealand and Australia, plus a third-place finish at the FIM Junior World Championship, the Warkworth-born racer was travelling the globe as part of the KTM Red Bull Team. But after four knee reconstructions, he had to face the facts.
“My brother and I hounded dad for a bike, and when I finally got one there was no going back,” says Hamish.
“It was gutting. Working so hard, for so many years, to build up towards this goal. You’re finally
The journey started at Warkworth Motorcycles, where ten-year-old Hamish would go with his older brother after school to look at bikes.
“I started racing in local events when I was ten. I was one of the slowest guys on the track to start with, but I worked my way to the front, and when I was fourteen I started racing internationally.” “I get my competitiveness from my mother. I’ve always been motivated by wanting to improve, wanting to win - setting new goals for myself and

reaching them one by one.” After the devastating injuries, Hamish went travelling for a while, before he came back to work for Dobbyn Builders, the Warkworth family business. Hamish’s uncle landed them a project at Port Albert General Store - famous for their fish and chips - where owners Grace and Dave Pratt talked about their passion for racing and how they owned a speedway car. “They joked around, saying it was time for me to transition from two wheels to four. Eight months ago, that joke became reality when Dave called up and said they needed a new driver, if I wanted to have a go,” Hamish says. “I had my first test drive and did really well,

but on my second drive I crashed the car and completely wrote it off. So I was surprised that Grace and Dave let me carry on!”
The days of motorsport being a men’s only sport is over, and we often have a couple of female riders up at the front in both motocross and speedway.”
Since the car had to be re-built, the Port Albert team went into the season with hardly any practise. Hamish was thrown in at the deep end.
“Physical strength isn’t that important in speedway, but good cardio is key, to keep your heart rate down and stay calm. If you get tired and flustered, you can make bad decisions. Everything happens so fast at this speed - a split second can make a difference between a crash or a miss.”
“People compete for years before they get into the midget cars, which have a top speed of 140km per hour and the same power-to-weight ratio as a Formula 1 car,” he explains. Western Springs International Series is the biggest speedway event for New Zealand and Australia combined, drawing crowds of up to 30,000 people. “It’s great to see lots of families in the audience.
Despite being on his own on the track, Hamish sees motorsport as a team effort. “People think it’s an individual sport, but I’m just one part of a team of great people, mechanics and sponsors - like my dad who’s my biggest supporter and has never missed a race.”
His partner of seven years, Heather Price, organises everything behind the scenes. “Whoever is the best prepared off the track has the best chance to win. Heather is in control of all the bits and pieces you don’t think of. I’ve got the easiest part of the job, just racing.” Grace and David’s gamble on Hamish has paid off: After two competition rounds, the Port Albert General Store team has placed in both feature races, which was their goal for the year. “My three-year-goal is to win an international feature race at Western Springs,” says Hamish. With a team and family this passionate behind him, he has a good shot.

YOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS WORDS
The ocean is a big place – approximately 93% of New Zealand’s territory is ocean – and one father and daughter team have made it their mission to inspire a new generation of aquatic adventurers. Steve and Riley Hathaway, from Snells Beach, started Young Ocean Explorers in 2012 to tell a story. “I think the ocean is New Zealand’s great untold story,” says Steve. “Something like 80% of New Zealand’s native species live in the water. It’s even more beautiful and amazing than our land – and everyone knows how beautiful our land is.” The idea for Young Ocean Explorers came after Riley got her Dad’s help on a school project. “I decided to make a video about turtles eating plastic for my year eight ‘Wai Care’ school project and got Dad to help me”, says Riley. “We showed the video to my brother’s year six class and when Dad saw their reaction - he had a lightbulb

moment and realised that we could do more inspiring stories.”
a treasure trove of educational videos, quizzes, maps and polls.
In 2014 the pair produced a 10-episode TV series which screened on What Now, New Zealand’s most popular kids show. It was so popular they filmed a second series the following year. In late 2015 they released a book and DVD package, donating 2,560 copies, one to every school in New Zealand and the Cook Islands.
“From the outside, the ocean can seem like a very intimidating place,” says Steve. “We see Young Ocean Explorers as an inviting gateway that makes it less intimidating, by telling great stories.”
“In the 60s and 70s we had Jacques Cousteau, who brought the ocean alive for a generation through his exploration,” says Steve. “We’re trying to do the same for this generation of kids, so they’re inspired to explore it for themselves. We also want to give them the tools to look after the ocean – they’re native environmentalists and they get how important it is.”
“We’ve just been over to California, filming some iconic species over there,” says Steve. “We were filming a beautiful orange fish called the Garibaldi - it’s really interesting how similar it is to our local Black Angel Fish. They sort of ‘mow the lawn’ and clear the algae off a rock for the female to lay its eggs on, then the male will hang around and protect the eggs until they hatch. He has his job cut out for him, because eggs in the ocean are like KFC, they don’t last long if he loses concentration!”
One of the tools is a new interactive website – www.youngoceanexplorers.com – which hosts

“We’ve had so many amazing opportunities,” says Riley. “My stand out favourite places are Heron Island in the Great Barrier Reef and the Kermadec Islands. Being able to swim with more than a dozen sharks is definitely my favourite memory.” Even though she’s only 16, Riley sets an example for us all to follow. “It’s so important to inspire kids to love our ocean, because when they fall in love with it they’ll end up trying to protect it and that’s exactly what we need,” she says. www.youngoceanexplorers.com

TINY TRAVELLER WORDS
There is so much to see in this beautiful area of Northlands. I booked a months stay in rural Mangawhai with my toddler and I left wishing for more time. Hit the beach: The surf beach at Mangawhai Heads is majestic. You will be dwarfed by the cliffs and the great expanse of beach and awestruck by the beauty - a great place for the kids to run wild and free. The beauty of the heads is that if the wind is up on one side, it will be protected on the other and each side is uniquely stunning. Picnic Bay is great for little ones, with a calm graduated 'beach' with lovely clear water. Check out the playgrounds: The MAZ (Mangawhai Activity Zone) on Molesworth Drive is one of the most impressive playgrounds in the country. There is something for everyone here, including a skatepark and flying fox. The playground at

produce for the adults to peruse, from local wine to delicious smoked salmon and cheeses.
Hit the shops for an easy lunch: Mangawhai Heads township has many family friendly lunch options and the kids will love the atmosphere amongst the seagulls (just don't leave the table unattended). Enjoy some sushi, bakery treats, or splash out on some curly fries with camembert wedges and cranberry dipping sauce at Dizzy Lizzy's.
For families with older kids, head north and discover Waipu's award-winning museum and see the glow worms while you explore the stalagmites at the Waipu caves (torches and gumboots recommended).
Saturday Markets: The market atmosphere is always a hit with the kids and the weekly market held at the Mangawhai Library Hall on Moir Street is the best place to pick up your fruit and vegetables and stock up the picnic basket. The kids will love the handmade wooden toys and the beautiful handmade and upcycled girls' clothes while you enjoy a tasty lunch. The market is open between 9am and 1pm and there is plenty of local
Dine out on delicious fare: Enjoy the chic atmosphere at Ivy or treat yourself to flawless service and consistently excellent food at The Dune. TALKING THE WALK TAWHARANUI ECOLOGY TRAIL Time: 2 hours (or 1 hour for the very fit) Distance: 3.8km There is one easy walking choice for me if I have a friend visiting from out of town, and that is the Ecology Trail at Tawharanui. It encapsulates all that is beautiful and special about our coast and the birdsong is a joy. Nearly everyone can manage it and the views of the outer Hauraki Gulf are spectacular. If you need an easier walk, try the bush trail at Parry Kauri Park, or, if you are more of a hiker, the Dome Valley carpark to Govan Wilson Road trail is a challenging but beautiful 14km day trip. We are spoilt for choice in our region so check the Auckland Council and Department of Conservation websites for more wonderful options or for organised trips visit www.warkworthwalks.co.nz
MATAKANA BIKE TRAILS Time: About 1 hour Distance: 14km This ride has been established by the Matakana Cycle Trail Trust and takes you from Matakana to Omaha and Point Wells. The ride is recommended for more confident cyclists as it includes sections on gravel roads. It includes a mix of off-road shared paths, cycle lanes and quiet roads with 50km–70km hour speed limit. Caution is required if crossing Matakana bridge from the township which is shared with traffic. For younger family members, the trail to Jones Road from Omaha including Point Wells is completely flat. Matakana Bikes is located at the Matakana Country Park. Since 2010 they offer full workshops, bike hire and stock a wide range of cycling accessories, from tyres to helmets. Owner Paull is a Shimano approved mechanic. www.matakanabicyclehire.co.nz

MANGAWHAI WALKING TRAILS Time: 2-3hrs Distance: 5kms Cliff Top Walk 2-3 hours or 3 hours either side of low tide to complete the loop. Mangawhai is located on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway just 80 minutes drive from Auckland CBD. Turn to the right off SH1 at Wayby Valley Road, just where the speed limit changes from 80 to 100kph and follow the signs to Mangawhai. From Whangarei it is 50 minutes south. Turn off SH1 at Waipu. You can park at the Mangawhai Surf Life Saving Club car park. The track is signposted from there. The loop can be walked in either direction with many locals preferring to walk the beach first as the views can be better with the sun behind you. TAWHARANUI BIKE TRAIL Distance: 5.0 km Time: 45 minutes Set on a remote peninsula, TÄ wharanui Regional Park boasts some of the Auckland regions most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands. TÄ wharanui is New Zealand's first open sanctuary integrating conservation, recreation and farming. This multi-use walking and mountain biking track starts at Anchor Bay and heads for the western end of the park. The track passes through the pest proof fence for unique views of the coastline, nearby islands and the park itself. Walkers return via the golden sand beach for which Tawharanui is famous. Mountain bikers return via the park vehicle track. Follow the blue marker post. Please note there is no pushchair or wheelchair access.

LEIGH CENTRAL
The old Leigh Hotel is looking pretty fabulous these days. Leigh Central (as it is now known) celebrated the completion of their Function Centre in December with the very special wedding of owners Jasmin and Alan Macdonald’s son Sam to his sweetheart Chrissy. Family and friends from all over New Zealand celebrated in the Seaview Room, with its panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf. The Macdonalds, with their friends and business partners Heather and Ian Johnson-Lee, arrived from Wellington early in 2016 and have been working non-stop to transform the once derelict fisherman’s pub into a facility which now includes: five Coastels (vintage bach style motels), the Function Centre with the Courtyard Lounge (for 50 people), the Seaview Room and Deck (for 150
people) and a Motorhome Park for self-contained vehicles.

“With this facility we can host mid-week corporate events, particularly in the winter season. Being just one hour from Auckland we can provide a terrific ‘away from the office’ experience, with our function rooms, accommodation and heaps to do right on our doorstep,” says Alan. SMOKING PERMITTED – BLUES BBQ & BAR WORDS
If you like the sound of beef short rib, oak-smoked and slow cooked for 10 hours, or smoked chicken, crumbed and fried, then you need to get yourself along to Blues BBQ & Bar in Warkworth. Other specialities from the south of the USA include smoked and slow-cooked brisket which can be found in a customer favourite, the Tipsy Texan sandwich. Host Adam Kewenig tells me, “People have said that they didn’t know what they were going to get but it’s the best sandwich they’ve ever had.” Adam grew up in Illinois but went to school in Mississippi and started working in a barbecue restaurant there. While Adam brings the authentic USA persona to the restaurant, it is partner and chef, Lisa Bates, who brings the cooking talent. Lisa trained as a chef in New Zealand and took her skills to the Caribbean to work on superyachts,

which is where she met Adam. She then worked for five years as a private chef for a gentleman in Miami. She has also worked as a chef at a hunting and fishing lodge in Taupo and, more recently, Little & Local café in Snells Beach. Lisa somehow also found time to finish a business degree before launching into Blues BBQ & Bar. Blues offers a selection of barbecue dishes and flavours from the south of the USA. Says Adam, “Every region has its own spin on what barbecue is – the brisket might be more Texan but the pulled pork is more of a South Carolina dish.” Lisa’s family have a holiday home in Algies Bay so she had been coming up here on holidays from her childhood. When Adam and Lisa came back to visit Algies, Adam fell in love with the area. “I was surprised when I first came here that there was no genuine barbecue place. All the good places in the
States tend to be mom and pop places so we are trying to replicate that.” They are aiming for casual dining, relaxed and family-friendly. “People can come in, order a takeaway and a beer, and by the time they have finished the beer, the food is ready,” says Adam. Adam and Lisa have been delighted by the reaction from diners in their first few weeks and surprised at how busy they have been. They have also been pleasantly surprised by the willingness of diners to try new things like the oak-smoked beef brisket. Adam relates a customer reaction; “Yeah, I just ordered this, and I wasn’t sure what brisket was, but it’s my new favourite thing.” It’s fun, it’s delicious and it’s great value for money, so make sure ya’all take up smoking real soon. www.bluesbbq.co.nz

The Mangawhai Tavern has been wetting the whistles of punters since 1865 when it was established as the watering hole for Kauri bushman and port workers.
original Kauri timber flooring can still be found in places.
Located across the road from its current site on Moir Road, it subsequently burnt down three times before it was re-built in 1895 where it stands today. Since then it has undergone extensions and renovations, including the latest and most extensive revamp in 25 years.
The renovations were complete in time for summer, over which, the new-look Mangawhai Tavern boasts an impressive line-up.
“Our free events have a real family atmosphere,” says Poni, adding that a new menu has been released. “We have a fantastic local community who want to support us and do support us.”
Elemeno P, the Jordan Luck Band, Katchafire, The Black Seeds and The Feelers, are just some of the gigs, as well as local bands and singers.
However, it’s not just the locals flocking to the tavern. In fact, long gone are the days where you’d only find local workmen occupying the bar stools.
While in the past, the major concerts have taken place on the outdoor stage at the back of the venue, the tavern is now sometimes included as a VIP space. Another change is the addition of coffee and Red Bull stands while food trucks in the car park add a festival feel. Buses deliver revellers home around the Mangawhai area, as far
“More Aucklanders are coming here to enjoy the area and still feel that there’s something here that’s modern and exciting, yet still a bit rustic. Also, people are coming down from Whangarei realising they don’t have to go to Auckland to have a good time.”
“We’ve updated everything and future-proofed it, making it possible for the venue to continue for the next 20-30 years without renovations” says Mangawhai Tavern general manager Poni Sula. Poni says as much as possible has been salvaged – ‘Everything we could save, we did save’ – and, although there is now a new Rimu bar top, the

The “concrete bunker” is stunning. A fusion of concrete and wood with a decidedly South East Asian flavour, the building’s clever design makes the most of the breath-taking views from every room, opening out onto lush lawns, mass plantings and the enclosed courtyard pool.
A large Buddha welcomes visitors to the property. Carved from a single piece of stone, it stands beside a lily-covered lake; the perfect introduction to the gardens and house that awaits.

The glass walkway leading to the front door is lined with jasmine, renga renga lilies and exotic palms, and is a fragrant nod to Robyn and Hamish’s long history in the glasshouse industry. It’s also home to Robyn’s much-loved Madagascan jasmine stephanotis, a jungle-sized vine draped in large avocado-sized seed pods and heavily scented flowers. Robyn’s favourite spot to entertain is poolside, surrounded by a tropical spread of giant taro leaves, glossy Xanadu philodendrons and cycads

under the shade of the huge fronds of a decorative pink banana palm. “I wanted to feel like I was living in a resort, and create a place where we can entertain family and friends and make the most of the summer months,” said Robyn. But the Bali gardens are her sanctuary. “My gardens are therapy, on a lot of levels, and they contain my friends. I have a very personal connection to my plants – they are memorials to loved ones, and many have grown from clippings passed on from friends and family.” They are also the perfect creative outlet for Robyn, who uses her interior designer’s eye to combine an eclectic mix of native, traditional and tropical plants to create a harmonious garden that doesn’t follow any rules. “I didn’t want the garden to feel like a theme park, or get tied into any one type of planting. The gardens are constantly evolving and changing, someone might want a new home for their bromeliads, which end up finding a space alongside canna lilies and hydrangeas.” The gardens showcase the hand-crafted pieces that Robyn collects and sells from her regular trips to Bali. Giant stone pots, sculptures and other Balinese works of art line the pathways, with Robyn’s playful mix of planting offering a colourful backdrop. A traditional wooden daybed, shaded by a carved pavilion and approached by delicately engraved stepping stones, is the perfect space to while away lazy summer hours. Robyn’s most recent project has added another element of history and tradition to the property,

and is a work of art in itself. Transported to Point Wells on the back of two trucks, the old wooden stables from Hamish’s childhood farm in Whanganui have been lovingly rebuilt and repurposed for boutique accommodation. Set amidst the palm plantation, the stables have retained their original footprint and their character, with heavy barn doors and walls lined in native timbers. They have also been a great excuse for Robyn to put her hand to a new show-stopping garden design; creating another inspiring landscape for old friends and new to enjoy. 10 WAYS WE’RE SUMMER LOVIN’ AT BOX™
The summer of 2018 looks set to be a scorcher but whether you stay put for the holidays or get away to play, a house that makes friends with the sun and scenery gives that holiday feeling all year round. At Box™, we use a number of tried-and-true design strategies to achieve this: 1. An L- or U-shaped floorplan creates the perfect sheltered courtyard. 2. Full-height, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors instantly give the feeling of more spaciousness and room to breathe. 3. Even when you require a wall to be solid, maintain the connection to the sky and backdrop with high or clerestory windows beneath a tall roofline. 4. Louvres are perfect for letting in the cooling cross breeze – and today’s louvres come with firm locking mechanisms and optional security bars. 5. We favour glass balustrades around decking for an unobstructed view. 6. Wide, grandstand-style stairways provide access to the patio or pool from the upper levels of a home – and bonus – they double as casual outdoor seating! 7. At Box™, we often run the indoor ceiling across the threshold to the outdoors. With no change in material, it’s seamless and creates good cover for an alfresco area. 8. Corners of the house can be ‘peeled back’ completely using sliders and a flush sill. 9. Built-in window seats add a relaxed element that allows you to read with a view, and a breeze, or keep an eye out to check the kids aren’t getting in to too much mischief!
10.Don’t forget those utilitarian areas. Even in a corridor, slot windows maintain an important link to the outdoors.

Marketed exclusively by Di Balich of Precision Real Estate, 107 Jones Road is an exceptional private coastal sanctuary suited for either a lifestyle or business opportunity and all just a one-hour commute to Auckland’s CBD and just 5 minutes to Omaha Beach.
Located on the stunning harbour side of the Omaha estuary, the property sits on 8.7124 hectares. It is private and sheltered, north facing, flat, fertile and fully irrigated. As a bonus it features its own little sandy beach, with a consented jetty and sea wall.
Additional buildings have consent for commercial and retail use while the property also has its own water bore. A going concern is the premium cider facility on site.
Although the Matakana Coast is scattered with private coastal getaways, with the influx of people looking to settle in the area, a property like this is seldom seen on the market.
Substantial improvements include a romantic two-bedroom modernist style house full of charm, located in a gorgeous, quiet and private setting close to the water.
Price by negotiation.
“We are seeing increased numbers of people coming to the area to put down long term roots,” says Di Balich.
According to Di Balich, what is of particular interest with this property is that it is subdividable into two consented blocks.
“This kind of property rarely comes up for sale

TROPICAL PALMS AND TREES WORDS
All New Zealand Nikau are designated Rhopalostylis sapida, but ‘selections’ vary considerably. Pitt Island Nikau have proven to be the most sought-after selection across the country. Pitt Island is the southernmost Chatham Island, 12 km south of the rest of the group, with about thirty inhabitants. Pitt Island Nikau are notably hardier than most mainland selections with thicker trunks and are wind tolerant. The leaf, frond and overall shape is superior to other Nikau. They grow faster and more vigorously and the seed is bigger. Selections from locations such as Banks Peninsula, Punakaiki and the Hauraki Gulf Islands range in quality. Some of the Gulf Island Nikau, especially Great Barrier, have been susceptible to a brown foliage rust. Waitakere Nikau tend to be poorer examples of the species. Most mainland

selections seem to be more accustomed to sheltered, fertile valleys, rather than to poorer soils. Because of cross-pollinated by bees Pitt Island Nikau are only guaranteed pure if the seed is sourced direct from the island, and not from those grown elsewhere. They are extraordinary native plants which offer much visual pleasure in plantings. Five different trees you may also want to consider: • Maire Tawhake (Swamp Maire) Syzygium maire—an upright tree, maroon and green hues, not confined to swamp, but does need more water than some species. Red Berries. (around five metres in street situations) • Coastal Maire (Nestegis apetala)—great northern coastal tree, hardy, like Pohutukawa copes with poor soil, wind and drought. Attractive foliage,
new growth a different colour, small red berries. (five metres) • Ewekuri (Streblus banksii)—Gorgeous small-leaf tree with willowy lateral or drooping foliage, striking grey bark and small yellow berries. (four metres) • Oro Oro (Nestegis montana) endemic at coastal levels also. Long fine leaves, bushy foliage, strong growth, pale grey bark, hardy and small red berries. (six metres) • Rata (Metrosideros robusta) smaller foliage, strong but much slower growth than Pohutukawa, similar and later to blossom than Pohutukawa. LIVING
LIVING LOCAL
KEEPING ACTIVE IN SUMMER It’s no secret that we all tend to over indulge and have more than our fair share of bubbles and treats over the festive season so here are a few quick tips to keep you on track (or maybe get you back on track) this summer! Get moving first thing in the morning - we always seem to find an excuse to not exercise by the end of the day so make it your goal to get it out of the way first thing whether it’s a walk around the block, a gym class or maybe a quick workout at home. Get outdoors – summer is for enjoying the sunshine so get active by heading to the beach for a brisk walk, an ocean swim, chasing the waves with the kids or throwing a ball around with them. Try something new – working out can be a drag so try something new like standup paddle boarding or exploring some of the amazing walks the area has to offer. Get a friend involved – everything is always more fun with friends, so give them a call and organise something active, that way you get to catch up and you’re more likely to actually do it knowing you’re meeting someone. Water, water and more water. You’ve heard it before but I’ll say it again, staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your health, try get in two litres each day. Omaha Bootcamp meets at Omaha Surf Club – Monday, Wednesday & Friday 7am-7.45am
AFTER SUN REMEDY At some point this summer you may find yourself in the sun for a little too long. If that’s the case the Great Barrier Island Co have just what your skin needs to recover. Their After Sun Cooling Gel for sun stressed skin has both a cooling and healing effect enriched with Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera to soothe and calm, and Arnica and Manuka Honey to assist with nourishing and healing your irritated skin due to over exposure to the sun.

NOT ALL CANDLES ARE CREATED EQUAL You may wonder if there is a real difference between traditional paraffin candles and the new wave of soy wax candles? As a renewable resource, soy candles do boast more eco-bragging rights than conventional candles and being biodegradable, they really are an eco-friendly product. Soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin wax, which is made from crude oil, with no petrol-carbon soot that can blacken walls as well as release toxic carcinogens into the air. Soy candles also have a longer burn time. At Lily’orne & Co. we are confident in offering a product that has been made with the environment in mind. All of our candles are lovingly hand poured and packaged locally. Fine fragrances are combined with 100% soy wax with no GMOs or paraffins and all wicks are made from pure cotton and are lead and zinc free.

Creative Matakana is back for a second year of workshops in May 2018. The inaugural 2017 series of 5-day creative courses was a nearsellout with rave reviews. Josephine Connor and Vivienne Kerr met over a decade ago, they finish each other’s sentences and are cheerfully rude to each – signs of a good, long friendship. Viv is in charge of admin. “This was all Jo’s idea,” she says. “I don’t have a creative bone in my body. I’m the proverbial ‘backroom Charlie’.” Jo’s inspiration for Creative Matakana was the Autumn Art School in Wanaka. She lives in Epsom and Viv lives in Pukawa on Lake Taupo. So why Matakana? “Well, it’s a hive of creativity with loads to do,”

Local businesswoman Tanya Svendsen, owner and designer at The Design Pod in Matakana, said there was a definite spike in sales during the week in 2017. This year there’ll be some shorter courses, so hopefully participants can indulge in more retail therapy and being in the May shoulder season, accommodation businesses will find Creative Matakana helpful too.
There’s also a series of four ‘Landscape Days’ this year; innovative garden design with Lynda Hallinan, Andy Hamilton and others, two guided tours of Gibbs Farm sculpture park, a special dinner, and a finale event at the Vivian Gallery.
This year, five-day courses include drawing and painting, flax weaving, creating a children’s story

Set in the heart of Matakana, Artform carefully curates collections, wall art, sculpture and jewellery. Driven by passion, the team at Artform work tirelessly with artists and makers, to ensure customers have the best experience when visiting. “We think it is as important to have an inspiring and enjoyable visit, as it is for us to actually sell to you. Your memory of the inspirational, colourful world you have been introduced to will stay with you,” they explain. “We aim to make our artists
and creative people flourish. With the support through people purchasing their work, our artists are able to create, design and make. This, in turn, brings beauty and character into people’s life.” Angus truly believes in being the facilitator between the energy of the artist, the client and home where the piece lives. The pieces are created by hand with heart, soul, blood sweat and tears poured into the pieces. Logic doesn’t come into the drive that artists have to carry on; it is from deep creativity and passion for their craft that this desire to express themselves comes. You can’t but help have part of that passion in each and every piece when selecting. It is then just a matter of a harmonious match between the piece and its’ new owner.
The new website is enriched with stories from the studios, showing and demonstrating some of the inspiration behind the pieces and the technical skills required to create. The website now also sells online, and while this doesn’t quite replace a visit in person, the website allows you to view each piece with a 360-degree revolving image, so that you know exactly what you are selecting. This summer, there is even more on offer at Artform. New artists, a far greater selection in wall sculpture and stunning new craft disciplines. Be sure to visit. 2 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana www.artformgallery.co.nz

HUNTER
Dawn Clayden gazes with satisfaction around her new ceramics studio. It’s been a long time in the making. Dawn, her partner Eric and five-year-old daughter Charlotte lived in the little cottage for 18 months while renovating the 1930s bungalow on their Mangawhai Road lifestyle block. “It’ll be a massive change from the tiny single room I’ve been working in,” she says, happily. “This cottage is well over 100 years old and was relocated onto the property in the 1970s. I love it – it’s got so much character.” Now she has a clear slate to get stuck into a whole new phase of her work, and she can’t wait. Her style is all about feminine florals embellished with touches of metallic gold or silver. She also creates quirky ceramic figurine sculptures, which have been so popular that she’s had to close orders while she catches up with commissions. “My entire working and studying life has revolved around pottery and ceramics,” she says. I was keen on fashion design but my first job out of high school was at Morris & James pottery in Matakana.” In 2005 Dawn left Morris & James to study design full time at Unitec, majoring in Object Design. “In my last year I was very lucky to do an internship at Studio Ceramics. I worked with a mould-maker who originally worked for Crown Lynn and to this day I still use the processes he taught me. I graduated with a Bachelor of Design in 2009, and in 2010 got straight into my Master’s degree.” This was an opportunity for Dawn to explore the limits of porcelain clay. She took on an intense theoretical discourse surrounding taste, ornamentation, socio-cultural issues and the impact of mass-production graduating in 2013. “I wrote my thesis while my daughter was under a year old,” she marvels “to this day I don’t know how I did it!” Dawn’s love of flowers is present in most of her ceramics. But it’s not all super-girly. “I’ll often add a disruption of drips to pieces that can get too pretty,” she says. “And there’s a fair bit of tonguein-cheek humour in my sculptural pieces." Most of her work is devoid of colour which she sees as

distracting, preferring to work in plain white or sometimes black. She’s fizzing about the year ahead. “I’ve got some inspiring collaborations in the pipeline for 2018. One of my favourites recently has been with Eleanor Ozich. I made a collection of tableware for her gorgeous new book, The Art of Simple. It was so great to collaborate with another woman, working on what we both loved most.” You’ll find Dawn’s work in The Poi Room (Ponsonby and Newmarket) and Studio Black in Riverhead. Dawn hopes to have some work in a local gallery and is also planning a little shop at her new favourite place: the fresh new space in her cottage studio. REVIEW
LOCAL BOOKS WE GATHERED HERE BY DAVID R. GRANT WITH HELEN JACK Matakana historian David R. Grant was born in Rotorua in 1940 and in 1942 moved with his family to a dairy farm on the Glen Eden River at Matakana. He attended the Matakana Public School in 1945 along with his siblings, played inside the Dairy Factory on Sundays with the other local children and remembers his mother cutting the ribbon for the opening of Matakana Co-op Trading co. (Now Four Square), in 1955. ‘We Gathered Here’ traces the history of Matakana village from the earliest settlers through to the mid-1980s when the first grape vines were planted. Centred on the gathering places in the village, the book paints a picture of a vibrant and tight-knit rural community who together faced the rigours of settler life in establishing a village community, and
could say, ‘This is our gathering place.’ He tells of how the Matakana Public Hall, built in 1959, was in fact the third hall of its kind to be built, with the previous two both burning down in 1885 and then in 1958. “The Hall was the centre of social life for Matakana” and David reveals that “the Ladies Patriotic Committee, in World War One, built a shooting range on the stage.” At over 500 pages, this valuable book draws on memoirs, newspaper reports, minute books, photo collections and personal memories. David tells the stories of lives, loves, fears and achievements lived – the stories that shape the Matakana community today. The book is available from Matakana Village Books. www.wegatheredhere.co.nz
TRUE TALES OF KAWAU ISLAND 2017 BY DON ARMITAGE There is nothing quite like local knowledge, especially when it dates back through generations. True Tales of Kawau Island by Don Armitage compiles a collection of around 100 stories and over 250 photos and images about Kawau Islanders. He has taken stories such as Piers Barney's childhood memory of meeting the legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong at Vivian Bay while netting piper and preserved them in a literary time capsule. With fifteen previous publications, which include the Chatham Islands, various areas in the Coromandel, and Whangarei Heads, Don has hit on a great formula for weaving together locals’ stories. “This ‘True Tales’ format is a tremendously good model for any small community to throw a net far and wide to capture its own history and bring it to life once again rather than have it lie forgotten
and eventually go completely out of existence,” said Don. “There’s an endless number of stories out there, and no one group or individual has a monopoly on our history; it is for everyone to enquire into, research, recall and pass on. As the years pass, the stories contained within such books will only become more compelling reading.” A website has been set up dedicated to encouraging the spread of such publications to communities throughout New Zealand. True Tales of Kawau Island 2017 can be bought at Kawau Cruises office on Sandspit wharf and at Mansion House on Kawau Island during summer. With so many stories to tell as a second edition is in the pipeline. 09 438 8313 www.truetales.co.nz

REUBEN
The Pipi Pickers are probably familiar to regular visitors of the Matakana Farmers Market – the band often entertains the Saturday crowds with their lively bluegrass music and cheeky sense of humour. It’s a family affair, with Jenine Abarbanel on vocals and double bass, husband Nat Torkington on 5-string banjo, Nat’s father Barry on guitar and Garry Bigwood on mandolin. Founded in 2007, the band will celebrate 10 years

together with the release of their second studio album, titled With a Spade. Jenine’s vocals and Nat’s banjo take the spotlight in all 16 tracks on the album, as they well should. Her voice has been compared to that of Natalie Merchant, and Nat is widely considered to be the best 5-string Earl Scruggs style banjo player living on Ti Point. Together they weave stories of love and heartbreak – voyaging across the water and down along the Dixie Line. Their quirky sense of humour comes through on tracks like Stripes when Jenine sings: “The only thing saving your life…is that I don’t look good in orange and I hate stripes.” There are a few slower songs, including a tongue-in-cheek cover of Meghan Trainor's 2014 mega hit All About That Bass, but for the most part the album is all up-tempo swinging bluegrass – it’s impossible to listen without moving at least some part of your body. Definitely worth a listen!
