HISTORY IN THE MAKING
Warkworth Museum, like all museums can display only a small percentage of the prized possessions that benefactors have gifted for future generations to enjoy and to learn from. The many visitors to the museum, who enjoy the varied displays, would be unaware of the constant activity behind the scenes which is necessary to preserve and care for these treasures. The Museum’s collection has been acknowledged as a “regional collection of significance” and includes clothing, artefacts, photos and documents. Combined, these three collections number well over 20,000 items, all of which need to be cared for properly to ensure that they can continue to tell their stories to future generations. Donations come in all shapes and sizes, and arrive in a variety of ways from deceased estates to folks just downsizing. Recently an incredible antique silk wedding dress was handed in to the Hospice shop, in a plastic bag! While 40 original blueprints for the Warkworth cement works,
stored in a metal tube were handed in by a man who had worked for Portland Cement Company in Whangarei. Preventative conservation is undertaken daily to care for the collections and to minimise any deterioration in them and the army of museum volunteers are never short of work. Pest control is an ongoing task and as well as routinely checking existing items, new ones are checked for pests before they are displayed or stored. In 2016, there was a mass undertaking to eradicate borer from items in the collection. Based on recommendations from Te Papa, who regularly offer advice and ongoing support, and with funding from Auckland council, items were wrapped in calico to prevent condensation (and therefore cracking), then wrapped in plastic and moved into a refrigerated container. This was lowered to minus 20 degrees celsius for seven days, thawed slowly and then repeated to kill off any surviving borer and prevent eggs
from hatching. Volunteers working within the vast textiles department ensure that, if not on display, items are wrapped in acid free paper and placed in acid free boxes. Photographs are stored in acid free envelopes, reducing the possibility of light damage and discolouration. Recently a suitcase of letters was left at reception and so the Museum is utilising the support of the Alexander Turnbull Library’s paper conservator, Vicky-Anne Heikell, to offer advice on their protection and storage. But things are not merely stored, they are researched and the stories behind them are revealed, recorded, shared and enjoyed. After all, their previous owners enjoyed full lives and their stories deserve not to be forgotten. The lives and achievements of a large number of past residents of the Warkworth district are very well known by the people behind the scenes because of the treasures that they left behind or the pictures that recorded their daily activities and special

occasions. In addition, there is a wealth of letters, diaries and other documents, both personal and business related. The museum recognises the significance of having older members of the community still able to personally share their experiences and so they record oral histories where possible and encourage people to come forward if they have stories to share.
The Museum welcomes visits from schools and tailor their experience to meet the students’ motivations for coming along. Students have been able to experience butter-making, washday and used the printing press that was another treasured donation.
Rarely do people feel that they have done all they can do. Fresh ideas for new displays are constantly being sought and thoughts about how to share treasures are discussed frequently, both in-house and with other local museums, ensuring that people never tire of visiting the museum.
Also, the ‘Tea and Talks’ mornings have become popular with those wishing for more in depth stories on our local heritage.

©Uli Kunz
Underwater cameraman and storyteller Steve Hathaway has won the 2019 BLAKE Environmental Award – a prize given in the memory of Sir Peter Blake that recognises inspirational New Zealanders who’ve shown determination and a belief in achieving extraordinary things. Steve is from Snells Beach where he founded Young Ocean Explorers with his daughter Riley in 2012. Together they have inspired thousands of school children to take better care of our oceans. “It was a huge surprise to get this award,” he says. “You look around at other people doing amazing stuff, and to get singled out is a great honour. It also opens up doors – new people will start following what we’re doing. We’ve got a vision and also need other people to come onboard and partner with us.”
8
Steve says the award means a lot to him, especially since Sir Peter Blake was one of his heroes. “He was really ahead of the curve as far as the ocean was concerned. Some of the stuff he was saying over 20 years ago we’re only starting to catch up on now. One thing that really inspires me about him was just his vision for educating kids. I saw a video of Sir Peter Blake where he was talking about how he wanted to take educational videos about the ocean into every classroom around the world. All the hairs on my body just stood up, because a week or two later we were launching our Young Ocean Explorers website and videos at the Sir Peter Blake room at the Auckland Museum.” Steve says he feels it’s important to give the next
generation hope for the future. “Kids these days are constantly being bombarded by messages about our climate emergency – that there’s only 12 years left, things like that. But we want to say that there is hope. We can turn it around.” “But if we don’t want to do anything ourselves, we can’t expect anybody else to change. Yes, you are only one of billions of people on the planet, but we can start small. Think about your own use – buy stuff that lasts longer, buy presents that will be used more than just a couple of times.” Steve has called his latest project the 21 Day Challenge. “In the leadup to America’s Cup in 2021, our aim is to get over 2,000 classrooms helping to restore

the health of the Hauraki Gulf and beyond. So kids will have three challenges to complete over 21 days: pick up a piece of plastic every day; make a video around an issue or cool idea; and think about how they’re gonna make that video go far and wide.”
©Uli Kunz
When he’s not creating dramatic underwater footage for BBC and the likes, Steve likes to spend time snorkelling at some of his favourite local spots, like Tawharanui. “A lot of people don’t think of it as a snorkelling destination, but just go off the side of the rocks when there is no swell. There’s plenty of days when it’s really calm and you can see lots of crayfish, snapper and eagle rays. It’s a beautiful reserve.” www.youngoceanexplorers.com

THE SAWMILL BREWERY UPDATE Sadly there was an accidental fire at the Brewery and Smoko Room. It spread throughout the office and services to the building and there is damage to the brewery roof. This unfortunately means the Brewery and Smoko Room are closed until further notice. TAKING TO THE SKIES Fergs Paragliding and Adventure is the only Northland paragliding and adventure school based out of Mangawhai Heads. Owner Mike Ferguson started the business a year ago with the aim of sharing his passion for paragliding and adventure in Northland, and has steadily regrown the sport locally in Northland establishing some new flying sites and sharing these with the Northland Hangliding and Paragliding Club. “Northland has amazing sites and, depending on the weather, you will find local paragliders soaring at Pakiri, Mangawhai and Ocean Beach in the East to Te Mairie, Glinks Gully in the west, or chasing thermals inland,” says Mike. “Paragliding is easy to learn – as long as you have moderate fitness and enjoy learning,” he tells us. “Modern paragliders allow you to soar like a bird on
coastal breezes or taking thermals inland and flying for long distances.” To learn you have to join the association and do a course under an instructor. These courses run on small training hills, where you will learn basic techniques used to control the paraglider. At Ferg’s, Mike runs courses throughout the year, most weekends and full time over the summer, so you can start at any time of the year! Mike explains, ”on the first day you will get the experience of flying solo, starting with small glides and quickly building up to high flights.” “We cover important theory associated with flying a paraglider and gain a basic understanding of the weather, then progress to higher flights under the close supervision of an instructor, with the use of UHF radios.”
Mike was introduced to the sport six years ago and was instantly hooked. “It has allowed me to reconnect a passion of aviation that came from my grandfather. I soloed an aircraft while still at school and had my basic licence before I had a driver's licence.” After joining the army and spending some time in the Airborne component this passion was put on hold for 20 years until Mike was introduced to the sport by friends. “Once bitten I progressed quickly through paragliding to become a full instructor, tandem pilot and competition pilot, having competed at the New Zealand, Canadian, Greek and USA Nationals, and many Australian and pre-world cup competitions. These are all arenas that allow me to spend time with the best pilots in the world.”

POWERED BY NATURE
It was Tony and Nina’s intrepid lifestyle that sparked the launch of Blue Adventures and later, Teepee Glamping. The couple met working in the ski fields in Queenstown, then decided to go exploring and spent the next few years sailing on Tony’s yacht in Eastern Australia, travelling throughout Asia and Europe, chasing the wind and waves and working odd jobs in between. They took the plunge into self-employment with their water sports school ‘Blue Adventures’ in 2011, after settling on the Matakana Coast, where Tony grew up, and deciding on a life-work-surf balance that keeps their life blissfully streamlined. “The business just evolved. We started balancing the business between other jobs but soon decided that the business could support our lifestyle, says Tony, who is a commercial skipper and one of New Zealand’s most qualified kitesurfing instructors. Over the years the business grew and they now

employ five instructors over summer, teaching kitesurfing, wakeboarding, foil boarding and paddle boarding the Matakana Coast and Auckland and offering kitesurfing holidays to the South Pacific in their off season. “We found our niche market in offering multi-day water sport packages, which include kitesurfing lessons and accommodation for groups of six to eight people." Over the years these action-packed mini-holidays grew in popularity, with many clients returning year after year. "We now run our Kite Camps on most weekends during summer,'' says Tony. To accommodate their guests the couple have set up three tepee sites on large circular timber platforms, hovering over native rushes and grasses at the bottom of their serene 1.1 ha property. “The setting is just beautiful and glamping is a great fit for our outdoor-savvy Blue Adventures clients. says Tony.
Blue Adventures’ new surf shop has opened it’s doors at the Omaha estuary, offering a collection of high quality surfboards, paddle boards and foil- and kite boarding equipment as well as a beautiful range of adults and kids swim and beach wear.
Just recently the couple expanded their business by opening a small surf shop at the Omaha Estuary, offering a hand-picked collection of surfboards, paddle boards, foil and kitesurfing equipment, as well as wetsuits and beach wear. “As we spent a lot of time outdoors it comes natural to us to care for the environment. This is why we source high quality products that last, and if possible are produced in a sustainable way, says Tony. “A favourite of mine is our kids swimwear range, which is made out of recycled ocean plastics, adds Nina. You can find Nina and Tony’s new surf shop on the Omaha Estuary at 329 Omaha Flats Road, where you can also sign up for Blue Adventures' water sports lessons or grab a rental board.

At Goat Island you get to see the best of what nature has to offer in New Zealand; explore the beautiful hikes on land or see the vast diversity of marine life displayed in the ocean. The marine reserve is a prime example on why we need more protected areas and why we should help protect our astonishing marine life. Goat Island offers the picture-perfect spot to swim and snorkel with some of the biggest and friendliest Snappers you’ll ever see. Join a Guided Snorkel Tour (advanced or beginner) or hire the equipment and explore on your own to get a close
look at Sting Rays; explore the bottom for Red Moki, Hiwi Hiwi, Crayfish or Goat Fish, and swim with schools of Silver Drummers, Sweep, Kahawai and King Fish. If you’re lucky a Dolphin, Seal or Orca might pop in and say hi! Under the surface you’ll see beautiful kelp forests, rocky swim throughs and can even explore the caves. The aquascape is spectacular and filled with life right off the beach, and the best way to indulge is with a scuba dive. Book onto an Open Water Course where you will learn to dive in the spectacular Sponge Gardens surrounded by fish. If you’re already a scuba diver, you can go on a Guided Tour, continue your education with specialty or advanced courses, or hire the equipment and explore the many dive sites Goat Island has to offer.
The marine reserve is the perfect combination of a fun and educational day out. Learn about the outdoors while submerging yourself in it – surrounded by a beautiful beach, native trees and an ocean playground. The island itself (only 100 meters off the shore) offers a view you normally only see in travel magazines. TREKKING THE TE ARAROA For those wishing to avoid the road walking section, you could obtain a boat ride across the estuary to the Mangawhai Spit. Care of sandnesting birds is required on this Scientific Wildlife Reserve - please stick to the shoreline. Lower tide time is best, so check tide times before setting off. Avoid dune nesting sites and no dogs allowed. Please take care all the way down the beach and avoid entering taped/marked nesting sites, particularly if needing to venture upstream to cross. Where possible, avoid the sand-dunes area altogether.
Te Araroa traverses New Zealand’s new super city – a far reaching district of contrasts. The trail leaves glorious white sandy beaches in the north and ventures inland for a taste of the semirural before racing back to the coast via suburban footpaths. With a ferry into the CBD, Te Araroa leaves the Pacific Ocean and its harbours and heads across the isthmus to the Manukau Harbour before venturing inland to experience more of the diversity of the Auckland region. You can trek the local route (Mangawhai to Pakiri) which is a 30km easy tramping route, taking approximately 7-8 hours. Starting at the beach
carpark on Wintle Street, Mangawhai Heads; from here follow the road to the walkway by 44 Wintle Street, which leads down to the estuary. Follow the estuary past a camping ground, a boat ramp and holiday baches until wooden steps lead up to the Findlay Street walkway. From Findlay Street, head left into Molesworth Drive until reaching Mangawhai Village. Then a right into Moir Street, left into Insley Street and across the estuary then left into Black Swamp Road. Follow this road until reaching Pacific Road which leads you through a forestry block to the beach and the next stage of Te Araroa.
Goat Island Dive and Snorkel is the perfect place to bring your friends and family. Hire the equipment or let one of our Dive professionals show you the best places while teaching you about the fish, the reserve and a few new skills. We offer Snorkel & Dive Tours, Try Dives, Open Water Courses, Air fills and Retail. Book Today!

Just 1km south, a stream cuts across the beach and it can go over thigh height, as can other water crossings on this track. When heavy rain and high tide coincide these rivers can be deep; never cross flooded rivers. Follow the coast southwards for another 2km, then take the track over Te Arai Point. Once back on the beach, continue south for 12km (fording Poutawa Stream on the way) until you cross the Pakiri River then head inland to reach the end of Pakiri River Road. The walk concludes at the For maps and more information on transport and accommodation etc. visit their website.

SENSIBLE FISHING FOR OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE
For Tony and Bea Orton, the ocean is their life and it’s a future they want all our children to enjoy in the same way they have. To run a successful local charter operation and international guiding business like Offshore Adventures you need a healthy supply of fish and “out of this world” fishing destinations to ensure your clients have that “trip of a lifetime experience”.
“Fishing tourism is now big business with more and more people wanting to tick off that bucket list fish/experience and wanting everything preorganised from airport pickups, lodging, quality boats and tackle and amazing fishing action both here in New Zealand and the couple's overseas trips,” Tony says. Tony and Bea are about to start building a new
purpose built lodge in Mangawhai Heads in the next few months to cater for their international clients. There is a need for sustainable and sensible fishing habits to ensure an operation like this can continue well into the future. Tony is big on catch and release and only keeping enough for a meal or two. “Fishing should be more about the experience than destroying the habitat, as our actions today will reflect on what will be left for our children’s future.” The couple have learnt a lot from their last 14 years of fishing overseas and brought some of the more sustainable methods back to New Zealand. Offshore Adventures does not anchor at the Mokohinau Islands to ensure the seafloor is not destroyed from dragging anchors. Only circle hooks are used to prevent gut hooked fish so they can be released in the best possible condition and their boat limits are set well below the national limit of three kingfish per person, to one per angler. “The Mokohinau Islands are a stunning place and with a few simple practices like this and it could remain in pristine condition for ever,” Tony says. Check out their website for more on Tony and Bea’s adventures. www.journeyofafisherman.com

BOHEMIAN CIDEROLOGY
Three years ago, Justin and Cynthia made their first keg of cider for a pop-up bar at The Mount Albert Street Food Station. The crowds absolutely loved it and so Bohemian Cider was born. Since then, it’s been a steady progression from selling at Farmers’ Markets to supplying kegs of fresh unpasteurised cider to local outlets, like Tahi Bar and the Leigh Sawmill Café. The next exciting phase for Bohemian Cider is about to kick off with the opening of a new production facility just out of Warkworth. “The new Cidery will allow us to expand our small pack production so we can supply bottles to local outlets and in the city,” says Justin. “We are also hoping to open a Tasting Room and Cider Fillery at the site.” Cynthia is excited about the new location of the Cidery. “We feel lucky to have found our dream spot for the Cidery - it is surrounded by beautiful native bush with waterfalls and glow-worms. We were amazed when we found out that the new Cidery was built on the site of what was once New Zealand’s largest apple orchard. The apples were sent to Auckland via boat on the Mahurangi River. That’s some great history for us to be associated with.” So what about the cider? “We do wild fermentations with Organic Apples including the skins and pulp – like a good red wine. This gives our cider way more flavour than a conventional fermentation,” cider maker Justin says. Their natural cider making philosophy continues with no filtration or added sulphites. “Our Original Cyn apple cider is often praised by cider drinkers from the West Country in the U.K. – the home of cider!” Bohemian also has a focus on innovative cider flavours. “The great thing about cider is how well it combines with so many different flavours. The sky’s the limit on what you can use. Look at our Tamarillo Cider with Amarillo Beer hops. People are initially curious about this cider but are blown away once they try it. It’s actually converted a few beer drinkers to cider,” says Justin. Christmas Advent Calendar AVAILABLE NOW

NEW LOOK FOR THE OLD SCHOOL VILLAGE BUTCHERY
The Matakana Village Butchery has undergone its biggest makeover in its entire 73-year history. Now when you enter the butchery you will see a beautiful polished concrete floor, stained wooden wall and gorgeous white subway tiles, as well as huge new display chillers full of all types of meat cuts. “It’s hard to comprehend how far we have come in such a short time,” says owner Matt Watts. “Six years ago we packed up our life in Western Australia to return to our home town after buying the old butchery from ex-All Black, Glenn Osborne. It’s such a rare opportunity to find a working village butchery and we knew straight away there was potential to grow this old school butchery into a thriving business.”
Matt and wife Sarah worked extremely hard in the first couple of years to turn the old butchery into something the local Matakana community would patronise on a regular basis. The butchery is also dual licensed meaning they also provide a very busy homekill service to the area.
years has been quite incredible and I couldn’t have achieved this without the support of my extremely hard working, highly-skilled butchery team: Mike, Jake, and Donald.” “The makeover was a huge undertaking but we have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback received and we are really looking forward to another busy summer ahead.”
Everything is produced onsite with lamb, beef and pork arriving in carcass form which allows Matt and his team of butchers to produce a wide range of quality cuts. On top of that all the sausages, small-goods bacon and ham are made in house, including the ever popular Christmas hams. They even stock a range of gluten-free, nitrate-free, free range and organic meats.
The future looks bright for Matakana Village Butchery. If you haven’t visited for a while make sure you pop in and check out the incredible makeover for yourself!

envelope a little bit in terms of what a standard building would be.”
Designed by Dorrington Atcheson Architects, the home is made up of two pavilions clad in cedar shiplap and black ply blending artfully into the surrounding native bush. “We ended up with two sections – one with the kitchen, living, dining and the second with three bedrooms and a bathroom,” says architect Tim Dorrington. “It’s quite a playful space. And it was a fun project because of the challenges with the site and the willingness of the client to push the
Tim says that access to the site was one of the main challenges when designing. “It was tough trying to design something that was actually buildable,” he says. “It’s pretty steep, and every last thing you take there has to come over by boat or helicopter. All the piles were helicoptered over, so that was quite an organisational challenge. A lot of stuff was loaded up on barges on the Sandspit side and then sailed over – we must have got at least six to eight barges full. Then once it’s here you have to bring
it all up from the jetty to the house by cable car.” Inside the house, use of raw materials such as solid-oak floorings, concrete benchtops and steel splashbacks contrast well with bold bursts of colour in the bedrooms. Tim says a lot of thought was put into how the house would blend in with the surroundings. “It’s only been built to be as big as it needs to be. The cedar was left natural so eventually, it will weather off. From a sustainability perspective, it's built to stand the test of time. It doesn't have a lot of toxicity in the materials and doesn't need a lot of maintenance. And it has a passive design, so you've got windows in the right place

Tim says he is proud of how much functionality he fit into a small footprint.
This is the second house Tim Dorrington has designed on Kawau, the other for the brother of the same family as this home. DAA are also designing several houses around Matakana, and have just finished one on Whitmore Road heading out to Tawharanui.
“It functions almost as a large holiday resort for two or three families – or for a group of 20 friends – even though it's only 120 square metres. It works like a house twice that size. The design allows for maximum flexibility – it can function as a family bach, or as an event centre, or even as a campground.” “The back courtyard has a fireplace for hanging out at the end of the day. The main lounge area opens up to the covered deck immediately outside, which is more of your daytime spot – it’s a very natural extension sticking out into the treetops and looking out over the view,” says Tim. “So the main living happens outside, as there
Tim says he enjoys coming up to the area. “I love getting up here – jumping on a bike and going fishing from Omaha bridge. Matakana has changed a lot over the years. When I used to visit my grandparents in Point Wells as a child, Matakana was only a petrol station, so it's really been growing, but still has a relaxed feel which is great for holidays.” info@daa.co.nz www.daa.co.nz/projects/kawau-island

ART
A CUT ABOVE: ROSS MANN WORDS
“Why sculpt with a chainsaw?” I asked Ross Mann, to which he quite reasonably replied, “Why not? I’ve got all the power tools and I’m comfortable using them, so it made sense to use them for my sculptures. You can get quite a fine finish with the chainsaw, but I also use a “grinding disk and sander for some parts, and I finished the face with a chisel.” Ross’s latest work – his interpretation of Michelangelo’s ‘David’ – is an enormous, rugbygear-wearing warrior, carved from a huge eucalyptus log. “I call him Dave because he is a Kiwi after all,” Ross tells me. Dave is currently resident at the airport at Onerahi (Whangarei)

where he can be seen for the duration of the Rugby World Cup. He will then move on to the Whangarei Quarry Gardens exhibition in November and Ross is hopeful Dave will put in an appearance at Sheepworld before the end of the year. Ross is a carpenter with a passion for the arts and a member of the Mahurangi Artist Network. Besides being a chainsaw sculptor, he also dabbles in painting, furniture-making and creating artworks from found and recycled materials. “I like to make things from demolition and debris off the beach. I put the kayak in the water, go around the coast and collect interesting bits of wood and
other flotsam. I demolished an old kauri church in Maungaturoto around 25 years ago and I still have bits of that I’m using to make furniture.”
Ross’s current passion is sculpting full-size human figures out of large logs. “It’s very demanding,” he explains. “One sculpture started as a four tonne log and now it’s down to about a quarter of a tonne. I might have an idea of what I would like to make but I’m governed by what the log will allow. I have to remove 80% of it to find what’s in there.” Ross has recently had some success with a run of possums sculpted with his chainsaw from blocks
of wood. “People can buy them and put them in a tree outside,” he laughs. “I stain them so they are durable and weather-protected.” When the chainsaw phase passes, Ross has other artistic pursuits in mind. “I’m very keen on trying out other avenues like woodcutting, lino cutting, sketching and painting. I’ve got a lot of materials to use and I’m quite strict about using up what I’ve got.” If you would like to see some more of Ross’s work, he has three full-size human forms at Sheepworld and, who knows, Dave might just turn up there soon. www.facebook.com/MahurangiArtists

MASTER CRAFTERS
THINKING OUTSIDE THE DRESS WORDS
MARLA
FERGUSON
On a blustery Spring afternoon, Joanna Curtis crouches and makes a limping, jagged stride across the length of her workshop overlooking the Mahurangi River. ‘Crafty Creeper’ comes alive. Papier-mâché, fabric, cardboard, paint and polystyrene coalesce to create an ominous representation of sewing supplies animated. They can’t pinpoint where the ideas come from, but they are a collaboration between sisters Joanna and Cherith Curtis, their dreams and sparks of inspiration from everyday life. This year’s wearable art creation ‘Crafty Creeper’, modelled by Joanna, swept the 2019 Hospice Catwalk Arts Awards with the top award in Wearable Advertising, People’s Choice and the Supreme Award. Creating and making art has always been central to the Curtis sisters’ lives. “We’ve always made costumes for fun,” says Joanna. Their father was a master carpenter who enjoyed boat building, and their mother dabbled in watercolour painting. “I was always at Dad’s bench,” recalls Cherith. She has a mind for construction and is often the one responsible for creating construction plans. They both work on the construction of their pieces, moulding and carving their visions out of papier-mâché and polystyrene, covering them in paint and fabric. Joanna is a dressmaker by trade and owns Revision Sewing Services, and Cherith is a fine artist in pencil and oil. Until three years ago, their creative lives did not intertwine. But then Cherith came to work with Joanna. The ideas started springing to the surface, and their banter conceived a first entry into Catwalk Arts in 2017, an interpretation of Joan of Arc constructed of bits and pieces from old leather goods-belts, bags, old clothing ”anything we could get our hands on!” explains Joanna. It was a success. And they enjoyed the process and were bubbling with new ideas. In 2018 they created an interpretation of Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (The Lady in Gold), inspired by the artist’s 100th death anniversary. Cherith acted as the model for that year’s show. Every piece is a production from the model

acting the part, the music playing when the model enters the stage, to the actual wearable creation. “Stage presence is huge,” says Joanna and she is quickly followed by Cherith, “It can make or break a piece.” Their attention to detail is extraordinary, down to the menacing faces hand-painted on an oversized pincushion. 2019’s Crafty Creeper was an idea rolling around in their consciousness well before they put sewing machine, paint, canvas and polystyrene to work. This year they wanted to focus on the tools of the trade of their shop. “It slowly built,” explains Cherith, “sometimes following circles down a rabbit hole.” During busy seasons at Revision, the sisters don’t have much time leftover to work on their concepts, outside of bouncing ideas off of each other, so they wait for lulls in their schedule to sew, paint and construct their visions. Next year’s wearable art submission is already in the planning stages. “We both, separately, thought of the same idea! I think we just spend far too much time together,” laughs Joanna. No one is complaining!

BULKING UP FOR 2020 WORDS
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
Charmaine encourages any new arrivals to the district to check out MRC. “This is a great place to meet people and make connections. It’s a feelgood place with teams to suit everyone, from junior to senior.” If you just want to watch a game and have a drink and a snack afterwards, you are welcome to become a social member.
Mahurangi Rugby Club (MRC) Chairperson, Charmaine Gravatt, is aiming high for 2020. “We are working towards having Premier One and Premier Two teams, an Under 21 team, an Under 85kg team, and a women’s team. If we can pull all of that off, we’ll be absolutely stoked,” enthuses Charmaine. Keeping up the player numbers in a small community is hard, but with the success of the Mahurangi College First XV over the last two years, Charmaine is confident of some talented new recruits for the senior teams. “We want to get the Under 85kg team up and running for next year to make it easier for school leavers to keep playing.” MRC has been nurturing a women’s Sevens team which they hope will become a Tens team next year. “It’s really about having teams available for
everyone who wants to play,” explains Charmaine. For social players, there is Golden Oldies rugby and, at the other end of the scale, a thriving junior rugby competition with over 300 players in 22 teams, including three girls’ Quick Rip teams – a pleasing area of growth for the club. There isn’t much down time with a big touch tournament about to start for the summer season. “That has had a big impact on young kids joining rugby, especially girls. They’re developing skills that are taking them all the way through to college and senior teams,” says Charmaine. This year alone has seen the club recognised by North Harbour as the ‘Junior Club of the Year’ and the J8 team were awarded ‘Best Sportsmanship’ for their winter season; a great reflection of spirit of the club and its members. Warkworth and surrounds are growing fast and
Charmaine points out that the club is very lucky to have a volunteer squad of over 100 people and very active sponsors. “We have fantastic support from our local businesses. They look after us really well.” Her first year as Chairperson has been “quite full on”, but Charmaine has a long-lasting love of rugby and the club. “I have three boys who play, I’ve played myself and so has my husband. We’ve been at the club since it was formed in 1989. There are opportunities in terms of management skills, hospitality experience, committee experience – people can grow here.” MRC is thirty years old this year, and showing off its beautiful upgraded grounds and facilities so, whether you are a long-time resident or new arrival, player or spectator, get along to the Warkworth Showgrounds on State Highway One and check out this thriving club. www.mahurangirugbyclub.co.nz www.facebook.com/MahurangiRugby

OYSTER FESTIVAL, MATAKANA 2019 This year’s third Oyster Festival Matakana was another sell out, drawing over 3500 oyster fanatics to its new venue alongside the Omaha Estuary, in the tepee Village created by Top Kata. The weather held out to provide a day of faceto-face feasting with the local oyster farming community. And the oyster crazed crowd did not disappoint, savouring a staggering 18,000 oysters on the day. Paired with an exquisite line-up of local beverages from stunning wines, craft beers and cider, festival goers had their choice from a buffet of foodie delicacies.
Many enjoyed the demonstration tent which provided an insight into local wine making and pairing, champagne masterclass, craft beer discussion and of course an education of Mahurangi Oysters. The shucking competition run by Matakana River Tours was another successful festival event with over 500 participants battling it out for the title of top shucker. In the end Ben Cleal came out on top shucking three oysters in just 6.09 seconds.

TopKåta – Tents for Events, specialise in hiring teepee tents for events throughout New Zealand since 2013. An exclusive range of event teepees provide an elite alternative to the marquee structure. Each teepee seats 70 guests comfortably, and a collection of 14 teepees can be joined to host over 1,000 people, making a stunning and totally unique space that will ‘wow’ guests and create fantastic memories. The original and largest genuine Nordic pine teepee company in New Zealand! Much of the unique character and charm of the TopKåta Teepee can be put down to the poles – natural, practical, environmentally friendly and truly
beautiful. TopKåta teepee tents are based on the traditional Nordic Kata design. The nomadic people of Northern Scandinavia constructed temporary homes using wooden poles covered in animal hides. Today TopKåta teepees are made from the same timber found only in Northern Scandinavia. Each pole is created from 100yr old, late maturing, chemical free spruce, sourced from sustainable forests. In the winter months, Swedish foresters still select and fell each tree by hand, just as generations before! Fortunately, we have advanced from animal hides with our custom made, lightweight, waterproof and wind resistant canvas, offering a sustainable, eco-friendly solution to the PVC normally used in
marquee structures. Our hire range also includes matting, dancefloors, firepits, festoons, specialist lighting, and Scandinavian style wooden tables and benches. With our teepees the possibilities are endless, we can arrange almost any shape and size for your special event. Based in Hamilton, our great crew can travel anywhere in New Zealand. Weddings, festivals, special occasions or corporate events, the TopKåta Tents will provide the perfect environment to celebrate in style. Let us make your perfect event SPECTACULAR! www.topkata.co.nz holly@topkata.co.nz

ASH GRUNWALD AT THE LEIGH SAWMILL
Blues maestro Ash Grunwald will play a headline show at Leigh Sawmill on Sunday 1 December, in support of his new album 'Mojo'. With unique storytelling through song and unleashing an avalanche of rhythmic fury on guitar, Ash will bring his brand-new show to life for Kiwi’s this Summer. Fans can expect to hear brand new tunes from the new album Mojo, including the latest single ‘Whispering Voice' (featuring Kasey Chambers) and ‘Ain’t My Problem’ (featuring The Tesky Brothers) as well as old stomping Ash favourites
‘Walking’ and ‘Money’. Recorded in the US and Australia, Mojo is Ash’s first new studio album in four years and features guest appearances by The Teskey Brothers, Mahalia Barnes and Joe Bonamassa amongst others. About the record, Ash says, “At this point, Mojo represents a journey through my own valley of darkness, and out the other side into the fresh sunlit glory of optimism and positivity. This may sound like a cliché, but when you’ve lived it, it feels very different.”
Joining Ash on all dates will be kiwi blues and roots duo Swamp Thing. Made up of multiinstrumentalist Michael Barker and guitar virtuoso Brett Adams, Swamp Thing play every show as if it was their last. With a resume including stints with Split Enz, The Mockers, John Butler Trio and Tami Neilson between them, these guys certainly have a wealth of musical experience. Limited tickets on sale at www.ticketmaster.co.nz for $39 plus booking fee. www.sawmillcafe.co.nz Leigh Sawmill Café, 142 Pakiri Road, Leigh
TE ARAI FARM ESTATE
If you live locally, you probably don’t need to be told how magical the area is, with an amazing lifestyle and the world's best beaches a stone’s throw away. Still it’s nice to keep a couple of secret spots for ourselves. Te Arai Farm Estate and Truffière is one of those, a 550-acre sanctuary occupying a prime position overlooking the world class Te Arai beach and Taranga Island. The farm estate subdivision is limited to 25 lots ranging from small, easy care acreages to a landmark 134-acre site. At the heart of the Farm Estate is the Te Arai Truffière, which is New Zealand’s largest
44
plantation, growing the elusive and highly sought after périgord black truffle. The truffière covers nearly 17 hectares, with over 9,000 hazelnut and oak trees, specially inoculated with the Périgord spores. It is tended by Philip Malajczuk with the help of his specially trained truffle spaniel, Coco. When it’s truffle season, which runs from June to August here in New Zealand, Coco is always keen to make sure she hasn’t missed any of the earthy treats. As Philip says, “It’s lucky she’s so dedicated, because I do sometimes find myself distracted by the views. It’s an amazing place to work.”
Each site at Te Arai Farm Estate has been specially surveyed to provide a private escape with a unique view, combining the Te Arai vista and tranquil rural aspects. Each one has its own magic and a limited number of sites are planted for truffles, with a management service available. Whether you’re looking for a blank canvas for your architectural vision, or somewhere to realise your garden to plate dream with some extra culinary flair, Te Arai Farm Estate offers something for you.

DYLAN LIVE IN MANGAWHAI Join us for Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece ‘Under Milkwood’ – a much loved classic celebrating the lives, loves and longings of the people of a small Welsh fishing village, Llareggub. Come with us through the “movements and countries and mazes and colours and dismays and rainbows and tunes and wishes and flight and fall and despairs and big seas of their dreams’”. Under Milk Wood is an unforgettable journey of lyrical genius. The profound meets the profane and the result is sad and sensual, bawdy and beautiful. For lovers of language, this is unmissable.
