NEW & NOTED MANGAWHAI PHYSIO: ON THE MOVE After six years in their Wood Street clinic, Clair McEntegart and her team of experienced physios are opening new, larger premises in Mangawhai Village at 5 Insley St. The clinic at Mangawhai Heads will be business as usual, open five days a week. “The extra space means we’re able to offer more services,” says Clair. “We’ll have a rehabilitation studio for Pilates and other strengthening classes. We’re excited to be able to follow clients through their rehab journey rather than referring them on. We’ve noticed a shift in the demographics of Mangawhai and we need to change and grow with the population.” Mangawhai Physiotherapy is ACC registered and can treat without a doctor’s referral. www.mangawhaiphysiotherapy.co.nz 09 431 4476

THE BUTCHERS DOG
TASTE OF MATAKANA
GREY CREATIVE DESIGN
Spotted the cute little mobile stall outside the Warkworth Butchery yet? It’s the home of the foot-long hotdog, and is getting rave reviews. Owners Peter and Tess (ex-Pottery Café) wanted to do something fun and creative to add spark to Warkworth’s lunchtime. “While we’re mainly a hotdog stand, we’ll be doing weekly specials, too,” they say. “We’re using only good meat from a good home – thanks to Rob at the Warkworth Butchery! Come and check us out.”
Wellsford local and creative industries graduate Taryn Casci has recently launched Grey Creative Design from her studio overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. From original artworks and macramé to business branding and limited edition jewellery, and with a former life in the fashion industry, Taryn has a knack for all things creative.
The Butcher’s Dog is tucked in beside the Butchery at 10 Queen Street, Warkworth, 11am 4pm Monday - Friday

GREAT THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES WORDS
Kiwi ingenuity is alive and thriving right under our noses! Omaha local Paul Russell launched Global Design and Production (GDP) in the heart of Matakana Village in 2010 and, thanks to his gogetter mindset, broad skill base and a dedicated bunch of innovators, the company is now pocketing projects and accolades by the bundle. GDP is a one-stop shop for the creation, manufacturing and distribution of products. “The business is based on these three pillars,” says Paul, CEO of GDP. “People often have a concept or an existing product yet don’t have the foggiest how to begin developing it.” That’s where Paul and his troupe of cutting-edge creators step in. “We take them through the whole process; from the design and development to the manufacturing,

and we even offer a supply chain service to distribute the finished product.” The avid surfer and paddle boarder explains GDP’s recipe for success: “Generally a customer would commission a designer to develop an idea. A manufacturer then has to decipher the concept and produce it, and the customer is left trying to get the product to market. We do the lot, yet our turnaround time is fast because we’re working with the customers’ budgets and timeline from start to finish. In this way, we give the client more return on investment.” The uber-entrepreneur started his career as a fitter and turner with Fisher and Paykel. In 1997 he took part in the NZ Fitter & Turner Championship and promptly secured the trophy
with a crab clamp that he made within two days using only hand tools. Fisher and Paykel obviously recognised the promise in this young man and sent him to Massey University in Wellington. With a degree in industrial design under his belt, he returned to F&P, this time in the marketing and design division. “My mechanical ability and my background in design and marketing gave me the skills to go out on my own,” says Paul, “plus I learnt all about production from my dad who used to manufacture in China when I was a kid.” Paul also credits the company’s achievements to his talented team. “They’re my greatest asset. Lisa Patterson keeps the entire show running smoothly and Phillie Murray is responsible for

the retail arm of the business. My indispensable accountant and best mate Bryan Simpson, CEO of Boutique Financial, makes sure our passion for design doesn’t devour the budget. Then there are the young guns, Spencer and Fin. The inspiration comes from these young guys.” Spencer Buchanan and Fin Woods graduated with First Class Honours in Industrial Design from Massey University in Wellington, and judging by their ideas, it’s no wonder Paul was keen to lure them north. In his final year at Uni in 2015, Spencer made headlines with his revolutionary mouth guard that detects concussions in rugby players via sensors and wirelessly alerts the team doctor to the extent of the knock. For his invention at a time
where the link between concussion and dementia is a hot topic, Spencer won the illustrious James Dyson Award, an international award that honours university students’ inspirational inventions. Wanaka native Fin Woods is a new recruit at GDP and has already made his mark. The tousled blond from the South developed the Atlas Raptor; a mountain bike design with cutting edge gearing technology built to withstand brutal terrain. Currently, the GDP creatives are working on over 100 products, with many more in the pipeline. The range of projects is breathtaking: from an all-inone insulated and reusable ‘Chilpac’ to aluminium pallets, bullet magazines for guns, wheel nut indicators for trucks, as well as wake towers and dashboards for boats. The company is also the
national distributor of high-end Blaupunkt lighting systems and batteries. Paul has big plans for the future. After securing the Deloitte’s Fastest Growing Manufacturing Company Award in 2016, GDP now aims to open offices in Albany and Australia later this year. With two creative daughters and a great lifestyle with his wife in Omaha, Paul is committed to keeping the command post in Matakana, where he and his avant-garde team will continue to rewrite the industry rulebook. www.globaldesign.co.nz

CARMEN BAILEY WORDS KATHY
Carmen Bailey looks thoughtfully past the glittering pool to the paddocks surrounding her home in Matakana. She’s just walked her dogs on Omaha Beach and she’s in her Thursday ‘work from home’ outfit (which often includes gumboots and a pair of secateurs). “The two people who have most profoundly affected my career have both been women,” she says. “My mother started one of the first recruitment companies in New Zealand in the early seventies. She taught me many things, but one I always remember her saying, every time I go into an interview with a candidate, is ‘this person deserves your utmost respect for the time they’ve given up to come and meet with you.’ she would say” Carmen’s company, Emergent, is well-known in

NZ for excellence in recruitment. But it wouldn’t exist if not for the support of the other woman who Carmen credits for changing her life. Diane Foreman is one of the country’s most well-known entrepreneurs. Despite leaving school at 15 and being a solo mother, Diane created a multi-million dollar empire, and was recently named by Forbes Magazine as one of the most powerful women in Asia. “I met Carmen around 2000 when she placed a CEO for me,” says Diane. “Most of my execs have come from Emergent because Carmen’s the best in the business. I chased her for a year before I persuaded her into a business partnership. But really, it’s all about my companies – quite simply, as part of Emergent I get first option on the best people. My top tip for hiring? Never take on

anyone you can’t fire – avoid friends and family!” Carmen says, “The job market is definitely more candidate-driven these days. Companies now need to identify what the drivers are for top talent outside of the job. Work-life balance, mindfulness, yoga, remote working – find out what makes them tick or you won’t attract the best.” As for employees, when Carmen looks at a CV, she’s spotting what’s not there. Gaps are pounced on. Understanding and selling your strengths and doing your due diligence in researching the company are essential before an interview. “But really,” says Carmen, “it’s about hard work, being clever and having a fantastic attitude. And good manners are always important!” Carmen mostly works on very senior roles in
the $200k–$400k salary bracket, as well as in short-term executive leasing. Her 31 years in the industry has helped her build up a vast knowledge of talent in the NZ market, which is supported by thorough researching, interviewing, shortlisting, psychology testing and referencing. She loves psych tests as a benchmark for a company, but not as the total decider for a hire. Vicki Lodge was General Manager of Human Resources for Air NZ and Mercy Ascot Hospital and has worked with Carmen for over 20 years. “I’ve never found anyone who has such an intuitive and reliable gift for placing the right person in the right position,” Vicki told us. Carmen likes to give back when possible, and there are those within her community who have received life-changing advice. A long-time local achieved his dream of getting into the fire service after months of interview coaching on Carmen’s day off. She assisted a local school leaver to get into the Navy, and Laser Plumbing in Matakana has also benefited from help with their processes. She’s currently mentoring a 24-year-old recruiter in Auckland. “She’ll be way better than me,” Carmen says. She admits that where she’s given her time to help people achieve their goals it’s as much of a thrill as the big corporate jobs, if not more so. More recently Carmen and Diane have joined forces with another Matakana local, Tim Watts, to set up Magna Consulting. It’s a new recruitment company working with younger people; emerging talent who will be tomorrow’s leaders. It’s hugely rewarding work, but full-on. In addition, although they have no kids of their own, Carmen and husband Rex are highly involved with a tribe of nephews, nieces and friends’ kids. But home is her sanctuary. “I’m on holiday every evening and weekend here. I’m currently doing a horticultural diploma part-time – my dahlias are particularly fantastic at the moment…” For now, it’s off to the garden for Carmen – until tomorrow, when it’s back to finding that perfect match. www.emergent.co.nz 245.6mm x 118.2mm

ENTREPRENUERS
YOUNG ENTREPRENUERS SOPHIE HAUSER, THE BACH, MATAKANA Tell us about your business and how you see it working in two years? I’m the proud new owner of The Bach, Matakana. In two years, it will be the go-to place for high-end surf and fashion brands. The Bach will become more of a lifestyle store focusing on the quality of our brands and staff. I have a new vision for the revamped store with some exciting new lines on their way. Can you describe the pathway that got you to here? While studying my degree in Business at Victoria University in Wellington, I worked summer holidays at The Bach. When the opportunity came up to buy the business I leapt at
it. With my family’s support behind me I’m excited about what this adventure will bring. What’s the best thing about setting up on the Matakana Coast? The location and the vibe this area generates reflects the direction I want my business to go in. The proximity to Auckland, the lifestyle and the gorgeous beaches means everyone loves Matakana Coast. It’s the perfect work/lifestyle combination for me. www.instagram.com/thebachmatakana 09 422 7477
SCOTT YEARBURY, NAILED IT CONSTRUCTION Tell us about your business and how you see it working in two years? I started Nailed It Construction a few years ago. We’ve grown from a team of two to seventeen. We do everything from new architectural homes to renovations and commercial work. From Matakana we’ve branched out to the Auckland CBD and Mangawhai. In two years we’ll be building your house. Can you describe the pathway that got you to here? I was exposed to the industry young – my Dad was a builder. In my teenage years I was happy that I could learn while I was getting paid – a win-win in my books! Now it’s no longer learning
how to bang in nails, it’s trying to find the correct systems to help the business flow smoothly and operate more efficiently. What’s the best thing about setting up on the Matakana Coast? I was brought up here – this is where it all started for me, and you couldn’t find a better place to grow a business. We’re pretty lucky to live here. www.naileditconstruction.co.nz 021 036 8820
CLAUDIA MUNRO, VAULT MAGAZINE Tell us about your business and how you see it working in two years? Vault Magazine is a student-initiated quarterly magazine that a group of Mahurangi College students and I are in the process of developing. It covers creativity within the school and interviews with inspiring members of the community. Over the next two years the magazine should have some good industrystandard processes and become a firm part of the school’s literary life. Plans include expansion to a Rodney-wide area. Can you describe the pathway that got you to here? While aspiring to a publishing career, a
random thought became a six-month process involving much emailing and persuasion. With the go-ahead from the school and some amazing mentoring from Bianca Howlett of Junction, our first issue release is on April 3. What’s the best thing about setting up on the Matakana Coast? The sense of community and support I’ve discovered – we’ve had lots of help and ideas from locals, as well as all the talent that this community offers! vaultmag1@gmail.com 021 065 6647
TINE FUNDERUD + STONE MEHARRY, GOAT ISLAND DIVE & SNORKEL Tell us about your business and how you see it working in two years? Goat Island Dive & Snorkel is an environmentally-focused 5-star PADI Dive Centre. We offer education about marine reserves and water safety, with snorkelling and scuba diving. In about two years time we hope to have raised awareness and shown lots of people how great – and necessary – marine reserves are! Can you describe the pathway that got you to here? Travelling the world diving and snorkelling gives you an enormous appreciation of the ocean. Being able to share that world and educate a new
12
generation has been a dream of ours. We worked really hard to find the best way of doing this through a field we love working in. What’s the best thing about setting up on the Matakana Coast? With its close proximity to Auckland, Goat Island Marine Reserve is a magical and very special part of New Zealand. The Matakana Coast offers world class diving. Growth in this area offers many opportunities and makes for a great lifestyle. www.goatislanddive.co.nz 09 422 6925

GREEN BUSINESS WORDS
Life is good when work and play are indistinguishable from each other, and Geert Keyaerts has found that zone. Geert is the Caddie Consultant – he gets decision-makers out of the office and onto the golf course where they can knock ideas around in a caddie-player relationship. His motto is ‘Every decision maker deserves a caddie’ and this caddie comes with over 20 years of experience in management and strategic marketing. Geert has been training as a caddie at the exclusive Tara Iti Golf Club in Mangawhai, and he quickly recognised parallels between offering advice on the fairways and his business

consultancy work. “It can be hard for decisionmakers to find honest, unbiased, direct advice. That’s where I can help,” Geert explains. “We get out into a beautiful environment, and they can relax a bit. We bat ideas back and forth while I carry the bag and offer strategic advice, mixed with a bit of golf advice – it’s a win for everyone.” Geert usually starts the relationship at a driving range where he assesses a client’s stroke and the scope of business advice they require. He then does any necessary research work before meeting the client on the golf course to walk, talk and smack a ball around nine holes – or 18 if there’s a lot to talk about.
“It is unusual but it’s also very refreshing for these people in senior positions,” says Geert. “I have a number of clients already and I still haven’t done my official launch yet, so I’m confident there’s a market there.” I can testify to what a pleasant experience it is knocking around golf balls and ideas with Geert. But it’s not about the golf, it’s about having a caddie who is there for you when you need to make those important decisions. www.thecaddieconsultant.com

CALLING THE HEROES PHOTO
It’s not easy asking for help with your business – you might be wondering where to start. Business Accelerators in Mangawhai specialise in advice on getting ahead for companies of any size. For Junction’s business issue, we had a bit of a chat and extracted some pearls of wisdom for our readers. Being in business can be exciting and rewarding. Doing something you are good at and love, while being your own boss. What’s not to like? However, as business grows we can find ourselves doing less of the things we enjoy – dealing with niggling challenges, fighting fires, and wishing for more hours in a day. Sound familiar? These are indicators you may need help. Business is HARD. But whether we struggle on, or move forward swiftly - that’s the game changer. Developing and growing business starts with dropping our ego. Accepting that we can’t be experts in everything. Successful owners are

proactive - they know what the skill gaps are, or when an issue is looming. They’re not afraid to ask for help. In our experience, clients can be quick to label the problem, but they get stuck on the “what next?” When the solution doesn’t come easy, they’ll grab a quick fix. This band aid approach doesn’t solve the problem and the fire fighting continues. First, we need to break a problem into bite size chunks and ask WHY questions… Why is this happening? Why is it a problem? Yes, it’s hard-hitting and demanding of the truth – but when we know the answer to the WHY, we can make action plans that make a bold difference. If finding a solution is tricky, or you’ve recognised a knowledge gap – speak up! Getting help is an investment, designed to save you money and put you on the right path. A fresh perspective may be all you need to move forward. Not getting help can restrict performance, limit your enjoyment and be costly.
When engaging a business expert they should be the right fit and someone you feel comfortable working with. From a position of trust, you can move mountains and business will thrive. www.business-accelerators.co.nz
BUSINESS ACCELERATOR TIPS: • Stop the firefighting – be proactive • Move forward – break a problem into bite size pieces • Understand the true cause – not manage the symptoms • Acknowledge your limitations – ask for help • Right advice at the right time, from the right people
We help your business, with business. It’s that simple. At Business Accelerators, we are here to help. We can discuss your business, identify the pain points and tailor a plan for success. Expect honesty, optimism and a little hard talk too.

After more than a decade working in London, Julian Ostling knows all about commuting. Hence when his Kiwi wife Emily relocated the family to Snells Beach in 2011, Julian had no qualms about commuting to work in downtown Auckland. “Just point me to the commuter bus,” Julian recalls with a chuckle. “I carpooled for a few years as a feasibility study,” explains Julian, before finally forging ahead with his bus brainchild, the Mahu City Express. The road to launching his new commuter coach, however, was strewn with chicanes at every turn. Unfazed and well versed as a change agent after establishing his own enterprise as a business analyst, the energetic entrepreneur negotiated his way through licensing issues, the Land Transport Act and the gnarl of Auckland Transport red tape. Finally, on Labour Weekend 2015, Julian fired up a 16-seater bus and chauffeured his first four passengers on the maiden Mahu City Express tour to the Big Smoke. “It felt euphoric whizzing down the bus lane for the first time,” grins Julian. Four months later the coach was chocka. Currently, two coaches transport 250 passengers each week on non-stop services from Snells Beach and Warkworth down to the CBD, and, with the growing traffic logjam often bringing commuters to a crawl if not a grinding halt, Julian’s comfy bus seats are filling up fast. Passengers love the service: “Taking the Mahu Express is a lot less stressful,” says Diane Halstead, an educator at Auckland Art Gallery. “It’s ecologically sound, and I love the sense of camaraderie on board.” What’s more, Julian adds a personal touch with Magnum Mondays and Fizzy Fridays, and he’ll even whip up a birthday cake. “Passengers also save time and money,” says David O’Sullivan, Julian’s business partner at Ostling and O’Sullivan. “We gain two hours a day where people can listen to podcasts, e-books or music, some check their social media, answer e-mails or simply relax. It’s a great buffer between home and work life.” If that’s not convincing enough, let’s crunch the numbers: catching the bus slashes the average commuting time by at least 30 minutes each trip. And it’s good news for the wallet. Taking fuel, maintenance, parking and tolls into account, Mahu City Express commuters more than halve their travel costs. Julian is switching up a gear and aims to add more services, but first he’s keen to hear what Junction readers need. So let’s give him our feedback and do something great for our environment, pocket and lifestyle. Melita Campbell is petite and very personable, but clearly she is also a powerhouse. Event planners are born, not made, and Melita is no exception. As a child, she took a great interest in her parents’ dinner parties and as a university student she, with some of her fellow English majors, started a catering company called ‘By Word of Mouth’. After four years in London, Melita came home, got married, had a baby and found herself commuting from Auckland to Hamilton managing V8 Supercar street races, playing ‘pass the baby’ with Grant, her fireman husband, as he headed home from night shift. A second child prompted a re-think. The decision to move north was easy after weekends spent in Omaha at Melita’s family bach. 2011 saw Melita return to the fray to manage the Summer Concert Series for Greenstone Entertainment, which she continues to do. Melita believes the Matakana region has a great deal to gain by becoming ‘event-friendly’. To

this end she teamed up with Fiona Angus who is responsible for marketing the Matakana Country Park, our largest outdoor venue. This dynamic duo are behind Destination Matakana, which offers event design and management services, and Weddings Matakana, an expo and referral service. The pair have been responsible for most of the large-scale events held at Matakana Country Park including big summer concerts and recently a 1,000 delegate Chinese convention, which went off without a hitch. Melita has steadily amassed a fabulous collection of charming, custom-made furniture and props which was beginning to outgrow their garage. While looking for storage, the local Carlton Party Hire franchise became available, and everything fell into place. Matakana Events now has a depot in Warkworth where you can access Melita’s expertise, her fabulous props and the entire range of Carlton Party Hire equipment. It’s a one stop shop run by a non-stop woman.

HALLS FOR HIRE
The recent, sympathetic restoration of the Warkworth Town Hall has transformed the 106-year-old building into the perfect event venue for the 21st century. The historic art deco features are unique and beautiful in detail, but the space is still contemporary and will complement any theme or styling you bring to your event.
The newest extension to the building houses the kitchen; the modern block also includes a lift and toilets.
There are several rooms available for hire. The first is the main hall, catering for over 330 in theatre seating or 200 for dinning. The room also includes the stage, with dressing and green rooms to the rear. The mezzanine level of the hall has permanent theatre style seating for an extra 40 people. The long room behind the mezzanine level is a well-lit space available for conferences or meetings. It seats 100 people and the little kitchenette caters for refreshments.
The team of the Warkworth Town Hall Restoration Project and community has done us all proud in fundraising and ensuring the longevity of this Category One historic building. There are still many sponsorship opportunities available, email them directly warkworthtownhall@gmail.com to find out more.
Matakana Motel is situated right in the heart of Matakana Village. All rooms have been recently renovated and air-conditioned. We also have an outdoor heated swimming pool, children’s playground and gym facilities on site. Call or visit us on-line to book your stay!

Mark Griffiths and Carmel Draper moved to the Matakana region ten years ago. As passionate foodies they’re inspired by local artisan food producers and are dedicated to showcasing them. Mark has a lifetime of chef experience and tutoring behind him, and the pair have put this to good use. Opening The Gourmet Within a couple of years ago, they’ve worked hard to find the right space in the market. They’ve now rebranded it as The Local Food Kitchen (LFK), Matakana. Carmel says, “It just feels right. Promoting our local food is an integral part of everything Mark offers. It’s his passion.” They’ll still run favourite workshops such as the Local Food Experience, where guests go to the Matakana Farmers’ Markets with Chef Mark, gather produce, meet local producers, then cook and eat together. Bookable group cooking classes continue to be on the menu. Producers include Whangaripo Valley Buffalo Cheeses, Matakana Nut Butters, Sunwalker Chillies, Mahurangi Oysters and Matakana Olive Co-op, to name a few.

The LFK also continues to offer corporate events with exceptional coordinator Kathryn Jansen. She works with many local businesses including Riverside Matakana, Kourawhero Lodge, The Vintry and Kleur Glass to round out her team-building workshops. Now the Local Food Kitchen has added monthly Sunday Sessions for home chefs to hone their skills. Tasting sessions are available for those who can’t be here on market day. And private dining is also an option, either in The LFK’s gorgeous private dining room or in your own home. Mark often caters high-end events and works closely with Matakana Estate Vineyard (soon to be expanding – watch this space). “We’re putting all our energy into giving locals and visitors an appreciation for this region’s quality artisan foods – and finding the joy in cooking with them,” says Carmel. www.thelocalfoodkitchen.co.nz

REVOLUTION ROSÉ The biggest, most fashionable, and certainly most dramatic shift in the world of wine over the past decade has been the irrepressible rise of rosé. Grown throughout the wine regions of the Mediterranean for thousands of years, it is the spread of rosé throughout the rest of the wine world that is a true phenomenon. In New Zealand, as in many new world wine regions, early rosés were often a by-product of draining juice from red wine ferments, with a focus on improving the red wine quality and somewhat less concern about the rosé itself. Now the focus has changed, and rosé has become the stylistic expression of using white winemaking techniques with red wine grapes. Grapes grown and harvested expressly for rosé allow growers and winemakers to craft wines with vibrant colour and fragrant flavours, refreshing expressions of wine that reward wine drinkers as both delicious apéritifs and versatile accompaniments to a wide variety of foods. The Matakana wine region has a become an increasingly recognised home for rosé of varying styles and impressive sophistication. Available from cellar doors, Matakana Village wine bar The Vintry, and broadly throughout the region at many cafés, restaurants, and wine shops, discovering the global rosé revolution locally has never been easier. www.matakanawine.com

Junction extends warm congratulations to the Matakana team at Meatstock 2017. Placing second in the lamb category, twelfth overall from 36 teams at New Zealand’s first festival of BBQ, Butchery and Barbers in February. Duncan Anderson, Phil Holt, Rocky Paice and Hamish Blampied – dubbed the ‘Smoke Eaters’ got started last year on testing and tasting their recipes. Duncan completed a BBQ diploma years ago and the team worked hard on their ‘low and slow’ roasting techniques via the NZ BBQ Pitmasters Facebook page – a brilliant source of inspiration for aspirational barbecuers. The team imported a huge Lang BBQ Smoker directly from Georgia, USA. “We fed many in the pursuit of excellence while testing recipes, and received fantastic support from our sponsors,” Duncan said. “At the festival, we did wonder why the experienced Australian teams abstained from alcohol on the Saturday night. However, our Beervana training had kicked in by then and our tent was the scene of some intense support as we basted and stoked the BBQ through the night.” Duncan’s tips? “Get a good meat thermometer. Use the best meat you can, and wood is critical – never use conifers like pine. Use seasoned red gum, puriri or pohutakawa if possible, manuka or fruit wood. There’s heaps of info online – amazingribs.com is great.” With the number of BBQ enthusiasts ever-growing, Duncan is confident the team’s skills will be well honed by Meatstock 2018 and that the Smoke Eaters will bring home the bacon. MORE THAN FOUR WALLS WORDS
Box™ has made impressive inroads into a very particular niche of the housing market: the perfect packaging of smart home building. Their designs sit nicely in the gap between high-end bespoke architect houses and builder-driven construction, which involves less outlay but sometimes not as much style. A recent Box™ build in the Junction neighbourhood is perched high above Mangawhai. The French clients wanted a holiday home where their family could hang out and entertain with ease. They also wanted a sunken firepit, to the delight of head architect, Tim Dorrington. An L-shaped footprint was decided upon; it fitted the contour well and created sheltered pockets of outdoor living on the exposed site. The living area has glass both sides so the marvellous views to the Hen and Chickens are available, whatever the prevailing wind. A polished concrete floor was utilised for passive heat storage. Concrete was repeated in the big solid fireplace, which has a window seat beside it – a cosy spot to curl up on a winter’s day. Exposed truss ceilings continue the industrial look, but sleek beech ply on the walls gives a natural feeling of warmth. “It was our first building project,” says owner Adeline Lemaitre, “and I did not want to think about every detail such as tap or tiles or towel rack or door handle. Box™ suggested everything within our budget. We got just what we wanted: a single level, functional home with a fireplace,

underfloor heating, spa, multi-user bathroom, decks facing both ocean and sunset – and our firepit! It was quick and very easy.” The true genius of Box™ is just that: they take the stress out of the process. In fact, there’s a huge amount of psychology built into the Box™ modus operandi, which takes advantage of the fact that for most people, building your own home is a bit scary. First you book a Box Sprint™ session. This is basically the same as any first meeting for a build – except that, like Box, it comes neatly packaged. A team will visit your site, template your needs and workshop the results with you in a four-hour meeting with Box™ architect, builder, quantity surveyor and planner to develop a brief. You’ll then have a good idea of how your build will progress – and what it’ll probably cost. You could go with a classic home from the various designs that Box™ have on their shelves, or a full custom build. Even the custom builds use modular components such as posts, beams, wall and glazing panels to avoid waste – it’s good for the wallet and doesn’t, as they say, ‘cost the Earth’. Box™ champions ecologically-friendly buildings. Their builds always orient the house for the sun and usually utilise some form of thermal mass (like concrete floors) for passive heating. They over-insulate and double-glaze, and can advise on solar energy, rain collection and grey water use. We asked Tim if the whole modular thing made his job as architect a little bit boring. “Nope,” he
said. “There’s a certain ‘Box™ DNA’, a general aesthetic, sure – but out of around 240 homes we’ve built so far, only three were the same. There are many permutations according to client requirements, the site and other factors. And we’re open to all sorts of ideas.” Tim’s been to Palm Springs a few times with his family. He’s hugely inspired by mid-century design giants such as Joseph Eichler and William Kessler, and Box™ owes much to their legacy. It was a golden era of design which Box™ has fully embraced. Heck, even their logo looks like something out of The Jetsons! External post and beam structures, industrial sawtooth rooflines, full-height windows and doors, great indoor-outdoor flow – and firepits – all came from the fifties and sixties in California – and this type of design works particularly well here. “Box™ has always been about ‘accessible architecture’, which simply means being able to offer well-designed homes cheaper. Think IKEA for homes,” says CEO Dan Heyworth. “The next stage in the Box™ journey is fully embracing the potential of pre-fabrication. The key to this is simplifying architectural design, standardising building elements and systems and doing things at scale. Only then will the vision of truly accessible architecture be realised.” www.box.co.nz

Mischa is an 8-year-old Maltese cross best known for ‘driving’ The Country Park Express miniature train at Matakana Country Park on weekends and school holidays. Mischa happily meets and greets her guests before jumping up onto the driver’s seat, and waving as she comes around the corner toward the station.
10 year old local Matakana dog Rocky was recently cast to appear alongside New Zealand hiphop royalty, David Dallas, in his new music video for ‘Fit In’. The Australian Cattle dog cross was present on the set for three days of filming. Rocky loved all the attention especially getting to ride in the back of a car driven by David himself.

This is Cater, he’s a Welsh terrier and is five years young. He goes to work every day with his Dad, and follows him everywhere. He loves nothing more than hanging out the window of the van as they cruise to the next job site. In his precious time off he likes to go fishing.

Salty is a 9-year-old miniature Jack Russell. This cute pooch is the full-time deckhand on Johnny’s Water Taxis, the ferry which runs from Sandspit to Kawau each day. Although he’s getting on a bit, his many tricks and loveable nature makes Salty popular with all the locals, especially the kids.

ANIMAL HEALTH PHOTO
Your Animal Naturopath acknowledges that a pet offers qualities for which we yearn but seldom see these days - loyalty, trust, acceptance, lack of judgement, support, meaningful comfort – all aspects that take on new meanings in modern human relationships. Pets make you laugh despite yourself; they have a connection with nature that most of us have long forgotten. They behave as we would love to if we had the ability to abandon self and societyimposed restraints. The dog is a conversation waiting to happen, just ask anyone out walking their dog! Pets provide a deeply satisfying social relationship, essentially fulfilling most human needs in a subjective role.
JESSICA
WHITING
Many people idealise the animal – we admire strength and speed in the horse; the canary earns our envy singing to the heavens every day regardless of the weather; the tracking dog commands our respect. The loss and experience of grieving for our pets is unique and has a profound commonality that all pet owners understand and share. However, what happens when the humanpet relationship goes wrong? The parameters of physical and mental well-being of both human and animal are placed at risk. Pets used as our stress mops can find it all too much. Incompatibility issues arise, excuses are offered, both animal and owner suffer. Separation anxiety
or aggression arises in the dog, urine marking appears in the cat. Sedatives are often given to both. The role of your Animal Naturopath is to treat the underlying cause of your pets’ problems, whether physical or emotional, using herbal, homeopathic or other modalities, focusing on the individual pet’s needs. Even when treating serious illnesses, a team effort between Naturopath and the owner can have a rewarding outcome. Restoring harmony to the whole household, including the loved family pet, is a win-win for everyone. www.facebook.com/AnimalNaturalHealth

MASTER CRAFTSMAN
A PERFECT FIT WORDS
Twenty years ago, when a farrier visited his lifestyle block, Frans Jansen became enchanted with the art of shoeing horses. “I was just… wow! How do you do that? Can you show me? Questions, questions… he got so sick of me.” Frans immediately enrolled for a weekend course on becoming a farrier and has never looked back. It’s always a pleasure to meet a person who truly loves their work and, as Frans says, why wouldn’t he? “I work with amazing animals. I’m outdoors. My office can be six or seven different places in one day, and I get to meet really nice people.” It’s a very physical job and Frans acknowledges that he’ll probably have to slow down in the next five to ten years – but he’d never give up completely. Technique and understanding the moods of the animals are what have allowed Frans to stick with his passion for so long. “I can feel when a horse is happy or jangly – I listen to them by feel. When they are going to do something, they tell you.” During his spare time, Frans makes jewellery from shoeing nails and ornaments from old shoes, and he sells them online. Nice pocket money for now and possibly a retirement top-up in years to come, he reckons. His latest side project is a collection of stories about his father’s exploits as a ranger and huntsman in Holland. “He helped preserve the game and catch poachers. There is a town now where the forest used to be, and the street names are all based on the old names of the paddocks and hills. My father was the only one left who knew those names.” The skills of a farrier are much the same today as they have been for the last 2000 years and there is still the opportunity for apprentices to make a start in the industry. “But they don’t get exposure to that sort of work,” says Frans. “I’ve never had an apprentice but I’m working on my grandson – it would be nice to have someone take over the business.” 027 227 1776

COUNTRY RETREAT WORDS

Gavin Cook opens the wooden gates to the retreat, and excited barking erupts, filling the air with joy. A guest named Jester jumps up and down, desperately trying to see who has set foot into the holiday resort, his head bobbing in and out of sight and his tongue lolling out of his mouth. “You can’t make a dog look happy,” says Gavin with a modest grin. He and his wife Helen have run the ‘Country Retreat for Cats and Dogs’, just south of Warkworth, since 2014 and they love it. “It’s a way of life, not a business,” explains Gavin. Each guest arrives with a unique personality, be it cuddly, cheeky, relaxed or shy. Regardless, every guest departs looking the same; lively and content. Sleeping 34 dogs and 20 cats, the retreat offers insulated, spacious kennels for the dogs, who are treated to three walks a day, hearty meals, and playtime in either a sheltered or open area. On the more relaxed side, cats enjoy their own three-storey ‘condos’ including a scratching pole and bed. The husband and wife team care for their guests as if they were their own, so the retreat is always booked out with four-legged friends. Or in the words of Mr and Mrs Cook, “our fourlegged family.” www.countryretreat.kiwi

ANZAC DAY Students of Matakana School will gather at the Matakana War Memorial on 11.15am Thursday April 13th to decorate the Memorial in preparation for 2017 ANZAC Day. Of special interest will be the ex-pupils of the school who enlisted in the First World War. Several years ago the principal of Matakana School, Darrel Goosen, retrieved from the school archives a c1920s painting which recorded the names of the ex-pupils who enlisted in the First World War. This painting will be the centre of the pupil learning experience during the decoration of the War Memorial, and a copy will remain on display during the 2017 ANZAC week. Matakana School was founded in 1862 and has a long history of remembering the servicemen of this area who served our country. An ANZAC service will be held at the Matakana War Memorial 10am Tuesday 25th April. The program this year is full of drama and music, and there’ll be something for all the family to enjoy as we remember our ANZAC heroes. All are welcome. BRICK BAY FOLLY WORDS

HARTNETT
Brick Bay has an ever-changing landscape, most recently with the completion of the 2017 Folly, Te Takitaki. The winning team this year is a group of four young architectural graduates, Tom Dobinson and George Grieve from Patterson Associates, and Sophie Edwards and Jayne Kersten from Jasmax. The team had previously studied together at Victoria University of Wellington.
hard packed, natural clay mounds. The winning team imagined that the folly could take inspiration from a Māori palisade, a fence that assisted in the fortification of a key piece of land. While such fences had the practical task of defining inside and outside, they would often be comprised of sculpted objects. The folly was opened with a ceremonial blessing with Kaumatua from Ngati Manuhiri.
A folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose, or of such extravagant appearance that it transcends the range of garden ornaments usually associated with the class of buildings to which it belongs. In this context Te Takitaki is the third avant garde folly to be sited at Brick Bay. It’s located on a high vantage point guarding last year’s winning project, Daughter of the Swamp.
The philosophy of the project is to support young and emerging New Zealand architects who have recently graduated, and/or students in an accredited New Zealand architecture programme. They’re encouraged to explore the intersections between architecture and sculpture and experiment with increasing overlaps in references, concepts and techniques between the two disciplines. The winning entry received an overall $35,000 grant towards realising the proposed project. This project is the culmination of passionate, disciplined creatives and generous sponsors with clarity and vision. Big thanks to Resene, Fletchers, Brick Bay Sculpture Trust and Architecture New Zealand. We look forward to next year’s entries as the legacy of the past three winning follies will no doubt continue to inspire the next generation of forward-thinking, avant-garde New Zealand architects.
The architectural form consists of an organic, curved and fortified wall, which measures eight metres by ten metres. The height of the structure ranges from two and a half metres up to four metres at the highest point, as it is sited on a sloping hillside. It is constructed from orange-stained, rough-sawn timber which is threaded in and out of a row of reinforcing steel in a woven configuration. The interior of the folly is landscaped using native plants, a gravel entrance and pathway, juxtaposed with sculpturally formed,

BY CLAIRE DONALDSON
Elon Musk is the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. At age 12 he wrote a video game, progressed to maps and business directories, then revolutionised online business with PayPal. His sale of PayPal to EBay for roughly $250 million bankrolled interests in space and green technology.
A new generation of entrepreneurs is sparking another cultural upheaval through technology. They are among the Upstarts, idiosyncratic founders with limitless drive and self-confidence. Young, hungry and brilliant, they’re rewriting the traditional rules of business, changing our dayto-day lives but often sidestepping serious ethical and legal obstacles in the process.
Claire takes us on a journey of wonderful experiences as she travels around New Zealand bringing fabulous events to life. There are hundreds of photos to inspire your event, be it birthdays, weddings, dinner parties, corporate soirées or a promotional launch. This is a gorgeous book to inspire a special celebration.
