NATIONAL TRAGEDY WITH LOCAL CONNECTIONS WORDS
On April 10, it will be fifty years since the great inter-island ferry, Wahine, sank in Wellington harbour. Cyclone Giselle was wreaking havoc in the capital, with recorded wind gusts of up to 275 kilometres per hour. Many civilian boats helped rescue survivors who were forced to leap from the sinking ship into 15 metre waves, but despite their valiant efforts, 51 lives were lost. One boat involved was a 12 metre wooden motor sailer named Nereides. She’s now 92 years old, and is currently owned by Mark Lever of Matakana. Mark heard of her involvement in the Wahine disaster and decided to find out all he could. He was amazed to find that a friend of his, Nicole Ward (owner of Green With Envy) had two family members on his boat that day: her uncle, Peter Ward, who was only 12 years old, and her grandmother, Joan.

Junction Mag got in touch with Peter, who was very happy to hear from us. At Mark’s invitation, he travelled up to Nereides’ mooring at Sandspit Marina, and motored with Mark over to Kawau Island. He had some stirring yarns to tell about that terrible day. At the time, the Nereides was owned by Allan Pain, a close friend of the Ward family. Peter and his mother Joan had come to the Port Nicholson Yacht Club early that morning to help Allan secure the boat against the storm. They knew Wahine was on the rocks but, like everyone else, thought she was stable. Suddenly they heard on the radio that the huge ship was sinking and assistance was urgently needed. “The water seemed quite calm inside the harbour, so we motored out to see if we could help,” Peter

recalled. “Wahine was at the harbour mouth, and it was only then we realised that the swell in Cook Strait was absolutely enormous. All the other boats had gone in and we were about to join them when we saw three heads in the water, going over the next wave. We were terrified, but we knew we had to try and save them.” Kathryn Dallas (now Kath Henderson), a 19year old student from Canterbury, Whangarei farmhand Paul Field, 16, and Cambridge farmer Brian Townend, 55, were at the end of their strength when they saw Nereides coming for them. Kath had been eating sandwiches and singing ‘Row, row, row your boat,’ with other passengers in the ship’s lounge when they heard – on someone’s radio, not from the crew – that the

ship was being abandoned. By the time they’d staggered up onto the rapidly tilting deck in their orange lifejackets it was like a scene from a horror movie, with people sliding down the deck through the railings into the boiling seas. Kath, Brian and Paul had hung on to a life-ring in the ice-cold, four-storey waves for hours. They’d drifted over seven kilometres and if Nereides had not arrived, they would certainly have drowned. Brian encouraged the teenagers, as they were all nearly done in. “To this day, I have no idea how we got them into the boat,” says Peter. They finally managed it, but tragically, Brian Townend died before they got back to harbour. When Peter saw Nereides again at the Sandspit Yacht Club, it was a momentous occasion. “She’s changed a fair bit since then,” he said. He poked happily about the boat refreshing his memory, and he and Mark compared photos. Both had brought their copies of ‘The Wahine Disaster’ by Max Lambert, and Mark was fascinated to hear Peter’s story. Nereides, however, had more to tell. Mark discovered she was a patrol boat in Wellington during WWII, with a machine gun mounted on her bow. Trevor Hobman, a teenage semaphorist at the time, confirmed he’d spent many hours on board, hunting mines, submarines, Germans and Japanese in the harbour. “I suppose it was quite lucky we didn’t find any,” he admitted. The old boat needs constant work, most of which Mark does himself. He learned woodworking skills from his grandfather, who made furniture, and from online tutorials. His aim is to bring her back to ‘a better version of her original self,’ and he’s not far off. If Nereides is destined for more adrenaline-filled adventures in future, Mark will definitely be on board.

Note: A substantial anniversary event for the Wahine disaster occurs in Wellington in April. Peter and his wife Maggie plan to meet Kath Henderson there, with whom they reconnected ten years ago via a documentary by David Lomas. www.wahine50.org.nz

MATT AND NATASHA CRAIG – PURSUING PASSIONS WORDS
Sometimes the stuff you are passionate about can make you do crazy things. Like packing up your house and young family and moving to the jungles of Costa Rica. Natasha Craig and her Kiwi husband Matt did just that in 2008, just before the Global Financial Crisis hit. They swapped their office clothes for board shorts and bikinis, quitting their day jobs in the U.S.A. to become surf instructors in the middle of nowhere. “I said to Matt: Let’s do something different,” says Natasha. “Matt was a sailmaker by trade and I knew he yearned to return to the ocean. He replied: Okay!” Six weeks after making the decision to move, the couple were running Point Break Surf School in Playa Grande, Costa Rica. For the next five years

they followed their passions: living by the ocean, spending more time with their kids, even learning a little Spanish. “It was everything we dreamed of and more,” says Natasha. “We love adventure and that is exactly what we got.” Matt recalls how they would “hand-cut a path through the jungle down to the beach, so we could drive (customers) the last kilometre or so through this trail in the bush,” says Matt. “We would come out on a secluded beach with no one else around, and they’d be like Whoa!” However, following your dreams isn’t always easy. Natasha was born profoundly deaf, and the doctors told her mother to send her away to an Institution for the deaf.
Housed in the historic Kawau Boating Club, Bon Accord Bar & Bistro is open to the public, fully licensed (incl off-license) and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love our location and do our best to do Kawau Island proud. We sell hot coffee, fresh baking, petrol, diesel, ice (no salt), bait and general store items. Get there in your own boat, or catch a ferry from Sandspit.
“Luckily, my mom refused and found a program in New York where they were putting hearing aids on deaf babies and teaching them to speak,” recalls Natasha. “For the first five years of my life, my mom sat with me every day and taught me.” She says that school was easy compared to finding a job, due to her disability. “My education was in marketing and business, and it was difficult to convince employers to hire me over someone who could talk on the phone,” she says. “I knew I had to create my own line of work. After getting my Masters in Business Administration from the University of Oregon, a friend of mine and I started an online portal for watersports.” “An essential part of being human is communication. and the internet, being deaf could be isolating and challenging because of communication difficulties. Little things like not being able to make phone calls or watch movies became big things. That’s why I turned to running and adventure.” After their five years in Costa Rica the adventure drifted towards another paradise: New Zealand. “Our kids were getting older and had interests outside of the beach. We wanted to move to a place where we could become an integral part of the community. Matakana ended up being the perfect place for us,” says Natasha. They started Matakana Beach Outfitters in 2013, selling wetsuits, stand-up paddleboards and surf boards, and inspiring budding paddlers and surfers through their lessons. In 2016, they moved up the road and expanded their product range to become Summer Sessions. They are involved with fundraising and junior lifesaving at the Omaha Surf Club. “This summer, we staged a beach triathlon to help raise money and it was really well received.” Both Matt and Natasha are eager to compete when they get the chance and recently Matt came back from the Surf Life Saving Nationals in Gisborne, where he earned silver in the beach flags and bronze in the board, for Masters in 40-44 range. He also medaled in several relays with the Omaha Surf Club. “Finally, last year he competed in the World Masters Games for Surf Life Saving and did really well, where he won several medals, including a gold in the 2km beach sprint and silver in the board race in the masters division.” says Natasha. “Our focus is to help people in our community stay connected to the water by whatever means,” says Natasha. “Time in the water is a balm to the soul – an invitation to be in the moment.” So now that Matt and Natasha have us all hooked on stand up paddleboarding, what’s the next craze? “We’re looking at foilboarding,” she says. “We had a go on a foil last week and loved it.…so stay tuned.” www.summersessions.co.nz 44 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana

FIG'N DELICIOUS
At the Fig’n Delicious orchard in Mangawhai there are 300 trees to harvest. Figs do not ripen off the tree so they have to be picked each day. Once picked, they stop producing the sugars that make them so sweet and delectable to eat. The pickers get out into the orchard early to create a presence to scare birds off. A fig should be cut with secateurs at the stem where it connects to the branch rather than torn by hand. This protects the soft outer layer of the fig from damage. It is

important that trees are free of rotting and over ripe figs to keep the bees at bay. At Fig’n Delicious orchards there is a large group of ducks keen to clean up any dropped fruit. Selecting a ripened fig is an art form and one that comes with experience. As a deepening and rosy colour or a sagging stem have not shown to be good indicators, it is more reliable to go by touch. The softness of the fig will tell the picker if the sugars are present. Splits may appear on a fig
and are an indicator of maturation and a sign that they are bursting with sugars and ready to eat. A spongy feel indicates ripening has yet to occur and that fig should be left on the tree for the next day or two. Figs have a short shelf life and need to be kept in the refrigerator and eaten within 2-3 days of harvest. www.figndelicious.co.nz 09 431 5127

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE AT MATAVINO WINES WORDS
‘It’s back to the future wine making,’ laughs Jim Hight. I’ve just sampled his intriguing 2017 Chardonnay that was aged in a clay amphora that Matavino uses in conjunction with oak barrels. The clay amphorae really set Matavino apart and Jim is excited about the possibilities they offer. ‘In Greek and Roman times, they used to bury the amphora in the ground, throw everything in, put a layer of olive oil on top and pray. I’m trying to get back to basics and have less intervention, just let nature do its thing and the allow the fruit to express itself.’ Jim’s wine maker, Warren Knudsen (ex Mahurangi River), is excited by the potential of the clay pot, especially with the Barbera grapes which he’s not worked with before.
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
Matavino is a small, young vineyard but it produces five varieties of wine, with a strong emphasis on Italian reds. The Barbera variety is the current star of the crop and Jim is looking at doubling up on that and the Nebbiolo variety. Dolcetto is his third Italian red, and the whites are represented by the French – Chardonnay and Viognier. The amphora does impart a flavour that is quite different from wooden barrels but one that Jim struggles to describe. ‘It’s more natural and there’s no oak flavour so more emphasis on the fruit.’ Jim has a real passion for Italy and its wines, and especially likes the idea of matching those varieties, along with the French whites, with local
food. Food, wine and good company are what it is all about. It’s great fun to go along and see the amphorae in action and sample the wines. Jim is developing the outdoor area next to the cellar so that you can enjoy the wine while looking out across the vines. He’s hoping to offer small food platters soon, in keeping with his philosophy of wine and food going together. The Matavino Cellar Door is open 11am to 5pm, Saturdays and Sundays, from Labour Weekend until Easter, or by phoning 021 62 11 24 to arrange an appointment. www.matavino.co.nz

BRICK BAY’S LAND OF PLENTY
As you meander down the winding driveway to Brick Bay you’ll notice the spectacular vistas and beauty of the landscape, but this is more than just aesthetically pleasing scenery. The 200 acre property produces not only wine, but olive oil, honey, free range lamb and a multitude of ingredients for The Glass House restaurant. The 4.5 hectare sustainably accredited vineyard produces all the fruit for Brick Bay Wines. Now well known for their acclaimed Pinot Gris, the Didsbury family decided to plant grape vines back in 1995 and have been producing a tightly focussed selection of wines ever since. The soil is a clay loam which was used in the 1800s to
16
make bricks and was the catalyst for one of the pioneering local industries with a brick factory situated at the bay, hence the name ‘Brick Bay’. Each vine is carefully tended by hand by the hard working viticultural team throughout its annual cycle and Brian, the farm and vineyard manager, ensures that quality grapes make it through to harvest. This is no easy task with the recent tropical cyclones! Then the call goes out to staff, friends, and locals to come and join the grape harvest. You can’t beat a day in the vines under the sun's golden rays, grass between your toes with the friendly chatter of fellow pickers. As each variety is harvested, the chilled fruit is
transported to West Brook Winery in Waimauku who have made Brick Bay wine with passion since 1998. The finished products - Rosé, Pinot Gris, Pharos, Martello Rock and soon the latest wine addition, Chardonnay, are all available at The Glass House and online. What started as a small interest in beekeeping has become a staple product in the Brick Bay offering. With sixteen hives now situated on the land surrounded by kanuka, manuka, kowhai, pohutukawa as well as nearby wildflower plantings, lavender, rosemary, lilies, lotus, clover and borage, the bees have a rich source for their nectar foraging.
The owners, Richard and Christine Didsbury, collect the honey straight from the hives which is then minimally filtered to give a real taste of the Brick Bay terroir, and decanted into jars ready for sale or incorporation into a restaurant dish. Arguably the olive trees have one of the best vantage points on the property, situated just to the right as you wind down the driveway with views overlooking The Glass House and out to Kawau Bay. The first trees were planted 25 years ago, a block of Spanish olive trees followed by two further blocks of Italian varieties in 2003 and 2010. Hand-picked once optimally ripened in late April to early May, the olives are then cold pressed locally and oil transported back to Brick Bay ready for hand bottling. With a multitude of fruit and nut trees dotted around the property keeping a track of the harvest calendar is imperative. There are the trusted favourites such as lemons, limes, figs, and pears but also some more unusual additions, such as giant ponderosa lemons and black walnuts - great for pickling and bottling. Chestnuts once fallen from the tree will be collected and burrs removed, to then be incorporated into a delicious chestnut pudding, the perfect autumn treat.
After experimenting over the years with angora goats and cattle, the farm has settled on raising sheep, integrating southdown stock into their breeding ewes. The lamb produced has the subtle influence of the sea breezes, said to season the meat, and the sheep literally tread more gently on the land itself, preventing soil compaction and degradation. The kitchen garden completes the stable with vegetables, herbs and edible flowers in abundance. Annett (Farm and Vineyard Forewoman) and Kelly (Chef de partie) work together to make sure that seasonal produce is planted and harvested at the optimum time, then incorporated into the ever-changing Glass House menu. The seasonal bruschetta is a great stage for in-season figs and tomatoes while the Asian vegetables and fragrant herbs produce consistently all year round to sustain the kitchen. Next time you visit Brick Bay and are contemplating the beauty of the surroundings, take a moment to also observe the generous bounty of this diverse landscape. WINE HARVEST IN MATAKANA WORDS
As the grape harvest approaches, a number of factors come into play before the decision to pick is made. The wine style, fruit ripeness (measured by brix (sugar), Ta/pH (acidity), and flavour) along with the condition of the fruit and the weather forecast are all considered. There is no one ideal moment to pick. The factors above influence every winegrower differently and that is a critical part of what makes each Matakana wine unique.

Because of the relatively small size, the rolling hills, and wide mix of grape varieties (11 whites and 17 reds) in Matakana there is only one option and that is to harvest by hand.
winery for making this year’s wine.
The teams of vineyard staff, winemakers, contract crews and backpackers that you will see working through the local vineyards over the next number of weeks have possibly the most crucial job of the entire harvest – ensuring that fruit of only the best quality is harvested and delivered to the
Judicious harvesting can be a slow process, but in a challenging year it is the final and most critical quality control before the grapes start their journey to becoming wine.

Fruit that is not sufficiently ripe will be excluded; as is fruit that has split, or has rot caused by high rainfall and humidity.
Once the fruit arrives at the winery there are two
very distinct winemaking protocols that may be used. White wine (from white grapes) and rosé (from red grapes) winemaking starts with the juice being separated from the skins of the grapes through a grape press. Pressing the fruit against a screen either inside a horizontal tank press, or in a vertical basket press, lets the juice flow without letting skins or seeds through. Cooling of the juice and settling for 12 to 72 hours encourages the pulp/juice solids that come from the press, to settle and compact in the bottom of a tank, then the clear juice can be pumped (racked) off. At this point the clean juice is suitable for fermentation – the natural process where specific alcohol tolerant yeasts consume sugar and produce alcohol. It is this which releases and converts flavour precursors in the juice into the fabulous array of aromas and flavours that we find in wine. Fermentation for white and rosé wines takes place in either temperature controlled stainless steel tanks (at a relatively cool 14-20ºc) or in oak barrels. Red wine winemaking is significantly different in that the juice is not separated from the skins until after the fermentation has taken place. The warmer (25-32ºc) temperatures, combined with regular mixing of the skins and fermenting juice (must) extracts colour, structure, and flavour from the skins (and seeds). The pressing of the wine from the skins usually only occurs once all of the sugar has been fermented into alcohol. It is not until all wines, white, red, and rosé have finished fermenting and started their maturation process towards future bottling, that harvest can be truly considered finished. www.matakanawine.co.nz

There's something special about buying local you know your produce has been grown or made, with love, care and passion. You get exactly that from local beekeeper William Titford, who started Puhoi Bushman Honey because of his love for bees. After working in commercial beekeeping companies for six years, he noticed it was the norm for up to 20% of a hives population to die each year and from his experience having lived on farms for most of his life, he knew it could be done better. William started learning about selling honey commercially and got busy as a bee! He registering as a company, designed modern labels and got himself a few hives to kick things off. Puhoi Bushman Honey is harvested in a unique way, "I try to look after the bees because I know if we look after them, they will look after us," says William. "I often spend more time with each hive and more often than what is 'necessary' according to bigger beekeeping companies." His honey is harvested in much smaller batches meaning, less disruption to the bees. He also prefers not to wear gloves, "I love picking up the frame and have the bees crawl over my hands, it's such a great way to connect with them," says William. Beekeeping gloves are thick and bulky, making it easy to accidently squash and kill
bees. "No gloves is the best way to have mutual respect with the bees, they know I'm not afraid. This allows them to carry on producing delicious honey," he says. Puhoi Bushman Honey is a 'keeper'! Make sure you head to the Puhoi Village Market on the last

HARVESTING CLAY AT MORRIS & JAMES
Ask any of the team at Morris & James about their unique Matakana clay, and they would say there’s something very special about working with a natural medium harvested right where you work. Although it’s well known that the pottery harvests its own clay, there’s a lot more to this process than you might think.
evenly throughout the final product. The result? A beautiful sticky terracotta clay, that is robust and perfect for making large hand-thrown pots and ceramics. www.morrisandjames.co.nz
It all starts with a large clay deposit adjacent to the pottery. Every four to five years the raw clay is dug from the quarry face and spread out onto a paddock. The clay is turned over and left to face the elements, letting nature break the clay down into smaller parts. Every summer, the top layer of clay in the paddock is rotary hoed to break it down even more before it’s collected and placed into the on-site storage facility for further processing. This stores up to 400 tons of dried clay, about three years worth of pots and other ceramics. Crushing rollers are set-up in the storage shed to refine the clay into a finer dry powder. Black sand is added to the dry mixture, to help reduce shrinkage, which means fewer cracks in the final items created with the clay. Lastly, the dry clay mixture is transported to the pottery factory where it is reconstituted with water in a trough mixer. High speed rollers help refine and smooth the wet clay before it passes through a de-airing extruder to remove any air bubbles, and form clay blocks for easy storage. The clay is wrapped and stored for three weeks to allow moisture to penetrate

SCULPTUREUM’S BIG CRUSH WORDS
Since Anthony and Sandra Grant opened the gates to Sculptureum in Matakana almost a year ago, the galleries and gardens have been the talk of the town. Very soon, however, their latest vintage will be on everyone’s lips. “During the establishment of the art facilities, the vineyard was left to lie dormant,” says Sculptureum’s new viticulturist, Tina Hutchinson. “This year’s crop will be the first since 2015.” The carer of the vines learned her trade under the tutelage of the biodynamic guru Margaret Boswell. Now Tina is slowly but surely applying those principles to the picturesque boutique Matakana vineyard. The low-yielding, grape-laden vines, over which two steel “Guards” stand sentinel, are harvested from mid March through to late April. This season, the team at Sculptureum is keen to introduce

over five years. “We always say the house was designed and built for the previous creative owners, but made for us”. Their style and collection of antiques and art has evolved over many years restoring villas, the transition from historic to new has been made seamlessly.
“One of my favourite details is the kitchen cabinets and splashback, made from commercial security glass,” says Sally. The square grid that runs through the glass may have been a nightmare for the cabinetmaker to install, but the results add another layer of texture, character and fun to the space. “Their simplicity belies their complexity!” says Sally. The architectural design of Duck Creek is difficult to define but easy to love. Straight clean lines and industrial materials, tick all the modernist boxes, but that doesn’t quite do justice to the character and warmth that radiates throughout. It could fit in just as well, in California, in Tuscany or France. Designed by architect David Ponting and built from tilt precast concrete with rusty iron details and blonded cedar beams, the use of eclectic materials continues through to the furniture. This includes the bespoke sideboards and shelving constructed out of beautifully aged copper, that came from a historic building in Auckland. The house opens onto the surrounding landscape through wide doorways, blurring the lines between inside and out. Each opening frames a different view: from the kitchen the walled garden overflows with herbs, citrus and ornamentals; from the dining room the olive grove and 90-year-old plum tree, a living monument to the

property’s history. However, the most spectacular views are from the tower, constructed from poured concrete, with a layer of exposed aggregate visible inside and out. Each of the three flights open onto bedrooms for visiting friends and family, and overlook the gardens, neighbouring dairy farms and vineyards. “We joined the dots with the landscaping,” says Sally. “Along with the potager garden, we added camellia hedging, doubled the orchards and vegetable gardens, and built the greenhouse.” The gardens are another example of the generosity of the place – providing all the produce they need across the seasons. The couple do all the groundwork, including the lawns. “Sally starts at one end on the ride on, and I do the details with the lawn mower, we meet somewhere in the middle after about twelve hours.” It’s a labour of love, and as Derek says: “You don’t ever really retire, you just start new projects.” www.duckcreekoliveoil.co.nz

HOME PLAYGROUND INSPIRATION
BOAT SANDPIT: JOULE FAMILY “We picked up a boat for $100 from Buy and Sell Warkworth and just added a trailer load of sand and a pirate flag. It was in good condition and so we actually had to put a hole in the bottom to allow the water to escape when it rains. The kids play out there together, peacefully for hours in all weather and love it,” says mum Victoria.
THE FORT: JOULE FAMILY “We have a shortage of trees on the property and so I thought we could build this fort on stilts. Then of course you would need a drawbridge,” says dad Rhys, who built this for his kids out of old pallets for around $270. The kids dress up and play knights and warrior princesses to defend it! “It’s a great lookout; the kids can spot visitors approaching from miles away!”
FLYING FOX: POWELL FAMILY “Our backyard bushland seemed to lend itself to a Flying Fox. It took a couple of days to tension the wire and build the stairs,” says dad Craig. “All of the parts were donated or acquired for free.” Just our time, tools and energy were required. “The Flying Fox is a challenge for first timers overcoming their fear of heights and the ‘safety mattress’ is tied to the tree at the end.”
MUDSLIDE: RIGBY FAMILY “When the digger was here digging the pond I thought we should have a mudslide into the little pond,” says Caleb aged 9. “It didn’t take long as the digger was already here. Maybe 10 mins for the digger then we soaked it with water from the pump and smoothed it out. I have a lot of fun on it with my friends. It's impossible not to get dirty on it, that's what I like about it.”
SPINNER: POWELL FAMILY “The spinning platform came later when our old trailer succumbed to rust and I converted the axle into the ground and added a plywood platform,” says Craig, who loves any practical challenge that he can set his creative mind to. "The Spinner took a couple of days to make, once the axle was removed from the trailer."

CLIMBING WALL: HADFIELD FAMILY “We had to get creative when making the boys bunk beds, as space is at a premium in our house,” says mum Melanie. “The climbing holds were such a hit that we decided to expand!” “Our trees weren’t big enough to climb on,” says Leif aged 5, so they constructed their own indoor wall. “As they get older we have plans to extend it up to the loft and create a kid hang out zone up there.”

Later in the year the Group will hold its annual Mudslide event, which also includes a mud run, knife throwing, archery, air rifle shooting and
There are also local Scout groups in Kaiwaka and Puhoi, while the Wellsford Group is looking for new leaders to get it back up and running again this year. www.scouts.org.nz

KIDS
MANGAWHAI SKATE LESSONS
Established in January 2015, Mangawhai Skates was simply trying to get the kids of Mangawhai skating their local, albeit, intimidating skatepark. What started out as a small, after work project proved to be something that the community of Mangawhai needed. The park is now constantly full of kids and adults all pushing to better their skills on a skateboard while Mangawhai Skates is still going strong, helping to bring more and more people to the skatepark. “Together with our students, we are simply trying to work out how to ride a plank of wood with 4 wheels on it”.

SCHOOL REBUILDING At the end of Term Two the Senior students at Warkworth Primary school will be moving to the Junior Campus until the remodeling of the Senior Campus is complete. The old senior classrooms will be dismantled to make way for a new innovative learning environment. The 2018 Year 6 students will be at secondary school when the new learning environment is finished, which is quite disappointing. To quote Lochlan Reid, a Year 6 student who is very interested in this matter. “Because of the way jobs are heading we are going to need to learn differently. We are now seeing companies, like Spark, instead of a ‘boss and workers model’, they work together more collaboratively”. The building process should take approximately one year.

BLUES VISIT WARKWORTH
On Thursday 1 March, we enjoyed an exciting event at the Mahurangi College pool. We encourage swimming at our school so we can be safe and healthy. It was a big day.
Warkworth School has various exciting events throughout the year and two of the students’ favourites are Fiesta and Warkworth Idol. The Annual Fiesta was on 23 March.
Last month, some of the Auckland Blues Super Rugby team visited Warkworth School.
The main event was the Baddock Cup. After a close 100m race, Cleo Carmichael was crowned the winner in 1.26.72m.
“Warkworth Idol is a chance for our students to show their performance abilities and have new experiences,” said Mr Ben Bradley when asked why he gives so much time towards this.
Every year Mrs Callender, our sports co-ordinator, tries to make our sports days more efficient. This year a special code was written on our hands which helped organise races quickly. We all enjoyed an awesome day.
There are five categories students can be involved in; Junior Performance, Solo Instrument, Solo/Duo Singing, Band/Groups and Dancing. Everyone is working hard to get into the final on 11 April
Communities 5 and 6 were lucky enough to experience playing rugby-related games with the players and each student was given a Blues flag. The Blues were in Warkworth for their game against the Hurricanes, which they unfortunately lost. All in all, the students had a great day and a lot of fun! The school journalists interviewed the five rugby players and you can read the interviews on the Warkworth School Website. www.warkworth.school.nz

FORTITUDE KIDS
Fortitude was born from the desire to ‘pull up your sleeves’ and donate time by helping out in some small way. Their first project was to create activity boxes for children who were in one of the isolation wards at Starship Children’s Hospital. Due to their low immunity these children do not get the opportunity or the freedom to go out of their rooms and play with other children or to use the resources that the hospital offers. They are at risk of being exposed to bacteria and germs that could prove harmful to them whilst they are
undergoing treatment.
their room and a box of their very own to keep.
Fortitude have been creating homemade gift cards and selling these through a local gift store, with all of the proceeds going directly towards the making of these boxes. Each of the Fortitude Boxes are filled with activity books, colouring books, miniature board games, jumbo cards, art books, felt tips, colouring pencils, stamps, notebooks, pens and pencils, so each child can have a little ray of sunshine delivered straight to
“Fortitude means strength and courage and we believe these kids are so brave for enduring the experiences they do on a daily basis... we feel so privileged to be able to create something for them that will make them smile, feel special, encouraged and praised for their resilience,” says founder Reba. fortitude.kids@gmail.com www.instagram.com/fortitude.kids
PARENT PORT - A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES WITH PRESCHOOLERS WORDS
CARLIE

BURTON
There’s nothing like those early days when your baby is born. Every moment is precious and it is a real bonding time as you get to know a brand new little family member. It can also be a really challenging time, getting through the week isn’t easy when you aren’t even sure what day of the week it is. New parents are also often isolated and need emotional support as they adjust to a whole new way of life. Parent Port North was first established by Homebuilders in 1997 to help parents and caregivers get through those first few years. It is a free service that offers practical assistance and support to new parents by helping with childcare, light housework, washing, and cooking. Parent Port’s services cover a wide area from Puhoi all the way to Paparoa on south side of the Brenderwyns. They are a not-for-profit community organisation, funded by various community schemes including Foundation North, COGS, Grassroots Auckland Giving, the Lotteries Grant Board and the Sir Logan Campbell Estate. Co-ordinator Di Julian has been involved with Parent Port for over eight years and organises the funding applications as well as working hands on with families in her area. “What I love about Parent Port is that we are not means tested and we don’t have a huge amount of paperwork, so we can help anyone who needs support. All they need to do is call us and we can set everything up for them in a few minutes.” All of the Parent Port helpers are police checked and are very experienced. Every family with children under five is entitled to 12 hours of free assistance so if you have to attend appointments, need to shop, or just need a rest, give them a call today. 09 425 9357 parentportnorth@gmail.com www.parentportnorth.com

TWO GREAT WALKS IN 24 HOURS WORDS
CARLIE
BLANCHETT
BURTON
Ten years ago Mark Macky and his friend Ken Brophy were having a BBQ when they came up with a truly epic idea. “We were talking about Sir Edmund Hillary, and what a kiwi legend he was", Mark remembers. “What really stuck with me was that he had said, ‘Don’t build memorials, just continue on with my work in Nepal’. So we decided to raise money for the Himalayan Trust and came up with a plan to climb the summits of Taranaki, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, all in 24 hours.” Mark and Ken have done quite a few 24 hour challenges since then, all revolving around hiking and climbing, and set among the NZ mountains and forests that Sir Ed loved. They have also travelled to Nepal to hike the Khumbu and see firsthand, the work of the Himalayan Trust. Last month Mark, Ken, Gary Diprose (from Springboard) and six others walked both the Routeburn and Caples tracks in 24 hours, to mark the 65th anniversary since that first Everest ascent. This unbelievable challenge is normally a 5+ day hike. They walked through the night by the light of their head torches and through the next day. It took them 21 hours with only four short breaks, including Mark’s 15-minute dawn snooze on the hard deck of the Lake Howden Hut. It was an amazing effort for a wonderful cause. All the funds raised go directly to the Himalayan Trust who are rebuilding schools and hospitals following the 2015 earthquake. Mark and Ken haven’t finished their challenges yet as 2019 would have been Sir Ed’s 100th birthday and they are planning another event. Their goal is to raise $100,000 for the Himalayan Trust and they are halfway there. Show your support by donating at their Give A Little page. www.givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/two-great-walks-in-24-hours
LEAVE THE QUEUING TO EVERYONE ELSE In an area you may not have considered when looking around the greater Matakana area, you will be genuinely impressed with the enviable privacy and outlook from this elevated location on the Auckland side of Warkworth. Set on park like grounds of just under one hectare, the Malcolm Walker designed home offers a rare mix of contemporary finishes and real warmth. With the quality and high-level finishing of this three bedroom architectural home on show as soon as you arrive. The 277m2 home enjoys architectural highlights with a stylish mix of textured concrete, soaring ceilings of Alaskan cedar and warm Matai timber flooring. With most of us needing to keep some connection to Auckland, the beauty of this location lies in a local secret; a short cut leading directly to the highway. So leave the queues and traffic lights to everyone else and keep mum about how lucky you are to hop on and off before the traffic builds and the nerves fray. Don’t let this be the one that got away, give Dahnie or Jenni a call and let us know when you would like to view. With such a quality contemporary home in this location, we know this property delivers a punch for a price that will surprise you. LIVING
LOCAL LIVING ORAL HYGIENE IN KIDS Kiwi families are being urged to ‘’Switch to Water’’ as the New Zealand Dental Association attempts to halt tooth decay. With 35,000 children requiring dental extractions due to tooth decay annually, we need to highlight and tackle this problem. There is a lot of truth to the parental adage that there is plenty of water in the tap. Frequent intake of sugary drinks (and food) can lead to frequent acid attacks and eventual loss of tooth enamel. Switching sugary drinks to water can switch off tooth decay, and switch on weight loss, health benefits and saving money.
ETHIQUE
In addition, fluoride and fissure sealants can be beneficial in the long-term prevention of tooth decay.
Ethique creates gorgeous solid body butter blocks, cleansing bars, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants and body wash bars that are sustainably sourced, vegan, biodegradable and eco-friendly.
Consult your dentist or dental therapist if you think this would be beneficial for your children.
The New Zealand-made skin, hair, and body care brand uses essential oils and fresh ingredients to create products that are 100% compostable, plastic free, cruelty free, and palm oil free. For those who love to take care of themselves and take care of the planet.

MY PICTURES AFTER THE STORM
IMPOSSIBLE INVENTIONS: IDEAS THAT SHOULDN'T WORK
BY ERIC VEILLÉ A gust of wind, an elephant, a dive bomb, a spell: this funky “before and after” book will have you chuckling! What happens to a lion after the storm? His mane is swept into a dishevelled mess. What becomes of a pear after an elephant passes by? Pear jam! A frog after a spell? A prince. And the room after a battle? A big mess! Comical illustrations, witty wordplay, and new rhymes and jokes to find with each re-reading.
BY GECKO PRESS TITLES This book collects ancient and modern inventions. Some are revolutionary, others comical, others simply impossible. But each testifies to the extraordinary imagination of its inventor. You'll find a flying bicycle, a bubble telegraph, passenger clouds and passenger birds, mechanical chess players, a water clock, a concentration hood, and many more incredible ideas.
MARLBOROUGH MAN BY ALLAN SCOTT WITH ERIC ARNOLD The true story of the rise of Marlborough and NZ Sauvignon Blanc, told by one of its pioneers, winemaker Allan Scott, from the planting of the first vines to the global success of New Zealand's billion-dollar sauvignon blanc industry, is also the very personal story of winemaker Allan Scott. With a rich photographic archive and new photography from award winning photographer Patrick Reynold, this is a fine memoir with real body and taste.

WOMEN IN WARTIME
Over 550 New Zealand nurses served with the Expeditionary Forces during World War One. 193 Women served with the New Zealand Volunteer Sisterhood and many thousands of women in New Zealand stepped into the roles left by their departing husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.
The women left behind contributed to the war effort, by looking after business, farms and families. Raising funds, sending care packages and provided emotional support. Their contribution was immense, virtually unmeasurable and often forgotten.
Many of the New Zealand nurses were young, from small communities and the tragedy they witnessed affected them for the rest of their life. When young Gladys Henning’s two brothers and husband enlisted she wrote to the War Department offering her services and received the following response: “This will be a short war and women will not be needed.” This turned out to be far from reality. Gladys persisted and served with the New Zealand Volunteer Sisterhood as an ambulance driver on the French battlefields.
During the 2018 Matakana War Memorial ANZAC Day Service these women will be remembered. The stories of three women with local connections who served during World War One will be told. Stories of courage, valour and persistence. Stories about ordinary women serving their country. Stories revealed through the eyes of today’s courageous and persistent women. Sunday 8 April 5pm
The Nukes III album spent six weeks on the New Zealand album, top ten chart, as well as being in the overall top 40 albums, for two weeks. Since the album’s release on 22 February, the band has been touring from Kaitaia to Rakiura with over seventy shows including major festival appearances at Wanaka Festival of Colour, Coastella Kapiti Coast , Kokomai Masterton and Southland Festival of Arts. They have not been back to Warkworth for a couple of years and are looking forward to this overdue return.
Jubilation is a unique beast – an acapella gospel choir with a rock & roll heart. They are not bound by common belief... just a love of singing soul, blues and country-infused gospel from the songbooks of such luminaries as Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Blind Willie Johnson and Emmy Lou Harris.
