The Kiwi Are Coming Back Words by Marguerite Vanderkolk

Imagine having kiwi strolling through your backyard if you live near Mount Tamahunga, north of Matakana! That is the vision of a group of committed locals called the ‘Tamahunga Trappers’. Formed in 2010, all their members have some connection with Mount Tamahunga, with most of them living near or around the maunga (mountain) in the Warkworth/Matakana area. Members are committed to enhancing the forest ecosystem to protect species currently present. To date, this has been done using DOC200 and DOC250 traps to control stoats. This complements pest control work undertaken by the Department of Conservation (DOC), Auckland Council and local iwi, Ngati Manuhiri, to eradicate larger pest species. The twin summits of Mount Tamahunga are a prominent local feature, being the highest in the district at 439m. A well-used walking track extends up and across the summit ridge, forming part of the national Te Araroa Trail. The podocarp-broadleaved forest covering the maunga is one of Auckland’s most diverse. It is home to resident Hochstetter’s frogs, tomtits, and bellbirds. Kaka (the forest parrot) stop on their way

between Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) and the Dome forest. Most significantly, Tamahunga was one of the last places in the North Auckland area to have a remnant kiwi population in the 1980s. The Trappers are currently in negotiation with DOC to translocate kiwi back onto the maunga in 2022. Northland brown kiwi populations continue to decline in unprotected areas. The return of kiwi to Tamahunga would increase the number of kiwi populations in pest-controlled areas north of Auckland and support the survival of the species. The maunga is surrounded by private farmland, lifestyle blocks and small urban settlements. With human habitation so close comes the threat to kiwi survival from people’s pets. In Northland, 65% of kiwi deaths are caused by dogs: pet dogs, working dogs, pig dogs, farm dogs – dogs of all breeds, sizes, natures and training. Normally, kiwi live to be 40-65 years of age, but brown kiwi in Northland have an average life expectancy of just 13 years, because of the impact of dogs. Young birds

face predation from cats and stoats. While a lot of dog owners ensure their animals are secure often, lapses do occur. To ensure the translocated kiwi survive, Tamahunga Trappers will be running free training for dogs to learn to stay away from kiwi if they come across one on the owner’s property. A public open day will be held to introduce the surrounding landowners and wider community to the translocation process. Information about the dog aversion training will be provided to local dog owners. The return of kiwi to the maunga will increase public awareness of conservation efforts needed for kiwi and other species. Through public participation in conservation activities, people learn more about Aotearoa-New Zealand’s amazing natural environment, and what is needed to protect it and the wildlife that inhabits it. Want to find out more or offer to help? Contact the Trappers via email or find them on Facebook. tamahungatrappers@hotmail.co.nz www.facebook.com/TamahungaTrappers

I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again If you are into Martial Arts, you might have heard of the World Kickboxing and Karate Association (WKA). Established in 1976, it is one of the original and largest sanctioning bodies in the world for kickboxing. Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

Did you know that the World President of the WKA is a local? Dave Sawyer is a Grand Master 7th Dan in kickboxing, and currently lives in the Wayby Valley. "I've got a team working for me of about 80 people, covering 60 active countries," Dave says. His main role is to sanction International and World titles, and find fighters opportunities with WKA TV - one of Dave's creations. They also organise the WKA World Championship - a major tournament that happens every year in October all over the world, but mainly in the US and Europe. Locally, Dave is an active freemason from Lodge Orewa, and also started the group "Fight the Tip, Save the Dome" to stop Waste Management's proposed dump in Dome Valley. He runs his own club Dynamic Martial Arts in Silverdale, where a couple of instructors take weekly classes, mainly in kickboxing and boxing. It is also the home of the Fight Girls program. "Fight Girls is a 15-week intensive program that I devised in 2013. I have done a lot of stuff empowering kids - I was a founding member of the first New Zealand chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse. So I was starting

to think about how we could empower women," Dave says. "Anybody can be a Fight Girl - we've had women from 15 to 58 years old. You don't need any experience, we match up girls that are on a similar level, train three times a week, using low kick rules and all the safety precautions, and finish with a big fight night!" "It's a privilege to be part of their journey," Dave says. "One woman who trained with us then went on to report her childhood abuser he went to prison!" Dave never understood the prejudice against women as the weaker sex. "Growing up, my nan was the head of our family and women could do what men did. The women in my family were hard as nails you wouldn't cross them!" One pivotal moment in Dave's life was when he got invited to Kurdistan by a group of Peshmerga Kurds, who wanted to start a kickboxing organisation over there.

"I met a female Kurdish fighter, who had returned to her village only to find it a pile of smoke - everything and everyone was destroyed. But she still got up in the mornings, trying to do something meaningful with her life and help people." This past year it was Dave's time to get up and go, after a huge financial setback due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "We invested a lot in fights all over the world, and lost everything," Dave says, describing it as going from the highest high to the lowest low. "In 2019, I went all over the world to promote and sanction fighting events, travelling to 15 countries in 16 months. Covid came, and we lost all the main fight events - we had planned to make 2,000 plus titles in that year." "So I lost my property and only just managed to keep my club in Silverdale alive. We're now renting land, living in an off-grid cabin while building things back up."

"I was only there for 48 hours, but it was a life-changing experience - it really altered the way I look at different cultures," says Dave.

"After meeting with the Kurdish fighters, I vowed never to give up. It doesn't matter how bad things get - every day you wake up and you have a chance to make it better."

"There were fighters that were Jewish, Muslim, Christian - and they all stood together against ISIS."

• F lowers, leaves, herbs or other nature items • Water

• Pestle and mortar (optional)

• D roppers (optional, can also use spoons, sponges, a spray bottle) Instructions: Wildly Curious is running pre-school and after school Creative Workshops that are nature inspired. Using natural items alongside recycled and sustainable materials the aim is to engage and connect children with the world around them. During workshops children have the unique opportunity to forage for their materials in the amazing grounds at Charlie's Gelato. Creative explorers are welcome to come make and play at one of their sessions during Term 2. 3-5 year olds Tuesdays 9.45am10.30am, 5-10 year olds Tuesdays and Thursdays 3.15pm-5.00pm. Email for further information or to book your child's space. Follow them Instagram and Facebook to hear about the exciting upcoming events and to find out about holiday workshops. wildlycurious.nz@gmail.com www.instagram.com/wildlycurious.nz

1. Crack a small hole in the top of the eggs and drain them out one at a time into a bowl. 2. Wash the egg shells out well with warm water and remove the inner membrane. 3. Boil the egg shells for 5 minutes to remove any bacteria. 4. Now invite your child to fill the eggs with flowers or any other nature items. 5. Once the eggs are full of flowers, fill them to the top with water. 6. Now pop your eggs in the freezer for 3-5 hours until frozen. 7. When your eggs are frozen, allow your child to peel the shell off as you would a regular egg! It’s lots of fun to reveal all the flowers frozen in an egg shape. 8. Use a Pestle and Mortar if you have one to crush the eggs or a dropper and warm water to melt the ice.

A Season and A Reason

‘Her Harvest Garden’ is a local small scale flower farm producing specialty cut flowers with a focus on sustainability.

Kate McDonald, the face behind Her Harvest Garden, started her flower journey in Taupo in 2017 with local florist, Kristen of ‘XOX Floral’. Beginning by washing buckets and sweeping floors, Kate was soon assisting with flower orders, wedding arrangements and helping to co-ordinate Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day orders. Kristen’s ideals of spreading kindness, supporting local growers, working with nature and returning her work to the earth to complete nature's cycle resonated with Kate's own personal values. “It was so amazing to find something I am so passionate about. I just loved being around the flowers and working in that beautiful space was so inspiring,” she says. After moving North to Mangawhai in early 2020, Kate’s dreams of starting Her Harvest Garden flourished into a business. On a small bit of land generously lent to her by her inlaws Kate started growing, being particularly drawn to blooms that dry well naturally. “People really seem to love the dried flowers; I think the fact that they can be enjoyed for much longer is a major attraction.” You’ll find Kate and her husband Joshua at a few of the Auckland Markets – Coatesville, Smales Farm, Long Bay with hopes of adding Mangawhai Tavern Market to this list too.

Kate’s approach to flower farming and floral design is more natural. “The flower industry can be deceptively harmful to the environment. There are a lot of bleached and dyed dried flowers out there at the moment, but when the natural colours of the flowers are so beautiful there’s no need to mess with nature.” Her Harvest Garden is also proudly floral foam and plastic free with all organic waste returned to the earth. Inspired by nature and the seasons, Kate uses flowers from her gardens or supports other local growers, and this means customers end up with a fresher product. “I love the idea of acknowledging the importance of each season, like the lifecycle of a plant, it brings hope. There’s a time for sowing and new beginnings, a time for blossoming and abundance, followed by rest and hibernation. Giving myself permission to reflect and embody the seasonal nature of life is a refreshing way to look at things, especially with everything that is going on in the world at this time.” You can find her online or follow her on both Instagram and Facebook @herharvestgarden. www.herharvestgarden.com herharvestgarden@gmail.com

Māori world view. They also investigated the concepts of Student Volunteer Armies and decided to form their very own. Viewing themselves as Kaitiaki (guardians) of the school environment they investigated what influence they may have to bring about environmental change and what actions they could take to collectively improve the environment. The end result of this learning was the conceptualisation of Te Kai, a fabulous community fresh produce stall which now sits proudly at the school gate. The purpose of Te Kai is to provide a space to share some of the excess produce that is harvested from the garden, and to give the wider community a space to share and swap their locally grown produce. Any money raised via koha from the stall goes towards improving and extending the school gardens. As an Enviroschool, Leigh School is guided by the five principles of empowered students, sustainable communities, learning for sustainability, Māori perspectives and respect for the diversity of people and culture. The Garden to Table program and the student led initiative of Te Kai are powerful examples of these principles at play. www.leigh.school.nz | 09 422 6031

Top Pickings Nicky and Ray Crocker are the ‘new kids on the block’ in the Mangawhai Wine Valley (off King Road). Yet in a short time and with the help of established vines planted by Liz and Gary Cameron of Lochiel Estate some 15 years ago, and their many mentors such as their winemaker Rod McIvor from Marsden Estate and Mark Nobilo (Nobilo Wines), they are starting to make a name for themselves. Having never had a lot to do with the wine industry, apart from drinking it, and many moons ago Ray was a rep for Corbans Wines, Nicky and Ray Crocker have dived headfirst into the industry. The grape varieties they have inherited are Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Syrah.

all the work these two physically put into this project (and all their family and friends who helped pick) they managed to deliver some grapes they could be proud of to the winemaker in KeriKeri.

“After taking regular Brix readings and establishing the ideal day to pick, we contact our friends, family and a number of eager customers who assemble at 8am ready for the day's picking.”

“Harvest time is the culmination of a year's work so it's a real celebration!” they tell us.

The vineyard was hit the first year with three cyclones and after playing catch up from this sudden new learning curve and these weather events, they sadly didn’t manage to produce wine in the first year. Luckily their second year was more bountiful and with

The harvesting of the grapes at BrookeLane Vineyard is normally done on three separate days as the Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Syrah all reach their optimum Brix (sugar) levels at different times - as a general rule about two weeks apart.

All of their grapes are hand picked and placed into cutting bins which are then transferred into larger bins that hold around 300kgs each. Once full these bins are transported to Keri Keri the same day for weighing and processing. “Picking day is a whole lot of fun as once the harvest is done, we put on a big lunch and

have a toast to the new season’s grapes and a job well done!” The Tavern at Mangawhai proudly stocks all three of their wines and are thrilled to have a locally produced wine on their Wine List. The Thirsty Tui Hotel in Paparoa also stocks BrookeLane Wines as does the stunning Terra Restaurant in Paihia. But for a truly unique experience, visiting their quirky converted container cellar door means that you get to hear directly from Ray or Nicky about their journey. You will also no doubt get to meet their Jack Russell ‘Cheeky Charlie’ who the Pinot Gris is named after, and of course the local Longfin Eels, whose namesake is the Chardonnay. “These are almost prehistoric and live at the bottom of the drive, some could be as old as 80-100 years old.” Their famous Rosé ‘Tipsy Tui’ is named for their TuiTui who they rescued and hand reared after a big storm hit two years ago. Brick Bay Launches Brunch Menu New experiments have been simmering away at Brick Bay over the past few weeks. Working around the disruptions of recent lockdown restrictions, the whole team has been collaborating on the latest additions and are very excited to announce the launch of a brunch menu!

Joining their lunch and grazing menus which are available later in the day, the brunch offering will include ten delicious dishes, available from 10am-12pm every day from March onwards. There is something for everyone on the brunch menu: house-smoked Bluff salmon on toasted brioche, coconut sago pudding with spiced plum and rhubarb, and if you are a fan of their famous beef cheeks, your palate is in for a pleasant surprise. Following Brick Bay’s ‘Garden to Table’ and ‘Farm to Plate’ philosophy the new menu makes the most of the property’s seasonal produce - Brick Bay lamb, honey and olive oil. Head Chef Cam has been working with Warkworth Butchers to create a Brick Bay lamb Merguez sausage, which will feature

in their twist on a traditional ‘Big Breakfast’ accompanied by bacon, fried egg, smoked vine tomatoes, buttered garlic perla potatoes, eggplant kasundi and BBQ Turkish bread. Brick Bay’s seasonal figs and gorgeous honey will be complemented by prosciutto, ricotta, balsamic and lavosh - a beautifully balanced plate of light, fresh flavours. And for those with a sweet tooth you’ll love their version of banana, date and walnut loaf, served with smoked bacon and a lashing of whipped maple syrup butter. There’s also been a fair amount of beverage development going on; launching with the new brunch menu will be an offering of housemade cocktails! The team has taken some of the classics and shaken them up by adding

distinctive Brick Bay flavours. The ‘Morning Mary’ features tomato juice and smoked beetroot juice, lemon, Worcester sauce, sriracha, Martello Rock and pickled celery. The non-alcoholic ‘Fruit Karma’ cocktail features Karma Gingerella with seasonal Brick Bay fruit purée, lemon and Brick Bay honey. And let's not forget the ‘Garden Spritz’ mixing seasonal Brick Bay fruit, lemon and honey, orange juice with Lillet Rose vermouth and Maude Traditionnelle NV. So with brunch plates and cocktails to taste there’s even more reason to visit Brick Bay. As always it’s recommended you book a table in advance. www.brickbay.co.nz/bookings

Grown to Share Nestled beside the Rose Madsen Cottage in the Domain are the Mangawhai Community Gardens. Established around 12 years ago by Joan Farrell, who was recently the recipient of International Women’s Day/Zonta Rose Awards 2021, for her volunteer services to the community. Photos Patricia Harvey

Joan’s vision was to grow produce for the community, whilst at the same time bringing people together to socialise and share gardening knowledge. From a blank canvas of land adjoining the upper reaches of the Estuary, locals rallied together, and with a tractor and rotary hoe, two medium sized plots were formed. With donations aplenty including an old bath for a worm farm, tools, hay, horse and donkey manure, the gardens became a reality. Volunteers meet on Friday mornings for a few hours: “You only come if you feel like it, and stay for as long as you feel like,” they say. Harvesting, weeding, sowing, planting and watering happens with great gusto by all. There are five enclosed gardens, and one has cover for protection from birds, which is

their berry house. The berry house produced a good crop of strawberries over the summer. There is a new area being converted from kikuyu to orchard, and vegie gardens incorporating flowers and meandering paths. Four compost bins have recently been erected from upcycled pallets collected around town, where Sustainable Kaipara held a composting demonstration for the volunteers and the bins are filling up fast. There are new directions in crop plantings with giant mushrooms, Asian greens, asparagus and bitter marrow. An area for seed raising is a must, as it would be a big step for them to be more self sufficient. They are also exploring gourmet crops with the possibility of selling excess to help purchase supplies such as fresh seed,

mulch, fertilisers, tools and other essential necessities. Currently there is a project underway to build a shelter to install a water tank to harvest much needed rainwater. Have we mentioned the pizza oven yet? It is on their wish list and would be a great way to bring community groups together, and a lovely way to fundraise, especially by using beautiful spray-free veggies fresh from the community garden! That’s one of their long-term goals but looking at the next two years the immediate needs are to create more garden beds to extend the amount and variety of crops grown. This in turn means they can donate more produce to the wonderful local community. www.facebook.com/ mangawhaicommunitygarden

Vertical Gardening In the vegetable garden, vertical gardening is a time-tested, common-sense way to grow a lot of vegetables in a small footprint. Even if you have acres of space to garden, growing plants upward on some type of support offers other benefits. By gardening vertically your fruits and vegetables are lifted off the ground, where they would otherwise get splashed with soil, exposed to more diseases and risk rotting. Air circulation is improved also and this will keep the leaves drier and help prevent fungal diseases. It will also cause the leaves to desiccate during hot, sunny, or windy times, so extra watering might be necessary. Trellised plants are exposed to more sunlight, which will help fruits ripen faster by allowing for more photosynthesis. Pollinators will have an easier time flitting from flower to flower, but fourfooted pests will have a harder time trying to reach and steal your produce. Bamboo teepees/tripods – Typically made from three bamboo poles lashed together to form a tripod shape, this easy-tobuild trellis is ideal for crops like pole beans, peas, and even cucumbers. Some of the taller varieties of beans will double over themselves on a short teepee, so longer trellis or some type of arbor might be a better choice for these.

A-frame trellises – These trellises are typically quite strong and work well with heavy vines, giving sturdier support than an upright or teepee trellis. They can be used for beans, peas, gourds, melons, squash, and cucumbers. When your fruit starts to get large and threatens to break off, use a sling, which can be anything from an old t-shirt to an old medical mask. Don’t put the slings out until the fruits start to get about mid-size, as you want to allow the fruits to get plenty of sun and air. Arbors, arches, and tunnels – Perfect for growing a wide variety of vining vegetables over the tunnels (especially beans), as well as plenty of climbing flowers too such as Wisteria and Jasmine. You can also add beautiful garden arches and arbors between raised beds or at the entrance to a vegetable garden to support vertical crops, creating a tunnel like pergola. Wall/Flat Trellis - An entire green screen can be created by placing a trellis alongside the wall to grow climbing veggies. This method offers great support to plants such as cucumbers and young grape vines, as well as beautifying a space or blocking out an unwanted view.

Oval Minded At first impression, it’s the oval shape that makes this house stand out. But it’s not until you get closer that you get a true appreciation for the rich contrast between its rough concrete panels and soft cedar – or between its breath-taking views and discreet peeping holes. Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

unique identity to the home,” David says.

“The home itself is a sculptural response to the demanding conditions associated with an exposed beach location like Omaha,” David says. “It also responds to the need for privacy amongst a built-up holiday home community.” Beach living means finding a way to live alongside the strong forces of nature. One of the challenges with planning and building this home was creating privacy and shelter from the intense south-westerly and north-easterly winds, and ensuring some shade for outdoor living – but not so much that you feel closed in. The answer was creating a private central courtyard, a sociable suntrap that offers shelter from predominant winds and abundant shade through use of generous overhangs. “The most unique part of the project I think was the acceptance that wrapping a sheltering series of forms around an outdoor space with a mix of rough concrete finishes and softly shaped cedar provides a

“It’s not obvious what is happening within when viewed from the street – and this purposeful screening of the private zones builds a sense of curiosity about what might be going on. It also provides a balanced sense of self-time for the owners, amongst what can be a busy holiday environment. They choose when to open up to the world around them, without ever feeling entirely disconnected either.” We find another standout design feature indoors. The family wanted some spatial division for activities across the different ages of the family members, but still within an open plan, avoiding undue separation. The practical solution was wide opening living area sliders, to maximise the connection to this space and allow look through peeks to both the view corridors facing east to the beach. There are also peepholes to the smaller second living lounge for the children. At an artistic level, David feels delighted that the home has its own unique character. “It’s a sense of expression that evolved directly through considered functional response to the environmental conditions – and also a reflection of the client’s character,” he says.

“Purposeful, maybe mysterious yet very social and full of welcome.” Sustainability has been a key consideration throughout the project. The interior wood finishes are all plantation sourced oak or cedar – a conscious decision to steer clear of short-term exotic options. Durable materials and natural airflow through the home are also fundamental qualities of the design, with louvred windows allowing fresh air to circulate through all areas of the house without air conditioning. The brief was to create a space where the client would have treasured time together in the Kiwi tradition of family time away while the children were young. A place to retreat, recharge and celebrate life. “As much as having a beach house is a luxury it still takes effort to gather the kids, load the car and pick up the treats you’ll feast on, so the design has to motivate the owners to make that effort,” David says. “It was such a delight to receive a call after the first summer the owners spent here, saying that the family just loved their sanctuary – that it worked on all levels and they only left when forced to.” www.pfa.nz | www.mhphotos.co.nz

Love for Leather Amy Westlake fell in love with the art of leather craft after a trip to the USA in 2018 and from there grew Fosse Leather.

When starting out, leather work can be a costly hobby as the tools and the leather is expensive. Luckily for Amy her father had made a few saddles and other horse tack over the years so she was already equipped with many of the tools and a mentor. However, she has learnt a lot along the way from trial and error. ‘Measure twice, cut once’ is a motto that is crucial when working with leather due to its expensive nature. As good quality leather can be hard to source in New Zealand most of the leather Amy uses, she imports from the USA. Vegetable tanned leather is the go to for most of the products Fosse Leather produces.

There are two main methods of tanning hides to create leather, Chrome Tan which uses a chemical process to cure the hide and Vegetable Tan which uses a more natural curing process.

Daisy by Pat Backley ‘Daisy’ is a novel, a gentle family saga, spanning almost 100 years, from 1887-1974.

Looking Out for Our Dotterel Community Words and Photos Michele Mackenzie

So many people don’t notice our Dotterels or think they are just another bird, however don't let the small size of these birds fool you as they have the biggest personalities on the beach. They are very romantic and fearless little birds that love, fight and even grieve at the death of a loved one. They can be grumpy or bossy but are so very funny and intelligent, and can form close bonds with people.

in the sand however some are decorators and spend hours decorating with seaweed, leaves and shells in and around their nests. They are so house proud, quite the designers, moving a shell five times until it's in exactly the right place or changing their mind and putting it back where they started! Extreme storms and rising seas can easily sweep these nests away.

They are our locals, truly part of this community, as they don’t migrate. They partner for life at two years old however this doesn't stop the male every year romancing her even though she’s a sure thing. He will put on his best rust coloured plumage, stand a little taller while puffing his chest to look bigger, rocking his best moves and serenading her.

They usually lay three small speckled eggs but many eggs are lost as they are extremely hard to see and get stepped on. Another threat is the sun as it doesn't take long for those precious little eggs to cook on the hot sand if mum (who shades them in the heat) is scared away from the nest. If the parents are distracted trying to keep humans away it is the perfect time for a Seagull or Pukeko to swoop in and eat the eggs or chicks,

Mostly their nests are little more than scraps

taking only seconds to do so. Dotterels have been known to pretend to have a broken wing to lure predators away from their young and nest. When the chicks hatch they are like fluffy bumble bees, so tiny yet they are walking within hours and feeding themselves - no their parents don't feed them at all. They feed in the intertidal zone eating pesky sandhoppers, worms and things, they hide up the beach behind grasses, logs or seaweed when there's a threat, or if there's too much disturbance and they can’t get down the beach to feed, they quickly become weak and sadly they starve to death hiding out of sight. From January until the start of the breeding season (as early as August) they have big singles parties, gathering in large groups

of 20 or more on the beach. These are juveniles and adults that have lost their mate looking for their life partner and are speed dating before the breeding season begins. Their last accurate count was in 2011 with their population at only 2075 but New Zealand has changed so much since then, through development and growth in population. The once quiet, safe beaches are no longer theirs and we don’t give them any peaceful safe space to live and raise their families. In 2019, on just one beach there were 20 nesting pairs. If 75% laid three eggs and 25% laid two, that's a minimum of 60 eggs and or chicks, of those only three survived to fledge. Not to mention the increasing common losses of breeding adults. These beautiful, precious little souls need our compassion and help to survive and flourish. Take those few extra steps and do not disturb them. Leave space for them and their families to grow and survive and keep your pets away as they are ground nesting birds and don’t stand a chance. Sit a while and enjoy them. Get to know them as they are such special little birds. www.facebook.com/Michele-MackenziePhotography www.michelemackenzie.co.nz

Jelly Tips Words Georgia Third

This summer saw warmer than usual waters around New Zealand and many people experienced jellyfish blooms interrupting their beach plans. Increased ocean temperatures mean more food for jellies, encouraging rapid growth. Although it can be a pain (in more ways than one) for those trying to enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea, not all jellyfish are harmful to humans and they are a widely diverse and interesting group of animals. One of the most primitive of any group of invertebrates, jellyfish have no brain, blood, bones or heart yet are capable of reproduction, defence and food capture.

A jellyfish sting is caused by little cells called nematocysts which deploy mini-spearguns loaded with venom into your skin. Luckily in New Zealand, most stings aren’t serious. Vinegar or some acidic liquids can help with some stings but may make it worse for others. The most reliable remedy is to rinse the site with sea water and pluck the stingers off with tweezers. by The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) tells us about the jellyfish we commonly find around the coast. The biggest being the lion’s mane, which can grow up to 2m wide with 30m long tentacles! Normally though, the ones we find are much smaller than this. Their bell-top is a mauve magenta colour, looking cosmic with their frilly tentacles underneath. The crimson jellyfish and the immortal jellyfish are so similar, they have only recently been identified as separate species. Each are only the size of a fingernail and entirely translucent aside from their bright

red stomach and sex organs. These have been particularly prevalent this year and many locals have been concerned about their risk to humans. Luckily, they are too small to cause any harm. The immortal jellyfish, as the name suggests, have the remarkable ability to age backwards. Like a butterfly to a caterpillar, an adult jellyfish when stressed can return to its juvenile polyp stage. Researchers hope that learning more about this species will have applications to human regenerative medicine, a wild and exciting prospect. Salp are another harmless jellyfish that lack tentacles and nematocysts. They’re barrelshaped, almost fully transparent and can join to form chains several metres long which unfortunately results in reduced water visibility for divers and snorkelers. Salp multitask, filtering the water to eat while using that motion to move around. One salp species, the fire salp, forms a glow-in-thedark, sock-like colony, sometimes large enough to fit a human inside! Many people have seen bluebottle, AKA Portuguese man o' war washed up on the beach but, this isn’t a true jellyfish. This colonial animal, or siphonophore, has many specialised polyps that work together to function as one. Some are responsible for feeding, others reproduction or defence and are reliant on effective teamwork to survive. Sea lice are the common perpetrator of painful, post swim rashes, but their name disguises the true identity of the culprit jellyfish larvae. When trapped between your togs and skin, the pressure on the juvenile jellyfish causes them to sting. You might not even notice you’ve been stung until after you’ve gotten out of the water. Although jellyfish may interrupt beach plans, take a moment to remember that the water is their home, and these remarkable creatures deserve to enjoy it. Brick Bay Folly: Genealogy of the Pacific The latest winning design of the annual architectural Folly competition has opened at Brick Bay. Now in its sixth year, the competition is open to tertiary students and graduates of architecture, challenged with designing and building a folly structure. Words Tegan Dunn

The winning team consists of Daniel Ho, Rita Cai and Raymond Yoo - three students of Auckland University's School of Architecture who submitted their entry ‘Genealogy of the Pacific’. Delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions, completion has been pushed into this year, with an awe-inspiring result. Drawing inspiration from the curvilinear form of DNA strands, the structure is an imposing sight from the hilltop. Appearing monolithic and monochrome from afar, the viewer’s relationship to the tower morphs upon closer inspection, revealing its bricklike modular form in a variety of twists and turns and allowing a glimpse of the timber beneath the paint layers. However the tower is not as seamless as it suggests; its labour intensive construction consists of 885 timber bricks, meticulously pieced together in horizontal layers. Team leader Daniel explains, “We particularly enjoyed the opportunity of constructing our design. By going beyond our status quo of drawings and scale models, we were introduced to many challenges we had never

encountered in architecture school. From monitoring a budget, to proper construction sequencing and project management. It was all new to us, and at times, it almost overwhelmed us. However, that magical moment seeing everything come together, and realising we just finished our first built project, is something none of us will forget. We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported us on this journey.” The competition attracts a number of high calibre entries which are blind judged by a panel of industry experts who then mentor the team through the process. This year’s panel was chaired by renowned architect Pip Cheshire who recalls, “We commentators identified issues as basic as the logistics of machining four and a half thousand individual parts, the bolt-tightening methodology, and the health and safety implications of the delivery, unloading and assembly sequence of the partially assembled elements...The Folly program is a great challenge, the growth in the designers’ knowledge, ability and confidence has been enormous, and the

result is a beautiful piece of work that easily realises the potential of the original renders and offers a work that is both enigmatic and suggestive.” Architectural follies are found around the world and their purpose is to inspire and delight audiences. The Brick Bay Folly project provides a fantastic opportunity for emerging architects to test their ideas on a real life project, manage construction, solve contingencies and participate in physical construction. With generous sponsorship from Resene, Naylor Love, Unitec, and Cheshire Architects, the winning team is provided with a financial budget, professional workshop space, equipment, and many hours of donated time from the project mentors. Professional photography is provided by Sam Hartnett and publicity from media partner Architecture New Zealand/Architecture NOW. The Folly is open now at Brick Bay, to be enjoyed by all visitors. www.brickbaysculpture.co.nz

Matakohe Memorial Monument We Shall Remember Them Dotted around the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand are Memorial Monuments constructed by local communities to remember those who paid the ultimate price in the field of war. Each ANZAC Day since its unveiling in 1922 the Matakohe Memorial Monument has been a focal point to remember the impact of war on our community.

The Monument sits alongside a German Howitzer gun at the beginning of Church Road, Matakohe. Once this triangle of land was part of the main road to Dargaville from State Highway One and would have been seen by all those that drove by. The significance of this and similar monuments erected throughout the country were well understood by those whose lives were directly impacted by the sacrifices they represent. Does that knowledge still resonate with those who see the Memorial Monument today? Certainly ANZAC Day each year reignites these memories for our community. The Kauri Museum collection contains a series of photographs that document the process of the building of the Matakohe Memorial Monument in 1921. The images show the quarrying of the stone by volunteers on the Te Kowhai (Northern Wairoa River side of the Hukatere peninsula) land of Eleanor Coates, farmed by the Honourable Joseph Gordon Coates (then Minister of Public Works) in partnership with his brother, Rodney. Mr William Smith, familiar with the finer points of tool maintenance, was on hand, with his anvil and forge, to ensure that all the drill bits were sharp for splitting the rock. The workers were able to enjoy a well-earned break for a picnic lunch on site. The split stone is manoeuvred onto a barge to be towed to Ranganui before being lifted onto railway trucks and taken to Bouskill monumental masons in Auckland. The Monument was completed and returned to Matakohe for assembly before the unveiling on 3 January 1922. With the memory of ‘the war to end all wars‘ still fresh, and continuing to impact on the lives of everyone, the unveiling drew a big crowd. It was important to acknowledge the fallen of our community and remember the great service they had given their country. The 20 soldiers whose names are listed on the Monument are still remembered in the ANZAC displays at The Kauri Museum. Almost 100 years later the Matakohe Memorial Monument still resonates with the sacrifice of our people on battlefields at the other side of the world. They are long remembered in Matakohe, so next time you visit The Kauri Museum take time to stop at the Monument, and remember. Lest We Forget. Matakana War Memorial We Remember Them Words Adrienne Miller

We haven’t held an official ANZAC Day Service at the Matakana War Memorial for the past two years. Cancellation was the word Christchurch Mosque shooting and a pandemic forced us to act in clandestine ways. At dawn, bagpipes were heard throughout the village, a haunting bugle sounded the Last Post, and a tender Waiata sent us on our way. On those cold April mornings that ANZAC Spirit arose and We remembered. This ANZAC Spirit originated during the First World War on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The British commanders recognised unusual attitudes and deeds performed by the New Zealand and Australian soldiers. A quick Google search and we see that the ANZAC Spirit is defined as: straight-up; classless; tolerant; courageous; enduring; clever; creative and trusting.

In other words we get the hard jobs done in our own special way, without nonsense, snobbery or whining.

The soldiers listed on the Matakana War Memorial expressed these characteristics. Private Eric Ingram, a young farmer from the Whangaripo Valley, woke on Thursday 4 October 1917 to face the worst day of his life - the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge. Rifleman Charles Leeds of Tongue Farm used Gold Mines to help the Australian Tunnelling Corp at Vimy, Ypres and Messines. For two years he lived underground digging those famous tunnels under the German lines.

A Time for Reflection Harvest time, where I grew up in Iowa, coincided with Thanksgiving – a time for sharing gratitude with family for our lives and the lives of those that are no longer with us. From Dia de los Muertos in Mexico to the

Chinese Moon Festival; Fall (or Autumn) has

stirred something in humans to pause and look back on the past.

At besoul, we help people find that special way to remember and look back at the lives of their loved ones. We strive with each celebration

of life to reveal and share the essence of that person’s life in the way that truly represents who they were.

Everyone has a ‘soul’ whether you believe in

an afterlife or not, it’s the mark they have left

behind. Whether they were a life and soul of the party type or a gentle soul, we can provide the

guidance and advice to create the perfect way

to remember the life of a loved one. To honour the essence of a life. We can also help with pre-planning the way you would like to be remembered. We can help you to dig into those memory banks and share those moments and experiences that your family and friends may not even have realised were important to you. If you don’t tell your loved ones what you want out of your last mile, it won’t happen. Taking the time now to share your stories and treasured memories and how you would like your last event to look will also make things easier on your loved ones. Imagine having to make a list of decisions, about things you may never have thought about, while you are coming to terms

that someone you love has gone. With our purpose built facility the options are endless, you can truly make the space your own, bring in favourite golf clubs, or build a wall of flowers or balloons – no life is the same, so no funeral should be either. In this season of harvest, I encourage you to take some time to sit down with some favourite music, favourite photos and mementos and write down moments in your life that you want to make sure last forever.
