SPOTLIGHT

THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND: HARKERS HERBALS

Wander down the main street of Waipu and you’ll find Harker Herbals, a natural wellness business founded by the late Malcolm Harker in 1981. Waipu counts Malcolm among its more colourful characters. Famous for his herbal tonics (and legendary parties), Malcolm returned to New Zealand in the late 1970s very ill. Several years working and playing hard in Australia had not been kind to his health. After trying prescription drugs and surgery to treat his chronic diseases, Malcolm turned to traditional herbal remedies and good nutrition. It was a lifestyle change that kick started both his health and a new career. With Malcolm looking (and feeling) the best he had for years, people arrived on his doorstep looking for answers to their own health problems. Malcolm opened his first business, The Herbal Clinic in Grey Lynn, using a five-litre pot and a one-element stove, creating herbal remedies to treat everything from skin disorders to lung congestion. His first tonics used organic apple cider vinegar which, combined with bitter herbs,

were not the most pleasant tasting. Malcolm’s solution was to add 30% Manuka honey. So far so good, except for the resulting fermentation; the tonics self-destructed after a week with patients reporting ruined fridges and splattered wallpaper. Malcolm had to quickly revise his formulas! Despite the initial challenges, Malcolm enjoyed enormous success, treating patients around New Zealand. He went on to train as a master herbalist, earning a Master of Herbology in Advanced Herbal Medicine from Emerson College, Quebec. Resettling in Waipu, he opened Harker Herbals and the rest, as they say, is history. Although Malcolm sold his business to private New Zealand investors several years ago, he continued to be involved, nurturing the next generation of talent with his own natural health course and writing his own Health and Healing manual. When he passed away suddenly in December 2017 there was an outpouring of condolences and happy memories shared on social media; news of his death reached more than 50,000 people.

Harker Herbals continues to make Malcolm’s original formulas, selling them at their Waipu shop and through pharmacies and health stores throughout New Zealand. To complement Malcolm’s tonics, Harker’s brought herbalist Paul Mitchell on board to make a contemporary range of herbal syrups for children. The children’s syrups were so well received that last year a high strength version for adults was added to the Harker Herbals range. Around the first anniversary of Malcolm’s death, a catastrophic fire burnt down the premises Harker Herbals had called home for many years. The team has opened a temporary shop at 8 The Centre, where they can watch their new store being rebuilt just across the road. Malcolm’s legacy is set to continue in contemporary style.

PROFILE

FULL THROTTLE WITH PRO DRIFTER CARL THOMPSON WORDS

Carl Thompson is a rising star on the drifting scene. Only two years into professional racing, he’s already in the pro-series and placing as one of the top ten drivers in New Zealand. But he’s certainly not new to cars.

REBECKA

BJELFVENTSTAM

A love of motoring runs in the Thompson family blood. Carl’s father Jamie collects cars and even had a car museum in Kaipara Flats back in the day. Carl’s wife Tash and his mother Julie – of Julie’s Animal Rescue – have always been incredibly supportive of his passion.

“I was about twelve years old when we moved from Warkworth to a lifestyle block in Kaipara Flats. That’s when I started driving in the paddocks,” says Carl. “My friends and my older brothers and I would go to the wreckers and get a car for about 50 dollars. They weren’t road legal, but they were starting. Then we’d just wreck them even more – jumping over motocross jumps, driving through trees, sliding around and doing burnouts. They wouldn’t last a week – sometimes they wouldn’t last an hour!”

“My family like to watch the races – sometimes they get more nervous than me,” laughs Carl. “My daughter Ellie, who is four, loves speed. She’s already trying to drive things. And my son Charlie who's nearly one – his first word was car.” Carl’s motor-sport of choice is called drifting. Two vehicles are on the track at the same time, but it’s not necessarily the fastest car that wins. The judges lay out clipping points, creating a new track for each competition. The cars must hit these points within a certain distance, sometimes

as close as 100mm, most of the time while sliding sideways! The three judges then score each driver on a number of criteria, including how fluent the clipping points are being hit, the depth of the angles and the driver’s attitude - how much noise they make, how much smoke they create, and how aggressive they drive. Drifting cars have brake lights on the roof, and excessive use of brakes will cost you points. “Full throttle means the best scores – so I try to brake as little as possible,” says Carl. Carl is a Falken Tyres driver and his race cars are highly modified Nissans. A big part of his time with the team is spent in the garage. “When you’re designing a race car, you’ve got a vision, you’re doing it up to a really high level, and you’re pushing the boundaries for everyone”, Carl says.

Other than swish colour schemes, another thing that sets Carl's car apart is the licence plate saying FATBOY.

you speak is what you create in life.

“Fatboy was my nickname from friends growing up, so it was a joke at first - but now FatboyDrift is my brand. It’s definitely more memorable than Carl Thompson!” he says.

“I used to question myself and look too much at what other people were doing. And if you speak negatively, you’re making yourself believe it. Once I realised that, things turned for me. Now I know that I can go out and do anything my own way. I respect other drivers. When they get good results and good partnerships, I’m happy for them, because I know how hard they’ve worked.

For anyone else starting out, Carl recommends you get a RWD-car that is easy to slide and start practising in a safe place. And above all to believe in yourself. He strongly believes that the language

“My biggest hurdles would always be in my own head,” says Carl.

Once you realise that the only person holding you back is yourself, you stop comparing yourself to others, and just focus on pushing yourself in a good direction.” After years of working in a tyre shop, Carl is now able to focus on racing full-time. “Half of the fun is what we do in the garage as a team. We’re all good buddies. We build cars, we break them, and then we do it all over again!” goodwinperformanceltd@gmail.com www.instagram.com/fatboydrift

Botox safely lightens and softens both fine and deeper lines with results getting better over time with regular treatments. Terri can show you how simply treating the vertical lines between your eyebrows can take years off your appearance and reduce the grumpy, scowling look which often accompanies these lines. Dermal fillers subtly enhance volume losses associated with the aging process and are perfect for cheek and lip enhancement. Terri is a very experienced specialist nurse and being mature herself, prefers to treat her clients using very subtle techniques as she understands her clients do not want obvious results.

LOCAL JAZZ AT WARKWORTH TOWN HALL Having packed the Matakana Hall last year two of Warkworth’s best Jazz bands are again joining forces to try to fill Warkworth Town Hall. There has been a renewed interest in jazz music and we have been many requests for a repeat concert. The bands playing, Mahurangi Ramblers and Jazz Connection, are each offering a new programme from Old Time Traditional jazz to the smooth swing sounds of the Glen Miller era. The Concert is on Sunday the 5 May from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. Tickets $10 at the door

CLIFF TOP WEDDING WORDS KIRSTY

In our eyes our wedding day could not have been more perfect. It was so relaxed and easily the best day of our lives, we loved every second of it - we are still buzzing. The weather had been amazing in the days leading up to our big day. However, when we woke up on Saturday 9 February it was raining heavily. It rained on and off all morning and did not look promising for our planned outdoor ceremony. We continued getting ready knowing that we might have to go to plan B at the last minute. When 1.30pm rolled around, it was still raining, but we decided to risk it and stick with plan A and we are so happy that we did. The weather cleared and the rain stopped just in time for us to walk down our opposing aisles at 3pm. It truly was an unforgettable intimate ceremony on the cliff top. We wanted to get married in Mangawhai as it is such a beautiful place with beach and rural flavours that are special to us. It is rich

in family history, particularly for me as my mother Rosemary’s side of the family are from Mangawhai with a number of the streets in the Heads area being named after family members. My mother and father Bruce were married in the garden of my great grandparents’ home which was originally built for my great great grandparents. So we felt it was the perfect place and one that I wanted to share with my now wife Tameka and her family and friends from the Gold Coast, Australia. In keeping with our beach/rustic theme we decided to have the actual ceremony at an old family friend’s home in the garden with the harbour providing an unforgettable backdrop. For the reception we headed to a local spot - The Cow Shed, an absolutely amazing wedding venue that had everything we could ever have wanted and more. Lovely hosts, a relaxed atmosphere, games in the garden and a beautiful setting for a

perfect celebration with family and friends. For our photos we again chose to incorporate both beach and rustic settings, capturing half of our photos at Picnic Bay and half at my great grandparents’ old house with local photographer Sarah Weber. Merijen Oliver from My Little Flower Company added more local colour with our beautiful bouquets. All aspects of the wedding had special significance for us - our fabulous cake was designed by family friend Jess Atkins of Rosey Cakes, our amazing hair stylist was Will Graham of Will’s Hair Boutique and our makeup artist was Tenille Horscroft, a lifelong friend. We will treasure the memories of our wedding day forever and thank the many special people who contributed towards making it so perfect.

THE VALUE OF A PERSONAL TOUCH

“...and the drinks bar will hang amongst the trees!” she said, and it did. Brides-to-be are increasingly calling for personalized and unique touches to their wedding day or hens do. Also for the location and decor to be nothing short of their version of perfection, in order to create those seamless Insta-ready, Pinterest-perfect, frame-worthy photos that represent the ideals of her and hubby-to-be. The social era we live in today has created this common thirst for that unforgettable personal touch that will make our guests rave about the day. However, when it comes to sourcing unique decor items, where the inspiration has come from other weddings worldwide, it can be a bit of a hindrance sourcing similarly inimitable items. If DIY is out of

the question, brides can be left with little choice but to end up with less than charming alternatives from franchise hire stores, resulting in décor that is just short of predictable. White satin drapery, anyone? The solution to this could be hiring a wedding planner, however cutting out the middleman may be a time-saver for this type of affair and more appealing to those on a budget. Besides, for those that are looking to treat their guests to the charms of an entirely unique atmosphere, there is something enriching about being able to source your own items for that bespoke touch. This would also allow your event or wedding to be even more special by including the pieces that truly spark joy (to quote our new friend, Marie Kondo) to you and/or your future husband.

Warkworth Menswear has all your wedding needs covered. From shirts, suits and shoes. Cuff-links and ties. We even do Rembrandt suit hire. 09 425 8408 www.facebook.com/warkworthmenswear 18 Queen Street, Warkworth 22

Looking to a localised vintage hire store would address all of the issues when it comes to sourcing hire goods that can be customized, therefore modernized, with signage and florals to match your theme. Not to mention adding charm and pizzaz to your wedding or event. North Auckland’s AVA Hire was born to provide a solution to the woes of the bride craving a bespoke touch. AVA Hire (Auckland Vintage Accessory Hire) offers a small but focused range of vintage décor and furniture pieces in the Snells Beach/Matakana area such as brass vases and candelabras, vintage crystal glassware and mirrors, market umbrellas, boho rugs and lanterns, and yes, a rustic hanging bar shelf. Not to forget a charming set of woodland chairs each individually sourced that

when placed together around a long table seem to cheer with their outdoor surroundings or rustic venue. For those that would like to add that extra personal touch, AVA offers custom graphics in the form of mirror or frame signage to welcome guests to the venue or display the range of refreshments available at the bar. Once guests have wet their whistle why not provide a jumbo vintage polaroid frame perfect for endless group photo opportunities? These can be designed to match the theme of the wedding, hens do or any other event. Some brides-to-be have opted to have a jumbo polaroid at both their hens party and wedding with similar or completely different themes.

PLANNING YOUR LOVE LIFE

Sitting down with Natasha Ujdur of One Oh Nine Events feels like a coffee date with an old friend. The chatter is relaxed, she’s warm and engaging. One Oh Nine Events launched a year ago in Mangawhai over bubbles and inspirational speakers, at Bennetts of Mangawhai. Right from the get-go, Natasha has been busy providing professional support and knowledge to those holding their wedding (or event) in Mangawhai or surrounding areas. When it comes to wedding planning Natasha recalls a quote; “Brides are simple. With them, yes means yes, and no means yes, and no means

no, and no means maybe, but maybe means yes and maybe means no!” She believes it’s her job to decipher a client's vision of a perfect day and deliver on that. “It’s an incredible honour to be involved and when a bride tells me ‘this couldn’t have happened without you’ - that’s the biggest compliment I can achieve.” Ever wondered if planners are affordable? Yes! One Oh Nine’s service is curated but customised. Natasha can be involved 12-months out, or literally at the last minute. People are time poor, Natasha’s done all the scouting when it comes to local highlights, value for money, suitable venues,

menu samples, accommodation and so on. There’s less risk of over (or under) catering, the stress is taken away and clients stay on budget. One Oh Nine has given Junction readers a sneaky glimpse at things to consider for the big day, and if you’re reading this as a bridesmaid (or Mother of the bride), there’s some really great tips for keeping your girl (or guy) prepared and calm.

THE PERFECT CAKE FOR THE PERFECT DAY

After a lot of practice, baking with love and taste testing Zarnya started Rosé Crafted Cakes. Based in Matakana, they provide the ultimate in delicious cakes and cupcakes. “With wedding cakes a huge part of every week and the Matakana Market on Saturdays we are kept very busy bringing people sweet happiness in the form of cake,” she says. “I absolutely love creating fresh floral designs and gold accents are a huge feature at the moment but the trends are always changing and I love hearing new ideas.” From traditional fruit cake to dreamy lemon. Talking cake and cake flavours with their customers is a mouth-watering affair. Clients can choose from the firm favourite, chocolate decadence, with rich chocolate ganache; also white chocolate with raspberries or their most popular flavour: passionfruit curd. In a wedding there are just a handful of poignant moments... the I do’s, the dress, the speeches and the cake, and so executing the perfect cake

each and every time is paramount to Rosé Crafted Cakes. “I pride myself on attention to detail and crafting bespoke cakes for all of my customers,” says Zarnya. “I am practically bursting with ideas and technique. Using colours, layering techniques and stencils the artisan cake world is a fun and immensely satisfying job.” In Zarnya’s time as a professional cake maker she says her most memorable cake would be a four tier cake where two families were joining. “The bride and the groom were each bringing two children [to the marriage] and so each child got to have a flavour of their choice and contribute ideas to the decorations.” “I really enjoy the inspiration behind my clients’ cake requests and love hearing each individual story. Wedding cakes are special, many people still keep the top tier of their cake for years to come. The more detail I get, the more I can incorporate it into the cake.”

And as for the baker’s choice? “Neil and I had an indulgent chocolate whiskey cake for our wedding and remember taking it back to our accommodation after our reception and eating it before going to sleep! Chocolate whiskey cake is not on our menu at the moment but it is available for any special requests.” This year Rosé Crafted Cakes has a new product the horizon... some delectable cakesicles - like an ice block, but they are actually made of cake! Look out for them making an appearance at the the Matakana Farmers’ Market soon. They complement cakes at a wedding and offer a fun option for birthdays and celebrations. Rosé Crafted Cakes caters to gluten free, vegan and other allergies, so get in touch with Zarnya to discuss your cake needs.

SALTY RIVER FARM

Daryn, Louise and their two boys started their adventure five years ago when they shifted from their Waiheke Island home of nearly 17 years and bought their little farm in Tauhoa, calling it Salty River Farm because it sits on a tidal arm of the Kaipara. They were determined to make a living off it, especially when they were told it was too small to be viable - a bit under 50 acres. They started breeding goats, marketing and selling the meat. As the business gained traction, the abattoir they were using closed and there was no other feasible option. They were gutted and so were their customers. They picked themselves up and started on the next project - market gardening. Three years later, they produce beautiful lettuces, several kinds of herbs, edible flowers, zucchini,

scallopini, pumpkin, apple cucumbers, silverbeet and kale. “We want to grow and sell veggies the old-fashioned way, fresh, seasonal and without chemicals. A simple idea, but it requires plenty of hard work, especially when you’re new to it,” Daryn says. Old fashioned values are just as important off the farm as they are on it. For Salty River Farm, this means a friendly face and helping hand. “We love our customers, so being personable and getting to know them is a really important part of our business. We know most customers on a first name basis and many of them have been coming to us since the day we opened. They’re part of our business - they’ve watched us grow and we’ve grown with them.” Daryn and Louise find other growers and take their produce to market too.

Having a full vegetable selection is important for the growing community of Hobsonville Point. The Port Albert General Store also gets a regular delivery of lettuces to sell. Along the way, it has been a process of trial and error. “We’ve learnt from talking to people and reading, but nothing beats your own experience, so you just have to jump in and make a start.” They grow the lettuces and some of the herbs using Hydroponics, a method of growing plants out of the ground. Plants receive nutrients via water-based, mineral-rich solutions through an elevated garden bed. The couple choose to grow these in coconut coir and pumice – so after harvest any waste can be composted. It’s a sustainable alternative to traditional farming methods; hydroponic gardens don’t require the

use of fertilisers or chemical pesticides, and they use less water than traditional growing methods. In Daryn and Louise’s case, using filtered, recycled rainwater further reduces their impact on the environment. Other crops are grown in the ground, using the fertile flat paddocks on the river side. The family are proud of their commitment to waste reduction - vegetable scraps from the market are fed to the goats or composted, lettuces are sold wrapped in paper. Cardboard and paper bags used for packaging. They’ve started turning excess produce into pickles and preserves which will be sold in the future. “Coming to the farm has changed our life in many ways. It has made us closer as a family, to appreciate the simple things in life, and has proven that with an open mind you can do a lot on a little farm.”

SAWMILL ‘HOMEBLOCK’ FRESH HOP PALE ALE

There aren’t many rural breweries in New Zealand and being one of them has given the Sawmill Brewery a great opportunity to grow their own hops onsite. “It has been really gratifying to see how interested people are in the bines (not vines) and is a great opportunity for them to engage more in what goes into their beer,” says owner Kirsty McKay. Hops are a perennial and grow voraciously from about September to the harvest of the cones in February. Kirsty initially set up the harvest as a fundraiser for Homebuilders, a local, free organisation offering family support services, but

the hops started to dry out and had to be picked straight away. So instead their whole team was hauled out of the brewery and got them all picked by morning tea. “The cones have an extraordinary aroma when you pick them and our hops are all New Zealand Cascade. They have a pleasant, flowery and spicy, citrus-like quality with a slight grapefruit characteristic.” Cascade hops are grown all over the world but here in Matakana they have distinctive profile, different even from those grown in Motueka because of the terroir. The Sawmill Brewery’s hops have been particularly

floral and herbaceous. This very limited run ‘Homeblock’ Fresh Hopped Pale Ale will be available on tap in the Brewery and Smoko Room from early March.

A STATE OF BEETOPIA

Beetopia NZ only opened its doors in July 2018 and already there has been so much fun and mischief! Their team is made up of a passionate mother and daughter duo, Grass and Michelle, a saint of a husband Anthony and the amazing Kiwi duo Francis and James of F&J New Zealand. At their educational centre and training apiary, Beetopia has held numerous beekeeping courses for beginners. With over 25 years experience as a language teacher in Italy, Grass tells us, “This diverse teaching role is the most delightful experience I have had. Teaching the art of Beekeeping is addictive. I get to watch absolute

beginners become enchanted upon opening our beehives. In fact, nearly every single person has come away from our courses saying, “That was amazing, I never realized bees were so calm yet so exciting!” “The funniest courses have been with children who chatter incessantly until I open a hive, then fall into silence and with a palpable sense of pure awe.” Without gloves, Grass plucks up an unsuspecting drone and places him on her hand for a caress. That is when the first “WOW” is whispered. “How I love that moment!” It is thanks to these courses that they are now

involved with Wainui and Ahuroa primary schools, providing training and equipment for parents and children to continue their hands-on beekeeping. “We consider this to be Beetopia’s small contribution towards creating responsible and caring beekeepers of the future.” Their courses are held from September through to March in Matakana and are run in small numbers with a total of five students per course. “We believe this adds value. Attendees have plenty of hands on time in the hives and the ability to ask one on one questions with our instructor,” she says.

HYPERION WINES – A POTTED HISTORY

John and Jill Crone of Hyperion Wines hit the ground running when they purchased a vineyard site in Matakana in 1994. With some experience of viticulture, an appreciation of wine and John’s Chemical Engineering degree, the couple commuted from Auckland on weekends. Steep hillsides made viticultural activity challenging, but they were keen. Soil type was checked, vine stock selected, a theodolite and post hole borer hired and two vineyards laid out. Pinot Gris and Chardonnay were planted, followed by Cabernet and Merlot in 1995. Thoughts of building a totally new winery were forgotten when part of the original Antipodean vineyard came up for sale in Tongue Farm Road. “We liked the ‘converted cowshed’ winery, the history, existing vines and American WWII barn for storing machinery!” The couple eagerly attended seminars, workshops, and visited various wine regions over the next few years during the Romeo Bragato NZ Wine Awards. “160 wineries were in NZ when we started, now there are 713!” The name ‘Hyperion’ was finally decided on, their designer came up with its classic logo, and the main label colour chosen for their red wine - ‘ferment puce’! “Initially we had a small grape press. When helpers left we were still burning the midnight oil. A beer and pie kept us going.” Later, a larger Vaslin press was obtained which sped the job up! 1997 saw their first vintage produced - their Cabernet/Merlot was awarded Silver in the Liquorland Top 100. The next vintage was superb with 1998 ‘Gaia’ Merlot receiving a Gold Medal and Trophy for Best Merlot Predominant wine at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, (100% Merlot); an Australian wine guru rated it 96/100, best Merlot in Australasia. Also ’98 ‘Kronos’ Cabernet/Merlot scored Silver medals. “A few years later, some good vintages got into top end London restaurants; several were Michelin starred.” In January 2008, Hyperion experienced another international ‘hats off’ when an article on Matakana appeared in the New York Times’ Sunday Supplement featuring the vineyard as the lead photo.

After 12 years of running between two vineyards with 6000 vines between them, change came in 2008 upon receiving an unsolicited offer for the Omaha Flats vineyard. This led to a new enterprise - purchasing adjoining land on Whitmore Road with country cottage, since renovated with designer décor for luxury accommodation as ‘Hyperion Heights’, attracting local and international visitors. Visitors to their home vineyard, Tongue Farm Road, can expect a picturesque setting among rustic outbuildings, a tasting room with stunning views, and beautiful macrocarpa ceilings in the barrel room which hosts larger groups for wine appreciation. All winemaking processes happen on site - fermenting in tanks, barrel aging, bottling, corking, capsuling and labelling. White wines cool ferment in a reefer (container) alongside. “Our 2019 vintage is looking promising. It’s our 23rd vintage!” John and Jill enthuse, “We’ve had consistent sunshine, and very little rain - the crop’s in good order, it’s been thinned, but the fat lady is yet to sing.” Early March has seen them pick their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and they are both looking great. To conclude, an Old French Proverb from Jill Crone “for John, the winemaker”: ‘In water one sees one’s own face; but in wine one beholds the heart of another.’ 09 422 9375 www.hyperionwines.co.nz

DESIGN

ONE-IN-A-MILLION PAVILION WORDS

Celene Busher and Darnell Nepia have built their dream home on a one hectare lifestyle block in Algies Bay, and they are very happy with the result. “It’s the Kiwi dream really – that’s how I feel about it,” says Celene. “It’s light, sunny and warm, and there’s space for the kids to run and play. We’re here for the long haul.” They were living in London when Celene fell pregnant with their first child. “I couldn’t imagine living in London with a family so we started looking at property in New Zealand. We sent family members to look at this section in Algies Bay and purchased it without having seen it ourselves.” The design started with space rather than substance after Celene fell in love with a photo of an internal courtyard. They contracted Designpoint, a local architect and landscaping company who came up with the concept for the house. “They had done a pavilion house before and it included the things I wanted – the internal courtyard and gable pitch ceilings,” says Celene. “We didn't have a lot of money but there were some design elements which weren't up for negotiation, as they were a key part in creating the home I envisioned. The high ceilings, large windows and the big bi-fold doors give it a great sense of space, and I love open plan living areas.” Celene and Darnell were on a strict budget so did as much of the building work as they could.

LUKE

WILLIAMSON

Celene explains, “We were originally going to build just the back pavilion, but we had our second child so decided to build both pavilions at once.” Coresteel did the framing, structural and cladding work, and got it to lock-up stage. Then Brown Brothers Builders did the internal work, but they let Celene and Darnell come in and do anything they could to save some money. And they were obviously very capable, as demonstrated by the large, elegant deck built by Darnell. The two pavilions are clad in ebony Coloursteel, but the strong, black exterior is softened by light, white living spaces inside, and ample doors and windows. The two pavilions are connected by a five metre glass linkway. As you arrive at the front door, you can see through a window, through the linkway, and straight out into the paddocks beyond. Another striking feature of the house is the contemporary, clean interior design, a result of Celene’s expertise in the field and impeccable taste. “I’ve been doing homeware and fashion styling since I left school, primarily in the advertising industry. However, over the last few years, I have transitioned to interior design, which utilises the same skill set, but also brings in the customer relationship skills I learned as an account manager.”

Celene Interiors, based in Algies Bay, has been busy recently with a selection of local clients, working on new builds, renovations and commercial accommodation but Celene is preparing to kick the business up a gear this year, now that the children have gotten a bit older. She’s upgraded her website, is networking with builders and architects, and is excited about taking on new projects. “Building our house gave me a huge insight into the ins and outs of how a job works, and I can bring that knowledge and expertise to other people’s projects.” She started with a passion for spaces, but something more solid lists among her favourite features of the house. “I adore our concrete floors! These were like my baby of the build. The concrete polisher said it is not often he sees such a high standard of concrete like ours anymore. The warmth retained in the floors is amazing because we get all day sun.” In the end, though, for Celene, the house is about family. “I love watching the kids ride their bikes around the section and waterslide down the hill. I’m sentimental about things like that so it’s great to think we have enough room if our grown-up children wanted to live here one day.” Coffee table and bedside tables supplied by Soren Liv.

NOBLE AIMS WORDS

LUKE

WILLIAMSON

The front room of the AIM (Adults in Motion) house is sunny and crowded. Everyone has just arrived back from a walk to the supermarket and it’s time for sharing the weekend’s highlights. As the guest, I go first and relate my story of a nice surf at Omaha, even though I fell off a few times – which gets a laugh from the others. As we work our way around the group, there’s news of birthday parties, ten-pin bowling, a trip to Tauranga, Sunday church, and more. Then it’s morning tea time.

was concerned about the absence of transition facilities for her child who was leaving school. AIM fills that void with its Warkworth base, which is open Monday to Thursday, and currently caters for 13 participants and employs six staff.

So what, you ask? What’s interesting about this story? What’s interesting is that all the participants at AIM are intellectually disabled in some way and they come for companionship, skills training, goal setting, time out from home, and trips out into the community. I was surprised how many faces I recognised from seeing them around town.

AIM runs a varied programme that includes inhouse things like cooking, sewing, maths, art, music and writing. However, getting out into the community is a high priority. “We go for walks to the shops, go to the gym, visit the donkey sanctuary, go to the disco, and help with native bush planting,” Corinne tells me.

Corinne Lake is the manager of the facility and tells me she loves her job. “There’s an amazing array of personalities and it’s very satisfying when they show you something they have made at cooking or sewing. I feel proud and they feel like family.”

Funding comes from a range of sources and participants pay a small daily fee. Corinne says,

AIM was established in 2006 by a parent who

“We have to watch our finances carefully and we can’t always do what we want to do. We have to ‘save up’ to take everyone out for a day.” AIM is always on the lookout for volunteers to help out at their Warkworth base, but one of the big challenges is to find locations where their participants can get work experience. Corinne explains, “We have three participants who go to the donkey sanctuary on Tuesdays to help out. We also had some participants working at the Home Builders op shop but that closed last year. They loved going there. A staff member is available to facilitate these placements so we’d love to hear from anyone who is able to help.” This amazing service deserves your support and, if the hugs and handshakes I got on my short visit are anything to go by, it will be richly rewarded.

ART

OIL AND CLAY WORDS

ZOE

“I’m inspired by people, 'love them to draw; they have personality, an expression or a posture to capture. But even my still lifes have personality they move and flow, they’re alive too.” Leigh’s Awa Gilgren is calm, observant and knowing, with a ready smile. Long red hair drapes over her shoulders; creativity courses through her being. Her home is a collection of textures, spaces, curves and lines, memories as portrait, framed paint and figure. A homely embrace of shadow and light greets those visiting, imbued with the scent of coffee, paint and something similar to thyme in its sweetness and familiarity. Awa works with ceramics and oil painting, creating a wide range of work rich in stylised form and expression. “I got to a certain point in my work when I was studying at Hungry Creek, before I had my daughter. I did an exhibition of ten different shelves (which were made from repurposed pottery bats), each shelf displayed a whole room’s setting in ceramic miniatures; each had something a bit off - a chair toppled over, a bedroom with paper airplanes littering the floor. All the scenes raised questions while creating a dreamy aesthetic,” Awa says. “I love the meditation of sitting down and doing small things. Small but many. They are precious - a whole world in your hands,” she says, cupping her paint-smudged fingers together. Art collector Sir James Wallace chose one of her pieces to add to the Wallace Arts Trust - a treasure trove of one of New Zealand’s most important art collections. Awa hopes to make more of these miniatures in the future. “The idea of ceramic as a surface to paint and draw on is also interesting to me… I played with glazes for a while, enjoying their organic nature, but I really enjoy the drawing and painting on of imagery.” Dishes and tiles by Awa are adorned with faces and figures, stylised, abstract and finished with unassuming glazes.

Let us make your dream a reality! 44

GIMRING

Raising her vivacious five year old daughter, Wini, has naturally meant less productive studio time for Awa over the last few years - creative time became collaboration time. “She wanted to be involved, of course, so I started cutting Wini her own board. She exhibited with me at my last two shows.” Awa smiles - she has bigger plans in the works for the future. “It’s my dream to have a room full of blank surfaces,” she says, of her upcoming painting exhibition. “I’m going to have fifty-two ready to go. It’s that thrill thing - that juicy, ecstatic feeling before something begins.” “Peter Gossage was an early influence. I grew up with his images, copied them, and adopted his style a lot at the beginning,” she says. Her grandmother, Jan Dowse, was another significant influence, and one close to her heart. Jan had an art gallery in Gisborne, and grandchildren who visited often. Works were exhibited at the gallery by artists such as Brent Wong, Graham Sydney and Don Binney. “It was an abundance of culture. It was all ocean waves rolling in next to the windows, loud classical music being played, gin and tonics and art,” she grins. “I’ve always had an appreciation of creation. There’s no other way I’d rather spend my time. I want to create, not take away. To be an artist of the people I struggle with the money aspect of the art world, the expense of it. Smaller, more affordable art can reach more people. I like that.” Create Matakana and the Fenton Gallery are currently exhibiting some of Awa's pieces. Keep an eye out for more details on her upcoming exhibition soon.

INTERNATIONAL BLUEGRASS AT WHANGATEAU HALL WORDS

JENINE

ABARBANEL

Bluegrass is seeing a renaissance in New Zealand with this year’s firstever national bluegrass festival, Kiwigrass, held in Hamilton in February. Whangateau Hall is right in the middle of this resurgence of the genre’s popularity, often hosting international touring bluegrass bands. Two of the Kiwigrass headline acts, The Lonely Heartstring Band (from the USA) and Nine Mile Creek (from Australia) played at Whangateau Hall as part of their trips to New Zealand. This was The Lonely Heartstring Band’s second tour of New Zealand, and second visit to Whangateau Hall. They sold out two showings in 2018, and also sold out their show this year. LHSB is playing some of the finest bluegrass anywhere at the moment; it is difficult to find a more accomplished and entertaining band anywhere. Their debut album, “Deep Water,” can arguably be described as perfect, with absolutely beautiful original songs and some outstanding covers, including Paul Simon’s “Graceland” which challenges the original in beauty and execution. This year their visit to New Zealand coincided with the launch of their second album, “Smoke and Ashes.” “Smoke and Ashes” deftly avoids the “sophomore slump” often seen with bands’ second albums. Every song is captivating and powerful, with the songs “The Other Side” and “Borderlands” two absolute standouts. George Clements leads with superb song writing and singing skills, and is ably supported by his bandmates, starting with his twin brother Charles Clements (double bass), with whom he demonstrates the sweet flawless harmonies that only close kin seem to be able to achieve. Patrick M’Gonigle (fiddle) chimes in with the third part harmony so beautifully that you’d think he was a Clements as well. This central trio are supported with virtuoso instrumentalists Maddie Witler on mandolin and the drily hilarious Gabe Hirschfeld on banjo. The five musicians have a stage presence and performance style that is engaging for all audiences.

Nine Mile Creek are stalwarts of the burgeoning bluegrass scene in Melbourne, Victoria. All four gentlemen sing and write original material, each in a unique and fun style. They also play plenty of familiar traditional bluegrass, country and folk tunes, with Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” always featuring as a crowd favourite. Nine Mile Creek is led by Mark Pottenger on mandolin and the lion’s share of the lead singing, supported by Colin Weight on the five-string banjo, Andrew Barcham on the double bass, and Doug Wallace on guitar. Together, these four play traditional and contemporary bluegrass as fine as you’d ever hope to hear. Their show is fun and funny, and the crowd didn’t let them leave the stage until they’d played multiple encore songs. Whangateau Hall is leaving the bluegrass music behind for a while with upcoming offerings of jazz, folk-rock from the Netherlands, and singersongwriters from both the USA and New Zealand. You can find the schedule of upcoming concerts on the Whangateau Hall’s website.

A&P SHOW 2019 The Warkworth A&P 2019 show was packed full with a great entertainment and family fun. From rural shows to sheep racing, tractors to vintage cars and pony rides to spinning teacups, there was something for everyone. Mahurangi Community Sport and Recreation brought back team madness and old-fashioned fun to this year's Warkworth A&P Show with their team challenge ‘Mahu Silly Bugg#rs’. Teams of four competed for the honour of being crowned Warkworth's champions. Each team completed as many challenges as possible, as quickly as possible, to earn maximum points - all whilst racing against another team! Activities included shenanigans such as mini bike races, shake-ya-bootie, net crawl, nut stacking, egg and spoon race, slip’n’sliding and more. It was silly, side-splitting, senseless and fun! facebook.com/WarkworthAandPLifestyleShow www.warkworthshow.co.nz

SAWN TOGETHER WORDS

KATHY

HUNTER

Anyone who knows the legendary Leigh Sawmill Café will agree that the award-winning venue has had an enormous impact on the New Zealand music industry, and certainly on the little harbour village of Leigh. The Guinness family, headed by Grattan and Marguerite, bought it in 1996 and over the course of 22 years transformed it from a working sawmill into the iconic live music venue, restaurant and accommodation it is today. November 2018 saw new owner Craig Andersen taking over the ‘Mill. (Craig’s also the managing director of Cotto on K’Rd, which won Metro Peugeot Best New Restaurant 2018.) A very special event coming up in April will acknowledge this transition – and the history of the Sawmill itself. It’s a personal crusade of Saffron Guinness, grand-daughter of Grattan, who tragically lost his life last year at Goat Island. Saffron is making a documentary about the Sawmill and the musicians, artists, rebels and renegades who have made it what it is today. Dubbed ‘Sawblade’, the film will encompass archival footage intercut with new interviews to be filmed on Saturday 6 April at Saffron’s ‘New Era’ party. “I was six months old when the Sawmill opened,” says Saffron. “I was carried around the kitchens and the bar in a front pack. I crawled across the dancefloor and through the vegetable gardens. The people who worked there, the performers and the regulars became an extended whanau for myself, my siblings and my cousins. “I worked there as a teenager, but left at 19 to go and study in London. Coming back for my grandfather’s funeral triggered a kind of epiphany for me. I realised that someone had to document his legacy – all the stories, the hard work, the fun and the love… this epic thing that was, and continues to be, the Leigh Sawmill.” The New Era party is intended to raise funds to help produce Sawblade the documentary. It’ll bring together a nostalgic line up of artists and guests at an extravagant event to be captured on camera. There’ll be entertainment from 3pm till late, with an excellent selection of some of the DJs, musicians and theatrical performers hosted by the Sawmill over the years. Exceptional food utilising local produce will include paella and Argentinian barbecued lamb. There’ll be a Sawblade silent auction too – open online now, it will finish on the night of the party. This will include donations from local art-stars Mike Petre, Louise McRae, Star Gossage, Vicky Fanning, Andy Turner and Morgan Haines, plus plentiful other largesse from local businesses, artisans and vineyards. Start bidding – and get your New Era tickets now to ensure you’re a part of this epic Leigh Sawmill event! Tickets $35 from Under the Radar, kids under 15 free with adults

HAPPENINGS ANZAC DAY SERVICE AT THE MATAKANA WAR MEMORIAL Matakana’s 2019 ANZAC Service will honour the “Unsung Heroes” of the First World War - men and women who served in roles often forgotten, facing the same conditions of war without carrying a gun, risking their lives and suffering the same wounds and fate. Brave medics fought to keep our soldiers alive - doctors, nurses, stretcher-bearers, orderlies, ambulance drivers, chaplains and dentists. Veterinarians did the same for horses, donkeys, mules and camels that accompanied soldiers onto the battlefield. Support workers fed, clothed and supplied our soldiers. The service program will include three guest speakers, the Matakantata Choir and a solo performance by Claude Poulsen.
