Driving the Dream If you go and see Tom Roberts at Allen’s Auto Services, yes, you’ll get excellent car servicing, warrants, tyres, balancing and all the things you would expect from a mechanic, but there’s also a little extra hidden under the Allen’s bonnet. Words Luke Williamson

If you go and see Tom Roberts at Allen’s Auto Services, yes, you’ll get excellent vehicle servicing, WOFs and repairs, tyres, wheel alignments and all the things you would expect from a mechanic, but there’s also a little extra hidden under the Allen’s bonnet. If you’re into racing, saloon cars and custom cars, Tom’s your man. That’s because he’s a passionate saloon car racer and, this year, placed third in the NZ Saloon Racing Championship. After two intense days of racing against 45 other contenders, he was perilously close to winning but had to settle for an impressive third and the right to wear the official 3NZ on his car for the season ahead. “I always said I would give up if I got a national number on my car but it’s coming early so I’ll keep going for a bit longer,” he laughs. When Tom left school, he wanted to train as a mechanic but there were no openings for apprenticeships or jobs so he studied horticulture for a couple of years. “I really enjoyed that, and still do, but it’s something that will have to wait until I retire.” He finally got his chance to train as a mechanic in 1998 before going on to buy his current business from Allen Harvey just under 10 years ago. “Racing has been a passion of mine since

I was a kid,” explains Tom. “We used to go out to the Whangateau race track when I was young and Dad would take us to Waikaraka Park.” Tom caught the racing bug when he was eight years old and saw a Corvette saloon car come out onto the dirt track. “I thought, I want one of those one day. Twenty-five years later, the dream came true,” he smiles. The adrenaline of racing gets Tom going but it’s brain exercise as well. “There’s lots of physics involved with adjusting crossweights, tyres, suspension, shocks – it’s a mad science. We need to adjust the balance of the race car after each race in a night.” “None of this could be possible without the amazing Pit crew that join me for each meeting and my main man/crew chief Josh Dallow. Words don't describe his passion for the racing and commitment to our racing team which has got us to where we are now.” It’s not easy to finance a race car and Tom is very grateful to his sponsors who are well displayed on the car, and especially his wife, Chloe. “It’s a very selfish sport but I have a very understanding and supportive wife.”

Business and racing have been interrupted by Covid this year and that’s been tough for Tom. “It hasn’t been easy for the business but we’ve held it together and we’ve kept all our staff in jobs. A huge thanks to our loyal customers for supporting local business in these hard times.” “I’m looking forward to getting back out on the track but things are tight for us and our sponsors so we’ll have to see how that goes. The shop puts the food on the table and the dirt car takes it away,” Tom laughs. Defending, or improving upon, his great result for 2020 might not be possible in 2021 because the event is scheduled for 30 January at Riverside speedway Invercargill, exactly the same day Tom and Chloe’s third child is due. “My wife is 100% supportive of my racing but I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to pull this one off,” Tom laughs. So, whether you’ve got a bog-standard family sedan or a track-worthy race car, Allen’s Auto Services will do the right thing for you and your vehicle, and, if you ask nicely, Tom just might show you 3NZ so you can appreciate what a beauty, and a beast, it is. www.facebook.com/allensautoservicestom

The Historic Jane Gifford Scow Words Dave Parker

From the 1800’s, almost 130 of similar construction used to ply New Zealand’s waters mostly as transport ‘workhorses’. These barges were built to be capable of navigating narrow tidal estuaries and creeks where the country's first communities settled. As a flat-bottomed scow, they could rest in an upright position even when the tide was out, making it easy to load and unload freight and stock. The Meiklejohns and Darrochs were involved in the industry as far back as 1873. Whangateau and Big Omaha was a hive of maritime activity in those days. The Jane Gifford’s history goes back to 1908 when Davey Darroch, a boat builder of repute built ‘the Jane’ in Whangateau, primarily to carry granite from Parkinson and Bouskill quarries in Coromandel to Auckland. She was so named after the immigrant sailing ship Jane Gifford that brought George Darroch and his family to New Zealand. In those early days she also carried and transported shell, stock, road metal, timber and cement within the Hauraki Gulf. The Jane Gifford had several owners/ skippers, among them Reg Collins and Ron and Karl Kasper. Jane was based in Warkworth from 1916 to 1937 when she

eventually moved to the Tamaki River in search of more work. The Subritsky Shipping Company took ownership and in 1985 she was acquired by the Waiuku Museum Trust and taken to Waiuku to serve as a tourism vessel, under sail, on the Manukau Harbour. Three years after her relaunch there, she no longer passed a survey and was transported back to Okahu Bay where she sat for some four years. A Warkworth Trust had already formed and in 2005 purchased the Jane and brought the near derelict vessel home. Funds were needed for its restoration and applied for. The Trust received substantial grants from several national community trusts and the Rotary Club of Warkworth. Local residents strongly supported the project, as did Lions Club of Warkworth and assistance was also given in kind by local businesses, and still is to this day. The restoration was undertaken at Robertson’s boat yard, in Warkworth, and boat builders rallied to help restore her along with enormous help from dedicated volunteers. Proudly the Jane Gifford was relaunched in May 2009. Since then the Jane has offered hourly excursions on the historic Mahurangi

River. She is also available for private charter and is regularly seen carrying many community, service and heritage groups. Weddings and funeral ceremonies are also held onboard. Youth onboard training is now a feature with hundreds of school students and youth yachting participating. Currently, only crew and volunteers are able to take the Jane out under full sail. Additional skippers and volunteers are currently being recruited for the new season. In 2019, the Trust was renamed the Jane Gifford Maritime Heritage Trust and is still supported by an active Steering Committee who assist with the day-to-day management of the scow. The future looks exciting thanks to a recent government grant of $4m, and the Mahurangi River dredging project can now proceed. Warkworth can expect to see many more activities and craft return to the Mahurangi River. For all future sailings visit the website. For enquiries and bookings call Dave on 0274849935 or email dh.parker@xtra.co.nz. www.janegifford.org.nz

Opening Time After a challenging ten months the Sawmill Brewery + Smoko Room is ready to open again following the fire that badly damaged the building in October 2019.

The construction work got underway in January and was then held up by the Covid-19 lockdown. The team are relieved to be back in their building, brewing onsite again and opening the doors to the Smoko Room. Keeping customers supplied with their beer was a priority for Sawmill and they were brewing in other premises within two days of the fire. “We brewed at 13 different breweries over the last ten months and really appreciate the support shown by the brewing community in New Zealand,” says boss Mike Sutherland. “Brewing in our own premises is really important to us and the reason we are able to lead our industry in making our environmental impact a positive one. Brewing here we have total control over our resource use - water and energy in particular.” The 54 solar panels used by the brewery

have been repaired and reinstalled along with a more sophisticated wastewater system. Customers visiting the Smoko Room can expect to see a few changes inside as the brewery itself has been reconfigured to make it more efficient. Four silos have been installed outside the building for malted barley which takes 12,000 plastic grain sacks out of circulation each year. The Smoko Room will be familiar with new furniture from local designers Small Space, ceramics from Vicki Fanning at Frolic and textiles by local artist Janna Isbey. While the Smoko Room kitchen was closed Head Chef Will Michell made the most of the downtime on internships in Sydney at the Fish Butchery and Wellington’s Hiakai learning about Maori cooking techniques and ingredients. There will be new dishes

on the menu to showcase these experiences alongside old favourites like the spicy venison ribs and the whole pan-fried flounder. “The ingredients available here are phenomenal – we are able to source cheese, oysters, olive oil, kaimoana, beef, bread, olives, fruit, vegetables, native herbs, kombucha and wine from our region.” Mike and Kirsty have been blown away by the support they and their team received over the last few months. “We’ve come back from the fire more adaptable and more determined than before. We aim to serve our community well and embrace the ethos of our B-Corp certification – using business as a force for good. To everyone in this community that helps make that happen, our sincerest thanks.” www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz 1004 Leigh Road, Matakana

Belle Chèvre Creamery Belle Chèvre Creamery is a boutique paddock-to-plate producer of goat cheese. Being awarded with three gold and three silver medals at the New Zealand Champion of Cheese Awards has been the highlight of the year for the owners, David and Jennifer Rodrigue.

The couple live on a farmlet overlooking Waipu township and the sea and started trading last November with just ten goats on the milking stand. Jennifer had dabbled in cheesemaking as a hobbyist, entering the New Zealand Specialists Cheesemakers Association’s Champion of Cheese Awards in 2018 and 2019 and winning a trophy for Home Crafted Cheesemaker of the year in 2019. This was the push she needed to build the processing facility, register with MPI and make her products available to the public. Jennifer is currently registered to make cheese from the milk she and David harvest from goats on their farm. David is the “chief goat slave” and loves his job! He is currently pampering his pregnant princesses with pedicures and hand cut olive and pittosporum branches, while they are on maternity leave.

The season will kick off at Belle Chèvre Creamery in late August this year when the goats start kidding. The Anglo Nubian goat kids are super cute and a joy to behold. The doelings are hand reared, making friends with David and Jennifer early in life so they are happy to be handled for husbandry jobs and in the milking process. The males are sold as breeding bucks or as pets to lifestyle blocks or calf club kids. The milking does all have names and wear a bell as is the tradition in Europe. Jennifer specialises in European style cheeses that are traditionally made with goats milk. Belle Chèvre means ‘beautiful goat in French’, and Chèvre (pronounced ‘shev’) is also the name of the traditional soft goat cheese. Jennifer’s Chèvre won a gold medal and she was awarded a silver medal for her marinated version. In addition to other French styled cheese

like Camembert and Valencay, she also makes a Halloumi, Feta and several hard cheeses. You can taste the cheeses at the Waipu Boutique Sunday Markets, September through April and David delights in converting people’s opinions of what they think goat cheese tastes like: “It’s not goaty!” The couple believe that this is because of the goats, the quality of their feed, and the small batch processing achieving ultimate freshness. Other reasons to “Go Goat” is that goats are easy on the environment and easy on your digestive system. Many people that don’t tolerate dairy can have goat milk products. Bounty of the Land Ora’s Farm was born when a teacher and naval architect put down their pens and picked up their shovels. Working with nature had always been a dream, but that didn’t make giving up both stable careers easy.

New Zealand is the long term home that Ora and Itay Simhony have chosen, after decades of a semi-nomadic life across the world in Israel, The Netherlands, and China. Their global perspective, and cuisine, had shown time and time again how seldom Kiwi’s include mushrooms in our cooking. After significant research on European mushroom farms, Ora and Itay came back to New Zealand with a mission statement to diversify the kiwi market with delicious and exotic mushrooms. Mushrooms lie at the intersection of great taste and bountiful nutrients, however, growing mushrooms on a large scale is challenging. It requires patience, trial and error, and consistent results to grow the limited mushrooms strains that we have in New Zealand. They need careful attention to temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, and regulation of the substrate pH, air circulation, and light! All of this with the stringent requirement for a sterile environment to stop the growth of undesired (though typically

harmless) moulds and bacteria. Ora and Itay’s commitment to creating a sustainable, ethical, and honest business, growing 100% natural mushrooms has kept Ora’s Farm busy engineering and learning on both the technological and personal fronts to keep their mushrooms, and business, growing healthily. It is important to them that Ora’s Farm production does not negatively impact the environment. All Ora’s Farm products are packaged in recycled paper or cardboard, and the used mushroomsubstrate bags are recycled by their customers in their gardens. With the closure of restaurants, and the barring of cruise ships to New Zealand waters, Ora’s Farm regular customer base shrunk extensively due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With hard work and a bit of luck, Ora and Itay were able to make lemonade from their particular situation. The first move was to pivot online and sell their mushrooms directly to consumers during

lockdown. Advertised largely via word of mouth, their community of customers quickly grew. Freshly picked oyster and shiitake mushrooms were delivered to the doors of customers in Mangawhai, Wellsford, and Auckland. As a result of their shrunken customer base, Ora and Itay began drying their mushrooms to create flavoursome umami stock and mushroom seasoning powder. Ora’s Farm is New Zealand’s largest supplier of Oyster mushrooms and in the last couple of years they have introduced four new varieties of mushrooms: Pink Oyster mushrooms, Lion’s Mane, Pioppino and Shiitake mushrooms. In 2019, Ora’s Farm was a finalist in the New Zealand Artisan Awards in the ‘Fresh Produce’ category. Ropesmith Robin Marsh Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

Canadian Ropesmith, Robin Marsh has worked her rigging magic on all the big regattas – from America’s Cup to Volvo Ocean Race – over the past fifteen years. She recently moved to Snells Beach with Kiwi husband Brad, and is starting work with one of the America’s Cup teams, getting them ready for the big events next year.

stronger and lighter than metal,” Robin says. “So I create a lot of custom-made rope fittings that used to be made from metal. I also build systems to make the manoeuvres as easy as possible for the crew, using for example blocks and tackles.” Robin sailed from Canada to New Zealand for the first time when 19 years of age.

Being part of the shore team means travelling around with the racing yachts, meeting them in each port to check the equipment and rigging. Her most recent overseas job was supporting the Swedish team Artemis in Bermuda.

“My dad said at dinner one night that he’d like to have our yacht in New Zealand for the 2002 America’s Cup – so who would help getting it down there? I'm the youngest of three siblings, and we all took turns sailing the boat on the different legs down.”

"Essentially you’re like a pit team for a race car,” says Robin. “We spend most of our time on the boats or in a container, which we turn into a workshop and ship around the world with us. So we go to all these amazing places - but mostly see the inside of the 40-foot container!"

“My sister and I ended up sailing down the Pacific together twice. The most dangerous thing that happened was probably the night we hit a whale. It was such a dramatic motion, and we couldn’t see much in the dark – I was sure we were sinking. The whole side of the boat got bent, but we were lucky not to take in water or lose the mast.”

As a rigger, you are responsible for making sure the rope is strong enough for its task, also taking things like weight, stretch and chafe into consideration. “You’re always trying to save weight on a boat to make it faster. Some rope is now

Robin was part of the all-women Volvo Team SCA for three months in 2013 and has crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times, covered the Mediterranean, and competed in two Sydney to Hobart races, sailing over

45,000 miles in total. In a still male-dominated industry, a gender-neutral name can lead to interesting situations. “I joined a Russian team for a while, who picked me up at the airport. I found their team van and walked up to introduce myself. The team just looked at me, then one of them said, very slowly, in very broken English: ‘You are not a man?’ I laughed and said ‘Glad we got that cleared up!" In 2015, Robin and husband Brad started Caniwi Rigging – short for Canadian-Kiwi. Brad, also a pro-sailor, works on the Sail Grand Prix, a series of regattas around the world in foiling catamaran F50s. Robin says her next goal would be more architectural rigging, maybe even artworks. Since having children, Robin has been doing most of the ropework from their home workshop. “Having a baby was pretty easy for me – I'm used to sleeping in three-hour shifts and at least you're warm and dry at home!” www.facebook.com/caniwirigging 021 44 00 45

MASTER CRAFTSWOMAN

Barn Park Gollum had ‘his precious’ in the form of a ring and there is no question that a stable of classic Volkswagens and Porsches would fall into the same category. This passionate New Zealand-based collector (classic Porches, VW Beetles and the VW Kombi) having his lifelong dream, to create a building that would both protect his investment and create an environment for enjoying his collection and the finer things in life, has now been fulfilled. A Customkit barn with high ceilings, sound-proofing and temperature control capabilities was the starting point. The burnished concrete floors sparkle under the reflection of the industrial-style lighting. Overall the interior look is reminiscent of the German Bauhaus design style, one where art and creativity have a direct relationship with technology and peoples’ living requirements. The black painted LVL beams and ply walls and ceilings make for a dramatic backdrop that is both rugged and refined. Clean lines and open spaces dominate the areas dedicated to the parking and work areas for the automobiles. Near one of the entrances is a luxury area pandering to human needs, including a bespoke bar area, fireplace and lounge area. Sexy, sophisticated and stylish certainly applies to the world of Porsche and this alluring Barn Park pleasure dome.

Lived in Luxe Words Maddie Long

Two pavilions joined in a loose ‘H’ formation and were positioned to make the most of the views towards an old stand of Totara trees to the east and to the creek and hills in the distant looking southwest. There are some industrial buildings in the neighbouring vicinity and the owners were keen to reflect that into the design and also reflect their own farming heritage. The house was conceived as an industrial structure with strong shapes and dark colours, with elements including steel beams, Nu-Wall aluminium cladding, band sawn timber flooring, exposed timber trusses

hang out spaces in the living and dining areas inside, were vital to the design and functionality of the home. Providing easy access to outdoor areas for entertaining and enjoying the swimming pool that extends from between the two pavilions out to the lawn beyond was also key.

“The building had lots of elements that were a risk creatively but when you step into the house it is very relaxing and captures the creativity of the many local craftsmen and women who worked on the project.”

“We worked with the inspiration of the stone colours on the exterior of the house to bring those colours into the interior - you can see this executed in the choices of furniture and the soft furnishings to complement with the industrial feel of the home,” says Lauren. “The lighting chosen throughout was also to be a highlight that would be hero pieces - in particular one piece of lighting is the Timothy Oulton chandelier that hangs in the void of the stairwell and above the masculine interior bridge.”

As construction progressed, Cato builders found and sourced recycled Matai timber that they stripped backed and oiled to provide a contrast to the darker colours, and added some split red bricks with LED strip lighting to create a cosy feel to the kitchen. Lauren sourced an old wool press, and added soft furnishings and warm lighting that complemented the dark colours, and from the first day the owners moved in, “the house felt like it had its own stories to tell”. Creating separate spaces - a library area, games and music room, home office, and

While the landscaping is a work in progress, functionality is a big factor, so there are different spaces at different times of year for playing sport or entertaining. www.houseofcreatives.co.nz www.instagram.com/house_of_creatives

Designed by Paul Chapman, from The Design Chaps, the brief for this rural Warkworth property was to create a new and modern house with ‘passive solar principles’, and technology using solar and a Tesla powerwall, while also capturing some of the history of the owners’ upbringing. Completed in 2020 by Cato Builders (nine months to move in!), this fabulous home captures both light and warmth from the sun in at least one or more rooms at any time of day, especially vital for the winter months.

Big Changes for Little Projects Head of Rodney Architectural Design Studio, Bruce Campbell has welcomed the pending change to building consents for small home projects. These changes see those looking to do building work that fall under the new exemptions not having to apply or pay for a building consent to do the work. "I believe these changes will save time and money and assist in driving the building and construction sector post Covid-19 recovery," says Bruce. Whilst these new rules will remove a lot of the frustrating red-tape for the DIYers, as they will soon no longer need consent for a variety of small projects around their homes, he did however warn that these changes

are not a free license for home improvement enthusiasts to go crazy as "these new exemptions will utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners scheme and that the work must still meet the Building Code and any other site specific requirements”.

• Carports with a maximum floor area of 40sqm • V erandas and porches with a maximum size of 30sqm • Outdoor fireplaces or ovens

Florals To Dry For Words Maddie Long

Wandering Willow specialises in dried flowers products and services but not as you may know it! “My arrangements are vibrant and modern. Each piece is lovingly hand-made with an emphasis on design and detail.” Creator, Yuki Pogoni grew up in Leigh, attending Mahurangi College, before gaining a Degree in Fashion from Massey University. She has spent the last five years fine tuning her design skills creating wedding dresses but longed to use her creativity in other ways. “A dried palm wall piece was installed in the workroom and that was my inspiration!” She began to dry flowers at home and steadily it became a full time occupation -

becoming ‘Wandering Willow’. “My shed has been converted into a floral wonderland, packed with drying flowers and palms hanging from the ceiling, vases covering one wall, and completed bouquets and arrangements ready to send throughout New Zealand.” “I would say my design aesthetic is leaning towards Bohemian - I just love the colours and textures associated with it.” Every arrangement is thought out for each individual customer and what they’re wanting to achieve. Wandering Willow produces everything from wreaths, to bouquets, vase

arrangements to retail spaces and so much more. Pieces can be customised - perfect for weddings, and events. “We work closely with the brides or grooms to bring their vision to life,” she says. “Flowers have always been associated with happiness and bringing joy to people which is what I am hoping to achieve with my designs.” For more designs and information find Wandering Willow on Facebook or Instagram. www.facebook.com/wanderingwillownz www.instagram.com/wanderingwillownz

Your Event and Big Day - Your Way While it’s natural to follow tradition, there’s a continuing movement towards new and innovative ways of doing things - creating events that are simple, sustainable and good for the environment. Photos Wild Spirit Wedding Photography

An increasing trend to host weddings and events in non-traditional venues, means utilising spaces that are meaningful and reflect the couples’ personalities. They’re acknowledging the past, thinking about the present, and doing what’s right for them, while being genuine, creative and brave about their choices.

to create an event to celebrate. A wedding planner might then be called in to coordinate everything on the day, so guests and the couple can make the most of the occasion.

There’s also a growing shift towards DIY weddings and while it’s undeniably additional work, there’s something really special about family and friends coming together

Glass and serveware is another important consideration. As we see a shift to more outdoor venues – think marquees in your favourite location – stemless glassware

A lot goes into a wedding, and it’s realistic there will be some waste. More and more couples are opting for eco-friendly options as our consciousness grows around what we’re doing and how it impacts on the world around us. Couples want a wedding that doesn’t ‘cost the earth’ so we’re more likely to see home-grown flowers and produce from the local farmers’ market and suppliers.

In order to create a wedding at your desired venue you are probably going to need to consider hiring items. Think about your space and how you want to use it. If you’re having a seated reception, you’ll need to think about what type of arrangements are going to work best for your guests. Trestle seating looks great, but isn’t always practical when you’ve got a tight space to move in and out of. Lighting is a big consideration too, and really helps in creating the right mood for your event with options from feature lighting with floral displays, to the ever-popular festoons.

Better Together However you wish to spell it – ‘tipi’ or ‘teepee’ – you’re not wrong! TopKåta is a family owned and operated New Zealand company specialising in authentic Scandinavian 100-year-old Nordic pine, environmentally friendly tipis. They pride themselves on being the only authentic Nordic Pine tipi company in the North Island, and the original and largest in New Zealand! The exclusive range of tipis provide an elite alternative to the 'marquee' structure and each tipi seats up to 70 guests comfortably, with a collection of 14 tipis joined to host over 1,000 people! “No event is 'one size fits all',” they tell us. “We want your special occasion to be memorable and will help create just that.” Their tipi layouts can be adapted to compliment your setting, maximising the views, giving you the freedom to design your own layout, floor-plan and positioning of entrances. “The beautiful thing about our tipis, is we go where you tell us to!"

Of course an important factor when planning an outdoor event is the weather, so it is vital that you know the true capabilities of the tent (or tipi) you rent! Combining modern and traditional techniques and materials, TopKåta tipis can withstand anything the New Zealand weather can throw at them, while keeping guests dry and warm inside. “We’re seeing a shift to an organic, natural approach when it comes to weddings, festivals and conferences, reflecting a personal relaxed style,” they say. TopKåta tipis can be decorated to showcase your interests and personality, including our range of Scandinavian style tables, bench seats, specialty lighting, fire pit, dance floor and matting! Why not make a weekend of it! If you’re hiring our tipis, and the venue allows (or you’re on private land), why not have a brunch the next day? This is a great way to spend more time

Young and in Love Words Maddie Long

Childhood friends Aron Hamilton and Tash Jonas met at Mahurangi College, aged just 15 and 14 respectively. “We had mutual friends and briefly dated,” Tash tells us. “Later on our journey of being best friends we realised that we were more than just friends and decided to start dating again. We have now been together for nine years this July.” Aron was born in Warkworth and raised on his family farm, on Hamilton Road, Snells Beach, and Tash was born in Takapuna and raised in Snells Beach also. Doorstep Dream Destination Does your wedding wish list include a tropically inspired day on a palm covered island? Last year the reality of doing just this was quite possible, but fast forward to 2020 and the thought of heading off to a tropical island with a group of friends and family, and marrying the partner of your dreams, has become just that much more of a challenge in these days of border restrictions. But here is the upside! You can have all that and more without the need to queue at airports and sit on a plane for eight hours, because there is now a private space nearby in Point Wells, north of Auckland, that caters to the laid back vibe of a tropically inspired day. Set amongst towering palms, wander through an understory of lush foliage, to arrive where friends and family have gathered to join you in the purpose built Balinese Gazebo, and celebrate the union of your love and commitment. On most days the Kereru fly through the palms and the many Piwakawaka come to witness the events, a truly inspired blessing from our native fauna. This Balinese inspired garden along with lush plants and statuary surprises comes complete with whitewashed bench seating for up to 100 guests, and when the days celebrations are at an end, return to luxuriate in a private retreat built for two in that very same garden. Contact Robyn at Bali Garden for further information or discuss your ideas. robyn@baligarden.nz

b a l i g a rd e n Stables Accommodation & Wedding Ceremony Venue We invite you to share your special time at our place in a dedicated Balinese inspired garden just minutes from Matakana. Arrive under the towering palms of Bali Garden within a perfect green and tropical space and walk the aisle to a beautiful Bale for your wedding ceremony venue. Together with our gorgeous renovated stable accommodation this makes it a perfect destination to ‘tie the knot’ and then return later in the evening to enjoy this private couples sanctuary. We are proud of our location which boasts an onsite yoga studio within a separate oasis garden – a great way for the bride and groom to start the day in a relaxed state, or maybe just the bridal party? We are currently taking bookings between February through to April 2021.

The Fortunate Ones Fields Fortune is a small flower farm owned and operated by Alice Mitchell. On a quarter acre in Kaipara Flats, Alice specialises in growing an abundance of seasonal, field grown flowers using sustainable and environmentally friendly growing practices. Come rain or sun, Alice can be found out on her farm. Weeding, planting, harvesting, tending delicate crops, and making compost are all in a day's work out on the farm. Although the bulk of the hard farm labour is done by Alice, she is lucky to be supported by her family who aren’t afraid of the grubby side of growing flowers and often get their hands dirty alongside her on busy days! Being a flower farmer wasn’t exactly the career path Alice always had in mind for herself. It took several years of dabbling in rolls in the coffee roasting industry, living in London and working at Auckland Museum

before her love of nature and the need to work outside truly took hold. Although Flower Farming is much harder work than the dreamy photos on Instagram would have you believe, she feels so lucky to be able run her own small business and spend her working hours connected to nature and the power of the soil beneath her feet.

a member of Floral Collective Aotearoa, a group of passionate flower growers who work together to bring an abundance of fresh, seasonal, spray free blooms to florists.

When it comes to creating with her blooms, Alice likes to let nature take the lead. With several years experience of working in an inner city florist shop behind her, mixed bunches from Fields Fortune are made with care and are created organically and intuitively letting each unique bloom speak for itself. Alice loves colour and texture and is drawn to anything with scent.

From Spring, Alice will be back at Grey Lynn Farmers’ Market selling her mixed bunches of flowers on Sunday mornings. Her flowers can often be found in Warkworth Library on a pop up stall and there are big plans for a flower stand to be built at the farm entrance to keep locals in a fresh supply of blooms all summer. Alice is always open to help with more specific orders and flowers for special occasions such as weddings and events. Follow her on Instagram @fieldsfortuneflowers for updates and message enquiries directly or via phone or email.

Savouring the Day Event planners, whether working on weddings, corporate days or family gatherings will look at budget, preferred locations and numbers but sometimes the best way to achieve a gorgeous day is to look outside the box when it comes to the food.

The grazing table for hungry guests is still a popular trend, with an increased interest in plant based plates, less extravagance and more taste. The rise of the sharing table all over the world has given cooks and non cooks alike the freedom to let their creativity flow. Megan and Mandy, proud owners of Sisters’ Kitchen, are looking at food as a metaphor - a means of reflecting this time: clean, handmade and tasty with the focus on enjoying each other and the experience of sharing a feast together. Megan opened her eponymous café ‘Megan’s’ in 2001 in London on Kings Road, which she proudly says remains a huge success even after her exit. Her other passion is event catering on a large scale. She has been providing delicious food for hugely busy public events, feeding visitors to London’s ever popular Art and Antique Fairs

for 12 years. She admits that living in New Zealand now, life is a little slower in pace but no less interesting, “Especially as our food scene is absolutely the best in the world.” Mandy is a practicing visual artist, and a passionate art educator who loves cooking from her organic veggie garden and feeding people!

platters, boards and flowers, not just cheese plates! They take the grazing table into a gorgeous array of delicious main coursesIndian Banquets, Middle Eastern, Italian whatever you want, sourcing ingredients from local Mangawhai or Auckland producers, and of course from Mandy’s enormous veg garden or local farms.

These two women enjoy what they do best and together they love to laugh out loud in the kitchen. They are now concentrating on smaller events, creating the relaxed ambience of casual dining with the addition of the X factor. Planning and preparing extravagant tables for gatherings from Mangawhai to Auckland and taking delight in their craft - they even have their own fabulous intimate venues for small private occasions.

“The ‘garden-to-table’ movement has made it okay for vegetables and protein to share the centre of the table. No longer do we have to work around ‘a meat’, although a fabulous organic Chicken Marbella is still a fave,” the ladies tell us. “We love watching all our guests, especially more men than ever before, mopping up their plates of creamy dips with our own seeded crackers and our huge platters of fresh colour, made with whatever is in season.”

Writing Your Wedding Vows In amongst all the excitement of planning a wedding, choosing a dress, booking a florist and finding the perfect photographer, writing wedding vows for the ceremony sometimes gets postponed until very close to the wedding date.

It’s a daunting prospect for some and an exciting opportunity for others. Making public vows to your intended in front of a (sometimes) large group of people takes some preparation. If you follow a few guidelines and you’re prepared on the day, everything will be fine. Anne Holman, who has been a Celebrant for over 10 years, advises her clients on their options when she meets with them. “Most people tend to write their own vows. Some cherry pick phrases from my samples to make their own unique vows, and some start from scratch with their own story. There are two ways to prepare them. Firstly, you can discuss and share your thoughts with each other so there are no surprises. Secondly (and most popular) you can write your own vows and keep them secret until the day. In this case, I will print them out for the couple to read to each other on the day. This brings

a lovely element of surprise to the ceremony and something to look forward to.” In terms of what to write, in the opening line, all couples are legally required to take each other as lawful husband/wife using their full names. Thereafter you may write whatever you wish. How you feel about each other, what you love about each other and what you promise in the future. The words should be genuine and heartfelt as this is the most important part of the ceremony. There are opportunities for light hearted stories earlier in the ceremony, when Anne likes to read out a story about the couple. Here is an average length example: I, John Smith, take you Mary (or Michael) Jones to be my lawful wife/husband. Mary/Michael, you are my best friend. Today I give myself to you in marriage. I promise to encourage and inspire you, to

laugh with you, and to comfort you. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, when life seems easy and when it seems hard. Together we are better than we could ever hope to be alone, we are a team, and today I give you my love and my trust forever. As my wife/husband, you will always be the best part of my day. After the vows, there is an exchange of rings and then the couple are pronounced married and kiss. Anne always prints off a copy of the ceremony, including the secret vows, to be given to the couple afterwards. This way, they can read and enjoy their vows again in private, after the blur of the excitement of the day. www.rsvpevents.co.nz anne@rsvpevents.co.nz

ART

Graphic Recording is being used more and more in New Zealand because visuals make messages stick. “Picture this", describes Linda, “you’re presenting to a group at a meeting, workshop or conference. I’m there with my iPad drawing the key messages and pictures about what you say. The information I capture is beamed up onto a wall or screen for everyone to see. I listen deeply, think hard and draw fast. After the event I turn those drawings into finished pieces that can be shared as collateral and feedback. Depending on what the client needs, they can become booklets, posters or brochures.” Linda set up her business ‘Drawn Together’ in 2014. In that time she has produced graphic recordings for central government, local government, corporate and community groups. She can turn the most dull corporate documents into visual feasts. In 2016 Linda won the ‘Sole Trader Westpac Small Business Award’ for Porirua. Coming from an artistic family, Linda has always loved art and painted since she was very young. In 2018 she completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology and regularly exhibits across New Zealand. Her work is mainly abstract and explores ideas about the environment, edges (literal and metaphorical) and equity, through her use of acrylic paint and digital media. Last year she was a finalist in the ‘Molly Morpeth Canaday Painting Award’ and the ‘Walker and Hall Art Awards’. Linda is now offering to turn people’s annual and longer term goals and dreams into graphic recordings. “Having a graphic recording of your goals on the wall is a powerful motivation tool,” says Linda. www.drawntogether.net www.lindagilbert.co.nz

Girl Power ‘The shaming culture we live in makes it harder than ever to show courage, be vulnerable, and live wholehearted lives where we are truly able to show up as ourselves.’ – Brene Brown

Human beings are very obviously hardwired for connection and belonging. One of the quickest ways to muddle this beautiful design and enable dysfunction is through the introduction of shame. Guilt and shame are different. Guilt focuses on a person having done something wrong, while shame focuses on there being something fundamentally wrong with a person. The painful blend of emotions that accompany shame come from the false belief of being intrinsically flawed, wrong, bad, undeserving or not good enough. The result is a decrease in self- esteem, which can lead to a range of unhealthy behaviours that only serve to contribute to the shame cycle. Shame has also been perpetuated throughout culture as a way of controlling behaviour by giving children a negative image about

themselves rather than about the impact of their behaviour. This approach again leads to a weakened sense of self-belief or ability to make healthy and empowered choices that are aligned with the child’s unique needs, identity and purpose. The good news is that what a child (or adult) believes about themselves can change. Confidence, emotional intelligence and a more empowered decision making process that overrides the shame narrative can be attained through the introduction of new information and ideas within the context of a safe and supportive space. When it comes to girls, comparison and competition can so undermine the beauty and power of sisterhood. Girls who learn to champion, cheerlead and inspire one another are girls who create more fearlessly, laugh more easily and have that much more impact with the

choices they make and the things they put their hearts into. ‘Shine Girls’ is a solutions focused, personal development program for girls aged 1117. Every aspect of the course is designed to highlight the girls’ worth and value and to shed some light onto any shame-based narrative they might be holding onto. There are three foundational concepts which will be explored over a nine week period: ‘Worth’, ‘Strength’ and ‘Purpose’. Sessions are 90 minutes long and will be held in Snells Beach on a Thursday afternoon, starting 30 July. Drinks and snacks will be provided, as well as take away gifts which relate to the week's concept. For more information email Greer or Jasmine. greerbellmusic@gmail.com jazz.jeb@gmail.com

Ready to fly? Coaching women to achieve their best in business and life – and have fun doing it – is what gets Michelle Clarke out of bed at 5am each day. Her passion is to find out what’s holding you back, then empower you to structure a business that’s bold, authentic and successful. Sheryl is a nutritionist whose business, Why Weight Nutrition, was ticking over for ten years while she raised two kids. But early in 2020, feeling a tickle of ambition, she impulsively signed up for a consultation with Michelle. “She asked me what my plan was – I didn’t have one!” says Sheryl. “But it was the first time I’d invested in myself and it felt wonderful. Michelle began with me: my time management, self-discipline and boundaries. That created space to think about my business – which then stopped over lockdown! But Michelle kept me calm and focused and pushed me to think big.” Sheryl laughs. “I had ideas I’d never have dreamed of and Michelle had all the resources, systems and strategies for me to make them happen. It’s cheesy but true: my life has changed. I now have three fantastic online weight-loss programmes and my investment is paying for itself.” Post-Covid special! Sign up for three months coaching by 30 September 2020, get one bonus month free. www.michellebusinesscoach.com

A Book’s Cover As a child, reading with a ruler was the only way local designer, Cheyney McDonnell, could keep her eyes in place when looking at a book.

Diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome - which is a perceptual processing disorder - her eyes jumped around the page (they still do) and it made reading difficult. But she wasn’t allowed a ruler at school, so would always choose the interactive books to get around having to read. Cheyney has created her first children’s book, ‘Thank you for feeding Freckle’, with a younger version of herself in mind. “Reading is important but it isn't always enjoyable for children for various reasons. I wanted to create a book with lots of visuals and activities to keep young readers engaged and included. 'Thank you for feeding Freckle' is filled with bright, simple images, questions, and fun peek-a-boo flaps,” she tells us.

‘Thank you for feeding Freckle’ is a picture book for parents to read to children between two and six years old. The story walks the reader through feeding and caring for Freckle the cat while Freckle's owners are away. The book introduces children to responsibility and care for animals while encouraging simple decision making. It is a bridge between a story book and a tablet. It isn’t digital, but it invites children to interact/ engage with the pages.

have it finally in the hands of little ones here

Getting the book to print wasn’t an easy process and after exhausting all of her options in New Zealand, Cheyney sent it offshore to Australia, where publishing house ‘Five Mile’ picked it up. She is so thrilled to

to businesses around New Zealand and the

in New Zealand and across the Tasman.

Presales took off during lockdown, with first copies of the books landing in the country

mid-June 2020. And the reviews have been outstanding. Nationwide retailer Whitcoulls

has now confirmed they will be stocking the book in their stores/online in August.
