Why do athletes travel from all over the North Island to a small boxing gym in Wellsford? To train with its legendary founder, Wellsford Boxing head coach Fili Maka.
daughter Magan wanted to try boxing, he started coaching her from the wheelchair, and found his calling. Soon he started training more family members.
Fili has several awards to his name and is currently coaching three New Zealand champions. But the road to get there has not been easy.
“My nephew came from the Islands and stayed with me in Auckland. He started getting into street gangs and got into trouble, so I decided to take him to the gym, and boxing changed his life. He became really successful, got out of trouble and ended up representing New Zealand. It was an amazing turnaround,” Fili says.
Fili came to Auckland from Tonga on a scholarship as a teenager, playing rugby and boxing on the side. But in 1996 Fili’s life was changed forever by a freak accident. While working as a mechanic, a car fell on top of him, putting him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. “It was really tough. I had a young family, my oldest was only five when it happened,” he says. Instead of giving up, Fili got on with his life, living it the best he could. When his eleven-year-old

paddle boarding, kayaking and other water activities. But Fili and his family were not that familiar with the area before they moved up. “I didn't know anyone – I had just decided I wanted to be one hour out of Auckland! In my experience however, Tomarata is a great place to bring up family, especially young kids,” Fili says. Once the family was settled in, Fili opened Wellsford Boxing Gym and Fitness, which is now based in the old A&P Building.
Eventually, Fili and his family left Auckland behind for Tomarata, a small township north-east of Wellsford, between Pakiri and Te Arai.
“The building had not been used for many years, but my wife Myra and I have done our best to update it, put in new carpet and make it suitable for boxing. We worked hard to make it happen.
The area is known for Tomarata Lake, one of three sand dune lakes that are beautifully set between hills and forestry and are popular for swimming,
“There's never been a boxing gym in Wellsford before and we’ve been told it's one of the best things that happened to the community,” Fili says.

As for his daughter Magan Maka, she is now one of the most successful boxers in the history of New Zealand: five times New Zealand champion, multiple Golden Gloves winner and on the Commonwealth and Olympic teams. “She was one of the two female fighters who made history by representing New Zealand at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This was the first time that women’s boxing was allowed to feature in the Games,” Fili says, beaming with pride. Magan has represented New Zealand all over the world. At the recent Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast Fili was coaching Tonga, so Magan decided to join her father and also represented Tonga. Not only did Magan make it on the team, she was
given the great honour of being their flag-bearer, leading the Tongan athletes into the stadium for the opening ceremony.
their body and in their life. That’s what keeps me going. “Without the help and support of my wife and family I wouldn't be able to pursue my passion for boxing,” Fili says.
“It was probably one of the proudest moments of my life, receiving that call from Tonga Olympic Committee," says Fili. You don't often see a boxing-coach in a wheelchair, but Fili believes everything happens for a reason. “It can be hard, to be honest. But who knows what would have happened in my life if I hadn't end up in a wheelchair - would I still be changing other people's lives? “Seeing the difference I make is a blessing. MANGAWHAI’S NEW WAKA AMA FAMILY WORDS
Mangawhai Waka Ama is Northland’s newest outrigger canoe club and one that’s growing fast because of its supportive, inclusive vibe. “It’s a lovely group of people – we’ve become like a whānau,” says Jackie Fanning, one of the founding members. “We get a real cross-section of the community and it’s a neat way to meet different people.” The club was founded in 2016, but has only been active for the past year. “It took us a while to find a boat. The ones we have now are all borrowed,” says Jackie. “We have three six-person boats: two from the Pahi Club near Paparoa and one from Tai Tokerau Polynesian Canoe Association. We were lucky enough to get a grant from lotteries, that enabled us to get organised and upgrade important safety gear. Our

three hours to finish.
Jackie says they now have more than 20 regular members and a few others that drop in and out.
“It’s a long way, especially if you’re close to another boat, then it can turn into an epic battle. In the last competition, at the halfway point we were the last boat around, but then we just started passing all the other boats and ended up coming second in our division. The last 3km we were tied with another boat and we had to fight and dig really deep.
“Lots of people just do it for the social side of things, you don’t have to enter the competitions. You don’t have to be fit or competitive to do Waka Ama, it’s for everyone. We really encourage the social side of our club. It’s fun to go away to events, or just all meet down on the water to go out on little missions together.” When they do compete, Jackie says they focus on the long-distance races, which can take more than

“We’ve just completed a race around Takapuna that was 24km and we did an 18km race the other day. There are long-distance nationals coming up in Napier and I think we’ll put in a team for that. They will have races that are around 30km.
“You get such a sense of satisfaction when everyone is working together well. If everyone is out of sync you’re not flowing well. It’s not just a

matter of throwing some strong paddlers in the boat, you all have to work as one.” The club is currently based in Sellars Reserve, but the Kaipara District Council is helping to find a new location. Jackie says they have plans to expand further and encourages people to check out the Facebook page (see link below). “The next step is getting some adjustable paddles, so we can grow the youth side of our club. That’s our mission this year, to get the high school kids involved. “We also want to get a four-man waka and some
singles and doubles too. It’s a good way for people to learn how to paddle because they can feel what their stroke does, compared to the bigger boats. Hopefully next year we can host our own event, maybe race to Sail Rock and back – it’s around 28km.”
get to be out on the water, get to go on missions in nature, get fit, and get to meet new people. Heaps of fun!”
Jackie’s love of the sport is inspiring. “It’s a really fun sport, and it’s so inclusive as well. You see people from all ages competing, from kids to people in their 70s,” she says. “One thing I like about Waka Ama is that it ticks a lot of boxes; you

Dedicated Year 9 Boarding Lodge at King’s College now in its third year
Year 9 Boarding at King’s College offers a unique boarding experience for young boys entering into independent secondary schooling away from home. Te Pūtake Lodge which was established in 2016 offers a flagship boarding programme to assist boys as they transition into a productive boarding life. House Master Paul Watts who previously founded and managed Greenbank House for 21 years says “Te Pūtake provides a strong foundational year for King’s boys and equips them with the skills sets and experiences to enable them to thrive in a dynamic boarding environment with a challenging academic, sporting and cultural programme.” Each boy is aligned with their future boarding house but the Lodge unites them as one ‘family’ with a shared experience with other boys their age who are living away from their families. “We create a sense of belonging to the Lodge, their House and ultimately the wider King’s community. We look to develop key aspects of our student lives in terms of building on strong values and respect for one other. Every student is part of the same shared experience.” Mr Watts says their programmes focus on team building and cooperation which creates camaraderie and connection which is becoming more valuable in an ever changing and often isolating world for many young teenagers. “We focus on getting the boys into good study habits, recording prep and revision each night which are checked by the tutor.” Since its inception Lodge students have quickly moved into top placings in year 9 academic class ranks.
Two Year 12 boarders are rostered on to stay at the Lodge each week and one Year 12 Boarder each weekend. “This provides our senior students with a leadership opportunity and the opportunity for the boys to form friendships with senior students who will be in Year 13 the following year when they are Year 10s.” Mr Watts says that more and more parents are being challenged by the impact of gaming addiction or overuse of screen time is having on their young sons. “At the Lodge all electronic devices are collected and removed each night and only returned to student the next morning. This means that the boys have the ability to have 8-9 hours of good solid uninterrupted sleep – so vital to growing young teenage lads.”
King’s College is gauging interest from families in your area in a weekend return bus service to the College. To register your interest and arrange a personal tour to find out more about boarding life please contact King’s College Head of Admissions Graeme Syms g.syms@kingscollege.school.nz Benefits of boarding life at Te Pūtake Lodge
• Support to transition to secondary school away from home • Friendships formed with boys from outside of Auckland and other countries
Mr Watts says the lock up system for devices can easily be managed by staff and removes the conflict which often eventuates between parent and child in the home environment.
• Three dedicated tutors living on site and a House Manager to support personal needs
“Weekly boarding for students is proving very popular with parents who lead busy professional lives and want their sons to be able to maximise their time at school and in afterschool activities without having to spend hours in Auckland traffic.”
• Shared dining with other boarders
• Teacher/Mentor and support from Scholars Common Room • Personalised fitness programmes • Health and nutritional specialist • Good sleep schedules for growing teenage boys – 9pm to 7am • Lock up systems in place for electronic devices.
A full range of weekend boarding activities is overseen by the Head of Boarding to ensure that all boarders can take advantage of different social activities and connect with other senior boarders. This year an honorary Lodge member was introduced in the form of trainee assisted living dog ‘Ranger’ who lived at the Lodge with the boys and who has since graduated. The boys continue to fundraise towards this chosen charity as part of their community service programme.

SLOW LIFE IN THE FAST LANE WORDS
“There’s something about Port Albert,” says Dave Pratt, meditatively. “It’s…” He looks at the ceiling. Authentic? “Yep,” he agrees. Big, twinkly Dave and his partner Grace own the Port Albert store. It’s famous for its fish and chips. Dave is famous for his shed. Port Albert is eight kilometres off SH16, only about ten minutes from Wellsford. There are rolling hills, historic cottages with red roofs, and sudden, glorious views of the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour. Dave and Grace bought the store four years ago. For many years, it was the lifeblood of the community, stocking everything from bread to tractor parts, but it closed over two decades ago. The couple were living in Puhoi, with Grace working in the store there when it came up for

sale. “We drove in here and just went ‘yeah, this is the place,’” says Dave. He likes the fact that in Port Albert you don’t have to dress up to go out. “We have shearing gangs, local ladies in their gumboots, farmers parking their tractors and plenty of tourists who pop in for coffee.” Grace’s locally-roasted (Rush) flat white would certainly give Ponsonby Road cafés a run for their money. Dave left school at 14 to do a mechanical engineering apprenticeship. He had a solid grounding – “I pretty much grew up in Dad’s shed,” he says nostalgically. He has been involved in Speedway for around 20-25 years, working with mini sprint cars, TQs and now midgets. Exmotocross star Hamish Dobbyn (featured in our January Edition) began driving the Port Albert

Midget car last year and Dave is also mentoring 15-year-old David Pellow, who’s been on the track most of his life. Dave set up the workshop to craft the interior fit-out of the store, but has since acquired the machinery needed to fabricate from scratch most mechanical parts he needs. He also builds motorcycles. His gear is old-school. “I’m a parts man, I use dials, not computers. I can just about manage to send an email,” he says wryly. His extensive signage collection has been mostly sourced via a mate’s scrapyard. Thursday nights is when the boys come around to Dave’s snug bar in the back corner of the shed. It boasts a disco ceiling, TV and a collection of model Nascar vehicles. “Quite a few of the guys here have set up bars. Some are pretty amazing,” he says.

“It’s just something social we like to do since we don’t have a pub.” A quick tiki-tour takes in spectacular harbour views and the wharf, then it’s back to the store to grab some local avocados. Port Albert is an hour and a half from Auckland, but it’s more like timetravelling. And yep – it’s definitely authentic.

THE PUHOI AXEMEN WORDS
Formed in 1962, the Puhoi Axemen Club, which trains primarily at Kaipara Flats, currently boasts 12 active choppers, who compete in events throughout the country from October onwards. For the local axemen, the highlight of the season is undoubtedly the annual Puhoi Pub Woodchopping Carnival, held in January. “It has become very popular and some axemen class it as the best one day chop in New Zealand,” Sanderson says. “It’s the atmosphere, the crowd participation and we have good prize money too, so we can attract some really top class axemen.” For those who want to take up the sport, the

club provides full training which includes trips to competitive events, to give newcomers a taste of the action. Puhoi Axemen compete in a number of categories, including the underhand, in which competitors stand on the wood and chop it through their feet, and the standing event, where a secured block of wood has to be cut through from both sides as quickly as possible. Strangely enough, the underhand event is the one new choppers start out on.
At present, the club has no female members, but has had in the past and Sanderson believes it is a sport that can be enjoyed by both men and women. “My daughter used to compete with me in the sawing events and also did some underhand events. But unfortunately, she has moved to university and can’t do it anymore.”
“It may not seem so to the spectators, but from a technical point of view, it is much safer because there is less chance to cut yourself when you are standing on the block,” Sanderson explains. “When you are standing beside it the axe can hit you on the front leg, so you need more technique and control of the axe to do that.” As far as equipment goes, competitors do need specialist equipment with prices ranging from

It’s been a good year for Fili Maka, founder and head coach at Wellsford Boxing Sports and Fitness. He won two awards at the New Zealand Nationals for Most Scientific Coach for Junior and Youth, and coached Tonga at the Commonwealth Games. Wellsford Boxing has three current New Zealand champions, Tui Vea Elite 60kg, Onyx Lye, Junior 75kg, and Fili’s daughter Magan Maka, Elite 69kg. Originally from Tonga, Fili founded Wellsford Boxing in 2010, which has been greatly appreciated by the community.

The gym also hosts classes for Blue Light, a charity that works in partnership with the police to deliver activities to youth, to encourage better relations between the police, young people, their parents and the community. Assistant coach and police constable Shaz Glen runs the Blue Light classes, and trains the box-fit classes three mornings a week. Fili runs kids boxing classes twice a week for ten to fourteen-year-olds. He says people come for different reasons – mental as well as physical.
“There’s not much happening here all year round, most sports are seasonal. We keep youth out of trouble and keep kids and older people busy too. People from five to seventy-five train with us.”
“I have fighters who want to get in the ring and compete. One of the young boys training with me, Tui Vea, is the most promising fighter in the country. He is current NZ Elite 60kg and Golden Gloves Elite 64kg Champion.”
Fili welcomes everyone from professional boxers to kids, teenagers, and PE-classes from the local colleges.
“But the majority are coming for their fitness. To lose weight, gain self-confidence and learn skills in the ring that translate to their whole life.”

“Some people bring their kids because they are bullied in school. But I don't train people to use their boxing to beat up their bullies, just to help them stand up for themselves.” One of Fili’s favourite things is talking to parents, and it’s easy to understand why. “Many are so happy to find something their kids enjoy doing, seeing how it changes their kids and grows their confidence.”

needles. “It is actually at that level, but when you’re making something like the animals, it’s also a three-dimensional process,” says Gary. While knitting is dominated by women, historically that was not the case. Gary tells me, “any self-respecting Scotsman would collect fleeces and spin them into yarn, then he would sit down, at night, and knit up his socks and garments.” Gary suggests that something like knitting can capture children’s brains and if it is at the right time it keeps them from heading off on tangents that might not be the best. “Saying to young people that it is okay or cool to do things like knitting is really important.”
Gary includes knitting in the important life skills of being able to repair and create. “To my mind, if you get a tear in your jeans, you sew it back up.” Gary prefers to knit small, quirky things like his amazing collection of animals. On the table in front of me sits a beautiful green chameleon. Gary reaches into its mouth and pulls it inside out – it
turns from green to orange! “It does it in the most grotesque way possible so that’s pretty cool. Anything that is a bit bizarre appeals to me,” says Gary laughing. His latest project is a beanie with a brain pattern on it.
For those wanting to learn to knit, start with YouTube and books or enquire at The Knitting Truck about lessons.
Gary got started on novelty knitting when he was at school and stumbled across a crochet pattern for woolly sheep. “It was a way of turning scrap wool into an income and it helped pay for my materials.” Amongst his range of career paths, Gary is a programmer and I suggest to him that knitting is really just executing a program with wool and

MANGAWHAI RAYDERS CYCLE CLUB
Mangawhai Rayders is a grass-roots, mountain bike club with a simple philosophy of bringing the exhilaration of mountain biking to as many as possible in the local area. Their main focus is youth in the coastal community and they run riding with the local Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ), as their base. With their support they are developing the existing trail network within the park and creating a series of pump tracks to cater for all levels.
The groups are separated into under 9s and 9 and over, and they learn basic riding skills and coaching with the emphasis on having fun. As a club they want to share their passion for mountain biking and to be involved in the community by having a positive influence on its people. Parents are encouraged to join in and ride with the kids as riding is something the whole family can do and a great way of spending quality time together. ‘Mountain Bike Mondays’ are fun, off road riding

SHED YOUR INHIBITIONS WORDS
“My principal request of people when they come here, is that they indulge their passions and get back their sense of excitement, through the act of making something,” says Stephen Mackay of The Mangawhai Shed. “The Shed is where I try and earn a living, but I felt I just had to share it – it’s too good to keep to myself.” Every Friday, from 10am, Stephen opens his shed to the community. That’s when it becomes The Mangawhai Shed. Everybody is welcome, old and young, men and women. “It’s about community, sharing our love and passion for making things, and providing support for each other,” says Stephen. His intrinsic understanding of the growth and healing to be found in the simple act of planing a piece of wood, was what got Stephen started, but providing a space to help build resilience and connection in the community was also very important.
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
Stephen is a teacher, who works with schools and kindergartens to provide children with a workshop experience. “I get children out of classrooms and put real tools in their hands. We’ve had a whale of a time building tree houses, pirate ships and pink dinosaurs. It is a joy for me to see people grow and even heal in that process. I’ve had way too much fun.” Stephen declares himself the temporary host of the community shed but, along with an informal group of other enthusiasts, he harbours the ultimate hope that there can be a permanent workspace in central Mangawhai. Visitors to the shed sometimes run small workshops on how to do something they are skilled at, and Stephen loves seeing that culture and history passed on. “Some day, in the right space, I would like to see a calendar of workshops. This shed can comfortably accommodate five or six people, but after that, it’s getting a bit small. There are so many people in this area with amazing skills and it would be great
to have a space where we can share that.” Stephen explains that Fridays can range from fullon beaverish activity and no talking, through to other times when everyone just wants to chat. “So I put on the tea and coffee, and don’t fight it. We sit down and sort out the world’s problems.” There is learning by osmosis and helpful advice from whoever is around on Fridays, so it is not a formal teaching environment. It is the day of the week when Stephen takes off his teacher’s hat and indulges in his own projects, and enjoys the company around him. For Stephen, The Mangawhai Shed experience is also about starting his weekend in the best possible way. “I use to say that my weekend started on Friday afternoon but now it starts on Friday morning,” he laughs. www.facebook.com/mangawhaished www.stephenmackay.co.nz

EMPHASIS ON STRESS WORDS
Stress - we have all experienced it. While it can precipitate positive action, it can be damaging if left unaddressed. It arises generally from a subjective source of mental, physical or emotional aggravation, resulting in increased tension. The negative outcomes vary from mild anxiety to mood disorders, physical unwellness and sadly, self-harm. In my experience, men discuss these issues less readily than women. When they do get around to broaching the subject, the negative outcomes may be quite advanced. Stress is inescapable - accept that one is likely to encounter it. However, with appropriate strategies, support and assistance, most stress can be overcome. This will mitigate against

feeling overwhelmed or catastrophising. Should events prove to be more overwhelming, there are many strategies that may assist in achieving greater resilience. Here are some strategies to address stress. • Attend to work-life imbalance - whatever the issues, health is too high a price to pay. • Exercise - as little as 10 minutes of aerobic exercise per day may begin to have a positive effect (on sleep, sense of well-being, self- image, cardiovascular). • Attend to sleep hygiene - this is a restorative time so aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night. • Explore relaxation options - these may include

mindfulness-based approaches, meditation, yoga or tai chi. • Limit (or stop) harmful substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, high caffeine intake and recreational drugs. These strategies need to become a part of a sustainable lifestyle rather than a remedy from crisis to crisis. Should the above strategies be inadequate, seek additional help from friends and family, ministers/ elders in your faith, counsellors and a range of healthcare providers.

THE DECADE OF CHOICE WORDS
There is so much choice in today’s world. The popular press is awash with advice on what to eat, new theories on health, exercise advice and supplements that improve everything from your strength to your libido. Advertisers bombard us and would have us believe that ‘bad health choices’ can be rectified with a quick fix, while fast food stores are everywhere. However, we are in charge of our bodies and we need to be realistic about how we eat, exercise, live our lives and look after our mental health. Many men who were fit and active when young, gradually slip into poor lifestyle choices, gain weight and experience mood fluctuations as they reach their thirties and forties. The pressures of
SIMON
BARCLAY
family, money and work take their toll and the motivation to change gets less. The excuses for why they can’t or shouldn’t change become more plentiful. Men are not good at being emotionally honest with each other and are often reluctant to seek medical advice. Anxiety, low mood and depression are expressed as non-communication with, and anger towards, those closest to them. When you get to 40, you have arrived at the start of the decade of choice. It’s pretty simple. If you don’t sort out your smoking, inactivity, weight, worries, stress and work/life balance over the next 10 years, you’re not likely to make old bones.
honest with them. They will be there for you and you should be there for them and not afraid to open up emotionally. Start seeing your doctor for regular checks – this ‘preventative medicine’ is there to help you change for the better and avoid getting sick. There are no magic bullets; most health choices are a matter of common sense, but there is a lot of advice and support that others can give you to help yourself. At the end of the day, you are the only one who can make the choice to live a healthier life and by doing so, live longer.

It’s coming up to 15 years of being in business for Leigh-based Rochford Landscapes. When asked how he got into landscaping, owner Todd Rochford jokes, “Well, as a kid growing up on a lifestyle farming property in the area, my dad taught me the intricacies of digging a hole.” Truth be told, Rochford Landscapes has a great reputation for approachability, reliance and quality of work - providing landscaping, building and digger services from Puhoi to Pakiri. “There’s no better place to be a father than here,” says Todd, father of two. In fact, the entire Rochford Landscaping crew is made up of family men living locally - Todd, Alex ‘Big Al’ Gimring, Arron ‘Knighty’ Knight (and aspiring apprentice, Blayde). They’ve just finished a neat project at the local pre-school where two of the littlies attend. Asked to describe them in a few words here’s what the wives and children of Rochford Landscape’s menfolk came up with: non-stop, determined, awesome-playground-builder, grumpy, precise, honest and funny-in-a-dad-joke-kind-of-way. GROW IN THE FLOW - YOGA FOR BROS Wendy Douglas started teaching Yoga for Bros, at the beginning of June. She decided to dedicate a class just for men because there were so few males going to her classes. “I love teaching all female classes but I think it’s great to have a good ratio of males to females,” says Wendy. She spoke to a few local men keen to do a male only class and so ‘Yoga for Bros’ was born. “The men attending Yoga for Bros are mostly beginners, so the hope is that once they have had a few sessions, they may have more confidence to venture into the predominantly female classes. Some men feel more comfortable being in a male environment where everyone is on a level playing field.” Yoga has so many benefits and if practiced regularly can target those tight spots; shoulders, hamstrings, quadriceps, glutes and hips. Yoga can also enhance athletic performance, prevent injury and speed recovery, boost your sex life, increase muscle tone, lower stress levels and increase mental agility. The style of yoga Wendy teaches is Ashtanga, a system which involves synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures. The practice of yoga was developed over 5,000 years ago in India and was practiced there predominantly by males. Although the popularity of yoga among women has skyrocketed in the West the last century, men are slowly starting to find their place in modern yoga, either as practice on its own or as a complement to other sports and more traditional forms of exercise. “Ultimately I just want to share my passion for this practice with as many people as possible and if Yoga for Bros, gives men a space to try yoga, hopefully they will enjoy it, attend other classes, incorporate it into their lives, reap the countless benefits and of course have some fun in the process!” $20 casual, loyalty card available. KEEPING AHEAD OF THE GAME “We, as men, naturally push the boundaries and generally maintain a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. However daily activities around the house, worksite, and sports field can present many risks,” says Tamati Kemp, your local registered insurance advisor for NZ 1st Financial Services. He implements protection for individuals, families and businesses, “having private medical insurance, protection on your income, or lump sum payout products for traumatic events, can help offset our (at times) careless nature.” Tamati also helps the self-employed, restructure their ACC to ensure an agreed level of cover and annual levies. “We hardly bat an eyelid when insuring the house, car, boat, or the tools – so why wouldn’t we prioritise insuring our greatest asset, being the ability to work and earn an income? On the other hand, no matter how diligent we are, we cannot completely avoid the bumps along the road – however, with a financial safety net in place, this can allow us to smooth them out,” says Tamati. Being a member of the Rodney Rams Cricket team, and having played sports his whole life, Tamati is no stranger to injuries and understands the lengthy process within the public health system. “We’re very lucky to have a level of free care in our country, but with your own medical insurance you have the ability to fast track operations,
choose your surgeons, and have access to nonpharmac funded medication. This in turn helps speed up your recovery both mentally and physically.” Contact Tamati now for a friendly, free no-obligation assessment.

RUGBY, RACING AND ROSÉ WORDS
JAMES
GRAHAM
It's not that long since rugby, racing, and beer were considered the defining interests of the ‘kiwi man’. While there's still a lot of all three available, their grip on the national psyche has diminished as we have become culturally broader and more diverse. In the same way our expectations of what we can, and want, to eat and drink have grown enormously. Exposure from travelling to, and immigration from, all parts of the world has massively impacted on what we consume. The growth of the wine industry in New Zealand is almost without precedent; from a very small base, to a global presence in 30 years. That growth has been not only in volume, but quality, diversity, and consumer knowledge. White for the ladies, red for the men, is now far too simplistic, and kiwi's are open to exploring and enjoying wine in a way that just wasn't possible a couple of decades ago. The mix of varieties and styles produced in New Zealand is large, and getting larger. Small regions, like Matakana, are at the forefront of exploring new varieties and wine styles and provide a great opportunity to discover something new. Grape varieties like Albarino, Gruner Vertliner, Montepulciano and Sangiovese once almost unheard of, are now increasingly part of the variety of our wine drinking. Likewise one of the unexpected outcomes of this has been the massive growth in men drinking rosé, the ‘Brosé’ phenomenon. Pink wines are in demand for their refreshing quality and versatility, and as much rosé is now consumed worldwide, by men as by women. Kiwi men (and women) are increasingly drinking what they actually like to drink, not what they think they're expected to like. Wine has no gender, so explore the options and drink the wines you enjoy. www.matakanawine.co.nz

AMARANTO PASTA AND CUCINA AUTHENTIC ITALIAN IN NEW WAYS
WORDS REBECKA
Pasta-lovers on the Matakana Coast will be pleased to know there’s a new Italian eatery in town! But it’s not a traditional Italian restaurant – it’s a refitted 1966 caravan found at selected spots around the region. Luisa Pollio and Tommaso Baldassarri started Amaranto only three weeks ago, selling both ready-to-eat takeaway meals and fresh handmade pasta, for customers to cook themselves. They began at the Matakana Village Farmers Market and were overwhelmed with the response. “We sold out completely before midday,” Luisa says. “We love selling there. It's a great vibe. Early in the morning you get the locals, and later come the Aucklanders who are really interested in the products and love meeting the producers.” They have chosen to keep their pasta completely gluten-free.

“We have worked for years perfecting the recipe, with a mix of seven alternative flours. We are using mostly organic, seasonal ingredients to bring out the best flavours. It’s not the traditional way, but our flavours are authentic, and we have Italian customers who love our pasta,” Luisa says.
“Kitchen equipment is heavy, so you have to be mindful of where you put everything. A balance between a good workflow in the kitchen and still being able to tow it safely!”
The ready-to-eat pasta changes weekly, with menus and locations posted on Amaranto’s Facebook page.
“We were working too much in Italy, always feeling stressed and not having enough time together. Tommy was working with a chef who had a cousin in New Zealand and told him about this country, so we decided to be crazy and just go over. We didn’t think it over, we just did it!” Luisa says.
“My favourite is beef ravioli, served with tomato sauce, or with butter, lemon and sage. Tommy's favourite is Strozzapreti with creamy ragù. Both are served frequently from the caravan and at the market,” Luisa says. She says the biggest challenge was setting up the caravan – it wasn’t easy to fit an entire commercial kitchen inside.
The couple have come a long way since they left Italy six years ago, moving to Auckland on a whim.

Together, under Amber’s guidance, you'll prepare your lunch, cook it over a fire and dine under the trees, out in the fresh air. "The emphasis is on the experience and allowing time to connect,” says Kate. “There's something so satisfying and 'real' about gathering around a fire and cooking together - letting go of perfection and leaving the result to circumstance." Don't come expecting manicured lawns and trimmed hedgerows, here they embrace nature and let it take its course. If it is wild and overgrown, there is a reason for it, for in amongst it all you might find your lunch! “I like that it's a little out of some people’s comfort zone, allowing them to open
themselves to a new experience and go away feeling that they've done something different, in a world that sometimes seems so routine and rigorous,” she says. Workshops are available upon request, when you book to stay at Totem Retreat and there will be quarter-annual, seasonal foraged lunches focusing on seasonal ingredients. Other than that groups and teams of people can book mid-week (Tues/Thurs) for an experience. “We're hoping corporate groups might also be attracted to the lunches as part of a team building experience and put the house to use for small meetings at the same time or even stay over... get some work done, connect with the team and have a unique experience all in one go.”
Amber Rose’s latest book 'Wild Delicious' is set to be released in September 2018. You can follow them in Instagram at totemretreatnz, wild_delicious, and kate. arbuthnot.stylist For more on their adventures and details on their next foraged lunch. www.totem.retreat.co.nz totem.retreat@gmail.co.nz

THE NEXT GENERATION OF BAKER
‘Sinead’s Cakes’, curated by local teenager Sinead Spurr, was launched earlier this year. She’s always been a bit of a foodie, with her mum telling her stories of when she was younger, how she was fascinated with all kinds of weird and wonderful foods. Baking became a hobby of Sinead’s and when she was about eight she began to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, creating all kinds of cupcakes and losing herself in the process. At the age of 12 she became a vegan, so commencing a journey surrounding health. Sinead still wished to bake delicious treats for herself and her family while eliminating foods containing gluten and dairy and so she began experimenting with all kinds of ingredients, some of which she’d never before even heard of. “Baking acts as something of a therapy for me, when I’m feeling overwhelmed or stressed,

I’ll turn to the kitchen and bake a cake.” In 2016 she began to share her passion on her Instagram account, documenting and displaying her creations. Sinead looks to others for inspiration and one of these sources is Jordan Rondell from The Caker: “She is an amazing baker, making the most beautiful cakes on K Road,” says Sinead. Other entrepreneurs within the vegan community, such as Midnight Baker and Real Rad Food, also inspire her as a new up-andcoming caker. “Claudia Munro, who started the school magazine for Mahurangi College, gave me the opportunity to share my baking on a wider spectrum and Bernadette Hogg mentored me in food photography, when I was just starting out,” she says.
For now Sinead is working from home, alongside completing level 2 NCEA, however, she’s still devotes time to her baking and makes room in her busy schedule to pursue her passion and grow her business. “Every other day I test a new cake flavour and new ingredients. It is a bit trial and error at the moment!“ she says. Sinead has recently started marketing her cakes within the local community, with plans to sell her cakes at markets, general events and for special occasions. You can find Sinead on Facebook and Instagram, where you can also enquire about cake orders!

MARK
LEWINGTON
Mark Lewington is a mercurial chap, when it comes to the arts. He flits from the functional to the abstract, recycled sculpture to screen printing and stenciling, graphic sign writing to clothing design. He’s also a drummer, a DJ who loves his vinyl and a mad collector of vintage skateboards, trikes, bikes and the likes. You can’t get away from lists with Mark, but whatever he’s up to, he’s doing it with originality and his trademark, wicked humour. His partner, Tabea, and their two small children are away visiting family in Germany when we visit and his whopping new shed is open to the chilly sunshine. His collected and created treasures emerge from storage, adorn walls and shelves to inspire him afresh. Mark’s a local boy who went to Mahurangi College. When did he realise he was arty? “Not at school,” he says. “I was pretty good at maths and science, and I just assumed I’d become an electrical engineer like my dad.” He duly embarked on a New Zealand Certificate of Engineering; he excelled and was awarded a $2K scholarship for further study. “Yeah… turned out engineering wasn’t my thing,” he admits. “I spent the money on snowboarding”. He dropped out and worked at Signmasters, in

Warkworth, where he’d done part-time holiday work. A couple of years of work versus snowboarding followed (with the snow usually winning) until he went to a signwriters expo and wound up with a job in a plastic fabrication company, learning the ropes as a signwriter and CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine operator. “These were great skills to acquire,” Mark says. “They opened the door to all the amazing possibilities of using industrial materials with technology, and shaped much of what I do now.” A few years later in 2003, Mark began his own business, Only Concepts, in Matakana. He has a large, local, client base for his branding and signage, including the Sawmill Brewery, the Vivian Gallery and Skywork Helicopters and his screenprinted designs are legendary (his latest t-shirt print blends a seagull and pony to create a ‘seahorse’). His art, often featuring chickens (he’s very fond of them), has been stenciled onto recycled ironing boards, steel shelving and fridges. Concrete toilet roll holders, router-cut shelving or chopping boards inset with vintage toys in acrylic windows, are a few of his many ideas for functional art. He’s now back to an old favourite. “I’ve been collecting portraits for years. I live with them for a while, waiting for their alter egos to reveal themselves, then paint in a mask, helmet, balaclava or headpiece that’ll work for them.” For Mark, this series is about getting back to anonymity in a world of facial recognition. “These works have spent decades in the public eye... masking them gives them back their mystery, their freedom. It also makes my audience smile, which is definitely one of my main goals.” We can’t wait to see what this innovative creative comes up with next. Mark grins, “I’m always thinking.”

Williams earlier in the year with a stripped-back solo set, but now she’ll be headlining with her own band for the first time in seven years. On top of the great music, the We Light Fire tour offers more opportunities for women in the NZ music industry. Julia’s band and touring crew are predominantly women, as well as her booking agent, promoter and publicist. Many of the support artists will be local, female (or femaleidentifying) musicians. “Throughout my career I have strived to be recognised as a musician first, but often my being a woman has meant I’ve been looked upon as some kind of novelty,” says Julia. “To me, gender should not be an issue.” This tour will likely prove her right – don’t miss it! Since her days as front woman for Fur Patrol, Julia Deans has grown from a young, rock icon to a nuanced, storytelling chanteuse. Her first solo album Modern Fables was a critical success, and her new album We Light Fire is the long-awaited follow up. Julia’s reverb-soaked vocals dominate the raw, opening track, Clandestine. The other singles Walking In The Sun and The Panic are more rock and roll, with grooving bass lines and wandering keys.
“We Light Fire is about being human, and the things that we have in common – the desires and emotions that connect us, even when we think we’re divided or different or alone,” says Julia. “I like to think there’s a sense of hope and optimism in there too, the idea that there’s a better world, a better way out there for us if we could stop being so blind.” You can catch the news songs, plus a few of her old hits, when Julia plays at the legendary Leigh Sawmill Café on 4 August. KAIPARA ART AWARD SHOW AT MANGAWHAI ARTISTS GALLERY A large collection of amazing and thought-provoking art is on display at Mangawhai Artists Gallery from 10 August. The stunning collection of 57 works has been praised for diversity, skill and beauty. Many of the artists have reflected on where they live and taken Kaipara to the heart of their entries for the 2018 Kaipara Art Awards. Mary-Anne Boyd, chair of Mangawhai Artists said, “Outstanding and fantastic artistic contributions – a marvellous showcase for local art.” Annual Kaipara Art Awards are hosted by Mangawhai Artists Inc. and Dargaville Art Association with the prize giving ceremony alternating each year. Judge Richard Cranenburgh awarded the prizes at the Dargaville opening last month. Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir St, Mangawhai www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz
