SPOTLIGHT
STRAWBERRY FIELDS
Strawberries are absolutely the perfect way to start a summer day or finish one! Fresh Food Exports have been growing in Omaha Flats since 1991 when they grew persimmons, melons, blueberries and strawberries. The operation’s main focus has since moved to strawberries and blueberries. “We’re extremely proud of our strawberry operation and equally proud of our reputation as a premium berry growing company with a name for quality, delicious products grown with care and picked with pride. Our berries are hand-picked and packed every day so you can get the freshest produce possible,” say the team from Gala Berry. In 2016 the growing operation in Omaha was bought by the Ashby family who started the Gala Berry brand in Coatesville/Albany. As a family the Ashby’s are fully committed to the success and growth of Gala Berry and have over 38 years of experience and an absolute passion for producing quality fruit for New Zealanders. The Omaha Flats region was identified in the

1960s as having premium soils capable of growing a wide range of crops. The region also has the advantage of harvesting earlier than the traditional strawberry growing areas in Auckland, because of its high sunshine hours and higher average temperatures. Gala Berry is part of Fresh Food Exports and is one of the largest strawberry producers in New Zealand, and the biggest commercial grower in the Omaha Flats area. The team at Gala Berry work tirelessly all year round to bring you the very best strawberries. They work with nature to grow delicious fruit in a natural environment, with a minimum amount of horticultural intervention and using their many years of experience to achieve these sun-ripened berries just bursting with flavour! The mouth-watering, juicy sweetness and deep red colour of strawberries can brighten up any meal. But not only do they taste amazing, strawberries are among the fruits and vegetables ranked highest for health-promoting antioxidants... a genuine, bona-fide superfood!
“We begin the process by preparing the ground and laying plastic at the end of summer and then in autumn we hand plant in rows that have been developed to suit the local area’s soil conditions. After planting we nurture the plants until we pick in spring. It takes about a month from the time the flower opens until the berry is perfect to pick.” Over the last 38 years Gala Berry has worked very hard to grow sustainably, improve their horticultural methods and reduce their carbon footprint. To achieve this, they regularly review the latest technology, methods and procedures. They use alternative weed and pest control methods where possible, recycle farm waste and use 100% recycled and recyclable PET plastics from New Zealand manufacturers. “We also aim to purchase products and services that are made locally and in an ethical manner,” they tell us. The Ashby family have always been proud to be a part of their community and since purchasing the operation in Omaha have begun selling scrumptious fresh strawberries picked daily from

Prince Charles and Camilla
Chances are you’ve seen a few of Fiona Godall’s photos before. She has been covering major New Zealand sporting events, national news and royal visits for more than 20 years – including the recent visit by Prince Charles and Camilla. “I got called in to do a bit of Charles and Camilla’s walkabout in downtown Auckland,” Fiona says. “I was shooting from the crowd since they already had a pool photographer, but they ended up coming right over and shaking hands with the people next to me. So that was fun!” Fiona grew up in rural Whangarei, but didn’t have many opportunities to pursue photography back then. “At high school I wanted to do photography but they wouldn’t let me because I hadn’t done Art.

So I didn’t end up doing anything in school. Later on I spent some time as a nanny in New York, and that’s where everything got going for me. I did some photography courses and started by taking photos around New York City. It was amazing! It gave me a grounding photographing people – which is what I enjoy most. I prefer to shoot people in their natural environment, rather than in a studio.”
says. “All the time I spent working for Fairfax gave me the chance to build relationships and show people how I worked. But freelancing can be challenging because you’re only as good as your last job. You have to be able to live within that environment where you don’t know where the next job is coming from. It’s not for everyone!”
After returning home she began studying and working in the Waikato. She then moved up to Auckland and began a productive 15 years as a writer and photographer with Fairfax Media. After the birth of her second daughter eight years ago, she decided it was time to start freelancing.
“Arriving in Christchurch on the Friday of the mosque shootings to cover the days afterwards was an unforgettable experience,” Fiona recalls. “The bravery and solidarity of the locals was inspiring and the stillness and quietness of the city was very eerie.”
“Freelance life has been really good for me,” Fiona

what brought her and the family to Kaipara Flats. “Both my husband and I grew up rurally, so we wanted that for our kids. We love that they can bring their lambs to school, that kind of thing. Also, I started horse riding with some friends from around this area about six years ago. They are amazing ladies and they’ve become part of the family, so that was a motivation too.” Fiona has only been here since July, but she and the kids already have some favourite local spots.

NEW & NOTED MEET ME WHERE THE SUN SETS POP-UP Created out of a love of people, travel and beauty, collecting treasures, having adventures and working with local craftspeople. A belief in things authentic and true. Rachel O’Malley has embarked on a journey of bringing family made, artisanal products to New Zealand. Every product has been sourced sustainably and with everyone's future in mind. It is about the craftspeople, their stories, their art and building relationships. The collection of homewares and furniture are hand-made from families in countries Rachel has visited. “We want to create a future for them, their families and their craft – and then in turn provide our customers with knowledge they are supporting local artisan families from these countries and that their products all have a story.” Pop-up store located down the lane beside The Bach, Matakana. EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN MATAKANA VILLAGE
The Mangawhai wharf was built in 1880 and demolished in the 1950s. The wharf was the gateway to the region before road and rail. Rebuilding it in the same location would give the Mangawhai community a wonderful recreational asset for families and children, reconnect it to it’s past, and provide a focal point for visitors. The Mangawhai Historic Wharf Trust, a registered charity, is seeking to raise $80,000 via a PledgeMe campaign to fund the resource consent approval process. For more information, and to pledge, visit the trust’s website or Facebook page. www.mangawhaihistoricwharf.com www.facebook.com/mangawhaihistoricwharf
A rare opportunity has arisen in the much loved heart of Matakana, but you’ll have to be quick to take advantage of it! One of the successful Matakana Village retail businesses is moving on as they are in need of a little more room for their growing business. If you are interested in being a part of the busy and prosperous Matakana Village and think you’re business would be a great fit, email Richard to find out more.

“We walked out to them and called ‘Kia Ora’ and they welcomed us onboard. We walked around with the crew, checking everything out. They showed us how they used ropes to harness themselves in wild weather, how they were sleeping in shifts and what they had in their tiny little bunk areas." Growing up in the far north, Melissa used to live one bay over from the late Sir Hekenukumai Puhipi (Sir Hector Busby), the renowned Māori navigator and traditional waka builder who began the build of the waka hourua Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti, named after his late wife. “The encounter was extra special since some of the crew was from our iwi, Ngati Kahu,” says Melissa. The entire waka was traditionally built using lashing rather than nails, and the crew use celestial navigation as their main method of finding their way. ARE ANIMALS REALLY THE PURRFECT GIFT? WORDS
CARLIE-BLANCHETT-BURTON
The idea of a cute little puppy or kitten under the tree can be very appealing but Christmas may not be the best time to bring a new animal into your life. Christmas in New Zealand coincides with summer holidays and your new family member will need to be around to look after them and get to know them. An animal is a member of the family so they need ongoing love and care. This includes healthy food, a safe environment, exercise and trips to the vet for regular check ups. You may need to make changes to your property such as adding a cat door or fencing. It is best to write a list to make sure you have the time and resources to give your animal a safe and loving home. A pet should never be an impulse buy. If you do decide to bring a pet into your family please consider adoption - there are many gorgeous animals looking for forever homes. Julie’s Animal Refuge is one of the best places to adopt from. Adoption costs just $80 and all cats and kittens are desexed, microchipped, house trained and registered to you. An adult pet can be a great addition to your family as they are already used to interacting with people and it is easier to tell what their personality is like when you visit them. If it is not the right time to add a pet to your life than there are some great alternatives. It is the experience of spending time with animals that children most appreciate. A voucher for an animal experience is a great idea, giving them all the fun of spending time with animals with none of the responsibilities of being a pet owner. Sheepworld Warkworth offers a sheep and dog show with a very cute petting zoo and Ti Point Reptile Park offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of reptiles. A horse trek at Pakiri is the perfect gift for an older child or teenager. And if your home is perfectly set up for pets and you have love to give please talk to Julie about the option of becoming a foster home.

WASTE-FREE CHRISTMAS WORDS
SARAH
BRAY
Fast forward to noon on Christmas day and the scene is one of chaos: screeds of torn paper lay wistfully forgotten, boxes are stuffed with scrunched paper, bows and ribbons lay limp and lost. So much waste forgotten in a second!
paper shopping bags, why not use those to wrap a gift. For a yesteryears’ parcel look, use brown string around the parcel, then forage on the day for a few sprigs of lavender or rosemary (or any foliage) for added rustic charm.
What about if this Christmas your family made a change and you decided not to purchase gift wrap, ribbon and boxes? Your family could take the challenge and create beautifully wrapped gifts with a few simple and creative ideas!
3. Potato Stamp Gift Wrapping: kids love this one! Make potato stamps to decorate your own gift wrapping.
1. Furoshiki: the Art of Japanese Fabric Wrapping. Use off cuts from some fabric or a funky scarf from a secondhand shop. Wrap the gift in the fabric and tie off at the top, super easy. But if you need extra help, look up Furoshiki online and you will find plenty of tutorials. 2. Paper Shopping Bags: with the increase in
4. Reuse gift boxes, hampers: keep a stash of gift baskets or hampers from deliveries or gifts over the year and reuse them. 5. Recycle: of course if this is not your year to reinvent Christmas wrapping in your house, then that’s ok...but save this year’s Christmas wrapping and ribbons for reuse next year! www.facebook.com/PlasticFreeMangawhai

THE ART OF ECO-GIFTING WORDS
It is now more than ever important to support local; avoid the craziness of going to the malls this year and take your time and enjoy your gift shopping. Stroll the local markets for some artisan food goodies and handmade crafts. Check out some of our great stores selling locally or ethically made products. Here’s a few great waste-less ideas for the giving. Buy an experience. From a mini golf voucher to a fishing charter, there’s so many to choose from, no waste and people remember experiences, hey
JOSIE
JACKSON
they might even take you along! Make something. It’s easy to whip up a batch of cookies for the neighbours; get creative and make your own natural body care products; use your skills art, sewing, whatever you have. Frame up a kids artwork for nan and pop. Buy second-hand. We have so many amazing local op shops supporting great charities, let’s support them. You often find barely used or even brand new items for sale. A great present sorted and money to charity... it’s a win win.
Go green, plants are cool! A Venus flytrap for the curious, a butterfly mix for the kids, an orchid for mum, a vegetable seedling kit for the flatters and for the killer of all plants... a cactus should be safe. For the person you think has everything? Give a donation in their name. Charities are always in need, especially at this time of year. Give what you can.

THE MERRIEST CHRISTMAS WORDS
Pene Fox’s Ti Point home sparkles, glitters and glows. Soft carols play and the scent of pine is in the air. It’s a shrine to the silly season and Christmas trees are everywhere. Around 104 of them actually, of all shapes and sizes. Why so many? “One year, ages ago, I’d already put our tree up when I saw another one that I really liked,” says Pene. “I suddenly realised that there was no rule that said you had to have just one tree! I put it in the bedroom – but of course the other rooms had to have one, too. And then I was on a roll.” Pene, a dispensing optician, is the youngest of five. She has very happy memories of big family Christmases at their home in the Coromandel and

is keen to replicate the experience for partner Shayne and son Millah (12). She collects vintage trees, rescue trees and emergency trees – if people haven’t had time to get their tree done she can whip one over, fully decorated. When a friend had a difficult Christmas to get through recently, Pene took a little tree and gifts over as a heart-warming surprise to come home to. Her top tips: “Fairy lights are key – I always put them on first, close to the trunk to create a glow. Buy in the January sales! And um… good storage is vital,” she says sagely (her boxes of baubles are all colour-coded). Skinny pop-up camping trees and upside down hanging trees

Fave Christmas song? “Snoopy’s Christmas of course – I’ll have it played at my funeral!” Outdoors it’s quite restrained, with only a twometre inflatable Santa by the door. “Shayne has his limits,” says Pene, as she opens a bottle of bubbly. “It’s just such a magical time of year,” she sighs. “Christmas trees are my yoga...they’re my zen,” she giggles. But we all agree, as we clink glasses – there’s only pure happiness in this home.

A COFFEE REVOLUTION AT THE ROASTERY ESPRESSO BAR
In the upper terrace of the Matakana Village car park, there’s a coffee revolution going on. The old green shed has been transformed into The Roastery Espresso Bar, with the characteristic flair of Lindesay Smith and the team at Matakana Coffee Roasters. The creation of The Roastery was inspired by continued growth of the company’s wholesale business, as well as growing demand from customers to understand the provenance of what they eat and drink. “We wanted to offer a richer coffee experience by inviting customers into The Roastery, where we can share our knowledge and they can experience the love and care that goes into crafting each blend,” says Lindesay. A glass wall allows customers to observe the roasting of the company’s award-winning blends, while inhaling the aromas, sipping their flat whites and catching up on local news. A dedicated training facility will offer coffee appreciation and barista classes, and new lines of roasted beans will soon be available, including Single Estate and Cup of Excellence coffees. When the Farmers’ Market launched the following year, Matakana Coffee Roasters was a founding stall and Lindesay has been serving up velvety smooth, award-winning coffee every Saturday morning since. “I never get tired of the market buzz,” he says. The Roastery’s modern rustic interior has been lovingly crafted by a team of local artisans. “We’re proud that every element has been hand-crafted for The Roastery, using sustainable building methods,” says Lindesay. With the volume of coffee dispatched daily to cafés, supermarkets and wholesalers, Lindesay says there’s always plenty going on at The Roastery. Customers can browse a curated selection of home coffee-making equipment and as distributors for the Vibiemme Espresso machines and Mazzer grinders, the team is happy to provide advice and source the right equipment for personal or commercial needs. INDUSTRIAL VINTAGE FURNITURE HOMEWARES & GIFTS
Old School Inc. is well known for its stunning vintage homewares and furniture. As we head into summer the shop is keeping true to its character, and is glowing from the fresh energy and enthusiasm new owner Leigh has brought with her. Leigh Courtenay knows the store well as one of the best customers of the previous owner Haidee. Her eclectic life and passion for travelling and collecting have uniquely prepared her to take the shop to a new level. Amongst other things, she has worked as a production manager, as a retail vendor in Toronto and in the fishing industry in Iceland. The space is beautifully curated and at least 70% of the stock is authentically vintage, with carefully chosen modern pieces to complete the look. Authenticity is key in a market where many retailers are selling faux vintage items. Leigh understands this, as she is a collector herself. In fact, some items struggle to make it on to the shop floor. It is this passion that makes Leigh a perfect match for Old School Inc. She is able to talk vintage finds with the best of them and it is clear to see how engaging and delightful the customers find her energy. While I am there, two interior designers ask Leigh for her details for their retail fit-outs – her aesthetic is right on the pulse of the vintage industrial trend that is taking Auckland by storm. Old School Inc. is a must visit for any vintage enthusiast.

The brief for this svelte Great Barrier home was less about the ‘look’ and more about the ‘feel’. “The clients wanted a dwelling to enhance the experience of being on the island – to embrace its sense of peace, quiet and blissful isolation,” says Paul Clarke from Studio2 Architects, based in Parnell, Auckland. “They wanted to be able to see the trees, for the house to be full of sun and it to become a holiday destination for future generations of the family.” The result is a completely off-grid hideaway, with Forest Stewardship Council Certification (FSC). The FSC is a global certification system that

provides a guarantee that forest products come from a responsibly managed source – and verifies that products are handled correctly at every stage of production, from forest to shelf. “The clients had already planted nearly 6,000 trees on the property, which we harvested, milled and used for building the house or will be used for fuelling the fire,” says Paul. “Blackwood timber from the site was used to make cabinetry and furniture that celebrates its locality.” “The house was laid out on a module that allowed for an economy of build. the trees and the rhythm that is inherent in their natural growth.” An outdoor shower and bath continue the connection with the outdoors, with solar heated rainwater collected from the narrow monopitch roof. Exposed trusses and raw concrete details on the inside complete the natural look. Although mostly used as a holiday home, the owners also do some work on the island and stay in the house for extended periods of time. This had to be taken into consideration during the design process – it couldn’t be a basic bach. Studio2 Architects have earned a well-deserved

reputation for their unique house designs. They previously created The Crossing at Pakiri and are now working on another Great Barrier retreat. Of course building a home on Great Barrier Island – 100km north-east of Auckland – presents some unique challenges. “Because it’s an island, it's not easy to get materials to site,” says Paul. “We tried to avoid using steel – due to our limitations on transportation – and did some of the in-situ concrete work on site. Luckily we found a great local builder who could craft the house, and the clients were proactive in assisting with getting everything to site.” Another challenge the architects faced was the fact that the house site sits on a flood plain – but
with some clever thinking they were able to turn this to their advantage. “It meant the floor level needed to be elevated a metre above the ground,” says Paul. “This turned out to be advantageous as it helped create the ‘grandstand’ effect we wanted at the northern end of the building.” Paul says that everyone involved is very pleased with how the house came together. “The clients absolutely love it and love sharing it with their family and friends. It’s beautiful, and we were privileged to work there.”

LOCAL SPORT
A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: WHEELCHAIR TURBO TOUCH
From the beginning of 2019 Parafed Northland has been involved with the WIN Project, a Kiwi Sport and Halberg funded project in collaboration with NZ Touch, which provides the opportunity to participate in Wheelchair Turbo Touch (WCTT). With this project they have been able to provide schools, teachers, students and the wider community with the opportunity to have fun and compete playing Wheelchair Turbo Touch. “This adaptable sport offers more than we could have hoped for,” says Sharon Carroll, Sports and Events Coordinator for Parafed Northland. They have visited over ten local schools and facilitated this adaptable sport, and in return the schools have acknowledged that having WCTT and Parafed Northland back again offers more opportunities to their students and provides teachers with the tools to break down barriers. Students engage in a sport that is out of their comfort zone and in doing so gain an
understanding of the athleticism players must have to play at a competitive level. “The connections with the HOD’s and Sporting Coordinators within these schools has been extremely powerful as it has enabled us to make strong connections, which will hopefully lead to further opportunities to grow more adaptable sporting options for Northlanders,” says Sharon. They are currently working alongside the Touch Tournament held in Waipu’s Caledonian Park every Thursday afternoon/evening as part of the weekly Touch Tournament. The organiser of the Tournament, Lisa Jones, has been instrumental in providing the WCTT sessions to run in conjunction with the scheduled games. Each week two teams from the family teams rotation participate in a game of WCTT in the Celtic Barn adjacent to the sports ground. The word is out and now Sharon finds everyone coming along from young children, college
students, mums and dads are giving this awesome sport a try. “It’s great to see the response and so many people participating and loving everything great this sport provides. It’s fun, competitive, great for meeting new people, removing barriers and learning new skills.” Sharon says, “We owe a big thank you to everyone who has collaborated to make this project happen: Kiwi Sport, The Halberg Foundation, Lisa Jones and the Waipu Rugby Club, The Waipu Celtic Barn, NZ Touch, Northland Schools and the awesome participants who seem to go away buzzing.” For more information about the WCTT program and support for anyone living with a physical disability in Northland then get in touch with either Sharon or Hannah at Parafed Northland or visit their website. sharon@parafednorthland.co.nz www.parafednorthland.co.nz

GET CREATIVE IN MATAKANA WORDS
Creative Matakana is entering its fourth year in May, with another week of transformative creative experiences on the menu, running 2-8 May 2020.

he’ll teach screen-printing on some surprising materials to then transform into sculpture.
Most workshops need no prior experience and there’s an emphasis on a friendly welcome. Tutors are all highly experienced and most are awardwinning artists in their own right. Comments from past participants included ‘our tutor always made us feel talented and valued’, ‘generous and inspirational’, and ‘I learned so many new techniques’. Five-day workshops in 2020 will include painting with Toby Raine, creative writing with Anne Kennedy, screen-printing for sculpture with Jeff Thomson, travel sketching with Erin Hill, painting and drawing with Helene Carpenter, textile art with Alysn Midegelow-Marsden, and making your own ukulele with Lindsay Marks. Toby Raine is an experienced tutor and an artist highly regarded for his thick, slabby oil portraits. For this workshop he’ll be encouraging you to think outside the square and have fun with some radical paint techniques. Jeff Thomson, Kiwi corrugated iron artist extraordinaire, needs no introduction – he’s taught with Creative Matakana from year one and his fun workshops always sell out fast. This year
Writer Anne Kennedy is one of our most experienced tutors; her recent novel ‘The Ice Shelf’ was on the Ockham Book Awards list this year. Erin Hill has an international reputation as someone who can teach absolutely anyone to document their travels using sketch and watercolour. Local multi-media artist Helene Carpenter is particularly good at getting people to find out what they’re good at and why using a wide variety of creative media, and Alysn Midegelow-Marsden will bring inspiration from ancient geological formations to combine fine metal and textiles with stitch techniques. And if you’ve ever wanted to make your own ukulele but know you’ll never quite get around to it, spend five days with master Luthier Lindsay Marks and you’ll create a concertlevel instrument to last a lifetime. We have some extra short courses (2-3 days) in 2020, by popular demand. Dr Tabatha Forbes combines her passion for nature with art in teaching delicate botanical painting while Motueka resident Fleur Woods paints fabric, then stitches gorgeous floral designs over it – a very stylish angle on embroidery. Experienced tutor and artist Di Halstead will teach still-
life photography, Ingrid Anderson tutors retro screen-printing and former New Zealand Creative Photographer of the Year Mandi Lynn will give short workshops on smartphone photography and video. Each year there’s an extra element to Creative Matakana. In 2017, it was all about cutting-edge food; 2018 brought garden design and 2019 had a Japanese design theme. In 2020, there’ll be a series of one-off days with an architecture and design focus, which will have input from leading professionals (delicious lunches included). There’s the Small Space Matakana team and architecture photographer Simon Devitt; a tour of the exceptional Bream Tail community, a straw bale home and architect Noel Lane taking us behind the scenes at Matakana Village and Brick Bay. Extra events will include the Harcourts welcome evening at the Vivian Gallery in Matakana, the special participant’s dinner and the Friday evening arts finale, chaired by the irrepressible Vivian Gallery director, Scott Lawrie. Bookings open on Monday 13 January 2020 at 8am. Be ready – some will sell out on the same day. Subscribe online to our newsletter for updates! www.creativematakana.nz www.facebook/creativematakana

SEVEN INTENTIONS/SEVEN DISTRACTIONS REBECCA BARCLAY CLIST
‘Seven intentions/Seven Distractions’ is a compelling exhibition that will draw you in with provocative symbols and tense narrative riffs. Whether to convict or repel, either way you will be left counting your own vices and virtues. The work of Mangawhai artist, Rebecca Barclay Clist, is an exploration of tension based on the concept of good intention and distraction from it. We are easily intrigued and lost in layered paintwork that splatters and sweeps in tandem against sharp, realistic imagery placed to create a narrative. Metaphorically speaking, we lose
In this day and age everyone has an opinion. Rebecca joins in to have her say too - you will never see her yelling from the rooftops, but paint offers a more subtle voice that allows her to speak her mind.
humanity's distraction from their maker (as she sees it), what we worship and the price we pay. For instance, lust while forgetting love, wrath with no room for grace and envy that excludes rather than encourages. Rebecca observes that these are some of the examples that break down healthy relationships within society.
‘Seven intentions/Seven distractions’ is dealing with conflict and tension between God’s intention for humanity, and how distracted humanity has become. Considering our current society, Rebecca wants to construct a conversation around
Rebecca chose the seven deadly sins to contrast the seven days of creation (the intentions/ intended good) as they are both concepts that are generally known and create a natural tension. Interestingly, the seven deadly sins have been
the moral high ground and are seduced by the amorphae of modern life.

mined for narrative content throughout popular culture but its binary, the seven days of creation is little spoken of. Humanity’s fixation on sin and vice is becoming more prevalent than ever and the implications of this is high. Historically, the 17th-century Vanitas artists painted symbolic still life artworks in order to prompt people to consider what they are filling their lives with, and how they are potentially ignoring God’s good intentions. Ultimately these artworks are hoped to warn people of their deliverance post-death. Rebecca too aims to stir hearts and emotions. Despite not being still life subject matter, these paintings share the same purpose as the traditional vanitas and are embedded with clever symbols. Rebecca hopes her paintings will make viewers consider the grace
required to live a good life and understand the power to steward good intentions for humanity. Rebecca says, “I have no right to judge and will not, but I am interested in ideas of moral fibre and am expressing my own personal faith. Some might say it is limited or disagree completely - but I am exercising my right to speak out seeing that I have found my voice.” This exhibition runs from 28 November 11 December at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery and Rebecca will be in the gallery giving an artist talk during the exhibition, so see her website for more details.

REVIEW
TEMPIST FUJIT “HOME” SINGLE REVIEW WORDS
JAMIE
DENTON
ass, dynamic, hook-laden gem of a track. Musically solid, the classic combination of tight drum and bass and crystal clear, funky/ska’esque off-beat guitar really works for this track. In particular, it works to really elevate the vocals – providing a tight, yet interesting musical bedrock for the lead vocal to sit over. The rocker in me longed for the return of my long hair, especially during the facemelting guitar gymnastics of the solo section!
Hailing from Northland, alternative rock four-piece Tempist Fujit — their name a clever play on the Latin phrase ‘tempus fugit’, often translated to ‘time flies’ — have been kicking around for a number of years now. Indeed, they have already released their debut album ‘Time Flies’ in 2018. However, nestled as the centre-piece of that album lies their latest single, the anthemic culture-fusing ’Home’. Opening with a lush, multi-layered intro that combines natural birdsong with silky-smooth vocal harmonies, the attention is immediately
grabbed by the heart-felt rendition of a traditional tauparapara (or karakia). While the inclusion of a Te Reo Maori is not a completely unique concept (having also been used by artists such as Tiki Taane and more recently by Alien Weaponry), Tempist Fujit use this in a fantastic way. The Te Reo piece is short, sharp, and incredibly powerful. It reaches deep into your soul, and as the clean guitar chimes under the final words, you just know you’re in for something special. Indeed, ’Home’ lives up to its intro. This is a kick-
The vocals are gorgeous, but also restrained – you just know that lead vocalist Lisa has a massive voice that she’s keeping contained. But it is that use of vocal restrain that makes this track interesting, there’s a tension that seems to be literally begging for a massive high note, but it’s a note that she just never quite lets come. She hints at it a few times, but steps back from the edge before leaping. Through this incredible play with tension and release, the listener’s attention is kept throughout multiple (even consecutive) listens. My favourite part of this gem of a track is the bridge section, which brings back the cross-cultural groove with the tauparapara/Maori vocals and the chorus vocals playing off each other. It’s an absolutely killer section, that must rip the roof off venues live. www.tempistfujit.com www.facebook.com/tempistfujit

CORNERSTONE ROOTS PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS MASAYA AND VANGROVE AT THE LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE Cornerstone Roots - original roots music from Raglan play one of their all time favourite venues! Cornerstone Roots is a six piece group that consists of four family members: vocalist/ guitarist Brian Ruawai and bass player, partner Naomi Tuaopepe, with daughter Kaea Ruawai on drums and energetic, vibrant son Reiki Ruawai on vocals. Playing alongside the family of musicians are longtime members Aaron Bush on percussion and Nicholas Stevens on keyboards. The band pay respect to the colossal world of roots music, while confidently bringing their own influences and positive messages to the mix. They bring along with them some exciting acts from the Waikato: Masaya and Vangroove. Masaya have talent to burn, as a next-gen charismatic indie / roots / soul band originally from Raglan. Formed in the summer of 2019, the band is made up of brother and sister Reiki Ruawai guitar/ vocals and Kaea Ruawai on drums, with Muroki on Bass and Jules on lead guitar. Their music is catchy, soulful and wildly unpredictable. The band have recently supported Mako Roads’ sold out shows and are starting to build a buzz with their peers. Creating a new music loosely defined as "Indie Roots" the band have already released two singles: ’Tales of the Moonshine’ and ’Shake the Sun’ and are about to release their debut EP - ‘Tongue &
Groove’ in November. They are super-solid, fun humans that live in the now, skate, surf and think five minutes into the future. VanGrove are a high energy, four-piece band of lads from Cambridge, best known for their strong vocals and melodic riffs, which can be loosely described as “Psychedelic Surf Rock”. VanGrove’s original style, catchy tunes and emotive lyrics, has resulted in the continued growth of their fan base. To satisfy their ever increasing monthly listeners on Spotify, VanGrove released their debut singles ‘Waves’
and ‘Serotonin’ earlier this year, and have recently released their first EP ‘Simple Pleasures’. The band’s musical influences include, Sublime, Sticky Fingers, and Ocean Ally. Doors open at 8pm sharp and this is an R18 event.
