NO LIMITS SURF AND SKATE CO. When the opportunity to take over a warehouse space opposite Mangawhai Activity Zone arose, Evan King and his partner Nicole Seyle jumped at it. As a local business owner of the family friendly Wood Street Pizzeria he knows only too well how well subscribed Mangawhai is with kids who love to surf and skate. “Nicole is an avid surfer having surfed around the world and after chatting with many locals whilst in the water, the idea of opening a store that specializes in the ‘hardware’ of both the surf world and skate world was a seriously viable opportunity. We are lucky to have an ex-pro skater onboard who will also provide lessons. We have great relationships with the local surf school and board repairs next door to the warehouse at Small Kine. All the stars aligned,” says Evan. Opening Thursday 26 November at 194 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads. www.nolimitssurfandskate.co.nz | info@nolimitssurfandskate.co.nz

The store is beautifully designed with the stylish eye of Rachel Drinnan. It evolved from the popularity of Māori styling in the Unity Recycle Boutique which moved from a physical space to online during New Zealand's first lockdown. “Customers embraced it along with their passion for preloved, creating unique looks,” says Rupapera. Pure and Simple Darryl Ingham and Ben Moore are two local water treatment professionals providing solutions to complex water quality problems. They were both born and raised in Warkworth, but only met in 2017 and have since formed their business, The Pure Water Project Ltd. “We love the challenge of taking a raw water source and engineering a solution to provide any water quality our clients choose," they tell us. "From stock water on farms, drinking water for homes and community supplies, to ultrapure water for hospitals and industry.”

catalytic silica treatment media was added to break down the silica and reduce its ability to form scale. And as an option, natural coconutbased carbon to dechlorinate the water – reducing the taste and smell associated with chlorine without using plastic filter cartridges.

They are representatives of Kinetico water treatment products for New Zealand and in 2019 travelled to one of the largest water trade shows in the world, Aquatech Amsterdam. Representing New Zealand, they met with Kinetico’s other distribution partners from around the world to discuss the different challenges other countries faced and how they are overcoming them. On their list was exploring a new technology for treating silica in drinking water.

By using these products, they have reduced the upfront and ongoing costs associated with using the traditional method of reverse osmosis. “It is a good trade-off between price, performance and water conservation.” They are however taking a cautious approach due to the new technology. They have seen the differences and ease in cleaning shower glass, taps and fixtures, but acknowledge performance is not at the same level as reverse osmosis.

Knowing the local issues experienced in Warkworth, they were keen to find a more practical solution than conventional technologies. The system which has evolved has been in various trials for the past ten months and includes a Kinetico water softener to treat the hardness in the water. Secondly, a

The benefits of having clean, pure water though do not start and end with taste and smell, they also extend to producing water that is less harsh on your clothes and skin; with trial customers commenting on a reduction in their children’s eczema in particular. Because of this Darryl and Ben

have concentrated on producing a ‘whole house system’ which focuses not only on drinking but the water in which clothes are washed in, the water which runs through the dishwasher, the water which your hair is washed in just to name a few. By treating water at the entry point to your home you will be at the best advantage to receive clean water from every outlet. Darryl and Ben are experts at treating challenging bore water supplies. Following last summer’s drought, they have worked with customers on either providing solutions for new bores or helping get old bores up and running again to ensure they have a safe and consistent supply of water. “Using treated bore water to top up a rainwater tank is a great idea.” For more information visit their new website www.purewaterproject.co.nz or email them directly to discuss any water treatment challenges. ben@purewaterproject.co.nz darryl@purewaterproject.co.nz

Shona McCullagh: Bringing the Love It’s a good thing Leigh local Shona McCullagh is warmly approachable, because her pedigree is somewhat daunting. With a list of achievements and accolades that’s seemingly endless, there are only a handful of others as close to arts royalty in New Zealand as she is. Words Kathy Hunter

Over nearly four decades as a dancer and choreographer, Shona has either founded or collaborated with some of our most beloved dance companies, including Limbs, The Douglas Wright Company, The Human Garden and the Royal NZ Ballet. She formed the New Zealand Dance Company in 2012 – it has brought us some of our best dance, and is still going strong. Shona’s innovative choreography has also added immeasurably to theatre, TV and movies, including three of her own films. She was named a New Zealander of the Year in 1999, became a Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2000 and a NZ Arts Foundation Laureate in 2002. It’s a lot to get your head around. She laughs. “Honestly, I just follow my passion.” Shona has now taken the role of Artistic Director of the Auckland Arts Festival for the next four years, beginning in 2021. She’s raring to go, but knows it’ll be quite a ride. “2020 has been terrible, but as we know, adversity can often bring brilliant innovation.” AAF 2021 has a theme for the first time – aroha. But as Shona points out the Māori concept of aroha goes way beyond simply ‘love’. It encompasses the five senses, the ego and the intellect; it covers spirit, compassion and enlightenment.

|

Photo John McDermott

With guidance from Ataahua Papa (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Koroki Kahukura), the festival’s first Kaihautū Māori/Director of Māori Programming, events will be grouped under three sub-headings. Aroha ki te tangata, kindness towards people; aroha ki te taiao, care for the environment and aroha ki ngā korero, respect for our stories. “Our culture reflects who we are,” Shona says. “That’s especially important right now. We’re living in a revolution of disruption, and to express and witness our human responses creatively can be soothing and grounding.” And with the mental health issues arising from pandemic isolation, participating in live performance brings a tangible human communion that’s enormously powerful. “Youth audiences are my favourite – it’s such a potent transformational time. In particular, studying the arts teaches empathy, identity, trust, discipline and connection to others – it’s the best way to create a deeper understanding of the human condition.” From every perspective of society and the economy, Shona says, exposure to the arts develops creative problem solving, which will be essential for future challenges. “So in education, it absolutely must be STEAM – not STEM.” With her years of experience crafting

performances, does she now have a fail-safe recipe for creating those moments of perfect synergy? “My job is to find astonishing artists and put them together with brilliant producers and crews. The rest is about the audience, and a different mix each time is what makes it so exciting!” Shona and her partner, composer John Gibson, lived for nearly a decade in Leigh when their children were small. Now they spend as much time up here as possible; Shona replenishes her energy gardening and walking the clifftops. But in March 2021, she’s bringing the AAF on the road with her – to Warkworth. Three shows will feature at the Warkworth Town Hall. ‘My Name is Moana’ celebrates the ocean through an uplifting mix of music and stories hosted by Moana Maniapoto; ‘Sorry For Your Loss’ is a one-woman theatre piece by newcomer Cian Gardner, who plays her own mother, her father and herself in both past and present, and Gitbox Rebellion is an eight-piece, genre-defying, acoustic guitar ensemble that’ll blow your socks off. “I’m so happy to be able to bring the Festival to an area and community I love so much – and as long as the audiences come, I’m keen to build on it each year.” www.aucklandfestival.co.nz

Reaching out at Christmas Time Christmas can be a stressful time, so Te Whai Community Trust is preparing special ‘Aroha Food Baskets’ to be collected a few days before Christmas to help some families cope. As at other times in the year, mental and physical wellbeing benefit from exercise and activities you enjoy. “Be kind. Stay safe and plan to keep everything simple. Realistic expectations help reduce stress,” says co-chair Sue Poynter. Some families plan a picnic or barbeque and everyone in the group or family can help with preparation and clean-up tasks. Home-made cards and gifts created from shells, drift wood and string are often as exciting as something purchased. Exciting little gifts might also be found at the St. John shop or Mangawhai Opportunity Factory shop. Te Whai Community Trust coordinates a range of social support services in the rapidly growing Mangawhai area. Based in the Rose Madson Cottage at Mangawhai Domain, the services are co-located with the Community

Gardens and new Community Compost site. The gardens are a hive of activity on Friday mornings 8-10am, and each week Plunket play group meets. There is a Toy Library playgroup, and there are counselling sessions, groups for people with anxiety, and budgeting advice. Te Whai Community Trust’s Families Wellbeing programme is a strengths-based service with wraparound whanau support for families who seek help and advice. Te Whai Sages help seniors and reduce social isolation. These services support wellbeing, social connection, focus on priorities and positive self-talk. Reach out if you or someone you know needs help. For a free workshop to help methamphetamine users make different choices and work toward a brighter future call Paul 021 926 350. Top New Zealand Wine Picks for Summer Te Kano Rose - 100% hand harvested whole bunch pressed Central Otago Pinot Noir grapes. This is an elegant dry rosĂŠ with flavours of watermelon, pink grapefruit, raspberries and pepper spices on a smoothflowing palate with lacy acidity. Ideal with cured dry meats or antipasto platter. Cru Sauvignon Blanc - Unlike the grassy Sauvignon Blancs that New Zealand has been so used to, Cru is a sophisticated wine with bright stone fruit characters. Sourced from 25 year old vines from Renwick, Marlborough, this will have you reevaluating your relationship with Sauvignon Blanc. Diggers Law Pinot Noir - A classical styled Central Otago Pinot Noir displaying a

concentrated core of fresh cherries and blackcurrants balanced by warm sweet vanilla oak. A perfect accompaniment to BBQ’d meats. Peregrine Pinot Gris - An organic dry style Pinot Gris with fresh and bright aromatics of apricot, pear and ginger leading into a luscious palate layered with citrus, stone fruit and spice. The ideal wine match for the day's seafood catch. Leveret Estate Chardonnay - This single vineyard Chardonnay oozes class. Elements of toasted almonds and grilled peaches lead into a finish of pineapple and ripe melon rounded out with beautifully integrated oak. Evan King has a long and successful history

within the hospitality industry and made the move to Mangawhai over five years ago opening the local, family friendly, Wood Street Pizzeria. He found customers lamented about the distinct lack of high end wines, spirits and craft beers available for purchase in off licences locally, and so two years ago he set about rectifying this issue and The Village Wines and Spirits was born. Stocking a small but carefully curated selection, some of which are hard to find elsewhere, The Village prides itself on educating customers by hosting regular tasting events and are always eager to assist customers on their journey finding new products that suit their palates. info@thevillagewines.co.nz www.village-wines-mangawhai.myshopify.com

Free Range Ham Glaze 9kg Whole-bone-in free range ham 220g Local runny honey 300ml Jones Road apple cider 2 x Cinnamon sticks 5 x Cloves 4 x Star Anise 170g Dijon mustard 3g English mustard powder 200ml Apple juice (keep separate for roasting)

Firstly choose your ham carefully: labels can be deceiving and it pays to ask your butcher to find the true providence of the pig. Starting with a good raw product always produces the best result. Free range hams have a lot more flavour and typically have a far lower percentage of water. To prepare the Ham

Start at the knuckle joint and with a small sharp knife score the skin in a zigzag pattern the whole way round. Next gently peel off the outer layer of skin, working your way from the widest part towards the knuckle joint. Keep at least 1cm of the fatty layer on the leg (this is the tasty part). Score the fat ensuring not to cut too deep as you don’t want to cut through to the meat layer in the process.

Glaze

Preheat your oven to 140°C fan bake. Combine all ingredients into a pot and bring to the boil, stirring continuously, reduce the heat and continue to stir until the liquid has reduced by half. Place ham on a wire rack with a roasting tray underneath, and pour half of the glaze over the ham. Add 200ml of apple juice into the bottom of the roasting tray and place the ham into the oven. Baste with extra glaze every 30 minutes. After two hours turn the oven up 200°C and roast for a further 20 minutes.

They will be offering all your festive favourites: Whole Glazed Hams, Hot Smoked Salmon and Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, in addition to their Christmas Heat & Eat meal packages. Pick up will be available from their Matakana kitchen (5/38 Matakana Valley Road...just behind Bayleys) on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Check out their website for more details on how to order.

Fresh Inspiration Coming to Snells Beach Having owned Little and Local Coffee Kitchen for four plus years Mark and Marlane Elley had been waiting for a time when expansion might be possible. They were looking for an opportunity to create a more sustainable community business, creating local jobs and serving great food, coffee and beverages to the Matakana Coast region. Joining forces with Steve and Yvette Barnett recently provided an expanded set of hospitality industry skills and the vision necessary to undertake the purchase of ‘Chairs’ next door with a refit to follow. This also involved the coming together of two businesses, two teams and cultures, with a shared desire to lift the service and offerings available to the community. Time was taken for the team to familiarise themselves with the Chairs' menu. The desire was to continue to deliver the great food service that Caleb and Jo Gradwell had built up with Chairs over the last seven years. The decision was made to maintain the status quo through until Labour weekend to allow the broader team to come to terms with the new combined business and the expanded menu.

Mark says, “The community spoke and we listened regarding the menu items that they loved and wanted us to retain.” During the last couple of months, while in the midst of transition, they also worked on the redesign for the Bistro. Lauren Henderson from House of Creatives, took on the design work, concepts and sourcing, while Josh Perkins of Perkins Brothers Builders worked fabulously to nail down the design details and product decisions.

environment planned for later this year, to

complement the internal refit. With the evening dinner service, wait staff will take orders at your table.

The Little and Local Bar & Bistro is focused on a quality dining experience, with the addition of an exciting wine bar experience and the most Northern Peroni tap beer available in New Zealand. Cabinet food has all moved

over to the Little and Local Coffee Kitchen,

Timeframes were incredibly tight and Mark had the brilliant idea of trying to only have the Bistro side of the business closed for three business days each week. “The team was magnificent in their willingness to work around this craziness. And the combined, larger Little and Local team were fantastic in their help with the clean-up and preparation for trading each week in the midst of the chaos,” he says.

a combined single business, while providing

options for seating and experience, to suit the mood you find yourself in on a given day.

The excitement is palpable, as the Little and Local team prepare themselves for this new and exciting future and the summer season

ahead. “We’re stoked to have this opportunity Mark says.

A New Bohemian Beer Puhoi is a classic wee spot bathed in sun and nestled in bush beside a historic river, just the right distance away from Auckland. It’s rich in history and characters; both of which can usually be found at the iconic Puhoi Pub – a pilgrimage destination for afternoon beers ever since the first settlers turned up. It’s a good little village, and so the team at Puhoi Beer thought a good village deserved a good beer! And just quietly, it’s not bad at all.

Only a month after opening, the Warkworth Hotel has already firmly established itself as the new place to be.

sausage slow-cooked in our master stock, served with our homemade piccalilli, pickled cabbage, onion marmalade and red wine jus."

December marks the start of a gourmet Christmas dinner, which will also be available to book for company Christmas functions.

With two separate dining experiences happily married into one beautifully restored and decorated building, owners Kim and Woody (the restaurateurs behind Stables and Smiths Restaurants at the Matakana Country Park) are feeling proud of their latest endeavour.

Warkworth Hotel takes pride in their cocktails too - everything is made from fresh ingredients, with a lot of the herbs grown out the back.

The owners have aimed to keep the interior design as true as possible to the late 1800s, Victorian era and origins of the building, and keeping a fair bit of local heritage present, by using historic photographs and locally sourced antiques. “Ijust buried myself in that era - from plants and lights, to books and frames,” Woody says. “The baby grand piano is over a hundred years old and they're really hard to come by in New Zealand.”

"The reception from the public has been amazing," Woody says. "Now we're just trying to perfect it and maintain consistency for the perfect hospitality experience for our guests." The Lobby is open seven days from 11am and offers carefully crafted small plates, ideal for sharing. The menu ranges from international fusion through to high-end versions of timeless hotel snacks. “We have embraced classics like the bangers and mash, taking it to the next level," Woody says. "So we're using the award-winning Warkworth Butcher's pork, apple and cider

“The Singapore Sling is like you would find in 1950s New York, and for the discerning drinker, we have a boozy Milk Chocolate Old Fashioned incorporating a blend of whiskey and rum.” On Saturdays, the heat is turned up in The Lobby with a DJ playing swing, jive and groove, again calling on that 1950s New York hotel vibe - something that's receiving great feedback from all ages. The more formal Dining Room is open Thursday to Sunday, offering traditional à la carte contemporary New Zealand dishes. The menu changes regularly to reflect the seasons and the chefs' inspiration.

Looking ahead, the outside seating area will double in size come summer. Woody also has local pianists in mind, to accompany the Sunday Roast on the baby grand piano. "We're hoping for the Warkworth Hotel to become another icon in the community." 9 Queen Street, Warkworth 09 422 1862

A Dose of Vitamin Sea

According to a quote I recently stumbled upon, “Sometimes all you need is vitamin SEA. Cruising along the Auckland Harbour Bridge in our kitted-out classic Land Rover Defender; the bouncy suspension and buzzing of the engine convinced us we were well into the adventure already. Arriving in Matakana, our first stop, where we picked up some yummy local supplies in the local grocery store before taking a stroll around the shops and the riverside. Our appetite whet from the walk, we ordered a feast of fresh briny oysters to go, from Matakana Oysters and picnicked like kings on the rocks behind Leigh Wharf, a picturesque

spot with boats gently rocking in the distance. Next stop was our chosen destination - the Uretiti Beach Campsite. Nestled directly behind the dunes, it delivers up a charming slice of New Zealand - white sandy shores, azure waters and native birdlife.

a drive along the winding back roads to nearby Tawharanui peninsula. Best known for the pristine swimming beach and its punchy surf break where we had lunch on the grassy knoll overlooking the beach at Anchor Bay.

Here, we rolled up our sleeves and went about setting up our fairy-tale-like bell tent. In just half an hour, our luxury abode with all the gear was set up and we were ready to explore the area.

Come nightfall, after sitting outside our tent for hours just mesmerised by the clear view of billions of stars, we retired inside to a peaceful and cosy sleep in our plush camp bed and soft linen. A sure splendid way to recharge to tackle whatever our busy lives back home throw at us.

Our long days were spent lolling between the sand and the waters of Uretiti Beach. We took

Designing a Shared Future Steve Elliston has achieved what many people dream of: living in a small home on a beautiful piece of land with friends, sharing the work, the space – and good company. Words Kathy Hunter

In a way, Steve’s gone back to his roots by moving to rural Matakana. “I was raised on a dairy farm in Te Puke, but I was aware of design from a young age,” Steve says. “Dad would come in from milking and say ‘Who’s moved the bloody furniture again?’” Steve played piano by ear when he was seven-years-old, drew detailed architectural plans inspired by his mother’s Country Life magazines – and always won the flower saucer at school shows. As a flight attendant in his twenties he travelled to the US and fell in love with a man named Jim – and the country itself. He quit flying and found a job with a textile company in LA, the beginning of his career in the design industry. “A couple of projects with high-end interiors opened my eyes to some grand and clever design, which still influences me today.” This is evident in the eclectic range of pieces he has collected over the years. Returning home in 1995 he took a job with Maxwell Rodgers Fabrics; bed throws were the new big thing. “We supplied hotels all over the States as well as Viking Cruise Lines with pure NZ wool throws, working closely with designers to create custom pieces.” Visiting close friends in Matakana over the years, he became captivated by the area. After selling his home in South Auckland, he was offered the opportunity to build a

small house on their land. He accepted with alacrity. Steve managed the project from the city, coming up for weekends, then moving permanently this year. “It’s the home I’ve always wanted to build,” he says. “It’s small and simple, but the space has been used cleverly. It feels rustic, but with some good antiques and lush lighting, it’s also elegant.” “My advice: if you’re on a budget, max it out on your structure and joinery. TradeMe has been my go-to for lighting. The black and gold bathroom wallpaper is from Guthrie Bowron, and the black tapware is from Mitre 10.” Another top tip: use local tradespeople. “They all know and can vouch for each other, and that’s hugely valuable,” Steve says. Steve has high praise for builder Mark Aley of Outline Construction. “I used a draughtsman rather than an architect but since Mark has such a great eye for design and scale we could be flexible. For example, because the walls are 2.7m and the living room is 4m in height, he suggested taller skirting boards to echo that. His input on the overall project was immeasurable.” Park Lane Kitchens, Elite Joinery, Rick Chapman Plumbing and Tui Electrical also contributed to the success of the house. There’s a lovely juxtaposition between the wide, rough-sawn macrocarpa floorboards and the curlicued chandeliers, botanical-print

drapes and leopard-print French armchairs. Steve lifts an opulent, fringed curtain tieback: “Op-shop!” he says with relish. Folding double-glazed doors open the living room to a generous, covered porch with a welcoming fireplace and views of the property. Three windows originally planned were left out in favour of wall space for Steve’s diverse collection of art and furniture, including a baby grand. “It belonged to my grandmother’s brother, known as Gay Gordon, who was a member of the Auckland Operatic Society. Both the piano and he were born in 1896. The piano lives on.” The bedroom was built around the bow front Victorian mahogany tallboy. The bathroom is gentlemanly in a delightfully louche way, and features crystal door knobs and a flash of red along the door edge. Lockdown under COVID showed Steve the value of a shared life and community. He cherished being a part of the extended family bubble for picnics, working bees and card games. His friends on the property concur: “We always wanted to grow old with dear friends around us, so we can look after each other.” www.outlineconstruction.co.nz

Country Life in Kaiwaka For a town nicknamed the ‘little town of lights’ this spacious, open plan house highlights the absolute best in ‘lifestyle’ living. For a discerning couple coming from overseas to settle in the region, it was important that they built something that suited both their needs and the environment. Having a daughter who as an interior designer meant the ‘insides’ of the new build were in a safe pair of helping hands. Certain design and building elements are ‘must-haves’ in creating a conducive living environment on the popular New Zealand concept of a lifestyle block. An uninterrupted inside/outside flow; high ceilings; a multitude of sources for natural light; and an open plan layout so that nothing blocks access to living, working, sleeping and entertainment areas. Those living in a rural lifestyle type of property by nature are sensitive to the environment and what visually blends in with the environment. This ’white house’ demonstrates what can be

achieved when developing a sophisticated country living environment. Customkit is a building company that has been creating a wide range of lifestyle type buildings for generations. Blending Old with the New

The foundation of their offering is the traditional American style barn house concept and then applying the design principles to 21st Century needs. Along the way, the company has carved out a reputation for building eco-friendly, sustainable, durable, and attractive buildings made from New Zealand wood. Today the Customkit portfolio of building designs and options is wide and varied. One of the hallmarks is the high ceilings that are a style statement allowing for inviting living and entertainment spaces. These are made possible by a technology Customkit specialises in called ‘LVL’. Making applications such as beams, rafters,

and columns in a wide range of buildings including houses, commercial, industrial, and rural structures, possible. Building with wood is another benefit of working with Customkit. Not just for the lifestyle look and feel but for several other positive factors and functions. Wood is durable and properly treated can last for a hundred or more years. Wood absorbs energy making it ideal in earthquake-prone areas. It is fire-resistant, warmer, and quieter. Environmentally superior wood is natural, renewable, sustainable and carbon neutral. In the end, the best tapestry to create a country home boils down to the fact that simple designs, utilising space and making the most of exterior views and indoor/outdoor flow are a positive way to create lifestyle perfection. www.customkit.co.nz 09 238 6518

Time to Invest in Outdoor Furniture

ADVERTORIAL

As we think about summer on the deck or in the garden, it's timely to consider the options available when purchasing outdoor furniture. Some are more suitable to our kiwi environment than others. Mass produced plastics and composites offer affordable options. They may look good when you unpack them, but probably won't last more than a season or two. They are also the least environmentally friendly; destined to add to our mountain of landfill. Timber will last longer, but requires constant maintenance to keep its good looks, weather resistance and longevity. Aluminium is a good option. It is a totally sustainable resource that can be constantly recycled using just 5% of the energy compared to manufacturing new aluminium. 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today! Aluminium is considered a lightweight metal and some mass produced chairs weigh just 4-5kg. However the more aluminium used, the stronger the furniture and longer it will last. In comparison, Oxley’s use a far greater volume of 100% recycled aluminium and their chairs weigh over 10kg. They don’t blow away in the wind! Some manufacturers apply a thin powder

coat finish directly onto bare aluminium but this can allow moisture to get below the finish and for oxidation to begin. Assembling individual components with ferrous nuts and bolts inevitably leads to deterioration.

An investment and timelessly elegant

The solid castings used in Oxley’s furniture are handcrafted, then fully assembled by specialist TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding. They are then shot blasted with recyclable manganese pellets and primed to provide a perfect key prior to applying architectural grade polyester powder coating. This is crucial in attaining a long lasting and thicker coating.

Box of Birds Words Luke Williamson

“They’re designed for birds to live in and that’s why I like to call them bird homes rather than bird houses,” says Nick Charlton, epitomising the charm that exudes from his wood and “terracotta nesting boxes. “They’re just nice things to have in the garden, they look nice. Even people living in apartments can use them.” Nick began working at Morris & James as a consultant about 14 years ago. Morris & James make a lot of their products using an extruder which squeezes out a tube of clay. As a product designer and developer, Nick found himself looking at that tube of clay and considering what other things it could be used for. The clay tube creates its own small flange on one end when it lands on a baseboard. Nick explains, “That flange was exactly the right size to hold the cartridge of my bird homes in place. When it’s hanging on the

wall, the flange prevents the cartridge pulling through and makes it stable once in place.” It also means the cartridge can be taken out and cleaned. Nick buys the terracotta tubes from Morris & James and then builds the cartridges in his studio at home. “It was always intended to be a small business but it’s getting some traction. However, I suppose there is a limit to the number of bird houses the world needs,” he laughs. They are fantastic gifts – attractive, durable, made by a local craftsman and environmentally friendly. Nick encourages owners to send photographs of the bird homes, when they become occupied, and he’ll put them on the website. One of the principles that drives the business is the idea of good old-fashioned craftsmanship combined with some input from technology. When you buy this product,

you know Nick has put time, effort and passion into producing it, and, as he says, “You know there aren’t a gazillion of them. People can imagine the hand of the worker in these objects.” So what’s ahead for Nick? “I’m constantly thinking of things I would like to do next and I have to be disciplined about that or I drift off into time-consuming adventures of discovery.” Those adventures have led Nick to experiment with the texture and shape of the terracotta tubes, and broaden the range of bird homes on offer. He is also experimenting with 3-D printed native bird earrings and, judging by the samples in the studio, they should be popular. Native Bird terracotta nesting boxes are available on Nick’s website, Morris & James and the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui. www.nativebirdnz.com

Encouraging Native Bird Life Photo Scarlett Long

New Zealand is known as the seabird capital of the world and is also home to a number of forest birds that live nowhere else on Earth. There are many reasons why the birds of New Zealand are remarkable and special: many New Zealand birds are also very long-lived, and have slow breeding rates, as well as small clutch sizes and large eggs. Several species are nocturnal, and others have a large body size. All these features have contributed to their extinction or decline. So how can we help them to prosper? Before you start feeding native birds, it is important to make sure your backyard is a safe place for them to visit. Keep predators such as rats, stoats, and possums at bay though trapping, and move tempting bird feed stations well out

of their reach. Provide water, particularly in summer, so birds are able to stay hydrated but be sure to clean your feeder regularly to avoid the spread of disease. Native plants and shrubs are the best way to attract native birds and can provide shelter, food and nesting places in your backyard. Grouping plants in mixed communities with varying heights helps to provide diverse habitats. Aim to grow native trees and shrubs that provide nectar, seeds, or berries, while aiming for a range of native plants so your garden provides food all-year-round. A small garden can still attract birds, especially over winter and spring when tūī, bellbird and kererū will travel considerable distances in search of flowers and fruit. Try to use eco-sourced plants

that naturally occur in your area; native wildlife has coexisted with them for thousands of years and has therefore adapted to use them as a food source. These could include kōwhai, flax, kakabeak, and tarata for nectar; and wineberry, karamū, and korokia for fruit. If you have limited space for big trees, try growing plants in containers, e.g. titoki, broadleaf and cabbage tree. Consider creating a ‘wild’ area that is not disturbed often for birds to use for nesting. Allow leaf litter to accumulate to attract insects for birds to feed on. For a comprehensive list of “who eats what” visit the Department of Conservation (DOC) website. www.doc.govt.nz/get-involved/conservationactivities/attract-birds-to-your-garden

Layering through Colour - Rachael Dewhirst Though originally from Warkworth, artist Rachael Dewhirst spent many years growing up in rural midCanterbury and now has come full circle to be back living and working in Warkworth with her husband. Their love of the water - especially freediving, has provided Rachael with plenty of inspiration. Artist Rachael Dewhirst, is a colourist and expressionist painter mainly working in acrylic, with a preference to paint without inhibition or restriction. “I love the process of painting. Initially I wanted to cram various techniques of painting with colour, shapes and form, but a lot happens by chance, for me the best work is made when I don’t care so much and am fearless, that is not being too precious about the process.”

application techniques, applying paint in impasto and translucent washes. Her intention is to relay the feeling of exhilaration and energy felt in nature through the utilisation of paint. Her works sit somewhere between abstraction and representation. Just as the application of paint to the canvas demonstrates a joy and pleasure in the act of painting, the subjects of Dewhirst’s work are equally characterised by their optimism.

Many of Dewhirst's paintings offer a collagelike aesthetic, reminiscent of Matisse, with the use of masking and layered cut-out shapes. In Dewhirst’s most recent pieces, she takes inspiration from wilder New Zealand landscapes. Mountains, Swanndri and floral motifs are incorporated into her canvases.

Rachael completed her BFA Honours in Fine Arts at Canterbury University and has worked in the collections of the James Wallace Trust, University of Canterbury as well as private collections. Since study, the artist has been involved in designing New Zealand’s longest mural (205m), which was produced with SCAPE Public Art in Christchurch, commissioned by Placemakers Riccarton.

Creating A Paper Oasis Words Leah Botherway

Previously an Osteopath, it is clear that Dionne Wood is just one of these people who are good with their hands. After years of commuting and sitting in traffic, Dionne has spent the last three years creating colourful and intricate floral chandeliers and sculptures made from paper, cardboard, fabric and basically anything else that she can get her hands on.

entirely by accident. Whilst trying to create a dragon wall hanging, she was left with thousands of fabric scales that eventually turned into the petals of hundreds of flowers. Seeing the joy that this gave Dionne, her mother gave her a book on making paper flowers and it is from there that Wild Paper was born.

Having always had a knack for textiles and crafts, Dionne would spend her spare time sewing, quilting, making her children’s clothes and even designed and sewed her own wedding dress.

When not wrangling her small children, Dionne spends countless hours painting and creating paper flora and fauna. She then turns these into beautiful and whimsical chandeliers, lamp shades and sculptures for exhibitions and private commissions.

Like most discoveries in life, Dionne stumbled across her skill for creating paper flowers

She has taken part in a number of exhibitions across the country over the last three years

and her most recent creation is currently being showcased at Artform in Matakana and is even available for purchase. More than 600 hours has gone into making this intricate and colourful masterpiece and once you see the detail and skill involved you will see why. At the moment, Dionne is mixing things up and is adding a new string to her creative bow by building a Christmas Tree made entirely of black wire for an exhibition to be held in the Coromandel next month. If you would like to see more of Dionne’s amazing handiwork or contact her about commissioning her talents, you can find her on Instagram. www.instagram.com/wildpapernz

Harbourside Estate – A Coastal Community Here, in the growing township of Mangawhai resides Harbourside Estate, a successful boutique development of 24 freehold lots. Once the Village’s sports field, the grounds are now more focussed upon relaxation than athletics with a large orangery, kayak launch and sparkling swimming pool for residents to enjoy. That’s not to say they must live a quiet life though with a myriad of water and land activities locally to partake in as they desire. The vibe of tranquillity and care for fellow community members is palpable here. Resident Janice has a campervan and likes the occasional jaunt. Her only restriction to spending more time away is ‘Squeak’ the cat. “Whilst I’m away, my wonderful neighbours ensure that Squeak is well taken care of,” a grateful Janice comments. She hails from a Matakana lifestyle block and her objective to downsize and find a retreat with a view through Pohutukawa to the sea seemed financially out of reach. Then she discovered Harbourside. Now almost two years later, her two cherished Hibiscus trees have grown, a colourful bougainvillea wraps itself around the

pergola and out back an incredible edible garden flourishes. She loves being able to walk a few metres, drop her paddleboard into the estuary and indulge her passion for the water. Fellow residents Steve and Elena’s work took them regularly overseas. They yearned for a lock up and leave with a beachy feel but it wasn’t just about the house for them, they wanted to be part of a special community. When they came upon Harbourside Estate, Elena, with a tear in her eye declared “this is it”. They returned to Poland and the build commenced with interior samples mailed to them for decision making. “We had a design in mind and it was important that it be passive solar,” said Steve. The highly energy efficient and extremely functional contemporary Seville design fit the brief. They arrived to their new build on the eve of level 4 lockdown and found it stocked with food for their self-isolation. They are thrilled with their custom changes and refer to their style as “New Zealand bach meets Euro design”. Temporarily unable to continue their work overseas, they embarked on a creative outlet and now sell relishes,

fresh fish sliders and pickled veges at the vibrant Saturday market, conveniently located adjacent. For those fortunate to live here, it is clear that this unique development is special to them. The opportunity to buy in and share in that fortune exists with two showhomes and two sections available to view now. Should you be interested in an affordable coastal lifestyle, Laureen and Letitia of Bayleys invite you to attend their open homes on Saturdays from 11am until 12pm or feel free to call and book a private viewing. Permaculture – Multiple Functions In Garden and In Life Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

Permaculture is a set of ethics and principles to create a better life and a better world through care for the earth and its inhabitants. One of my favourite principles of permaculture – and one that can be applied to every part of not just your garden but also to your life as a whole – is the one about multiple functions. Basically, before you add anything, make sure it will bring at least three benefits. In the garden, a good place to start is companion planting. Beans and other legumes create their own nitrogen – see it for yourself by lifting an established plant and you’ll find little nodules of nitrogen, like tiny balls, on its roots – so it’s the perfect place to add in some nitrogen-hungry plants like corn. And it’s much better than driving to the shop to pay for plastic-packaged factory-made fertiliser, right? But wait, there’s more: the

corn also works as a stake for your beans to climb up!

There are endless possibilities once you

Another great example is mulching. Mulching the soil simultaneously feeds it, stops it drying out and suppresses weeds. Wellrotted wood mulch is great, it does all those things. But do you know what else is great? Your old newspapers and cardboard boxes! I personally use this all the time, at home and at my flower farm Slow Blooms – just remember to remove any plastic tape.

a shelterbelt? Perhaps make it an edible

New Zealand cardboard is typically sent to India for recycling – quite a wasteful process. So whilst recycling your paper is certainly better than going to landfill, it’s even better to use it to protect your soil, save you water, and feed the worms in your own backyard. No, it’s not the prettiest solution, but you can always cover it with some mulch! That way a little will go a long way.

You can play this game with almost every

Of course it should be pretty - but how cool if it also added value by bringing butterflies, and tasted delicious in a herbal tea. A new puppy? Keep Wellsford Beautiful (KWB) Keep Wellsford Beautiful (KWB) is a community initiative that is focused on environmentalism and creating a platform for like-minded people to form connections within their community. KWB hosts monthly town clean-ups on the third Sunday of each month, with each clean-up starting at 9am behind the Owl Community Hub, in the middle of Wellsford town, and going for one hour. After the clean-up, all who have volunteered to pick up rubbish are invited for a cup of coffee and cakes at CafĂŠ Cozy for a Korero and catch-up. The rubbish collected is then taken to Mahurangi Wastebusters in Snells Beach where recyclables are diverted from landfills, and the total rubbish collected

is weighed. The most rubbish collected at a clean-up event has been 80kg!

Live, Laugh, Love, Tan Tanning has always been a thing. Whether it is lying in the sun for hours, on sun beds, applying fake tan at home or getting a professional spray tan, many people try to attain a sun-kissed glow that they were not born with. Why could that be? Studies have shown that tans make people feel more attractive and look healthier. Cancer statistics in New Zealand are alarming and people are becoming more aware of the negative effects of harmful UV rays. One of the more healthy ways to achieve that sought after 'sun-kissed' look is spray tanning. A professional spray tan solution is applied to the skin by a spray tan technician. The solution contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which reacts with dead skin cells in the skin's surface layer to temporarily darken the skin and simulate

a tan. DHA is derived from glycerin (sugar cane) and the best spray tan solutions are natural, organic, vegan, paraben free and safe to be applied to the skin.

Spray tan technology has come a long way since the days of those fake orange looking tans. An experienced spray tan technician will have a variety of professional solutions and will know exactly which one to use to achieve the most natural looking tan to complement your natural skin tone.

The process of getting a spray tan is relatively simple. Skin preparation and after care is important to guarantee a great tan that lasts and fades evenly. 24 hours prior to your spray tan you shave and exfoliate. The appointment itself takes around 20 minutes, with a quick consultation to determine the best solution to be applied to your skin, depending on your skin tone and how tanned you want to be. The solution is then washed off after a prescribed time but your tan will keep developing for the next 12 hours. After that all you have to do is enjoy your gorgeous glow and moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

If you're thinking about getting a spray tan, Warkworth's newest purpose built spray tan studio, 67 Tans, is the place to go. Owner, Tarin Sheehan, is an experienced spray tan technician who uses premium products and will make sure you achieve a healthy natural glow – because glowing skin is always in! You can follow 67 Tans on Facebook or Instagram @67_tans. 021 123 1322 www.instagram.com/67_tans

White & Shine You may have noticed that the colour of your teeth has gradually

darkened over the years. Teeth darken over time as the foods and

drinks we consume deposit tiny molecules onto the enamel, where

they settle. Teeth whitening offers a simple solution to making teeth look brighter, fresher and more youthful.

Even though teeth whitening options have become more readily available, to achieve the safest and most dynamic results it is

still best to visit trained professionals. Over-the-counter kits are

increasingly popular but can come with the risk of sensitivity, gum

irritation and even tooth damage. When you are looking for the best

whitening treatment, you should always consult dental professionals. From convenient, prescribed home treatments to in-practice

professional whitening, your dentist will have an option for you and be able to tailor a solution for your budget and desired look. The

main difference between take home prescription kits and in-practice whitening is the strength of the product. Professional treatments tend to have higher levels of hydrogen peroxide, so they offer better results than over-the-counter whitening products, which can contain less than 10% hydrogen peroxide. If you just want to nudge that smile up a couple of shades a prescription take-home kit may be a better option. You can brighten your smile gradually and conveniently, with a treatment that fits into your schedule and your budget. Some people have concerns about the effects that bleaching may have on their tooth enamel. Teeth are made up of layers and the enamel is the hardest, outer layer of the teeth and the one that is affected by staining and discoloration. Fortunately, at the concentrations used in cosmetic dentistry, whitening agents have been shown not to damage the enamel, and there is no evidence of softening or stripping of the enamel. Teams of four, aged 18-80 will participate in the Oxfam Trailwalker: walking or running either the 50km or 100km distance through the night to raise vital funds to end the injustices of poverty in the Pacific and around the world. Springboard - A Home for Second Chances Words Carlie Burton-Blanchett

Springboard is a youth organisation based in Snells Beach that offers wrap around support services for at risk youth and their families from Puhoi to Mangawhai. They offer alternate education for NCEA, work readiness programs, youth mentoring, and family support. For young people that are struggling to deal with trauma or who have behavioural challenges, Springboard offers invaluable support to help them believe in themselves and make their way in life. In 2020, Springboard connected with over 240 youth through nine different intensive intervention programmes. They are partnered with the Ministry of Social Development (Ministry of Education and Oranga Tamariki) to provide support to at risk youth in our community. What this looks like on a normal school day is getting up early and going to pick up each and every student. Onsite, you will find people learning boxing, playing guitar, learning to drive, receiving counselling, being mentored,

cutting firewood, gardening and studying for their NCEA Level 1 and 2 qualifications. For many of the youth at Springboard this is the first time they have ever had someone consistently show up for them day after day. And it works, teens from Springboard have become apprentices, got jobs in retail and manufacturing, got married, had their own children and even come full circle back to Springboard as staff. Gary Diprose is the founder and the driving force behind Springboard. I would challenge anyone to sit down with Gary and not come away with enthusiasm for the work Springboard does. Gary grew up farming, but he had a passion to help people. In 2002, an opportunity came up to move to Warkworth and teach kids how to farm with Wrightsons. From this small beginning Springboard was born. 18 years later Gary shows no sign of slowing down or losing his passion for what he does. Springboard now has a large team of passionate full-time staff as well as an

extensive network of mentors and volunteers. Three ways that you can help Springboard: Become a mentor - Springboard Mentoring matches children (8-12 years) who are in need of a positive role model with community members. Become a volunteer - Donate your time and skills to help Springboard. There are so many ways our community can support this amazing work. Drop in for a coffee or give them a call. Make a donation - Over 45% of Springboard's running costs are covered by donations. Springboard’s Fund a Future campaign allows anyone to connect with Springboard and help fund a future for a teen to provide better options. The Warkworth Football Club Words Maddie Long

The Warkworth Football Club was established in the early 1980s, becoming an integral part of the community for those who love a kick around. Run purely by a dedicated team of volunteers and a “football mad” committee who are passionate about getting kids out and playing football, the club has been involved in a range of leagues all over the Auckland region. The winter season starts in late March, ending in early September. The youngest players - ‘First Kicks’ and ‘Fun Football’ teams (4-8 year olds) play at Shoesmith every Saturday morning. Cameron Gray has dedicated much of his time to the Club as President, Junior teams coordinator and Senior teams liaison. He joined the committee after moving to the area eight years ago, having spent his footballing career in Auckland learning from some of New Zealand’s great coaches such as Wynton Rufer and Kevin Fallon. “The Junior teams play home and away games, with Youth teams travelling a bit further for their away games,” he tells us. “Art Waddell is the coordinator for the Junior and Youth teams (9-17 year olds), as well as our football gear aficionado.

He also manages the majority of the Club’s coaches.” The senior teams would normally play all over Auckland and they currently have an Over 35s team and Senior Men’s First Team, who have in recent years won promotion into the Northern Region Football League. “We are hoping to put together another Social Senior Men’s team as well as a Senior Women’s team for next season.” Growing skills is key and the Ricki Herbert Football Academy have set up base at Shoesmith Domain and are in Warkworth once a week throughout the year providing a higher level of training from professional coaches. The clubroom received a much needed makeover with the help of the committee and members, “who I can’t thank enough,” says Cameron. “We are also very grateful to our major sponsors ADP Hydraulics, Ryco and New World Warkworth; without their support, there would not be a Club.” Unfortunately just after this do-up Covid was upon us and as all sports ground to a halt, the Club also took a hit. “It’s been a tough old season. We had a late start due

to the lockdown and this recent round of restrictions in Auckland has now ended our winter season.” “It’s not all doom and gloom though as we have plenty of summer football on Wednesday afternoons and Friday nights at Shoesmith to enjoy,” he tells us. The Club is on a very solid footing at the moment and is posed to grow as the area’s population expands in the sunny north. “We plan to have two certified coaches within the next year or two to be able to focus on developing local football talent and provide pathways for them to transition into senior football and more. We also plan to expand on our ‘Football for All’ program which will provide our community and local schools better access to all levels of football.” The Club is also a part of the hard working crew of the Mahurangi Community Sports and Recreation Collective, who have big plans for sports at the Warkworth Showgrounds. Of Horses and Men It was only a few years ago on Mahurangi West Road where Frans was called to trim the donkey’s hooves. The lady owner was adamant that the vet had to come as well to give it a sedation as she had done for the last three years. Frans talked her out of it as it was an extra cost and that he would find a way around the problem. The first front hoof was very good to do so Frans let his hand slide over the donkey’s back and over his backside slowly going down to the back leg. In no uncertain terms did the donkey tell him that this was not okay, by giving a quick but oh so powerful kick, landing on a solid rail of the pen making a heavy noise. Bones could have been shattered if they happened to be between the hoof and the rail.

Realising that this was bad for anybody's nerves, Frans found himself a stick and gently put it on the donkey’s back moving it over his backside towards the leg. And the donkey kicked, and kicked again when the process was repeated. After ten minutes the donkey gave up and five minutes later the hoof was trimmed. The other back leg was the same and the front one good. The lady was impressed how easy the donkey surrendered to this new routine. On the third visit there was not one kick and the problem donkey turned into a likable friendly donkey. This is just one of the stories in the book that Frans had to write about, along with some of the more memorable things that happened in 25 years of trimming and shoeing horses. There

are the two fat little grey ponies overlooking Pakiri Beach who could barely walk, but were showjumping a year later. A story about a lame bull in Wellsford, a mishap in Mangawhai and drama and joy in Waipu. ‘Of Horses and Men’ is a collection of original true stories about horses, their owners and their farrier. Understand how the love given to a horse by their owner is paramount, be they five years old or a 100 years, and see the essence of this farrier's heart and his never ending quest to make the horses and their owner happy.
