NEW & NOTED JUST LANDED AT BRICK BAY New works from New Zealand's pre-eminent artists have arrived just in time for summer on the sculpture trail. Filipe Tohi’s new seven-metre-long aluminium work ‘The White Cloud’ has literally just landed on the lake, floating effortlessly on water after a high stakes helicopter install. You’ll notice Leon Van den Eijkel’s new work ‘Geometric Totem’ which has become a beacon to guide the way into Brick Bay. Standing over six metres tall and meticulously painted in bold primary colours there’s no chance of missing this modernist masterpiece. Standing graciously in the lush native bush are two unique ceramic works created specifically for Brick Bay by highly acclaimed local artist Virginia Leonard, ‘Red Bed’ and ‘Cream’ are dark and surreal. ‘Phantom Fleet Vessel’ by esteemed New Zealand artist Virginia King joins the collection, sitting elegantly above the water's surface on the Glass House lake. Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, open every day 10am - 5pm www.brickbay.co.nz

BLUE’S BBQ & BAR After working as a private chef in the US, Blue’s owner Lisa Bates wanted to spend some family time back in NZ. Her American husband, Adam Kewenig, grew to love the Mahurangi area and decided the only thing missing was a good southern US style BBQ joint. When the Neville Street restaurant space (former Pizza Co) became available they knew with a little renovation it could again be the fun, casual gathering place people remembered- this time with a slightly American twang! Opening late November. Open 11am-10pm daily. Closed Tuesdays. 18 Neville Street, Warkworth

MANGAWHAI HEADS VOLUNTEER LIFEGUARDS WORDS

With over 1,000 people flocking to their patch of beach at a time during the height of summer, the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguards are kept on their toes. When the club formed in 1963, a borrowed reel, a small group of volunteers and a tin shed was adequate. The reel was subsequently replaced with rescue boats and the tin shed became a modern club house hosting over 150 members. But still that isn’t enough. That’s because Mangawhai and surrounding areas

have experienced huge growth over recent years and, as Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service Inc (MHVLS) veteran and local surfer Tony Baker says: "Pretty much any day there is a wave and the sun is out, the beach is heaving".

guards and over 100 junior surf kids and families ranging from the age of seven – to 80-plus. At 14, members are eligible to train to become active lifeguards and are taught water confidence and other skills.

“We have a really strong surfing community in Mangawhai so, whenever there is a good swell, the beach is usually 70 per cent local surfers. But most of the time it’s a mixture of both locals and visitors on the beach.”

The active lifeguards work an average 2,000 hours per season at Mangawhai Heads, conducting up to 100 rescues, first aids and searches per season and up to six after-hours search and rescues per year. And, although some of the rescues involve locals, Mr Baker says, most

are visitors who get caught out. “A majority of our rescues are boat-related. Generally, boats that have flipped on the Mangawhai Bar or search and rescue call-outs. Most of the “between the flags” incidents are first-aid related. Often we are just helping someone back to shore or moving them back to the safe swimming area on the beach.” Members have also been involved in a number of award-winning rescues, including dramatic search and rescues at sea. “People should never turn their back on the ocean or take its amazing power and energy for granted. A lot of our rescues involve people who are oblivious to the dangers in the sea, often late in the day. We are often fishing people off the rocks because they didn’t know that the tide comes in, and rescuing people who have launched their boat at the boat ramp and headed out for a day’s fishing without checking, and usually not wearing a life jacket. “Other key things to consider are, if they are surfing or paddling with a board, to have a leash, and be aware of other people in the water. Added to this the old ‘slip, slop, slap’, as we deal with many people who are suffering from heat exhaustion.” While most people who’ve been rescued are in shock, they are often a mix of embarrassment and gratitude. However, a challenge surf lifesaving clubs face is the expectation that you will always be there. “The future of surf lifesaving is uncertain due to lack of funding. And, closer to home, the sheer volume of people visiting our beaches hasn’t matched our club’s membership growth. We are constantly trying to recruit new members and trying to secure funding so we can continue to operate and deliver the same services we have since 1963." “We are so lucky to have such an amazing club right on the beach and be able to give back to our local community by providing lifesaving and education services.” www.mhvls.com 021 907066

BECKY WOOD – WARKWORTH’S WORLD CHAMPION WORDS

Running onto the field in the famous black jersey with her Black Ferns sisters, Becky Wood is beaming with confidence and strength. But the road to winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup was long, hard and dirty. Becky grew up in Warkworth and has played sports most of her life – from netball and touch to boxing and javelin – but the 30-year-old only started playing rugby three years ago. She trained as a paramedic and now works as a firefighter at Silverdale Station. Combining

full-time work with getting into the shape-of-alifetime to make the Black Ferns was incredibly challenging. “It was 18 months of going straight from work to training for several hours each night, and games on a Saturday. It didn’t leave a lot of time for much else,” said Becky. “Some nights I would come home after training and go onto the front lawn with my partner and a tackle bag in the dark, trying to get something right; repeating the skill until it became second

nature. It was tiring. There was blood, sweat, injuries, tears, anger and frustration.” The relationship with her partner Tutetangihaere Malcolm was also put to the test. “We'd expected it to be hard, but it was extremely hard at times - I got close to pulling the plug on several occasions. The late nights, commitment to attend every training, getting home tired and grumpy, lack of quality time with each other, it does put a strain on your relationship,” she said.

Women’s rugby stars do not get paid, like their male counterparts. The extraordinary performance by the Black Ferns in the Rugby World Cup, in front of record television audiences, led to a storm of criticism around gender inequality in New Zealand sports. The message has now reached the ears of the new Government, with Sports Minister Grant Robertson leading the charge and asking NZ Rugby to address the issue as a matter of urgency. “I think it's great to see that the process is underway. It's a really exciting time for the women's game and we are all looking forward to seeing what comes of it," said Becky. As a child, Becky went to Warkworth Primary and Mahurangi College. Always keen to give back to her local community, the sports star recently went back to visit her old turf. “It was pretty special being back. I didn’t expect the kids to be so excited - I must have signed 300 posters in the primary school.‘ The young crowd were given a few tips on how to reach their goals. “It may sound a bit silly, but I made an inspiration wall in my room next to my bed, and would look at it every morning when I woke up and every night before I went to sleep. It had a big poster of the Women’s Rugby World Cup, dates, pictures of the Black Ferns, and quotes to motivate me, including ‘do one thing every day that helps you get closer to your goal.’ That way I was constantly reminded to work towards it - not just on my skills and fitness, but also doing my homework on game strategy, techniques and weightlifting progress,” she said. Clearly, Becky’s motivation and pure grit was rewarded, with the once-in-a-lifetime achievement of winning the sport’s greatest prize. “Singing the national anthem in front of a huge crowd, and performing the Haka, is definitely something I will never forget. All the hard work had paid off, and every second had been worth it. We had accomplished what we had set out to do taking the Cup back to New Zealand.”

SLOW WATER TRADING POST

After becoming empty nesters and making the decision to holiday in the USA Sheryl Papprill became hooked. “We purchased a Dodge pickup and popped a camper on the back. We continued to go over every year after that, so in the space of ten years we covered a lot of ground and visited almost every state including some of Canada.

a shop was needed, so her late husband got to create his own Trading Post, modelled on the western towns that they had visited.

Gradually bringing back all sorts of jewellery and bits ‘n’ pieces.”

They continued to travel yearly searching out the unusual: him Western style and her Native American; Sheryl now specialises in Sterling Silver and Turquoise purchased mostly from the Navajo or Zuni silversmiths, who have had their trade passed down from generation to generation.

Then six years ago several locals decided that

Their range covers jewellery, western hats, biker jackets, fringed clothing, bags, boots, Native American artefacts, cushions, t-shirts, blankets, dream catchers, skins, tin signs and Texas longhorns. Mix well with a fork until ganache is smooth. Remove cake from the freezer and pour the ganache over just before you are ready to serve. Use a spoon to spread it evenly and smoothly over the top. Serve with fresh berries. Can be served at room temperature, as it won’t melt unlike other raw cakes. You can use the cake mixture to make chocolate truffles – just roll them into balls and shake cocoa powder over to finish.

HONEST CHOCOLAT WORDS

CARLIE

A delicious creamy chocolate smell with a hint of lemon is wafting down the lane as I approach the front door of Honest Chocolat in Matakana village. Nico and the team have just perfected a new lemon caramel recipe. Nico Bonnaud has always been in the chocolate and pastry business; he started five years of training in La Rochelle, France when he was just fifteen years old. Since then he has worked in fine dining restaurants in France, the UK and the US, as well as The Sugar Club and Little Bird Unbakery here in New Zealand. The shop’s interior, designed by Nico’s wife Emily,

The chocolates are the star of the show here, rows of bonbons shimmer like tiny jewelled paintings. They are unique as they are made from a ganache without cream or butter. This results in a very clean tasting chocolate with subtle, aromatic flavours. Nico explains, “everything I do is to help the chocolate shine. With single origin quality chocolate, the art is in showcasing the original chocolate flavour and complementing it.”

Everything is made on site and you can watch Nico and his team at work on their confectionary creations. Preparations are underway for Christmas. While you are there try their delicious in-house six spice hot chocolate, it will warm your heart and satisfy even the most ardent chocolate lover’s desires.

The Parade this year will start earlier at 11 am instead of 1pm and now all the floats will stop in the main street for the judging and so spectators get a chance to see the floats up close.

The theme for this year’s Santa Parade is “Kiwi Summer”: this doesn’t mean that Santa will be in his speedos! He will still be in his normal outfit but look for the Kiwi Summer themed floats.

This year also we will have some entertainment

Murray hopes that Queen Street retailers stay

open and get into the spirit where possible, as spectators will stay in the main street rather than down in Baxter Street as in previous years. It is a great opportunity to also get some Christmas shopping done and remember that Santa loves those who buy local! SWEDISH CHRISTMAS IN KIWI CLASSIC WORDS REBECKA

BJELFVENSTAM

Christmas is coming to this heritage villa with a remarkable history. Built over a century ago, by Sir Edmund Hillary’s grandmother, it was relocated to Warkworth in early 2014 under a storm of controversy. Nowadays its guardians are the Sandström family: writer Vanessa and Swedish economist Claes with their children Oscar, Jesper and Millie, and dog Sparky. “We fell for the pressed tin ceilings. And the potential,” said Claes. “It hadn’t been hacked into or modernised, so all period features were intact. At the same time, it had a practical floor plan for a big family, and lots of space for all the treasures we’ve collected over the years.”

LOUISE

“I’ve always been obsessed with old villas, but I never thought we would live in a home with such rich history to it,” said Vanessa. “So many people have walked through here – it was the heart of the Hillary family for many years and carries so many stories.” The relocation of the house to Warkworth is a story in itself. “Let’s just say it was an ordeal for everybody,” she said. “The neighbours, understandably, didn’t want to see it go, and we had invested everything we had in our dream. It was a major production and it all got a bit heated, with police being called to keep back protestors.”

M

PHOTOGRAPHY

“I can totally see where they’re coming from historic buildings are not celebrated enough in New Zealand and we’re all for keeping the history alive. But this house was going regardless, the developer could have chosen to simply demolish it, so surely it’s better off going somewhere beautiful and to a family who will love and honour its integrity?” “As a good friend put it at the time: It’s only fitting that a house with strong ties to Sir Edmund Hillary goes on an expedition of its own.” Claes and Vanessa say the villa has a different feel now it’s settled into its new site. By carefully opening up some of the inside walls, and with a

north-facing position, the sky can be seen from every room. “It’s almost as if cutting it in half and moving it shook out the old dust and cobwebs,” said Vanessa. The couple describe their style as eclectic, slightly gothic, down-at-heel grand, but at the same time fun. “Our style reminds me of the old, traditional homes in northern Sweden,” said Claes. “It’s not just the authentic furniture, but the details, like the Höganäs pottery and the way we set a table with wild flowers and tea lights. And of course, the Christmas decorations, with the traditional advent candle holders that light up every Swedish home throughout December.” Claes and Vanessa are unabashed foodies, with Claes making creative use of the pizza oven to bake sourdough bread and smoke meat. For Christmas, he bakes traditional Swedish saffron buns.

The couple met in Wellington back in the late 90s, and their style has been shaped by the places they have lived together since: from London to Stockholm and Zanzibar. “The fact that we have a limited budget means we have to think creatively and can’t rush into things. We never buy new – everything from furniture to windows are reused, and when the roof had to be replaced we made an outdoor dining table from the old Kauri beams.” “Sometimes it’s not what you pay the most for that brings you the most joy. We probably love the brass overflow in the original bathtub more than the new kitchen!” they said. “Our biggest challenge has definitely been doing so much by ourselves. There’s been a neverending list of things to get done, every weekend throughout the past three years. But it’s been worth it - every part of the house has got something of us in it. It’s home, and we love it.”

MASTER CRAFTSMEN

SHOREDITCH WORDS

After 12 years refining his craft in Shoreditch, East London, Kasey Coory felt it was time for a change of scene. In 2013, Kasey and fellow craftsman Evan Schwarz relocated their respective families to New Zealand, opening the first Shoreditch workshop on Waiheke Island. “I went to London with a backpack, and came back with three kids and a 20ft container full of tools,” laughed Kasey. Kasey recently opened a new Shoreditch workshop in Warkworth, bringing his wealth of experience: from designing bespoke furniture and kitchens, to fitting out boutique London stores, even managing construction of entire film sets.

REUBEN

KEELING

No matter the scale of the project, Kasey and Evan apply the same working principles: quality products, built to last for future generations, with great attention to detail. They believe furniture should be made to give away, not throw away when it breaks. Shoreditch use sustainable solid woods, plywoods and reclaimed materials, trying to minimize waste wherever possible. “The stuff we build will last a lifetime - we're trying to make a difference and have less of an impact on the planet,” said Kasey. In August, Shoreditch built a custom kitchen, along with bathroom and bedroom cabinetry, for a Waiheke Island home that went on to win NZ

House of the Year 2017. “It was a cool project, but a bit of a challenge, because what the original architects had drawn up for the kitchen was impossible to build. We ended up redesigning the whole thing.” Kasey hopes the local community will embrace Shoreditch furniture. “Furniture is quite tactile, you have to touch it and see it in person to really appreciate how well it's made,” he said. “It's like art - you're going to be seeing it in your house every day so you want something beautiful, something to admire.” www.shoreditch.co.nz www.facebook.com/Shoreditch.nz

LIVING WITH HERBS As the weather warms and we celebrate with outdoor BBQ’s, herbs come into their own. Basil, a summer based herb, is at its best when used fresh, scattering whole or roughly torn leaves over sliced mozzarella, tomatoes and drizzled with olive oil, for a classic Caprese salad. Pound in a mortar and pestle or food processer with garlic, pine nuts, parmesan and olive oil for a fresh pesto. Chop and beat into softened butter, then melt and put over steaks, roast chicken or crushed boiled new potatoes. It is great planting companion with tomatoes, as basil will repel insects from your plants. We tend to think of Rosemary as a winter herb. It is one of the most commonly used herbs all year round and not just with roast lamb; it works equally well with fish, shellfish, veal and chicken dishes cooked with wine and garlic. Place a sprig inside poultry, or insert some needles into your leg of lamb or use it in meat marinades. Burn several sprigs on your barbecue grill to impart the flavour on the cooking meats. Most herbs have edible flowers and what better way to use them than in a cool refreshing drink with mint and lemon, or in herbal or fruit teas. Freeze edible flowers into ice cube trays or make ice blocks. Add a selection of colourful edible flowers to your next salad or sprinkle over pasta dishes. Supplied by Tumbleweed Coastal Plants, Matakana.

Operating since 2000, husband and wife team John Davies and Wendy Schick of Tumbleweed Coastal Plants offers a wealth of plant knowledge. HULA FITNESS

BODY TALK

Kelli-Asta started Hula Fitness in the Kaipara Areas Kaiwaka and Ruawai. She was taught the Hula by her Cook Island friends and family at her local Church C3Rockingham, in Perth.

Most people today are concerned about their health. Or they need to make changes in their life but somehow it just doesn’t happen. Many have tried a variety of things to “fix” an issue but it hasn’t worked so are now turning to “information medicine” or BodyTalk to create an environment where their body recognises and acts to bring the body/mind into balance.

I first visited Linda for Body Talk sessions, I was curious if a little sceptical but I soon realised the value and the benefits they provided. Body Talk revealed the underlying and often longstanding issues that were causing challenges. The sessions have made a measurable difference to my life and my health without the need for drugs or medical procedures.”

Linda Shaw, Certified BodyTalk Practitioner and President of the NZ BodyTalk Assn has recently moved to Warkworth and has her clinic at Lavender House, 27 Lilburn St.

As the body is balanced, it starts healing itself. BodyTalk is very effective in dealing with anxiety, headaches and migraines, stress and shock symptoms, back and joint pain, eczema, digestive disorders, chronic fatigue, and physical or emotional trauma. It is very useful in cases where there is no clear diagnosis of symptoms.

“When my family returned to NZ I missed that fun family culture of what The Polynesian Dance brought. My passion from the start was to put Hula Fitness out there to see if there was any interest, I received a phenomenal amount of responses from many women around Kaiwaka and other parts of the Kaipara area." Her goal is to provide a fun place to learn Hula Fitness at a very low cost of a gold coin donation. “I want all women to be able to have access to fun Fitness without worrying about the cost and getting a babysitter, as mums with babies and toddlers are welcome.” “Hula has so many great and positive benefits for the body like flexibility, upper and lower muscle toning and strengthening. It’s a fun way to lose inches around the hips and stomach areas and it’s something new and different to other exercise and fitness programmes." www.kaiwakasport.co.nz

Reconnecting the lines of communication between cells and systems, enables the body's mechanisms to function as they are designed to do, preventing disease and rapidly accelerating the healing process. In this way, the body’s innate ability to balance and heal itself gets a chance to work – from releasing stress and anxiety to boosting the immune system; to being able to navigate a distressing life trauma or recover from injury or surgery more quickly. SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKINCARE REGIME

ZERO WASTE CHRISTMAS

BY SARAH SIMPSON, BEAUTY EDITOR

We generally throw away 30% more rubbish over the summer holidays (50,000 tonnes of extra waste) and almost double rubbish to landfill the week after Christmas.

A new season calls for a new skincare regime, and for the warmer months, it's all about a lighter lotion and a higher SPF. Here are a couple of ideas to update your beauty wardrobe in time for the sunshine. In winter our skin screams for a heavy-duty cream that offers a thicker consistency to combat dry, dehydrated skin. Spring and summer, however, call for a lighter lotion that provides benefits but doesn't overload and clog your skin. Consider switching up your moisturiser to something that offers your skin protection from the sun as well as environmental pollution, but with a lighter feel. Choosing one

that contains Vitamin A is also wise as our skin’s Vitamin A is depleted every time you walk into the sun. While sun protection is an essential all-yearround, summer certainly requires bringing in the big guns when it comes to warding off the harmful UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays. Adding one like this to your regime offers an SPF50 protection thanks to the non-nano Zinc Oxide shield while also bursting with antioxidants and a formulation that boasts an impressive natural ingredient line up that is 70 percent organic. COOLA Mineral Sport SPF50 Tinted Stick, $45 Environ Skin EssentiA AVST Moisturiser1, $81

Say “no” to single use packaging wherever possible and think about what will happen to items at the end of their life? Tips to reduce items to landfill: • Use reusable Christmas bags. They look great, save time, less mess and last for years • Carry reusable shopping bags, coffee cups, utensils, drink bottles and always say “no” to straws! • Support locally made products, art, craft and produce • Donate to OP shops, free stalls or charities rather than to landfill

MEATS & EATS

WARKWORTH BUTCHERY

MATAKANA SMOKEHOUSE

Take Christmas outside with this beautiful sweet and sticky BBQ Christmas ham recipe.

This Hot Smoked Salmon Mezze Style Platter is a super quick and easy way to feed the whanau this silly season. You need a side of Hot Smoked Salmon but everything else is totally up to you! It’s great to use seasonal produce, experiment with fermented vegetables or just use up what’s in the fridge.

Start with one of our free-range hams, smoked and cured at the Butchery for a richer flavour. Remove skin leaving the fat. Score the fat then brush over with spiced apricot sauce. Place in baking tray and pour two cups of water around the ham. Combine 500g dried fruit, 3 diced pears, half a chopped pineapple, 500g of lychees in syrup, 2 tbsp mustard, ½ cup brown sugar, ¾ cup white wine, ½ cup white wine vinegar and 2 tsp mustard powder. Mix well with a cup of water. Heat your BBQ to 200 degrees then cook ham, covered, in tray for 1 hour. Add fruit mix and cook for another 45 mins. Slice and serve.

Use a large platter or chopping board, place salmon in centre, build everything around, sprinkle greens on top and enjoy with a glass of Jones Road Cider or bubbles. Suggestions to accompany: radish, red onion, edamame beans, roasted or fresh asparagus, cucumber, gherkins, capers, microgreens, sauerkraut, olives, roasted capsicum, hard boiled eggs, whipped cream cheese, goats cheese with fresh dill, crackers, sliced pumpernickel or sliced sourdough baguette.

MAHURANGI OYSTERS

MATAKANA VILLAGE BUTCHERY

Oysters Rockefeller is a summer classic. Simple to serve on the BBQ. Serve with icy cold beer or bubbles. Delicious.

The ever popular butterflied lamb leg is a big seller at Matakana Butchery.

¼ cup parsley, ¼ cup chives, ¼ cup chervil, 2 tbsp tarragon leaves, ¼ cup celery yellow inner leaves, 200gm butter, 50gm parmesan, 1 cup bread crumbs, 2 tbsp Pernod, 8 drops Tabasco, 2kg rock salt, 4 dozen Mahurangi Oysters freshly shucked in shells. Chop herbs and celery leaves finely. Place in bowl, add softened butter, grated parmesan, breadcrumbs, Pernod and Tabasco. Rub together. Pour ½ rock salt into shallow-sided dish. Gently place oysters in the shell in the salt. Top each oyster with a generous portion of the Rockefeller topping. Place oysters on bbq or under a grill until golden and the sides of the oyster begin to curl slightly. Serve the oysters in a dish on the remaining rock salt. Leave them to cool for a couple of minutes. Buy online from our website. www.mahurangioysters.co.nz 09 425 5652 | info@mahurangioysters.co.nz

42

Butterflied lamb leg is easy to prepare and cook. It is ideal on the BBQ where it can be nicely browned and crusty on the outside and pink and juicy in the middle. Season to taste with your favourite herbs and spices (our favourite being rosemary, honey and garlic) then barbecue the lamb over steady, medium heat, turning it every five minutes or so, basting if you wish. A small piece of lamb may need 20 to 25 minutes, a larger, thicker piece, up to 30 or 35 minutes. Do not overcook, and remember to allow plenty of resting time before carving. Come in store and pick up your seasoned or plain butterflied lamb leg today and don’t be shy to ask for one cut to your needs! 66 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana 09 422 7012 | www.matakanabutchery.co.nz

PAPA'S KITCHEN WORDS

Papa’s Kitchen in Wellsford is on a mission. Initially started by Wellsford Christian Fellowship as a food bank, members of the church, Brian and Val Jarvis, took it over eight years ago and have worked to expand Papa’s Kitchen into a community-wide staple. They invite everyone in the community to come and enjoy a home-cooked meal on Monday evening. “You don’t have to have a need. You can come to just socialise,” says Val. The meals are prepared by Val, Brian and a team of volunteers but created from the generosity of the community. Local farmers, shopkeepers and

churches all donate regularly to Papa’s Kitchen. In addition, Val watches the specials at the market to find the best deals so she can to help create healthy and nutritious meals. Various performers and groups pop in from time to time, performing for the audience. Most recently, 3D, a singing and dancing group from Tonga performed. Val and Brian make sure that nothing goes to waste and all leftovers are distributed throughout the community. “We have a very good grapevine,” says Brian, and volunteers try to identify others in need that can benefit from the leftovers.

Papa’s Kitchen is open to everyone in the community, free of charge, at the old train station on Station Road in Wellsford. Dinner is served Mondays at 5:30 p.m., except during school and public holidays. Donations and volunteers are always welcome. You can contact Wellsford Christian Fellowship or Brian and Val Jarvis, personally. www.cfw.org.nz/papa-s-kitchen 09 423 9006

many, but he’s also been a carver since the 1990s. The young photographer's competition is big for Deon. “We have to get younger generations to see the world around them, and to be inspired by its beauty. These kids need to stop taking selfies and turn the camera around on the natural world!” Deon has been best mates for years with Warren Maxwell, lead singer of Trinity Roots (also ex-Fat Freddy’s Drop, and frontman of Little Bushman). Deon was much inspired by him in their teenage years, and his daughter Triniti is named after the band. Warren will be on the judging panel for the sculpture and photography, along with Dr Richard Cooper from Elam School of Fine Arts. Warren said, “We’re really proud to support the local area and these different artforms. ‘He toi whakairo, he mana tangata – where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity.’” www.facebook.com/labrattanetanafest

BOOK REVIEW

CLASSIC PLANES BY IVOR WILKINS New Zealand has long held a passion for its aviation history - the bravado, ingenuity and trailblazing spirit says a lot about who we are. Classic Planes celebrates that legacy, from the first fledgling beginnings to the present day. Author Ivor Wilkins traces the story of planes in New Zealand, beginning with the exploits of Richard Pearse and shining a light on other local pioneers, Jean Batten and Tim Wallis among them. He celebrates those who lovingly restore planes in the modern day, and revels in our ongoing love affair with winged wonders.

THE MATAKANA SUNDAY DRIVE Many will recognise half of the stores on the Matakana Sunday Drive as the popular Collectables Trail, which has been enticing keen shoppers to the Matakana Coast since 2012. A bit of a shuffle and some exciting new additions has inspired a re-brand to The Matakana Sunday Drive; being synonymous with a casual retail meander of eight unique independent stores and a cookies and icecream canteen from Warkworth to Omaha. The Matakana Sunday Drive has everything for everyone; getting away from the busy malls and supporting a group of inspiring independent stores. New on the block from Raglan is WRW + Co. Furniture – Will hand crafts furniture for any space and Bernie and Marie can offer you years of carefully sourced collectables at Quail Farm. Mooi Mooi has expanded and added newly sourced and unique homewares to the area, and what was once Rummage has transformed into something more delicious offering cookies, gelato, coffee, smoothies and shakes in their amazing new space or on the go. Trio has jumped on board with their hand poured soy candles and gifts and Old School Inc. has more original industrial pieces and gifts to bring soul to your home. Continuing their passion for quality antiques and vintage collectables are Margie’s Red Barn and Annie’s Vintage. All within minutes of each other, these rural home-based businesses specialise in both new and old collectables, retro and vintage objects, industrial, upcycled and recycled pieces as well as antiques, art, designer furniture and homewares. Slightly off the beaten track, every store along the drive has their own unique flavour – so get out with the family, a group of friends or a solo mission and travel at your own pace to find some tantalizing treasures and eats along the way. www.sundaydrive.co.nz

INTERVIEW: BRYAN ADAMS WORDS

REUBEN

KEELING

Welcome back! Do you have any fond memories from your last tour in 2013? BA: NZ reminds me a lot British Columbia, where I spent a lot of time, so it was easy being there from that perspective, but mostly because the gigs went really well. This run will be longer to get NZ in first. You're releasing a new best-of album called Ultimate, with 19 hits and two new tracks. What inspired the new tracks? BA: The title track “Ultimate Love” is inspired by the flurry of provocative tweets that are emanating from the USA. The other song “Please Stay” comes from the writing sessions for the musical “Pretty Woman” which I’ve been on for the past two years. You've been performing some of these songs for 30+ years, do you ever get tired of playing your hits? BA: Not at all, and what is funny about them is some of the songs weren’t worldwide hits at the time of release. Take “summer of 69” for example, it never even charted in the UK top 40 yet everyone in the pub knows how to sing it. You're also an activist for human and animal rights. In the early 90s you campaigned hard for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, which protects whales around Antarctica and New Zealand. Have you been championing any other causes lately? BA: I’m still actively pushing for whaling to be stopped. NEIL AND LIAM FINN ON TOUR As everybody should know by now, Finns were bred for touring and music, and this summer Liam and Neil will be happily piling into the van for some back-road wandering. With a hot band of family and good friends attached, they will perform in the small halls of Aotearoa throughout January, exploring the lesser-known treasures of the motherland. Neil and Liam, together with Sharon and Elroy Finn, Connan Mockasin, champion whistler Molly Lewis, John Carroll Kirby, Jimmy Metherell and songbird Eliza-Jane Barnes will play their hearts out for the locals and a few city blow-ins. It’s bound to be a welcome diversion, and a uniquely intimate look at the way the Finns roll, as they debut music from their upcoming collaborative album, as well as throwing in some of their favourite songs from the family canon.

CELEBRATE. EAT. DRINK. DANCE. A huge thank you to our community for all your support this year. Celebrate Christmas with us on Sunday 17 December from 5pm in the Smoko Room. Live music, taco’s, and drink specials (bubbles and beer). We are open 7 days a week from the 4 December Sawmill Brewery + Smoko Room www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz

“Both Dad and I spent our careers with the ambition to make it outside of NZ… putting a lot of time and energy into the rest of the world and sometimes overlooking what’s right in front of us, and why we pursue this vocation. This tour is about making memories - getting to do what we love, on an intimate level with good friends and family for the pure joy of it, and building a unique experience - hopefully for not just us but whoever wants to come along” said Liam. In lieu of the regular NZ tour circuit, the Finn's vision has been brought to life by DIY champion, A Low Hum. 4 January Warkworth Hall, Warkworth 5 January Coronation Hall, Waipu 6 January Kaiwaka Memorial Hall, Kaiwaka Tickets $55 (plus booking fee) will be on sale from 10 November www.neilandliamfinn.com
