NEW THREADS FROM NINE72

THE GREAT SUMMER ART EXHIBITION

Nine72 is a new local clothing label created and run by entrepreneurial young couple Lewis Harris and Emma Marwick.

The Mahurangi East Tennis Club is proud to host The Great Summer Art Exhibition for the 28 consecutive year. This year exhibits include artworks from Mahurangi East College students. A preview evening with prize giving will be held on Thursday 30 December, at 7pm. Entry is $10 per person (ticket sales available at the door or collect from Bayleys Warkworth). Refreshments will be served. Prizes in all categories (except People’s Choice) will be presented.

These teenagers were not content to sit still during lockdown, and their need to stay busy led them to create a clothing brand. Lewis and Emma wanted to create a brand name that resonated for them personally, and the name Nine72 is inspired by the Pakiri postcode. Pakiri has special significance to them as it’s where Lewis’ whanau is from, dating back to 1830. www.facebook.com/nine72 | www.instagram.com/nine72_

The exhibition opens to the public on Friday 31 December and runs until Sunday 2 January 2022, daily from 10am-4pm. Admission by donation. People’s Choice Award will be announced on the afternoon of the final day. Mahurangi East Community Hall (next to Library), Hamatana Road, Snells Beach www.mahutennis.co.nz/art-expo

MAC SUMMER DAYS This summer, as the long, hot days melt into balmy evenings and you’re ready for some dancing, search Spotify for Leigh resident, Mac Summer – his latest drum and bass track, Web of Life, will have you grooving in no time. Words Luke Williamson

Some of you might know Mac as the sound engineer at Leigh Sawmill Café; the reason gigs at the Sawmill sound so good is because Mac knows his stuff. Pop over to discogs.com and type in his real name, Malcolm Welsford, and you’ll see he’s worked with a who’s who of New Zealand artists for the last 25 years, plus an American star you might know – Adam Lambert. Mac was born in Auckland, grew up in Tauranga and moved to Wellington in his early 20s to start a career in music. "I worked in a small studio and focussed on teaching

myself to record and produce. I got involved with a lot of reggae bands and I learned so much – that’s sort of where my drum and bass influence comes from." With a strong skill set on board, Mac returned to Auckland and started his own recording studio. "I built York Street Studios and was part-owner with Jaz Coleman. We recorded a ton of music – Supergroove, The Feelers, the Finns, pretty much everyone in the industry at that time. When I sold that in 2000, I moved to Karekare to help record Together Alone for Crowded House."

The bright lights were calling, so Mac moved to Los Angeles where he continued his education in recording and sound engineering. He also branched out into recording his own music and developing other artists. "My first one was Adam Lambert, who is now with Queen. American Idol tried to steal the rights from me, but I survived a lawsuit over that." While in Los Angeles, Mac also got to meet a hero of his – Bruce Swedien. "He’s famous for his work with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, and I actually got to work with him.

He was very impressive and I learned so much from him." In 2012, Mac began to feel home-sick and returned to New Zealand. "Working at the Leigh Sawmill was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with the music industry back here, and I miss it now it’s closed for lockdown. I got to work with all the local bands and that was heaps of fun."

Mac Summer. I also want to do some gigs in Brazil because I’ve had such a good response there. But I’ll always be based in New Zealand. That’s home for me." Check out Mac Summer on Spotify. www.macsummermusic.com

While he still has ongoing work for clients in America, his primary focus now is making music as Mac Summer. "Web of Life is going really well in places like France and Spain, and particularly Brazil – you just don’t know where the interest is going to come from. For my first single, Hands in Our Tills, I got a lot of interest from Russia because it made it onto the iTunes chart there! It’s crazy!" While Mac would love to be out touring his music this summer, Covid has meant live music is in a holding pattern for now. "I’m just focussing on the next few songs and getting those out to the world. I’m looking to release a new track every three months over the next year." Depending on travel restrictions, Mac is also hoping to get back to America. "I want to go back for 4-5 months and do some touring as

BUILT TO WORK, MADE TO LAST Founded by Ross Stewart in the small rural community on the northland border, Kaiwaka Clothing has been a household name in the farming and agricultural community for nearly half a century. Words Leah Botherway

Back in 1975, Ross Stewart purchased his first sewing machine with a vision of establishing a business that would support the local economy. Little did he know, this humble sewing machine would be the beginning of a brand that would become one of the country’s leading suppliers of highperformance wet weather gear. Ross initially relied on the local freezing works for the majority of his business, providing them with butcher’s aprons and food grade PVC parkas, bibs and overtrousers. However, coming from a long line of farmers, it was only a matter of time before the business changed direction, and in 1985, they started creating weathertight clothing for the local agricultural industry. Over the years, they have branched out from their farming roots and now sell a range of weathertight items made up of over 100 lines of ‘best in field’ gear. They design clothing for men, women and children and their

garments are now staples not only in farms and orchards but also commercial fishing boats and construction sites. ‘Kaiwaka Clothing’ has become a name that is now synonymous with quality – all items are carefully engineered, designed and crafted using only the best of the materials and then tried and tested in our own backyard. Working with a trusted network of professional and recreational customers who are more than happy to test out the garments, Kaiwaka Clothing does everything to ensure that what they are producing is fit for purpose. Their best-selling Stormforce range is their most popular yet. Designed and crafted using their market-disrupting, twin-skin technology, Stormforce garments have a double layer of wind and rain protection, ensuring that the wearer is kept warm and dry when out in the elements.

Now with Ross’s grandchildren at the helm, Kaiwaka Clothing continues to stay true to those original values of supporting local. To this day, they remain committed to manufacturing their products in New Zealand and are one of the largest employers in the wider area, with a team of over 80 dedicated staff working at their Kaiwaka site. As they continue to grow and solidify their name on the international market, their core value of producing sustainable and ethical clothing has become increasingly important. There are so many elements that can contribute to the impact products have on the environment, such as how and where the products are manufactured and produced, where the materials are sourced from, and ultimately the product’s longevity. An example of their dedication to their quest for sustainability, all of their garments come with a lifetime guarantee and an

As the business is passed down through generations, Kaiwaka Clothing’s passion and dedication to the New Zealand agricultural industry grows stronger. A VERY CITRUS CHRISTMAS For years, the scent of oranges on Christmas morning meant that you were in for a wonderful treat. Drying citrus is an easy, fun and creative way that we can keep this tradition alive so that the sweet fragrance of citrus can still be associated with Christmas to this day. Once dried, the slices can be sewn onto wreaths, garlands, tree decorations or simply enjoyed as a cocktail garnish or healthy snack. HOW TO DRY CITRUS • Preheat your oven to 170-200 degrees.

• Cut the slices as thin as possible, width-wise, starting from the bottom of the orange to the stem. • Dab the slices with a paper towel gently to absorb as much moisture as possible. • Place the slices on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

• Bake for 4 hours, turn the slices over and then bake them for another 2 hours. You’ll know that they’re ready when they don’t bend when you pick them up – the orange slices should be crisp and firm when shaken. • Rest the slices on a drying rack overnight and store them in a cool, dry place.

Whether you’re looking to sew the slices into a wreath or submerge them in a cold gin and tonic, they should last through the summer if dehydrated properly. TIP: Different citruses will give you different shades of colour, from light orange for lemons to dark burgundy from blood oranges; seedless is best. SWEET DRIED ORANGE TREATS Simply by adding a little bit of sugar and spices, the humble orange is transformed into a delicious sweet treat when dried. • 2 large blood or navel oranges

• ¼ cup coconut or granulated sugar • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • Pinch of ground ginger

Using the same drying technique above, mix the sugar and spices in a bowl and sprinkle over the orange slices before placing them in the oven. If you really want to step it up a notch, we suggest dipping the sweetened orange slices in some melted dark chocolate and refrigerate before eating. Go on, it’s Christmas after all! GREENER GIFT GIVING Christmas is the one time of year where feelings of joy and delight can interchangeably mingle with feelings of overwhelm and guilt. Words Sarah Bray - Sustainable Kaipara

The 2021 festive season is upon us, and I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that each purchasing decision comes with a thick layer of analysis and guilt about what we should be purchasing or creating and how to source things responsibly. Here at Sustainable Kaipara, we’re all about inspiring change and encouraging our communities to make positive choices in what they buy and where they buy it. We know that even small changes can significantly impact

the waste we produce and the environmental impact our purchasing can have. So this year, we are sharing some lovely ideas on our blog to help with gift-giving and gift wrapping. Handmade gifts are likely to be low or zero waste and can be made efficiently in a batch over a morning or afternoon. Homemade gifts show thoughtfulness and love - whether it’s baking cookies, making beeswax wraps, or potting up a bloom in a hand-painted pot or second-hand pot.

Wrapping our gifts helps make them special, but most wrapping paper is single-use and not recyclable. It’s super simple to make gift boxes with high-quality newspapers or magazines (such as Junction). There are easy tutorials online to make any size gift boxes or bags. Furoshiki is the art of Japanese fabric wrapping. Use offcuts from some fabric or a funky scarf from a second-hand shop. Wrap the gift in the material and tie it off at the

top - easy! But if you need extra help, look up Furoshiki online, and you will find plenty of tutorials. Paper shopping bags are not only easily reusable but also recyclable once done. For a yesteryears parcel look, use brown string around the gift, then forage on the day for a few sprigs of lavender or rosemary (or any foliage) for added rustic charm. It can be challenging when buying for kids, and it’s taken a while to really ingrain in myself (and I’m still working on the rest of my family) that kids don’t need a heap of (often plastic) toys to experience the joy and magic of the festive season. A couple of carefully selected gifts that are built to last or some handmade gifts are absolutely enough. In saying this, I genuinely believe that the best gift you can give children on Christmas Day is time - playing with them,

following their lead and getting right in the zone with them. So before you head into a tailspin about gift choices, take a breath and consider whether you can squeeze in a few hours to make some gifts, wrap things in a less wasteful way or choose quality products that will last. www.facebook.com/sustainablekaipara www.sustainablekaipara.org

REGENERATE YOURSELF THE SPIRIT OF ISLAND LIFE Words Luke Williamson

The first gin Andi Ross distilled was in a two-litre pot in 12-volt bach on Great Barrier Island. "I’d been interested in distilling gin for some time when I started in 2016, but it took a while to get things right. Once I added honey from here on the island, I knew I was onto something worth pursuing." Being off-grid, adhering to a sustainable ethos and using as many local ingredients as possible all combine to help Island Gin find a successful niche in a crowded market. "We have a great relationship with a local farmer from whom we get our honey," says Andi. "We get a mixture of mānuka and bush honey and it’s a key ingredient in most of our gins. It has a really lovely taste profile."

usually uses vodka and chocolate bitters. So I decided to put the chocolate into the gin and make a Medlands Mule. It’s delicious!" Island Gin also offers Andi’s Original Recipe and Navy Strength for people who like to drink gin neat on the rocks. The Navy Strength and Tangelo gins both won awards at the 2021 International Wine & Spirit Competition in London. The kina-themed bottle adds to the appeal of the product. "I didn’t want to source a bottle from overseas," says Andi, "so it was very exciting to get it made locally by Visy Glass – they’ve been so supportive." Running this business on Great Barrier Island

means it’s all about logistics for Andi – "trying to get materials and products on and off barges and planes, and planning to have back-ups for all the things I need so I don’t get caught out. But it’s a beautiful place to live and work." While Andi is happy to grow at her own pace, the aim is to establish a classic, long-term brand. "We’ll stick to the core of what we do, but I’ll keep experimenting. I was recently offered some Seville oranges so I’m excited to have that gin in the tank at the moment." Go to the Island Gin website for sales, cocktail recipes and seasonal specials. www.islandgin.com

Juniper berries have to come from Europe, as they can’t be grown in New Zealand, but the other ingredients in Island Gin are all local – rainwater which has been triple-, carbon- and UV-filtered, coriander, honey, tarragon and some other secret ingredients. Andi says, "I’m continuing to experiment with the botanicals available here on the island so we keep our flavour profile unique. My palate runs towards the citrus and floral end of the spectrum, but I am experimenting with a more “savoury” style of gin, more of a martini gin. Very dry." Seasonal gins are an important part of the Island Gin stable and this season’s tangelo gin sold out in 24 hours. "The tangelos come from the same farmer who supplies my honey and when they’re ready, I have them peeled and in the spirit within a couple of hours of coming off the tree." Other seasonal offerings include coffee gin and chocolate gin. Andi tells me, "I wanted to do a variation on a Moscow Mule, which

THE WINDING ROAD TO A UNIQUE NEW CAFE Ban Aldin of Ollie’s Café and Grocer left her engineering job in Auckland to bring Middle Eastern cuisine to the heart of Maungatoro.

It's been a long time coming, and it hasn't been easy, but Ollie's Café and Grocer in Maungatoroto is now open for business. Originally scheduled to open in mid-August 2021, this date was pushed back due to the latest level 4 lockdown. Ban recalls her journey leading up to opening day and shares her hopes and dreams for Ollie’s. Originally from Iraq, Ban moved to New Zealand in October 1995 where she met her husband Guy (originally from England). After many years living in Auckland, where they raised their two daughters, the couple

decided to move to Maungatoroto to enjoy the fresh air, lifestyle, and be closer to their other business, Olives On Porter. Located in Paparoa, the Olive Grove is where they grow and produce their Gold Award Extra Virgin Olive Oil and other olive products. Ban enjoyed her career as an engineer and travelled the world, but something was missing. Over time this feeling evolved into a dream of one day opening a café. Ban finally placed the "open" sign outside

Ollie's Café and Grocer, in Maungatoroto's Old Bank Building, on 15 October 2021. However, due to COVID restrictions, it wasn't the big event Ban had hoped it would be, in no small part due to the absence of her husband and children. However, Ban was determined not to delay the opening any longer, which had been eagerly anticipated by the local community. Even though she was slightly disappointed about doing it alone, Ban smiled from ear to ear throughout the entire day, thanks to the help of her new team.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM OLLIE’S CAFE AND GROCER? You'll find a variety of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food on the menu at Ollie's. However, that is not the only thing that makes Ollie's a little bit different. To create a "happy life" and happy staff, Ban decided not to serve lattes and flat whites. Instead, she chose a highly regarded brand of coffee, "Good Joe Coffee", created by chef Al Brown.

popular with the locals, even though Ban changes the flavours from time to time to keep things fresh. It's part of what makes Ollie’s unique, and for Ban, it keeps things interesting for both her and her customers. The café is already building up a group of dedicated regulars, which means it must be working so far.

The benefits are a bottomless cup and no noisy coffee machines. You also don’t need a dedicated barista. Even though some may see this as risky, Ban believes this coffee style aligns with her values and vision for Ollie's.

Ollie’s serves traditional Levantine food that is simple, well-presented, and full of flavour. The grocery will be offering a selection of bread from Wild Wheat Artisan Bakery amongst other delicatessen style delights. And Ban is renowned for her outstanding baking skills, including what the café has branded “Levantshire Teas” (another twist on the mundane).

You also won’t find a set menu at Ollie’s. In Ban's opinion, set menus lead to a lot of food waste, and it is more sustainable to think only a week or even a day at a time. It requires more creativity and the use of the fresh produce you have on hand. Additionally, it allows her to share her love of unique flavours and Levantine dishes with passion and joy.

In Ban's mind, the café is not just a place to eat a meal, it’s a hub where visitors and locals can meet, talk and build a community. Ban believes that you should be able to talk for as long as you like, just as she remembers how life used to be in Iraq when her mother and some of the neighbours would stop and chat over coffee to discuss and solve the world’s problems.

You'll always find regular dishes like Baklava and Dolma that are proving to be very

THE FUTURE IS GREEN Fed up with serving up sub-par greens to his patrons, Ian King set about learning the best practice to grow the most nutritional green produce possible. Words Kate Moore

As a chef, Ian, who has worked in the industry for over 10 years across Australia and New Zealand, said he was “over dealing with greens that had already been in storage for five days and only had a single day’s life left”. To gain the knowledge he needed, he started working in a friend’s nursery in Australia before returning to New Zealand to put his ideas into practice by founding Eat Your Greens. Originally hailing from Takapuna, Ian returned to the shores he grew up on before bouncing around out West until finally landing in Omaha at Easter this year. This move has resulted in larger greenhouses, which has in turn led to an expansion of products, and Eat Your Greens is now excited to add heirloom tomatoes to their

extensive repertoire of greens, including Ian’s favourites: fava shoots, beetroot leaves, sunflower sprouts, and pea shoots. The Eat Your Greens philosophy is simple: to provide the best nutritionally dense greens possible on a 24-hour turn around – this means that they pick, pack, and deliver all in the same day. What sets these greens apart is the fact that they are grown in soil, not the coconut fibre that many other growers use. Growing in soil ensures excellent nutrient uptake, depth of flavour, and expanded shelf life. Eat your Greens is also big on reducing waste, so after every harvest the soil is composted before being reintroduced, completing a sustainable loop. Ian recognises that one of the most important

relationships a small, focused grower can have is with chefs and his greens frequent some of Auckland’s most recognised restaurants such as Homeland, Odette’s Eatery and Ripe Deli. Locally you can sample Eat Your Greens’ wares on dishes provided by The Sawmill and The Sculptureum. To learn more, head over to @eatyourgreensco and if you are inspired to fill your plate with green goodness you can order direct from the website for home delivery at eatyourgreens.co.nz. Once levels permit, Charlie’s will play host to bags of salad greens for locals to pick up. In the future, Ian plans to offer a one stop shop, so stay tuned as Eat Your Greens takes its next big steps. www.eatyourgreens.co.nz www.facebook.com/eatyourgreensnz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR New potatoes, early tomatoes, tender green beans, cucumbers and more zucchinis than you can possibly use will soon be making their way to your table. All that hard work preparing garden beds, making compost, planting and putting up trellises, is coming to fruition. Enjoy this harvest - you have earned it! Words Geoff Ledbrook

CAPSICUMS The capsicum family (also known as sweet peppers and chilli peppers) are heat lovers. December is a good time to get them established outdoors where they can enjoy the warmth our region’s climate provides. Amazingly flexible, this native of Mexico will brighten your garden and enrich your table. The range of varieties available gives a choice of colours, shapes – and in the case of chillies, heat! Capsicums grow 40 to 60cm high and need a warm, sunny spot in your garden. They prefer

STRESS-FREE PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL

free drained, fertile soil. If possible, plant in soil that has not grown other Solanum family plants in the last year (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants). Capsicum plants will need a stake or a low trellis for support. Depending on the plant, it is often good to thin out fruit or use some of the fruit at the green stage. As the fruit matures it does get heavier and branches may snap off. If your garden space is limited, capsicums are well suited to container growing. Choose a large pot (25 cm or more) and be prepared to keep them well watered and fertilised.

There can be times in your garden when you look with despair at the caterpillars munching through your broccoli, or greasy cutworms poking their noses out of tomatoes, or zucchini plants stricken with powdery mildew. Not to mention the green shield beetles that swarm like an army from mid-summer to pierce and suck at many of your best vegetables. And that’s just to name a few of the pests and diseases you often encounter in your quest to produce healthy produce free of insecticides or pesticides.

cabbage white butterfly is a big pest when it comes to brassicas. There comes a time from late spring onwards when I stop planting brassicas due to their susceptibility to the cabbage white butterfly – it just isn’t worth the trouble. I just buy the odd cabbage or cauli instead and use that space for something more productive. However, you could use an organic spray, “Bacillus thuringiensis”, which works against caterpillars very effectively. This product is permitted for use by organic growers and is widely available in small retail packs from garden centres. You still need a sprayer and time to do the spraying though!

As a rule, get your plants in early so that you can enjoy a good stretch of growing and harvest time before pests. For example,

Water stress, either too much or too little, is another area that can cause disease or poor growth. Sometimes a plant that is not thriving

Planting in a container will help you get your plants growing earlier by allowing you to use a hothouse, porch or pergola. Plants will mature 80 days from transplant, so expect fruit from mid-summer until early winter. You will have a bountiful supply of fruit to eat fresh, cook, dry or preserve.

or diseased can just need watering. For example, powdery mildew on zucchini can be due to lack of water. These big, vigorous plants need lots of water when the heat of early summer starts. Check the soil your plant is growing in. How dry is it? It may well be that the plant is moisture-stressed and simply needs a good watering. Most plants will prefer a deep watering less often rather than frequent watering that only penetrates the top layer of soil. As a home gardener you have the ability to produce the healthiest of spray-free produce. If the price you pay is having to pull out the odd plant, spend more time watering or squash bugs, that has got to be a good thing for you and your family’s health.

December is often a quiet month for new plantings, with many of the summer plantings of tomatoes, capsicums, and cucurbits already in place. For salad vegetables, like lettuce, it will be time to switch to planting open leaf varieties like Royal Oak Leaf or Lollo Rossa. The classic iceberg lettuces, including Great Lakes or Webbs Wonderful are also a good bet. Many of the varieties that worked so well earlier in spring will bolt and taste bitter if planted in December. Take advantage of spots in your garden that have periods of shade or that hold moisture well. Water in young plants well and be generous with the mulch to get the best results.

STABLES JOURNEY TO RESTORATION This small, boutique accommodation now sited in a Balinese-inspired private garden started its life on a thoroughbred horse and sheep breeding farm in Maxwell.

Cranleigh Stud has long been at the centre of the farming life for the Alexander family. As with most farms, the property was dotted with various outbuildings, some still in use and others no longer involved in the day-to-day work of the farm. One of those buildings, a long-forgotten stable, sat sinking into disrepair in a paddock, glory days far behind it. A trip to Maxwell to ‘save’ the history for the family instead turned into a two-year undertaking to restore the building, and the first step on this journey was to transport the building to Point Wells, allowing the council to both look at and hear the plans for the building’s restoration. The stables arrived on a crisp March Autumn day in 2014. While to most people it appeared that they had imported nothing more than a truck of demolition materials, Robyn and Hamish Alexander had a vision and were now emotionally and financially invested in this part of their family history. They had hoped to simply refurbish the stables, but new building codes dictated a total deconstruction and then reconstruction using a substantial amount of the salvaged timber.

42

DESIGN

Plans were drawn up and no shortage of ideas were flowing for the use of the existing beautiful Kauri and Rimu timbers, which date back many decades and had been preserved within the interior walls. It was crucial in this process to preserve the character of the building and ensure the integrity of the stables was not completely lost. The footprint was kept the same as the original and this determined room sizes. They employed a very empathetic building team led by Mike Bigwood and Steve Grey who embraced the challenge and presented a well built and thought-out construct that sensitively restored the tired old building. In addition to the build team, Neil Taylor Cabinetry was employed to remove large amounts of left-over timber, which was then used to build a kitchen, a laundry and wardrobes - all from Kauri - in a contemporary design that nevertheless felt at home in the original building. The internal stable doors and much of the furniture was also built by Neil Taylor Cabinetry, who fulfilled the brief to perfection. By late 2016 the building was complete and fully certified to accept paying guests.

This venture was completely new to the Alexanders, but luckily all their guests embraced their vision and appreciated the building and the site as much as they did. Bali Garden accommodation is now a standalone small home which sits in its own landscaped private garden, surrounded by palms and green oasis plantings. Having been built solely for couples, guests are able to enjoy a large master suite with its own bathroom, a second bathroom for visitors and a fully fitted kitchen and laundry, should you wish to cook and clean! The central double height breezeway is home to the dining area and features a wooden table, also made by Neil Taylor Cabinetry, and an adjacent TV snug for when you need to cosy up. While the surrounding countryside boasts many attractions, with Matakana and Omaha just five minutes away, the guests often comment how difficult it is to leave the tranquillity of the garden and internal space. THE SANDALMAKER "I have always been a maker. Any space filled with tools and materials for creating is my natural home" - Corrina McMath, Founder of Workshop Sole. Words Kirsty Millar

Corrina’s workshop in Mangawhai is a hive of pattern drafting, cutting and lasting, sewing, gluing, sanding, polishing and stamping. A place where her own hands (and heart) are bringing individually handcrafted leather sandals to people who appreciate quality, character and style.

sandal-making class ignited her love for this traditional craft.

Corrina is a sandalmaker who fell into the craft after an adventurous period in ceramic sculpture. With the arrival of children, sculpture became too time intensive for her to juggle, but Corrina’s compulsion to make never left and she found herself immersed in dressmaking and fibre arts. She loved working with natural materials and enjoyed the challenges and rewards of tailoring a garment to celebrate the uniqueness of the body it was being made for.

Next, she was put in touch with shoemaker Paul Clough from The Sandalmaker. Paul let her hangout in his workshop and learn about the tools, equipment and different materials required to bring shoes to life. Corrina would bring him sandals she was working on at home and he would generously critique them and allow her to use the right equipment to simplify the process.

When one of her colleagues mentioned shoemaking, a lightbulb flickered. Could this be the perfect marriage of workshop time, creativity and practicality? She attended Shoe School in Wellington and when there, a

Shoes were something Corrina could customise and wear. Best still, they gave her a reason to hunker down in the workshop with a bunch of vintage tools and machinery and get creative.

As she learnt, she collected tools, sourced old machines and revitalised them. She reached out to other shoemakers and leatherworkers around Aotearoa and was encouraged by the welcoming community she discovered, who openly shared their knowledge and resources. With practice came a thirst for more

knowledge. In 2020, Corrina got in touch with the experienced and traditionally trained bespoke shoemaker Sue Engels. She completed Sue’s shoemaking course on Waiheke Island and continues to draw inspiration and advice from this talented shoemaker. Today, Corrina is excited to offer her handcrafted leather sandals on a ‘made to order’ basis through her Workshop Sole web store. Every pair of sandals is individually made, slowly and carefully, from quality, locally-sourced materials, for a customised and comfortable fit. This means your sandals are made from scratch once your order is placed and typically take 3-4 weeks to be completed. But this slower fashion is worth the wait - your sandals will be durable, repairable and made just for you! CAROLINE JANE BELL A ceramic and encaustic artist based in the beautiful Whangaripo Valley just out of Matakana.

is, in her own words. “Developed to help and awaken our senses and set us free to explore our true selves, it is a journey from beginning to end and has an air of mystery until the object is finished.”

Caroline hasn’t always been an artist. In her “last life” before retirement, she worked as a palliative care nurse and midwife. She has seen the joys and reality of human nature, from which she draws inspiration for her unique ceramic vessels, sculptures and paintings. Surrounded by native bush, Caroline's artistry is influenced by nature's patterns that are unique and intrinsic to the environment she lives in. She creates art that is inspired by nature, and that aims to embrace the fullness of nature’s beauty. At present she is in the process of moving to her daughter and son-in-law’s property in Whangaripo Valley where she, her husband Coll and Jill the dog are building a house. They are also in the process of creating a quirky, fun studio where Caroline intends to hold workshops in the surrounding park-like, natural wetland setting. The philosophy of her creative process

Having no formal training, Caroline learnt how to throw pots, build sculptures and paint in encaustics by taking various classes and workshops in Auckland. She has found her own way of creating unique pieces. She recently won first prize for an encaustic painting in the beginner’s class at the Mahurangi Tennis Annual Art Show. Her ceramic work can be seen at Quarry Arts in Whangarei and at the Matakana Art Gallery. At first glance, ceramics and encaustic painting may seem to have little in common. However in her sculptural work, an encaustic hot wax finish can sometimes be applied to bisque-ware instead of a glaze. Caroline works in stoneware clay and most of her vessels and sculptures are hand built, but sometimes they are thrown on the wheel with

the shape later being altered by hand. With her ceramic vessels her aim is to work quickly and spontaneously, letting expression find its own path in an abstract representation of colour and shape. The work progresses layer upon layer, always allowing deeper areas and gestural marks to peek through. She describes how she is drawn to highly textured and organic shapes. With her encaustic paintings she describes how she enjoys the translucency of the hot wax as it plays and forms unexpected shapes. She enjoys the use of the torch flame that she uses to manipulate and fuse the layers of a painting. Following the laying down of coloured wax, she then carves down into its depths to reveal what is underneath. Caroline can be contacted via her website and her Facebook page. www.carolinejaneart.co www.facebook.com/carolinejanebellart

PLANTBASED RECIPES TO KICKSTART YOUR HEALTH "For me, being healthy isn’t about being on some fancy diet, it’s about nourishing your body and fuelling it with a variety of colourful, whole, plant-based foods."

24-year-old Kiwi surfer, diver and recipe developer Kelsi Boocock set up the Instagram account @healthykelsii during lockdown to share healthy recipes. Having gathered over 14,000 followers, ‘Healthy Kelsi’ has now written and photographed her first cook book. After developing digestive issues, Kelsi turned to whole, plant-based foods and couldn’t believe the impact it had on her health. This is why she wanted to share her recipes with others. "I wanted to create a cook book that would help people make delicious food and also help them feel their absolute best. Eating a wide variety of plants has helped me find a balanced, healthy lifestyle without ever compromising on taste or flavour. I honestly

believe Healthy Kelsi is suited for everyone. Even my dad and boyfriend, who both love meat, absolutely demolish every single recipe in this book!" she says. Healthy Kelsi is bursting with colour and is packed with travel and lifestyle photos as well as over 100 different plant-based recipes including Chocolate Porridge and Coconut Corn Fritters for breakfast. There are nutritious smoothies, tropical cocktails and snacks including homemade crackers and dips as well as vibrant salads and wholesome

dinners, not to mention desserts, including Kelsi’s favourite: Miso Caramel Slice and Self Sauce Sticky Date Pudding. Kelsi draws culinary inspiration from her adventurous lifestyle, infusing her recipes with the flavours and cooking methods of Indonesia, Italy and Japan, as well as Fiji, where she spent part of her childhood. The book also has a dedicated section that covers staple ingredients, substitutes for those who are gluten- or nut-free and a guide to understanding your food sources.

BRINGING RITUAL INTO YOUR EVERYDAY Founded by two friends who share a deep love for slow living, self-care and the healing properties of plants, Ritualis is a bespoke range of organic, naturopathically formulated herbal teas blended here on the Matakana Coast. Photos Brijana Cato

Nikola (left) and Christina

When local naturopath and yoga teacher Nikola Magerkorth and food columnist and wholefood recipe creator Christina Leon discovered their shared love for herbal tea, they decided to create something beautiful, meaningful and therapeutic to share with others; something that would bring joy and wellness into people’s everyday life. Ritualis is Latin for ‘ritual’, a concept that lies at the heart of Christina and Nikola’s inspiration. Through their range of teas, they hope to cultivate simple daily rituals that will enrich your wellbeing. With a bespoke range of therapeutic signature blends, Ritualis has come to the market with your complete wellness in mind.

Focusing on common modern-day aliments and inspired by nature, Ritualis blends are both beautiful to look at and easy to drink (hot or cold). They are formulated at therapeutic levels, meaning these blends work alongside the body to gently bring it back into balance. For Christina, it took a turn of her own health to find her love for herbal tea. After being diagnosed with the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Christina started creating her own herbal teas to support and nourish her thyroid and body naturally. Her thyroid-healing tea became the inspiration for the Restore blend. She also knows the importance of simple, everyday rituals,

seeing them “as an integral part of selfcare, self-love and achieving optimal wellbeing and health in your life."

As a naturopath and herbalist, Nikola

sees herbal tea as “a non-invasive, safe way to bring wellness and nature into

your everyday.” She has used traditional medicine alongside scientifically-based evidence to mindfully formulate the

Ritualis blends. Every Ritualis tea blend

is made using certified organic loose-leaf ingredients, naturopathically formulated,

hand-blended on the Matakana Coast, free from artificial colours and flavours, and

delivered in home-compostable packaging.

DISCOVER A MORE BALANCED WAY TO DIET When you hear the word “diet” you may think of hard work, boring food, and being constantly hungry and dissatisfied with low energy levels. It doesn't need to be this way! A diet should have you feeling satisfied and motivated with good energy levels and still be able to eat some delicious treats. Words Avalon Stapleton - A2B Nutrition

Often people make the mistake of going on a diet heavy with restrictions - this includes most fad diets. Unfortunately this can do more harm than good, both mentally and physically. It can create negative feelings around your diet and set up an unhealthy way of thinking about food. Let’s take the keto diet as an example. This particular diet heavily restricts carbohydrates. While this diet can be appropriate for someone who lives a very sedentary lifestyle, like someone who works a desk job with little physical activity, it can be harmful to people who have active jobs like tradies, nurses, hospitality workers, or people who live an active lifestyle like walkers, cyclists, sports players and gym

goers. These people can be left feeling tired, and suffering from poor concentration and low performance. Carbs are an extremely important part of a healthy diet and shouldn't always be viewed as the enemy. A healthy diet is all about balance - you should still be able to enjoy the foods you love guilt free and feel good while still seeing results. Coming into summer people are naturally more active so it's a great time to focus on your health and set some goals. COVID-19 becoming a part of our everyday lives is another incentive to invest in your health and fitness. Research from the British Medical Journal showed that those who do not exercise had a 226% greater likelihood

of being hospitalised from the effects of COVID-19. Lockdowns definitely don’t help with our eating and exercise habits. The New Zealand Exercise Association research shows that New Zealanders put on weight at ten times the normal rate from June 2020 to June 2021. Staying fit and healthy may seem like an impossible and overwhelming task in this strange new world but A2B’s unique approach has seen their clients stay on track and achieve great results. A2B will set you up with a diet plan that is completely personalised to your lifestyle. A2B not only helps their clients to see results but also educates them along the way. They want to work to eliminate yoyo dieting and make

DEBONO SPEARGUNS WHERE BEAUTY MEETS PRECISION In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of people have been faced with redundancy forcing them to assess their options in order to make a living. However, for one Warkworth local, redundancy has presented itself as an opportunity to innovate and find a niche in a booming market. Photos Rachael Dewhirst Art

Woodworking hobbyist Matt Debono honed his craftsman skills through rebuilding a badly rotten 35-foot Kauri sailboat designed by the late legendary boat designer Laurie Davidson. With these acquired skills, and his passion for spearfishing, building handcrafted wooden spearguns seemed an obvious move. "To be honest, it takes a lot of courage to start a business. I always wanted to, and redundancy was actually a well-welcomed catalyst for me to pursue that dream." Over the past few months, drawing inspiration from the beautiful lines of classic New Zealand yachts, Matt embarked on his journey to bring to market his cutting-edge brand, Debono Spearguns NZ. The vision was to introduce a product to

market that incorporated the utmost quality and a stunning aesthetic not yet seen in the spearfishing space in New Zealand. "The aim, of course, is to try and produce the best spearguns in the world. Although small, New Zealand has always punched above its weight when it comes to design and innovation - I knew I could have the same effect in my industry." Matt uses the best trigger mechanisms in the world coupled with the prized timber of the marine industry, Burmese Teak. He uses five laminations of Teak bonded together with layers of uni-directional carbon fibre. The added stiffness of the carbon allows the speargun to have a sleeker profile than a lot of the other wooden guns on the market. The lines on the Debono Spearguns are

not just aesthetically beautiful, but each has a purpose such as hydrodynamics, optimising load points or aiding in the speargun's balance. After months of research and development, the project has come to a head, and three models have been released: • The Debono Carbon • The Debono Carbon Roller • The Debono “Wettie” model Debono Spearguns can be viewed and purchased on the official website, Instagram, at Wettie (New Zealand's largest spearfishing store based in Albany) or by appointment at his workshop in Warkworth. www.debonospearguns.co.nz debonospearguns@gmail.com

POLAR FESTIVITIES Words Georgia Third

Just a whiff of the scent of pine at Christmas transports me to a snowy place far away. Visions of Santa’s winter wonderland spring to mind, but the origin of his connection to the North Pole is unknown. It seems to have been a gradual process; reindeer were first referenced in the 1823 poem ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and the unsuccessful attempts at finding the North Pole in the 1840s and 1850s inspired speculation about what might be found there. In 1866 a collection of drawings were labelled Santa’s village, “Santa Clausville, N.P.” (short for North Pole), and the address to Santa’s workshop was born. Bereft of land, the North Pole’s constantly moving sea ice prevents any settlement from developing there, but the South Pole, situated over the Antarctic continent, has permanent communities. As Christmas marks the warmest months in Antarctica, it’s the busiest time of year for those dwelling in the deep south.

58

DISCOVER

New Zealand’s Scott base can house up to 85 people and Christmas marks a rare day off to enjoy activities like Secret Santa and Christmas lunch. At the South Pole, station workers compete in the “race around the world,” looping around the most southerly geographic point on Earth. Highly contested prizes include an upgrade from the standard twominute bi-weekly shower to a five-minute one! Circumnavigators also get to boast they’ve celebrated Christmas in every time zone. For the early explorers racing to the South Pole, Christmas was a more primitive affair. Amundsen and his team were the first to reach the South Pole a few days before Christmas in 1911 and their victorious meal consisted of pulverised biscuit porridge and a sausage of dried milk. Though it sounds unappealing, Amundsen wrote, “I doubt whether anyone at home enjoyed his Christmas dinner as much as we did.”

Rivals Scott and his men were unaware Amundsen had already reached the South Pole and celebrated Christmas with high hopes. Their feast had a main of horsemeat with onion and curry powder, followed by arrowroot, biscuit hoosh, plum pudding, cocoa with raisins, and a dessert of caramels and ginger! Later in 1915, Shackleton was attempting to cross the diameter of the continent and celebrated Christmas three days early to lighten the mood. He wrote, “For the last time in eight months we had a really good meal… anchovies in oil, baked beans, and jugged hare made a glorious mixture such as we have not dreamed of since our school-days." Even early explorers shared the notion of many today; Christmas is about good food and good company. georgia3rd@gmail.com

NEW PROJECT ON THE HORIZON Tutor, Steve Pound from Algies Bay, works with learners at Horizon College in Years 7-10 twice a week, helping them to learn automotive skills by rebuilding a Honda Civic EK that had previously been damaged in an accident. The car, and parts for it, were very generously donated to the College to get the course started by Martin Dunn and Matt Dalimore. By working in small groups and building relaxed, learning relationships alongside passionate motor sports enthusiasts, learners are developing skills in panel beating, fabrication and mechanics in the process. Though thwarted by lockdowns, it is the school's hope to complete the car in time for an endurance race in summer where some learners will participate in a support role at the race track. www.facebook.com/Horizon-School-Race-Car-Project-104040021870436 022 198 6695

CREATING NEW TRADITIONS IN OUR NEW NORMAL Looking back on the end of 2021, it would be fair to feel like there is little to celebrate. And, looking forward to a world of uncertainty – where there will be a new normal, is a tiring thought right now.

Dean Weber, besoul funeral director with his wife Karina and children Louie and Lilah.

In these times, it’s important to re-centre, and keep hold of some traditions. One of these being Christmas, taking the time to connect with loved ones still here with us, and remember those that have passed. The COVID pandemic has brought new challenges to the role of a funeral director. Over this period of restrictions on funerals and the effect on how loved ones can mark the passing of a family member, the importance of creating a time to say goodbye has only been heightened. There has been a visible impact of not having the ‘social net’ around at these difficult times as numbers that can attend a service or funeral have been restricted. At besoul, we have tried to take a modern approach to a modern issue - offering the usual activities to be done together rather than assign individuals to tasks. A new tradition of sorts has started to emerge with some of more intimate services being more meaningful to some, giving close family members more opportunity to share personal memories and painting a fuller picture of the person’s life. Sharing stories about the deceased in this setting has created a unique environment removing any usual ‘social filter’

that would be in place with larger events. Final farewells are done as a group, followed by closing the casket together and everyone escorting their loved one into the gathering space as one supportive unit. Most have chosen to all walk out together, not just the usual pallbearers. It has been an encouraging experience to see humanity flourish under challenging times, deciding that a service was still important, no matter the permitted size and to grieve in the moment instead of delaying a farewell, and any associated healing, until the public can gather. Whatever the new approach to death looks like in the future, going through this has created space for all of us across the globe to think about what is most important and how we would like to remember and be remembered. As we approach what may also be a new way of celebrating Christmas, as travel may be difficult and gatherings still restricted, take some time to think of a new way that a loved one that has passed may be remembered. We have shared some of our ideas in case they may start a new tradition for you.

Some ideas from besoul to remember your loved ones at Christmas. • C ook their favourite meal or dish to share over Christmas dinner. • C reate a playlist of their favourite songs to share – they are sure to generate some memories and stories. • D onate to a charity they would have supported in their name. • G o somewhere that was special to them for that after Christmas dinner walk or Boxing Day picnic. • C reate a memory jar for everyone to fill with memories (these don’t have to be about the people that are no longer with you). Take turns at reading out the memories. • F rame your favourite photo of them and place in a space at or near the table. 12 Gumfield Drive, Warkworth 09 422 2534 ADVERTORIAL

AUTHOR EXTRAORDINAIRE Words Alex Stone

Ivor Wilkins of Sandspit has encountered just about the whole gamut of experiences a writer can have. Now he’s “pretty buggered.” He’s operating at normal pace now – “rather than the hundred miles an hour” that has defined his recent years. His latest book was to be launched in midOctober, and unusually, when I spoke with him, it still had a mystery title, which Ivor could not reveal. It was to be part of the “hoopla of the launch.” The title is “evocative – it speaks about passion for the sea.” The sub-title gives the game away: The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron 150 years – 1871-2021. It was finished in May, to include the successful defence by the Squadron of the America’s Cup in Auckland, in the extra-ordinary foilborne AC 75s. The book will be available at the Squadron’s retail shop, and has been pre-ordered by many of the venerable club’s 3,500 members. But I reckon it’s an important contribution to our nation’s deeply-ingrained love of boats and the sea. It needs a wider audience. Ivor’s last two books were “all essentially about love stories.” Classic – The revival of classic boating in New Zealand, a handsome, “coffee-table tome” was a big commercial success. It has been through two printings, selling over 6,000 copies, and was nominated for the non-fiction New

Zealand Book of the Year in 2010. The book is remarkable too, for its stunning collection of photographs, which reveal the art and majesty of the beautiful yacht and launch designs which have graced the Hauraki Gulf (and further) for nearly 200 years.

Cups. He also did a three-volume series on the BMW Oracle America’s Cup campaigns and he produces the RNZYS magazine, Breeze.

Ivor was well-placed to cover this subject. A yachtsman from way back, he and his wife Elspeth arrived here from Scotland by means of a halfway-round-the-world voyage. That was full of wonderful stories – like the episode of their first arrival at Paihia in New Zealand. Pouring down with classic New Zealand rain, Elspeth and Ivor were first asked to pay for the top-up of fresh water they requested for their voyaging yacht!

Ivor’s new work was a reaction to his many years as a hard-hitting front-line journalist. In South Africa, he had written a groundbreaking expose of the Broederbond, the secret organisation behind the Apartheid state. The Super-Afrikaners (1979, and still in print) was “pretty unpopular with the government” and led to death threats against him and his co-author Hans Strydom. The book revealed the inner organisation, which was the nexus for Afrikaner power in cultural, economic, intellectual, military, and political areas. A brave, necessary, undertaking.

After that wee hiccup, they soon after found themselves anchored at Sandspit. Ivor said to Elspeth, “This is where I want to live someday.” He became editor with NZ Yachting Magazine, covering many America’s

Heavy stuff. Back to the love stories. Ivor followed Classic with Classic Planes – another beauty. It was a learning experience: “The air-to-air stuff [photography] was very cool – I loved it.”

“The characters I met were great fun too – really passionate. It was a wonderful experience getting to know the classic aircraft community.” After Elspeth and Ivor’s children Matthew and Sally left home, it was time for the dream. “Twenty-five years after that first anchorage, we bought land and built a house in Sandspit.” And it’s now time for this acclaimed author to “finally take the rest of the year off. We’ll see what happens next.” A final, pithy quote: “Age is a bastard. But I can’t see myself contemplating retirement.” Too right, mate – there are more classic stories out there. www.offshoreimages.com

QUEEN OF MUCK What had large chunks of itself written in Matakana and is creating a buzz in the children’s chapter book scene? Queen of Muck, the debut novel from Isaac Thackray. Words Gemma Finlay

Originally due for publication in February 2022, a surge of pre-order demand saw the release date pulled forward to midNovember 2021.

cupcake, a talking fox and swords, sneakwalking along with a wickedly entertaining baddie who has a lot to say for herself and a rather weak stomach.

Queen of Muck begins with two sisters, Lucy and Lily, who are desperate to find their missing granddad.

Thackray, a Matakana local, found progress on the book really accelerated whenever he worked in the village.

But first they must survive a great and unusual adventure filled with brutes in nailpolish, a strange bookshop, a children-eating beast, a very bad orchestra, flying chunks of

“Matakana is such a fantastic place to write,” Thackray says. “There’s always a great vibe around the place, loads of interesting people and sensational coffee.”

REVIEW

A freelance advertising writer by day, he was inspired to write Queen of Muck after reading “about a million” children’s books with his daughters, Alice (11 years old) and Lila (9 years old). “I felt like there was a huge lack of chapter books with great adventures and lots of funny bits, characters that actually have character and girls right in the thick of the action.” So, has Queen of Muck corrected the problem?

“Alice and Lila think so and they’re never afraid to be brutally honest about these things.” Thackray was tough on himself too. “To me, the book had to be lively all the way through. So that no matter where you open it, I’ll be happy you landed on that bit.” Setting out to write that kind of book is one thing, but pulling it off turned out to be quite another. Isaac says getting Queen of Muck finished and out on the shelves took more hard work and time (plus a truckload of coffee, he adds) than he ever imagined, but he loved the whole journey. “I thought I’d be on the next book by now but with everything happening on this one, I can’t ever get near it - I’m hanging on by my fingernails!” Queen of Muck is available now where all good books are sold, or order your copy at queenofmuck.com, $25 RRP (Mary Egan Publishing). www.queenofmuck.com Sawmill-Junktion-advert-231121.pdf
