A WORLD-FIRST CAR TV SHOW REVS UP FROM MATAKANA
‘Start Me Up’ is the world's first TV car show based on the internet phenomenon of 'cold starting’. It was launched recently on TVNZ On Demand - and it all started on the back roads of Matakana.
getting them going before the sun goes down.
material, shot with the idea to pitch to TVNZ.
"It's a bit like a classic car show meets Country Calendar, with a dash of Mucking In," says the show's creator, writer and producer Michael Lamb.
The online craze of 'cold starting' attracts millions of viewers to short clips of cars, that haven't run for years or even decades, being 'cold started'.
The series is presented by Mike 'MOD' O'Donnell (car aficionado and former boss of Trade Me) and Martin Lafferty, an engineer and mechanical guru.
‘Start Me Up’ takes that idea a little further. The show is all about finding abandoned, forgotten or just clapped out old cars that are 'cold start' candidates. Then working out what's wrong with them, scrounging parts from 'shed guys' and
Michael Lamb has been a regular visitor to this area over the years. He decided that the combination of Matakana's bucolic beauty, plenty of old cars and some local friends in the film industry was the perfect combination to get
Matakana locals who worked on the show included former, TV commercials director Mark Lever who applied directorial touches, filmmaker and cameraman Peter Young (well known for Hunger for the Wild and shooting the Matakana school cookbook!) and Fin Woods who helped with camera, on locations which included Smith Road and Whangateau.
6
"We found some wonderful cars, but too many to film!" says Michael. "There was a gorgeous Morris 8 at Sandspit and we even got offered a 1972 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. But we generally have
a pretty tight list of criteria to meet, including not running for at least 10-20 years, so that makes it challenging!
Valiant, a 1948 Morris Commercial tow truck and even an ancient Land Cruiser killed by a bourbon and cola-powered attempt to adjust the tappets.
But Michael says the show would never have happened without the kindness, generosity and support of Matakana locals.
"That said, we also heard about a few more cars while we were shooting. One in particular sounds amazing, a very special old US Embassy car, so we'd love to come back and film some more in Matakana," Michael says.
"Those are the 'star cars',” says Michael, "but there are all sorts of other interesting vehicles, many with a lot of New Zealand history behind them. Starting up the old cars is a big part of the show, but equally so are the characters and places where we go in search of parts. We even found an amazing private collection of old Hudsons and Valiants that had never been filmed before."
"It's amazing when people are so generous with their time and energy,” he says “Matakanians are a very special, very supportive bunch. There are so many creative people in the area, it's just a remarkable part of the world."
The debut season of ‘Start Me Up’ features six hero vehicles, including a beautifully rusty 1928 Dodge that the boys found on a hill in Wright Road. Local man Garth Hodge features in that episode, complete with a look around his shed full of intriguing mechanical wonders. Other vehicles in the show include a 1970 VG
Filming began in Matakana then shifted to the Wairarapa. The show has recently acquired a large, international distributor and was taken to the world's largest TV market, MIPCOM, in France, in October.

PROFILE
ON THE ROAD AGAIN - WARWICK RHODES WORDS
It turned out the couple, who founded local civil construction business Rhodes for Roads in 1985, are only moving up the road to Matakana. But after decades of community service, including involvement in the gardening and social clubs, multiple tennis court upgrades and a significant role in constructing the Point Wells to Omaha Walkway, it was time for a party. It’s been over 40 years since 17-year-old Warwick roared into what was then a ‘pensioners’ paradise’, in his burgundy Valiant Charger to take up residence at the family bach. He’d grown up in Warkworth, but says he didn’t stay at Mahurangi College “long enough to become head boy’”. He grins, “the teachers thought I might do better getting a job.”
SHEEHY
So at 16 Warwick followed his father into local, authority roading, where the engineers he’d known since childhood helped him obtain an exemption licence to operate larger machines. “They gave me an opportunity even though I was very young,” he says. “I’d bank on someone not turning up on a Saturday morning, so I could drive the loader or grader.” It’s a scheme Warwick is keen to see reinstated. As local chair of the National Road Carriers Association, he has been lobbying hard for the introduction of a mid-level machinery licence, to allow youths to operate smaller excavators and light trucks. “There’s a big gap between a car licence at 16 and a heavy trade licence at 18. We’ve got capable young guys and good employment opportunities, but for two years they’re stuck with labouring. They lose interest.”
When the government deregulated the roading industry in the early 1980s, Warwick seized the opportunity, bought a grader and began contract work on seal extensions around Auckland. “We were pulling up tram lines on Quay Street and thought nothing of it,” he says. Seal extensions, it turns out, make a lot of people happy. While the business has expanded to include over 120 vehicles and broad civil construction experience, sealing the roads to Omaha, Martins Bay, Matakana Hill and Wellsford to Pakiri remain among his most satisfying projects. “Dust is a huge problem, so when you extend the seal locals bring out scones and pikelets for the boys or drop in a box of beers.” He laughs, “Of course 30 years later when you come back to widen the road, no one’s happy!” Warwick takes pride in the company’s contribution to road safety. “The road to Auckland has improved hugely over the years. At one point,

surgeons were campaigning just to get median barriers on the Harbour Bridge. We’ve done many road realignments to take out black spots.” The challenge with large scale, highway projects is that a change in government often brings a change in priorities. “We’ve got to keep progressing and take the motorway further north, or there could be chaos through the Dome Valley.” Rhodes for Roads now has over 40 staff, including several second generation employees. “I enjoy working with the young guys and seeing them get into their first homes,” he smiles. “I’m keen on a good balance between work and family. I didn’t have it right in the early days, I travelled too much.’ With sons Troy and Tyson now working in the business and raising their families, Warwick and Katie are looking forward to enjoying the parklike grounds of their new lifestyle block. Only this time, Warwick will be roaring up the drive in his treasured, teal blue, Mark III Zephyr.

GIFTS FOR STARSHIP Every year a local family gathers and delivers presents for sick children stuck in Starship hospital during Christmas time. Many of them are in and out of hospital or spend long periods of time there, and the time can certainly drag. This year’s collection has begun and they are welcoming donations. Items such as colouring books, pencils, stickers and Lego, are all ideal and should come in their original packaging. “It really brightens kids’ days and the parents know they are being thought of too,” says mum Melissa, who is heading up the collection. Call or text to arrange the collection of donations.

TWIG & BLOOM
Starting off her career life as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Caro’s fascination with biology, her creative brain and love of flowers, led her to go on and train as a florist. She has alternated between the two careers for the past 30 years. Caro dreamed of one day owning her own florist shop in a beautiful place. Dreams do come true and it was by sheer coincidence, being in the right place at the right time, that Caro came upon purchasing Twig & Bloom, in Matakana Village.
Living in Wanaka and holidaying in Whangateau every year since she was a child, Caro was having lunch in Matakana when she saw the for-sale sign in the window of Twig & Bloom. “I knew instantly that fate had brought me there. I purchased the shop pretty much the next day! I’m incredibly happy and feel as though my life has done a full circle. I’m back where I belong!” The shop is mainly focused on fresh flowers, online shopping, beautiful bouquets and floral arrangements of every description and, of course,
wedding flowers. However, it also has a colourful array of indoor plants and pots and a range of unique gifts and gift hampers. Being fiercely antiplastic, Caro likes to focus on natural products.

The idea for Great Barrier Island Bee Co was conceived when Danvers was sitting on a friend’s veranda on the island just over ten years ago. He was reading about the history of the island at the time and was fascinated by the pioneering beekeepers of those early years. Suddenly he realised that the manuka trees around him were humming with bees. A few weeks later, having combined his cosmetics knowledge with research on benefits of manuka honey, Danvers had created a fledgling new brand which would support and promote Great Barrier Island.

“The history of honey on the island is something I’m really passionate about,” Danvers enthuses. He’s pretty keen on Great Barrier Island generally and is committed to raising the profile of its pristine environments. GBI Bee Co supports various charities on the island: the Aotea Family Support Group, local schools and the surf club as well as lots of fundraising events. There are now over 20 products in the Great Barrier Island Bee Co range, from a sugar scrub to body butter, as well as a new natural 30SPF sunscreen and two after-sun products. New for Matakana Botanicals is a chef’s range – a zingy combination of lemongrass, lime and bergamot in a hand wash, lotion, candle and room spray. This Christmas is a poignant one for Danvers however. His beloved mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers eight years ago and has had some significant health issues recently. However, when clearing out the family home, Danvers found some old canisters of fragrance. One was labelled simply ‘Christmas’. It still had some essential oil in it and Danvers was amazed at how well the cool, dark basement had preserved it. “It brought back wonderful memories of those early days at Christmas,” Danvers says. “We had it re-created by a fragrance expert and with mum very much in mind, we’ve decided to create a limited edition Christmas candle with it.” In a beautiful gold pot with a silver lining, it’s a long-lasting beeswax and soy blend. And with every sale of the candle, Matakana Botanicals will donate 20% to Alzheimer’s New Zealand. It’s a fitting tribute to the woman who began it all 30 years ago.

SOUL FOOD Alma Wholefood is Matakana’s newest ‘foodie’ hangout, bringing plantbased breakfast, lunch and snack options to the village. Mai Barton, who is from Argentina, recently moved to the area with her husband, Hamish and sons Santiago, eight and Tomas, five. They are so happy with their decision, absolutely loving the beautiful ‘country’ lifestyle and what the area has to offer. Leaving her finance background behind, Mai is now following her passion for wholesome food. She loves sharing her love for ‘real food’ with her family and now, with the community. For her it is about creating nourishing food with lots of colour and goodness, showing that eating healthy is fun and tasty! Alma means ‘soul’ in Spanish. Some of Alma’s delicious goodness include the Green Goodness smoothie bowl, which is a blend of mango, banana, spinach and coconut cream, topped with freeze dried raspberries, coconut flakes and Alma’s buckwheat mix (nuts, seeds, buckwheat) and an optional drizzle of peanut butter. Wholesome bowls change weekly, salads when it is warm and soups during the colder months. Currently on offer are salads, which are full of colour, a bit of texture with nuts/seeds and dressings such as tahini, hummus, and avocado. Berry Beet smoothie is a blend of beetroot, raspberries, banana, almond milk and a touch of vanilla. Nutty Green is a blend of spinach, kale, banana, almond butter, cinnamon and dates. Acai Bowls, Mango chia pots, raw slices and snacks complete the list. Alma is located behind The Bach, Matakana. Open Fridays and Saturdays and will open more days during summer. A good way to stay up to date is following Alma on Instagram @almawholefood.

FOUNDRY FORGES A NEW CRAFT CHOCOLATE MOVEMENT WORDS

One would assume when given just two simple ingredients, that the number of possible flavour combinations would be fairly easy to predict. However, in the hands of chocolate maker David Herrick, the results are numerous, surprising, and you could even say; symphonic.
fruit, warm spices to hints of caramel. Beans are sourced from the world’s most expressive cacao growing regions - Peru, Tanzania, Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Bolivia and Ecuador, and are skilfully handled to produce distinctive flavours that must be tasted to be believed.
David and his wife Janelle are the magicians behind Foundry Chocolate, New Zealand's newest craft chocolate maker. And just like the world’s finest single malt distilleries and craft vineyards, the Mahurangi-based chocolate maker is dedicated to capturing the unique character of origin.
The husband and wife team, have both applied their ‘craft’ in their own unique way. David has not only accentuated the ingredients’ provenance and terroir, he’s tinkered with time, temperature and even the chocolate making machinery to ensure each micro-batch is unforgettable. Janelle has put her knowledge of art-direction and design into packaging, that when unwrapped, feels like an event in itself. The anticipation of opening each resealable parcel is like unwrapping gifts on Christmas morning.
Foundry’s meticulous bean-to-bar process uses only two ingredients, cacao beans and organic sugar, to make dark chocolate with a myriad of flavour notes ranging from honey to ripe tropical
This passion and attention to detail is the reason Foundry Chocolate is a truly ‘craft’ product. There’s consideration in every step, which makes eating chocolate exciting again. And while enjoying it, you also need to remind yourself that there are only two ingredients – nothing else. The stone fruit, lychee or fruitcake flooding you palate are simply the natural flavours of the cacao, accentuated with exceptional care, skill and a whole lot of love. Foundry’s six single-origin bars are each individually numbered and will make delightful Christmas gifts. SOUGHT AFTER BEACHSIDE LIVING FOUND AT BOATHOUSE BAY
Located on the coastline of Auckland’s Mahurangi Peninsula, just 50 minutes from central Auckland, is a new residential development. Snells Beach will be home to Boathouse Bay, comprising of 33 unique homes with stunning sea views. Offering residents the quintessential Kiwi bach lifestyle with premium design, luxury finishes, a community park and prime coastal amenities. 50% of this beach side development has already sold and construction of infrastructure is underway. Purchasers of Boathouse Bay have had opportunities to meet the development team and are looking forward to moving in. David Charnin and Erris Scott, purchasers at Boathouse Bay, love the modern boat shed design and location, just 50 metres from the beach contained in a private, community setting. “We love what Crosson Architects have achieved, and the Boffa Miskell landscape design will give the small neighbourhood a distinct character,” says David Charnin and Erris Scott (pictured on-site at Snells Beach, metres from the site of Boathouse Bay). Fellow purchasers at Boathouse Bay, Mitch and Sue Hutchings, had searched long and hard to find ADVERTORIAL

a home in a beautiful environment with amenities at their fingertips. “It is unique and different, and we searched for a long time before we discovered Boathouse Bay. It’s everything we ever dreamed of!”
“Boathouse Bay has been designed so that residents feel as if they’re part of the magnificent beachside environment. It’s a very desirable opportunity to live in a small-scale community at Snells Beach.”
Boathouse Bay will be set amongst landscaped sand dunes and native bush. Inspired by the boat sheds, the houses will range from single level to double storey and one three storey tower home, providing diversity instead of a uniform design.
The architectural and landscape design concept has certainly resonated with purchasers, as Mitch and Sue say of Boathouse Bay, “It will allow us to live in a way we never thought possible. We love the concept of a small community living by the beach in a setting that is quite different from the usual suburban development, while being just a short drive to Warkworth and the surrounding areas, there is so much to choose from.”
Architect Ken Crosson says Boathouse Bay is set to challenge the way that Kiwis think about coastal living. “The vision for this coastal development was to find another way of looking at this site, to get more people to be a part of this special coastal community and bring price points down. It’s a contemporary take on the traditional Kiwi bach, so more people can achieve this kind of living.” Renowned landscape architect Rachel de Lambert from Boffa Miskell says the design of the development allows its homes to settle into the dramatic coastal setting, tucked between the native forest hill, headline backdrop and restored dunes that define the arc of the beach.

WOODCOCKS WALNUT FARM WORDS
Driving down the lush driveway into Woodcocks Walnut Farm in Warkworth, we’re welcomed by horses grazing under the mature trees. “We are lucky that the horses can graze around the trees. They keep the grass down and fertilize the soil organically,” says owner Chelene Allinson. Keeping the grass short was just one of the important lessons Chelene and her husband Richard had to learn, when taking over the farm nearly three years ago. “We came into this with no experience in walnuts and have had to live by trial and error. We have only done two seasons and are still learning,” Chelene says. The Allinsons were not planning on becoming walnut farmers, but fell in love with the property and its character home. The privacy and size

meant plenty of opportunity for hobbies, such as Richard’s honeybees and daughter Paris’ horses. “It’s a privilege to be caretakers of this unique farm, and we would love to get in contact with the original owners who set it up, to learn more about its history,” says Chelene. “We heard they were organic growers and we’re continuing the same tradition, only using seaweed-based fertiliser.” The first season brought a few surprises and a steep learning curve for the Allinsons. “We were told that the nuts were not going to fall until May, so we went away a few days in March. When we got back, the nuts were all over the ground – we just had to grab our walnut-rollers and get started straight away!” With 120 trees, times get busy on the walnut farm during the three-month harvest season. A storm
can take down a large number of nuts at once. Drying them immediately is vital to ensure the best quality. “It’s all weather-dependent and you’ve got to be really disciplined during that time. Mowing the grass, rolling the nuts, keeping them dry and safe from rodents,” says Chelene. Most of their customers are through word of mouth, or listed in the customer book, handed down over the years by previous owners. Some customers have more unusual requests: “One local artist takes our walnut husks - she soaks them and creates a gorgeous ink!”

HUM OF THE WILD WORDS
When we catch up, it’s a stinkin’ hot afternoon and Louis is out in it, dipping honey boxes - a process using natural wax to preserve the honey frames. Born and bred in Mangawhai, Louis had ten acres to roam and run on as a kid and his cousins were neighbours along the same estuary. His father ran a local sawmill, helping to imbue in him an appreciation for hard work. Mangawhai’s air is in Louis’ blood - keeping him working outdoors, on the land, breathing it in. He has always liked jobs that have been out in nature, “One of those country calendar jobs - it’s a nice lifestyle, hard work, outdoors, you can be your own boss and go surfing when you want.” So while training as a builder around seven years back fate, it seems, stepped or rather flew in. His friend, who was a practising beekeeper,

caught Louis a swarm of his Italian bees to put into a hive and keep. When worker bees need a new queen, they nurture selected larvae in a way that triggers the development of queen morphology. Swarming is when one of these hatched queen bees leaves the original hive with a large group of worker bees to create a new colony elsewhere; a fine example of nature at work creating and flourishing! With his initial swarm of bees, Louis learned the beekeeping trade from his friend and his uncle over the next couple of years, steadily building his bee numbers and “bouncing ideas and trying stuff out, because ninety percent of the time bees do what you expect, but ten percent of the time they don’t,” he says. Louis’ first swarm’s maiden flight was about seven years ago. In 2015 he founded Mangawhai Honey and today he has 100 hives and counting - but has
no aspiration to ‘get massive’. When beekeeping small-time he says, “the bees aren’t being moved around the country from place to place getting worked hard like they do commercially.” Mangawhai Honey is authentically Mangawhai collected. Louis tends to his bees barehanded,“... socks tucked in my pants, a t-shirt, and my veil tucked into my top.” Yes, it’s certainly the cooler option during Mangawhai’s hot summer months, but this way of handling means unencumbered interaction and demands an extra level of gentleness and care. Working barehanded is also a choice which could be seen to reflect Louis’ values around being as non-commercial as possible; he gets to check on his hives personally, truly knowing what’s going on, getting to decide where and when to put

his attention as keeper. This quality of care can certainly be tasted in his excellent honey - sweet of course, and bursting with flavour. Customers can choose from a Manuka Honey or a Native Bush Blend. Each year, at this time, all the manuka flowers are in bloom and are the main focus of the bees. These manuka blocks are harvested early December and from that harvest onwards, the mixed native bush blend is produced. This year Junction Magazine and One Oh Nine came together to help one local business with our new Start Up Grant. We are excited to announce this year’s winner is Mangawhai Honey. The judges loved the story behind Mangawhai Honey, a brand that clearly represents its passion in caring for bees. They were amazed at the work happening behind the scenes: from family milled timber to being deliberate on the placement of the hives, ensuring the bees have enough flower. Junction and One Oh Nine, along with the other participating partners, are very excited to be able to help him along on that journey. www.109.co.nz www.dashper.co.nz www.origincreative.co.nz

FOREVER HOME WORDS
KATHY HUNTER | PHOTOS
Hackneyed phrases such as ‘pillars of the community’ spring to mind when writing about Robin and Simon Barclay. Not to mention ‘parklike grounds’ in connection with their Matakana home. But in this case, both are true. The couple are actively involved with Matakana’s community group, the community gardens, local events and fundraising. And their rolling lawns, fringed with oaks and poplars, are indeed reminiscent of an English estate; the trees provide seasonal splendours which nourish Simon’s British sensibilities. The couple met at Greenlane Hospital in the early eighties where Simon was a GP and Robin a cardiology technician. They’d been living on Takatu Peninsula since 1995 but in 2015 they found a property closer to Matakana which embodied everything they loved. A week later,

they’d bought it and decided to tackle their first proper build. It began in mid-2016. The existing bungalow was removed, and the landscape thoroughly reshaped. The pair drove around spotting things they liked about houses they saw, and noted cladding, rooflines, joinery and gardens. They found photos of an Australian house they loved, with deep verandahs, high ceilings and dignified cornices (a nod to their Auckland villa days). There were two distinct wings. “We wanted to be able to close one end of the house down and open it up when necessary for visitors and family,” explains Robin. They also wanted sustainability in the design: double-glazing, super-insulation and a whopping solar array on the garage. Architectural designer Martin Harmish got the job. “He was very calm and everything seemed

to happen exactly when he said it would,” she remembers, a little wonderingly. The builders – Mark Aley and his team from Outline Construction – were similarly effective. Even so, the huge build took a year from beginning to end. The interior design is unashamedly feminine. “Well, every time I asked Simon his opinion on something, he said, ‘Don’t ask me, that’s above my pay grade!’” says Robin. But her long-time friend Steve Elliston was an excellent mentor and a gifted TradeMe detective – the chandeliers were among his many finds. “I really just started with some gorgeous wallpaper,” Robin confesses, “and it kind of went on from there.” The paper featured cherry blossoms with different colourways – into the bedrooms it went. The hall is elegantly exuberant in wide Tiffany-blue and white stripes. Robin got
lucky: “I found it online for $US10 a roll!” A bunch of simple blown-glass globes by Luke Jacomb are the perfect foil to the lush collection of ceramics and glass art (Virginia Leonard, Dominic Burrell, Vicki Fanning, Liz Sharek and more) on the entrance hall tables. The huge open-plan lounge and kitchen (dubbed ‘The Great Hall’ by the builders for its airy proportions and trussed ceiling), is perfect for entertaining. But Simon and Robin were perfectly cosy over winter in the little TV snug and are looking forward to living mostly on the verandah again this summer. “The covered deck is probably my favourite feature of the house,” admits Simon. “That and the boiling water tap – instant tea! Marvellous!” Robin loves the big window-seat and the views from the bedroom. “We’ve watched the ducklings on the pond grow up this spring,” she says with a smile. But for both, the gardens (designed by internationally-renowned landscape architect Andy Hamilton, who happens to be the son of one of Robin’s oldest friends) are where they’re truly happy. When the visitors are gone, it’s the wildflowers and roses, orchard and raised veggie beds, the little potting shed, the compost heaps and happy chooks which feed their souls. Their beautiful home is just the icing on the cake.

ART
AARON MCCONCHIE WORDS
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
“It’s about trying to get people to stop and observe their surrounds, and about their interaction with the artwork,” says Aaron McConchie, artist and sculptor of Mangawhai. “I make the art I want to make and if people like it, that’s great, but I don’t mind if people hate it because a strong reaction is better than no reaction. If people are ambivalent about my work then I haven’t done my job.” Aaron’s work covers a wide range of size and medium, going from small to large, wood to metal, cardboard to plastic (only recyclable!). “I have a conceptual theme that runs through my work but I don’t have a visual theme. I work with whatever medium fits the concept and the space.” Space and surroundings are very important to Aaron, as is the relationship between artist and viewer. “I want people to look at the world around them, look at my work, and think about how they relate to that. I hold the viewer in high regard with respect to the merit of an artwork.”
Flippers
One of Aaron’s early works was making an edition of crushed Coke cans that were just plain, white plaster casts. “I inscribed my name and email address on the bottom of them so people could get in touch with me when they found them. I scattered them all over Auckland, under park benches, wherever you would find rubbish. I got about 30 emails back from that which was fun.” More recently, his work has tended towards larger, outdoor sculptures, and he has an ongoing presence at NZ Sculpture Onshore, an annual event at Devonport. “Often, you can stand on or in my work, or sit on it, that sort of thing. I made some giant flippers (as in a pinball game) for NZ Sculpture OnShore and the idea is that the viewer, in interacting with the flippers, becomes the ‘ball’ in the game. People become part of the artwork and that’s really rewarding.”
Under Over
Aaron has also had a number of works appear at the Splore Festival, his most recent being a 6.5m-tall asymmetric tent with a two-flight staircase inside. ‘“There was a little window at the top where only one person could fit which brings it back to the single person viewer which interests me.” Aaron is going to have work on show at the Owhango Summer Sculpture Show, National Park, in January. The flippers can be seen at the sculpture park at Auckland Airport, behind Butterfly Creek, and a work of Aaron’s is usually in residence at the Kaipara Sculpture Gardens. Get out there and find his work because it is provocative, interactive and fun, and Aaron wants to have a relationship with you. “Attention spans these days get shrunk down to seconds so it’s appealing to try and make people think about an artwork for a bit longer than that.”

HARBOURSIDE ESTATE - MANGAWHAI VILLAGE
Dubbed ‘Magical’ by the locals, the Mangawhai lifestyle experience is more that of a never-ending summer holiday than the day-to-day grind of commuter life. Here, in this growing township upon land previously owned by Mangawhai Tavern since 1865, resides Harbourside Estate, a successful boutique development of 24 freehold lots. Once also used as the Village’s sports field, the grounds are now more focussed upon relaxation than aerobics with a large orangery and sparkling swimming pool for residents to enjoy. That’s not to say they need to live a quiet life either with a myriad of water and land activities locally to partake in as they desire. The savvy developers employed Andrew Simpson of Wiredog Architects to create their three designs. Andrew had not only grown up in coastal New Zealand but during his internship in Japan, was strongly influenced by small spaces that did not diminish, but rather, improved quality of life. That said, the three designs available to purchasers are not tiny, the smallest at 102m2. These contemporary homes are highly energy efficient, extremely functional in their separation of living and sleeping areas and waste no space.
A reflection of the 16 varieties of 450 citrus trees that adorn common areas and subtly divide the sites from one another, each design is named after a citrus variety. There is the two-storeyed Seville, a one and a half floor Clementine and the single level Lisbon. Purchasers can choose from a variety of interior styling choices and there is also a degree of flexibility within the floor plans for owners to customise their new home to suit their lifestyle. Residents, Lou and Robyn had been fishing when I met up with them, and were busy sharing the wealth of their spoils with fellow residents. The couple bought their own Lisbon after having had a long distance relationship with the site, watching it grow from ground-break to maturity during their regular visits from Rotorua. “It was the concept that really appealed to us” says Lou. Their motorhome remains down south and they return frequently to enjoy a roadtrip for weeks at a time. “On a Saturday, we roll open the sliders, let the sunshine in and imbibe of the festive atmosphere the morning markets bring” adds Robyn. On Friday evenings the little community gather for shared platters and a drink in the orangery.
Covenants require that at least one owner on the title be over 50. All are members of the Residents Society and own a 1/24th share of the common land. In a town where waterside properties come at a premium, this easy care option is affordable with house and land packages starting at just $666,795. To investigate this estate further, Laureen and Letitia of Bayleys invite you to attend their open homes on Saturdays from 11am ‘til 12pm or to call them and book an appointment. THE KAIPARA FESTIVAL 2018 PHOTOS
LITTLE
DOVES
PHOTOGRAPHY
On Saturday 3 November, Warkworth School was proud to host the 2018 Kaipara Festival. This annual festival has been running for 27 years under the passion and guidance of Matua Richard Nahi. It provides an opportunity to celebrate Maori and Pasifika cultures through Waiata a Ringa (action songs), Haka, Poi, Moteatea (traditional chant) and Himene (hymns). Throughout the day, twenty-four cultural groups performed at this year’s festival. They travelled from all over the Kaipara and neighbouring areas. Whanau and friends were treated to very beautiful, very powerful performances and expressions of Te Ao Maori from students in early childhood, primary, and secondary schools. The kaupapa of the day was to relax, enjoy each other and soak in the culture. Local community groups provided everything you would expect in the way of food, including fry bread, mussel fritters, and chop suey. For Warkworth School this was a very rewarding experience that will certainly go down in their history books!

CREATIVE MATAKANA WORDS
KATHY
The Creative Matakana team are gearing up for what they think is their best line-up of creative workshops so far. Well-known, award-winning artists will again be tutoring in May 2019 – the likes of sculptor Jeff Thomson, writer Joe Bennett, watercolourist Bernadette Parsons and printmaker Mark Graver. There was a hugely positive response to the 2018 week, with feedback such as: “Made me feel like I could achieve everything without pressure”, and “The tutor was so open and generous with her knowledge – I just loved the whole thing!” Five-day courses in 2019 include painting and drawing with Mandy Thomsett-Taylor, wood sculpture with Louise McRae, Japanese textile art with Alysn Midgelow-Marsden, non-toxic printmaking with Mark Graver, glass etching and vitreographs (printing from etched glass) with Elizabeth McClure, iron sculpture with Jeff Thomson, writing with Joe Bennett, watercolour painting with Bernadette Parsons, oral history with Judith Fyfe

and making a Windsor chair with Richard Hare (due to popular demand this last has been extended to seven days in 2019). Short courses include three one-day knife making classes with Adam Fromholtz, and a pair of two-day ceramics workshops with Jack Tilson. But wait, there’s more! Each year there’s an extra element to Creative Matakana – 2017 featured exceptional food with renowned chefs, and 2018 brought brilliant garden designers. In 2019 there’ll be a Japanese craft and culture theme at three one-day workshops held at the beautiful home of Robin and Simon Barclay. Each day will include some element of Japanese philosophy. Sustainability and wabi sabi – the art of finding beauty and authenticity in imperfection – is an important feature. There’s a craft day with kintsugi (repairing broken ceramics with gold leaf) and furoshiki (creative wrapping with fabrics), a botanical day learning sogetsu ikebana (and special angle on Japanese floral arrangement), and a hands-on day of shibori, the art of indigo dyeing. Each day will also explore Japanese food philosophy at lunchtime, with a bento box demonstration – and sake! Extra events include opening drinks at the Vivian Gallery, Matakana, and the very special participant’s dinner which is always a great time. And most excitingly, there’ll be two full-day ‘Art and Architecture Tours’, which will visit artists and interesting homes on both coasts in our region, from Helensville to Mangawhai. These will include a delicious lunch and finish with bubbles at the Vivian. Bookings open Monday 14 January. Like the Creative Matakana Facebook page for updates!

BOXING DAY POTLUCK AT WHANGATEAU HALL
Every family has their holiday traditions, and the folk music lovers of Whangateau are no different. Every Boxing Day the community comes together to celebrate at Whangateau Hall. The evening is all about relaxing and recovering from the excesses of Christmas Day. Folks bring along a ‘white elephant’ gift to exchange, and leftovers from those huge Christmas meals to share as a potluck dinner. Musicians are encouraged to bring along an instrument and play a few numbers on stage for the gathered crowd. Piano players are also invited to tinkle the ivories on the 100 year old upright and play a song of their choice. A spontaneous Christmas Carol group singalong is not out of the question. Everyone in the area on the day, whether local or just visiting, is welcome to join in for just a gold coin donation to the Hall Society Fund.
28 January 2019, Folk Club Night. Lonely Heart String Band! Back from the USA! This will not be a regular club night, with very limited floor singer spots so that we can have a full concert experience from this magnificent band. Tickets will be on sale from December. 7:00pm, $25. 511 Leigh Road, Whangateau | www.whangateau.co.nz
The Boxing Day Potluck is the final official event of the Whangateau Folk Club. During the year the Folk Club has concerts once or twice a month, featuring touring bands from all over New Zealand and the world. The monthly folk club night also offers an opportunity for local musicians to strut their stuff before a friendly and appreciative audience in the first half open mic segment. The 2019 season will feature bluegrass, blues, folk, oldtime, country, Americana, jazz and more with bands coming from as far as The Netherlands to play at the hall. You can find information about all the upcoming concerts and sign up for the mailing list on their website.
