FULL OF HISTORY AND GRACE 121 Krippner Road, Puhoi
Tender (unless sold prior) 4pm, Thursday 20 February 2020 41 Queen Street, Warkworth
"Oakdale" homestead and 150 hectare farm, in five titles, was developed in (circa) 1900 by Charles Straka (of Puhoi's Bohemian founding families). The spacious three bedroom Kauri home was entirely renovated and restored in 2000, with classic period features on display throughout. Notably, elevated 13-foot board and batten ceilings, a converted loft, leadlight panels, and original Kauri timber floors. The farm is well sub-divided into 13 large paddocks and is well supported by an all year water supply, a good set of cattle and sheep yards, the original two-stand woolshed and a flying fox through the "large" Kauri plantation. Cherished by the same family for over 120 years, it's time to build your family legacy!

NEW & NOTED MAHURANGI BUSHFIRE APPEAL Coordinated efforts by the Mahurangi community to raise funds for Australian bushfire victims has surpassed expectations raising over $16,000 in just three weeks. A group of volunteers led by Lions Warkworth and One Warkworth organised the coordinated approach, which has involved individuals, groups, organisations and businesses from across the area. Fundraising has included collections at Matakana Markets and the Shapeshifter concert as well as cricket matches, sausage sizzles, a Give-a-Little page, a business fundraising campaign, silent auctions, quiz nights and fund-raising buckets at a number of locations. Fundraising will continue until 9 February including a charity golf tournament at Warkworth Golf Club. The goal of the organising committee is to reach $20,000, which will be an amazing effort from our small community. SONGBIRD RETREAT
THE ANIMAL SANCTUARY
SWIM MANGAWHAI
Nestled within native bush and tucked in behind Matheson Bay is Songbird Retreat, the areas latest luxury, boutique accommodation. Songbird Cottage is the first stage to open, and has been welcomed with amazing reviews from the first guests.
The Animal Sanctuary is a haven for all animals – focusing on the rehabilitation and rehoming of Battery Hens, providing a permanent home for abandoned, abused and forgotten animals and the rehabilitation and release of native birds.
Once a former potters workshop, the cottage has been lovingly restored with the comforts of home including a full kitchen, wood burner, BBQ and more.
To allow them to continue this invaluable work they urgently need assistance from the community. Volunteers are vital to the running of the Sanctuary, as are donations of supplies or monetary contributions. Loving homes for their rescued animals and battery hens are also always in demand.
New Zealand has one of the highest fatal drowning rates in the OECD. It is these statistics and identifying a community need that led to the creation of Swim Mangawhai. Passionate about life-long learning, community safety and whanau, Shane and Emma believe being competent and capable in, around and under the water are crucial life skills. Swim Mangawhai offers private and group swimming lessons for all ages, AquaFit classes and rehabilitation support all delivered in a 10m long, heated, magnesium treated pool. Taking bookings now for term one, starting in March 2020.

JOSEPH TAYLOR HOMEWARE Joseph Taylor Homeware has popped up at 126 Mangawhai Heads Road. Angela Chamberlain and her partner Wayne Bowden saw a gap in the market – took the plunge and created the homeware store, Joseph Taylor, from her son's middle names. Angela says the overwhelming response and support from the community after a few short weeks has given her the confidence to source another new and interesting range for Joseph Taylor Homeware. "We have a country coastal aesthetic and Balinese vibe," Angela says of this fast growing small community, the range will keep changing so as not to repeat some of the special pieces. Sourcing from Mexico, Morocco and Turkey are also in the plan. Angela and Wayne look forward to meeting you if you want to drop by and say hello and check the store out which is located at 126 Mangawhai Heads Road, by Gringas Mexican Caravan. 027 560 6416 angela@josephtaylor.nz

SALUTE THE SUN Yoga is a combination of stretches, breathing, meditation, and relaxation. Practising yoga daily has many physical and mental benefits, such as strengthened muscles, improved respiration, healing of injuries, increased energy and less anxiety. Tree pose: strengthens muscles in the legs.
The morning is the best time to do some yoga poses because it helps the mind and body to wake up. Here are four different yoga poses to introduce into a morning routine to start the day off feeling great.
Stand straight on the mat. Bend your left leg so that your foot rests against the inside of your right thigh. Then, press your hands together in prayer pose over your heart. Hold this pose for at least a minute. Then switch to the other leg.
Cat-cow pose: strengthens muscles in the spine, torso and neck.
Seated twist pose: strengthens muscles in the hips, knees and ankles.
On all fours, inhale a deep breath as your arch your back and look upwards. As you exhale, push away from the mat, round your spine and look downwards. Repeat this pose for several minutes.
Sitting cross-legged on the mat, tuck your left foot under your right hip and cross your right leg over your left leg. With your right hand beside your left foot and your left hand over your right knee, slowly twist your torso towards your right knee. Hold this pose for at least a minute. Then switch to the other leg.
Downward dog pose: strengthens muscles in the arms and legs. On all fours, lift your knees off the mat. Raise your tail bone in the air and straighten your arms and legs until your body resembles a triangle shape. Hold this pose for at least 30 seconds to one minute.
Adding five to ten minutes of yoga to a morning routine is a great way to feel energized and relaxed before leaving for work. It is not just exercise or meditation, but an investment in one’s physical and mental wellbeing. For more information and guidance, it is best to search for a yoga studio and a professional instructor in the area.

Ages 8-12
Ages 13-18
At this age, children are far too young to understand the concept, but they can learn mindful behaviours by watching and interacting with their caregivers. Essentially, parents should be setting an example by practising mindful behaviours themselves.
Older children should start to have an understanding of what mindfulness is and why it is good for them. One way to achieve this is for children to do exercises with their parents, such as guided meditations, yoga positions, breathing exercises and introspection.
Teen life has become a rollercoaster of emotional and physical changes. Stress levels are higher, and situations and reactions are more intricate. This is where daily activities can become sophisticated.
Toddlers should also do activities that encourage creativity and communication. They should be experiencing types of play time that highlight being in the present moment, such as colouring in books, drawing pictures, and playing games together.
Young children should also practice mindfulness on their own. As they become more independent of their caregivers, creating healthy habits and routines is fundamental to how children adjust to adolescence and its trials.
Try encouraging them to combine mindfulness with how they use technology, how they eat meals, and how they use the five senses. Actions that inspire concentration and communication should be the focus. To clear the mind and remove unnecessary distractions. It is also important for teenagers to take responsibility for their own mindfulness. Right now, they’re growing into adults, and being mindful is a choice they have to make for themselves and their own wellbeing. When children practise and prioritise mindfulness, they will gain a better sense of self and the world around them.

OPEN DAY FEBRUARY 28, 2020 - 10am to 2pm 18
Lifestyle Masterpiece Author Piper Payne observed: “There is something beautiful about a blank canvas, the nothingness of the beginning that is so simple and breathtakingly pure. Every piece begins the same, but in the end, they are all uniquely different.”
This is particularly true with the entry feature with subtle, gentle lighting and the garden feature at the end of ‘journey’ beside the front door. There are the open spaces, roominess, and use of windows and other design elements to frame country views.
Even more interesting is that in the case of this Customkit creation, the purity of the white became the dominant colour theme against which all the other creative elements came together.
“We use a variety of outside claddings, particularly board and batten, as this is in keeping with the rural environments we build in and is synonymous with the country ‘look’. In the case of this house weatherboard was used which, again, is an attractive and durable material to build with.”
White is very much part of nature’s colour palette. It captures the heart and soul of the seasons, such as pure white for summer clouds and fresh snow in winter. The house changes in character depending on the time of the day, making the transition into evening with the use of outside lighting.
For a house that is inviting, has character, but is clean, cool, modern and the ultimate ‘canvas’ for a family home Customkit provides a world of different looks and solutions.

before saving up to purchase a special item.” Rachel’s first foray into working with artisan families started with Bali. This was met with a mixture of excitement and challenges. “I’ve learnt so much in the last year from working with these families in Bali – communication is always the hardest one to get right, also shipping and delays has been one of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to work around.” Of course, the travel and experiences all make-up for the hard work and challenges that anyone experiences when starting a new business. “My absolute favourite part of the job is when you visit these families and get to see them in their everyday lives. Often the whole family, from grandparents down to little babies are all there together making it happen, all of them playing a role. I just love to be a part of this and watching them and how they operate as a family. To me it is so special to be able to support them, to keep their craft and their traditions alive.” You can read about some of the families Rachel works with on her website and get a greater insight into how small and unique these businesses are that are handcrafting their stunning goods. The aim is to keep travelling with her family and adding new countries and artisans to MMWTSS portfolio of products. “I am super excited about meeting the new families, having new adventures with my family and growing the business to have an amazing range of lifestyle products all lovingly handcrafted

society to reduce what we are throwing out - it is harder work, it is labour intensive and it costs more, but it simply has to be done.” However, extracting virgin materials is still more energy intensive. 21% less energy is required to make glass from recycled glass than it does to process from silica sands. 96% less energy is required to make aluminium from cans than from bauxite. Less energy equals less climate change, and less extraction means less biodiversity loss and resource use. More recycling... less landfill and litter. One of the recycling challenges is that different councils and organisations throughout New Zealand all recycle different materials depending on the processors and markets they can find for the recyclables. In the six months Mahurangi Wastebusters has been operating they have found processing plants to recycle 22 different types of materials ethically and sustainably. For example, tires go to Waste Management’s shredding plant in Wiri where they are ground up, the metal removed for recycling and the rubber crumbed and sent as an alternative fuel to coal at Golden Bay’s cement works in Whangarei. Household batteries go to E-Cycle Limited in Kumeu who send them offshore for recycling. Timber goes to Green Gorilla for chipping for fuel at Portland Cement and glass goes to OI Glass for making back into glass bottles. They also recycle cardboard, plastics 1 & 2, cans, mercury-filled fluorescent bulbs and tubes, laptops, monitors, mobile phones, TVs polystyrene, scrap metal and other e-waste. General rubbish and greenwaste is charged by volume and prices for disposal of recyclables vary by item with these sorted by hand so there is no risk of contamination or it ending up in landfill. This means, the more people sort their waste before dropping it off, the more they will save. Mahurangi Wastebusters is a not-for-profit employing nine staff supported by a group of passionate volunteers. Every dollar they make goes back into diverting waste from landfill and recovering resources for the benefit of the community. This year, Mahurangi Wastebusters is introducing public education tours and running workshops at the learning hub in Lawrie Road, Snell Beach along with community events in Wellsford. For advice on zero waste or enquiries about events email or check out their website. education@mahurangiwastebusters.nz www.mahurangiwastebusters.nz

With steep slopes, hand benching has been the order of the day, with hundreds of steps and numerous stream crossings, making this one of the finest areas of day walks in the country. While the Forest and Falls Tracks are steep in their upper sections the new Botanical Track follows the 100m contour and links the lower sections of these two tracks, making an easy three to four hour loop walk for families and casual walkers. For a short easy walk of waterfalls, tumbling stream, and spectacular native forest the first waterfall is only half an hour up the Falls Track, complete with swimming hole and seats it makes a wonderful walk for youngsters and oldies alike. On a hot summer's day these sheltered shady walks are a welcome relief from hot sandy beaches. The Tanekaha Track complex has been developed with voluntary labour and donations with the only outside funding coming from Walking Access New Zealand for the little swing bridge. The Trackies are continuously improving and maintaining the area and their reward is to see its increasing use by locals and visitors alike. www.mangawhaitracks.com
