PICK YOUR OWN FLOWERS AND HERBS AT SLOW BLOOMS

New & Noted

A unique new garden has opened by Charlies Gelato, where visitors can pick their own cut flowers, teas, and healing herbs. Founder Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling has drawn on her experience from similar gardens in her native Sweden, where you borrow a pair of snips and a basket, stroll through the rows of blooms, and cut your one-of-a-kind bouquet.

CHILLIBEAN KIDS CLOTHING

The name Slow Blooms is a play on the Slow Foods and Slow Flowers movement, which champions produce grown locally, in their natural season, using sustainable practices, and letting good things take time.

Chillibean is a small local 'mumtrepreneur' enterprise, crafting quality babies’ and children's boutique garments right here in Warkworth.

www.facebook.com/slowblooms www.instagram.com/slowbloomsnz

Chillibean focuses on natural textiles such as New Zealand Merino and Cotton, including certified Organic Cotton...no polyester! From premature babies to ten years old, you’ll find unique styles and fabrics unlike any in retail chains. Visit Chillibean at the Matakana Market (at the Old Creamery) on Saturdays or check out their website. Chillibean also makes to order so you can select from their garment, sizing and fabric range. info@chillibean.co.nz | www.chillibean.co.nz

Sea Salt and Smoke It’s a labour of love, an homage to a craft that has been around for years gone by. A business that has always been a part of communities traditionally, the Matakana Smokehouse fits the bill as your local spot for almost all of your seafood needs.

Michael and Sophie have been tinkering away with the Smokehouse for a little over five years now. It’s been an interesting journey with plenty of learning along the way. A real point of difference for them is who the Smokehouse align themselves with. Michael works exclusively with Akaroa Salmon, a small family-owned salmon farm that never uses antibiotics and grows the salmon as close to wild conditions as possible. The Matakana Smokehouse also work with Lee Fisheries, Tora Collective and Awatoru Wild Foods, always aiming to source their various seafoods from companies implementing sustainable practices. Another aspect of the business is contract smoking for recreational fisher people who don't have the ability to smoke their own fish, or if they have caught a larger fish that can be difficult to smoke at home with such big volume. They make a variety of different products. The well known and sought after NZ Food Awards artisan finalist Hot Smoked Salmon with Toasted Nigella seeds. A Scandinavian style cured salmon, ‘Gravlax’, where the

beetroot and kaffir lime cure is striking. Then there is the Cold Smoked Salmon with a thick vertical slice; it’s got a superb smokey hit and recently won Grand Champion at the Crater Smoke Competition in Akaroa. Michael slices all their Gravlax and cold Smoked Salmon by hand, a nod to traditional methodologies. Procuring and smoking with the seasons is where they aim to be. What the boats can catch is what they will stock. Sometimes there isn't Kahawai for a few weeks but they are landing Kingfish so that’s what the customers and restaurants they supply throughout the North island receive. It can be hard for people to get used to but that’s the reality of such a freshly sourced and made product. They smoke fresh every week so it always depends on what’s been caught as to what will be available. Sourcing fresh, sustainable seafood is a passion of the team, which we are lucky to have in our area. There are new products on the horizon too with some New Zealand native botanicals being added to the curing process, with some very distinct flavours coming through.

Also preserved Smoked Albacore Tuna and Sardines, a work in progress but hoping to be a completely New Zealand made product, from the fish caught in our waters to local award-winning olive oil. It’s bound to be a winner and is a huge change from standard supermarket canned fish. The Matakana Smokehouse is not just a Smokehouse. They supply fresh Akaroa Salmon, Lee fish fillets, Wild Aussie Prawns, New Zealand Whitebait, Fresh Fijian Yellowfin Tuna, and fresh Coromandel Scallops in season, amongst other top end specialty seafood products. With plans for a new space underway, The Matakana Smokehouse hopes to be a mainstay in our weekly if not daily lives, providing a variety of seafood straight from the boats to the community. It doesn't get much fresher or better than that and they genuinely can't wait to help you with those seafood requests. Visit their website for updates. 0204 010 7815 hello@matakanasmokehousenz.com

Growing Words Words Kathy Hunter

John Bluck watches indulgently as his elderly Jack Russell requests a tummy tickle. “You’ve got a friend for life now,” he tells me. At well over six foot, with a mane of silver hair and a shrewdly scrutinising gaze, he carries his nearly eight decades lightly – no doubt a combination of hard work in his garden and mental workouts from his prolific writing. If you listen to Radio New Zealand, you may have heard John’s podcasts. Diverse topics include gardening, his own experience of beating cancer, roads in the Kiwi identity, Māori and Pākehā relationships, the delights of a good lawn, the movies, and his childhood in 1950s Hawkes Bay. He’s written ‘about a dozen’ books too, representing a life that took him from small-town New Zealand to a global stage and back. During John’s childhood in Nuhaka, south of Gisborne, three things sustained the area’s economy: the railway, the dairy factory and Bluck’s Transport, founded by his grandfather. Instead of becoming the third generation to run the family business, John followed the paths of two of his uncles – both Anglican bishops. He studied theology and literature at the University of Canterbury, and then at graduate school in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the USA; he and his wife Liz met in a New York hospital where she was an intensive care nurse and he was chaplain. Once back in New Zealand, his career

|

continued its double strands of ministry and journalism (writing, editing and tutoring), across New Zealand. During his early years John worked with Catholics in Boston (Cardinal Cushing was inspirational), became an Anglican minister in Gisborne and edited ‘The New Zealand Methodist’ in Auckland. Later he’d add the Presbyterians to his list when he became Professor of Practical Theology and Communication at Dunedin’s Knox College. Ecumenism, the concept of promoting a unified church among all denominations of Christians, was John’s passion then and he worked as its advocate for decades. A tenyear stint as Director of Communications at the World Council of Churches in Geneva enabled him to travel the world encouraging diverse churches to work together. As Dean of Christchurch Cathedral from 1990, he achieved some major milestones, such as leading the massive campaign to fund and build the visitors centre. But he says, “Looking back, I feel a bit like Don Quixote. Chasing the dream of ecumenism which ultimately didn’t happen, pouring work into the Cathedral, which then fell down…” John laughs wryly. Becoming the 14th Anglican Bishop of Waiapu in 2002 was a welcome change of pace before retiring in 2008. A recurring motif in John’s life is pilgrimage.

“In its simplest form, pilgrimage just means going for a walk together and walking … expectantly. It’s all about crossing boundaries,” he says with a tricky smile. Whether encouraging church leaders to step outside their comfort zones, or organising trips, as Bishop, to reconnect Māori and Pākehā with their shared histories, John deems regular, boundary-pushing journeying to be healthy for all. This segues into another lifelong preoccupation (and recent podcast series): the question of how Māori and Pākehā can ever live together harmoniously. “The landscape of two cultures coexisting, overlaid with a dozen others, is fractured and more likely to erupt than Ruapehu,” he says. “But we won’t get anywhere closer to justice and mutual respect in NZ until the institutions which shape our lives reflect our diversity.” The new Labour cabinet elicits his cautious optimism. John has always adored the movies and his entertaining podcast on the subject is wellinformed by both his own filmmaker offspring and regular visits to Matakana Cinemas. But apart from standing at the pulpit monthly at St Leonard’s in Matakana village, these days he mostly gardens, walks, thinks, and writes. And we should certainly count ourselves lucky for the latter. www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/john-bluck-writes

BROWNIE

A gluten-free option for lunchboxes, afternoon tea or a treat for anyone! INGREDIENTS

• 200g brown rice flour • 250g coconut sugar

• ½ cup dark chocolate chips

BANANA PANCAKES

• 5 ½ tbsp cacao powder • 7 tbsp coconut oil

These gluten-free pancakes are great for both kids and adults! They are super tasty and they go well in my kids’ lunchboxes.

• 1 tsp baking soda

INGREDIENTS

• Pinch of sea salt

• 2 free range eggs

• 4 tbsp tahini, I use unhulled • 200ml almond milk • 1 tsp baking powder

• 2 very ripe bananas • ½ cup buckwheat flour

Preheat oven to 175c on fan bake.

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients- flour, coconut sugar, cacao powder, chocolate chips, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

• 1 tsp maple syrup

• 1 tsp baking powder

• Coconut oil for cooking

In a small pot, melt the coconut oil, remove from the heat. Add the tahini and almond milk and mix well. Line a 21cmx21cm baking tray with baking paper.

Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Let the batter sit for a few minutes. Heat a tablespoon of coconut oil in a pan (a cast iron pan is great). Once hot, add approx. ¼ cup of the batter per pancake. When bubbly, flip and cook on the other side.

Combine everything and pour the mixture into the tray. Cook for 30-35mins until cooked through but still a little fudgy in the middle.

Top them with a drizzle of maple syrup, a berry chia jam or some fresh berries. Or just eat them on their own!

GREEN SMOOTHIE

A brilliant way to get lots of nutrients in to your children, without all the complaining.

INGREDIENTS • 1 ripe banana

• ¾ cup frozen mango

• A good bunch of greens- spinach, kale • 2 tbsp coconut cream • ¾ cup water

Place all ingredients into a powerful blender and blitz until smooth. www.facebook.com/almawholefood www.instagram.com/almawholefood

How to Save the World, One Podcast at a Time ‘How to Save the World’ is a little podcast show punching above its weight. Co-founder, and Matakana local, Waveney Warth had the idea for the show in 2018 when friends said they wanted to live more sustainably but did not have time to find eco-brands or wade through tsunami’s of information. A long time environmental advocate, Waveney decided to create a podcast just for New Zealanders, focusing on simple, local solutions. The first step was to find a co-host, but finding the right person was not easy. She recalls, “I knew I wanted a comedian, to balance out the earnestness of it all, but I didn’t know any, and it turned out ‘the zero pay and endless hours collaborating on a project with me’ was a tough sell.” Then, at a Christmas function, she stumbled across

award winning comedian and podcast extraordinaire, Tim Batt who happened to be looking for an opportunity to “do something positive” for the planet. The two teamed up and it’s a combination that seems to be working. Despite the potentially heavy subject matter, reviewers call the show “warm” and “inspiring”.

later, the show has a small team of dedicated

Topics range widely from clothing to pets to banking. Episodes run from 45 to 60 mins and always aim to connect people with their power to make a difference. Waveney cannot emphasize this enough, “we don’t talk about things we can’t do anything about, we just zero in on the huge impact of all the changes we can make – big or small, it all counts.” It is a theme that has struck a chord. Now in its second season, and 45,000 down loads

Back to Nature Mangawhai Nature School had been on the wish list for founders Lou and Daniel Forward for a long time, and the catalyst to make that dream a reality came in the form of lockdown in March last year. After months of hard work Mangawhai Nature School opened, providing the perfect place for Primary/ Intermediate aged children to learn, explore, connect and grow amongst the beautiful New Zealand environment. Mangawhai Nature School (MNS) is a “one day a week” school, meaning children attend their current school four days a week and can obtain permission to attend the Nature School one day a week on a regular basis. Best of both worlds! They also run a holiday program during the school holidays. Located on a magical rural property in Mangawhai and run by a team of passionate qualified educators, they encourage curiosity, creativity, and the confidence to

explore learning through a different lens with their nature-based approach.

The team at Mangawhai Nature School believe in a collaborative approach to Education.

Learning amongst nature enables many skills to develop including patience, empathy, curiosity, creativity, initiative, bravery, risk management, critical thinking, spatial awareness, dexterity, improved strength, a sense of purpose beyond yourself, responsibility, emotional resilience, decreased anxiety, improved ability to concentrate and most importantly fun! Learning amongst nature gives MNS students the space and freedom to explore their take on things, with guided activities and multiple solutions.

They are very grateful to have great relationships with the local schools and are continuously liaising to ensure they deliver a positive and collaborative education experience.

Mangawhai Nature School has four amazing and highly experienced Educators: Maree Stewart, Chris Rhodes, Susi Schroeder and Cara Sheilds. “The combined experience, skill set and energy these four Educators bring to Mangawhai Nature School is beyond what we could have wished for,” says Lou.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the amazing community support we have received,” they tell us. “We opened with one session a week and the uptake has been so positive we are now offering sessions three days a week” in order to open it up to more students. “The feedback from the students and parents has been hugely positive with some parents even saying the experience has been life changing for their kids.” Check them out of Facebook or call or email for more information. 021 0234 9108 mangawhainatureschool@gmail.com

Starting Young Building strong, happy and healthy kids is something all parents and caregivers want to achieve. But it’s hard. All kids and their families are different. We all move in our own ways and we all enjoy different environments. Some kids want to climb, some kids want to skate, others want to dance or hunt and fish and of course many want to kick, catch and shoot hoops and goals. At Fit365 they focus more on movement, body confidence and fun, and less about fitness, scores and times. If a child has knowledge of their body and is proud of being able to move it in many different ways, they will build physical strength and mobility and they will build confidence in their abilities.

This empowerment can be then transferred to any environment they choose.

Seeds of Change ‘Paheko’ is a registered Charitable Trust acting as a conduit for people wishing to return to a harmonious way of life. Its work includes reviving bio-diversity, regenerating ecosystems and strengthening community towards self-governance to increase resilience. Members are working on practical and functional living systems that are designed based on recycling and up-cycling commonly wasted resources.

The collective has established a local food project called ‘Mahinga Kai’ located north of Kaiwaka. The aim is to reinvigorate the existing garden space and grow heritage and traditional crops including Kaanga Ma (a traditional white corn), kamokamo, kūmara and Māori potatoes with a focus on seed saving. This is an example for people to see how to grow food in their own backyard and to get more hands-on experience producing food from seed to seed.

In nature, when energy is cycled, living systems grow. For example, when leaves fall from a tree, they decompose, providing nutrients and an energy source for microbes, insects and other plants. Paheko uses nature as the guide seeking to restore natural harmony.

Saving your own seed means to collect your own seeds to have at home for next season’s planting. This way you can help conserve diversity and save the traditional varieties adapted to local conditions and ensure food resiliency and quality within your own community.

What's more, some research suggests that gum disease may be associated with serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer's and heart disease, making oral care all the more important. December 27th January 3rd & 23rd February 6th & 20th March 20th

Come join us for another season of Moveable Feast Matakana, featuring some of Auckland’s best Street Food. Relaxed vibes, live music and fun for the whole family.

Off the Beaten Track 2020 was a rollercoaster for most and a challenge for many. For Damon Birchfield and Dee West, a self-proclaimed “lockdown love affair” or “covid couple” have found their combined passions for social and environmental justice have led them to a love of all things local and have big plans to learn and regenerate alongside the 50 acre plot of land they have been improving since their relationship began in 2018. “I am absolutely convinced that soil health and living simply are integral to my own health and the health of the planet,” says Dee, a former world traveller and international speaker. “New Zealand’s borders closing gave us a chance to slow down to a manageable pace, and really appreciate that we live in paradise and have an obligation to protect it.” The couple spent several weeks without internet or phone access in the off-grid

“treehouse” home that Dee and her former partner Steve West built in 2010. During their isolation at the property, Damon had to commute in their electric car to the end of the road to get cell phone reception so he could carry on working as the CEO of Ecomatters Environment Trust, based in West Auckland.

2021 will see the couple pushing ahead

“This year has been a unique opportunity for people to slow down and think about their relationships,” says Damon. “Not only our relationships with people, technology and the community, but also the planet. We were given a chance to live simply and in-tune with nature in a way that never would have happened were it not for all the chaos of 2020. The most encouraging and exciting part of this adventure was the realisation that we really like living off grid and far more simply, especially Dee who used to fly all over the place. Literally and figuratively,” Damon volunteered in good humour.

Finding Where the Wild Things Are Wild Matakana is the new go to site for all your locally made artisan food products. The Matakana Village Farmers’ Market is iconic for its amazing market vibe, delicious food and incredible artisan products - always a must visit when you are in the region. But with visitors from around New Zealand heading in each week to stock up on their favourites you may feel you miss out - so Wild Matakana was formed. Hosting over ten local stall holders and with the hopes of adding chilled products later in the year, it's your one stop shop for your market delicacies. The environmental footprint at Wild Matakana is a large part of their business ethos. All the products on the site are locally and ethically made, the majority of products are in glass packaging for easy reusing or recycling, in home compostable packaging or are working with Wild Matakana to become so. They use a CEMARS certified courier company

committed to reducing their emissions and all their orders are sent using recycled packaging with home compostable tape. One thing Wild Matakana founder Josie Jackson loves about small businesses is that they are champions at supporting other small businesses. Swiss Bliss chocolates uses locally grown honey, fruits and nuts. Puhoi River Cottage uses homegrown products from around Puhoi; Wild Rimurimu supports initiatives on the East Cape or Matakana. Beeswax Wraps uses Matakana Honey wax. Business cards and labels are locally made, with a small carbon footprint. Wild Matakana is now also the proud host of Matakana Coast Zero Waste, making access to their workshop releases, booking and payment options easier. After a sold-out workshop season in 2020 Zero Waste Matakana Coast is starting the

2021 workshop season with a goodie - New Zealand’s very own foraging guru, Peter Langlands (Google this amazing guy) will be offering four local foraging tours. In the three to four hour workshops you will be shown what is on offer in our local region for foraging, discuss everything foraging and in select workshops prepare, cook and eat your foraged finds. You can’t get much more zero waste than that! Tickets prices and more details available Monday 1 February. Sign up for the newsletter on their website www.wildmatakana.co.nz to keep up to date on new product launches, recipes and workshop releases. Keep Left Fresh thinking and fresh produce go hand-inhand at Left Fields Market Garden, in rural Waipu. Vegetables and ‘Pick Your Own’ flowers are currently grown on their quarter acre (increasing to a total growing area of a half acre) by husband and wife team, Gus and Jen Ross who grow food and flowers under a ‘No-Dig, No-Spray’ method.

The idea of establishing a small-scale market garden came about when the couple made the decision to leave their jobs and move out of Auckland to pursue a different pace of life on the land. Growing vegetables has always been a passion for green-fingered Gus who has many happy childhood memories of foraging in his grandparent’s vegetable garden in rural Hawke’s Bay. And for Jen, growing cut flowers was a natural extension and symbiotic accompaniment to the vegetable production. The couple take pride in the satisfaction they get from farming by hand (no tractors and no mechanisation) under a ‘No-dig, No-Spray’ style of market gardening. The ‘No-Dig’ method of growing was an obvious choice for the couple as Waipu Clay is the dominant soil type on their property. Under the ‘NoDig’ method, perennial weeds are killed by

smothering with tarpaulin for several weeks then, rather than digging into the ground, cardboard is laid out as a foundation (several layers thick) and garden beds are built on top of the ground using organic matter and compost. A major advantage to the ‘No-dig’ growing method is the reduced weed pressure, when soil is left undisturbed any weed seeds present will remain dormant in the soil and will not germinate. Adding organic matter and leaving the soil undisturbed (no digging) also benefits soil fertility by allowing beneficial soil microorganisms to establish their communities and feed off the soil’s organic matter. A healthy soil biome, in turn, supports plant immunity and health. The decision to grow ‘Spray Free’ was a no-brainer for the couple. Safe, traceable

and sustainable food production is of utmost importance at Left Fields where food can be eaten straight from the ground, and seasonal flowers are hand picked and enjoyed from field to vase. The couple say their ecoconscious consumers demand to know how, where, and by whom their food is grown, and in support of this, Left Fields is open to view (by appointment) and warmly welcomes visits by consumers who wish to see the gardens and learn more. Pick Your Own Flowers is also by appointment. For more information or to learn where to purchase Left Fields' produce, visit their Instagram or Facebook Pages. Sip in the Sun this NZ Rosé Day New Zealand’s sixth Rosé Day is set to colour beaches, backyards and social feeds pink on Friday 5 February, 2021 as wine lovers are celebrating one of their favourite wine holidays with Rosé picnics around the country.

What makes this style so hot right now is a multitude of styles available. Sip NZ’s founder Caro Jensen, who recently moved to Matakana wine country, says “the variety has come a long way and wine lovers can now choose from a wide variety of styles, sweetness levels and price points, with the premium Rosé category experiencing a significant increase over the years”. Rosé drinkers in New Zealand have found a taste for lighter, drier, more savoury styles such as those you would find in Provence, and Kiwi wineries are responding to consumer preferences successfully crafting Rosé wines inspired by iconic French estates. Rosé is now New Zealand’s fourth largest

wine export, having overtaken Chardonnay last year and is just a fraction behind Pinot Gris. And with the 2020 vintage offering “outstanding” examples, the sixth New Zealand Rosé Day on Friday 5 February is set to be a highlight for wine lovers. The collaborative initiative of leading Kiwi Rosé producers was established by the wine marketing company Sip NZ in 2016 as a way to educate wine lovers about the style and raise awareness of New Zealand made Rosé. Being faced with a multitude of challenges, it’s more important than ever to support local makers. The Matakana wine region is represented by two stellar examples of the pink drink in this year’s collaborative initiative. Family

winemakers Yakutin and Sculptureum’s Camille 2020 Rosé wines are set to delight sippers with their crisp and dry Provencal styles. New Zealand Rosé Day will kick-off the long weekend in the peak of summer, with pink picnics across the country’s beaches and social feeds. Caro says, “a pink picnic and glass of chilled Rosé are the perfect way to spend a Friday afternoon in our beautiful backyard.” Follow @sipnzwine on Instagram and Facebook to join in on the #nzroseday celebrations. www.sipnzwine.com www.drinkfo.com

Demand for Macadamia nuts continues to increase, partly because their high fat and low sugar content aligns with current healthy eating trends, like the keto diet, which emphasises the benefits of eating healthy fats. Macadamias are also a great inclusion in a vegan diet as a source of protein and for the ease with which they make a delicious plant milk or nut butter. ‘Nutty For You’ grow macadamias spray-free at their Waipu orchard - if you have travelled through Northland on a regular basis you can’t have missed it next to State Highway One! They are passionate about producing good food and so take great care of their macadamias at every step from the tree to the table to ensure a high-quality result that captures the unique characteristics the nut is so coveted for.

Harbourside Estate – A Coastal Community Dubbed ‘Magical’ by the locals, the Mangawhai lifestyle experience is more that of a never-ending summer holiday than the day-to-day grind of commuter life. In this growing township nestles Harbourside Estate, a successful boutique development of 24 freehold lots. Once the Village’s sports field, the grounds are now more focussed upon relaxation than athletics with a kayak launch and sparkling swimming pool for residents to enjoy. That’s not to say they must live a quiet life though with a myriad of water and land activities locally to partake in as they desire. The vibe of tranquility and care for fellow community members is palpable here. Resident Janice has a campervan and likes the occasional jaunt. Her only restriction to spending more time away is her cat. “Whilst I’m away, my wonderful neighbours ensure that ‘Squeak’ is well taken care of,” a grateful Janice comments. She hails from a Matakana lifestyle block and her desire to downsize and find a retreat with a view through Pohutukawa to the sea seemed financially out of reach. Then she discovered Harbourside. Now almost two years on, her cherished Hibiscus trees have grown,

a colourful bougainvillea coils around the pergola and out back an incredible edible garden flourishes. She loves being able to walk a few metres, drop her paddleboard into the estuary and indulge her passion for the water. Fellow residents Steve and Elena yearned for a lock up and leave with a beachy feel but it wasn’t just about the house for them, they wanted to be part of a special community. When they came upon this Estate, Elena tearfully declared “This is it.” They worked regularly abroad so as the build commenced, interior samples were mailed to them for decision making. "We had a design in mind and it was important that it be passive solar,” said Steve. The highly energy efficient and extremely functional contemporary Seville design fit the brief. Temporarily unable to continue their work overseas, they embarked on a creative outlet and now sell a variety of goods at the vibrant Saturday market, conveniently located adjacent. Lou and Robyn live just down the little cul-desac. “On a Saturday, we roll open the sliders, let the sunshine in and imbibe the festive

atmosphere the morning markets bring,” says Robyn. For those fortunate to live here, it is clear that this unique development is special to them. Time is running out to buy and share in that good fortune with just two showhomes and one section now left to view. Should you be interested in an affordable coastal lifestyle, Laureen and Letitia invite you to attend their open homes on Saturdays from 11am-12pm, or feel free to call and book a private viewing. A Peaceful Paradise Words Leah Botherway

If you told Amy Dinniss (previously Keenan) five years ago that she would be living beachfront in Algies Bay, she would never have believed you. Mind you, if you told her anything about what she had in store, she definitely wouldn’t have believed you. It took a tumultuous journey that began with a life-changing medical diagnosis and ended with not only living at a seafront property that she’s always “felt an incredible connection” with, but also a whole new outlook on life. Beach and she spent many summers bringing her young children up to spend time with their grandparents. It was on these trips that she would take some time out and run to the far end of Algies Bay and back again. At the turnaround point, she fell in love with a piece of land where she would one day design and build a light and airy family home. With a Degree in Interior Architecture from Victoria University and over 20 years' experience working as an interior designer for superyachts, Amy sketched

the plans for the house alongside Rob Early at Archidesinz. Together they came up with a spacious, light-filled home where every room has a view looking out over the Tawharanui Peninsula. What is referred to locally as the ‘Black Boat House’, the design is simple and has been built to focus entirely on the home’s surroundings. Every room has been carefully considered in order to maximise the views across the water. Whether it’s relaxing in the bath on a winter’s evening or entertaining

guests at the custom-made Brazilian Quartzite kitchen bench, every one of Amy’s favourite spaces in the house comes down to that magical view, “I love that it’s tidal so the view is constantly changing,” Amy says. Focusing on simple, classic design throughout, the tongue and groove detailing and extra high ceilings offer character to what are otherwise basic spaces. Every aspect of the home has been designed to be both timeless and soft with a natural palette that makes you feel relaxed from the moment you walk through the front door. “There is something quite magical about the location and the spaces. I watch people do an ‘outbreath’ as they walk in,” says Amy. Throughout the home, there are small, tasteful nods to the surroundings - be it an antique, nautical map of the local area or the ship porthole mirror in the en-suite bathroom, which cleverly doubles as a laundry chute. Amy’s personal brief wasn’t just to create a beautiful, relaxing home, but due to her health at the time so many other aspects needed to be considered. “The building materials and finishings had to be carefully selected for minimal chemical exposure and off-gassing,” says Amy. One of the symptoms of Amy’s diagnosis was sensitivity to sound and therefore the master bedroom was built with this in mind so she would always have her own peaceful area to retreat to. Amy is now a picture of health with an infectious, positive attitude to life and what it throws at you along the way. She is now back growing her interior design business, Amy Dinniss Interiors, and, looking for a new property in the area to create what I’m sure will be a carefully and beautifully designed home that represents a new chapter of life. www.amydinniss.co.nz archidesignmail@gmail.com

The Real Good Life In September 2018, Dave and Myfanwy along with their boys, Mason and Nate, brought 2.5 acres of volcanic soil in Mangawhai. The dream for their family was to have more space for the kids to grow up and grow as much of their own produce as possible.

“The land was an old avocado orchard which had been subdivided, “ says Myfanwy. “When we looked at the subdivision there where only a few sites left and the site we bought had over 50 avocado trees that needed a lot of TLC along with other tropical fruit which included bananas, cherimoya, pawpaws and heritage peaches. Having grown up in the far north on a lifestyle block, as soon as I saw the land and what was growing there I knew it was special. So we sold our house in town and started to plan our build.”

Because the section used most of their budget up, they knew that the build had to be small and simple. “We sat down one night and sketched out our house plan with everything we had to have: three bedrooms, one bathroom, a single garage and a large outdoor area were all a must.”

to finish it, and have quality furnishings and fittings.” The house is 143m 2 with a 33m 2 covered outdoor area. “Most of our summer is spent eating outside, the kids share a room and have bunks, and the spare room doubles as a media room with the TV in the wardrobe, which can be closed off when we have guests.” Once they had moved in they started landscaping around the house. “We put in a 50m x 10m vegetable garden and chicken run. We have also replanted 25 of our avocados along with lots of new fruit trees including citrus, apples, peaches, nectarines, pear, guava, feijoa, tamarillo, jaboticaba and hundreds of natives around our boundary." “In our vege garden we grow a mixture of vegetables and cut flowers for ourselves and any extra produce we have (along with our avocados) we sell.” The house, garden and land is a constant work in process for the couple and they do a lot of the work themselves. “We are enjoying having some space for our kids to grow up and living a semi self-sufficient lifestyle. Our little 2.5 acres really is a little slice of paradise.” If you want to sample some of their produce you can find it outside of the fishing and tackle shop ‘Top Catch’ at 8 Wood Street, Mangawhai, or find them on Facebook or Instagram. www.facebook.com/Orchard-LaneProduce-114022700453815 www.instagram.com/buildingonabudget18

In Person - The Art Of Ilya Volykhine Words Rebecka Bjelfestam Keeling

A new art exhibition by internationally renowned artist Ilya Volykhine is opening on 10 February at Omaha Bay Vineyard Gallery on Takatu Road. Ilya describes his work as poignant as well as darkly comic. “My narratives are loose, playful and chaotic. The characters are battling their way through the anxieties and joys of life,” he says. Ilya was born in 1967 in the Soviet Union and was only 20 when he left for New York City. His childhood and formative years were spent within the confines of the communist regime, with little exposure to the discourses of the west. Self-taught by studying the old school of Socialist Realist painters at The Hermitage, Volykhine started to work through various stylistic changes in his art immediately upon arriving in New York, finally embracing a distinctly figurative approach to his work. “The best advice given to me as an artist was

never to compromise and try to please the art market,” Ilya says. “Always paint for yourself and directly from your own soul.” He works from his studio and home in Devonport, where he also has a gallery. “I am three minutes from the beautiful North Shore beaches - I love using the ocean to clear my head and relax,” Ilya says. His preferred materials to work with are oil paint, oil sticks, charcoal, India inks, liquid graphite, and paper collage. Tools include scrapers, palette knives, panel, canvas, linen, and Hahnemuhle paper. “I am an artist all of the time. I’m in my studio over 40 hours a week, day or night,” says Ilya, whose favourite contemporary artists are Colin McCahon, Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele and Francesco Clemente. “I usually have music on when I work,” Ilya says. “Sometimes I want to hear it in my studio and other times I’m working in headphones.

Ilya has been a professional artist since 1995 and lived and exhibited in New York City, Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, Maui and Tallinn. He is currently represented at Artbay Gallery in Queenstown, Gallery De Novo in Dunedin, Singulart in France, Saatchi Art in USA and Art Sleuth in Hong Kong. He became a citizen of New Zealand in 2020, and considers it his home. When not in the studio, Ilya can be found trying his balance on the slackline or staring at the sky. The upcoming exhibition at the OBV Gallery, 169 Takatu Road, Matakana runs from 1028 February, with the opening reception on Tuesday 9 February from 5-7.30pm. Celebrating Mangawhai’s Pohutukawas Wendy Leach is feeling elated. This year she has been painting the pohutukawa trees along Mangawhai ocean beach and will show her paintings in a joint exhibition ‘Full Circle’ which opens in Mangawhai Artists Gallery at Anniversary Weekend. Wendy is a Mangawhai artist who has had 21 solo exhibitions over her career including an exhibition of Jordanian landscapes in Amman in 2004. “I was originally very wellknown for my landscape paintings but in 2005 I realised I wasn’t challenging myself, so I stopped painting landscapes and decided to undertake study for a Master of Fine Arts degree. It was a big step into the unknown and really was a leap of faith. Keeping an open mind and the desire to push my boundaries I have been on an adventure into abstract painting. For an artist who could only paint realistically, developing this ability to work in the abstract is one of my best achievements. But I do embrace the cyclical nature of life and this year I have come a full circle and found I was ready to paint landscapes again, and I am loving it. Hence why the exhibition’s title ‘Full Circle’ is so appropriate.” Wendy says last year she was exploring “abstract imagery around elements of land

and sea, coastal estuaries, tidal flow and rivers”. This has led her to look at the point where the land and the sea meet - the ‘edge’ and at that edge there are pohutukawa trees. Wendy has always been drawn to the trees on Mangawhai beach and has painted them in the past. These pohutukawas on the coastline seemed like the logical place to start painting and Wendy was interested to see where this would take her. “The amazing thing is it hasn’t led me anywhere else; I am enjoying this so much I have focused on the strong dramatic forms of the trees with the changing light and the dramatic skies on the same stretch of beach and that’s the whole exhibition.” The deliberate break from landscape has had a very positive effect, and Wendy feels her new landscape paintings are more dynamic and accomplished than her earlier landscapes. These paintings are not only about trees. Wendy explores complementary opposites in nature – like shadow and light,

rest and movement, turbulence and calm, balance and imbalance, north and south, warm and cool, dark and bright. If you are expecting lots of red pohutukawa flowers, Wendy says you’ll be disappointed. She has deliberately featured winter trees. The paintings show the drama and majesty of the trees and the changeable nature of the sky and the light. ‘Full Circle’ with Wendy Leach (oil paintings) and Nicola Everett (Installation) opens at Mangawhai Artists Gallery at 6pm on Friday 29 January. The gallery is open every day from 10am until 3pm through both Anniversary and Waitangi Weekends, closing on 10 February. Wendy’s full exhibition will be on her website from 30 January and artworks can be purchased online – www.wendyleach.com Contact Wendy at www.wendyleach.com/contact-me ADVERTORIAL

Art in the Blender A Kiwi artist with Dutch roots, Christine den Hartogh has a background in black and white documentary photography, but her move to the New Zealand countryside has inspired her to incorporate other artforms, using natural materials across the board. Words Bart Peters

Originally from the Netherlands, Christine (founder of Chrissies Eye and Kohanga.art) attended the Rotterdam Art Academy and the Amsterdam Academy for Photography specialising in documentary photography and photojournalism. She worked primarily as a photojournalist, but her real passion was shooting social documentaries. This passion took her to places like the Australian Outback, Indonesia, Spain and Korea. She also spent six weeks on the back of an old truck travelling through Western African countries, such as Mali, to capture daily life.

Christine was inspired by the work of influential socially engaged photographers, such as Sebastião Salgado, Dorothea Lange and Margaret Bourke-White. In her documentaries she aims to capture the lives of people that – by choice or circumstances – would be considered outcasts by mainstream society. From young delinquents in prison to an old whipmaker and a man living in a house made of oil drums in the Australian Outback. Her many travels and wanderlust led Christine to contemplate leaving the Netherlands and settling in a different

A Natural Talent: Brett Sutherland As a self taught bone carver, Brett Sutherland has travelled far and wide, coming into contact with many fascinating tribal people. Starting out at just 16 years old, his first carvings were bone pendants and he eventually graduated to netsuke (miniature sculptures) using fossilised Woolly Mammoth ivory, after a motorcycle trip to Alaska. “I spent time carving alongside traditional native American and Canadian carvers inspiring me to carve my own totem pole or 'Pou' one day.” Brett realised that birds hold a significance as our most important living Taonga in Aotearoa. Standing at a towering 3.3 metres tall and carved in Totara, Brett started this latest Pou during the first lockdown after first carving a maquette (or small model) as a

reference. “This Pou is titled 'Native Coastal Bird Totem' and depicts six of our local Mangawhai birds seen from top to bottom: Fairy tern, Kingfisher, Oyster Catcher, White Faced Heron, Pied Shag and Spoonbill.” Having worked in the film industry on and off for many years either sculpting or making costumes and armour, Brett preferred to spend his time carving his own designs. “After getting a zoology degree, I travelled extensively and during this time I built a catamaran in Brazil and sailed it to the Caribbean where I began to carve full time.” Brett can turn his hand to any practical task that presents itself and is up for the challenge. In 2013 he returned home to New Zealand, built a tiny house and lived in it for seven years whilst saving to buy a plot of

land. “Now I'm happily living in a cabin just outside of Mangawhai, planting trees and a veggie garden. I hope to one day build a funky earth house.” Looking to the future Brett has plans to carve a set of three totems consisting of commonly seen, endangered and extinct birds. Each totem will be up to six metres tall and will have a very large presence - ideal as a public sculpture. “I'm open to discussing with interested clients about the possibility of commissioned works. Any totem can be custom designed to include native birds of any localised area in New Zealand.” Examples of his netsuke and other artworks can be viewed on his website www.skinbonestone.com

Educating Gender Intelligent Relationships ‘Love Coach’ Adriane Hartigan-von Strauch calls the clients she attracts “Lovers in Transit”, as they usually discover and connect with her at life-changing cross points. Seeking to love again and to re-establish a deeper and more fulfilling bond with their existing or new partner. The core group are females and males in their forties, fifties and sixties, overcoming failed marriages and love relationships which consequently have imprinted unwanted and unresourceful outcomes - by not feeling worthy, not desired or betrayed and abandoned by ex-partners. Educating ‘Lovers’ in consciously designing and reinventing their love lives is a highly creative and rewarding profession. Adriane quotes her American business mentor and colleague Dr John Gray, the famous author of ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’: “The real heroes of our time are not those who go to war and fight for their countries. The real heroes of our time are those men and women who make

a whole-hearted commitment to their life partners and home lives – and learn how to stay happily together in monogamous long-term or agreement-based seasonal relationships - beyond ‘honeymoon phase’ and ‘marriage crises’!” As gender-intelligent partnering and communication are not taught by our parents or in schools, open minded singles and couples are invited to expand their skill set within a living experience of intimate connections to those one chooses to love. John Gray’s latest book ‘Beyond Mars and Venus’ is a 21st century relationship developmental testament of a 28-year conscious evolution observed since his first bestseller – a book Adriane highly recommends. Ultimately ‘Mars and Venus’ stays as a metaphor for acknowledging that men’s and women’s wants and needs in life and love by nature are very contrary – yet absolutely complementing. Being accredited and licensed as NZ’s only ‘Mars Venus Coach’ Adriane offers ‘Mars

Venus Love, Life and Business Coaching’ as well as her very own originally developed style as ‘Quantum Love Coach’ - in private, retreat and live seminar settings. In her role as trained Matchmaker, Adriane is in the process to launch a global online platform called, ‘The Master Matchmakers’ - offering relationship mastermind events both live and online. Singles and Lovers of Life are invited to join Adriane’s ‘Soulmate Dating Dinners’ - held in Auckland and Matakana. 027 317 0017 | info@lovecoach.co.nz

Ride to Remember Mike Axford, Brett Walker, Judy Thwigg, Tony Dromgool, Andrija Jorvat, Jess Watson, Destry Morgan, Sally Fields, Bella Chappell and Christine Palmer. These are the names of the people Forrest Axford is riding to remember, as well as anyone else who has lost their life to suicide. On Friday 26 February, Forrest Axford, a 22 year old Mahurangi local, will be embarking on Tour Aotearoa; a 3000km bikepacking odyssey staring at the top of the North Island in Cape Reinga, and finishing at the bottom of the South Island in Bluff. He is riding and fundraising for suicide prevention and bereavement initiatives to be facilitated by locally run Healing Through Arts Trust, and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. "This isn’t just my story, it’s all of ours. We all at least know someone, or who knows someone who has died by suicide… and unfortunately, for many of us, the degree of proximity is a little closer. Whether it be a friend, a parent, a sibling, or a colleague,

so many of us have lost people who felt they were lost and couldn’t be found. My uncle died by suicide before I was born, handing down a legacy of grief that changed who I was to become. Since then, I have lost many others, and watched those I love lose people too."

mentality that has people suffer in silence and then eventually die in it.”

In 2019, we lost 654 Kiwis to suicide, which was the highest number recorded since the records began. This statistic really hit home with Forrest.

To donate and help Forrest reach his goal, please visit givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/rideto-remember or head to Coconut Gallery in Matakana and purchase a painting (100% of proceeds go to this project). You can also follow his journey on Facebook and Instagram.

Made in Our Backyard Words Brenda Yoxall

The Covid pandemic and the resulting lockdowns meant that many of us had a go at things that we would otherwise not have attempted. Some of us baked bread, cut our own hair and had a go at various craft and D.I.Y. projects. Online shopping increased in popularity as we scrambled to buy items that we absolutely could not manage without. This caused people at Warkworth Museum to reflect on life in this area before all-weather roads meant easy access to goods and before the internet and regular international transport opened up a world of affordable mass-produced consumer goods. In the past many items were handmade or made locally and examples held in the Museum’s collection are evidence of this. The 1930’s depression made it necessary to reuse many items, such as cotton flour bags. These were often used to make

clothing, especially undergarments, which would have otherwise been beyond a family’s financial means. This led to a tradition of women using their imagination and skills to provide for their family, such as a beautifully knitted bedspread or a crocheted wedding dress. They were also encouraged to enter competitions at the local A.& P. show. In its “Made Out of Flour Bags Division” Joy-Margaret Algie successfully displayed matching sunhat and slippers. This talented woman also won a prize for her slag bag blanket and at a time when paid employment for married women was scarce the prize money was no doubt put to good use. The men were equally resourceful. Golf had just been introduced to Warkworth in the early 1900s and the necessary equipment was hard to come by, so many made their

own golf clubs which were well used during local informal competitions. What could you do to equip yourself with a golf bag? Easy, get one made from the skin of the eel you had just caught. Beautiful furniture items were also produced. Items made by Willie Hamilton show enviable talent but one stands out. This is an aeolian harp made about 1912, which was designed to fit in one of their sash windows so that it played as the breeze drifted across the strings. All of these items and many more, each with their own stories, are on display at Warkworth Museum as part of their current featured exhibition “Made in Our Backyard.” Follow them on Instagram or Facebook for updates and news. www.warkworthmuseum.co.nz www.instagram.com/warkworthmuseum

The first Sunday of 2021 saw the picturesque coastlines of Mangawhai to Waipu lined with classic cars, hot rods and motorbikes for the 15th Annual Black Swamp Run. Almost 200 vehicles were on display to the public at Mangawhai Domain then cruised to Waipu. They then returned via Mangawhai Heads to Black Swamp Road Olive Grown where people threw out picnic blankets for an afternoon of fun catching up with old friends and listening to live music by Slickback Rockabilly. The Run changed their date from the first Saturday to not clash with the Mangawhai Gala and they were rewarded with perfect driving conditions. Over $400 was raised for Otamatea High School via gold coin donations at Mangawhai Domain. Paparoa Lions Club hosted their own fundraiser by providing hot food and cold drinks at Black Swamp.

The 10th Annual Mangawhai Bowl Jam 2021 Words Leah Botherway

|

Photos Ben Loader + Kingsley Attwood

The Mangawhai Bowl Jam is back again this Waitangi Weekend at the Mangawhai Activity Zone. The Bowl Jam is a major annual event on not only the local Mangawhai social calendar but the international skateboarding calendar. Now in its 10th year running, the Mangawhai Bowl Jam is New Zealand’s largest skateboarding event and with it brings some of our top skaters to the popular coastal town to compete across four different divisions U16s, Women’s, Opens and Masters. 2020 brought a record crowd of over 2,000 people throughout the day, and 2021 is looking to be even bigger. It is often the crowd that creates the atmosphere and the atmosphere ultimately that makes an event,

and this crowd definitely doesn't disappoint they’re a vocal bunch made up of supportive locals, families and die-hard skateboard fans from around the country. They bring with them camaraderie and support which has given this event the reputation of being one of the most positive and inclusive skateboarding competitions in New Zealand. Jesse Peters is the man behind the day and has been since it first started back in 2011. “This year is about celebrating how far we’ve come in the last 10 years”, says Jesse. “We’ve gone from a micro event to the largest skateboarding event in the country”. Jesse has spent the last 12 months working alongside sponsors and the team at Mangawhai Activity Zone to ensure that the

10th Anniversary is another outstanding event that “focuses on growing our local skating talent”. There will be catering provided by local food trucks and increased grandstand seating thanks to the team at Absolute Scaffolding. “The event has always been about bringing people together and after the year that we’ve had we just want to focus on celebrating that”, says Jesse. The Mangawhai Bowl Jam is a free, all-ages event held at the Mangawhai Activity Zone on Molesworth Drive. Gates open at 10:30am on Saturday, 6 February 2021. www.facebook.com/themangawhaibowljam www.instagram.com/themangawhaibowljam

HAPPENINGS

No Waitangi Day is complete without a traditionally prepared Hangi but be quick as they sold out early last year...and the local beer, wine and gourmet Leigh fish burgers are not to be missed! Stay for the day and enjoy the live music including Andy Richards, Dirty Hippies and loads more. Famous for their Seafood Quick Fire raffles and the silent auctions this year will not disappoint with products from numerous local businesses and products from Leigh local Trelise Cooper which include a picnic blanket, pet bowl and raincoats. Event Organiser Keria Fenton said Leigh School are always grateful for the love and support they receive from the generous local business owners, and after such a tough year their donations mean more than ever, “This event wouldn’t be happening without them.” The Leigh Summer Festival is Leigh School’s main fundraiser and helps to provide funds for school upgrades and projects during the year. Please come and support the Leigh School whanau while having the perfect Summers Day. 10am-5pm, Saturday 6 February. Leigh School, Hauraki Road, Leigh www.facebook.com/leighsummerfestival

Happenings ‘FULL CIRCLE’ NICOLA EVERETT AND WENDY LEACH

Blood On Vines - First in The Matakana Series

Visit Mangawhai to view this exhibition featuring these two significant Mangawhai artists. Nicola Everett is exhibiting an Installation, “Full Circle”, consisting of 25 painted panels. Wendy Leach’s paintings feature the strong majestic forms of the pohutukawa trees, the light and the dramatic elements of wind and sky on Mangawhai ocean beach. The exhibition will be open over both Anniversary Weekend and Waitangi Weekend, every day 10am-3pm until 10 February. Exhibition opens Friday 29 January at 6pm. Mangawhai Artists’ Gallery, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai (almost opposite Bennetts Café and Chocolate Factory). www.wendyleach.com www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz/nicola-everett.html

Four friends, a shared past, a common enemy. In New Zealand’s Martinborough, an ex-wine maker dies at the hands of an unknown assailant. The planning, execution and pure enjoyment sets in motion a series of vile attacks. Meanwhile north of Auckland, the long, hot summer is over and the tourists have left the Matakana wine country. A tranquil atmosphere descends and warm autumnal winds sweep across the grape-laden valleys. With the harvest due, grapes sit bursting upon the manicured vines awaiting the pick. Within this vista of peace, a rampage of death is about to rock the local community to its core. Will it be their shared history that sees the four friends being picked off one-by-one? Author of Blood on the Vines, Madeleine Eskedahl was born and raised in Sweden on the beautiful island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. She moved to New Zealand in the early nineties and is now married with two daughters. “The crime thriller lurking inside me has always sought the perfect setting. The inspiration for the ‘Matakana Series’ burst into being over the last few years. Since the children were small, we have escaped to our slice of paradise in beautiful Matheson Bay. The area has it all; the local people, a rich amalgam of artisans, entrepreneurs, wine makers, creatives and proud, hardworking locals with magical community spirit.” “An integral character of the book is the stunning scenery, breathtaking coastline and proximity to our largest city. These elements combine to deliver up an environment rich in motive, opportunity and the means to trigger a series of gripping crime novels.”

EVERYONE PLAYS TAG! That’s the consensus of kids and adults alike if the growth of the sport in the area is anything to go by. Providing a rare opportunity, Northland Stingrays Tag and Tomarata Tag have organised a day of fun, family and most importantly Tag to acknowledge Manning, a guy who absolutely loved the game. The family orientated annual tournament held at the Tomarata Rugby Club on Saturday 13 February and will have combined teams of kids and adults take the field to compete for the Manning Smith Memorial Trophy. If you are interested in putting in a team, please email northlandstingraystag@gmail.com for more information. Michelle Keast 027 244 1753 | Kyle Robinson 021 934 723

A great majority of the book has been written from their bach in Matheson Bay - itself a treasure of local history. Her thriller, ‘Blood on Vines’ is the first instalment in ‘The Matakana Series’ and will be out in March 2021. The second book in the series, ‘Rings on Water’ is underway. Follow her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @madeleineeskedahlauthor. Blood on Vines will be launched at The Vintry Matakana, and supported by Matakana Village Books, on Sunday 21 March at 3pm. RSVP via email to join her for a celebratory glass of wine and some delicious nibbles. madeleineeskedahlauthor@gmail.com www.madeleineeskedahl.com REVIEW

The Creating with Kauri Maker Series No.2 Jewellery exhibition is about to close after a successful summer season at The Kauri Museum. Leading contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand jewellers were challenged to create wearable pieces using raw kauri materials. The resulting exhibition brought together 29 practitioners who created 98 pieces of outstanding work. Jacqueline Morren’s ring, above, is one of 15 works she created for the exhibition, each reflects her ethical silversmith practice. The ring is evocative of the kauri swamp and mangrove shoots. The exhibition closes at the end of February so this will be your final chance to catch the exhibition. The works are for sale, as is the accompanying exhibition catalogue. Don’t miss it! There is always something new to discover at The Kauri Museum.
