MOTO BENZINA WORDS
The old brewery building at the Leigh Sawmill café now houses completely different kinds of steel and chrome, and the fragrance in the air has changed a bit too. It’s a motorcycle workshop owned by locals Tim Stewart and Adam Lane, and they’ve called it Moto Benzina. Tim Stewart’s impressive background is wellknown in the industry, but not so much outside it. As Kiwi motorcycle racing icon John Britten’s right-hand mechanic he spent years on tracks in the USA and Europe – but it all began with riding motocross on the family farm in Whangarei, aged eight. “I liked riding motocross, but I was better at tinkering with the motors,” Tim says. He left school at 15 and served an engine mechanic apprenticeship, but soon began road-racing in Auckland, paying the bills as a bike courier. “My first bike was a Ducati 750; it was crap for

racing. I flogged it and bought a Honda RS250 Privateer... that wasn’t bad.” Tim got to third place in the National Series but in 1988 he met his neighbour in Parnell, Loren Poole, who was also racing bikes – alongside John Britten. Tim worked on a Kawasaki for Loren that went well and John, who’d been cobbling together his own bike, eventually hired Tim, who moved to Christchurch in 1991. “The bike John wanted to build had a girder system instead of front forks, the back shocks were in front of the engine, and the radiator was under the seat,” says Tim. “The first bike was a piece of shit, but eventually we started winning. The Japanese and Italians noticed and so did the World Press.” The 1991 Daytona ‘Battle of the Twins’ was a ‘eureka’ moment, so they gave the Isle of Man TT a shot, but it was a disaster. The bikes never finished a race and to everyone’s horror, a rider
was killed. But victory was nigh for the Britten team: they won the NZ Superbike Championship and in ’95 they finished first and second in the BEARS (British European American Racing SERIES) in Milan. John watched the race from his hospital bed where, tragically, he was battling inoperable cancer. Tim got back to NZ the day John Britten died. He was only 45. Speaking recently in a memorial video, Tim said, “John taught me that there was always a way around any problem. I learned more from him about life than he ever taught me about motorcycles.” By 1997 Tim was employed by Bill Buckley, a part-time bike enthusiast who made machinery which created particle accelerators for producing computer chips. Tim built a bike for him, took it to France for the Grand Prix circuit – and stayed there for several years.
Eventually back in New Zealand around 2010, he began working on Ducatis at the renowned Haldane Motorcycles in Mt Eden. But Tim had some big family problems. Denied access to his children, he was immersed in the family courts and in his own words, “the wheels fell off”. However, in 2012 he was introduced to Graeme Crosby and spent the next few years working with the Kiwi racing legend in his Matakana workshop. They restored Kawasakis and built one-off race replica bikes for global clients. A couple of years ago, Tim got together with Louise McRae, a well-known local artist. Together they’ve built a ‘big black shed’ in Pakiri, which was to house Tim’s new workshop. “But – oops! I’ve taken it over!” Louise laughs. The Leigh Sawmill had the perfect solution, and Moto Benzina set up shop at the much-loved music venue in 2017. The garage covers everything from servicing to import and compliance, parts fabrication to track support. Tim and his business partner Adam Lane are looking forward to fulfilling Moto Benzina’s motto of ‘Repair, Restore, Ride, Race’. Adam joined Tim from Matakana’s Mortimer Motorsports, where he spent over four years both as a mechanic and sorting logistics. His father and brother are also mechanics, so as Adam says, “spinning spanners is in the blood”. But when a new baby daughter arrived, the motorsport travel commitments proved too hard, and this partnership has been a great outcome for him. The John Britten biography says of Tim Stewart: “He’s a gifted mechanic with an almost intuitive touch for finding hidden horsepower.” Tim laughs at this. “Well, we’re restoring a lot of Ducatis right now; we’re also building engines for Speedway, and I’m still involved in racing. We’re looking forward to developing the custom side of the business. And yeah – I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve.” www.motobenzina.co.nz

THE GREEN KEEPER – AARON MCCONCHIE WORDS
Transparency, is all Aaron McConchie is asking for. As Chair of “Save Te Arai”, Aaron is frustrated by the lack of trust that has developed between the community of Te Arai, Auckland Council and Te Arai North Limited (T.A.N.L.), who is the developer behind the Tara Iti golf course and the associated housing project. “When Auckland Council is prepared to repeatedly grant resource consents, without public notification, for work on public land, and without any specific management plan, there is no trust.” “Save Te Arai” formed in 2016 in response to an application by T.A.N.L. to move a public car park

at the end of Pacific Road (off Black Swamp Road) inland approximately 450m. While that application has stalled for now, another non-notified resource consent was issued by Auckland Council allowing the developer to start moving sand as part of the proposed realignment of the accessway. Aaron says, “The council backs them by granting these applications, against the wishes of the local community and without public notification”.
community and for generations that follow,” explained Aaron.
Pacific Road is the only other access to Te Arai Beach between Te Arai Point and Mangawhai and is part of the Te Araroa Trail. “We just want to future-proof this access for the current
While the retrospective resource consent is still being fought over, Save Te Arai was astounded to discover that the developer subsequently applied for, and was granted, resource consent for a 30m

“Save Te Arai” clashed with T.A.N.L. last year over raising an existing ford across the Te Arai stream to create a dam, facilitating the removal of water for use at the Tara Iti golf course. Having built the dam in public land, without consent, the Council served a notice on the developers to either remove it or apply for retrospective resource consent.

long concrete vehicular bridge, 10m upstream from the dam. “Three government departments, local or central, have been usurped by a private developer without any penalty at this stage. This is inside public reserve land and, yet again, there was no public notification of the application” Aaron said. There is a ray of light as Aaron explains. “There has never been any holistic overview of the area and its issues. This is why we have some hopes for the beginning of the Regional Park Management Plan which Council initiated just before Christmas.”
The area including north Te Arai, Te Arai point and south Te Arai have a range of reserve areas, designations and uses that require rethinking, reorganising and formalising and that is why the process to formulate an official management plan has begun. “Save Te Arai” will be submitting to the first stage of the consultation, which closed 26 January 2018, and they encourage everyone who is interested to get involved. There will be ongoing consultation over 2018 and beyond, so there is ample opportunity to contribute. I asked Aaron what his hopes were for the future. “The ideal situation is that the developers present
a coherent plan that states specifically what they want to do, how they intend to do it, explains the impacts, what is occurring on private and public land, and they ask what we think. We want a proper public submission process. “Save Te Arai” is concerned for what is going to happen in the block owned by the same developer to the south of Te Arai point. This is a stunning area but it needs to stay that way and not be overrun by development that is insensitive to the environment and the community. Development does not always equal progress.” www.savetearai.org.nz

KLEUR GALLERY
It all began with a few lessons in glass bead making and sculpture shortly after Inge’s youngest son started school in 2009. As a Marketing Manager looking for a unique hobby, she was instantly drawn to working with glass and its endless possibilities of shape, colour and scale.
This led to her own garden studio, followed two years later with a commercial studio in Elizabeth Street, Warkworth where she began offering classes in glass bead making, sculpture and fusing. At that point, Inge also added work for sale from other glass artists and the business proved to be an instant success.
The long-standing tradition of working with glass to produce unique pieces is sadly disappearing globally and Inge’s dream is to leave a little footprint here in Warkworth, New Zealand. To aid in preserving some of that tradition, Kleur Glass offers people the opportunity to work with the alluring art of glass.
Inge continued to work as a freelance marketing consultant while her hobby grew into a business Every day, she would come home and look forward to getting into the garage to work with molten glass, that is until her husband evicted her to make room for his classic car!
Last year, a move to Kapanui Street, which meant an expanded premises and product range. Inge says, “We specialise in local, New Zealand handcrafted glass, art and jewellery. I want to support handmade, particularly art, from the local area”.

THINK LADDER PHOTOS
‘Think ladder’, is an app launched on New Zealand Mental Health Day, devised and developed by husband and wife team Katie and Mark Gatt. It aims to help users discover and replace the unhelpful thoughts fuelled by stress, anxiety, conflict and depression, through cognitive behaviour therapy. The wooden ladder used in their social media photos are a symbol of hope: "Hope that no matter how deep a pit you may be in, rung by rung you can climb to greater heights, you can experience a greater self-awareness and develop a healthier wellbeing,” said Mark. What inspired you to start Think Ladder? As a counsellor Katie was aware of the many amazing insights and effective therapies that were

available, but also frustrated that few people were benefiting from this knowledge. In our early twenties, we attended a training course that introduced us to the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and I started dreaming up ways I could one day help to make this kind of material mainstream. I got involved in youth work and did my counselling degree, but in the end it was Mark who came up with the idea of how we could do this. At the time he was a youth worker, also frustrated with the lack of accessible self-development tools, and one day he came home and said, “Do you think we could somehow automate parts of CBT?” What is the driving force behind the app and what
do you want to achieve with it? The demand for mental health services is increasing and despite the therapeutic wisdom out there, sometimes the demand cannot be met owing to barriers of cost, transport, time, accessibility and stigma. We want to make getting help as accessible as possible. We believe that no matter the pit we find ourselves in with the right support and understanding we can climb to greater heights of wholeness and wellbeing. The app provides tools that enable people to grow in self-awareness and step out of autopilot and take control of their lives. When people’s subconscious belief systems are no longer at odds with their goals and values

they can get on with living the lives they want. Is Think Ladder relatable for everyone? It’s a tool for everyone not just people with a diagnosed ‘mental illness’ that need to be developing their mental strength. We all have to navigate our way through the emotional challenges of relationships, work, family, finances and life-purpose, and all of these demands require a range of skills. This means that we can always be learning from each other and up-skilling and growing in self-awareness. Think Ladder app available for both Android and Apple, $5. www.thinkladder.com

SMATERIA – TRANSFORM A MATERIAL AND GIVE IT NEW LIFE
Local sisters, Ros and Tracey Brown, never imagined a trip to Cambodia in 2014 would set them on the path to owning their own business, but three years later the dream has become a reality. “We were shopping in Phnom Penh (Cambodia’s capital city) when we came across this little shop called Smateria, filled with beautiful handbags and accessories” says Ros. “We were drawn in by the vibrant colours and unique designs”. Entering the shop, the sisters were blown away
by the rich colours, designs and quality displayed across the wide range of handbags, luggage and accessories. “The colours were gorgeous and the look and feel of the bags instantly grabbed our attention. We made a number of purchases and have loved the Smateria brand ever since” says Tracey. Earlier this year an opportunity came up to become the exclusive NZ distributors for Smateria. The sisters jumped at the chance. “We love everything about Smateria – the
products are Italian designed, handmade by Cambodian artisans and use repurposed and recycled source materials. Smateria has an amazing philosophy that goes beyond creating beautiful and unusual designs and has a clear mission to employ Cambodian workers in a fair and sustainable way. Employees are treated well and priority is given to the employment of women and mothers” say the sisters. “We’re very proud to be part of the global Smateria family, now available in 19 countries worldwide, and excited

VALLEY VISTA ECO-RETREAT
Valley Vista Eco Retreat is situated on 30 hectares of beautiful rolling land. Although the land was bare when owners Beth Stone and Barry Wallace first saw it three years ago, they could see the potential. After a few issues with the title, the land was purchased and development began. Beth and Barry lived first in a container which they converted to a comfortable cottage while they developed the site. They made a
philosophical decision to be off-grid for power and Integrity Solar set up the system. After some research, a bio-cycle sewage system was chosen and supplied by Natural Flow. Both of these decisions have proved to be excellent. Valley Vista Eco Retreat provides a range of accommodation from the high-end luxury Glamping unit called The Shepherds Hut, through to five tent sites and five campervan sites. Also
available is the container cottage, a caravan and a tiny B&B room. Extension plans include a B&B room in the house (a California Bungalow, moved by Poyner House Moving), a “settlers’ cottage” façade for another Glamping unit and a wedding venue based around the Shepherds Hut area. A private family camping area is a future project. www. valleyvista.co.nz

WAIPU EVOLUTION – CULTIVATING A COMMUNITY An outpouring of concern over a cuppa, spurred Tania Sumich, Dawn Fryer and Philippa Ross into forming a group they called ‘Waipu Evolution’ (WE) to help make a difference to the amount of plastic, pollution and waste of our natural resources. The women started with four other friends four months ago to make t-shirt bags and now the group has morphed into 120 members. The group used their own skills to get the ball rolling with workshops on rug making, mindfulness, sauerkraut, vegan food and natural cleaning products. Since then, other members have stepped up and shared their knowledge on essential oils, card making and most popular of all – composting. Future workshops include more vegan and composting as well as therapeutic teas, kefir and photography. The workshops are just $5 with all the money going back into the community. They are now a quarter of the way to their $2000 target to install a permanent water bottle filling station in the town to reduce the amount of plastic. Their collective enthusiasm has won them a $1000 voucher from Resene Paints in a ‘Colour Your Community’ competition with their idea to paint all the benches around the town in tartan; this unearthed a mural painter in their midst! The composting workshops have helped the local church get their community garden up and running and is now a distribution point for food bank supplies and a place where the community can share excess fruit and veg with one another. They’re currently working their way around the businesses to help reduce landfill by encouraging food outlets to convert to compostable containers and collecting soft plastics to take to Warkworth. Regular beach clean ups are on the agenda as is the possibility of a ‘She Shed.’ WE is growing organically with their roots firmly established in preserving and protecting the wellbeing of people and the planet. Together they are connecting generations and involving new residents to sustain the communal spirit that tends to dissolve as the town gets bigger and lives get busier. At its core, they want people to know they’re valued, feel they belong and have a network of like-minded people to support them. 021 243 7474

LOCAL LIVING
COSKIN The absence of water is one point of difference for a new locally-made, plant-based product. CoSkin, developed by Snells Beach resident and former research scientist, Dr Alistair Lane, combines therapeutic-grade aromatherapy oils including kanuka, frankincense, rose, lavender, geranium and jojoba. These are blended with vitamins, antioxidants, coenzyme Q10 and hyaluronic acid to create a deeply nourishing and regenerating moisturiser. He also created a sunscreen using many of these same ingredients.
RUNNING CLUB Running is fast becoming the most popular way to get fit. If you are starting from scratch or getting back into it here are some tips to help get you moving. •
From pounding the streets to off-road trail running, why not try some variations and see what suits you the most.
Alistair knew that water-based cosmetics are repelled by the skin, so he used an anhydrous gel as the base for CoSkin products to give optimal absorption and eliminate preservatives, surfactants and emulsifiers.
•
Join a running club and go! Most clubs welcome people of all abilities and ages, and if it is social you are more likely to stick with it.
After months of testing, the CoSkin sunscreen has recently been internationally certified as SPF40. “We knew it worked, but it’s great to get the go-ahead,” says Alistair’s wife Stephanie.
•
Set yourself a target and go for it: whether it be to run for five minutes and then walk for five, increasing your distances or signing up to a local running event.
•
Try introducing some technology. You may think about using a device such as a ‘Fitbit’ that monitors your activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep. Apps such as ‘Strava’, tracks the runs you have done and shows you runs that other people have been using locally.

BENEFITS OF YOGA I became drawn to yoga at a very young age and have maintained a daily practice ever since. I have been teaching Iyengar Yoga for around 24 years and practicing for around 45!! The subject is as huge as the universe and there is always more to learn. It is my art and I will always have yoga in my life. B.K.S Iyengar, or Guruji (as Iyengar Yoga practitioners affectionately called him), lived to 95 yrs old and he never stopped practicing yoga. The benefits of yoga are many, but in general people find they feel healthier, happier and freer in their bodies. Once the seed of yoga is planted in that first yoga class, the soul cries out for more. Iyengar Yoga improves flexibility, whilst strengthening the muscles, bones and joints, thus supporting general posture and alignment of the spine. Circulation is increased so improving blood flow to the cells and tissues, nourishing and strengthening the immune system, keeping infections at bay. A regular yoga practice can help the mind focus and stay calm. Join Susie at a Yogabody class, which run throughout the week from Monday to Friday. www.yogabody.co.nz 73 Smith Road, Matakana

PIT'S KITCHEN
Pitsinee Chaisarn’s reason for starting a catering business is a belief that a healthy life starts with healthy eating. She was dissatisfied about the quality of many mass-produced foods, and prefers to use mainly organic, preservative free and freerange ingredients to cater for all clients (and family members) with specific allergies. The satisfaction for Pit is the wonderful customer feedback, wordof-mouth promotion and many repeat clients. Flavour and presentation differentiate Pit’s food from others and that is what Pit’s Kitchen reputation has grown on. Pit believes food is for the eyes and soul as well as for nourishment. She is a big believer in conscious living and conscious

cooking and has been practising living plastic-free (as much as possible) for some time now. After growing up in northern Thailand, Pit studied advertising and languages in Bangkok before training with United Airlines in Chicago. She flew with United for several years, based mainly in Asia, then left the airline industry (post 9/11) and moved to Sydney, Australia. Her training and experiences while working for United included customer service, styling and health and safety which naturally led Pit into the hospitality industry in Australia, where she worked for a number of hotels, restaurants, catering and events management businesses.
Moving to Auckland in 2005 with her now husband, Kevin, Pit’s early years here were taken up raising two boys. This created a different culinary challenge as ‘family food’ was different from the predominantly Asian fusion restaurant style dishes Pit had specialised in. At that stage baked goods were bought rather than made however, after an SOS call to Pit’s mother-inlaw, an Edmond’s Cook Book duly arrived in the mail and this started Pit on the road to mastering baking skills, which she quickly learnt to adapt to suit her eldest son's food allergies. At home Pit mainly cooks vegetarian meals for her family but includes meat and seafood as

long as it's fresh, free-range and locally sourced. She makes her own nut and seed milk to replace commercial options but mainly to provide allergy free choices for her family. Pit’s early experimentation included cooking by mixing flavours. She used healthy ingredients to replace traditional ingredients, spending hours in the kitchen to perfect the flavours yet maintain nourishment. Entertaining was trialled on groups of friends who were very effusive in their praise and started asking Pit to cater their private parties. Friends then started encouraging Pit to start a catering/hospitality business.

SUMMER TIME IN THE VINES This years summer heat has been the perfect anecdote to the wet winter past. The hot summer sun has warmed the crystal waters of the Hauraki Gulf and the rolling hills of the Matakana Coast alike, keeping the summer crowds entertained and providing ideal growing conditions for the regions diverse patchwork of vineyards. While the harvest bounty is far from realised yet, now is the perfect time to enjoy the generous hospitality available throughout your Matakana wine region. With 28 different grape varieties grown in 20 vineyards the Matakana region exemplifies diversity allowing visitors to engage with an eclectic mix of wines and the personalities behind them. The diversity of experiences available lies not just with the regions wines. The acclaimed sculpture/art trails at Brick Bay and the Sculptureum provide distinct visions integrating their vineyards, wine, and restaurants with stunning visual art into broader expressions of place and personality. Places that will leave you inspired on many levels. The classically refined vineyard dining restaurants at Plume/Runner Duck and Ascension integrate a sense of kiwi freshness with traditional European style. Both also provide the locations for stunning vineyard weddings and numerous other events.
Ransom and Omaha Bay Vineyard provide sumptuous vineyard platters to share in their picturesque tasting environments. Heron’s flight combine their unique focus on Italian grape varieties with wood-fired pizzas and convivial al fresco events. The boutique tasting rooms at Hyperion and Matavino give personal access to the passions and personalities of winegrowers John Crone and Jim Hight. While the luxury lodge at Takatu Vineyard provides a five-star opportunity to stay amongst the vines and sample their wines. If that isn’t enough then the sophisticated, locally focused Vintry wine bar in the heart of Matakana provides ample opportunity to taste and explore these wines and those of Coxhead Creek, The Gabion, Gillman, Hawkes Nest, Matakana Estate, and Monarch Vineyard, all of whom can be visited by appointment. The Matakana region is blessed with many fabulous places to visit and things to do, make sure you include the rich and diverse Matakana Wine Trail in your summer plans. www.matakanawines.co.nz

RAMMED EARTH ECO HOUSE WORDS REBECKA
The first time Mariska and Cees van Egmond walked into a rammed earth house, they felt right at home. “I first noticed the air,” says Mariska. “I remember it was in the middle of winter, and I was surprised that I couldn’t smell any dampness inside. It was like the house had a climate of its own, instead of following the outside.” The family had relocated to New Zealand from the Netherlands in 2006 and lived in several rental properties, before purchasing a traditional timber

framed house on South Head. “Over the years we realised that the houses we stayed in all followed the outside climate very closely: too cold in winter, too hot in summer,” says Cees. “We used heating or air conditioning to stay comfortable. We also noticed issues with humidity and condensation. Our oldest son had sensitive airways, and this gave him asthma.” Mariska and Cees moved to Matakana in 2014 with their three children Guy, Zeb and Yma.

Mariska is a Nia Dance teacher and Cees works as a Product Manager for a software company, with a passion for converting classic cars to electric. Having an interest in both health and sustainability, they decided to look at alternative building methods. “We kept thinking: How can we solve these issues? How can we do it better? We found Terra Firma Earth Building Company - they build houses in rammed earth from natural and locally sourced

materials. We liked the whole concept of massive solid walls and concrete floors, creating a thermal mass. We also read it was the same price to build as a traditional house, but I have to admit it wasn’t really,” laughs Cees. The building material is primarily a sandy loam, locally sourced in Mangawhai. Springboard Community Works in Snells Beach, an organisation that works with vulnerable young people and runs programmes to help engage and upskill marginalised youth, came to help and learn from the building process. “We like that our home is a bit rough and imperfect. In fact, we make that a feature. We have left the raw concrete and rust marks on purpose. If there’s a stain, or a chip from the kids playing, that’s a part of the style. The house gets its character over time.” To save money and get the unpretentious interior style they wanted, the couple imported their kitchen and bathrooms from IKEA. “We decided to spend money on a few things that matters, like our bespoke Macrocarpa doors,” says Cees, who used to work as an industrial designer. In terms of sustainability, the family don’t have to use AC or electric heaters, but do enjoy a fire in winter. The hot water heat pump saves considerable energy by extracting heat from the air. For waste-water the family uses a worm system. “If we go away for more than a month we put half a pumpkin in the tank to keep the worms fed - a bit like having pets!” says Mariska. “The Matakana community has been very welcoming,” says Cees. “Mariska runs a food co-op which helps local families buy organic produce at a decent price and with minimal packaging. The local permaculture group came over to see the house and having a brainstorm about the garden design plan, which is the next step for the property. The Matakana Repair Café is also a fantastic initiative and we can’t wait for the next one!” Cees says that the most sustainable feature of the house is that it will last forever. “The Pompallier Mission house in Russel - one of the oldest houses in New Zealand - is made from rammed earth,” he says. “And look at the Chinese wall, that’s also lasted for a while!”

AN EXCLUSIVE MATAKANA COAST RETREAT
One of the most spectacular views in NZ stretching out across the entire Hauraki Gulf lies in front of this exclusive, private estate. Designed by renowned architect Rewi Thompson, the home is cleverly separated into three distinct areas for maximum flexibility in living arrangements. The original barn-style main wing features a cathedral-like lounge/library space with gorgeous American oak floor, decks on two sides and enormous picture windows. Above this, a luxurious loft-style master suite contains a spacious bedroom, walk-in wardrobe, sumptuous ensuite and office. Below the formal lounge, a rustic wine cellar/tasting room opens out through barn doors to the superb in-ground pool with
self-contained, transportable pool house and a sheltered deck. A second bedroom and bathroom complete this wing. The hub of the home is the farmhouse sized gourmet kitchen that boasts an expanse of stone benches. Alongside, a sprawling open plan family room and dining area lead out to a breakfast deck with superb views. This hub connects seamlessly to the third area of the house, where children or guests can relax in their own wing which has another lounge, two huge bedrooms overlooking graceful fern fronds and another sumptuous bathroom. Just over half the easterly sloping land is in pasture, well fenced and watered for stock or
horses. The balance is in QEII covenanted forest, containing huge kauri and rare kaka, native bats and Hochstetter frogs. Despite the seeming remoteness, it's under 10 minutes drive to either picturesque Leigh or Goat Island Marine reserve and Matakana village is just 20 minutes away. This is a spectacular and exclusive property that could be your personal retreat. BEACH, BACH AND BOAT: THE KIWI DREAM
Boathouse Bay, on the shores of Snells Beach embraces the true meaning of ‘beachside’. No busy roads to cross, just follow the path across the sand and you are standing on the beach. 33 individually designed homes threaded through a private beachside enclave, with absolute beachfront available. The developer from the Special Projects Team, feels very passionate about the site that he describes as a very special coastal community with an amazing connection to the water. “A typical suburban subdivision today has 600 square metre sitesthat are fenced off. We are doing the opposite here, we are actively trying to build a permanent community, not a seasonal one,” he says. “We have to think hard about what we put on our New Zealand coastline” he says. “Detail and quality is better than quantity. We worked hard thinking about how people will live in the environment.“ ADVERTORIAL

Snells Beach is perfect for launching a boat, walking and a safe place for kids to paddle and play. “We think our buyers are tired of pushing the mower around. They might have a bach already, but when they spend the weekend there they feel they must work the whole time, because there’s always so much to do. We have designed every detail with a low-maintenance mindset, there’s no lawns to mow and we use aluminium joinery, so you won’t have to spend your weekend painting,” says the special projects team. Multi-award-winning architect Ken Crosson, of Crosson Architects, designed the mix of single, double and tower buildings, with every two or three-bedroom house having views of the sea. He is delighted to have created these homes at a reasonable cost within the coastal property. Renowned landscape architect Rachel de Lambert,
partner of leading New Zealand environmental planning and design consultancy Boffa Miskel, has created a unique landscape design which includes revegetation of grazed pasture and restoring of sand dunes. “This will be an amazing coastal community, caught between the beach, headland and the bush. We are planting 1,300 trees, including a very large Pohutukawa. The existing bush will be extended right around the back of the property”. “The idea is to give a greater number of people the opportunity to live affordably in a quality home on the beach, instead of building a few mansions for the super-rich,” says Crosson. “We are creating a timeless community that feels exciting, memorable and enjoyable year after year.” www.boathousebay.co.nz
PROPERTY PROFILE
Q+A WITH ARCHITECT KEN CROSSON
The settlement pattern looks bespoke and different from what we normally see. What are the reasons for that? The settlement pattern is bespoke, we had a finger of land to design within, it’s not deep, but the unusual shape of the land parcel has been good in a sense as it has allowed us to maximise each house’s connection to the water. Most of the 33 houses get a fantastic view of the ocean, and the series of homes at the back of the site are two storeys with lounge rooms on the top level which look over the single level ones on the front. The rear of the site backs on to a stunning area of native bush, filled with birdlife, while on the other side are reconstructed sand dunes and the ocean view. All the units are made out of the same material. Why this material and does this not create a monotonous environment? All of the houses are made out of the same materials, however there are a series of seven different house types and within the house types there is variability and choice as well. The reason we use one material and colour palette is to give the settlement an architectural unity. These are like a permanent bach, what elements help to create this?
Boathouse Bay houses have been designed to feel like a bach, but the boatsheds and garages, in particular, mean that people are able to live here permanently, and can store their boat and use the outdoor spaces like they would at home but with the added advantage that they are in a community, and will know their neighbours. The houses are close together, do they maintain privacy and how do they do this? The houses are close together, but they have been planned to be private, and having this number of homes on the one section allows us to make the purchase price more accessible. We wanted to build a real community at Boathouse Bay and offer homes in this amazing setting that were also accessible to the regular kiwi buyer. Within the settlement we have grouped houses into smaller blocks separated by garages, boat sheds and courtyards so that owners enjoy privacy while having neighbours close by. What sort of planning has been put into place to protect these from the elements, in particular, the sea and rising tides? We had an extremely progressive team working on the future proofing of Boathouse Bay as anyone needs to when building close to a beach. The whole of the site has been built
up by up to two metres in places, which will protect Boathouse Bay from rising sea levels. The foreshore is a new dune system that will be planted in native grasses and stabilised to protect this natural environment. What sort will interior features be included? e.g. kitchens. High spec kitchens and bathrooms will be included in every unit. All kitchens are imported from Italy and the interiors are extremely high quality. We have also used timber floors throughout to compliment the relaxed beachy feel of Boathouse Bay. Each unit will have a cleverly designed outdoor area and some feature outdoor fireplaces for those long summer evenings. www.boathousebay.co.nz

WARKWORTH VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
The summer season is usually a very busy time for our local emergency services and this year has been no exception. Warkworth Volunteer Fire Brigade alone attended 27 incidents in the weeks around Christmas – and they are only one of five stations in our immediate area. Increasing traffic volumes and visitors coming to stay and play create an environment that lends itself to mishaps – with multiple callouts to baches, holiday homes and road incidents. Summer checklist for keeping safe: •
•
•
Drive to the conditions – be aware of trouble spots that visitors find difficult and take extra care. If an emergency service vehicle i.e. ambulance, fire engine or police car is approaching with lights and sirens going please pull over and stop to let them through. Check your BBQ for gas leaks using the soapy water test.
•
It is restricted fire season, so make sure you obtain a permit before lighting any fires.
•
Vacuum air conditioners before using as the build-up of lint can be a fire risk.
•
Make sure all sleeping areas have a working, long-life photoelectric smoke alarm.
•
If your door has a deadlock, leave the key in so people can escape quickly.
•
Keep exits clear.
•
Have an agreed safe meeting place. Make sure guests know where this is, and how to escape in the event of a fire.
•
Go to www.escapeplanner.co.nz to make an escape plan for your home.

MASTER CRAFTSMEN
TAPATAI DRIFTWOOD
Driftwood sculpture artist, Greg Maddox has had an interesting artistic career in both New Zealand and the U.S.A. Through the early 2000s Greg was a commercial artist, then mural painter and airbrush artist in N.Y.C. where he worked collaboratively with other well-known artists in the area. He then travelled home in 2007 to base himself in Waipu, a place he practically grew up in many years ago. Greg has been recognised through television, print and social media as a
person with an interesting take on handmade driftwood sculpture. As Greg’s business is commission based, he rarely builds a driftwood sculpture for his own property. However he admits that his sculptures, which have included full-sized giraffe, vultures and horses, are very hard to part with, but says it is rewarding to see the look on people’s faces when they get delivery of their driftwood creation. Living in Waipu poses a slight problem with its
location and distribution of driftwood on the white sand beaches of Northland and as a result Greg has to travel long distances to collect the unique pieces of wood needed to create his masterpieces. He commits many hours of his time to drive to some desolate places where he finds himself, along with his faithful German Shepherd, in what he calls his happy place. www.ttcreative.co.nz greag@ttcreative.co.nz

ART
BARBARA VON SEIDA – LANDSCAPES: COLOUR & EMOTIONS
This month the feature artist at the Art Matakana Gallery, is well known and multi-award winning Coromandel artist, Barbara von Seida, who will exhibit her emotive acrylic landscape paintings from 2-24 February. Barbara moved to New Zealand in 1990, settling on the picturesque Wyuna Peninsula where she established the Kowhai Watercolour Studio, now considered the oldest private gallery on the Coromandel Peninsula open to the public. She is fascinated with the soft, rolling landforms, the rich, dark vegetation and the constant sound of the sea. Her latest works express a time in winter when turbulent weather systems caused flooding and roads on the Coromandel Peninsula became impassable. Dark, ominous, dramatic clouds became a daily feature. Barbara’s response was an attempt to combine the atmospheric conditions and geological forces of New Zealand’s countryside.
Barbara commented “When having a close look at the works of serious artists, it becomes obvious that their work is a reflection of what they had experienced in life, what moved their inner parts and what they saw happening around them.” She sees herself no different from them. Besides florals, still life and occasional portrait, landscapes have become her favourite subject, painted with a deeper narrative below the surface. The resulting multi-layered images are therefore not what she has observed, they are her response to what she has observed. It is not her intention to describe a particular place in detail, but rather to express essential moods and emotions. Compiling this series of paintings has been very intense, as Barbara is her own toughest critic when finding the right colour combinations and their tonal values to express the emotion she wishes to convey. The process takes many
weeks of constant layering and adjustment and even then, it may not achieve the outcome she had hoped for. In that context, she likes the abbreviated quote of Picasso “I do not create an image, I find it!” As this exhibition will be her first “solo” north of metropolitan Auckland Barbara is very excited! At the opening of her last solo, art critic, Terry McNamara, said of her work: “This is a rich, almost overwhelming exhibition of completely convincing paintings. The colour here is magnificent in its drama and the coherence of each work. I admire the technique that produces the flatness of the water and the ruggedness of the hills. What you are seeing is the work of a very, very accomplished painter.” www.barbara-von-seida.co.nz

THE VIVIAN – A DESTINATION FOR DISCOVERY WORDS
KATHY
HUNTER
Patricia Piccinini, Sphinx, 2012. © Patricia Piccinini
The Vivian Gallery launches into the new year with a new look, and an extraordinary new show called Exodus. New branding was formally unveiled just before Christmas, with a new logo that is reflective of the design of the doorway of the building – what Director Scott Lawrie calls ‘a doorway to discovery’. “There’s always something new to see at the Vivian. And every time you come through that front door, our aim is to surprise, delight and sometimes even shock!” he says, with a certain amount of glee. The gallery has now been divided into four
distinctive spaces. There’s the North Gallery, which shows significant work by New Zealand (and occasionally Australian) artists; the Studio Gallery which shows exciting new work, installations and small group shows; The Library for smaller edition pieces; and the Lounge Gallery, where you can relax and enjoy art in a welcoming, living-room type environment. “The zoning allows us to broaden the spectrum of art shown at The Vivian,” says Scott. “It allows us to show work to high-end collectors looking for significant investment pieces, as well as those starting or growing their private collections. And
with a dozen or so shows across the year, there really is something for everyone.” The first of the new shows curated by Scott is called Exodus. It’s an ambitious exhibition which brings together some of his favourite artists – including Matakana artist Virginia Leonard, other New Zealand artists such as Fiona Pardington, Dan Arps, Iain Cheesman and Hugh Koha Lindsay, plus Australians Dale Frank and Patricia Piccinini. “It’s been hard work to pull together, but I’m so proud of it. It’s a powerful show of contemporary art, and although there are only eight pieces, each represents a pinnacle of that artist’s practice.

There’s a lot of fun and humour in there, too.” Virginia Leonard has a growing international reputation for her bold, luscious ceramic works. Lawrie says The Vivian is lucky to show her. “Virginia is really going places – she totally sold out at the last big art fair in Sydney, she’s selling in the USA and across Europe. We were thrilled when Virginia and her gallery, Paul Nache, agreed to make a unique work just for Exodus – it’s a ripper of a piece too.” The centrepiece of the exhibition is a large-scale

sculpture called ‘Sphinx’ by Australian artist Patricia Piccinini. Known for her hyper-real depictions of freakish human/animal hybrids, it’s a confronting and disturbing sculpture that has turned heads at MONA in Tasmania, in galleries throughout Australia, and as far away as Brazil.
After a few months getting to grips with his new role, Scott’s vision of ‘going large’ with the Vivian Gallery is coming to fruition. With edgy new branding and his first exhibition aimed squarely at pushing the boundaries, you get the feeling that he’s just getting into his stride.
“Sphinx is a piece of work that’s incredibly important, and yet someone like Patricia Piccinini – an internationally-renowned artist – has allowed us to bring it to our little corner of the world. Seriously, you’d be nuts to miss this.”

PROPERTY PROFILE
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE IN OMAHA
Alan Perkinson’s Omaha beach house was inspired by his childhood years growing up on a farm in the surrounding area and exploring the sand dunes. Alistair Watt brought Alan’s vision to life years later, in a stunning home with a focus on premium design, quality of build and a fit-out that will impress the most discerning of buyers. There is a lot to like about this property that sits just “oneback", with direct shared access to the golden sands of the beach. Alan happily admits to a love of cooking and entertaining so it is no surprise that the house itself is designed for this purpose. The interior enjoys a lot of natural light and workable spaces in a free-flowing layout, with walls of bi-folding and sliding glass that allow a seamless connection between superb indoor/outdoor living spaces. The west deck reflects the overall theme of the home with an open fireplace and built-in BBQ that has protection from the elements, provided by automated LouvreTec roof panels along with overhead heating.
The master bedroom, with its generous ensuite and walk through wardrobe, sits on a mezzanine level taking advantage of the vast 5-metre-high stud that runs through the lounge area. This lounge area, whilst spacious, creates a sense of contentment with a unique oak panelled feature wall and large gas fireplace. You will be delighted with the open plan kitchen and dining area, which allows access to east and west decks for alfresco dining and entertaining, regardless of weather conditions. The appliances are all of the highest quality and solid oak timber flooring throughout is also impressive. The garage area is a versatile space which is fully carpeted and currently set up as a "state of the art" media room and gym, however you could use it as it was intended to store the many toys you'll acquire to take full advantage of life at the beach. The fourth bedroom is currently used as the office of Marnie, Alan’s wife, from where she runs their health and wellness business “twenty8.com”. This bedroom is also large enough to allow for an
additional lounge or rumpus space. This is an impressive house with too many features to list, but don’t take our word for it, you really must view it yourself to appreciate all that is on offer. Alan and Marnie are keen to sell as they have purchased another property elsewhere and are now looking forward to moving on from this house that has provided them with many fun memories shared with friends, usually accompanied by great food and wine. ALT-COUNTRY BELLE COMES HOME WORDS
REUBEN
KEELING
The beauty and tranquility of Maungaturoto has drawn Aimee Renata home. The alt-country artist – also known by her stage name Erny Belle – has recently ditched the big city to spend more time with her music and her family. But her favourite spots around Maungaturoto aren’t the kind you’d find in the tourist guides. “The train tracks, opposite where I live – it's very 'Stand by Me',” says Aimee. “I know I shouldn't walk by the tracks, but I know exactly what time the trains come. Nobody goes there. There’s also a few abandoned shacks and cabins that are hidden amongst the woods. Very spooky. And then there's Nana's backyard, under the pohutukawa tree.” Aimee plans to release her debut EP later this year. Right now, she’s focused on writing and recording. “Shaky Studio is in the warehouse next to where my father and I live. My father Fred Renata – who works in the film industry but is also an audio engineer – set it up a couple of years ago. We’ve had a few bands and poet David Meritt record here.” “I’m recording with Jackson Hobbs from Tomorata – he’s engineering my EP. Jackson has been amazing to work with, very patient, and he’s a great drummer and all-round musician. Also, my dad Fred is playing some of the steel tracks.” Aimee says most of her songs have themes of love and death. The countless artists she draws inspiration from include the likes of Marianne Faithful, Chopin and Neil Young. “Artists like Neil Young inspire me to write music that speaks about important issues, things that matter. You know, start a revolution and perhaps not always be singing about how useless and heartbroken I am. Music to empower others.” Her stage name Erny Belle might sound random, but it begins to make sense when Aimee breaks it down. “Erny comes from Ernest, who was my grandfather who passed away when I was young,” she says. “Belle is from my little sister Lily Belle who was born on the anniversary date of my brother’s death. Ernest also means honest and Belle means beautiful. The name came to me like a lightning strike – it sounded so terrible and silly, and I kinda hate it, but it just stuck and I had to own it. It holds masculine and feminine, life and death, and beautiful truth.” Listening to her songs – like the haunting ‘Sun Goes Down’ – and you understand how beautiful that truth can be. www.facebook.com/ernybellemusic www.instagram.com/erny.belle/

HAPPENINGS
DAYDREAM BELIEVER WORDS
Richard Wilson is a three times award winner in the (now iconic) Waipu Museum Art’nTartan Wearable Art Awards. He was first inspired to create an entry when he appeared on stage as the Flying Scotsman, modelling a costume for a friend. “I wanted to be part of the whole set up,” Richard says. “There was such an amazing, friendly atmosphere backstage that I really wanted to be included in it. So I went on from there to create my first winning entry - ‘Black Douglas’ in 2015.” This creation won the Engine Room category which had been introduced to encourage the blokes to put their creative hats on and enter the contest. Since then Richard has entered two more costumes - in 2016 his ‘Tartan Flying Machine’ took top honours as Supreme Award winner and again last year when he won the category ‘Beam Me Up Scottie’ with his ‘Tartan Space Oddity’. Hailing originally from Auckland, Richard and his partner, Juanita, have now been part of the Waipu scene for eleven years. They came north to take over the Waipu Four Square and now Richard runs his own business, Bream Bay Glass. He has always had a creative streak, excelling at art in school and studying architectural

draughtsmanship later on, but Richard had never actually created anything “physical”. “I’m a daydreamer,” he laughs, ‘and I’ve managed to put these daydreams into something concrete. I really believed I could do it!’ He has however, not actually used concrete in his designs, not yet anyway. He enjoys fossicking around for cast-off materials in various places, with which to create his entry. He enjoys recycling odds and sods but also uses new materials in his work. “Blood, sweat and tears and lots of hot glue as well,” he said. In the months leading up to Art’nTartan he can usually be found in his garage and neighbours hear hammering and banging and maybe a little swearing often late into the evening. In spite of this, what finally emerges is always amazing. Proof of which is Richard’s framed winning certificates on the walls of his lounge. “Winning is great” Richard says. “A bonus… and the substantial prize money is always welcome but my main reason for entering is being part of such a fantastic community event.” When asked if he has any hints for budding wearable art creators, especially blokes, Richard said, “The contest is not only for females. More men should enter. My tip would be to look at
the materials available to you and the tools to assemble them and follow your dream to be up on that stage and prove we can be as good as the girls!’ Richard has always been aided and abetted by his long-term partner, Juanita. Tongue in cheek, he quips. “Behind every creative genius, there is a garage widow or widower. "Juanita is a great ‘sounding board’ for my sometimes crazy ideas and is also very good at adding glitter to my artworks!” Anyone interested in any aspect of the contest either, as an entrant or backstage helper, is welcome to attend an Expressions of Interest Meeting in the Waipu Celtic Barn on Thursday 15 February at 7pm. There will be an opportunity to talk to the Director and Production Manager and other members of the organising team who will be happy to answer any queries anyone may have. The show itself will be held on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 July with the final date for entry forms to be submitted Friday 27 April. www.waipumuseum.com
