PUHOI & MAHURANGI WEST Puhoi is a small village set around the beautiful Puhoi River, approximately 30 minutes north of Auckland City. The name Puhoi translates to ‘slow water’, so called because the tide is slow up the river, making it the perfect place for kayaking or canoeing. Puhoi is a village that tells a story, with its Bohemian history dating back to 1863, when the first Europeans settled to start new lives in New Zealand. Today the story is discoverable through the heritage sites still present, including the church, library and wharf, the history is well documented in the Bohemian Museum. Puhoi is now also known for its local pub, cheese café and monthly farmers’ market. The village is a gateway to much of the 900-hectare Mahurangi Regional Park Estate, from Wenderholm to Mahurangi West.
A DAY OUT IN PUHOI + MAHURANGI WEST Morning – Stop in at Wenderholm for a leisurely walk through the picturesque Regional Park. Or for the more active traveller, a return journey canoeing or kayaking from the village. Afternoon – Take an afternoon break at the Puhoi Cheese Factory for a delicious cheese platter. The factory, nestled in the upper reaches of the quaint Puhoi Valley, was originally a goat farm. Next, explore the history of Puhoi at the Bohemian Museum before sunset. Evening - Unwind and grab a beer at the iconic Puhoi Pub - situated just far enough from Auckland City to be called a real country pub. Take in the stories from the past hanging on the walls - it’s a definite must see.

WARKWORTH Only 45 minutes north of Auckland, Warkworth is perched at the head of the Mahurangi Harbour with the Mahurangi River flowing through the dainty township, its most prominent feature. Warkworth was founded in 1853 by John Anderson Brown, who named the town after Warkworth in Northumberland. The town’s annual Kowhai Festival is one of the largest community festivals in the country, celebrating all the wonderful things about the Kowhai Coast district. If you need a break from your journey, fish and chips or a picnic on the duck-populated riverbank, is a pleasant stopover. Not far up the road is The Bridgehouse, the oldest surviving building in Warkworth. The history of the town can be seen as you walk through the streets following the Heritage Trail. Warkworth has a great selection of shops to wonder through and plenty of cafés and restaurants to satisfy all taste buds.
A DAY OUT IN WARKWORTH Morning - Start your day at the Warkworth and District Museum for an insight into the lives and pursuits of pioneering families. From the past to the present, the museum has a magnificent display of colonial history. For natural history take an easy walk along one of the well-made boardwalks, through the native bush, to the lookout and soak up the majesty of the kauri trees. Afternoon – When the temperatures are higher, take a deep-water dip at the Wilson’s Cement Works. This freshwater swimming hole is loved by all ages and is a great picnic spot. Evening – Enjoy an early evening overlooking the river in the heart of Warkworth, and dine at the Wharf Street Bistro for delicious heart-warming food. Fancy a little more? Continue your evening and walk along the boardwalk to Lucy Moore Memorial Park and enjoy the effortless 1km stroll along the esplanade. Photo credit: Andrew Tunnicliffe

KAWAU ISLAND Kawau Island is one of the largest islands that make up the Hauraki Gulf, but it’s a quiet haven with no roads. Take a ferry cruise to the island from Sandspit Wharf, to discover the beautiful bays, historical landmarks and keep an eye out for dolphins! Kawau is one of the most beautiful islands of the Hauraki Gulf and one of the richest in history. Initially intended for farmland, copper was discovered on Kawau Island in 1844 and a mine opened the same year. Sir George Grey, third Governor of New Zealand, then bought the island in 1862, developing the copper mine into the Mansion House and its exotic gardens. You can walk through the mansion and have lunch at the Mansion House Café during the summer months. Photo credit: www.katherinenorman.co.nz
A DAY OUT AT KAWAU ISLAND Morning – Hop on the ferry from Sandspit Wharf to start your morning on the Coppermine Lookout walking track, about a 25 minute easy stroll, this cleared grassy area provides good views of the Coppermine Engine House remains. Take the track from Mansion House to Lady’s Bay and continue along the gradually climbing path to reach the Lookout. Afternoon – Head to the magnificent, historic Mansion House. For a $4 entry fee, you’ll see a wonderful insight into colonial New Zealand with many treasures from Sir George Grey’s travels. Enjoy lunch at the Mansion House Café while admiring the peacocks strutting the lawns. Evening – Follow the Miners Track from the Mansion House through the bush and along the foreshore to the copper mine itself – the kids will enjoy this one! Charter boats can also take you to see the mine from the water. Kawau Island is also great for water activities - you can end the day with a bit of fishing, swimming or kayaking. 22

WELLSFORD, TE HANA & KAIWAKA You’ll find Wellsford where the Northland and Auckland regions merge. The main street eateries offer plenty of food and refreshments for passing travellers. Wellsford is a busy, country town with easy access to the Kaipara Harbour to the west and Pakiri Beach and Te Arai to the East. In the early 1860s, English settlers arrived establishing themselves at Port Albert, on the Kaipara Coast about 10km west of Wellsford. The settlement was isolated and many found it difficult to make a living, so moved inland to more fertile land, which is how Wellsford was discovered. This rural town caters for many farmers in the area and the short hour drive from Auckland, makes it a popular spot for families seeking a relaxed, affordable lifestyle. WELLSFORD, TE HANA & KAIWAKA
A DAY OUT IN WELLSFORD, TE HANA & KAIWAKA Morning – Strut Wellford’s main street for a bit of shopping, there’s plenty of vintage finds at the antique and op shops. Before lunch, head over to Albertland and District Museum to find out about the rich history of local pioneers. Afternoon – There’s plenty to keep you busy in the afternoon. Walk the Dome Valley Trail through native bush to the lookout, with views across the Mahurangi Peninsula to the Hauraki Gulf. If you’re after a guided tour, visit Te Hana Te Ao Marama, to appreciate a traditional Maori village. The tour provides a unique 17th Century insight into pre-European Maori life within a fortified village. Evening – Head a little further north to Kaiwaka – worth a visit for the cheese shop alone. Stick around and drive though the town when the sun sets to entertain the kids with the epic outdoor light features. WELLSFORD, TE HANA & KAIWAKA 53
MANGAWHAI Mangawhai combines sun, surf, sand, great food, vibrant art, rich history and incredible scenery. Located 80 minutes drive north of Auckland, Mangawhai is 5kms from Mangawhai Heads; one of the region’s top holiday destinations. Mangawhai means ‘stream of stingray’ and this theme has remained popular in local art and architecture. It sits at the southwest border of the Kaipara Harbour, which is surrounded by large sand dunes, ‘crocodile rocks’ and the incredible cliff top walk. Mangawhai is a diverse, natural playground. There’s plenty to see and do while in Mangawhai, from boutique vineyards, worldclass golf courses, a famous chocolate factory, art trails and a farmers’ market. Mangawhai is a holiday destination for everyone to enjoy, and there’s a reason why the locals know it as ‘Magical Mangawhai’.
A DAY OUT IN MANGAWHAI Morning – Known as the ‘walking capital of the North’, you definitely need to kick-start your day on one of the walking tracks. Mangawhai even has an annual Walking Weekend, celebrating all its incredible range of walks. Afternoon – Take the kids to Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ), for an adventure filled afternoon. It’s the ultimate recreational facility with a state-of-the-art skatepark, children’s playground, multi-sport court, flying fox, bike tracks and BBQ facilities. Evening – Satisfy your sweet tooth by stopping at the local chocolate factory, Bennetts of Mangawhai. Looking for something more lively? Mangawhai Tavern hosts some great live music acts. WAIPU & LANGS BEACH Waipu is a friendly town with stunning natural surroundings and an intriguing history. Waipu’s Scottish story is unique in New Zealand, as a singular community of nearly a thousand Scottish Nova Scotians who settled in the one region back in the mid 1800s. Near the town are the Waipu Caves, which contain a significant population of glow-worms. The 2km walk leads you through picturesque karst limestone landscapes, across farmland and bush, to a point where you can take in the beautiful views. On the coastal road between Waipu and Mangawhai, you’ll find Langs Beach – a truly spectacular spot. Imagine golden, glimmering sand between your toes, while taking in the views out to sea of Whangarei Heads and the Hen and Chicken Islands. It’s the perfect spot for a coastal weekend getaway in the summer months. Photo credit: Kevin Riley
A DAY OUT IN WAIPU & LANGS BEACH Morning – Follow the dramatic story of remarkable migrations at the Waipu Museum. The story is revealed through interactive exhibitions and displays. Once you’re educated on the Scottish origins, head to the Waipu Caves to witness the glistening glow-worms – the little ones will love this. Afternoon – Spend your afternoon at Waipu Cove, a long sandy beach with safe swimming, surfing and fishing. Feeling peckish after all the exploring? Enjoy a delicious pizza at the seaside Cove Café, washed down with a beer or margarita if you’re feeling fancy. Evening – Pick a spot under a Pohutukawa tree on Langs Beach for a relaxing evening ahead. Enjoy a cheese platter while watching the sunset and keep a lookout as dolphins often visit. There’s nothing better than finishing the day with an evening stroll along the perfect curve of golden sand. 60
