PUhoi & Mahurangi West Rich in Bohemian history, Puhoi curves around the ‘slow river’ that gives the village its name. Just below the village hall lies the landing site of the first European settlers who arrived by canoe in 1863, drawn by the promise of land, yet unprepared for the rugged conditions. The settlers were met by local iwi, who would teach them how to fish, snare birds and eat from the bush. Renowned for its colourful pub, Puhoi now boasts cafés and an artisan cheese factory, and is a popular milestone on Te Araroa, the national walkway. The village is also a gateway to much of the 900-hectare Mahurangi Regional Park Estate, from Wenderholm to Mahurangi West.

8

Puhoi Church by Louise Munro

A day out in Mahurangi West

Visit Waiwera, a seaside resort with natural hot springs and a spa, then hike to Wenderholm the long way around Maungatauhoro, for spectacular coastal views.

Te Muri is the region’s hidden gem, a secluded beach destined to stay that way thanks to successful lobbying by passionate locals determined to keep it car-free. Access is over a farm track past the historic cemetery (3 hours return), or by kayak across the estuary from Wenderholm. Long-term plans include bicycle and horse trails, a pathway across farmland to Pūhoi and a possible chain link ferry.

Sullivans Bay is a popular picnic, camping and swimming spot. At low tide, kids will enjoy rock hopping towards Pudding Island.

School up on local history in the Bohemian Museum in the old convent at Puhoi.

Walk a section of the Te Araroa trail from the swingbridge at Remiger Road to Puhoi domain. The valley views are glorious in autumn.

WARKWORTH Perched at the head of the historic Mahurangi River, the town of Warkworth has a friendly vibe and a relaxed pace. Throughout the late 1800s the river was the town’s lifeline, bustling with passenger steamers and scows transporting timber, cattle and flour, as well as lime and cement used in the construction of downtown Auckland. Built in 1908 in nearby Whangateau the restored scow Jane Gifford is moored at the town basin and available for summer sailings and charters. Flat-bottomed scows were the indispensible workhorses of early settler communities, able to navigate creeks and tidal estuaries, and remaining upright even at low tide for easy loading of stock and freight.

Town Basin by Deon Hamilton

A day out in Warkworth

Small people love feeding the ducks on the riverbank, then wandering along the boardwalk to the hill at Lucy Moore Memorial Park for rolling and sliding.

At high tide, launch your kayak or paddleboard by the skate ramp and head upstream to the dam beneath the town bridge or down river to the ruins of the historic Wilson’s Cement Works (a great spot to walk the dog).

The Warkworth & Districts Museum is a local gem with an impressive collection of pioneering treasures to intrigue young and old. Kids love the original town jail, post office and World War II army hut and the short boardwalk trail through the native bush and giant kauri trees of Parry Kauri Park.

Wilson’s Cement Works by Katherine Norman

Warkworth Cement Works

The flooded quarry at the old Wilson’s Cement Works is a popular freshwater swimming hole. Teens love lounging under the willows and “bombing” off the banks. Suitable for confident swimmers only.

Kowhai Scenic Reserve by Deon Hamilton

Kowhai Scenic Reserve

Kowhai Scenic Reserve by the infamous Hill Street intersection has a short, pretty track through native bush past abandoned lime kilns. Great for little explorers.

Kawau Island It’s just a short boat ride from Sandspit Wharf, but bushclad Kawau Island is a world of its own. Most of the island is privately owned, so there are no connecting roads. But what it lacks in traffic noise it makes up for in birdsong - watch out for wekas, fantails, grey warblers and peacocks strutting their stuff on the lawns of the historic Mansion House. This imposing residence was once home to Governor George Grey and offers an intriguing glimpse of colonial New Zealand. Grey was a keen collector of plants and animals, introducing many exotic species to the island and sharing ideas with renowned scientists from around the world, including Charles Darwin.

22

Mansion House bay by Helen Jeffery

A day out on Kawau

Mansion House Bay is a popular overnight anchorage and picnic spot, with a large grass reserve and good walking trails. Walk to Ladies Bay, follow the Redwood Track, or take the miners’ trail via Dispute Cove to the old copper mine. Founded in 1844, this is believed to be New Zealand’s first underground mining operation and the chimney still stands. Return to Mansion House by the old coach road.

The gentle curving beach and clear waters of Vivian Bay offer superb swimming, while boaties and divers can take their pick of secluded coves around the island.

Drop in on the Kawau Boating Club for a beer or a meal overlooking Bon Accord Harbour. Members can also take advantage of hot showers and laundry facilities (anyone can join).

MATAKANA Surrounded by vineyards and stunning beaches, the historic village of Matakana has become one of Auckland’s must-visit destinations. Founded in the 1840s, the town became known for the riverside sawmill, brickworks, creamery and abundant local produce. Today Matakana has a vibrant creative scene, a friendly community with an entrepreneurial spirit and a fine selection of restaurants, eateries and watering holes. The popular Saturday Farmers’ Market on the site of the old timber yard features abundant local artisan produce and live music in a pretty riverside setting. Little ones will enjoy the petite adventure playground tucked behind the main stage and the short walk along the river to the waterfall. Pop next door to the Matakana Market at the Old Dairy Factory, for collectables, art, handcrafts, clothing and gifts. Bring plenty of cash as queues for the ATM can be long.

Omaha by Deon Hamilton

A day out in Matakana

• •

Children will enjoy the petting zoo, farm trail and playground at the Matakana Country Park. Walk or cycle from the village all the way to Omaha Beach or Point Wells, following the sculptural markers made by local pottery, Morris & James. The stunning views across orchards to Omaha are worth the climb. Omaha Beach is a local favourite for running, walking and swimming. The northern end of the spit is home to endangered dotterels, while the estuary side is great for paddleboarding and water skiing at high tide.

Matakana Markets by Craig Rohloff

Point Wells Jetty

At high tide head to the sleepy seaside village of Point Wells, and pick one of the jetties along Riverside Drive for deep, clear water swimming. Kids love the pontoon at the boat ramp too, with pretty views across to Big Omaha Wharf, once the hub of the district.

Anchor Bay by Deon Hamilton

Anchor Bay

Tawharanui Regional Park features some of Auckland’s finest beaches, with sweeping stretches of sand, steady surf and stunning views to Little Barrier. Older kids and teens enjoy the low-tide climb around the rocks to the mermaid pool. The park is home to kiwi and endangered takahē, so pick up a map from the ranger’s hut at Anchor Bay and follow the ecology trail or one of several longer hikes.

THE SMOKO ROOM AND Sawmill Brewery Sawmill is an independent, New Zealand owned brewery run by a small and talented team. Sawmill started brewing in 2004 on the site of what was a local timber mill established in the 1860’s. Our brewing is underpinned by this heritage of craftsmanship and tenacity. It’s a real privilege to make beer and gratifying to hold our day’s work in a glass. We want our beer to taste clean and to honour the ingredients. These beers have a heritage and yet making them up north will always give them an edge. Having brewed for years in Leigh we are stoked to now be in new premises just out of Matakana at 1004 Leigh Road. It means a great deal to us to be able to open the Smoko Room, a place in the brewery for conversation, community, food and drink. Come visit Mike and Kirsty and the Sawmill crew. 1004 Leigh Road, Matakana See our website for the opening hours: www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz | 09 422 6555

LEIGH, GOAT ISLAND & PAKIRI “Leigh By The Sea” has a lively music scene and is well-known for its outstanding fishing, snorkelling and diving, and friendly locals. There’s a stunning sea view around every corner, plenty of walking tracks, and incredible birdlife, so keep your eyes open for kaka, kereru, kookaburras, bellbirds, gannets and blue herons. Where else can you stand waistdeep in clear water, surrounded by fat snapper? Goat Island Marine Reserve – New Zealand’s first - is a national treasure, so bring your mask and snorkel, or take a ride on a glass-bottomed boat. There are rock pools to explore and the Marine Discovery Centre has a touch tank, interactive displays and fun school holiday programmes. Leigh Harbour Walk by Katherine Norman

A day out in Leigh, GOAT ISLAND & PAKIRI

At low tide head to Leigh Wharf and follow the trail around the harbour, through bush to a safe swimming beach. Watch out for dolphins along the way.

Off-road runners and mountain bikers will enjoy a morning trot along ridge-top Cape Rodney Road, with spectacular views south to Omaha and north to Pakiri and the Hen & Chicken Islands.

Follow the walkway at the bottom of Wonderview Road to watch the surfers on Daniels Reef.

Pack a picnic and your togs, and follow the tree-lined Ti Point Scenic Reserve trail. There are swimming and snorkelling coves with lots of rocks and trees to climb, and the track is suitable for little ones.

Go walking or horse riding along unspoilt Pakiri Beach. At high tide kids love swimming in the inlet and if you time it right, you can float from one end to the other with the pull of the outgoing tide.

Wellsford, Te Hana & Kaiwaka In the 1860s, a group of ‘non-comformist’ immigrants settled at Albertland - now Port Albert – on the Kaipara Harbour, as part of the last organised British settlement of New Zealand. The settlement was isolated and many found it difficult to make a living, so moved inland to the more fertile lands. Thus Wellsford was founded and the town’s name is said to be an acronym of those first settler families Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble. Today Wellsford is a busy country town, with a proud sporting history and easy access to the Kaipara Harbour to the west, and Pakiri Beach and Te Arai, to the east.

Dome Valley Bush Track by Deon Hamilton

A day out in Wellsford, Te Hana & Kaiwaka •

The Albertland & Districts Museum tells the rich history of local pioneers.

Magpies will enjoy foraging for treasures through the many antique, vintage and op shops on Wellsford’s main street.

Walkers will enjoy the Dome Valley Trail through native bush to the lookout, with views across the Mahurangi Peninsula to the Hauraki Gulf. The track links up to Govan Wilson Road above Matakana and forms part of the Te Araroa trail.

The Tanekaha Forest between Kaiwaka and Mangawhai has several popular trails.

Visitors young and old will enjoy a guided tour through Te Hana Te Ao Marama - Maori Cultural Centre. The traditional Maori Village provides a unique 17th Century insight into pre-European Maori life within a papakainga and pa.

Mangawhai The affectionatelydubbed ‘Magical Mangawhai’ has two distinct townships linked by a causeway – Mangawhai village to the south west of the harbour, and Mangawhai Heads to the north east. From the deep-water estuary, dramatic sand dunes, and popular surf beach with ‘crocodile rocks’ framing harbour and ocean, to the famed cliff top walk, Mangawhai’s natural playground is diverse. The area is also rich in Maori history. Mangawhai means ‘stream of the stingray’, a theme that persists in local art and architecture. Once a backwater surfie town, Mangawhai is now firmly on the map as a desirable place to live and play, with vineyards, cafes, a well-known chocolate factory, art galleries, farmers’ market and a golf course.

52

Mangawhai Heads at sunset by Deon Hamilton

A day out in Mangawhai

Beach or estuary – spoilt for choice, the little folks will enjoy safe estuary dipping (watch the current). Kayaking is a great option too. Endless fun can be had at the surf beach, patrolled in summer by voluntary surf lifesavers.

Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) – an epic outdoor location for all ages and stages! Skatepark, bike tracks, multi sports court, playground and BBQ facilities – this impressive facility is leading the way.

Mangawhai Museum – a showcase of Mangawhai’s best stories, unfolding from a dynamic new building. Be sure to learn about the saving of the harbour entrance, an inspiring tale of teamwork and determination.

Mangawhai Walks – dubbed the ‘walking capital of the North’, Mangawhai celebrates these incredible walks with its annual Walking Weekend, ending on a high with a Food and Wine Festival. It pays to book ahead!

Ding Bay by Katherine Norman

WaipU A small town big on Scottish heritage, Waipu is best known for its vibrant annual festivals – the Highland Games and Tartan Week. The Waipu Caves are seriously impressive, with one of the country’s largest stalagmites, glow-worms and lime formations (take care – it can be slippery!). Follow the coastal trail from Waipu Cove to Ding Bay and check out the Pancake Rocks. Newbie surfers love Waipu Cove, while the more experienced prefer the punchy waves, golden sands and shady pohutukawas at nearby Langs Beach.

I offer retreats for women who need a weekend away to have some ‘time out’. Life is busy, so busy that sometimes we forget to slow down long enough to have some fun. The themes for 2017 will be yoga, creativity, planning your business year, cooking, pampering and midlife weekends.

We are leaders in the design and supply of stunning, high quality, eco-friendly, natural wooden buildings. Choose and customise an existing plan, or start from scratch. Customkit can supply a shell only kitset package, and you use your own builder or a Customkit Network Builder who can manage the project.
