Keen to get outdoors and help boost the natural beauty and brilliance of our backyard? If you've been waiting for an opportunity to take action and volunteer one (or three) days for one of our regional parks, the Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary Society Inc (TOSSI) and the Auckland Council would love your help planting a few trees.

be planted back in their original habitat, to further improve this special ecosystem. That might sound like a lot of trees, and it is! It takes at least three Planting Days to get these into the ground – and a massive effort, which these teams, the trees and all the animals that will find new homes amongst them would love you for.

TOSSI works in partnership with the Auckland Council to maximise the success of the Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary. Every year, Auckland Council, TOSSI and park rangers, collect seeds from within the Tāwharanui Park and grow on the resulting plants in the nursery. A couple of winters after collection, the 20,000-odd trees are ready to

The Auckland Council run Planting Days with TOSSI, aimed at protecting native plants, birds, fish and insects, their support systems and food supplies. Regular planting is incredibly important for the Tāwharanui Regional Park as it helps maintain and enhance biodiversity. As with all regional parks, the aim is to protect ecological

function as well as create “areas for recreation and views to enjoy," says Sue Hill from Auckland Council. Another reason to get involved? "Because it’s fun! You can watch the result of your work develop and (coincidentally) you’re doing your bit to save the planet," says Sue. You'll also be with likeminded people, all passionate about conservation. Those who have been volunteering their time will no doubt attest to the feel-good moment when returning to the areas they have planted and seeing the incredible growth they take on. You can really see your positive impact on the local environment.

Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced green thumb or a plant taxonomist; these planting days are all about getting stuck in and having fun, all while showing your love for the Tāwharanui sanctuary, it’s plants and animals. This year, you can volunteer your time on Sunday 3 June, 1 July or 5 August. No sign up required just roll on up with your family and friends, your own spade and gloves! Make sure you're wearing enclosed boots or shoes and weather appropriate clothing, "you'll almost certainly get muddy," says Sue. Just remember, all footwear and equipment must be clean of soil to prevent the spread of Kauri Dieback disease.

The day starts at 9am and with fruit, cookies, coffee and tea available all day for boosted energy! The Auckland Council will even have food ready at lunchtime or for when you've finished to say "job well done!"

PROFILE

JOEY CHALK - KINGPOST TIMBERWORKS WORDS

LUKE

The back of Joey Chalk’s shirt says, ‘We make what you can’t find’. ‘The kind of work I really love is when a client has a dream project but they think it is going to be too expensive and doubt anyone can make it. But I say that it’s not going to be that expensive and I can probably make anything you want.’ Joey is a third-generation woodworker who began learning his skills, alongside his dad, from three years old. ‘My first business, which I started when I was 13, was making skateboard decks.’ Joey was very keen on skateboarding and admits he could have gone as far as finding a sponsor but it wasn’t really the direction in which he wanted to go. ‘Working in film and TV was my dream. I auditioned as an actor and ended up doing some stunt work because I was really into skateboarding. I got paid for it but I just wondered if I was actually achieving anything.’ After discovering how unglamourous the media industry was, Joey joined his father’s building business. ‘It was an opportunity to earn a good wage and do something I enjoyed. I learned the skills I needed from him and started my own building business. I had four fulltime builders working for me and I suddenly became a manager which, really, was no fun.’ Soon after, Joey was diagnosed with bowel cancer and had to shut everything down and do chemotherapy for six months. ‘I had to sell our house and move in with my parents-in-law. There was a good-sized workshop there so I played around making whatever I could when I felt well enough. By the end of that six months, I had a couple of jobs lined up for making some furniture. I’m actually so grateful I had that health scare because it made me ask myself what I really wanted to do with my time.’

6

WILLIAMSON

In 2010, Joey began Kingpost Timberworks in Wellsford. His philosophy with Kingpost is to do work he loves, keep it small and concentrate on making enough to live and have some fun. ‘I don’t want to grow my business much beyond what I can do myself. A lot of people find that hard to understand but I just want enough money to buy food and enjoy my family. What I do is very niche but I really enjoy it and I don’t want to lose that.’ As an extension of an add-on service that Joey provided – giving clients a video of him making their piece of furniture – he started a successful You Tube channel featuring his work. ‘I’ve got over 100,000 subscribers now and it has become an income source for me.’ While the most common commissions are for some type of shelving, like bookcases or entertainment units, Joey emphasises that he loves challenging work. ‘The reason I get so many oddball jobs is because my approach is to say to everything, “Yeah, I can make it”, and then I just have to work out how to do it. I get jobs because I have the creativity and skills to solve problems.’ As for the future, Joey keeps plans to a minimum. ‘With the cancer diagnosis, I found one day I was healthy and the next day I was a cancer patient. It was a big thing and made me realise you have no clue what’s going to happen tomorrow. So, I don’t make a lot of plans. I’m always just on the look-out for the next interesting job.’ www.youtube.com (KingPost TimberWorks) www.kingpost.co.nz

Their new 'walk through warehouse' is open every Saturday morning from 10am. THE CAMERA SHOP

Colin has been at the Camera Shop since 1999, when it was the local Kodak Express. They won ‘Store of the Year’ just before leaving Kodak and re-branded as ‘The Camera Shop’, in 2010, “which was the best thing we ever did,” says owner Colin Stables. “We are a busy little photo store. We print photos, take passport pictures, offer photo books and canvases at our kiosks.” If you have ever wondered what happens behind the scenes, they can scan and restore the photos with infrared dust removal and photoshop editing. They are also able to repair damaged photos and even colourise black and whites. “We love working with old photos. Photos are life captured and sharing those moments is a real privilege.” says Colin.

“We have seen many changes over the years and so far, we have weathered them well,” says Colin. “As long as the people of Warkworth want us here we will be here. If you have ever been into see us, you will know we are always willing to help you create something special with your photos. When you have worked in town for as long as I have, you get to meet most of the locals. Warkworth is a lovely friendly town that is growing into a busy suburb. “ 35 Queen Street, Warkworth

Tips for the perfect picture Photos can be artistic or be a record of where we are and who we love. Here are some tips for making the most of your photos. 1. Give your lens a nice clean, phones always need this! 2. Take a thoughtful frame of the subject. 3. Have a contrasting background. 4. Get up close for portraits. 5. Get out when the light is nice like in the morning and the evenings. 6. Add interest to landscapes, like having something nice in the foreground and including leading eye lines.

MAORI LAND WARS WORDS

In recent times the media are urging us to commemorate the New Zealand land wars. Matakana has a direct link to the Waikato wars. After Lieutenant-General Cameron led British troops in the invasion of Waikato in July 1863, any Māori who resisted were classed as rebels and thereafter captured as prisoners. After the battle at Rangiriri 200 Māori prisoners were force-marched to Auckland and held on the hulk Marion on the Waitemata. Governor Grey had them transported on the Marion to Kawau Island, his newly acquired country home in August 1864. They were held there without trial for weeks; they had permission to cultivate their gardens for food and cut firewood for the Auckland market. When a man-o’-war turned up, an officer asked if Māori understood the significance of the warship. They were told they were to be taken to some distant island, or left abandoned somewhere in midocean. That line is omitted from every Pakeha

rendering of the story. The line may have been spoken in jest – who knows; it was enough to convince the Māori to execute an already discussed plan to escape. Early on Sunday 11 September 1864, the whole contingent of prisoners left and made their way to the eastern peak of Mt Tamahunga where they built a Pa. They did have freedom of movement and over the ensuing weeks they survived on wild pig, native pigeons, seafood from Whangateau, and the occasional poached sheep or cattle. They were desperate men who were trapped by Government policy in its quest for land, but were constrained in their relationship with the Matakana populace; they had been instructed by the local Māori not to harm Pakeha. Many a Matakana story emerges about the encounters these Māori had with locals who had direct dealings with them. The popular press was fiercely anti-Māori as were the influential

sections of the Government. Governor Grey took a more lenient line; he did not want a repeat of the Taranaki and Waikato wars. Some Government officials resigned in protest. After offers of safe passage back to Waikato, none of which were trusted, Māori initiated their own departure. On 14 November 1864 in groups of 40, so as to avoid wholesale capture, they made their way down to Lower Matakana (Sandspit), crossed the Glen Eden/Matakana estuary, across Snells Beach in front of the Snell home, to the Mahurangi, and thence south to Waikato – 66 days of uneasy settlement on Tamahunga. No political heroics, no triumphal return, no peace negotiations. How close we got to a Northern war we will never know. Extracted from We Gathered Here – a History of Matakana, David R Grant, 2017. WAIPU MUSEUM

The Waipu Museum’s story and collection together document a microcosm of international migration from Scotland to Nova Scotia, via South Africa to Australia, and then to New Zealand, reflecting the spread of the British Empire of the time and the movement of its people. The Waipu Scots migration was a result of political and economic events and circumstances in Scotland between the 18th and 19th centuries. Following the Battle of Culloden, the Scots were not permitted to carry on their cultural traditions, including the wearing of tartan. Soon after, the Industrial Revolution saw the manufacture of woollen textiles become the dominant industry and many landowners cleared their land of crofters (farmers) in favour of sheep grazing. The Highland Clearances, spurred a mass migration of small farmers from the countryside to the coast and the larger cities of Britain. The upheaval and the desire for ownership of

land and prosperity caused a scattering of Scots around the world. Many Scots fled to Canada, however after some success in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) a very cold winter and crop failure resulted in a famine. The Rev. Norman McLeod and his followers built their own ships and set sail for Australia, trusting it would be their salvation, however their hopes were dashed when their arrival in Australia coincided with the gold rush and land prices soared. They stayed for a few years until they were able to leave for New Zealand, with the offer from Governor Grey to purchase land. Waipu’s Scottish story is unique in New Zealand, in that it was a singular community of nearly a thousand Scottish Nova Scotians who settled in the one region. The Waipu Museum is the first regional museum in New Zealand to have its documentary heritage collection inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register, alongside

the Treaty of Waitangi and the Sir Edmund Hillary archives. Experience this powerful story of one of the great migrations in New Zealand’s history and speak to a genealogist who will perhaps discover, on the database of over 50,000 descendants of the original Nova Scotian settlers, that you are also family, and belong to this internationally significant story. The Waipu Museum has a breathtaking and interactive exhibition, a UNESCO Memory of the World listed documentary heritage collection, and a gorgeous boutique gift shop. Open 7 days a week 9.30am - 4.30pm 36 The Centre, Waipu www.waipumuseum.com

MEMORY BOXES

The senses can very clearly and touchingly evoke memories from our past. A song can remind us of a special moment, a smell can unleash a cascade of feelings and touching familiar items can remind us of people or events that have happened throughout our life. It is with this in mind that volunteers at the Warkworth Museum set to making ‘Memory Boxes'. The aim being to provide a kit which can be used in reminiscence sessions to prompt conversation and provide mental and emotional stimulation. This is particularly effective for a person living with a memory-loss condition, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s or people suffering from strokes. Through stimulating those longer term memories, it helps stimulate the short term

memory, as well as boosting self esteem, opening up avenues for conversation between family members or carers and lifting depressed moods, creating a feeling of well being. The boxes include such themes as: ‘Gizmos and Gadgets’, ‘Glitz and Glamour’, ‘Washday’ and ‘School Days’, amongst the varying collection. “We used items that had been collected or donated to the project and are everyday pieces that people would be familiar with”, says curator Victoria Joule. The post office savers box in the ‘School Days’ kit would have been used by many in their childhood; or the box of washing powder, with its residual fragrance helping to stir perhaps the strongest of the memory senses, that of smell. These everyday items can spark a whole series

of memories that otherwise may have remained untouched or lost. They are available to rent from the Museum and have been popular with retirement villages in particular, but their value does not stop there. They are also a great time capsule, showing younger generations the essentials from ‘our day’. A classic Brownie camera, a floppy disk and a dial telephone are all items that younger generations love to handle, but they also mark how far we have journeyed to arrive at the current smartphones of today.

The Warkworth Museum team constantly change and develop displays to give an insight into the lives and pursuits of our pioneering families. From the past to the present, they have a magnificent display of history. There are numerous exhibits on the ground floor and on the first floor there are re-created rooms from the 1920’s, a corner store, school room, post office and more. Throughout the Museum there are clothing displays from 1890 to the 1950s. Situated next to the Parry Kauri Park you can also view the magnificent McKinney and Simpson kauri trees. WELLSFORD GENEALOGY GROUP

Wellsford Genealogy Group – Into the future Over the last forty years the Wellsford Genealogy group has been contending with huge changes in research, both ‘how to do it’ and ‘what you can expect to find’. Basic research principles remain – search back from what you know to what you want to find. Use of modern technology can be both exciting and terrifying to some people but groups that meet regularly are a great place for advice, expert help and inspiration. What you can find is also changing focus. DNA seems to be the ‘in’ thing to look at but it needs interpreting to get the most out of what you find. It is one thing to get possible matches, however the ‘paper trail’ to connect the dots still needs to be worked on to prove connections and this can

lead to many surprises, not the least the families who find a previously unknown ‘cuckoo’ in the nest. With the present trend away from formal marriages the DNA angle is going to be a valuable method to trace connections in the future. Research is however, what you make of it. Help is available through groups and local libraries who provide many free services; N.Z. Society of Genealogists and many other specialist groups exist.

HERITAGE TRAILS OF WARKWORTH WORDS DAVE PARKER

The founding history of Warkworth Township dates back as far as 1842 when a young John Anderson Brown was rowed up the historic Mahurangi River, in a whaleboat with a Maori crew (to discover its headwaters) and here he decided to live. Brown gained a timber-cutting licence and together with a Captain Kasper, established a water-powered mill by building the dam below Bridgehouse. Brown then developed the first flour mill on the banks of the river. In 1854 he purchased 153 acres from the Crown and named the site Warkworth, after his ancestral home (Warkworth Northumbria, UK) where his grandfather was a schoolmaster. Brown soon took on the role of the father of this settlement, becoming the town’s first postmaster, constable and was appointed chairman of the first Mahurangi Highway Board. Such are the stories told by local historian, Dave Parker who, many years ago, put together both a Walking and a Driving Heritage Trail of

Dave established a Visitor Information and Public Relations Centre seventeen years ago (now the Warkworth i-SITE), from which he runs a Walk-About Heritage Trail, offering the opportunity to learn more about the town’s heritage and buildings. The Wilson Cement industry, the pioneering families and their input to the development of a township and a business community, the establishment of the various churches and the contribution made by the district wide presence of the US Marines between 1942-44 are just some of the features of interest. His recommendations for the Driving Trail include Parry Kauri Park & District Museum, Cement Works, Kowhai Park Kilns and historic attractions of the surrounding district. He also offers a Heritage Excursion aboard the historic vessel ‘Jane Gifford’ as there is so much to learn about the Mahurangi River and the numerous historic

DESIGN HOUSE

TOTEM RETREAT PHOTOS

LOUISE

The sweeping north facing verandah and the light filtering through the trees are a perfect setting for a long evening in a home away from home, with friends on that verandah and bottomless glasses of wine. Oozing with eclectic style and romance this beauty was snapped up by Kate and Dave Arbuthnot nearly ten years ago, from Trademe. “The bones of the original house were great but the add-ons were rotten, in fact the day we moved in I fell through the floor!” says Kate. In the early days of the renovation, “the builders were working and the whole back wing of the house collapsed into the garden. By the time I arrived home that afternoon they’d bulldozed it into two massive piles and set fire to it. I thought, there was no way this is ever going to turn out okay! But it did.” If these walls could talk they may be able to fill in the missing pieces of the homestead’s history. “The original plans were lost in a council office flood. It was rumoured that someone put all the house plans in plastic rubbish sacks to be moved but they accidentally got thrown away,” Kate says. “We do know that it was the original homestead in the area built from rough-sawn Kauri off the land and owned by the Goodfellow family and later the Irwin family.” (If anyone can expand on this particular house’s history please share it with us at Junction Magazine, so we can to on.) As a stylist, Kate’s knack for hunting out pieces and bringing them together is enviable. For four years Kate was the proud founder and owner of ‘Fossick’, in Matakana Village, a collection of interiors and vintage treasures. With a natural eye for spotting the convertible, she buys whatever she falls in love with at second hand shops but the best often comes from the side of the road. “I figure out how I’m going to make them work... sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I also drag a lot of nature home with me, old bits of wood, big branches, collections of feathers, birds nests, and they all get displayed.”

who sent a team of designers to New Zealand for an inspirational recce. The result: a magical bushscape with kangaroos, woodpeckers and badgers! In an effort to simplify their life with three kids, they recently moved from their beloved valley into a 70m2 bach on the water at Snells Beach. It’s a full 180 degree flip. It does however mean that their Totem Retreat, in Whangaripo Valley, is on Air BnB and soon to have its own website. It may seem remote but it is located on one of the most beautiful roads you’ll drive. Along Whangaripo Valley Road and into Pakiri Road, all the way from Wellsford to Pakiri Beach is stunning. Then there are the locals! Every year a group of local girls, including Kate, throw together ‘The Whangaripo Wild Food Festival’. People come from far and wide for the day, with the most incredible wild and foraged food: seafood, rabbit and pukeko stews, swan wontons, snail paella, deep-fried crickets, wild turkey terrine, smoked eel, kawakawa shortbread and nasturtium ice-cream. There are kids roaring around, dogs weaving in and out of legs, beer flowing, tug-o-war and wife carrying contests. “It’s all just word of mouth and it’s wonderful madness,” says Kate. “I think it gives people, especially families, from the city somewhere to escape to for a relaxed, country experience. We put the bell tent up in the camping paddock in summer so kids can get a chance to sleep under the stars and roast marshmallows too.”

SAND ISLAND

For an experience that’s well off the beaten track, yet not too far from civilisation, plan a trip to a unique island with rare inhabitants.

ahead are the long white dunes of Sand Island and beyond, the silvery green waters of the Kaipara, with views to South Head and Pouto Point.

West of Wellsford, the Tapora Peninsula sprawls into the Kaipara Harbour, and at its tip – facing the harbour mouth - lies an island comprised entirely of sand. Manukapua Island, better known as Big Sand Island, is just offshore and sits within a wide, shallow area of the harbour that dries to firm sand flats at low tide, letting you explore it on foot.

The shores of the sand flats are dotted with clumps of reeds and grass and the expanse and the silence combine to create a powerfully eerie experience as you walk towards the island. Once there, there’s endless fascination in exploring the dunes and enjoying sightings of some of New Zealand’s rarest birds.

As you leave the road for the narrow sandy track that leads to the shore, you can be forgiven for wondering if you’ll ever arrive. Suddenly though, you emerge from the toi toi overhanging the track and an incredible panorama opens up. Directly

28

The island is home to thousands of birds throughout the year and is a designated wildlife refuge. It’s a favoured spot for our own endangered Fairy Terns and New Zealand Dotterel and in summer, it hosts migratory visitors from Siberia and Alaska, who have flown up to 13,000

kilometres to escape their harsh winters. Whether nesting or resting, the birds need space so dogs are not allowed on the island itself and people are encouraged to enjoy bird watching from a distance. You can walk all over and around the island, as well as explore the surrounding sand flats but of course, keep an eye on the incoming tide to make sure you stay dry. Getting there involves a 40 minute drive from Wellsford and you won’t find stores on the peninsula so pack a picnic and make it an adventure. www.visitwellsford.co.nz

WHAI AWA - WATERFRONT LIVING IN MANGAWHAI

Looking out over the tranquil water of the Mangawhai estuary, you see Te Whai Pa site, named after its rangitira (chief), Te Whai. The harbour was a hub for Māori regional, maritime travel and is renowned for its beauty. It is no surprise Mangawhai is one of the fastest developing regions in the North. The newly planned retail centre, childcare centres, schools, health practitioners and medical centres, mean that Mangawhai is becoming a popular choice for those looking to settle outside of the city. Located on the water’s edge, a short walk from the village centre, Whai Awa pays tribute to the history of the site and is a departure from typical subdivision design in Mangawhai. The 40 lot boutique development is spearheaded by Pro Land Matters and local, Jackson Worsfold. Jackson founded Dream Planning in 2005. Dream Planning is a multidisciplinary consultancy with a collaborative approach towards land development; providing services of resource management, urban design, town planning and project management. ADVERTORIAL

Jackson developed a passion for development and the desire to realise positive social, economic and environmental outcomes to create quality places for people to live in and enjoy. In 2015, he co-founded Pro Land Matters, a visionary, real estate development company. “Originally we designed the Whai Awa development to provide for a mixed density approach providing a range in housing options. I feel that regions and coastal towns experiencing considerable growth, such as Mangawhai, need a diversity of housing options to provide for people with different requirements at different stages of their lives.” The site offers the necessary attributes to deliver this but local residents and Council were resistant and ultimately the original design was amended to something a little less progressive. “Maybe we are a few years ahead of the game”. When it comes to rethinking residential development, Whai Awa is a step in the right direction. “It has been a profound learning experience for us. We’re proud of the work we’ve

done and it shows us where we are and where we can go.” Integrated with the natural topography of the site, the plan for Whai Awa includes sustainable stormwater treatment in the form of rain gardens; extensive streetscape planting, large level sections and a thorough building design guideline document to ensure a high quality built environment. Mangawhai is a flourishing community and a recreational paradise. Whai Awa, located centrally within Mangawhai Village, offers seaside tranquility with the amenities of village living. This aspirational address holds something truly special in a vibrant, high-growth region. Stage 1 is now on sale with level sections ranging in size from 710m2 to 1017m2. OASIS BAR & EATERY

It has been a hectic few months for the owner of The Oasis Bar and Eatery, Mangawhai. Liz Hutchin says, “ I got into action as it was only four weeks until Easter and I was determined to open if I could, and make a few changes.”

myself to do the best I can; I definitely got my work ethic from my parents who originally came from Samoa and resided in Herne Bay in the 1950s.”

In such a beautiful spot, she was keen to enhance it and turn it into an inviting place for everyone. The venue has such inviting charm and the freshly baked goods are to die for.

Since opening on Easter weekend , they have managed to deliver an eatery to be proud and the locals have been supportive. “We have amazing eateries in Mangawhai, so it is nice to give our locals and visitors another option,“ says Liz.

“I had just weeks to get cooks, staff, builders and menus all sorted. It was a mission, but very rewarding. I think I thrive on pressure! I challenge

A great spot to enjoy good old fashioned cooking, great organic coffee, friendly staff and great atmosphere.

FEOH ESPRESSO

Over the past two years locals have watched and wondered as the 130-yearold Kauri cottage, bordering the river across from Waipu township, was first positioned then completely renovated on the site known locally as ‘the pageant ground’ close to where the first Nova Scotian settlers landed in 1854. The cottage has its own special pedigree. With an external face-lift and an extensive internal revamp the historic and picturesque building now grandly houses Skin Image, Waipu - a boutique skin health and beauty clinic at the front and Feoh Espresso - a steam-punk espresso bar opening onto a large deck at the back. Nina Quan and Riki Taiaroa are the inspiration behind Waipu’s newest venture, which opened to the public on New Years Day. Riki will be open during what he calls the ‘fringe’ hours – 7am to 10am and again from 4pm to 7pm catering for people who want excellent coffee outside mainstream café hours. His is a truly unique method of coffee preparation, honed to perfection over months and designed to allow ‘infinite flexibility’ in the coffee his customers can experience. Riki’s focus is on different origins of coffee rather than alternative milks or syrups. He offers coffees from up to five single origins, a ‘I can’t believe it’s decaf’ decaf and the award-winning Supreme blend. Although not a typical café with a full food menu, Feoh Espresso will offer a few unique foods like fresh Vietnamese rice paper rolls with Nina’s family’s secret dipping sauce and real Mosgiel Cheese Rolls. “There are great choices in Waipu for tourists and visitors, but before the day begins and when the day ends, where can the locals go that is special and just for them,” said Riki. “If visitors find us that’s fine, but our focus is the local community”. 86 The Centre, Waipu www.facebook.com/feohespressowaipu

ART

JUDY WOOD WORDS REBECKA

Judy Wood’s mum used to say to her: “With thumbs like those, you should be a potter”. She resisted her mum’s advice for as long as she could, until one afternoon in 1969, when she put her two small girls into a creche and gave it a go. She’s been hooked on clay ever since. Deep in the Dome Valley bush, Judy creates her magnificent sculptures, as well as teaching others the art and joy of playing with clay. “I came to this district with the intention of building a kiln and making pottery – I had acquired a thousand bricks for one hundred dollars. Moving the bricks twice convinced me it was time to buy a place where I could put them down, and never have to move them again. That’s when I found this piece of land in Dome Valley,” says Judy. In 1979, Judy began building a workshop, so she could make a living for herself and her children. “I lived without electricity with three children for months. The children slept in an army hut, which I had picked up from Sandspit in exchange for a casserole. It was pretty basic, but it was marvellous!”

“Before that, I lived in Kaipara Flats for a few years, together with a whole colony of potters. Peter Lange, Jeff Hilliam, Joop and Willi Kuiper, Helen Johnson and Peter Oxborough. Some went on to do great things.” After an inspiring trip to Japan in the early 1980s, Warkworth Town Potters was formed: a cooperative of eleven local artists. “We started with a little shop in the corner of Baxter and Percy, which is now a hairdresser. We expanded and took over another shop. And so, the Warkworth Craft Gallery Cooperative was started. It was amazing.” Judy was in charge of exhibitions, and the business was very successful for 20 years. But in 2011 her beloved partner of 30 years passed away. “When Bill became ill, life changed. Following Bill’s death, I had a break from clay for many years through my grieving process. For a year I did nothing but just get through the day. After five years, I went back to school and started over. “Through this, I have learnt to live by myself, be happy by myself and propel myself. To take my

enthusiasm and motivation back.” Judy’s next adventure will take her to the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei. “They have a new, beautiful and huge wood-fired kiln. There’s a certain romance to wood-firing, the process of constantly poking wood into a kiln, sometimes for days. The effects of fire and ash on the clay can be achieved no other way,” says Judy. “I want to create sculptures bigger than me. They are going to be so big that I won’t be able to move them!” For information on upcoming clay courses and workshops at Judy Wood’s studio, email: judywood999@gmail.com 24 May to 6 June. SIMPLY COFFEE PODS Everyone loves freshly ground coffee delivered straight to your cup, in your own home and that’s where coffee capsules have grown in popularity. There is rising concern over their impact on the environment and one local company is driving to make sure a process exists to help reduce that impact. Coffee Capsules 2U have invented a homegrown recycle process right here in Warkworth. It’s hands on, it’s messy and it’s very real. They separate out the coffee to use as organic compost. The capsules are ground into an aggregate that is used to make lightweight concrete and this is all used to build our market garden growing local food for local people. Why fill up landfills when it is so easy to go good? You can feel good about your daily cuppa and it is easy to be part of a local initiative making a positive contribution to our environment. www.coffeecapsules2u.co.nz 0274 809 507

MAHU BIKE & SKATE PARK WARKWORTH SKATEPARK CONCEPT DESIGN DOCUMENT Warkworth Showgrounds, SH1

02/18

Mahu Bike and Skate Park is the vision of a group of Warkworth parents who are driven by the desire to have a bike and skate reserve available for everyone in the community. The nearest skate parks are at least 30 minutes away and the bike park is an hours drive, combining that with the growing population in Warkworth it made sense to develop something locally. After some great conversations with Mahurangi Sport & Recreation Collective (who are the incorporated collective of the sports based at the Warkworth Showgrounds), they were offered some interesting terrain at the Showgrounds and that was when the idea started to really take flight. The initial concept was presented to the Rodney Local Board and as a result the group was given a grant to get some plans drawn up. Those plans have been designed by Richard Smith from Rich Landscapes, who has designed many parks nationwide, with input from Byron Scott from Trailpro, of FourForty MTB park fame. The result is a design for a park that caters for beginners to intermediate and advanced skills and encompasses: learn-to-ride/road safety area, asphalt pump track, skatepark, downhill

mountain bike park, bike skills area and cross-country tracks. There is also potential for a dirt pump track and further cross-country tracks in the future. Currently the group are arranging to present the concept plans at local schools, community events and to other local groups in the hope of further input and ideas. They will then meet again with the Rodney Local Board to discuss the public feedback and the final approval process. They really want this to be a project the community can feel ownership of. There will be lots of consultation throughout the process and plenty of chances to sponsor areas of the park or even be involved in build or landscaping days.

planning a series of information plaques around the village. The community group is helping them achieve this.

Their first project was conceived by Scott McCallum who said, “We should create a walking/ cycle track from Matakana to Omaha joining up with the Point Wells Track,” and so they did.

The community group meets on the first Thursday of the month, usually in the small meeting room behind the village hall. Every third month a larger group meeting is held in the village hall, and it is planned to have a ‘town hall’ meeting once a year to workshop ideas and encourage greater participation.

Since then, the group, along with the Council, has been instrumental in initiating and following through on the footbridge beside Plume café; a children’s playground; footbridge at Tamahunga Drive; the tennis Court upgrade; the free parking area by the school; tree and shrub planting along Matakana Road and a community garden. Projects planned for the future include drains along Matakana Valley road to be filled in, and footpaths improved, and a walk/cycle track around the perimeter of the village. The community group encourages locals to bring along a project and ask the community group to work with them. This is being done to an exciting degree, for example Alison and David Grant (‘We Are Gathered Here’ author) with Phil Morris are

HAPPENINGS

WHANGATEAU FOLK CLUB WORDS

JENINE

World Class Music Made 100% Local. Midway between Matakana and Leigh sits a little-known jewel, the Whangateau Hall. Built 120 years ago, this lovingly maintained building is home to weddings, arts groups, community support and most popularly the Whangateau Acoustic Music and Social Club, known locally as the “Folk Club.” On the last Monday of every month, musicians and lovers of acoustic music come together. With ticket prices ranging between $5 and $20, the Whangateau Folk Club nights provide some of the most affordable live music around. During the busy summer season there are full concerts by visiting acts. In the slower winter months club nights carry on, encouraging locals and visitors to come out and mingle with their neighbours over the halftime cup of tea and biscuits, while enjoying performances by local musicians and visiting New Zealand artists. The Whangateau “anchor band” The Pipi Pickers always bring energy with their fast-paced bluegrass music.

and 60s/70s covers. This will be a special Neighbouring Planets show as they will be joined by double bass player Joe Stodart. Whether you are local or just visiting the area, make sure you check the Whangateau Hall website or Facebook Page. You never know who you might get to hear perform. www.whangateau.co.nz www.facebook.com/whangateauhall

“Folk” or “Acoustic” music can be difficult to define. At Whangateau it means any music that can be played without the assistance of electronics. The stunning timber ceiling and fully restored hardwood floor of the hall create a beautiful acoustic environment, particularly complementary to folk music and very little amplification is needed for even the gentlest of performers to be heard perfectly throughout the hall. You won’t find loud drum kits, electric guitars or a DJ at Whangateau. Everything else is fair game. The April club night (Monday, 30th April) guests are Martha and the Backseat Drivers. Martha Louise is a long-standing, highly respected and talented member of the New Zealand folk community. Coming up on Monday, May 28th, the club night guest is “Neighbouring Planets,” a folk duo consisting of Yvette Audain (vocals, clarinet, saxophone and other wind instruments) and Dix Ozier (guitar and vocals) playing an eclectic mix of original compositions
