LOCAL FLAVOUR, GLOBAL TASTE WORDS
A scenic road winds out to the small coastal community of Leigh - 15 minutes drive from Matakana, it’s the home of Leigh Fisheries. Originally founded as a co-op by pioneering fishermen in 1957, it’s humming and busy, operating from its original site at 10 Pakiri Road. In the last sixty years, it has developed from a local smokehouse to a dynamic, global business; an expert in supplying high quality, fresh-as-itgets, wild caught fish. Inside the chilled processing rooms of Leigh Fisheries works a tight-knit, efficient team sorting and packing the latest fresh catch caught between Houhora in the north and Leigh in the south, plus some in Tauranga. Tom Searle, operations manager, lifts lids of icy bins revealing a colourful array of fish which includes metallic grey Blue Nose, polka-dot Snapper and an almighty Hapuka destined for
ZOE
Omaha’s Sculptureum restaurant. Snapper is the predominant species caught, along with Gurnard, John Dory, Trevally and Tarakihi. A small percentage of sought-after fish are caught at the same time, such as the brilliantly orange Scorpion Fish and the silver Frost Fish. Many species caught and handled here are completely unique globally and most are shipped whole. A trade relationship with Japan during the 80s and 90s saw a high standard of produce achieved as the most discerning seafood nation on Earth demanded the best. The ‘Ike-Jimi’ method was learned - a swift, humane way of killing the fish which results in cleaner meat. Adopted from their Asian clientele’s translation, the company’s brand name spelling of ‘Lee’, for their supplying arm, was acquired at this time. Today, the Lee Fish group has sister companies in NZ, Asia, the US and Europe which market and distribute seafood

to restaurants, supermarkets and wholesalers around the globe. Leigh Fisheries, the parent company which does the catching, retains its original spelling. Lee Fish's whole business model is about having produce delivered to buyers as soon as possible; enabling a level of freshness that’s unique to them. If you’re a chef in Auckland, you’ll have yesterday’s prime catch in time for dinner service. If you’re in Sydney, there’s just 24 hours from your fish being pulled from the sea to it landing on your plate. Another main difference is their dedication to sustainable practice. An ethos of quality over quantity is evident. Alongside honouring NZ’s Quota Management Systems, their main catch method is long-lining. Unlike trawling, longlining has minimal impact on the seafloor’s
unique ecosystem. Fish are caught individually on circle hooks, brought up and handled one at a time which is more humane and results in better produce. This small-scale process enables fishers to better manage their practice. Each box of produce is labelled with the day, species, vessel and even who caught it. “It’s not just the quota they abide by, it’s also how they are handled and the end product that is delivered to the buyer there’s accountability through the whole process,” Tom says. The fishers are independent (as opposed to employees) and many of them tend to be from local, generational fishing families. Sam Birch manages sales and marketing for Lee Fish NZ - a Leigh boy originally, his father was a ‘long-liner’. “The culinary scene has really developed in NZ in the last 5-10 years,” says Sam. “A lot of kiwi chefs were away overseas... working with Lee Fish, then they started coming back and asking for us. We work closely with 38 of the metro top 50 restaurants - Cocoro,
Orphan’s Kitchen, Cassia, Sky City’s The Grill, Masu, Waiheke’s Archive and Mudbrick…” The list goes on to include top restaurants in Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Locally, Sawmill Brewery and Sculptureum are huge supporters. “What they do is very creative, very different” Sam enthuses. Awareness of ethical and sustainable practices continues to grow in the food industry. Buyers and diners both have a keen interest and there’s a real sense of provident management of resources while speaking with Sam. “We strive for transparency in our relations,” Sam says, “It’s very rich. The whole food world is moving that way.” Impressively, within the workings of this fastpaced operation, there’s daily contact with chefs - an integrated communication system courses through the business. “It’s a beautiful thing,” says Sam, “we are breaking down the barrier between the producer and the buyer, the fishermen and the chefs.”
In a tradition as old as the ocean is deep, Leigh Fisheries has been the life-blood of the community for 50 years and these days they are still a massive employer in the region. “We are touching the tables in the wider community,” says Tom. Leigh Fisheries continues their generous involvement in the community by donating to Leigh and Matakana schools’ annual fundraisers and supporting local events and groups such as Leigh Bowling Club, Bridge Club and Returned Services. From humble beginnings, Lee Fish now has a wide reach around the globe inspiring an antithesis to mainstream commercial fishing and expectations of quality. This is a company founded on initiative, innovation and excellence.

GAGE FORREST LAUGHTON: FROM WAYBY TO THE WORLD WORDS
Kayaking over waterfalls and rockslides might seem adventurous, but for 12-year-old Gage Forrest Laughton, it’s just an average weekend. For the last five years, the Wellsford youngster has delighted fans around the world with his daredevil kayak descents. “I’m determined and I just focus on the outcome,” he says. “I do get scared if it’s massive, but I try not to think about it.” Gage was just seven when he embarked on his first paddling trip with his father Lee and sister Darcie, then 12. Both kids found the gentle lake waters ‘a bit boring’. So Lee, a former competitive paddler and multisport athlete, introduced the children to whitewater paddling on grade one rapids in the Karangahake Gorge. “I just loved the way the boat moved on the water,” Gage recalls. A few weeks later, Lee snapped a photo of Gage descending a grade three waterfall on a neighbour’s farm in Wayby Valley. He sent the

image to a Canadian paddling magazine and the picture went viral. “Gage was a bit of a freak doing this at just seven years old,” says Lee. “People loved it!” “I never expected the reaction, but it felt amazing,” says Gage. “It made me really get into paddling.” Sponsors called and gear began arriving in the post. Soon Gage was tackling bigger rapids, like the Kaituna River near Rotorua. “People wanted more, so I encouraged him to go further,” recalls Lee. By age nine, Gage was feeling the pressure. “We drove seven hours to a waterfall and he refused to paddle,” Lee recalls. “I felt like Homer Simpson! I told the sponsors we had to slow down. “And now I just let Gage lead. If he’s not begging to go paddling, there’s no point. Once I stopped pushing, he excelled.” The family regularly travels around the North Island looking for backwater creeks and rivers
where Gage can be recognised for the ‘first descent’, carrying gear three or four kilometres up dirt tracks to find access. Last year Gage became the youngest person to tackle ten-metre Tawhai Falls, near Ruapehu. “I looked at it and thought "I’m going back to the truck.’” With support from Darcie and Lee, he pushed on. “Dad and I look at the river from the shore and work out the safest route. Then I just go do it and enjoy it.” “I know his limits and find challenges I believe he can cope with,” says Lee. “There have been times we’ve got in the water and called it off. Safety comes first.” That’s not to say there haven’t been a few spills. “I was dragged against a rock wall on the Kaituna,” says Gage. “The adrenaline was going pretty hard.” Despite just finishing year seven at Wellsford Primary School, Gage has already taken multiple medals at the national secondary schools

kayaking championships. Last winter, he earned further accolades when he tried archery, taking the national under-13 bow hunting title in his first season. “It was quite cool to discover a whole new sport I can do at the same time as kayaking.” Archery, he says, is also about determination. “I need to focus inwards and stop worrying about the other kids.” As for the future? “People ask if I want to go to the Olympics, but I don’t really think about medals. I’ve been invited to paddle the Zambezi and I’d love to go to the States.” For now he’ll spend summer camping around the North Island in their converted farm trailer with Lee, Darcie, border collie Buddy and a well-regarded paddler visiting from the UK. “I’m looking forward to paddling with a new face and showing him around.”

EARTH’S KITCHEN
“It has always been about something more,” says Jules as her tale unfolds. With her career in nursing leading to Sister-in-charge of the surgical ward in Harley St. London, looking after royalty in the Royal and Military hospital, she knew there was a different world to explore. Something from her childhood and upbringing constantly stirred within. She was the far-away child that seemed as if she was away with the fairies; probably because she was! Having been brought up in a political landscape, while a nature baby at heart, she developed an interesting perspective of the world – one of hope, curiosity, exploration and faith in humanity’s potential to do better. This pull back to Nature was deafening. Jules left her Surgical Nursing career of 15 years and immersed herself deeply into the heart of India where, after living there for some time, she had an epiphany – in the shape of a motorbike accident. It changed her life. In a remote area, covered in blood and in a world of pain, far from any village let alone a hospital, she lay on the gravel road pondering the seriousness of her situation when she heard soft foreign voices approaching - women and children soon helped her and her friend into their mud hut. Gently but diligently, these beautiful strangers started washing the wounds with coconut milk, then sterilising with coconut toddy. The children had heated coconut milk with some herbs from the garden, which were offered in coconut shell cups. Strips of coconut meat were placed tenderly over the jagged wounds and beautiful meals cooked over an earthen oven. The next morning after a very restful and suspected opiate-aided sleep, Jules couldn’t believe her eyes – the wounds had already started to pink over! To Jules amazement and delight, she had just witnessed healing straight from the heart of Nature and the kindness of strangers. This led to a journey spanning 10 years where Jules learned of ancient healing techniques and alchemical methods with Indigenous cultures all around the world.

Jules came home to New Zealand and gained her triple diplomas of Medical Herbalism, specialising in Rongoa (Native NZ Bush Medicine), Naturopathy and Traditional Body Therapies. She quenched her adrenaline thirst and community spirit by becoming a volunteer ambulance officer in Mangawhai by night and running her natural health clinic by day.
Selling out of her natural skincare remedies each week and being booked out at her clinic was proof enough that the world was ready for these natural therapies. Other practitioners and her clients were wanting to stock her eczema crème and healing bush balms and very quickly international companies took a vested interest in her unique formulas. It took Jules 18 years to perfect her natural sunscreen, persistently pushing past the naysayers. “They said it couldn’t be done – that it’s impossible,” Bright says of the Lab’s response to her statement that she’d succeeded in formulating a 100% natural sunscreen that is SPF50 and invisible. Bringing together her nursing and naturopathy experience, alongside her learnings on her travels, gave this determined spirit confidence she could make it happen. “Our coral reefs are dying at a phenomenal rate, our forests are being chopped down – 80% of our plants are found nowhere else on Earth and our health is failing due to the chemicals we are dumping on all of it. It must stop and we have the solution right here. We can grow our own sunscreen and take that medicine straight to the reefs to heal them and not poison them.” Bright is passionate about getting her World’s 1st sunscreen out there. It is Biogro-certified natural (100% ingredients certified), SPF50, water resistant for 2 hours, certified non-GMO, cruelty-free and with a soft silky finish. Hawaii, Mexico and Palau Islands have passed a bill banning chemical sunscreen due to its proven toxicity and killing of coral. Jules is branching out to the Hawaiian market this year to launch her next-level sunscreen there, in a much-needed market with over 10 million tourists visiting per year. “Although it took me 18 years to perfect my formula, science and law have aligned, so it is actually right on time,” Jules smiles.

FOLIAGE WITH FLAIR WORDS
We all know houseplants bring style and substance to any home or workspace - enhancing the look and feel, creating comfort and calm. The health benefits of indoor plants, however, aren’t quite so well understood. Let’s start with the bad news. Modern living and the materials used in construction and fitout have caused a significant increase in toxins within our indoor spaces. Any number of ‘nasties’ can be found in the average home or workplace. Trichloroethylene is commonly found in varnishes, paints and adhesives, while formaldehyde is often present in carpets, furniture, and foam insulation. Benzene can be found in the likes of plastics, synthetic fibres and detergents. There’s considerable debate about the impact of chemicals like these, but many people believe that they can create health issues ranging from asthma and nausea to chronic illness. It’s hard to get around having those toxins in our lives as using completely natural materials can very challenging and expensive. The good news is that, in 1989, NASA discovered that some houseplants have the ability to effectively filter the air and remove pollution, resulting in a significant improvement to indoor air quality. Houseplants do this by absorbing harmful gases through their leaves and roots and the microorganisms that live in the soil help neutralise volatile, organic compounds and other pollutants. Studies since then have shown that plant-filtered rooms have 50 to 60% less airborne microbes (like mould spores and bacteria) and that houseplants are not only a natural, cost-effective and therapeutic way to reduce toxins in our air, they’re also able to improve people’s mood, increase productivity, enhance concentration and memory and reduce stress and fatigue.

very fashionable right now, boasting structural beauty and easy-care characteristics. 2 - Peace Lily / Spathiphyllum These low maintenance beauties remove both formaldehyde and benzene from the air, as well as acetone - a carcinogen commonly found in nail polish and paint. Capable of lifting humidity levels of a room by up to 5 percent, they’re ideal for dry environments like office spaces. 3 - Golden Pothos / Epipremnum Aureum These also rank very highly on the list of effective air purifying plants. They are capable of removing benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air. Vining or trailing with their distinctive leaf markings, Golden Pothos are easy-care and can survive well in low-light. 4 - Dracaena Warneckii Dracaena “Warneckii” effectively removes benzene from the air and is popular with the plantscape industry, thanks to their ability to survive the low-light conditions and dry air of commercial office buildings. 5 - Heartleaf Philodendron / Philodendron Cordatum This gorgeous vining or trailing plant can remove formaldehyde from the air and is also very popular for its easy-care characteristics and ability to cope with low light situations. 6 - Snake Plant / ‘Mother in Law’s Tongue’ / Sansevieria
But which houseplants to choose? Here are 10 of the best air-purifying houseplants you can buy locally:
These plants are hugely ‘on trend’, thanks to their striking, strong lines and easy-care requirements while also being hugely effective air purifiers as they remove benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene. Great to have in the bedroom because, while some plants take in oxygen during the night, the snake plant continues to emit oxygen, naturally refreshing the air while you sleep.
1 - Rubber plant / Ficus Robusta
7 - Aloe Vera
Ficus Robusta featured very highly on NASA's scoring due to their amazing ability to remove formaldehyde from indoor air, while requiring less light than many other plants. These plants are

heal cuts. Aloe Vera also releases oxygen during dark hours, leaving your night-time air fresher and cleaner, encouraging more restful sleep. It looks great and is notoriously easy to care for too! 8 - ZZ Plant / Zamioculcas zamiifolia Even if you neglect them and keep them in a lowlight room, there’s a good chance these droughttolerant, disease-resistant, super-cool looking succulents will do just fine. Zamioculcas helps to maintain balanced internal humidity and can reduce the concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) in indoor air. 9 - Kentia Palm / Howea Forsteriana One of the most graceful and popular palms, the Kentia is tolerant of most indoor environments and is great at removing chemical toxins and releasing moisture into the air. 10 - Spider Plant / Chlorophytum Comosum The humble Spider Plant is, in fact, an amazing natural air purifier. NASA’s study showed that these plants can remove up to 90% of formaldehyde in the air surrounding them. They are another very low maintenance plant, able to thrive in a wide variety of conditions. Sounds easy, but there is a catch! Many indoor (and outdoor) plants might be dangerous to children or pets in certain circumstances. Be sure to research your plants carefully, and get the right ones for your situation.

Enjoying the summer sun in Mangawhai truly is magical when you’re relaxing with family or friends. Glen and Nicola from Tara Retreat reckon so and have spent the past seven years transforming their property on Tara Road into an alternate destination for groups of family or friends to get the most out of their holidays or weekends away. Their rural getaway has five unique accommodation options: a self-contained studio, a handcrafted cob cottage, a gypsy house-truck lined with native timbers, a renovated retro caravan and a comfy glamping tent. Glen advises guests to “get in first or draw straws as to who goes where!” Glen and Nic want guests to make themselves at home by creating a fun and relaxed zone where five couples, or two or three small families, can gather together for privacy and play. Tara Retreat covers two acres of growing native bush, orchard trees, citrus and banana groves and vege and herb gardens that guests are welcome to help themselves to for fresh, organic produce. A central focus is an outdoor kitchen where parties can meet up for a BBQ, listen to some tunes and dine al fresco together. One pre-Christmas guest on a de-stress break from Auckland found Tara Retreat to be her “kind of vibe”. She said, “We had an amazing time in Mangawhai all thanks to your incredible wee retreat and friendliness! Will be staying again in the near future, quite often. I’ve found my little slice of paradise that’s still close to home”. Tara Retreat also has an onsite yoga studio (which magically turns into a dance floor at night) where Glen runs regular classes and private sessions, also a massage studio and herbal dispensary, where Nic treats clients and guests with massage and natural medicine. After holding a successful yoga and walking retreat in 2018 and garnering fresh ideas travelling through the US and Mexico over our winter, Glen and Nic have more Yoga and Movement retreats in the pipeline. Tara Retreat also offers bespoke retreats, where couples or larger groups can enjoy mini getaways tailored to their own perfect mix of massage treatments, yoga sessions, guided walks and other activities and yummo organic vegan meals. Future developments include a cob pizza oven and a wood-fired cobwood sauna and plunge pool. Follow them on Facebook to keep up-to-date as Glen may be calling for a bunch of “cobstompers” this autumn! Other upcoming projects involve collaborations with local accommodation and service providers and hosting Tara Retreat as a space that allows inspiring teachers, artists and practitioners to run their own retreats. The Easter holidays have just become available for a whole group booking and Nic and Glen are welcoming inquiries now.

LET’S GO BACK TO TAP
A local Waipu graphic designer Emma McLean is on track to establish a project which combines art and technology to solve real, social and environmental issues. The concept ‘Wai Tai Tokerau’, is to be established in 2020, in partnership with the environmental education and promotion organization Love Kaipara; if they are successful in their application to the Ministry of the Environment in May. The project entails the procurement and implementation of portable, event water-stations which will also promote, educate and change waste minimisation behaviours at events and in public spaces. “Plastic Pollution is a global environmental problem and a huge issue we need to address at all levels of community and local government,” she says. “Approximately 78% of plastic bottles aren’t being recycled in New Zealand. We believe the best way to minimise waste is to stop it at its source by offering free water at events or in public spaces. Recently the economics of recycling has
become ever more challenging in New Zealand, so we also need to think before the recycling bin.” McLean, director of Hue Creative, says, “After working in design and marketing for over 12 years, I wanted to do something positive in an industry which impacted the environment.” Hue Creative currently produces work for business, government, community and philanthropic enterprises throughout Northland and through this work has made important relationships with the local community and potential stakeholders. While McLean is thrilled to have had positive feedback from potential funders when she met them in November last year, she is looking for a secondary backer in Kaipara or Bream Bay to help get the project off the ground. The difference with their proposed water station is a design feature to have interchangeable graphics on them which would play a vitally important role in educating and promoting behavioural changes while also offering a solution to our plastic crisis. “It takes very little effort to
simply look at a picture - our mind connects the dots. That’s why graphic design is so important. The messages we can send are extremely powerful and wide-reaching,” Mclean says. After the three years funding to get the project established, she believes a sustainable business model could then be renting out the advertising space to fund the cost of setup and maintenance. Emma explains, “With the environment at the core of this marketing concept, it would help turn the tide on the 17,000 pieces per square kilometre, of plastic floating in our ocean”. “The water industry is a billion-dollar industry. We are trying to challenge the mindset of water being something else we have to buy,” Emma says. “Water is essentially free, so how much are we really paying for that plastic bottle?” For more information go to www.meetpat.com.au

ESSENTIAL OILS - A NATURAL CHOICE
When she started her Midlife Courage coaching business five years ago, friends suggested Sharleen Greer needed a product line to complement her practice. Two years ago she took their advice, after discovering DoTerra essential oils. Having always worked in the health and wellness industry, collecting Diplomas in Nursing, Naturopathy and Life Coaching, Sharleen now collects essential oils too. At midlife, Sharleen’s sleep routine changed, which is an issue she hears about all too often from clients. After years of trying allopathic and natural remedies, she says, “It was the essential
oils that finally came to my rescue. I then started integrating the oils into my life, replacing cleaning products, adding oils to my natural first aid kit and detoxing the bathroom cabinet.” Sharleen now works with midlife women who are also craving effective sleep patterns and are looking for natural solutions for midlife health and happiness. Many of these clients are becoming grandparents and are choosing the pure and potent oils as gifts, rather than the usual cuddly toy or merino jumpsuit. New mums are also getting in touch wanting to learn more about essential oils to complement

their natural approach to parenting. “I am shocked by the number of babies having severe skin complaints, allergies and other health issues. I believe cleaning products are one of the many contributing factors. Labelling is very loose, ‘Keep out of reach of children,’ and ‘seek medical advice if swallowed.’ What is this telling you?” Greer says. Essential oils can also help children and teenagers who are experiencing anxious feelings. “I am having requests from physio’s, daycares, schools, real estate agents, beauticians and gyms. People wanting diffusers and oils to have healthier work environments for their staff and clients. These are remedies humans have been using for centuries and now everyone is reconnecting to them and choosing them for wellness,” says Sharleen. To learn more about doTerra essential oils and creating healthier homes and cultivating a more natural holistic approach to wellness, contact Sharleen. One-on-one wellness consultations are offered and classes can be taken at your home. FOR THE LOVE OF FARMING WORDS
Whilst farming has a tendency to dislodge well made plans at the best of times, the hotter, drier months tend to put pay to any planning at all. On paper, it’s a relatively quiet time of year shearing, weaning and dipping are all completed before Christmas, along with buying and selling cattle. But it’s water that keeps farmers on their toes, interrupting BBQs and camping trips over the summer holidays. 80-90% of their stock are reliant on troughs for their drinking water. A bull or cow in the summer will drink around 80 litres a day, so when one manages to pull a water pipe apart, or knock a ballcock off, you can pretty quickly have not just one trough down, but a whole block on the farm without water. Many an amazing Kaipara Harbour sunset has been watched from somewhere out on the farm while waiting to make sure that every animal has water to drink in their paddocks. “If you’re on holiday in the north of Auckland this summer, here are some animal statistics for you: We have about 220,000 sheep in Auckland and about the same number of cattle (beef and dairy).” Auckland farmer Nicky Berger says. “Add horticulture, viticulture and aquaculture, and
NICKY

you’ll soon realise that we are still very much a food growing region, despite the massive increase in human population and cars.” With a farming community comes farming activities – shifting stock and tractors along local roads, noise, the life (and death) of animals, and early morning helicopter flights come to mind as being factors that people don’t necessarily consider when deciding to move to a rural area. “Many small rural communities such as ours have been rejuvenated as people have moved to the country, and I hope that people continue to embrace the noise, smell and occasional inconvenience that goes with farming.” says Nicky. “Sometimes when you tell someone you’re a farmer they assume that your work is moving a few mobs in every morning and a couple of times a year you get a bit busier because of shearing or docking. Next time you catch up with a farmer, be curious, and really drill down into what their business looks like,” suggests Berger. Many farmers are running incredibly interesting, multifaceted businesses balancing markets, pasture, animals and bigger strategies to ensure their
business remains strong and sustainable. After almost 20 years in the sheep and beef sector, Nicky continues to be moved by the energy and passion she sees at a farm level and at a sector level. Like all vocations, farmers are always evolving as individuals and as a group. The cycle of action, reflection and action propels farmers forward, and helps with identifying solutions, rather than staying fixated on problems. “It’s such an exciting time to be a farmer and I’m grateful to be part of it.” On a final note, 2018 proved to be a record lambing percentage for New Zealand. The guys at NZ Farming went looking for causation and may have hit the nail on the head when they spotted that 2018 also saw a proliferation of rams with mullets. Coincidence? Nicky thinks not. ‘GrassFed in the City’ is an engagement project founded by Nicky Berger and fellow farmer (and Auckland Balance Farm Environment Award Winner) Clare Dill to share perspectives from both sides of the farming gate.

MASTER CRAFTSMEN
VINTAGE NOTIONS WITH SUSTAINABLE RESOLVE The idea for eek! vintage clothing started percolating around the time Marla Ferguson’s youngest daughter entered primary school and she noticed New Zealand’s focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. Over the next few years, more attention in the media was being paid to the environmental impact of the fashion industry as a whole, especially fast fashion. After attending university in the United States, Marla had spent her early career working in publishing, writing and editing, including working for the clothing company Patagonia (based in Ventura, California). The experience made her keenly aware of the pollution fibre and clothing production can have on the environment. So she began making clothing for children out of vintage or upcycled fabrics and notions, calling it eek! vintage. “I aim to make all my clothing and my children’s clothing out of at least 80% of supplies that might otherwise end up in landfills,” Marla says. She focuses on purchasing fabrics that are high-quality natural fibres and uses quality construction techniques, so the clothing can be passed down. Marla’s maternal family were tailors from Switzerland, so fabric and sewing always played a big role in her upbringing. Collecting vintage fabrics had always been a passion and over the years her collection grew to include trims, buttons, patterns and other notions. When she and her partner decided to move their family to New Zealand five years ago, her vintage sewing collection came with her. Marla enthuses, “The patterns and colours (of vintage fabric) are amazing! I couldn’t leave them behind.” And New Zealand had plenty of vintage fabrics on offer at the local op shops, so the collection continued to grow. During her years at Patagonia clothing, she always appreciated the clothing brand’s repair policy and commitment to the environment and has instituted a similar policy for her own clothing line, “I want eek! clothing to last,” says Marla. Damage due to wear-and-tear can be mended at a reasonable cost. All eek! vintage clothing is made in New Zealand using vintage or upcycled fabrics and notions. All items are unique. Currently, Marla is making children’s clothing but is in the process of developing patterns for adult clothing to be made sustainably. “I try to use every centimetre of the fabric I can,” explains Marla. Offcuts often end up in bibs and bags, also for purchase.

TE ARAI LODGE
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra. It is this attention to all those “extra” details which sets this exciting, new venture apart from others. Te Arai Lodge is a new ‘Homestay’ Boutique Luxury Lodge designed, built, developed and run by Vince and Kathy Moores and their family. Surrounded by over 20 acres of ancient podocarp forest and native bush, Te Arai Lodge sits on an elevated ridge with panoramic views across the rolling hills of the Brynderwyn Ranges out to the stunning beaches and surrounding islands of the Mangawhai coast. The property was featured on Grand Designs in 2018 and opened to the public mid-December that year, with the aspiration of becoming one of the world’s, great, family-run,

small boutique luxury lodges. It is inspired by the beauty of the surrounding native flora and bird life and the owner’s passion for sustainability, organic garden-to-table dining, their love of hospitality and for meeting people from all around the world. Vince and Kathy found their unique plot of land over 15 years ago and embarked on a long-term sustained pest eradication initiative, trapping possums, stoats and rats, together with the planting of over 4,000 native trees and plants. This initiative has resulted in the regeneration of native birdlife in the region and subsequently makes the lodge an idyllic spot for bird watching. The lodge is inspired by the stone clad villas of Tuscany and Provence where the family has
holidayed over the years. Much of the property uses Te Kuiti Limestone and features small stone walls, paved courtyards and extensive raised gardens and plantings. One of the most impressive features of the lodge is the “Great Room”, an atrium-style lounge, dining and kitchen area that is framed by giant scissor trusses to reinforce the soaring height of the main living area. Everything is on a grand scale, with a double-sided, stone-clad, open fireplace and the bespoke kitchen that leads out to a covered BBQ area and the raised garden beds where freshly grown produce is harvested for the table. Either side of the main atrium are two fully selfcontained wings with separate outside access. The ‘Kotare Cottage’ and ‘Kereru Suite’ are both
beautifully appointed and feature gas fireplaces, air-conditioning, complimentary minibars and have both indoor and outdoor baths. The lower level of the property contains an infrared Sauna and a purpose-built yoga studio/gym, lined with mirrors that reflect the surrounding native bush. A stunning 20m heated, saltwater swimming pool extends out from the Yoga studio, together with an outdoor shower and cedar Hot tub, to take in the sunsets. At the rear of the property is a modern take on the classic kiwi barn, named after the local morepork, a frequent visitor. The barn has a 42 solar-panel array that powers the property and the sewage and grey water is recycled for irrigation. Rain water is collected off the roofs into 6 x 25,000
litre tanks, filtered and UV treated. All appliances are low-energy and low water-use rated, low energy LED lighting features throughout the buildings. The property incorporates work from local designers and artisans, many whom are personal friends of the Moores. Artwork from friends Dick Frizzell, Rob Tucker, Margaret Estall, Dan Max and Jane Puckey adorn the walls. All the ceramics are made from Vicki Fanning from Frolic Ceramics and produce is sourced locally from Te Arai Organics and Matakana Markets to supplement produce grown on the estate. The Lodge even has sustainable Allbird Sugar Zeffers jandals and Organic Linen Robes, designed by Moni Jansen from Monni Label in Matakana, for guests to use.
Like the Blue Zones, regions around the world where people live the longest, Te Arai Lodge is built around community, sustainability, daily exercises, fresh organic local produce and great wines from Vince's impressive cellar! "Inspired Sustainable Luxury” aptly describes this very unique offering which is already receiving rave reviews from guests around the world and throughout New Zealand. members all over the country and our main thing at the moment is to try and get more grandparents on board.” The relationship is very much two-way so that the elders involved benefit as well as the younger families. “Our grandparents get a sense of joy and purpose and it helps with socialisation and loneliness if that’s an issue for them. It’s a win-win for everyone,” she says. Jo cites a recent example of a woman from Wellington who got in touch. “Her children and grandchildren live overseas, so she rarely sees them. She has so much love to give and wants to be that sort of help and support for a family.”
When Jo Hayes moved from the UK with two young children to her new home in NZ, she felt very isolated. With her parents still living in the UK, Jo really missed that day-to-day relationship. Then she got involved with Surrogate Grandparents. “I needed somebody just to be there for us. We have been so lucky to find Granny Susan who is like a New Zealand mum to me. I’m friends with her daughter and her grandchildren are friends with my children. It’s very precious and has made my life so much better.” Granny Susan is teaching Jo to knit, something her own mother wasn’t able to do. Jo’s parents
have met Granny Susan and there’s a sense of relief for them because Jo has someone like that, who can support her in New Zealand. “It’s also great for the kids because they get taught things they might not otherwise learn from their parents – they get exposed to other cultures and stories,” Jo says. As a UK ex-pat, in New Zealand, Jo knows that there are lots of people like her who get separated from their families and support networks and they find it a massive relief to have someone there who can help out and build those special relationships. Jo explains, “‘Surrogate Grandparents’ has
The programme is very secure. Everyone involved is police checked and they have to provide two references. Jo says, “We are actively interested in members from the Rodney area so we welcome all enquiries. It’s free for grandparents to join and there is a small application fee (as little as $39) for families.” There is no age restriction so willing ‘aunts’ and ‘uncles’ are also welcome. It’s about making yourself available to be a support person for others and experiencing the joys of that new relationship.

BIN AWAY, BACK AGAIN NOW WORDS
LUKE

Via the grapevine, Matt Adams and Jo Blincow heard that Bin Inn’s Warkworth branch was closing down, so they checked it out and are now the proud new owners. Matt and Jo already own the Bin Inn at Papamoa and it has been a big success. “I laughed when the Tauranga business broker said she would take us to the Papamoa Bin Inn. My view of Bin Inn was of it being old and crusty and not very attractive. But we put in new stock and new ideas and it has gone gangbusters,” Matt tells me. “Bin Inn is coming back into fashion,” Matt says. “The original concept was to remove the cost of the packaging so you saved money. Now it’s more about sustainability and reducing waste. You buy only what you need, so there’s a financial and environmental saving.” Those who were already loyal to Bin Inn will be pleased to know they can get everything previously available, as well as lots of new products. “There will be a much bigger glutenfree and organic range, kombucha on tap, a large home-brew section and a much broader range of bulk supplies such as flours, oils, grains, seeds and so on,” says Matt. The back section of the store which will be an Ecostore refillery. “We will sell their entire range in bulk. People can bring their existing container
in and refill with any Ecostore product.” There is a free-flowing exchange of information between staff and customers. “We like to employ people with a real interest in nutrition and food. Everything from complete foodies who just love food and cooking, no matter what it is, through to vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free people who really understand the needs of those, and other, diets. Our staff has a variety of strengths so we always have someone to call on for help in particular areas. We also learn a huge amount from talking to our customers.”
A slightly exhausted Matt says, “We are hoping to open in the second week of February, if all goes according to plan. Shop hours will be 9am–5.30pm, Monday to Friday and 9am–4pm on Saturday. We will be closed on Sunday at this stage, but we’ll gauge the interest for Sunday openings.” If you haven’t ‘bin’ before, make sure you check them out in February.

LESS IS MORE
With summer finally landing, The Vintry is all about spending time with family and friends over good food and great drinks. However not everyone is after an alcoholic beverage and there is often a lacking in alcohol free options! The Vintry and MMK have noticed there is typically a less than enthusiastic response to catering for non-drinkers (the usual 'fizzy's'), and rather than adopt a similar attitude have looked to provide something different that provides a classy, fresh and refreshing alternative for our customers. The Vintry supports alcohol free spirits, Seedlip

from the UK and Ecology from NZ respectively. These are game changers for those who still want the option of a delicious, refreshing summer drink or cocktail – minus the alcohol. Created using a similar distilling process to gin, these ‘spirits’ have quickly become a summer favourite with a wide range of drinkers because of the flavour combinations they offer. Small-batch distilled with traditional gin botanicals and aromatic spice blends, Ecology offer two variants: London Dry or Asian Spice, while Seedlip provide a citrus, aromatic or herbal option. All are 0% alcohol and each variation offers a new and unique opportunity to enjoy
‘drinks’ whilst staying completely in control of your senses. What better way to keep enjoying more? As Seedlip says, “The days of lime and soda are over, sugary carbonated or fruit juice based drinks just won’t do.” Head on down to The Vintry or MMK and have a try and stay up-to-date with all the different cocktails and tasting nights coming up by following them on Facebook.

ART
BENEATH THE SURFACE WORDS
For someone with a Master’s Degree from Elam School of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Design and Visual Art as well as a Certificate in Interior Design, Sophie Foote is astoundingly humble and unpretentious. “I came to art by accident really and fairly late. I grew up in an art-free zone. My parents lived practical lives, as did their parents before them,” Sophie says. After spending her twenties and thirties bringing up eight children (two girls and six boys) it was time to find a passion outside of the home. “I initially signed up to a design course to learn how to make my own furniture. One of my tutors suggested I had an artistic sensibility and encouraged me to explore contemporary art.” Contemporary art concerns itself with all sorts of current ideas, from science and politics to literature and technology. Sophie creates digital artworks, based on close-ups of everyday treasures mixed with surrealistic elements. She uses computer programs like Photoshop and PhotoImpact to incorporate multiple photographs like layers of paint, applied intuitively for colour and texture. The work is printed on large-format matt paper with highly saturated colours.
REBECKA
KEELING
“As a child, I was given a good camera by my grandfather. I always took close-ups of flowers and insects. They fascinated me, like finding treasure. I still have that experience. In my digital artwork, I’m translating the jewel-like quality of the insects to their environments and creating visual narratives.”
After her graduation in 2015 Sophie and husband Ian, renowned Head Potter at Morris & James, went on their first OE together, travelling around Europe to explore the classic works of art. “This was something we had dreamed of doing together for a very long time and were free to do, once our children had left home. It was mind-altering!”
In Sophie’s final year of art school, her programme leader, Peter Robinson suggested she read Mimicry and Legendary Psychasthenia by Roger Caillois, which proved a revelation. ”For me, reading that essay initiated a union between making and critical thinking. Which is highly ironic since the central idea of the essay is ‘insects that mimic their environments are manifesting a universal pathology like that of the schizophrenic who suffers alienation from his physical senses’.
Sophie’s artistic interests are broad. She’s longing to make jewellery again and she also wants to make personalised artworks based on close-ups of each client’s own special treasures. This year, Sophie plans to undertake a project which wrangles all the techniques, materials and objects she’s gathered over the years, into an allencompassing feast for the senses. “I will make a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ or ‘total work of art’, which addresses the emotions and intellect through all of the senses,” Sophie says. “An answer to my desire to make art that you can operate and hold in your hands. Art that serves.”
“It just so happens that my birth-father was a diagnosed schizophrenic and suffered similarly. Suddenly my graduating project took on a poignancy I hadn’t anticipated. My studio focus of a marriage of hand-craft and digital photographic post-processing took on the power of metaphor as I experienced empathy for the man I’d hardly known,” Sophie says.

Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) is a national programme of experiential learning about marine conservation. EMR has planned community, guided snorkel and kayak days around Northland and Auckland. They provide free snorkel equipment and experienced guides to lead your discovery. Their first Conservation Week Snorkel Days was run over a weekend in September last year - they were able to showcase Te Hauturu O Toi, Little Barrier Island, to 24 participants over two days. Leaving from Sandspit wharf it was a one hour-trip to Little Barrier Island. Everyone was able to hide away from the wind on both days on the North Western corner of the island. Once the boat pulled up into a sheltered bay they were able to start safety briefings and get everyone kitted up in

wetsuits, masks and snorkels. As the water was a nippy 15-17°C, participants were lucky to be able to put on two 3mm suits. Fortuitously, Gulf Eco Adventures had a hot shower for everyone to warm up between snorkels! Event organiser Lorna Doogan says, "We wanted to run this event to Te Hauturu O Toi to show the general public the impact that fishing is having on the Hauraki Gulf. You travel an hour by boat and are greeted by a beautiful island with amazing protection on land but zero protection underwater. The contrast between the paradise above and the desert below is stark. These events are the first of 18 planned within Tīkapa Moana this summer. We will be showcasing all of the Hauraki Gulf through these events - both the pristine areas protected by marine reserves and those which are not.” During EMR’s snorkels, they saw extensive kina barrens – where the sea urchin population had exploded and eaten all of the seaweed. Resident red moki were still able to be seen, as well as spotties, grey drummer and big eyes hiding in the gaps between the boulders. On Sunday the group was treated to a pod of four bottlenose dolphins who played around the boat and swam past while they were snorkeling. “This day wouldn't have been possible without sponsorship from Gulf Eco Adventures and The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation,” Doogan says. Anticipate upcoming local, snorkel days in Mokohinau Islands Saturday 2 March and Goat Island Saturday 16 March. These will be live on the website one month prior, alternatively contact Lorna via email. EMR is always looking for volunteer support on these snorkel days, so if you want to register as a volunteer check out their website, likewise if you’d like to support their training of new volunteers, donations are welcome to fund this.
