HORSEBACK PARADISE WORDS
Set in a stunning unpopulated landscape that stretches for miles, Pakiri Beach Horse Rides welcomes everyone from beginners to experienced riders. Owner Sharley Haddon says it’s a privilege to share two of her favourite things – horses and the beach – with visitors from all over the world. “The coast here has such scenic beauty and what more beautiful way to experience it than on horseback?” she says. The rides have received numerous tourism awards, and range from one-hour lessons to treks that can go over several days.

The five-day Warrior Trail goes along the beach, through native forest and over coastal high country, following ancient trails taken by Haddon’s Māori warrior ancestors, finishing up with a night at Te Kiri Marae of iwi Ngatiwai and Ngati Manuhiri, or at the Leigh Sawmill. Sharley also runs a café, two self-contained beach cabins for accommodation and manages numerous special events. “I work every weekend and take no holidays over the summer,” says Sharley. “But I am so lucky to have wonderful people working for me, some from all over the world, and some extremely lovely locals
too. Some overseas guides come back every year.” Growing up in Wharepapa South, Sharley has been on horses all her life. “My father was sheep farming from horseback. When I was only 18 months old, he would put me in the saddle of his old draft horse, Mick,” says Sharley. “I got my first pony Silver when I was five. She was very naughty, but I loved her.” Sharley met her late husband Laly Haddon and moved to Pakiri in her mid-twenties, into the home where she still lives today. A former Māori All Black and popular Councillor, Laly was passionate

about conservation. He was a founding member of Leigh Marine Reserve - which was the first Marine Reserve in New Zealand - and served on the Auckland Conservation Board for years.
In 2009, Laly received the Queen's Service Medal for his services to conservation.
As Ngāti Wai Trust Board Chairman, Laly was instrumental in forming relationships between the Department of Conservation and local tangata whenua over the management of Little Barrier Island, and assisted with trapping predators to save threatened birds in Pakiri and ensuring that department staff had access to Māori land to protect nesting birds.
The idea of offering horse-rides came about in the early eighties, when Sharley and Laly’s children were young and recession hit the farming community. They decided to diversify.
“He was a wonderful man and also a good horseman,” says Sharley. “I miss him very much.”
“We had no capital, but our children, Olivia and Ben, had two small ponies,” she says. “So I started out taking rides for $7 an hour. The income from that bought the next two ponies, and I put the
price up a bit – I remember the day I charged $10 it seemed a huge step! And that made it possible to buy another two, and it took off from there.” Sharley currently has 67 horses and ponies, including the Arabian horses she breeds. “We have horses of all sizes, types, colours and personalities,” says Sharley, “so there is something for everyone.”

Motocross is short, sharp, hard out racing, according to 16-year-old, Jack Rodgers. “Dicing with the Devil, I call it. Give it death and see if you fall off,” he says with a laugh. So, does he fall off a lot, I ask? “I’m pretty lucky because I haven’t broken much. I’ve cracked my pelvis but nothing else.”
with three races each day for four days. “It’s pretty full on,” says Jack, which is why he is already in training for the event. Besides his job as a fencer, physical work itself, Jack’s doing a lot of running, biking and rowing. “I have to stay strong for the racing and the tumbles. It’s hard on the body.”
Having only started riding motorcycles around four years ago, Jack has quickly become proficient and has been crowned Northland champion in the 14-16 years old, 250cc division, three years in a row. Quite an achievement for a young rider. He’s currently sitting in first place in the Junior 250 and second in MX2 North Island series.
When asked what part of the racing he finds hardest and he replies, without hesitation, “The mental side. I have to work on mental toughness. I’m researching more about that and watching videos about it. I need to psych myself up for a race and concentrate from start to finish.”
Jack’s next target is his first visit to the New Zealand Championship in early 2020 where he will race against the best in the country. “I’ll be competing against a full gate of 30 other riders. It’s pretty tough because we’re all within a couple of seconds of each other. I just have to get to the front and go hard out!” It’s a physically and mentally demanding schedule
Success at the New Zealand Championship would mean a trip to Australia to compete for the Kiwi team, something that excites Jack. “I’d love to compete overseas and, long term, I would love to go to America to race. They have an indoor circuit called Supercross which I’d like to do.” Look up Supercross on Youtube and you’ll get an idea of the madness Jack is hoping to sign up to. It’s controlled mayhem!
At only 16 years old, Jack relies on solid support from his parents, Tony and Krista. “The old man always comes with me. He wanted to be a motocross racer but never had the chance so I’m really lucky because he gave me the opportunity to do it.” Jack is also very grateful to his local sponsor, Rodney Honda. “Brendan’s great and he helps me out heaps and heaps. He helps with the bikes because they’re really expensive.” The dream for Jack is to one day get paid to race and compete against the best. That would probably mean a shift to bigger bikes, more power, more money, more everything! However, if current form is anything to go by, Jack is well on his way to making that dream come true. You can follow his progress at the New Zealand Championship by checking out the MX Timing website around February/March 2020. www.mxt.co.nz www.rodneyhonda.co.nz

LOCAL COASTAL GEMS
As a marine scientist and educator Lydia Green of Saltwater Eco has worked in her share of beautiful ocean environments, from the Maldives to Fiji, yet she is always drawn back to our exceptional stretch of Aotearoa’s coastline.
With two world class marine reserves, a scientifically significant harbour and an abundance of white sand surf beaches there really is something special about the Matakana Coast. She shares her top picks with us.
Pakiri Beach is 9km of pristine white sandy beach and natural beauty. This open coast beach is popular with surfers of all abilities and beach goers alike. For younger and less confident swimmers the inlet is a calm place to play and take a dip.
Goat Island Marine Reserve is New Zealand’s oldest marine reserve and played a key role in starting the marine protection movement worldwide. The reserve is still home to an active scientific community and its protected waters offer some of the best snorkelling and diving in the country. It’s a perfect spot for a kayak and swim. Younger marine enthusiasts can explore the rock pools.

Omaha Beach is another white sand stunner. This easily accessible and family friendly destination is the most protected of the regions surf beaches and perfect for learning to surf. A favourite for body boarding, swimming and beach fun. The estuary is also a perfect paddle boarding spot for beginners.
Tawharanui Regional Park hosts the second of the Matakana region’s beautiful marine reserves and a popular surf beach. Tawharanui is the only example of a mainland pest free sanctuary and a marine reserve combined; providing continuous protection to native species both on land and in the ocean. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful! Spend the whole day snorkelling, swimming and exploring the rock pools. You may even get a visit from the dolphins!
Whangateau Harbour is undoubtedly the regions best kept secret. The harbour has been described as one of the highest quality estuaries in the Auckland Region. Its amazingly clear waters are testament to healthy shellfish populations, allowing snorkellers to experience the unique marine life associated with tidal estuaries and mature mangrove forests. Perfect for a gentle paddleboard when the time is right!
Throughout the holidays, Saltwater Eco run daily surf lessons at Omaha Beach and snorkel lessons/guided tours at Goat Island Marine Reserve. Surf lessons at Pakiri and snorkel lessons at Tawharanui and the Whangateau mangroves are run on request. Three-day kids’ surf and snorkel programs are run weekly, on select dates. SURFING THE COVE ‘The Cove’, as it is affectionately known, has the best of all things needed for the perfect getaway and all on your doorstep. Plus the gorgeous Langs Beach is just over the hill! The Cove has a long and rich surfing history. A popular summer destination for generations due to its fun, mellow wave, which is suitable for all surfing levels. It is patrolled in summer by one of the longest running surf clubs in New Zealand and is proud to offer this incredible service along with numerous programs such as little nippers. For more experienced surfers, Waipu Cove is primarily a beach break with a right hander off the rocks at the southern end of the beach. There are several peaks stretching down the beach with left and right handers only a short walk away. The right hand point is a nice easy wave and is best on an east or big south east swell. Waipu Cove is usually sheltered from strong southerly winds. There’s lots of other fun activities to keep energetic kids entertained in the long summer days. Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove offer surf lessons for all ages and abilities, and they’re located right on the beach. They are passionate about equipping everyone with the right knowledge and gear to keep them surfing well and having a blast. There is a range of exciting events happening including women’s surf and yoga days, adults progression sessions, after school programs and two Bali surf and yoga retreats.

THE STYLE OF SUMMER PHOTO
Black Swamp Road is long and unsealed, becoming a dust barrel over the summer months. Being parallel to the east coast it becomes busy when the sun is out or the surf is up. Pine trees line the roadside that lead you to the ocean. Rhea has grown up in Mangawhai and will forever call it home. She wanted her own creative outlet and being inspired by the place and people closest to her - Blackswamp Surf Co. was born. “There is something very special and unique about home. I love that life is simple and growing up we have all stood alongside each other. I think my logo represents this well. I’m very lucky to have great friends that have been a massive help when it

comes to design, photography and getting things done in general. It all takes time and a lot of love.” The label first emerged just over two years ago at the lead up to Christmas. “I wanted to give gifts that I had created and were personal.” After a few hours of drawing up logo concepts she had it, a simple line drawing of a wave rolling into three pine trees.” I had it made into vinyl transfers that I could heat press onto t-shirts.” She then made a few for neighbours, which extended to friends and family. Once she started having a few requests from people she didn’t know she decided to make a go of it and try a stall at a local market last summer. Going better than expected, Rhea had to
look at having her t-shirts locally screen printed to keep up with the demand. She is back at the Mangawhai Tavern markets this summer and will also be stocking local surf shop Bammas. “I’m really excited for what’s ahead and the new summer range featuring local inspired artwork by Blake Gordon.” Rhea is also working on new ideas for surfboard accessories, which she hopes to have available this year.

PROTECTING YOUR POOCH IN SUMMER
Mr Soft Top is well known for their warm cosy merino tees and woollen coats, so why a tee in the summer? Other than their obvious adorability these fashions come with functionality, as the team at Mr Soft Top discovered over several years of working with these fun and colourful garments. Their Lycra ‘Sun Tees’ have several benefits to keep your precious pup protected this summer and have them standing out from the crowd! For dogs suffering from allergies caused by dry grass or even summer heat rashes, then covering up in a cool tee will help protect the skin from their scratching. “This is one of the most common reasons customers buy these tops, as the natural cooling effect of the Lycra seems to reduce the need to scratch, says owner Rachael staples.
“The Skin Vet in Mount Wellington recommends Mr Soft Top for covering up and protecting allergy prone skin.
swimsuit Lycra. Being New Zealand made means that custom orders can be catered to for happy, cool, scratch-free dog this summer.
We sometimes forget that dogs can get sunburnt too, especially those that are regularly groomed just in time for summer’s heatwave. Their normal protective coat is cut short and their skin underneath is exposed. Many breeds are also susceptible to overheating so that’s where these Sun Tees come into play. Soak the tee in cold water and put it on your dog, or wet your dog while they are wearing it - they can even swim in them too! The Lycra holds the water and helps to lower the body temperature.
Pop into their shop, open Saturdays, 9am – 1pm, for an instant fix or view their range online.

MORRIS & JAMES - COMING HOME WORDS

KEELING
Right here, 25 years ago, The Café at Morris & James served its first coffee. Since then, there have been a few different chapters, but from early December the café is back in the family. “We only took over the lease a week ago, so it’s still early days and very much evolving,” says owner Anthony Morris. The Café will have something for everyone, offering really good coffee, a bite to eat and a spot to relax and read the paper. People can shop, browse the artworks of Anthony Morris, or play in the lovely leafy playground “We will start with simple and beautiful cabinet food, like paninis and salads. We plan to start serving cooked food as well later on,” Anthony says. The Café seating will mainly be outside in the courtyards, and what used to be the restaurant is being turned into a combination of a gallery and shop, where pieces by Anthony Morris Studio will be displayed and for sale. Anthony’s daughter Roz Morris James is running successful café and coffee roastery Cafe Mokxa in Lyon, France’s second biggest city. Together with her French husband, she is training baristas and selling coffee throughout the country. She is also in charge of The Café at Morris & James. “Roz is managing it from afar with the help of her loyal local staff-members. She will be coming home to Matakana later in the summer to see how things are going,” Anthony says. “My son Jake has recently returned to Matakana after many years in London, and he is also getting more and more involved in promoting the Café and the family collection.” The leafy green courtyard has had a discreet tidying up, and next is the playground, which will be getting some new swings and become easier for kids of all ages to get around. The Café also encourages their guests to buy a picnic (soon to be on offer) and have a sit down in the paddocks to enjoy it. “We will be evolving and expanding slowly,” says Anthony. “People seem pleased to see the Café back in the family again, and that it has this new feel that is shiny, bright and happy!”

MATAKANA BUSINESSES COLLABORATE AND WIN GOLD!
The New Zealand Ice cream awards have recently been announced and Charlie’s Gelato have struck Gold again. This is the second year running that Charlie’s have won a gold medal. The special thing about this year’s award, is that they have teamed up with another great local Matakana business, Daily Organics. The Kombucha Sorbetto has been a true collaboration. Andrew’s wife Tania has been hooked on Kombucha for a long time. After moving to Matakana she quickly discovered her absolute favourite, Daily Organics. They started stocking the Daily Organics range in their small wholefoods area, and their 15 year old son Johnny suggested they try to make a sorbetto using the Kombucha. Delwyn at Daily Organics brought into the idea, and had the patience to supply them while they made numerous samples. Andrew admits it took a long time to get the balance right. “We wanted to limit the sweetness of the Sorbetto enough so that the true Kombucha flavour was the hero, we added some of our own home grown lemon juice and zest and kept it simple. Last year we did a similar co-lab with Honest Chocolat which worked well - it’s good fun working with other local companies. Delwyn and her team have been amazing to work with so it’s their award as much as ours.” Andrew at Charlie’s Gelato entered five flavours into the national awards this year, with three of them picking up medals. They are especially proud of the Gold medal, as they are highly sought after and very difficult to attain. The Gold winner was their Kombucha Sorbetto, with their Strawberry Gelato and Mango Sorbetto achieving Silver awards. To achieve an award you need to score 90%+ for a Silver and 95% or above for a Gold medal. The annual awards are blind tested by six independent judges, and from over 300 entries, the top score was 98 out of 100. Charlie’s Kombucha Sorbetto scored 97!
We asked Andrew what 2020 will bring? Can Charlie’s Gelato do a Canterbury Crusaders and pull off three in a row? “Not sure about that, but I am playing around with some local Pilsner and Gin, so who knows, maybe we can make the judges truly happy!” www.charliesgelato.co.nz www.dailyorganics.com

PROPERTY SHOWCASE
PEACEFUL RURAL LIFESTYLE LOT
Secluded Goatley Road just out of Warkworth, was first settled by Europeans around 1860. The road was named after widower James Henry Goatley from Oxfordshire - England, who handbuilt his homestead from pit-sawn totara milled from bush above where he and his New Zealand wife lived. He planted extensive orchards there after tasting grapes, peaches, apples and pears after a stopover in Naples. His orchards and orange grove prospered with the help of his new and noted orchardist wife, and were described at the time as a “sight to behold”. James also had a passion for cricket, and he was well known for entertaining visiting Auckland teams, and reenacting famous games. Late in the 1970s, new owners would farm the land as an angora goat farm, and it was here, near the start of his art career, that international artist Julian Dashper painted from an art studio he built on the property. Local potter, the late Madeleine Dashper, also had her pottery studio near the gate. Many locals will fondly remember her famous open days every year. ADVERTORIAL 30

DASHPER
DRIVE,
WARKWORTH
The new ‘Dashper Drive’ subdivision of the entire property aims to incorporate many of these features into the design. Lots surrounded by trees are on the market here for the first time in 130 years. The old Goatley homestead and a large protected native bush area remains owned by the family as Lot 1. Lots 3 and 4 have already been sold, and Lot 5 has been released onto the market for someone who shares the vision of a peaceful rural lifestyle. Lot 5 is a mixture of pasture and lush native bush, bordering on over 40 hectares (100 acres) of the subdivision’s native trees from Lot 1. The site features access to its own small private waterfall flowing down into a stream fed from the hills, and a path up to a beautiful secluded bush clearing perfect for a gazebo retreat or a hot tub hideaway. All power and communications are ready to go, in this most elevated building site in the subdivision. Geotec reports and topographical plans are ready for your architect. A breath-taking view down the valley to the south is there to admire when you build your own home on the 1000m2 building
platform, or when you escape into a secluded bush sanctuary at the top of the section nestled in the trees. Lot 1 with the restored Goatley homestead, is directly below Lot 5. The neighbours lower down on Lot 4 have started building their ‘New Old Barn’, which is constructed around a dismantled and restored nine metre high Eastern hemlock frame, originally built in the 1860s on a farm in Ontario, Canada. Their modern New Zealand home will use contemporary materials to contrast with the heritage barn structure. Part of the vision of the future for this subdivision is to resurrect the communal orchards for Dashper Drive residents, to host cricket games nowand-again, and to celebrate the beautiful bush surroundings. More information is available on the Dashper Drive website.

PRIME POSITION IN PAKIRI WORDS
Situated at the top of a hill with a 180 degrees outlook, this modern take on a barn makes the most of its views over the sea to Little Barrier. It also allows for stunning sights back over native bush. The house sits at the highest point, with the rolling hills of Pakiri around it. The platform has been embraced by spreading the house along the site, opening it up to be both drenched in sun, as well as a prime seat to watch the wild weather roll in from the ocean. “Given the size of the site, each space within has been graced with both views, sun, and connection to nature,” says architect Nicholas Mann. The home took the standard gable pitched roof, and rectangular shaped barn, and splayed it out along the site with a series of smaller forms that retain the overall simplistic form. This allowed

each space to make the most of the preferred views with a single depth design. “The client wanted a home, not a bach,” says Nicholas. “They live a busy life in Auckland and this house was to be a retreat to escape to, in a beautiful part of the country.” The large amount of glazing on the Northern side and limited glazing on East, West and Southern faces helps with the solar gains on the concrete mass. The single depth spaces allow for cross ventilation for cooling. “We used a material palette of dark stained timber, dark profiled metal and a lighter polished concrete floor,” says Nicholas. “The materials were selected so they can either weather naturally or be maintained, depending on preference and desired look.”
The house itself is made from a simple form, which has been separated, cut and rotated to create a chain of mini blocks that reduce the bulk of the house and create some complexity. “A modern interpretation of the barn-like structure, which had been asked for in the brief,” Nicholas says. The staircase is another standout feature. It slices through the ridge of the roofline, which both breaks up the gable forms as well as providing a stunning vista out to the sea through the full height glass. Once the sun is down, it creates a warm glow through the glazing. “This means it looks fantastic at night as well,” says Nicholas. His first visit to the site, however, was not as impressive.
“I met the client in Auckland and then headed out to site myself,” he says. “I had been told to make sure I take in the breath-taking view. But once I arrived, the fog had rolled in and I could hardly see the camera in front of me – which I was holding up to photograph the scenery!” Fortunately, Nicholas came back up a few weeks later on a cloudless day, and he has thoroughly enjoyed his many visits to the local area since then. “This is a beautiful part of the country. The site visits were always a pleasure and I kept extending my stays, heading down to the beach or to the Matakana Village Pub,” he says. “The weather was enjoyable, whether the sun was beaming down or wet weather rolling into the coast from out at sea. This is definitely an area I plan to visit more often, now that I know what it holds.”

ART
MARGARET ESTALL WORDS
Margaret Estall is a full-time artist living in Te Arai Point. Well, nearly full-time: she phones in for her Junction interview from the Environment Court in Auckland, where Te Arai residents are objecting to the proposed quarry expansion. She is outraged. “If it goes ahead it could mean over 300 trucks past our gate a day! We moved here for the peace and quiet and the incredible environment. It’s appalling, but sadly it’s just another thing that puts my work into perspective for me.” Margaret draws flowers – garlands in particular. Her art is very large-scale and she uses charcoal on paper. She rarely uses colour, mostly shades of grey. Light cascades softly from a single source to make the velvety blackness of the shadows in other corners complete. It’s all about chiaroscuro – the treatment of light and shade. The pieces

have a quality of museum-like stillness, they’re lush but ethereal, almost ghostly. The flowers disappear in places, fading out to white like an old photograph. The intellectual process behind them is no less fascinating. It began when Margaret met and married Mark, who is Rarotongan. They spent a fair bit of time in the Pacific Islands; more later with their children. She became aware of the importance of flowers there – the garland is essential in religion, ceremonies of birth and death, even architecture. “Garlands are transformative,” she says. “You put one on and you are immediately elevated, different. They endow power of a sort.” She also began to realise that the garland had been used by colonists in the islands to depict a

perfect way of life that isn’t always there. It was an image sold to the world, patronising in a way – the classic scantily-clad ‘dusky maiden’ wreathed in flowers carried a perception of paradise, there for the taking. So where did the colour go in her own art? “Black and white adds drama. It takes away the ‘noise’ of colour,” she says. “I didn’t want to use chemicals either, and most pigments involve some kind of extraction process. And it was very much about the drawing – it’s seen as the poor cousin of painting, but that’s what I felt I needed to do.” But there’s a much bigger angle to the charcoal now. The world is burning – the Amazon, America, Australia, and charcoal allows a literally organic link to those ruined environments. Sometimes the association becomes even more direct. “I’ve used
breadfruit or mango tree charcoal from Rarotonga to draw Pacific Island flora with, and charcoal I’ve found on our land at Te Arai too, which is likely to be a kauri remnant from old forest clearing.” It brings us back to the environmental degradation from the quarry which Margaret feels is encroaching on their beloved ten-year-old garden in Te Arai. “I see my art as a device to carry the themes I’m passionate about: the beauty and fragility of our ecosystems.” And she’s ready to take that all the way to court. www.instagram.com/margaretestall_art www.margaretestall.com

PHOTOGRAPHY
Mangawhai Pottery has relocated to De Le Boer Lanem, Mangawahi and is now nestled in a beautiful bush setting. From September through to October 2018, Gary and Vanessa from Mangawhai Pottery travelled through the many beautiful towns and villages of the Loire Valley in France. The fantastic people, supreme food and wine, and museums, in particular ones dedicated to Faience ware, French Slip and French Rural Pottery acted as inspiration. “Upon returning we opened our new venture on Labour weekend,” Gary tells us “It was wonderful to fill this space with so many good people. They came with warm hearts and shared bubbles in the sunshine.” “We owe a special thank you to those who offered help with shifting the pottery! It was gladly accepted. Some offered their time and helping hands, while others two cubes of concrete! I feel incredibly humbled.” So with that thought in mind Gary heads for pastures new, with the focus altered and into the realm of team building and corporate sessions, where groups, no bigger than six members, will get a real hands on experience. In late November the crew from Mangawhai Dental headed along for their Christmas experience. “We messed around with mud throwing, made quite a few pots and smiles filled the room,” says Gary. Gary is still passionate about community based workshops, with such sessions as ‘Hands on the Wheel Workshops’, which will focus on two potters at a time. He aims to invite tutors in from time to time and he will continue his kids’ workshops. Christmas Eve this year is a celebration for Gary of 30 years working and selling pots. “I have never stood on the bridge and wondered where the river might flow. Instead I jumped in and went with it.” “On that day, at the Takapuna Markets, I came home to my family with Christmas dinner and a present for each of my boys. I had spun clay into gold!” “Clay is a catalyst for a happy heart. It is just about having fun with friends and family.” They kick off their sessions in mid January so for more information or to book in an adventure, email Gary or give him a call. 021 187 0472 mangawhaipottery@gmail.com

MASTER CRAFTSWOMAN
AMANDA EVE PHOTOS
After completing a four year degree majoring in sculpture at Elam School of Fine Arts, Amanda Powell wondered, what next? “Sculptor wanted” wasn’t being advertised in the New Zealand Herald. Luckily for her, renowned Auckland jeweller Peter Minturn decided to have one last apprentice, and it was her. She spent four years and many long hours sitting beside him in his workshop learning the craft of making bespoke jewellery. She then helped him start up the Peter Minturn Goldsmith School for the next three years, and became a teacher there. Now working as an independent jewellery designer, Amanda has come away with a wealth of knowledge and skills that not only help her create beautiful jewellery pieces, but have given her a chance to continue her love of sculpture (just on a smaller scale).
CRAIG
POWELL
She uses many of the techniques she learnt at Elam, such as wood carving, mould making and lost wax casting, to make customised contemporary gold and silver jewellery for clients. From a young age Amanda was always making things in her father's dugout and her neighbour's wood workshop. Her early love of handling tools has put her in good stead for a creative life of making things. “I don’t know how people get by without a space of their own that they can hammer, saw and create stuff - it’s a form of meditation for me.” She has been working from a small home studio under the name Amanda Eve for the past 17 years. The quiet rural lifestyle and friendly community of Kaipara Flats has given her inspiration for many of her jewellery pieces, including her latest doublesided pendants based on historic buildings in the area.
These are proving popular with locals that have lived in the area for a long time and she has made one for the Puhoi area as well by request. Her latest commission has been of an old farmhouse in the district, which has since been knocked down, for a woman who grew up there as a child. They are like the little relief sculptures that she used to study at Elam. It pivots in a frame so the wearer can choose the image they wish to view that day. “I love making things that have sentiment and symbolic meaning makes the jewellery so much more than just a sparkly piece of investment.”

Warkworth Pony Club President Sandi Webb was happy to see visitors young and old, from near and far, enjoying the action-filled day. “It was lovely to see so many past members showing up,” says Sandi. “Two older sisters even came up from the South Island – from what I understand, their parents owned the original farm where the Pony Club is now, so they were some of its original members. They brought some of their old trophies too, which everyone thought was fantastic.” There were also several old, black and white, photo albums on display which past members had brought in to share.
accomplished riders, competing in Horse of the Year and other national events. The Pony Club hold popular rallies and competitions, like the Twilight Show Jumping, throughout the season, which goes from October to April. One thing the club is missing is an all-weather arena. It means they are severely limited by the weather, which sometimes forces them to cancel events or shorten the season. “The facilities are pretty basic at the moment,” Sandi says. “Our clubroom still has a dirt floor.” But Sandi remains optimistic that there is change on the horizon.

“We are waiting to obtain the lease from the Council and until that’s confirmed, we can’t really invest in facilities. But we are hopeful of seeing this changing in the years to come. Once we’ve got that security, we can start fundraising for an all-weather and all-purpose arena for our growing number of young members.” The not-for-profit organisation also put on several overnight camps throughout the year, and an immensely popular annual weekend camp at North Gate Lodge in Ruakaka. The Pony Club mainly caters to riders who own or lease their own horse, providing riding and horse management classes and qualifications through a recognised certification system. For anyone wanting to start out and learn to ride, Sandi recommends contacting Hillcroft Equestrian or Mahurangi Riding School. 021 485 810 www.warkworthponyclub.com

TREASURING THE MATAKANA HALL WORDS
“There has been a Public Hall adjacent to the present Hall (built 1959) in the village since 1876. In February of that year ‘A meeting was held in the school room, for the purpose of taking steps to erect a Public Hall. The meeting was well attended, and a sum of over £30 was subscribed for that object at the meeting.’ The ‘Rambling Reporter’ of the Daily Southern Cross notes in the 2 March 1876 edition, that ‘…nothing tends so much to bring the people together and provide many an evening’s amusement as a building of this class.’” As recorded in the historical Matakana publication, ‘We Gathered Here’ by the late David Grant. In February 1959, the Matakana New Hall Society committee decided to start construction on a new hall, as they had raised £2250. The total estimated cost was £3000, but they felt the shortfall could be arranged. There was also a discussion as to how the old hall (which was 73 years old) could be demolished. A week later a fire took hold and the hall burned to the ground. The insurance pay-out was £3000!

It was decided to include a Plunket room and a library. Two weeks after the fire, Roke and Smith Builders and a large contingent of volunteers began work on the hall. Less than six months later, on 21 August 1959, the hall was declared open at a grand ball.

In September 2019, at the Matakana Hall Society AGM, there was a suggestion made that the committee should hold a 60th Anniversary of the Matakana Hall. A small committee formed, and the anniversary was held on 24 November 2019. A call went out for photographs and memorabilia, invitations were sent to locals who had been around at the time of the hall building, and attendees were invited to dress for the occasion.
The incoming committee for 2019-20 are also considering renovations to the toilet block, the kitchen and the stage area. Any public spirited local who has expertise to help with these improvements, would be appreciated. The Hall Committee aim for an effective liaison with a range of local groups.

Barn Park Gollum had ‘his precious’ in the form of a ring and there is no question that a stable of classic Volkswagens and Porsches would fall into the same category. This passionate New Zealand-based collector (classic Porches, VW Beetles and the VW Kombi) having his lifelong dream, to create a building that would both protect his investment and create an environment for enjoying his collection and the finer things in life, has now been fulfilled. A Customkit barn with high ceilings, sound-proofing and temperature control capabilities was the starting point. The burnished concrete floors sparkle under the reflection of the industrial-style lighting. Overall the interior look is reminiscent of the German Bauhaus design style, one where art and creativity have a direct relationship with technology and peoples’ living requirements. The black painted LVL beams and ply walls and ceilings make for a dramatic backdrop that is both rugged and refined. Clean lines and open spaces dominate the areas dedicated to the parking and work areas for the automobiles. Near one of the entrances is a luxury area pandering to human needs, including a bespoke bar area, fireplace and lounge area. Sexy, sophisticated and stylish certainly applies to the world of Porsche and this alluring Barn Park pleasure dome.

Excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) can be a curse in summer, causing anxiety and embarrassment. Botox® is a great treatment for this condition, lasting long enough (6-12 months) to cover you for summer, and this extremely effective treatment only takes about 30 minutes!
Massage can do wonders for your wellbeing at any time of the year, and as the busyness of summer approaches, we sometimes need to be reminded to take a moment or two, to slow down, chill and nurture ourselves, so we can move through life feeling balanced. Divinely Feminine can help you do just that.
Summer parties and days at the beach - sooo good, but it can be difficult to keep your skin feeling radiant. The New Zealand sun is strong all year round, particularly over summer. A few helpful tips to keep your skin (and self) happy.
A tip to minimise sweating, especially for peri/ menopausal ladies, is to avoid foods that increase sweating or raise your skin temperature: spicy food, alcohol, coffee, and large meals will also increase body temperature so consuming smaller meals, limiting alcohol, drinking lots of water and just one coffee a day will all help!
Three reasons why you should get a massage this summer.

• Stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm if you can - or make sure you are wearing a hat and clothing that gives you good coverage. • Increase antioxidant rich foods and supplements and drink plenty of water. Include a glass of water between your glass of wine or your cocktail! • Apply a good antioxidant rich sunscreen of SPF15 or higher-look for one with zinc or titanium dioxide as their main ingredient as this gives an instant physical sunblock. Reapplication is the key - if you burn quickly, reapply more often. Don’t forget feet, hands, neck and ears when applying sunscreen! • Skin care is essential at the beginning and end of your summer day -antioxidant and vitamin A rich products will help protect and heal. Christine will be back on 3 January for appointments.

TI POINT REPTILE PARK
There are some unique and interesting creatures living at the Ti Point Reptile Park. The park is located on a six hectare block on the east coast of Ti Point overlooking the Hauraki Gulf, Te Hauturu-O-Toi/Little Barrier and the Coromandel Peninsula. The setting is regenerating bush that has been nurtured for the past 55 years. The park was founded by the late Ivan Borich who started collecting various animals as a hobby. It is now the largest collection of reptiles in New Zealand, including Skinks and Geckos, Alligators, Tuatara, Iguana, Lace Monitors, many species of Tortoises, Terrapins, amphibians and Tarantula spiders.
Reptile Park
The park now has over two hundred reptiles, many of which have been bred at the park. Ivan's final construction project was his largest, a 1000sq m polyhouse to accommodate viewing all year round. This enables the park to replicate the natural temperatures and habitat. One of Ivan's many breeding successes was his Green Iguanas being the first in New Zealand to accomplish this. Now there is a spectacular group on display. The animal enclosures are situated in easy-walking distance of each other, following a beautiful nature walk through the native bush. The reptile park is both educational and entertaining, making it a fantastic destination for people of all ages, birthday parties and school groups.

MAHURANGI REGATTA WORDS
Each Auckland Anniversary weekend, a unique and extraordinary event takes place in the Mahurangi Harbour. Styled on the settlers’ regatta, it was first recorded in 1865 but is probably much older. The Mahurangi Regatta since its re-incarnation in 1977 has grown each year to become a fond family tradition, crowned by a classic-yacht visual spectacle that has become the largest such race in the Southern Hemisphere. The programme starts off on Saturday morning with events for children on the beach at Sullivans Bay. All manner of races including beach sprints, egg-and-spoon races, sack races and threelegged races provide family entertainment on the sand, while on the water rowing and small yacht racing get underway around mid-morning. The launch race that was once a feature of the morning’s events has now been replaced with a
COLE
much-admired parade of elegant classic launches. Warkworth’s beautifully restored scow, the Jane Gifford does duty as the start boat for the glamour sailing event, the classic yacht race that gets underway at noon. The yachts complete a two-lap course from the harbour, around Te Haupa — Saddle Island outside the harbour entrance and back to the start line via Scotts Landing. The number of yachts taking place has continued to grow since the first specifically classic-yacht race in 1988. Now more than 100 craft compete for the family silver, the most prestigious being the Mahurangi Cup. The aristocracy of classic New Zealand craft gather for this regatta and, with sufficient wind, provide exciting racing but always a stunning vision of clouds of white sail, and at anchor. With racing over, it’s time to move over to Scotts

Landing for the prize giving and a magnificent evening of good company and joyful dancing thanks to the West City Jazz Orchestra — the 20-piece swing-band’s favourite gig since 2005. There’s nothing to buy, no tickets needed. So leave your wallets (and your dog please) behind, bring a picnic — barbecues are provided — and enjoy an evening of camaraderie and great music until midnight. Those arriving by road should use the free paddock parking and shuttle bus, because parking nearer the landing soon becomes impossible. If you enjoy art and heritage, take the opportunity to look inside Scott Homestead. The recently commissioned painting ‘HMSS Buffalo off Spar Station Cove’ is the first pictorial depiction of the Auckland region’s first European settlement, diagonally across the harbour, when visited by the Royal Navy storeship, in 1834. Also, a head-
turning display of artwork by local children pays homage to the scows and other historic craft. The homestead will be open all day on Saturday and until noon on Sunday. Many of the yachts leave early on Sunday morning for Auckland to race in the anniversary day racing on the Waitematā Harbour, but last year the tide permitted the first ‘Up the Mahu!’ river parade to Warkworth, some folk as passengers aboard the
flagship Jane Gifford. Once the Mahurangi River is dredged, this will become an annual expedition. Auckland Council and its regional parks team, Mahurangi Action Inc. — which revived the regatta in 1977, Mahurangi Cruising Club and Teak Construction, and their combined crew of more than 70 volunteers contribute year after year to this Mahurangi idyll. www.mahurangi.org.nz
