HELP YOUR FIREFIGHTERS The Matakana Volunteer Fire Brigade responds to a wide range of emergencies in Matakana, Omaha, Point Wells, Whangateau, Big Omaha, Tawharanui Peninsula as well as the wider Mahurangi coast. Matakana fire station houses a pumping appliance that carries 2,000L of water, a tanker that carries 6,000L as well as a medical response car. “During the summer season water is a scare and valuable resource and during a fire, where every minute counts, waiting 15 to 20 minutes for back up water is dangerous for our fire fighters and can interrupt firefighting operations,” says Deputy Chief Fire Officer Jeremy Gibbons. A recent local house fire required all 25,000L of the current water tank storage at Matakana Fire Station as well as additional tanker loads totalling 18,000L that had to be transported across from Snells Beach. The Matakana Brigade is working to keep its community safe by raising $10,000 to pay for a new 25,000L tank at its station on Omaha Flats Road. LOTS GOING ON AT CHARLIES Charlies Gelato have had a big couple of months. They picked up another Gold medal at the New Zealand Icecream awards, for their Dark Chocolate gelato. This is the third year running they have won gold, so maybe this isn’t huge news! But recently Anne Dewey at the Knitting Truck moved out of the Charlies building into a very cool purpose built tiny house still sited at Charlies. Andrew and Tania, using local craftsmen have renovated the vacant space, and the result is fantastic, two separate rooms each with their own identity. The first is Charlies Pantry which stocks a range of their favourite products, from kitchen essentials like, rice, curry pastes, crackers and cheeses, to Andrew's greens if he gets out of bed to pick them, and plenty more. The second space is a private room available for hire, in their quieter times, be it a birthday party or a management team meeting, this room will not disappoint. 17 Sharp Road, Matakana | www.charliesgelato.co.nz

BOHEMIAN CIDER SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD Bohemian’s local favourite Tamarillo Amarillo Cider has won the Trophy for top Cider with Fruit at the NZ Cider Awards. A unique blend of organic cider, Tamarillo and hops, Bohemian beat out over 100 other entries to take out the Trophy. Bohemian’s other four ciders were also awarded medals at the competition. Cider makers Justin and Cynthia Oliver are stoked with the results. “We’re a small local producer so it’s great to get this recognition especially for what we think is an iconic Kiwi Cider!” www.bohemiancider.co.nz justin@bohemiancider.co.nz

Timber!

The smell of sawdust, oil and old machinery is quite a heady mix, and it’s the perfume of the Matakana Sawmill. “It’s the real deal,” laughs Jasmine Munro, manager of The Slab Shop at the sawmill. Words Luke Williamson

When a fire, in March 2017, destroyed the sawmill’s main processing shed, it was no longer able to produce dressed and finished timber. The Munro family, faced with the prospect of shutting the business completely, instead adapted to make the best of what they still had by initiating a new business model that included furniture and homeware – The Slab Shop. You can still order and purchase your slabs of macrocarpa for bench and table tops, shelving and other features in the house, but now you can add hand-crafted furniture, chopping blocks and much more besides. The timber, be it slab or more refined product like a platter, is all so tactile. There is a real pleasure in running one’s hands over the surfaces and tracing the patterns of the grain, and inhaling the mix of timber and oil smells. “We get plenty of people visiting the shop,” says Jasmine, “especially on Saturdays because they come down from the farmers’

market.” The new website and online shop have also been very successful. “I can’t believe how well the online shop is going,’says a delighted Jasmine. ‘People are buying full size slabs from the website – we’ve even had a slab go all the way to Dunedin. The freight cost is surprisingly reasonable.” The last six months have been spent moving timber, sorting, organising and trying to get the shop running just the way the family wants it to. “We’re working on increasing the variety of products we offer,” explains Jasmine, “and we’re still gearing up to produce more furniture but it’s hard finding the time!” While Matakana Sawmill is known for its macrocarpa slabs, they also supply a small selection of other timber slabs, such as pine, totara and gum. For home-handy folks, they offer small slabs and slices that have been partially tidied up but allow customers to do their own finishing, and indulge in their own projects. Jasmine tells me, “We have

people who cut slabs down the middle, flip the straight edges to the outside and fill the gap in the middle with resin. They call them river tables because they look like a river is flowing through the middle.” The Munro’s have a new project on the go and hope to have it up and running in 2021. Tentatively named The Mill at Matakana, the plan is to develop the shed at the southern end of the property into 11-12 artisan workshops. “Artists will be able to rent the studio spaces, work on their art and sell it out the door,” explains Kim Munro. “We want to make it an artists’ hub.” The Mill at Matakana promises to be an excellent addition to the Matakana arts scene but, in the meantime, if your desire is for a dinner table, bench top, shelves or gifts, The Slab Shop, on land or online, is the destination for you. www.theslabshop.co.nz www.facebook.com/theslabshop.nz

Planning Our Future It’s nearly two decades since Burnette O’Connor began her first planning consultancy on the Matakana Coast, and her passionate advocacy for the best possible urban outcomes in this area is stronger than ever. Words Kathy Hunter

Burnette’s family arrived in Warkworth from Matamata when she was 11. As a teenager, thanks to a Mahurangi College careers advisor, she embarked on a degree in planning at Massey University. Her first job as a graduate for Far North District Council confirmed planning was the right path for her. “There was something new and interesting every day – from consenting dinghy storage at Mitimiti for a barefoot principal with surfboards on the roof of his HQ Holden, to being helicoptered to a private island for a resource consent,” she says. “Planning involves consulting with creative people, problem-solvers, scientists and environmentalists. I work with local iwi, developers, landscape designers, engineers, ecologists, economists and home owners. I learn something new every day.” Burnette worked for Rodney District Council in Orewa for around four years before starting on her own with O’Connor Planning Consultants in 2001. It was a steep learning curve, but soon she was riding a wave – which crested in 2017 when she had 196 jobs on the books and lost a key member of staff. She sold to national consultancy Barker & Associates, but after a couple of years , she was itching to get back out in the field.

So late last year she launched another new company – The Planning Collective – and one year later the business is going from strength to strength, with new offices in Warkworth and Silverdale in the new year. COVID has had little effect on the business; Burnette worked every day of lockdown. In fact, it streamlined the way she and her team works. “I’ve utilised digital options for a while, but now everyone has this capability. It’s been great not driving to Auckland for short meetings.” The Planning Collective provides all aspects of resource management and planning work including consenting strategy, consultation/ mediation, expert evidence for hearings and of course, resource consents and plan changes. Burnette also works as an independent commissioner, able to hear and determine resource consent hearings, mostly in Kaipara and Whangarei. There’s a glint of pride in her eyes when she says our region is deemed ‘as challenging as Waiheke’ in terms of robust community engagement with future planning. Burnette is passionate about strong local group involvement which she believes is essential for the enormous projected growth in our region going forward.

MATAKANA LIQUOR CENTRE

Her most recent big projects are Private Plan Change 25 (99 hectares of ‘future urban’ land north of Warkworth being rezoned to business and residential) and luxury retirement village ‘The Botanic’ in Silverdale. But as a naturelover who has just walked the Kepler Track in Te Anau, she relishes the mix of council and community business she works on. “I have ongoing work on the Puhoi to Mangawhai walk and cycle trail too, which will be fantastic for locals and tourism, but it’s also about the future wellbeing of my community. I love being part of achieving those positive outcomes.” Burnette’s two children, now 15 and 20, have grown up here; she launched her first business as a solo mum with a twoyear-old and has a large, supportive group of friends and family. But pottering in her garden (and 10 hectares of native bush) with her border collie is her happy place. “For me, it’s all about natural assets,” she says. It’s clear that Burnette O’Connor’s list of assets encompass her community’s beaches, forests, rivers and wetlands – as well as her own enthusiasm, determination and tenacity. www.thepc.co.nz 021 422 346

Skateboarding Tricks to Master this Summer

THE BOX DROP OFF Once you’re comfortable riding around and lifting your front wheel up. The Box Drop Off is your next trick to learn. 1. Start on top of the box 2. Take one to three big pushes 3. With knees bent approach the end of the box 4. Lift your front trucks and wheels and ride the last portion of the box on your back wheels (manual). 5. Let the board float off the box and drop with the board back down to the landing. 6. Land knees bent and look to a feature in front of you

RAMP RIDING

After learning to ride flat concrete, ramp riding is the next step up in skating. Find a ramp you’re comfortable with and get prepared for a little bit more speed than usual. 1. Start on top of the ramp 2. Put your front foot on first, then back 3. Gently edge forward 4. Bend your knees and put most of your weight on your front leg 5. Look where you plan to go 6. Lean down the ramp and continue with your knees bent

Hidden in the rural village of Waitoki is a small, family-owned distillery where passion for great tasting spirits, experimentation and good conversation lies. Washhouse GIN is small-batch distilled in our handmade copper still, bringing together a blend of NZ native botanicals with fresh grapefruit & orange.

It’s citrus forward, fresh – and best enjoyed with the neighbours.

THE OLLIE Ollieing allows you to jump over and up things, while also teaching you the basics of every trick in skating. 1. Find a piece of concrete, grass or carpet to learn on 2. Jump on your board with knees bent 3. Put your back foot on the tail portion of your skateboard 4. Put your front foot somewhere between the middle or just under the four bolts neat the nose of your board 5. Push down hard on the tail of your board, by letting the pressure off your front foot 6. At the same time slide your front foot up the board towards the nose and create a hopping motion to jump 7. Let the board level out underneath your feet 8. Land with both feet on the bolts with bent knees

Raph's Skate Lessons offer an exciting opportunity for children and adults alike to build a skate community in the upper Rodney region. Raph, an accomplished competitive skater from down south is taking the leading hand and has opened the door to help beginners up to advanced skaters progress, enter the sport and build on their competitive abilities. After the 6-week holiday program, Raph's Skate Lessons will start eight week seasons every Saturday morning with private and group lessons available for the after work and school crowds. Contact Raph for more information. Raphaelbeazley@aol.com | 021 1222 618

Pro-tip: Skateboards have a front and back, the front of your board is the half circle with the bigger end, and the tail is the half circle normally smaller. If you can’t tell, look at the graphic underneath your board and it should show you the front or back. Still can’t tell? Choose your front of your board by getting a little bit of paint or chalk and drawing a line by the bolts and letting that be your front!

LOVE AFTER LOVE

THE MORBIDS

The debut novel from the winner of the BBC Short Story Award is a love letter to family and friendship in all its forms. It has a West Indian heart, a Caribbean setting and a truly Trini voice. A lovely tale of friendship between an eccentric older woman and a young man. Full of warmth and kindness.

A story of friendship, love and what it means to truly live when, sometimes, it may seem easier not to. Beautiful, funny, and universally relatable this story of hidden loneliness and the power of compassion and companionship reminds us that life is an adventure truly worth living.

By Ingrid Persaud

HONEYBEE

By Ewa Ramsey

REMOTE SYMPATHY BECAUSE OF YOU By Dawn French

Because of you, Dawn's first novel in five years, tells the story of two very different women whose lives become entwined when they both give birth in the same hospital ward on New Year's Eve. A tale of mothers and daughters, love and loss, mistakes and regret.

By Craig Silvey The much anticipated novel ‘Honeybee’ is a heartbreaking, life-affirming novel that throws us headlong into a world of petty thefts, extortion plots, botched bank robberies, daring dog rescues and one spectacular drag show.

By Catherine Chidgey

SEARCHING FOR CHARLIE

Extraordinary and engrossing. Set in Nazi Germany, this novel takes us inside the minds of three vividlydrawn characters: Sturmbannfuhrer Dietrich Hahn, newly-appointed camp administrator at Buchenwald, his wife Frau Greta Hahn, and Dr Lenard Weber who has invented an electronic machine that aims to cure cancer.

Best selling author Tom Scott sets out to unravel the 'real' Charles (Charlie) Upham. A true Kiwi hero, Charlie was twice awarded the Victoria Cross. His courage under fire is legendary, and whilst he was of a previous generation, the story is as extraordinary and fascinating today as it was back then.

Daily Tripping down the Matakana River Imagine a 75-foot, 16 foot beam steamship negotiating its way up the Matakana River. Her name was the Kotiti and was one of the first steamships to service Matakana with the first voyage on Monday 13 June 1898. The naming of the vessel also has a link to Matakana as the Settlers Steamship Company ran a competition for the naming of the new ship. The name had to be a Maori name of no more than seven letters. Mr Thomas Wann, a Matakana farmer won the competition, submitting ‘Kotiti’ (meaning to go ahead or to move quickly). The name most appropriate as the settlers in the district were proverbial for their ‘go-aheadness’.

The crew became expert at chaining the goods onboard singling melons like a football. How times have changed with a somewhat role reversal, as Aucklanders now drive for hours to the famous Matakana Farmers’ Market.

These early sailings would be the only means of getting to Auckland taking up to around six hours; one occasion took two days as the Kotiti almost floundered on a reef and was rescued by her sister ship SS Kapanui.

Matakana Cruise and Kayak also give an insight into those early days running boat and kayak tours on the river, following the route the old ship sailed in the early days. A safe and sheltered waterway, perfect for their ‘Cruise and Kayak’ Experience.

Although around 20-30 people could travel on her, the run was mainly for the fresh

RANGI KIPA

IWI CREATIONS

AWAKEN THERAPIES

Rangi Kipa (Taranaki) is a renowned Māori sculptural artist whose creative practice is at the forefront of defining the aspirations of Māori today. Kipa came to realise that the visual language of Māori art was under the same threat as Te Reo Māori. This influenced his dedication to stimulating knowledge and encouraging the normalisation of Taonga including Moko in the contemporary lives of Māori today. Kipa's award-winning work can be found at the Taranaki airport, Te Papa and various galleries worldwide.

Leilani and granddaughter Anastasia Rickard, (Te Arawa, Tainui, Ngāti Porou, Ngati Whakaue) are passionate fashionistas and contemporary fashion designers.

Nadie Tillman (Ngāpuhi) wanted to harness the healing properties so abundantly provided by Papatūānuku and make natural products that she was happy to use on her children and whānau. This was her driving force. Using fresh picked native plants and certified organic ingredients, Awaken Therapies are simple and very effective. Made with Aroha.

Inspired by New Zealand’s culture, nature and science they have created a unique fashion label together. Leilani designed ‘Iwi Creations’ hosiery featuring original Māori tribal patterns. Anastasia discovered the beauty of microscopic imagery of native flora and fauna. This imagery is used as the inspiration of Natura Aura.

MĀORI MERMAID

Ra Gossage is a self taught painter of Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Ruanui descent. Her paintings are a reflection of her heritage, culture and environment. Gossage's interest in art began as a child when she observed her father (Peter Gossage) making kōwhaiwhai panels. She works from her home studio at Pakiri Beach, designing contemporary kōwhaiwhai and aims to promote the beauty and importance of this treasured Māori art form.

Reihana (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine me Ngai tu te Aura) is a New Zealand artist originally trained in animation for TV and film work in Aotearoa, the UK and Australia. She is also a weaver of harakeke and Kākahu, felter, interior décor artist and costume jewellery designer. Reihana's products are well known for their attention to detail, quality and design.

Jessica Thompson Carr, ‘the Māori Mermaid’, creates art that embraces and reacts to her endless journey into her māoritanga. Nestled beside the stunning “Fossick and Find”, at 41 Matakana Valley Road, Trove has everything you need to keep your cool this summer. Exclusive stockists for the region of the glorious Helga May Italian line of linen and silks, we also carry gorgeous Indian cotton clothing, sarongs, bags, hats, jewellery and more. We are proud to carry Jane Walsh’s colourful vibrant art prints and resin jewellery, as well as our very own line of Layla Rose jewellery....wonderful for gifts or to simply treat yourself. We love what we do, and helping you nail your perfect outfit, whatever the occasion is our raison d’etre. Growing your Microgreens Microgreens are perhaps underrated or at least not well known in New Zealand, and are usually not able to be readily sourced at your local supermarket. You might find Pea Tendrils and that’s about it – yes herbs, yes sprouts... no microgreens! Those in the culinary circles seem to know about microgreens and often will grow some ‘out the back’ along with some ready to pick herbs. Foodies and keen gardeners may have the odd pot of ‘micros’ growing on the kitchen sill and there are now some cool micro pods growing systems available that are becoming more popular with those wanting to invest some dollars. So how do you grow microgreens and what are the tips and tricks? Firstly, it helps to realise that like any crop, microgreens require care and attention on a regular basis. You will find that most horticultural farmers are tending their farms on a regular basis (checking every 12 hours), and with microgreens this is even more important.

is imperative. Regular garden packet seed is usually treated and not designed for shoot consumption. Any good plant store should have microgreen seed for sale, and grab a growing tray ($3 each) while you are there. Quality seed raising mix will give the best results as the right level of soil nutrients will be available for the plant and the medium will have the right water holding capacity. Regular garden soil tends to give variable results. Water and light are required along with low humidity and good air flow. Be careful not to over water as this along with high humidity will give you problems with mould and fungi.

Quality seed that is certified microgreen seed

For an easy start to your microgreen growing adventure try Pea Tendril, Sunflower or Radish as these varieties tend to be quite robust and will generally produce a crop

in 7 to 10 days. Once you get the knack of growing and are getting good results try some of the more challenging micros such as Kolhrabi, Amaranthus and Garden Cress. These varieties are sensational garnishes with vibrant colours and great flavour. Give it a go and if all else fails get to your local farmers' market as you may find one or two microgreen producers selling their fresh micros. In most cases these producers are more than happy to talk micros and give you some tips. Check out Mangawhai Tavern Market where you’ll find Big Heart Microgreens’ Mike Reid. He’s happy to chat and give some guidance for those of you that are keen to get growing. www.facebook.com/Big-HeartMicrogreens-104508834638359 bigheartmicrogreens@gmail.com

Grilled Summer Peaches The perfect summertime dessert (or breakfast!). Quick to prepare, quick to assemble, even quicker to polish off!

CRUMB 4 slices brioche bread (about 2 cups of crumbs) 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted 2 teaspoons cinnamon, to your taste, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons brown sugar

PEACHES 4 tablespoons salted butter 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 ripe, but firm peaches or nectarines, halved with the stone removed Vanilla ice cream/yoghurt for serving

To make the crumbs: Take brioche bread (store-bought is just fine), tear it into fine crumbs or pulse in your food processor. Toss the crumbs with butter, cinnamon and brown sugar, and bake in the oven until lightly toasted. Warning...you may start to find this addictive little topping appearing on everything you eat! It's also perfect on ice cream and berry desserts! Making the browned honey butter: Brown salted butter, add honey, vanilla, and a touch of cinnamon. You can make this in advance or just before you grill the peaches. Now you can grill: Simply heat your grill, BBQ or grill pan, halve your peaches, and grill both sides. Be sure to oil your grill grates for the best results. Once the peaches are off the grill, smother them in that browned butter, add vanilla ice cream (or your favourite coconut yoghurt) and cover in the cinnamon crumbs.

Peach Patch is a 15 acre family owned orchard situated at 524 Mangawhai Road, a central location to Wellsford, Te Hana and Mangawhai. They provide fresh picked, tree ripened fruit and a small variety of vegetables to their customers over the summer months from their property on Mondays through to Saturdays. Peach Patch produce is also sold at the Saturday Matakana Markets. The orchard opens for business each year from early to mid-December through until March/early April. First of the peach varieties harvested are the yellow and white flesh Spring Crest peaches and later in December Jewel plums. Throughout January, white and yellow flesh nectarines become available. Popular Luisa, Black Doris and Omega plums ripen in late January and during February. Also, sweet juicy watermelons, rockmelons, honeydew melons and table grapes become ready in time for the best beach weather. Over the entire opening period Peach Patch has for sale small selections of various seasonal vegetables such as buttercup and butternut pumpkins, Agria and Cliffs Kidney potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, apple cucumbers and beans. Check out their website www.peachpatch. co.nz. To find out their opening hours and what fruit and vegetable is available visit their Facebook page. 09 431 4901 peachpatch686@gmail.com

Pizza Perfection

Pizza making is a great way to keep the kids busy this school holidays and at the end of it all, dinner is cooked and on the table.

SALAMI 40g Italian Salami Tomato Passata 60g Grated Mozzarella 1x Red Chilli (optional)

FUNGI 20g Mushrooms 80g Mozzarella Shaved Parmesan Rocket 20g Red Onion Shaved Parmesan 1x Red Chilli (optional)

METHOD

RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

Making pizza is a matter of personal preference including the amounts of ingredients you apply but here are some tips to making your pizza a success every time.

Try adding these ingredients to the Salami pizza.

Before starting your pizza creation, make sure your dough is cold and your oven is up high – the hotter the better. Preheating your oven and cooking surface ie a pizza stone or cast-iron pan for at least 30 minutes before cooking will give your crust the right colour, texture and rise. Apply your tomato passata first, spreading evenly over your base to 1cm of the edge. Spread the other ingredients evenly around the pizza, leaving the cheese for last. Precooking ingredients before placing them on the base ensures your pizza is not soggy – but is completely up to the individual. Place your pizza in the oven for 3-7 minutes, once the crust is golden brown and the mozzarella is bubbling your pizza is ready. Keep a close eye on it, as it can burn quickly in the high temperatures.

Local Snail of Approval Accolades What on earth is the ‘Snail of Approval’ you might ask? Well it’s nothing to do with slow service but everything to do with slow food! The Slow Food Movement is recognised worldwide and was established in the 1980s by Carlo Petrini and a group of activists. The initial aim was to defend regional traditions, good food, gastronomic pleasure and a slow pace of life. Since its beginnings, Slow Food has grown into a global movement involving millions of people in over 160 countries, working to ensure everyone has access to good, clean and ethically produced food. Fast forward nearly 40 years and Auckland’s Slow Food body has just awarded the first ‘Snail of Approval’ awards. On 17 November, 14 Auckland food businesses were celebrated with this inaugural

accolade by Lauraine Jacobs to celebrate their commitment to the movement. Slow Food Auckland Committee Member Anutosh Cusack says the internationally recognised Snail of Approval program promotes and celebrates locally grown and produced food that is good, clean and fair and recognises the people who make it happen. “By recognising their intent, passion and effort rather than perfection, the Snail of Approval is intended to inspire all types of food businesses to embrace Slow Food principles,” says Ms. Cusack.

Buckleton Beach Historic Haven Words Leah Botherway

Restoring the family holiday home at Buckleton Beach really was a true labour of love for Henrietta MacDonald and her daughter Emma. What was originally a basic Kiwi bach is now a beautifully renovated holiday home that pays homage to the family’s rich history in the area. The Buckleton Beach peninsula was once owned and farmed by Henrietta’s parents, John and Molly Buckleton. John and Molly eventually subdivided the farm, keeping a couple of the beachfront properties aside for their family to enjoy for generations to come. Originally built in the 1960s as a no-frills, three-bedroom holiday house, Henrietta

and Emma decided a couple of years ago that it was time for a much needed upgrade. After numerous meetings with architects and builders, it wasn’t until they met with Erik Graamans from GBL Construction that they felt that they had finally met someone that shared their vision - that vision being an unpretentious, low maintenance holiday home that has the ability to entertain guests at the drop of a hat, all whilst preserving the family history. Typical of its era, the house had minimal storage, only one power point per room and a tiny kitchen and living area. With these pain points in mind, Erik was given a brief to expand the living areas, maximise

the waterfront views and keep as much of the original house intact as possible. What was once a tiny room, the kitchen is definitely now the favourite and most utilised room in the house. Both avid cooks and entertainers, Henrietta and Emma worked with the team at Bespoke Projects to come up with their dream kitchen. This hub of the home is now a huge space opening out onto the light and airy living room and looking out across the water. All of the living spaces have been designed with entertaining in mind, from the four metre long kitchen island that doubles as a dining area and large deck

extension set up for al fresco dining, right through to the addition of their “favourite appliance”, the brand new wine fridge. Elegant touches dedicated to the family’s previous generations and the peninsula’s history can be found throughout the home including a special corner with framed historic maps and a pew that was commissioned by Henrietta’s great grandfather and made from wood salvaged from the ‘Boyd’ shipwreck in 1809. Whilst beautiful and polished with its clean lines and simple aesthetic, the house was built to be lived in and enjoyed. It is a home where guests and pets alike can relax, unwind and wander straight off the beach and into the house, sandy feet and all. Absolutely everything on the property has been considered and Henrietta has even gone as far as to make the water tank beautiful. An item that is usually an unattractive necessity has been made into a floral feature and covered with a layer of fragrant Star Jasmine. What was once a loved holiday home is now a loved permanent home for Henrietta and Emma. All it took was a beautiful restoration and a global pandemic for them to pack up their pets and move to their beachfront retreat permanently. Emma now runs her photography business, fotographicnz from the house and can be at the beach from her computer within 30 seconds; and, of course, from the wine fridge to the hammock in even less. www.danwood.co.nz www.bespokeprojects.co.nz www.gbl.net.nz

The Golden Rules of Puppy Etiquette Puppies need consistent guidance in their early years to help them mature into well mannered dogs. Sniffers Dog Trainer Frances takes us through some key training concepts you can use with your new family member. Photo Little Doves Photography

Stay Positive

Puppies (and adult dogs) learn best through positive reinforcement. Rewarding behaviour you like (such as laying on their bed, or walking nicely on the lead) is the quickest way to communicate to your pup when they're doing what you want. A training marker (such as a clicker or a word) helps tell your puppy exactly when they've got the behaviour right. A simple “Yes! or “Good! can work, but clickers have been shown to speed up the training process because of their consistent and novel sound. Effective rewards can be things like treats, physical touch or verbal praise. Use high value treats (cooked chicken is great) for hard tasks in distracting environments,

low value (such as everyday kibble or an enthusiastic 'good dog!') for things they already know to maintain the behaviour. Remain Patient

Puppies make a lot of mistakes while they're learning so it's important to remain patient. Using force such as tugging the leash or using a harsh tone can build nervousness in your dog because they can get worried about being punished. So, it's important to manage, not punish, behaviours they can't perform reliably yet. If your pup hasn't learned to come back yet, use a harness and longer lead (3-5metres) to give your puppy freedom while you safely have control so they can't run off. If they are chewing your shoes,

calmly swap them for an appropriate toy and put your shoes out of reach. Make Training Fun Dogs love to work and play – we've bred them for it! By keeping training sessions short (twofive minute sessions a couple of times a day), learning becomes a fun game for your puppy to enjoy and leaves them wanting more. Sniffers dog training offers one-on-one training and behaviour modification consultations throughout Rodney. They use simple and effective training tools to show owners how to motivate their dogs to follow their lead. 021 08322083

Rustic Retreat Tahe sits within a simple little paddock surrounded by a working farm it was once a part of. This spectacular two acre hilltop property straddles the TeAri and Mangawhai boundary.

The sheer beauty and quieter pace of the TeAri/Mangawhai hinterland, (sometimes referred to as New Zealand’s equivalent of Australia's Byron Bay) has created a destination in its own right. It is surrounded by lush farms while retaining easy access to pristine, unpopulated beaches Pacific Beach, Te Ari, Forestry and Mangawhai’s Ocean Beach. Tahe offers a real alternative option to the traditional holiday bach, in that its unique position allows access to the great surf

beaches of Te Ari and Forestry without having to navigate sometimes congested Mangawhai Village and access to the Tara Iti golfing facilities, yet is only a five minute drive if you are looking for a great coffee. Tahe is a perfect balance of warm rustic elements and high ceilings, from its oiled Macrocarpa weatherboards and oversized barn doors to its polished warm brown concrete floors and bespoke fittings and finishes, the result is an organic warmth. A peaceful and intimate,

soulful haven - just perfect for those wanting to enjoy the best of the region. Stretching out below the mezzanine level is a generous open-plan living and dining area, and a Warmington Studio wood burner is welcoming in the cooler months. By day the house is awash with natural light and by night, carefully considered lighting creates a delightful ambience. Raw timber columns are a stunning feature of the outdoor dining area with

an eight-seater artisan dining table leading to the main lawn, inviting guests to settle in and soak up the stunning sunset vista across the valley below. Just off the main living area, an oversized barn door made from reclaimed timber leads to the two downstairs bedrooms featuring queen size beds and hand crafted custom built Garboon Ply shelving. The feature bedroom is tucked behind the black shutters at the top of the stairs, completely private with rural views and Head Rock in the distance. Macrocarpa shiplap walls and rustic barn doors enclose the bathroom area creating the feeling of ‘bringing the outdoors in’. A beautifully carved stone basin perched on a raw Macrocarpa bench and steel detailed mirror add to the rustic charm. The outdoor shower is ever popular to drench yourself in either morning or late afternoon sunshine at days end. Herbs and veggies at the back door will tempt you to include in meals along with a recently planted boutique orchard that will provide produce over the seasons. The views to the coast are immediate and enhanced further once you enter the main living areas as the floor to ceiling glass windows and doors reveal the 200-degree compelling views. Protecting your Deck over Summer When looking to revive a deck, refresh your beautiful cedar cladding or other outdoor timber there are a few things you need to take into account. What timber are you dealing with? How old is it? What products (if any) have been previously used on it? All timber requires nurture (oil) to last and look its best. There are a few other variables but as a standard you should be looking at putting something on your timber straight after a deck is laid or within five to eight months. As far as the type of products out there – you can go with an oil or a stain. Both will usually have an oil component to them and aid in providing longevity to the deck. The beautiful natural look of oil penetrates

the timber, reviving and protecting it whilst allowing it to just silver off naturally. A stain on the other hand usually gives you a colour and creates a ‘film’ on top giving it longer lasting colour and wear. There are a lot of opinions out there on what is the most cost effective option for decks. Stains are supposed to last longer and oil is usually more expensive. On the other hand the maintenance cost in labour is cheaper with oil than stain as often you need to strip off the old stain before you can re-apply a new one. However a lot of products available do not last much longer than one year (despite what they say) and when they start to break down they split, crack and flake

leaving patchiness. You cannot avoid this altogether as a colour/stain will always eventually break-down, however you get what you pay for. Cheaper options are often harder to apply and just don’t last, but then when they do eventually break down you can often have an unsightly mess. TK Revive uses top end, long lasting products, and has a variety of oils and stains in a wide range of colours. They work with you on your project, whether it be a new build or revive, and care for your home as if it were their own. Find them on Facebook @TKReviveLtd, or visit their website www. tkrevive.co.nz. Alternatively give them a call to chat about the best option for your project. 027 677 0747 | kim@tkrevive.co.nz

Master of all Trades Mark Lever has packed a few diverse careers into life so far, and now he’s reinvented himself again. If you’re a fan of mellow timber and industrial steel in your homewares, you’ll enjoy his latest angle. Words Kathy Hunter

Here are a few of Mark’s previous work scenarios: after departing Tauranga in 1980, aged 17, he rapidly ditched a cleaning job in a Western Australian mining town for a chef’s apprenticeship in Perth (where he met his partner, renowned Matakana yoga teacher Susie Lever), then became sous chef in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Surrey, UK.

he travelled the world for 12 years.

Next up, a bike courier in London for photography studios, followed by working in those same studios alongside photography luminaries Clive Arrowsmith, Barry Lategan and Linda McCartney. “I met Paul!” Mark grins.

Right now, a tsunami of creative flow is generating some very cool stuff in his huge Matakana workshop. Mark strokes the grain in a blackwood platter. He has worked with timber for years, but says, “New ideas have come from using organic industrial waste products: coffee grounds, pumice, wine barrel staves.” And he’s really enjoying working with steel.

Back in New Zealand, the couple ran a ski lodge; Mark took photos on the side, then scored funding for an early ski film. Before long he was back in Auckland as a top advertising photographer, then as an award-winning commercials director,

Now Mark is creating elegant homewares, furniture and lighting, which revel in form, function, and extreme attention to detail. Any training at all? “Well... no,” he says. “But according to ancestry.com, our family has a direct line of woodworkers back to the 1600s, so maybe it’s in my DNA.”

There are cube egg-cups in wood (stack four to see the beautiful continuous grain), simple bent-steel bookends, handmade

door hardware, platters, chopping boards and a variety of sleek stools and clever cabinetry. Wooden spoons are cut from oak barrel staves and blow-torched black. Experimenting with coffee grounds and resin, he’s created textured pepper grinders, light fixtures and stool seats. Bigger-picture prototypes include a modular, Argentinianinspired fusion barbecue, Lundia-style shelving in native timbers and steel and a range of funky industrial lighting. There are even carbon steel frypans in development, with lustrous brass handles. Next on the list is a smithy, with a proper forge. Mark does his Muttley cackle. “A friend once told me, ‘bite off more than you can chew, then chew like hell’.” Check out his new website and be ready to pounce. www.workshop73.co.nz www.instagram.com/workshop73nz

Fire & Flame Samantha’s affinity with glass is one of resonance. To her it shares similarities running parallel with the presence of spirits energies – translucent subtleties of shimmering gracefulness, simultaneously emanating light with majestic elegance and whimsical playfulness. Samantha has a Bachelor in Design and Visual Arts from Unitec Auckland and in her third year of study Samantha was encouraged to enter the NZSAG Exhibition, held at the TSB Wallace Arts Trust Gallery. She was both surprised and delighted to have her Glass Sculpture ‘Avoid Crash Landings’, selected to become part of Sir James Wallace’s renowned glass collection. Samantha’s fascination with glass started when she was a child around the age of six, Sam was taken to visit Bill Bestic, a family friend in Gore Bay. Sam still has the image etched firmly in her head, as they walked into

his studio she felt her heart light up, as if it was on fire! Sam stood there and gazed in awe at a piece of Bill's work leaning against the window. It was illuminated by the natural light and it glowed...they seemed to glow together. Sam remembers wishing then that when she was old enough, she too could make pieces of such magical beauty. She was fortunate enough to intern with Te Rongo Kirkwood who's artistic, intuitive and spiritual expression she admires greatly as both mentor and friend. Vicki Fanning has also been a great inspiration to Samantha as a Visiting Industry Professional during her last year at Unitec. Vicki introduced her to flame working - the art of manipulating the glass rod with a flame working torch - a technique that Samantha presently uses when creating the majority of her work Living in Mangawhai Sam has been

inspired by the ocean and all that it holds: sea life, the water’s movement and the peace and clarity it invokes. Her piece ‘Anemone’ was again inspired by Ernst Haeckel - Artist, Biologist and Philosopher, with his majestic drawings of ocean life. An object appears to have life with fluidity, movement and light. A great passion of hers is recycling, and Sam uses safety glass and window glass from the 1900s through to the 1970s retro glass to recreate bespoke jewellery pieces, accompanied by sterling silver findings to produce one off pieces. Samantha welcomes commission pieces and can be found on Facebook @Samantha-Joy-Minnery-GlassArtist and also on the Chooice website. www.chooice.co.nz/store/uniq-glass sam_minnery@hotmail.com

Fired Earth Pakiri local, Rachel Waterhouse created ‘Pakiri Clay’ at the end of 2019, while also working full-time as a primary school teacher. Her small business was born from her passion for ceramics, and Rachel’s unique and stunning designs are a perfect combination of function and form. Lovingly created at her home studio overlooking the rolling hills behind Pakiri Beach, she draws inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding her home and is constantly looking for design ideas while exploring local beaches and forests. She particularly enjoys incorporating shapes into her pieces from leaves, flowers, birds and insects. With a degree in design, she has spent her life designing and creating clothing,

jewellery and prints and creating ceramics is a natural progression. Her mother was also a potter when she was young and has been Rachel’s inspiration as a creative maker. “The process of working with ceramics is strongly connected to the five elements of earth, water, fire, metal and wood,” she tells us. Rachel particularly enjoys working with the organic nature of clay, as it is not only sustainable, but believes there is almost a therapeutic quality to the process of manipulating the clay on the wheel. She primarily uses wheel throwing techniques with some hand building and often experiments with her glazes, even leaving parts of her work unglazed to let the naturally rustic texture of the clay shine through. All of

her ceramics have been fired in Warkworth at the Kowhai Arts and Crafts Centre. From platters and bowls to tumblers and mugs (and even beautifully ornate candlestick holders), Rachel’s pieces are works of art that can be used in every home, every day. She hopes that her ceramics will become much loved favourites within her clients' homes. You can purchase pre-made pieces or request a specially commissioned piece via her Instagram account or by email. She also sells her pieces at the Matakana Market running from 10am to 2pm on the second Saturday of each month. pakiriclay@gmail.com www.instagram.com/pakiri.clay

Nohonga Now at Brick Bay

Bioluminescence by Topsy Steele and Anna Li

The Nohonga (seat) design challenge is a new collaboration between Brick Bay and the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects Tuia Pito Ora who have challenged students and all levels of graduated landscape architects to design and construct creative nohonga to enliven public spaces. The Nohonga competition will accompany Brick Bay’s successful ‘Folly’ architectural competition which has stimulated the imaginations of architecture students and graduates since 2015 and resulted in an experimental structure being built on-site each year. With the inaugural Nohonga (seat) design challenge, the attention turns to landscape architects to make their mark on Auckland’s urban landscape and contribute to the generation of unique and exciting public spaces. With the support of sponsors Britomart and Resene, this project has been a resounding success this year but was not without its challenges (Covid-19!).

Te Whakatōhenehene ‘The Disruption’ by Bela Grimsdale, Luke Veldhuizen and Sam Gould

Entries closed in May, 2020, submissions were judged the following month, and the winning teams had three months to build their designs. Three of the finalists’ seats were constructed and installed at Britomart for the duration of November with the fourth ‘Bioluminescence’ heading straight to Brick Bay.

A Journey of Discovery, A Labour of Love Sleep is essential for both mental and physical wellbeing. But in our ‘always on’, busy modern world, we don’t always get the rest we need. Steph Wyborn, the entrepreneurial founder of Hyoumankind pillows, is on a mission to harness the power of sleep to optimise wellbeing. “My lightbulb moment came on holiday with friends around ten years ago, noticing how they looked in the morning. As we talked, patterns emerged – a friend with facial lines slept on her stomach, another with cleavage wrinkles slept on her side... I’d also noticed that I woke up looking and feeling better some days than others, and it clicked – it was all about sleeping positions! The ‘line’ between sleep and beauty was clear (excuse the pun!).” She began to study the science of sleep: how wrinkles form, postural alignment, and the impact of sleep on wellbeing. There was

lots of scientific evidence to support the power of sleep, but few solutions related to pillows. So Steph began to make her own. The key question that Steph set out to answer was, ‘what makes a good pillow’? She discovered that it is incredibly personal because everyone finds comfort in a different position. “It’s important to consider versatility of use, because of this and because sleep doesn’t always happen in bed at night. I wanted our pillows to be multi-use for side or back sleeping, and portable so that wherever you go you experience the same quality of sleep”. She engaged with sleep specialists, physios, chiropractors, plastic surgeons, beauty therapists, yoga teachers, researchers and foam manufacturers. Selecting the right materials was challenging: the pillows had to breathe, keep the head cool, feel supportive, and not change with temperature.

The result of her labour of love is Hyoumankind – ergonomic and multi-use pillows – designed and made in New Zealand from premium, slow release memory foam. Contoured to cradle the head and neck, they balance softness with support and science with thoughtful design. The full Hyoumankind range is available from Tea & Tonic in Matakana or on their website. www.hyoumankind.co.nz www.teaandtonic.co.nz

Discover a New Way of Makeup After nearly three decades as a professional makeup artist, Aleph Beauty founder Emma Peters noticed that makeup kits overloaded with confusing, unnecessary products made everyday makeup applications seem overwhelming and time-consuming. When often it took just a small selection of products or colours to come up with simple, creative ways to enhance natural beauty. Emma wanted to create a minimalist makeup collection that not only met the mark on performance but was quick and easy to use. So that anyone could achieve a flawless look without having to be a makeup artist themselves. The synergistic ‘Aleph’ makeup range is designed so that you can own less and waste less whilst having the ability to create endless possibilities. Streamlining beauty routines without sacrificing creativity, and without costing people, planet and animals – the ethos behind the brand. "Excess offerings don't make makeup fun, they make it a chore. Most makeup wearers want ease. I believe that people don't have to complicate their makeup routine to look beautiful,” she says. Forget the overwhelm of waking up early to labour over the countless products in your makeup kit. Aleph is the conscious makeup choice for women who want to

reclaim their confidence. A product range that is designed to be mixed and matched for ultimate versatility and customisation. Unlike many traditional makeup ranges, Aleph Beauty suits a wide range of skin tones without the need for hundreds of different shades. The adaptive qualities and complementary products allow you to adjust the application technique, specific to your skin tone, skin type and desired look. Take the award-winning Concealer/ Foundation, for example, formulated to provide multi-functional coverage depending on how you apply it. From a full coverage concealer, a medium coverage foundation to a light veil when mixed with Aleph Serum/Primer. It is so easy to change things up – mix a little bit of this and a bit of that to match your feel for the day. Emma lends her years of expertise to help other conscious women discover a new way of makeup. In partnership with local stockist, Nomad + Home, Emma will be hosting an in-store event where you can learn more about Aleph and some of Emma's top makeup tips and tricks. Follow @nomadandhome. nz on Instagram for upcoming details on this event, to be held in March. www.alephbeauty.com www.nomadandhome.co.nz

TIPS FOR APPLYING ALEPH CHEEK AND LIP TINTS •U sing clean fingertips, dab the colour onto the apples of your cheeks. •A great place to start is by drawing an imaginary line down from your pupil and between your nose and upper lip. Then aim the product at this spot and blend the product in an upward and outward motion. • I t is important to add the cheek colour back as you are evening out your skin tone with foundation and you want to put the colour back in the right place. • I f you do tend to naturally have a ‘high colour’ it is especially important, as you are evening out your look and it can look unnatural if you don’t put the colour back in the right place.

Maori Toi Festival 2020

Words and Photos Josie Gritten

What a performance and what a gathering of talented people! Otamatea High School was abuzz for the inaugural Toi Maori Arts Festival. Seven schools from the area, as well as the senior Ngati Whatua kapa haka group thrilled the audience with beautiful, heartfelt waiata and powerful, spine tingling haka. The performers conducted themselves with a fierce pride and their mana and strength really shone through. Ka pai whanau – can’t wait for next year!

Shipwrecked Festival 2021 From 12-14 February 2021 (Valentines weekend), an hour and a half from the sails of Auckland city, something epic is taking place. Shipwrecked’s boutique Music and Arts Festival in Te Arai is a festival with a huge heart that just keeps getting bigger. Inspired by the European festival scene, but with uniquely Kiwi vibes, the Shipwrecked site has been lovingly curated over the years to transform into a spectacular playground. A place for us to come together, for us to celebrate and immerse ourselves into a weekend of music, nature, visual and interactive art, and life itself. The land of the Shipwrecked Festival site has come a long way from its humble origins – starting out with a group of friends gathering

for an epic weekend of camping with music. Since those days it has evolved through the years, tended and passed between a golden thread of loving hands. From the original End of the Line crew with their Techno Villa and Weekends with Friends, to the incredible Off The Radar Festival with their crazy cool Germans and Swiss, before landing where it is today. A spectacular playground for those looking for something that extra bit special, with pieces of each crew remaining to remind us of where it all began and to see how far we’ve come. Each year Shipwrecked evolves into

an ever-expanding love affair – a time for reconnecting with our loved ones, accompanied by a soundtrack quite unlike any other. Shipwrecked Festival has been crafted with fun for all in mind – the best underground music, fantastical art forms, visuals and games, and, of course, the best people around. Tickets are available from their website and start at $280 for the whole weekend or $250 for Saturday and Sunday. Deposit/ payment plan tickets are available. Volunteer applications are open until 15 January. www.shipwrecked.co.nz

4 Horizon View Place, Mangawhai Heads Architectural with panoramic views One of the best sections in the desirable Mangawhai Point, and one of the last remaining undeveloped sections in Mangawhai having elevated sea views. Lot 16 was the second most valuable section in the subdivision with ownership secured not long after going to market. The views are truly breathtaking, extending 150 degrees northeast over the harbour and ocean. The dwelling has been specifically designed for the land by Chow Hill architects and features three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open plan living area with floor to ceiling northeast facing glass. To auction second quarter 2021 (unless sold prior).

Declaring a Traffic Emergency so it was fair enough as far as it went. There was a healthy degree of scepticism, however, about the value of merely stating the existence of a problem where such statements are not accompanied by much meaningful action to solve the problem.

Happy New Year! I hope that 2021 has begun really well for you all. No doubt over the Christmas-New Year period you will have been reflecting on a crazy past 12 months, as I certainly have been. Hopefully we’re in for a bit less rough a ride! Among all the significant political and real world events of last year was a declaration of a “climate change emergency” by the government. No one disputes the importance of our natural environment

While it’s right to be cynical about the value of emergency declarations made merely for the sake of appearance, therefore, I am thinking about issuing a declaration of “traffic emergency” for our area. Simply put, the situation on our roads has become intolerable. There are major implications for quality of life, where parents spend hours travelling that they could be spending raising their kids and so on. There is a huge effect on our productivity too, given how much time we spend driving that we could better spend making or doing things. And, of course, the most important implication is the danger to life and limb that

we encounter daily, just getting from A to B. For all these reasons, I intend to announce

early in 2021 that a state of emergency exists in Auckland’s west, northwest and rural

north where traffic is concerned. I will be

proposing a number of specific measures to

address this issue – bearing in mind my own injunction against vague virtue-signalling – and hoping that the central and local

government decision makers get onboard. The powers that be need to know what’s

needed (although they’ve been told many times before, it should be noted) and I’ll

keep doing my job of letting them know all

about it. Please join me in demanding better out here. After all, it’s an emergency. Chris Penk MP
