SPOTLIGHT
OOB ORGANIC
Oob Organic has proudly been a part of the Rodney district since its inception in 2001. The company was founded by Kiwi’s Robert and Shannon Auton, a husband and wife team who dreamed of leaving their careers, in finance and government respectively, to open an organic orchard to grow blueberries. A lifestyle choice many would admire when they learn that Robert and Shannon have a brood of triplets, who were at the time, in kindergarten.
and ripen as nature intended, without chemical enhancements to speed up ripening, harden the skins, or make them less susceptible to heavy rain.
The company was founded on the belief that there is a place in the market for organic products where quality, great tasting, healthy food options could be made more accessible and mainstream to everyone. By being certified organic, Oob shows their commitment to the land, the plants, the farmers and staff and to their customers. All Oob Organic packaging is 100% recyclable and by being ‘spray free’ the plants are allowed to grow
Over the years, demand has grown for organic produce and the company continued to expand by creating new organic products to bring to the market and by partnering with organic farmers like Jorge, Oob Organic’s Chilean partner and expert grower. Robert met Jorge over ten years ago and ever since they have been growing quality organic fruit. Together they follow the “For all your gardening needs same values, organic principles and certification
As the company grew, so did the Oob crew which today is made up of twenty-seven passionate organic-loving employees, from the berry pickers to ice cream experts, who all make Oob organics mission possible; a mission to make organic, great quality, incredibly delicious food more accessible.

processes and approvals, so their customers can enjoy organic produce all year round. Every year Oob Organic opens their orchard in Omaha and welcomes locals and holiday makers to the orchard to get their fresh, berry blend soft serve while they chill on the colourful beanbags, relax and enjoy their ice cream under the trees. Oob Organics produce is available at your local supermarket and they also partner with national and local businesses, like the local Sheep World’s Berries Café and Organic Ice Creamery, to share the goodness with the locals and tourists alike. PROFILE
DELICIOUS & LOCAL - LAURAINE JACOBS WORDS
CHRISTINE
SHEEHY
If you stop by the fresh produce stalls on the way to Omaha this summer, don’t be surprised if you bump into renowned food writer, Lauraine Jacobs. For the last 15 years, Lauraine has delighted in the ‘wealth of horticulture’ available on the Omaha Flats. “I marvel at the produce at this time of year. Beautiful table grapes, avocados, beans and sweetcorn.” “When we built our beach house at Omaha in 2002, there was only one stall at Quail Farm. If they only grew courgettes and potatoes, then that’s what we had for dinner every night. When you eat seasonally you realise how important it is.” Lauraine’s love for Omaha began with childhood holidays on the Tāwaharanui peninsula, sleeping on the beach at Christian Bay. “Driving home there was an amazing view of Omaha; before the causeway went in, it was a remote beach.” A lifelong foodie, Lauraine trained at the Cordon Bleu in London, returning home to teach cooking classes from her Auckland home. She began food writing in the 1980s, becoming a food editor of the newly published Cuisine magazine, then writing a popular column in The Listener for the last seven years. “I never trained in journalism, but I’m incredibly curious at heart. Whenever I hear something that’s the slightest bit different, my ears prick up.” Over her career she’s written nine food and recipe books and picked up an array of accolades: former president and board member of the prestigious International Association of Culinary Professionals (where she served alongside Julia Child), President of the New Zealand Guild of Food Writers, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the food industry…her list of achievements goes on… and on and on. Despite her international renown, Lauraine still delights in discovering artisans and innovative foodies close to home. She was involved in the early stages of the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market, with long-time friend Christine Didsbury, Trish Allen and Joe Polaischer. “People said farmers’ markets wouldn’t last five years.

Lauraine with Fleur Sullivan on recent book tour
It has been amazing to see local people start their businesses at the market and get traction.” “I’m a passionate supporter of artisan food producers and farmers, whether large or small. For me, agriculture and horticulture will always remain the backbone of this country.” Right now, Lauraine is fired up about food waste and sustainability, thanks to her latest passion project as editor of the New Zealand section of Truth Love and Clean Cutlery. It’s an international guide to restaurants striving for true sustainability in every direction. “This is the story of tomorrow. People want to
spend their money with someone who cares about the source of the food, about their staff, about the community; and of course the food must be delicious.” She’s also excited about the emergence of a new wave of Māori cuisine. “It’s the one true point of difference we have in New Zealand.” She cites the Pūhā and Pākehā food store in Grey Lynn, innovative high-end restaurant Hiakai in Wellington and the recent ‘extraordinary’ Creation pop-up dinner, by chefs Kasey and Karena Bird, which has a menu that told the story of Ranginui and Papatūānuku and featured Matakana’s Honest Chocolat.
So what’s on the menu at Omaha this summer? “My husband, Murray would be thrilled if we ate fish and salad every night,” she laughs. “I’ve simplified my cooking over the years. I’m interested in pure, fresh food, as close to the source as you can get it.” “My philosophy is, if it’s simple to make, it will be simple to eat and everyone will love it.” Lauraine’s latest cookbook, Always Delicious, is out now.

THE WARKWORTH LIONS CENTENNIAL PLAYSPACE The Warkworth Lions Centennial Playspace has been built with financial assistance from the Rodney Community Board. It features twin, flying foxes and four in-ground mini tramps. The Playspace is intended for older children and complements the Warkworth Lions junior playground adjacent to the ‘Jane Gifford’. Consultation with children at Mahurangi College, an open day with the Community Board at Lucy Moore Park, the consent process and the weather all played their part in delaying the process. Having brought some excitement to Lucy Moore Park, the Warkworth Lions Club will now work with the community Board to add more activities. www.lionsclubs.org.nz/warkworth
PLANT LOVE Corrinna started Plant Love due to her passion for indoor greenery and the lack of a diverse, quality range in the area. She believes plants enhance the look and feel of an indoor space while also providing health and wellbeing benefits. The Botanic Studio will open in February next year and soon after a 'Plant your Place' service will be available offering information, advice and plant sourcing specific to people’s homes or businesses. In the meantime Corrinna has some lovely plants and accessories available for purchase from her home. For more visit plantlove.nz on Facebook or Instagram.

Che Burnett, far left, with the team from Aotearoa Surf
“What we do out there gives an amazing amount of joy, you should see their faces...” enthuses Che Burnett, owner of Aotearoa Surf. He’d been out in the water for most of the day with three different, regular surf classes. I can hear the surf and smell the salt air as we chat. “We’re out in it in all weather, except for lightning strikes or tsunami warnings!” he chuckles. His enthusiasm is contagious. Aotearoa Surf is based in Te Arai and has been operating since 2002. Five years ago Che took over the business and has continued to grow its fantastic reputation. They provide surf, kayak and paddleboard experiences, programmes, lessons and hire; fundamentals, etiquette, rules, handy tips and in-depth advice is on tap for the avid learner. With twelve staff they have a lot of talent and ensure top, group lessons with instructor to student ratio of around 1:5. A truly kiwi mix of local and international, all instructors are qualified, experienced and first aid certified. Auckland’s East Coast offers an excellent place to learn Che said, “...it’s forgiving, easy and fun, and on the east Te Arai in particular it is very consistent, a swell magnet, delivering waves
where other beaches will be flat. That’s why it is rated the number one east coast surf beach in Auckland.”
shop is located at 11 Te Arai Point Road, but don’t expect to go bikini shopping - they are core surf! Stocking “to change your lifestyle.”
Aotearoa Surf is the sole licence holder to operate at Te Arai Regional Park, but regularly run programs and events from Orewa up to Ruakaka. Where’s best? Mangawhai and Te Arai for their consistency; pristine too of course. They generally are a safe place to be in the water, a spot out of the wind, rolling sands, clear waters, and spilling over with beauty.
A couple of hundred wetsuits, 100-odd boards, accessories and surf beach essentials; they have got the lot, in-store. Aotearoa Surf School boasts the longest operating schedule on Auckland’s East Coast too - all year round. “Any day of the year,” Che says, “we make it happen.” Discounted boards are on offer for those who’ve completed a lesson and are eager to keep getting out there. Che even shares his annual surfing holiday as a retreat now for those up for surf and sun in Canggu, on the West Coast of Bali. “We put smiles on dials, and open up a new way of life for people” Che says.
It seems almost any age, desire and ability is catered for. Women can join ‘Surf Sistas’, a Monday morning girls-only surf club, the ‘Grom Squad’ made up of the ‘micro surfers’ aged 4-6 yrs and ‘juniors’ aged 7-16 yrs. There are private or group lessons available, after-school programmes and tours and packages that can cater for weekend getaways and corporate events, even kids birthday parties and hens/stag do’s. Mid-January 2019 they’re running the Ultimate Kids Summer Surf Camp; an epic sounding fivenight, all-inclusive summer camp for ages 8-16 yrs at the fantastic Moirs Point campground. Buses will be running from Auckland. Aotearoa Surf

BEACH, BREAKS AND BBQ'S
Tucked away in a sandy bay, with a backdrop of coastal farmland, Martins Bay Holiday Park looks out onto magnificent views of the Hauraki Gulf islands with Rangitoto in the distance. Welcoming locals and tourists alike, Edwina Vine, manager of the Auckland Council holiday park, enjoys the surprise and delight of visitors as they discover this little piece of Auckland.
accommodation from simple powered sites for campers and campervans to cabins that range from standard to self-contained. Choose one of the four beachfront caravans, which offer the unique holiday experience of sleeping next to the ocean in a queen bed, with bunks for the youngsters next door. Complete with an outside deck, it’s the perfect set-up for families.
“Martins Bay offers a home away from home where people can relax on the beach, swim out to the pontoon, or jump in a kayak and explore the bay. There’s plenty to do or nothing at all,” says Edwina.
Guests can enjoy use of all the facilities, including a large kitchen and BBQs, hot showers and laundry to clean up after a day at the beach or exploring the local area.
Being a mum herself, Edwina ensures that families have lots of entertainment options. Over the winter the playground was completely upgraded and now includes swings and a climbing tower with slides. A foosball table in the recreation room sees plenty of action and there are games and books to borrow. Add to that the lure of kayaks and paddleboards for hire, as well as a wellstocked ice-cream and soft drink selection. Catering to all budgets, there’s a huge range of
Last year, Auckland Council decided to trial some glamping tents across their network of holiday places and Martins Bay jumped at the opportunity. Edwina loves being able to bring a different experience for those who want to try camping but don’t want to buy all the equipment and love to sleep in a comfortable bed. “The beachfront glamping tents were snapped up last summer, so we’ve increased the number of lotus belle tents and will add our first ecostructures in the new year. Eco-structures
offer a new luxury dimension to camping and are designed to withstand heavy rain for those occasional summer storms!” Martins Bay is a great base from which to discover the local area. The holiday park has a path directly into Scandrett Regional Park for those looking for some history, incredible views of the Hauraki Gulf and a good workout. Warkworth and Matakana are just down the road with great wineries and shops to explore. If fishing is your thing then Martins Bay has an excellent fish cleaning area, an authorised fish weigh-station, boat cleaning facilities, boat and trailer parking, bait for sale and an all-weather boat ramp not far away. With something for everyone and approximately ten minutes from Snells Beach, heading out from Warkworth, Martins Bay Holiday Park is perfect for those looking to get away for the week or the weekend. mbhpark@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz www.martinsbayholidaypark.co.nz

SHEAR FAMILY FUN WORDS
Sheepworld is a local landmark just north of Warkworth on State Highway One. It is easy to find, thanks to the pink sheep often seen grazing out front. The farm park, playground and Berries Café and Organic Ice Creamery, are open every day from 10am-4pm so you can stop in anytime. Everyone will enjoy feeding the animals which include donkeys, ponies, pigs, deer, emu, alpacas and of course sheep. A short, eco-discovery trail showcases New Zealand’s native bush and wetlands. They also have great onsite picnic areas as well as the stone field which features an adventure, terrain park and gives the kids a chance to run wild. The Sheep and Dog Show at Sheepworld is a huge tourist attraction and it is also a thoroughly enjoyable day out for locals. John is an engaging host and it is fascinating to learn how the sheepdogs are trained and see them in action. Best of all there are plenty of opportunities to get hands-on whether it is sorting sheep, having a go

Logan and his team offer an exciting range of cabinet options, a full breakfast and lunch menu and of course coffee and icecream. Berries Café provides the perfect spot for kids parties in conjunction with the farm park and the onsite playground.
There are special Sunday Fundays each week throughout the holidays with an eco-trail tour, animal talks, and up-close animal encounters with Bunny the goat, Ruby the pig and Herbie the ram and many other farmyard friends. There will also be different activities available each week with the details being published on Sheepworld’s Facebook page. The idea of life on the farm has always been a part of who Kiwis are. IT’S ALL ABOUT TRANSPARENCY WORDS
Glass Bottom Boat owner, Scott Pennington, has worked hard to make this year easier and safer for visitors to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. “The boat is no longer going right around the island in order to create a safe zone next to Goat Island and through the channel. Together with the other operators, we’ve created a Management Plan for the reserve to give everyone the most enjoyable and safest outcome.” Glass Bottom Boat Tours is not just about the boat either. A visit to their website shows you can hire snorkelling gear and kayaks and they also organise group tours and team building days. “We’ve also gone paperless at the beach,” Scott tells me. “It’s all done on tablets now so you can talk to any of our crew and they can multi-book, on the spot, for any of our activities.” For the peak summer months, however, booking ahead through the website is the best way to

ensure a great day at the reserve and pre-booking and multi-bookings attract good discounts. An important aspect of Scott’s operation this summer is the arrival of new team members who he is nurturing into long-term roles with the company. “I’ve loved working with my daughter in this amazing environment so it’s great to have a father and son joining us as well as sisters from Germany. We’re very family oriented and we love hosting families.” A trip on the Glass Bottom Boat will take you via the kelp, kina, eagle rays and big snapper, to North Reef and the caves at the back of Goat Island, before returning via any of the other highlights that can change daily. Scott encourages guests to take the time to do all the activities available, during their visit – book the boat, kayak and snorkelling – all you need to do is bring your lunch.
“People want to go back in time when they visit Goat Island,” says Scott. “They want to see things the way they used to be. So it’s not about building it out and commercialising it, it’s about sustainability and preserving that experience of seeing a pristine environment. Our buzz is seeing people come out of the water with a grin from ear to ear.” Glass Bottom Boat Tours will be running seven days a week from 15 December through to the end of February and they run six to nine trips per day depending on the weather and tide.

There’s lots of information to be gleaned from a visit to the Reptile Park. For instance: there are only two families of lizard in New Zealand – all are either geckos or skinks. Skinks’ scales overlap, making them shiny, whereas gecko scales don’t – they have a velvety, matt look.

PADDLING THE PUHOI RIVER WORDS
Summer is here and it’s the perfect time of year to get outside. If getting off the beaten path is your cup of tea, a self-guided canoe trip down the Puhoi river could be just what you need. Puhoi River Canoes is one of the areas most wellestablished activities having been set up over 28 years ago, in the heart of Puhoi Village. Kate and George Freeman bought Puhoi River Canoes in March last year, as part of a plan to move back to New Zealand from Perth. They wanted an opportunity which would give them a lifestyle change and allow them to spend more time in the outdoors. They are loving living in the Puhoi Village, with its peaceful laidback country charm and running Puhoi River Canoes from their new home on the river. Kate's enthusiasm for the

tours is contagious and it is easy to see why Puhoi River Canoes is getting such rave reviews for their customers.
pukekos and kingfishers amongst the trees. The trip is an easy paddle, as the tide does most of the work, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
The Puhoi River Canoe trip takes about one and a half to two hours and is suitable for people of all fitness levels aged three years and up. It is a great day out allowing you to see a different part of New Zealand. The tour is unguided, as Kate says, “There is only one way to go so don’t worry you can’t get it wrong, just follow the current.” Before each trip begins you will get a full briefing including a summary of basic kayaking rules, a map of the river and basic paddling instruction. Of course, lifejackets are provided as part of the kayak hire. Being in a kayak is a great way to see some of the local birdlife which includes herons,
Bookings are essential as the river is tidal - you start at Wenderholm on the incoming tide and at Puhoi on the outgoing tide so this means that the timing changes slightly each day. Once you have finished your paddle Puhoi village offers plenty of options for a snack at the Puhoi Village Store or a cold one at the Puhoi Pub. You can also bring your own picnic. So head over and enjoy the slower pace of life on the river and take the time to truly relax and unwind this summer.

A stunning 110-year-old royal carriage, pulled by their white dressage horse Jazz, can be spotted carrying bridal couples from St Andrew’s Church in Matakana Country Park, as well as wedding venues and vineyards around the region. “Seeing people have a wonderful time, and knowing you’ve played a part in creating it, is so lovely,” says Christine. “We enjoy getting the horses plaited up, brushed and beautiful.” “The pony parties are also getting incredibly popular. We have a party shed with all the decorations and a kitchen for self-catering. Each child gets a pony ride and then everyone goes in the carriage together – and they’re all so happy!”

As well as taking care of their event business and their six horses, the Monaghans also manage the Country Park’s grazing, equestrian centre and dressage arena. “We look after horses during holidays, or horses that need adjustment and training,” says Christine, who was one of the founding members of Warkworth Dressage Group. The Monaghans have a history in film and television, and still do a bit of work in the industry. Patrick does movie editing and Christine specialises in music. Combining her passion for dressage and melodies, Christine creates award-winning musical freestyles for Grand Prix dressage tests. Many riders have been bringing her compositions with them to Horse of the Year and even to the Olympics.
Patrick used to be part of the Kaipara Hunt, and became interested in carriage driving when filming the harness races at Alexandra Park. This inspired him to get his own amateur licence, and to eventually one late night bringing home Max – a bay standardbred who has gained a special place in Patrick’s heart. “Max was a reasonably successful racehorse and had a challenging life at the racetracks,” says Patrick. “He’s a fantastic schoolmaster for anyone learning to drive, but on the other hand he has terrible ground manners. Despite his vices, we love him to bits and he’ll never leave our home.”

2km one way, 1hr 30 min return. Easy walking track: suitable for people of most ages and fitness levels. Dogs with a DOC permit for recreational hunting or management purposes only. The Waipu Caves track is located off State Highway One, on Waipu Caves Road, south of Whangarei near Waipu. To reach Waipu Caves Road from SH1 take either Shoemaker Road, from Waipu or Springfield Road from the north. The track starts at the Whangarei District Council reserve, by the cave's entrance, off Waipu Caves Road. There is a large flat area suitable for picnics and a Whangarei District Council administered public toilet at this point. The entrance to the caves is directly across the Council Reserve before the track starts.
ACCALIA
GUILFORD
Look across the large flat grassed area for the orange post, which indicates the start of the track. Cross the large concrete culvert and start climbing your way out of the Waipu Caves valley. The track passes through the Waipu Caves Scenic Reserve; after meandering among karst limestone formations it climbs up steeply, across areas of open grass and regenerating bush, before ending at a gate through to private farmland. The track ends on the ridgeline where you will be rewarded with panoramic views right across the Whangarei Harbour to Bream Head and out to the Hen and Chicken Islands. You must return back the same way. The natural heritage values of ‘karst’ areas are high as karst surface landforms provide a variety of habitats for plant species that are restricted
to or favour growing on calcareous soils. Karst landscapes are of particular significance to Maori, which is enshrined in the tikanga and kawa (sacred customs and ceremonies) of those with the whakapapa to talk about them. Karst areas are important sites for geological, geomorphological, palaeontological, and climatological studies. Bones of bats, birds, amphibians, and reptiles are commonly found in caves. Some caves also contain remains of fossil invertebrates, often of previously unknown or locally extinct species. The caves are wet and slippery inside. The inner cave area is suitable for experienced cavers only. A torch and suitable footwear are necessary. Sinkholes are a common feature of karst landscapes.

PROPERTY SHOWCASE
HARBOURSIDE ESTATE – MANGAWHAI VILLAGE
For one lucky visitor
Dubbed ‘Magical’ by the locals, the Mangawhai lifestyle experience is more that of a neverending summer holiday than the day-to-day grind of commuter life. Here, in this growing township upon land previously owned by Mangawhai Tavern since 1865, resides Harbourside Estate, a successful boutique development of 24 freehold lots. Once also used as the Village’s sports field, the grounds are now more focussed upon relaxation than aerobics with a large orangery and sparkling swimming pool for residents to enjoy. That’s not to say they need to live a quiet life either with a myriad of water and land activities locally to partake in as they desire. The savvy developers employed Andrew Simpson of Wiredog Architects to create their three designs. Andrew had not only grown up in coastal New Zealand but during his internship in Japan, was strongly influenced by small spaces that did not diminish, but rather, improved quality of life. That said, the three designs available to purchasers are not tiny, the smallest at 102m2. These contemporary homes are highly energy ADVERTORIAL

efficient, extremely functional in their separation of living and sleeping areas and waste no space. A reflection of the 16 varieties of 450 citrus trees that adorn common areas and subtly divide the sites from one another, each design is named after a citrus variety. There is the two-storeyed Seville, a one and a half floor Clementine and the single level Lisbon. Purchasers can choose from a variety of interior styling choices and there is also a degree of flexibility within the floor plans for owners to customise their new home to suit their lifestyle. Covenants require that at least one owner on the title be over 50. All are members of the Residents Society and own a 1/24th share of the common land. Residents, Lou and Robyn had been fishing when I met up with them, and were busy sharing the wealth of their spoils with fellow residents. “On a Saturday, we roll open the sliders, let the sunshine in and imbibe of the festive atmosphere the morning markets bring” adds Robyn. On Friday evenings the little community gather for shared platters and a drink in the orangery.
In a town where waterside properties come at a premium, this easy-care option is affordable with house and land packages starting at just $666,795. To investigate this estate further, Laureen and Letitia of Bayleys invite you to attend their open homes on Saturdays from 11am ‘til 12pm commencing 12th January 2019, or to call and book an appointment. As a further incentive, we have on offer a beautiful basket made up of local goodies for one lucky person. All you need to do is come along to our open home, fill in your feedback and you will be in the draw to win. ARTISAN BAKER IN THE HEART OF MATAKANA Matakana Village welcomes another artisan producer into the fold, with the opening of Ringawera Baker. Matakana Coffee Roasters were the trailblazers, roasting their beans onsite, with both Honest Chocolat and Matakana Deli following a little over a year ago. Now we're lucky to have another expert producer creating fresh, handmade bread right in the heart of Matakana Village. Think fresh-baked focaccia… mouth-watering pastries... and delectable brioche! Ringawera Baker, Patrick Griffiths, is now selling fresh baked goods at both the weekly Matakana Farmers’ Market and from his new home in the Village - right next door to the Matakana Deli. Patrick has been living and baking in Matakana for just over a year now, after making the move from Te Whau Peninsula on Waiheke Island where he had built up a loyal following over the eight-year period that Ringawera existed on Waiheke. In 2009 Patrick won a coveted Cuisine Artisan Award for his Sesame Seed Lavash and undoubtedly his faithful followers will make the trip to Matakana Village to taste his bread again. After a successful year running the Ringawera Café locally at Morris and James, the opportunity arose to create a ‘micro bakery’ right in the heart of Matakana Village. Ringawera - a figurative term for people who work in the kitchen and their hot hands from the fires and ovens, will be open every day 7am-4pm. Patrick is baking onsite, from scratch, using quality ingredients with no additives or preservatives and organic where possible. Visitors will be able to see and smell the bread arriving hot out of the oven with an open kitchen visible from the front of the store. You will be spoilt for choice with a wide range of bread on offer: sourdough, ciabatta, baguettes, focaccia, rewena, mixed grain and organic rye sourdough just to name a few! If you’re after something to eat on the spot, choose from the fresh focaccias and paninis filled with deli meats and cheeses, salads, pickles and relishes. And of course, let’s not forget the
Ozone coffee, pastries, croissants and brioche! Pull up a stool and savour the smells, sounds and flavours at Ringawera Baker, next time you’re visiting the village. Open daily 7am-4pm. 2 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana

THE POINT WELLS GABLES WORDS
JOHN
FERGUSON
“Under the boardwalk, down by the sea,” sung The Drifters on their famous 1964 hit. This Point Wells Gables house doesn’t quite match the lyrics, but it is on the Omaha estuary and a striking internal boardwalk is one of the key features of the award-winning design from architects Aaron Paterson and Steven Lloyd. The centre of this beautifully crafted, timber dwelling is two farmhouse-like wings running north to south, connected by the boardwalk, which goes east to west and creates an interconnected series of living spaces and courtyards. There is also a gabled guest wing and garage that provide a bookend to the main structure. “Beautifully simple but very complex,” is how Steven sums up the design. “There is a lot of detail.” Aaron continues, “Everything you can see has got a connection. There is nothing seamless about it so you can see all the elements that come together to make the house – the fireplace, the cladding, the exposed beams all have that sense of being crafted. A lot of modernism is a reductive process – all the construction is concealed – but this house is the antithesis of that.”

Completed in 2015, the Point Wells Gables has won a string of honours, including the Residential Architectural Excellence trophy at the New Zealand Wood Resene Timber Design Awards. It was also shortlisted for Home of the Year at the Home Magazine Awards in 2017. According to Steven and Aaron, one of the joys of the project was the opportunity to deploy different aspects of traditional timber construction throughout the house and create the perfect balance for the different colours, grains and textures. They also like the way the open plan design supports how each of the living spaces is used and the way the large pivot doors and windows provide light and warmth to the different rooms. “Once you move into the building, at different times of the day there are different spaces you can be in,” Aaron says. “There is a real celebration of lightness and darkness as you walk through the building. Big cathedral space is automatically appealing to people but there are also lots of little spots and rooms in the building that have lovely light qualities, often because of the very high roof. The interior in spots can be dark because of the roof but there are always moments of light.” Although based in central Auckland, the pair have worked on a variety of different projects in this part of the world. “We know the area well,” says Steve, as they have recently been working on houses in Mangawhai and Matakana, plus another in Point Wells. But while Point Wells Gables was very much a high-end assignment, they stress that they can cater for a wide range of budgets. “We’re also doing a lot of really good, robust and economical houses in the area,” Aaron says. “We like to keep things relatively simple in the way the plan makes really lovely spaces. We work to all different scales and to all different budgets.”

NORTH RODNEY BLUE LIGHT WORDS
“I’ve been doing this for 23 years now and what keeps me going are the positive stories about life choices that our young people have made,” says Shane Gould of North Rodney Blue Light, based in Wellsford. “We see them find their way and that’s a good feeling. I think we also create some wonderful memories for them.” Blue Light’s aim is to use fun and challenging outdoor activities, such as waka ama, fishing, SUP, kayaks, mountain biking and snorkelling, to create better relationships between youth, the community and police. “We try to engage with young people who might not normally get these opportunities for economic or social reasons,” explains Shane. “One of our best camps that we run for teenagers, is the life skills programme in association with the NZ Defence Force. They run a fantastic course and I send a lot of people there for character building and leadership skills.”
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
Staying relevant and innovative is vital to the programme’s success, says Shane, so they are always responsive to suggestions from youth, schools and those with relevant skills to share. “We have some of our young people joining the emergency services here, like the fire service and St John’s, so we introduced a three-day training workshop for the various emergency services and that went down really well,” Shane. “We also introduced a fishing training programme this year. Coastguard, Fisheries and our local fishing club got involved and the kids learned how to drive a boat, do a basic rescue and tie a fishing knot, amongst other things.” Helping to develop improved social skills for the young people attending the Blue Light programmes is a vital part of Shane’s work. “We don’t allow mobile phones on our camps and the kids find that hard to deal with. Research I’ve been reading shows that face-to-face socialisation is so important for the mental health of our youth.”
Shane is aware of the need for a succession plan so that the programme stays strong and finding new talent to fulfill the role of coordinator is one of his challenges for 2019. “We will also be developing a driver training programme next year and I will need help developing, running and funding that,” he says. For any families or youth interested in being involved in the Blue Light programmes, visit the website and get in touch by phone or email or talk to any of the Blue Light volunteers.

ART
BENT COPPER WORDS
Wayne Ross takes the iconic kiwi No.8 wire mentality to a whole new level. Fuelled with a propensity to explore and experiment, along with a belief that life will always supply what you need, he has discovered a diverse range of creative mediums that have enabled him to provide an income and nourish his soul. His artistic flair is evident the moment you arrive at the gate, which is sculptured from driftwood and tea tree adorned with copper designs synonymous with his alias, ‘Bent Copper.’ The ambiance of his home embraces you, taking you into the world of an enigmatic character who exudes enthusiasm for the creative process as a quintessential part of human evolvement. Chuckling over coffee, Wayne shared how his ‘can do’ attitude backfired when he attempted to set himself up as a sign writer in his teens - because it looked easy. “I clearly couldn’t. Fortunately for me, the owner of Colourstone Signs in Takapuna saw something in me that wasn’t evident in
PHILIPPA
ROSS
the signs I was producing and he offered me an apprenticeship!” In later years, Wayne went on to weave his ingenuity and love of repurposing materials into building a two storey, three-bed house entirely out of recycled materials from Trade and Exchange. “I applied what I knew and asked when I didn’t. You can’t put life on hold until you’ve worked it all out - if you do, you’ll never start. You learn to trust the process and dig deep to find solutions and when things don’t quite go to plan, there’s a whole lot of learning that transpires from mistakes. You can’t fail if you try, but you can fail if you don’t try. Once the house was complete, I channelled my energy into rebuilding a 1939 Chevrolet from a trailer-load of parts, just because I wanted to - and could.” In the late 90s, he turned his hand to creating water fountains from old copper spouting that was being discarded, because they were no longer in vogue. Ironically copper became fashionable

again within just five years, the cost rising from 70 cents to $17 a kilo. The price hike curtailed his use of large quantities of copper, so he started exploring ways of integrating sculptures onto paintings, experimenting with the different effects that scorching, airbrushing, adding plaster, mixing oil and acrylics and leaving it out in the rain would have. For me, the pièce de résistance had to be the kauri, hand-carved guitar body he’s currently working on – a fitting complement to a singer, songwriter and lead guitarist of a three-piece rock blues band called T160. His advice to anyone who wants to pursue a creative path is, “to not think too much or you’ll never get started. It’s not about the final piece, it’s the process, that enriches your life, so just keep trying until you find your own bent!” 027 466 5565 www.facebook.com/bent.copper.18
