HUTCH & COOP When roaming dogs broke open their rabbits’ cage and killed his daughters’ beloved pets, Chris decided to make a predator-proof hutch. “My wife objected to pets in cages because she said it looked like a prison on the lawn, so I thought I’d fix that too!” Years later when chickens joined the menagerie, Chris designed ‘The Coop’. “They’re planetfriendly and built to last...but also lovely to look at in the garden instead of some rickety eyesore.” Customers are delighted - some have even given their Coops and Hutches names! A Tangible Story in Wood NZ Native Riverwood is a timber salvage company, specialising in recovering native timbers from the forgotten depths of New Zealand’s rivers and repurposing them for today. These submerged logs represent the only significant remaining supply of timber from New Zealand's old growth native forests. Photos Gareth Moon

NZ Native Riverwood (Riverwood) is a small family business situated in Mangakahia on the Kaipara Harbour. Four generations have farmed 1,200 acres here, during which time strong relationships with elders in the community have been built. As the current primary owner of the farm, Stuart Ruddell, plans his retirement, the younger, innovative farm management led by Glenn Ruddell, has been diversifying the farm offering to achieve a higher yield and have a positive impact on the social and environmental footprint of the land. This research has led to an exciting opportunity: NZ Native Riverwood. An eight-year test-phase ensued researching demand, supply capability and the commercial appetite. The business of recovery and extraction of these long buried New Zealand native logs was to be in the rivers surrounding the Kaipara region, as this district was prime logging land in the 17001900. Logs were floated down the rivers, some of which found their resting place submerged at the bottom, where they have been preserved in the silts and sands. Many of the logs still have the original logging marks on one end and these marks indicated the estimated timber content and the logging or milling company.

Riverwood specialises in the recovery of five main species of timber: Kauri, Rimu, Matai, Totara and Kaihikatea. In 1993 an amendment to the forests Act 1949 brought an end to unsustainable harvesting and clear felling of indigenous species, making the wood that is recovered from the rivers and swamps the only significant supply of old growth timber left in New Zealand.

in the water. Submerged trees in the river also provide a habitat for the invasive weed, Lagarosiphon, which strangles native plants and upsets the ecology of the rivers. By extracting the problem (the logs), natural flow is restored. Additionally, the riverbanks are being restored by planting what was there in the first place, replanting with the likes of Flax, Cara Secta and Manuka.

The product that is retrieved, once dried and worked, is some of the most beautiful timber the world has to offer – rich in colour and texture and layered with history. Currently, without any marketing initiative, the demand outweighs supply, and word is spreading to well-known architects, designers and property developers as well as overseas buyers.

NZ Native Riverwood continues to evolve, focusing on river restoration and has selffunded this with over 10,000 plants being planted or grown in their plant nursery. In future, the company plans to invest some of their profits in replanting trees along riverbanks to prevent erosion and protect the health of the rivers.

Extracting the timber from the riverbeds of the Kaipara was done in close consultation with all regional Iwis supporting the initiatives by Glenn Ruddell and the Ruddell family to improve environmental and social uplift in the region.Through working with mana whenua elders over years, Riverwood has evolved its business around the concept of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship). The ecosystems of the Kaipara Harbour’s sunken timber causes excess sediment

The social impact of Riverwood growing, while still in early stages, is visible. They currently employ up to 10 local Northland workers with a knowledge of the region and a desire to stay in the areas they are from. This, combined with creating a better future for their families and community, means these young people have a sense of purpose and belonging. Visit their website for more information. www.nz-native-riverwood.com admin@nzriverwood.com

Tinseltown comes to Pakiri If you enjoyed the recent film ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’, you may be surprised to know that two key players in the production have been hunkered down in Pakiri over lockdown. Words Kathy Hunter

Nigel Bluck’s family home near the deserted beach is worlds away from his busy life in Los Angeles, where he’s lived with partner Jac Fitzgerald and eight-year-old son Leo for the last eight years. They’ve been brought home by Covid-19, which scuppered their work on the early stages of a film set in Colombia starring Nicolas Cage and Benicio del Toro. But lockdown here was idyllic enough for Nigel to admit to feeling a certain level of survivor guilt, especially considering the current state of their adopted country. Jac and Nigel are both Directors of Photography or cinematographers and usually work together on feature films – unusual for couples in Hollywood. A DP’s job is to realise the creative vision of the director on film. They tend to get involved in the early stages of a project as an integral part of its ongoing development. They’ll decide on camera movement and placement, shot size and composition, aspect ratio and focus. A lot of this happens before the film has even started shooting. Once it’s happening, they manage all cameras and usually the lighting, too. Nigel and his sister Jess (also a director and photographer, now teaching) were born in Gisborne and the family moved to Switzerland when their father, John Bluck, the

ex-dean of Christchurch Cathedral, became Head of Communications for the World Council of Churches. Back in New Zealand for high school in Dunedin, Nigel went on to study film at Ilam in Canterbury and later in Sydney. The first ‘proper’ film he made was the making of ‘Heavenly Creatures’, a 1994 Peter Jackson feature. Next came the New Zealand film ‘Stickmen’ – he was so young he was only allowed to be DP on the film if legendary kiwi cinematographer Alun Bollinger would do camera. He did, and it received critical acclaim. Nigel was just 27. His career took off with some big-budget visual effects work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. “My life became a series of airports and hotels,” he says. He’s shot foreign language films in Iran, Taiwan and France and worked with incredible actors: Ewen McGregor, Steve Buscemi, Toni Collette, Ryan Reynolds and now Shia LaBeouf in ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’. This big-hearted film by two firsttime directors became the highestgrossing independent film of 2019, and Nigel’s cinematography was a big part of that. His clever, multi-camera work combines with mostly natural lighting in a hauntingly beautiful landscape to make a memorable movie.

Winter School Holidays Package 5 Days 4 Nights for $6,720 incl GST

There were standout performances by LaBeouf and his co-star Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down Syndrome. LeBeouf is famously intense in his full-immersion roles but the pair formed a close friendship on the film. “Shia sees a lot of Zack and is helping him negotiate Hollywood,” says Nigel. A big change of direction for him was being DP on the ‘True Detective’ TV series. “I learned a lot, not all good, but some excellent things did come out of it. I guess it highlighted the way Hollywood works – the town looks after itself and you have to learn to make it work for you.” The whole family loves their life in LA. “It’s multicultural, creative and constantly surprising,” says Nigel. “In 20 minutes we can be in the desert or in the mountains high above the city. I love to get that perspective on the city; I imagine decades of speech bubbles about the film industry rising into the air above the city…” Top travel tips? “Avoid the tours and head to East LA, Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs.” But Pakiri keeps drawing the family back. “Empty beaches, empty waves, dirt roads and green hills… it’s a very special place and it keeps us sane just knowing it’s here.” nigel@nigelbluck.com

Oh The Places You Can Go… Words Clare Dill

As we emerge from the restrictions of the daily walk around the block and weekly trip to the supermarket to return to appointments, meetings and after school activities, it won’t be long before we feel like we need a holiday! While international travel is off the agenda, and the budget may be a bit tight from weeks of reduced income, luckily Rodney is full of local attractions – some wellknown and others hidden gems, which also means no need to spend hours in a car with your bubble (because let’s face it we have all had our quota of time spent together in confined spaces). It’s no secret that we offer some of the top food and wine experiences in the North Island – with so much to choose from you could use up an entire holiday sampling the delights from coast to coast. Just a few highlights include the international dishes with a New Zealand flavour on the menu at Leigh Sawmill Café, with the novelty of live

gigs (remember those?), through to enjoying cocktails or a craft beer on the balcony at Wharf Street Bistro. Sampling some of the best cheeses, or ice cream in the country at Puhoi Cheese Factory while the kids run around on the playground. Maybe indulge in a drink at the Puhoi Pub or Tahi bar on your way home (you may want to book a babysitter and taxi if they have a band on). After so long without shops and crowds if you want to jump completely back into the human experience, the markets are back! Matakana is a well-known hangout, but you should also explore the Mangawhai Tavern Markets with live music in the garden bar and waterside setting which will give you that miles away from home vibe. Usually one of the ‘to do’s’ on the list when travelling away from home are the museums. This region has some real hidden gems of museums that share the rich story of the region and its people. Check out their

Taste of Brick Bay

miniatures exhibition including a miniature Hogwarts’ castle at Warkworth Museum. If you feel like a bit of a drive, the Kauri Museum in Matakhoe shares the history of the Kauri tree and its significance to New Zealand. While over at Mangawhai Museum they showcase the stories of those from the region, its environment and the history of Mangawhai as a prominent holiday spot. After all that stimulation, if you want to do a bit of social distancing again for old times’ sake, you can enjoy one of the many cycle tracks, beaches or walks in the area. If you’ve explored the more well-known spots, check out the Mita Bay walk at Mahurangi Regional Park or head further south and do the village loop track at Puhoi or the Beverley Price loop track at the Pohuehue Scenic Reserve. Take some time this year to get to know the area and support our local operators. I think you’ll find there really is no place like home.

FARAH'S KITCHEN Farah's Kitchen was started in February 2019 in Mangawhai, New Zealand. Farah, after completing law school in Sydney, traveled to the Caribbean to spend time with her family. Instead of working in law, Farah decided to start making sourdough and croissants. Word soon spread and she started selling her products to friends, family and at the local farmers' market. With a focus on plant based, keto, organic and paleo options, Farah's Kitchen quickly expanded their products to include seed loaves, juices, smoothies, immunity shots, salads, soups, acai bowls and plant based treats at the local farmers' markets, and locals around Mangawhai. Farah's Kitchen's philosophy is to stay true to their homemade and handmade with passion practices. Everything is made in small batches, with the utmost care, using the purest ingredients they can source, especially locally. They will be delivering to Auckland, Matakana, Mangawhai and Langs Beach all winter and look forward to sharing their products with you. 029 123 2735 | www.instagram.com/farahskitchen_nz

Great coffee, incredible food, bread and pastries, fresh local produce, art, clothing, skin care, plants, jewellery, furniture, toys, candles, local olive oil, homewares, kiddies face painting...the list goes on. Relax, Retreat and Restore at Riverside Matakana Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

Turning off Green Road and rolling down the lush driveway lined with

natives, the landscape opens up into a series of picturesque scenes. Olive groves that produce delicious oil. The pond with the two

resident runner ducks, Jemima and George. The vineyards and the flowering Camellias, all lined by the glittering turquoise river.

"It's very private and secluded here. It’s a hidden gem but so close to

Matakana Village. Once people find us, they keep coming back," says manager Michael Bolton.

The multi-purpose property offers a conference facility for up to 34 people. The point of difference for corporate guests, compared to

going to a hotel or conference centre, is the personalised service.

“We like to host our corporate guests the way we host guests in our own home,” Michael says. “It's so lovely seeing everybody enjoying themselves - not only here but around Matakana too. I'm sure people look years younger when they leave!” The accommodation offering consists of four clusters with a total of 17 self-contained architecturally designed ‘baches’. Each has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, so they are ideal for a family or for two couples. They are cosy in winter and comfortable in summer, thanks to open gas fires and air conditioning. There’s lots of space for children to run around which makes Riverside popular with family groups and groups of friends – some book out a whole cluster for the weekend to celebrate a special event. Recent challenges have truly made Michael appreciate his staff. “Until recently we’ve been less busy because of Covid-19, so people who are normally servicing guests have been helping out with painting and sprucing up the baches,” he says. “We have a lovely and dedicated team and are lucky in that everyone has been flexible and understanding.” In summer guests can relax around the riverside swimming pool, having a drink in the bean bags while surrounded by palm trees and other tropical plants. Guests with a bit more energy can make use of the tennis and petanque courts. Others bring their own kayaks and paddle boards. “Some of our guests love to fish off our pontoon, and teach their children to fish,” says Michael. “They quite often catch their dinner – mostly snapper, and once even a king fish!” 09 423 0353 www.riversidematakana.co.nz

Barn Park Gollum had ‘his precious’ in the form of a ring and there is no question that a stable of classic Volkswagens and Porsches would fall into the same category. This passionate New Zealand-based collector (classic Porches, VW Beetles and the VW Kombi) having his lifelong dream, to create a building that would both protect his investment and create an environment for enjoying his collection and the finer things in life, has now been fulfilled. A Customkit barn with high ceilings, sound-proofing and temperature control capabilities was the starting point. The burnished concrete floors sparkle under the reflection of the industrial-style lighting. Overall the interior look is reminiscent of the German Bauhaus design style, one where art and creativity have a direct relationship with technology and peoples’ living requirements. The black painted LVL beams and ply walls and ceilings make for a dramatic backdrop that is both rugged and refined. Clean lines and open spaces dominate the areas dedicated to the parking and work areas for the automobiles. Near one of the entrances is a luxury area pandering to human needs, including a bespoke bar area, fireplace and lounge area. Sexy, sophisticated and stylish certainly applies to the world of Porsche and this alluring Barn Park pleasure dome.

Autumnal Grape Vine Pruning Brick Bay Vineyard shares some of their tips for pruning your vine to achieve optimal results. At Brick Bay, with just under four hectares planted in vines, the team work on a two cane VSP (vertical shoot position) trellis system. As a Certified Sustainable vineyard, the vineyard management focus is on keeping an open canopy to offset any fungal issues that may arise from humidity, while promoting the health of the vine to boost the natural defences of each plant. Their pruning is

all carried out by hand through the winter months, once the leaves have dropped and the shoots are woody. It’s important to only prune on a dry day - ideally you want as many dry days after pruning as possible, so don’t prune the day before a weather bomb! www.brickbay.co.nz

3. TYING DOWN

2. CANE SELECTION

Wrap one cane each side onto the wire, tie off securely and cut to length. Cut the second cane on each side down to a spur with two buds. You’ll be left with two canes in total, one on each side wrapped and tied.

You want to keep two healthy, strong canes in good positions on each side of the trunk. One will be wrapped onto the wire, the other will be cut down to a spur with two buds. Remove everything other than four canes that you have selected to keep.

4. PAINT To protect your pruning wounds from fungal disease and insects, it’s really important to paint all cuts with the pruning paint.

Trees respond to a good winter trim, rewarding you with more spring buds, stronger growth and abundant fruit. At TreeContracts we can take care of all your tree, hedge and chipping needs. Winter Fire Cider Taking a tablespoon of this tonic daily throughout winter is a way to build your immune system during the colder months. It’s full of anti-viral and immune boosting properties from herbs and plants, whilst also naturally aiding sinus decongestion and improving circulation during the colder months.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 Large glass jar (that can be screwed or sealed tight)

Grate or finely chop ginger, turmeric and horseradish and add to your glass jar.

1 Litre apple cider vinegar 2 Lemons

Add the juice and zest from the lemons and oranges.

2 Oranges

Finely chop garlic, onion, chillies and herbs, then place in the jar.

1-2 Large pieces of horseradish root, about 10cm total. Scrub well.

Pour the apple cider vinegar over your ingredients until they are well covered (try to have a five cm of covering).

1 Large piece of ginger

Before screwing the lid on, you might like to place some baking paper between the lid and jar as the vinegar can erode metal lids.

5 Thyme sprigs 5 Rosemary sprigs 2 Heads of garlic 1 Large onion 5 Pieces of fresh turmeric (or use ground turmeric) 2-3 Fresh Habanero or Jalapeno chillies (or use what you have growing in the garden) Herbs (optional): use whatever you have growing such as Nasturtium, Gotu-kola, Feverfew and Lemonbalm

Store in a dry, dark place for three weeks, shaking the jar every few days. After three weeks, place all the ingredients into a blender and blend finely. Place the ingredients back into the jar and leave for another two to three more weeks. After three weeks, strain the liquid using cheesecloth or a sieve, squeezing all the ingredients to get the liquid goodness out. Place the liquid in a glass container and enjoy straight or with water and honey added. I like to store in the fridge.

Blending the Old with the New Marrying vintage with modern, can produce a room scheme that looks evolved and considered. Blending modern trends with inherited or collected pieces can be tricky and creating a balance so that the room looks elegant rather than untidy or a mishmash of junk can be challenging. So why go for it? Recycling or repurposing of course means less items end up in landfill, but also these items were often purpose built and so have great durability and were meant to last! Introducing just a few key pieces can inject character and often help solve storage problems or just help to fill an empty space.

What was initially intended as a holiday home for a semi-retired couple, became a permanent home, once completed in 2014, as the owners loved the house and local lifestyle. The brief for the Sandspit House was for a low maintenance, contemporary coastal home, with guest bedrooms and a bunk room for adult children and grandchildren to stay. The house needed to capture the views which are across the road to the bay, yet at the same time provide privacy from the road and park, and from neighbouring houses to each side. Architect Julian Guthrie tells us, “The views are to the east so the house also needed to catch the north and west sun, and provide shelter from on shore winds.” This striking build features a mix of white plastered precast panels offset with stained

cedar features, creating a timeless coastal palette of white and timber. The cedar eaves that overhang the decks also fold up and around the building in a sculptural manner, contrasting with the white concrete walls give an additional depth to the design. “The land was quite steep so we needed to step the house up the site over three levels,” says Julian. This stunning home’s main area is on one middle level that opens up to outdoor living spaces at each side, with the lower level offering a large garage and storage spaces. The master bedroom suite is placed above on a third level, in a crows nest position, featuring a stunning glazed stairwell opening up the home to a flood of light and gaining all the views, but still retaining privacy from the road by being set back.

“For the interior we used polished concrete floors for the living spaces for its minimal look and incredibly practical beachside living,” he says. “We also used white corian for the kitchen and bathroom vanities, providing a seamless minimal aesthetic that is very easy to care for.” The home itself is wrapped around a sunny central courtyard terrace which provides the perfect space to entertain. All the areas connect into it or look over it, with the ground floor bedrooms all having direct access into courtyard garden spaces also. Every aspect of outdoor space has been utilised as there is also a deck across the road frontage and a delightful balcony off the master bedroom, so always somewhere to celebrate the sun and views. www.julian-guthrie.com

Hooks and Scales Words Kathy Hunter

In a tiny bay between Matakana and Leigh lives Frances Dickinson. She’s a musician, songwriter, vocal coach…and shark enthusiast. If she’d been born here, she may have become a marine biologist, but being from the north of England, that wasn’t an obvious option. So as a teenager she threw herself into her other great love, which has now become the driving force in her life: music.

artists who rapidly pivoted their gigs and releases to online platforms, but this doesn't replace the income of album sales or tours. We're lucky to have organisations such as Creative NZ and the NZ Music Commission, but buying music instead of streaming it and supporting our venues as much as possible is going to be crucial to the survival of NZ music moving forward.”

Frances is a songwriter and performer herself, but now she mostly divides her time between coaching musicians and co-writing with others. She has something called synaesthesia – a neurological condition which merges certain senses that wouldn’t normally be linked. It allows her to ‘see’ the patterns of sound, giving her a special insight into the building blocks of music. “When I’m co-writing, I help rework songs to make them successful; perhaps write a new section, or reshape the melody to strengthen the hook,” she says.

Hopefully the tide will now be turning for NZ musicians. And where there’s a turning tide, Frances Dickinson won’t be far away. www.establishmusic.com www.saveourvenues.co.nz

Recording artists also come to Frances at all stages of their careers for vocal coaching. She’s well-known in the industry for having worked with the likes of Six60, Leisure and Ella Yelich O’Connor – better known as Lorde. “It’s a misconception that good singers are naturally gifted. But everyone has the capacity to train their muscles and become a vocal athlete.” Ella was just 13 when she came to Frances. “We stripped her style down into parts like an engine to put it back together more effectively. We focused on techniques to give her better physical motor control and make her voice more dynamic without losing her authentic sound.” “For artists in development like Ella was, I become a member of their team (alongside management and the label) to mentor, train and support them through the process. For more established musicians, I work as a consultant, helping to solve vocal and performance issues. Sometimes I may have just an hour or two to work with an artist before they’re about to step on to a plane.”

“TELL YOUR SKIN, WINTER IS CANCELLED.” Dottir Skin + Beauty has just taken delivery of a new UltraSonophoresis machine, and to celebrate, all Ultra Signature facials booked this month will receive a free $35 sonophoresis upgrade. The machine uses low-frequency ultrasound technology to hyper-hydrate your skin at the deepest level, gaining maximum benefit from the Ultraceuticals skincare range. It’s a great way to get your skin feeling hydrated and fresh, ready to breeze through winter.

“It can be a bit pressured, but I love the problem-solving aspect of my job the most. And I get to talk to extremely interesting people about things I love: song-writing theory, vocal anatomy and pop music, which is very cool.” Down-time for Frances is mostly spent hanging out at the beach and walking her dog. The ocean is her happy place and the Matakana coast is teeming with marine life. “There are not many sharks to see straight off the beach but I've seen porcupine fish, kingfish and conger eels within 20 metres of the shoreline recently!” she says happily. The recent Covid-19 lockdown didn’t affect her too badly, since she has been working online for years with artists both nationally and internationally. But she acknowledges it’s been terrible for musicians. “I was hugely impressed by the response of many NZ

The Power of Positivity Words Christine Sheehy

Level 4 lockdown could have been a daunting prospect for a recent migrant, but well known British broadcaster and Matakana newcomer, Noel Edmonds was delighted to find his letterbox regularly stuffed with gifts from the neighbours. “People were always leaving avocados and oranges,” he recalls. “Bert from Four Square even dropped off a survival pack with masks, soups,” and even some local delicacies… ”Pineapple Lumps!” Now the former host of ‘Noel’s House Party’ and his wife Liz are repaying the kindness with the launch of ‘Positivity Matakana’, the first of 100 online radio stations nationwide created with the goal of helping businesses and communities recover from the Covid-19 lockdown. “One thing we love about New Zealand is that you can just walk into a shop and start a conversation,” says Noel. “The idea of wearing masks and queuing is so alien to that Kiwi style, that we wanted to find a way to bring communities back together.” The content is a little different from what you might hear on a commercial station, with no news and no paid commercials. Tune into the easy-listening and also pick up local tip offs such as Bacon Steve, reminding you

to pop in for free hash brown Wednesday. There’s also updates on projects from the Matakana Community Group, a notice about the Dome Valley landfill proposal, plenty of inspirational quotes and a dose of silliness appropriate to a network founded by the light entertainment star. The Edmonds’ love affair with Aotearoa began in 2016. They were becoming increasingly uneasy about the changing atmosphere in Europe and began feeling an inexplicable pull towards a country neither had visited. “It was almost like an animal feeling the call to migrate,” says Liz. The couple embarked on a 19-day tour from top to toe, to get a sense of the people and the country. But one village was missing from their itinerary: Matakana. It was only once back in Europe to pack up their lives, that friends shared photos of a secluded rural property. They rented it sight unseen. Both admit to feeling a little apprehensive as they drove up the dirt road - unheard of in the UK - last September, but it didn’t take long for the park-like property with its inviting pool and fruit trees dancing with Piwakawaka, to feel like home. “If you’re a spiritual person, you would accept that we’ve been guided here,” says Noel.

Noel and Liz say they came to New Zealand to make a contribution and with the help of project lead Lane Dawson and IT manager and Matakana Community Group Chair Rachel Demler, the nationwide Positivity Radio network was up and running in just six weeks. Positively Matakana and Positively Warkworth were among the first to hit the air. Any individual or community group can apply for a station, as long as they abide by the guiding principles of positivity and optimism. Positivity Radio provides the tech and communities provide the content, recording interviews, notices and local happenings on their smartphones. For Noel, who began his career in radio, it remains a powerful medium in a disconnected world. “You can share information so easily and in such a human way, with tone and passion that is lost in texts and tweets.” To get involved contact the team via production@positivitynz.radio Listen on www.positivity.radio

In the Pursuit of Happiness The clothing brand, ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ was established in Mangawhai by its young creator Joseph Kearns, while on a journey of his own.

Joseph (Jo) Kearns grew up in the Matakana/ Warkworth area and attended high school at Mahurangi College. With his friends going off to university, Jo had no idea what career path to follow and decided to take a year off to figure it out. He moved out to Mangawhai to be closer to his job as a Chef earlier this year. “I’ve always considered myself to have a creative mindset in most aspects of life really, I studied most arts in school, but I never really knew what I wanted to do while growing up.” “Being somewhat of an introvert at heart, this led me into dealing with anxiety, and later on depression. For a long time I was in a dark place, with what felt like nobody to talk to about it and no one to understand.” As New Zealand went into lockdown, due to Covid-19, Jo found himself filling his time by endlessly researching clothing brands and streetwear, something he has always been interested in. “I created an Instagram account, and it blew up far more than I

thought it would in such a short amount of time. I started posting every day the stories and the messages I wanted people to hear and resonate with. I was receiving so many messages from people who understood what I was trying to express, and that my work had connected with them.” About a week into lockdown Jo had personally designed about 30 different clothing pieces, and each had one thing in common - the theme of self love, self care, and pursuing true happiness. All inspired by his experiences and feelings, and created within his home. “I think the thing that makes the brand I created unique is the way it connects to people. I want to make sure people realise they are not alone, even though it feels that way. Depression and anxiety play a huge role in the society we live in, and I hope that by expressing my messages through clothing, I can do my part.” www.pursuitofhappiness.co.nz www.instagram.com/pursuitofhappinessnz TRENDS

Found objects inspired Paula even as a young child. She would spend countless hours assembling found objects to create environments for “creatures”. Later, she found a kindred spirit in the artist Hieronymus Bosch and his oil paintings of fantastical worlds. When the realities of life and motherhood came knocking on Paula’s door, she trained to teach others in art. After years of teaching in a structured educational setting, Paula met clay artist Judy Wood shortly after relocating to the Warkworth area with her growing family. “I was taking a break from teaching and I began a clay-making class with Judy.” Quickly, Paula found herself playing with the clay and experiencing the freedom clay lends itself to. “I would spend hours in Judy’s studio getting acquainted with the possibilities clay could offer me!”

Paula embraced her newfound affection in the unpredictable world of clay. The next step was enrolling and completing a Master of Fine Art with Honours. Through her focused studies of the absurd she rediscovered her passion for intuitivelyguided art creation. Harkening back to her early fascination with Bosch’s Renaissance painting, “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, Paula began experimenting with fibres and clay to create creatures, blurring the line between craft and fine art. She began toying with the notion of creating her own mythology. Travel has been an essential part of Paula’s development as an artist. She always keeps her heart and mind open to new places and cultures whenever she can. She travelled to Iran last year, “It was a huge inspiration to learn about Iranian mythology

and to be immersed in their incredible culture - there was an intense feeling of history everywhere.” Paula has gone back to teaching art full time, but still spends most of her free time creating new and engaging pieces of sculpture. Currently she has been working toward a solo exhibition at the Corban Estate Arts Centre to be held in six months. Paula is exploring an intersection of 1980’s videomusic pop culture and Paleolithic icons for this exhibit. Some of her works in progress include clay sculptures fashioned while immersed in lockdown Netflix bingeing. “Art, now more than ever, is my escape from a world of information overload.” www.instagram.com/paulafriis

Collifornia Dreaming Artform is proud to host Peter Collis, a wellknown New Zealand potter, with an exhibition on his return from an eight month sabbatical in Los Angeles, California. This adventure started after Julie, Peter’s wife, won a global acting award with her one-person show two years ago. Based on this success, and another award for a short film a few months later, the Collis duo headed up to LA last year on an adventure to crack the Hollywood market for 65-stunning women actors. All was heading in the right direction when... COVID 19...

Contemporary and the Craft in America Center. He became friends with art dealers in local galleries and swapped stories of dealing with one-of-a-kind large-scale ceramics in New Zealand and the USA.

Now back and waiting for round two of their adventure in LA, Peter has once found his love of the pottery wheel to turn his experience into significant objects, reflecting Mid-Century California and the LA art scene.

“The glazes used are almost a trip back in time. They represent the rich colours of the West Coast and the very dry hills surrounding LA, as well as the deep colours of water that are a rare commodity, yet every house has a large pool. LA is full of contradictions…”

Peter would wander the galleries and take time to reassess his work to date, and make some interesting plans for his work going forwards, visiting State Galleries, Craft

Back in 2005-2006, Clare Mora of Artform, took Peter to New York with her then company, Essenze, and exhibited at ‘Clodagh’, a famous interior design and art studio based on Broadway, NYC. Following this exhibition, a road-trip across the USA formed the base of the use of colour and glazes represented in the pieces exhibited.

On his return to Auckland and the ability to get back into his studio, Peter has enjoyed the freedom to make work as a result of this

introspection and re-evaluation of his work combined with the enormous amount of international study this time has allowed. The opportunity to exhibit this new work in Artform, Matakana has been the driving force for a burst of energy. The perfect platform for him to be able to put into practise the development of the wheel thrown and constructed form he is so well known for, and further them as vehicles for his exploration of colour and crystal glazes. This work responds to the LA environment and art world. In conjunction with the exhibition, Artform will be hosting an artist talk and interview, where the entertaining duo, Peter and Julie Collis, will tell tales of their LA adventure. ‘Collifornia Dreaming’, opens Saturday 4 July at Artform, 3-5pm. Register on the Artform website for the artist talk and interview held at the Matakana Cinema. Seats limited. www.artformgallery.co.nz

Raising The Game Against Eczema After healing her daughter’s eczema and allergies naturally, Maryana Lishman became a certified Integrative Nutrition Coach and founder of ‘Raised on Real Food’, a holistic skin and gut health virtual clinic where she has worked with hundreds of families worldwide and enjoys developing nourishing recipes.

“I never said it would be easy. I only said it would be worth it.” - Mae West. At five months of age, Maryana’s baby girl was losing weight, had raised lymph nodes and was increasingly covered in inflamed and itchy skin. While it was overwhelming at first, it became a powerful opportunity for her to learn about the role of factors that can affect our well-being, including nutrition and lifestyle. Eczema is thought to affect up to 20% of infants, typically appearing from three months on. While for some it can resolve spontaneously, for others it persists and can be the first event in a sequence known as the “allergic march” which includes asthma, allergies and hayfever. Conventional treatments tend to have varying degrees of success in symptom relief, and can even carry significant risks if used long-term such as topical steroids. Maryana shares some strategies that she has successfully incorporated into her program.

Follow the Gut: Our guts are naturally permeable in order to absorb nutrients from our food, however when our intestinal lining is immature or compromised, it’s hypothesised that this can allow large amounts of undigested protein molecules to cross into the bloodstream which alerts our immune system to respond. When this is happening regularly, it’s easy for inflammation to take hold so appropriate allergy testing can help us identify - and temporarily avoid - the root triggers which are usually dietary, but may be environmental or chemical. Support the Skin: I suggest avoiding products with synthetic, drying or petroleum/ alcohol based ingredients, advocating for nourishing products that are easy to absorb and don’t create a vicious cycle, such as emu oil, tallow and shea butter. Love the Liver: Research shows our skin absorbs up to 60% of the chemicals we are exposed to. Low-tox your home to help make it eczema friendly by avoiding harsh soaps, perfumes and scents etc. Laundry detergent

is key, especially as one of the most popular eco/sensitive supermarket options is often a key culprit! Good Bugs: Support a healthy symbiotic colony of bacteria in your digestive tract to help improve digestion, nutrient absorption and immune function through appropriate and safe probiotics as well as fermented foods. Nourish the Body: Focus on traditional nutrient dense foods that are easy to digest. It’s the right time of year for incorporating bone broths, chicken is a family favourite and you’ll find many recipes online, including on my website below. Food is part of the human experience, so make it your friend.
