HIGHFIELD GARDEN RESERVE - DONKEYS WITH A VIEW WORDS

A stunning sea-view property holds one of Algies Bay’s best kept secrets – a special garden for a family of donkeys and their dedicated guardians. And it’s open to the public all year around. Alison and Ted Roberts had been running a flower growing and orchard business on the land for many years and were passionate about their donkeys. In 1985, the land along with its donkeys was gifted to public ownership, for all Kiwis to enjoy. When Ted and Alison passed away it was decided, with the Roberts family’s blessing, to form an incorporated society owned by the community

and run by volunteers. The society currently has 162 members paying $10 each per year. Peter Caccia-Birch is the manager of Highfields Donkeys and leads the team at Highfield Garden Reserve, in partnership with Council. After managing a large hill-country farm in Wellsford, Peter moved to Snells Beach on his retirement.

organises the weekly working bees on Tuesday mornings. He is grateful for the support from volunteers that help care for the donkeys and gardens. “Our groomers are doing a wonderful job, brushing the donkeys and picking out their feet, which is essential for their health.”

“I live right next to Highfield Gardens. I was never one to just sit around and watch TV, so I started helping Alison in the reserve.”

The gardening team is very busy at this time of the year. Council supplies the park with native plants, mulch is donated, and it’s up to the volunteers to plant and maintain the gardens.

Peter visits the donkeys every day, feeding hay through winter, and for the past ten years

All the donkeys are born and bred in the park. They all have names starting with the letter T,

in honour of Ted Roberts. The latest foal, Tilly, was born in January. “We love donkeys because they’ve all got their own cute character. They live for 30-40 years and are very forgiving and easy-care,” says Peter. Whilst the local community often refer to the park as the Donkey Sanctuary, it’s actually not a rescue-facility. “Because the land is open to the public 24/7, unfortunately, we are not able to welcome sick donkeys, or new animals that we don’t know the behaviour of,” says Peter.

The reserve contains several short walking tracks with views of Kawau Bay. The orchard has a large variety of fruit trees, including mandarins, peaches, and an enormous pear tree. Excess fruit is gifted to the local retirement home or back to the community, through the newly set-up free fruit and vegetable stand by the Mahurangi Library. “We encourage children to pick up the windfall apples in the orchard and feed to the donkeys,” Peter says. Highfield Garden Reserve hosts open days twice a

year - one in March and one for Christmas. Santa comes for a few songs and there are donkeyrides and games for children in the orchards, with Council providing a BBQ and other facilities. The public are welcome to visit the donkeys at any time and bring them healthy treats like carrots, silver beet and apples. They also hold a working bee every Tuesday at 9am and are seeking more volunteers to help with donkey grooming, orchard maintenance and in-season planting and pruning. JOLLY HOCKEY STICKS WORDS

“Sport is so good for physical and mental wellbeing, and it’s really important to keep participating,” Maree Todd tells me, with an enthusiastic glint in her eye. Maree’s grass roots hockey began at school and she went on to play for the Teachers Club in Auckland from 1973-76, also playing reps for Auckland under 18s and 21s in this time. Upon returning from her O.E. she came back to play for Warkworth Club in the local competition and represented Rodney for a few games. Her passion for the sport is clear and it’s easy to see how Maree became entrenched in the hockey lifestyle. “We formed the Mahurangi Club and entered the North Harbour Competition about 28 years ago. I played at Premier level and then dropped down the grades as I got older. I

coached for the club and at various times was the president, vice president, secretary and did publicity for the club. Eventually I was made a life member,” she says. “I am the only original member of the Mahurangi Club still playing as I still play Masters for Mahurangi.” Maree became part of the Warkworth Hockey Turf Charitable Trust and is out to recruit more hockey players for the beautiful new turf in Warkworth, women in particular. “The new ground is a wonderful facility, it’s great for the community and hockey will grow here because of it,” says Maree. Warkworth currently offers open competition for women aged 13 and up, and has four women’s teams – but Maree is out to increase that number. “We really want to get women back into the sport.

The teams are all mixed for age and ability, and we play round-robin against each other. It’s a celebration of hockey, but we still play for a cup and we all want it!” she laughs. Hockey can be expensive so keeping it affordable is very important to the Warkworth Club. “We keep the cost as low as possible and make sure we have fun,’” says Maree. “It’s very social and anyone can join in – beginners, those who have played before – it doesn’t matter who you are, just come along and enjoy yourself.” Making it time-friendly is also important to recruiting and keeping members, says Maree. “Young mums who are busy with kids can fit this into their schedule. Have a run around, chat to your friends and still get home without it taking too long.” Maree really is passionate about hockey and

was involved with the Warkworth Hockey Turf Charitable Trust from the beginning. “I’m still on that committee. Luckily, though, some gorgeous, young late-twenties, early-thirties have taken over so I can have a rest. I coached a lot of them when they were younger so it’s great when they step up and take on these responsibilities. I’m very encouraged.” Maree also practises what she preaches. She has played Masters hockey for over 20 years, playing through the 45s, 50s, 55s and 60s grades, and has been in multiple New Zealand teams, including as captain. “At Masters, we’re all very competitive and hate it when we lose, but it’s all good fun afterwards. Masters gives us a place to go when we still want serious competition. It keeps people like me in the sport.”

Maree still trains hard to make the New Zealand Masters’ teams, but travelling to the tournament is a strong part of the appeal for her. “I loooooove travel. Broadens the mind and takes you out of your comfort zone. It keeps you alive and makes you realise how lucky we are in New Zealand. You can’t live without travel, in my opinion.” Attending a World Cup tournament in Barcelona satisfied Maree’s passion for hockey and travel. “That was massive. It was very hot – 40° plus on the turf. We played six games and won a silver medal. We were the only New Zealand team to win a medal. We were world champions two years before that when we beat England in the final in Canberra. It’s great fun to play in those tournaments because you meet people from all over the world.”

Next year is another Masters World Cup, in South Africa this time. “I’m hoping to make it into the team again, as long as the body holds up. It’s about managing the injuries to keep going.” However, there will still be time for some good fun, low stress, everyone-join-in hockey at the Warkworth turf, and Maree would dearly love to see you there. The best way to get involved is to email the club, check out their Facebook page, or just turn up on Monday nights for the ladies’ league or Friday nights for the men’s. The winter competition runs until August, then there’s a short break and, in summer, an eight-a-side competition begins. warkworthhockey@gmail.com www.facebook.com/warkworthhockeyturf

SCISSORS, PAPER, ROCK ‘Scissors, Paper, Rock’ is an art and craft session held every Wednesday after school, starting at 3.15pm. YAKUTIN FAMILY WINES Oleg Yakutin took charge of the vineyard at 646 Matakana Road (part of Hawke’s Nest orchard) back in 2017, harvesting grapes in 2018 and now releasing these 2018 vintage wines. “Based on Old World traditions, we aim to produce distinctive wines of Matakana, as we believe that wine is a true reflection of land, people and time.” They are currently growing three varieties of grape: Chardonnay, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, with plans to plant more vines and introduce new varieties from this year onwards. “At the moment we are working on a Rosé and two Reserve wines to be released in 2020." The ‘Tamgaly Series’ is a tribute to the great history and traditions of Oleg’s fatherland - Kazakhstan, and their range is currently available from Heron’s Flight’s cellar door, the Vintry and other local outlets. www.instagram.com/yakutinwines www.facebook.com/Yakutin-Family-Wines-1830657263702547

SUN, SURF - AND BAMMAS WORDS KATHY

David Glover and partner Mariska moved to Mangawhai in 2007, with the intention of raising their daughter Mariska in a small seaside community. “Few opportunities for employment were available, so when Bammas Surf shop came onto the market for the first time in 30 years we jumped at the opportunity,” remembers Dave. They certainly haven’t regretted it. “We like to think of our little shop as a local hub,” Dave says. “All the Bammas staff are very much engaged in various aspects of the community we love so much, and our business philosophy of conscious community focus enables us to put a lot of aroha into it. There are very few local activities that haven’t had support from us, and we’re extremely proud of that.”

As a local independent store, Bammas operates in a marketplace increasingly dominated by enormous online retailers, so they’ve had to figure out how to encourage people to shop local. “We know we have no way of going to head to head with the big boys,” Dave admits. “Instead we focus on what we can do within our own market space. Because of this we’re quite nimble and can shift our buying patterns quickly to reflect local market trends. And knowing our customers and community well helps us stock brands that we know will work.” For well over a decade, Bammas has stocked the coolest beach gear alongside surfing hardware and sporting equipment. But they’re well aware that keeping their business up to date and

relevant means continuous evolution of their brand and what they offer. “We are a seasonal business that’s heavily reliant on a long hot summer, so if it rains through a large part of that we’re at the doctors getting stress pills for sure!” Dave laughs. Thankfully the 2019 summer season was fantastic, so no such trips were in order. And as the Mangawhai community continues to grow, Bammas is seeing a slow but steady trend upwards over winter as well. An important part of the company philosophy is their involvement in ‘Plastic Free Mangawhai’, a Facebook-run group whose goal is to eliminate single-use plastics in the area. In line with this, Bammas has removed all plastic from their retail

But when it comes down to it, says Dave, the most important part of the business is the closeknit group of Bammas staff and the fantastic Mangawhai community. “All our staff are locals. JUNCTION AWARDS RUNNER UP

BREWING UP A STORM WORDS

In the beginning, the Sawmill Brewery had a simple goal: to make excellent beers which their customers could enjoy in the best possible way. But now they’ve broadened their outlook enormously and the team is fully committed to building “a strong business that’s good for our team, our community and our environment.” With three young boys themselves, owners Mike Sutherland and Kirsty McKay are keen to keep things environmentally friendly. The brewery has a zero-waste goal and a massive solar set-up – the biggest in use by a brewery in NZ. “We also recycle all our soft plastics within New Zealand, get all our water from our site in Matakana (via rainwater collection plus spring water) and we use all our grey water as irrigation on the farm,” says Kirsty. “All the spent grain and kitchen waste goes to local cattle and pigs and any remaining food waste is composted.” She reckons the biggest impact on the business this year was becoming New Zealand’s first B-Corporation certified brewery. They joined just 22 other New Zealand businesses in meeting the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. “B-Corp certification is tough to achieve, but it gives us a framework to

measure our progress and empowers our entire team to work towards being a better business,” says Kirsty. So why does she think they got their votes? “Well, we’re really conscious of looking after the people we live and work with. We celebrate local and seasonal produce, we buy local wherever possible and we love supporting our community.” Building the Sawmill Brewery was a team process from the very beginning and over the past few years the Brewery has collaborated with guest chefs, with artists and with other brewers as well, to keep things fresh, creative and progressive. Throughout the year there are special events, dinners and workshops to be part of, with the next one on 26 July: three chefs will offer a five course meal with optional beer-matching – three courses will come from a hangi in the courtyard. Stay up to date via the brewery events page.

SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS FOR MANGAWHAI HONEY WORDS KIRSTY

Winning the inaugural Junction and One Oh Nine Start-up competition is a proud moment for this boutique business and the beekeeper behind it. Founder, Louis Smith formed Mangawhai Honey in 2015 from a coastal and country backdrop in Mangawhai. His family have trodden lightly on the land since 1947, enjoying a rustic setting of native bush, the estuary edge, a family-run sawmill and these days - a bunch of hardworking hives. Working on the land has meant less time to build his new business. It’s not Louis' passion to sit at a desk, particularly when there’s an outside job to sort, bees to feed, or a wave to catch. So when this competition caught his eye, he was keen to enter. Part of the catalyst was the generous package offered, but he also knew the business coaching and brand exposure would be a valuable tool for him to tap into. Competition authors, Junction Magazine and One Oh Nine, were looking to reward a startup who was having a positive impact on the

community, who sought innovation, and would put the resources offered to good use. For One Oh Nine co-founder, Carol Brown, it was Mangawhai Honey’s creativity and growth potential that particularly intrigued her and fellow judges, “Mangawhai Honey were a little out of the ordinary, doing exciting things with their business while acting in a sustainable and humble manner.” “Louis has created a premium product by caring for his craft and the environment. Minimal hives are found on each block of land, allowing space for his bees to thrive. Honey is sold in glass jars rather than plastic, and every spring he replants Mānuka, Kānuka, Harakeke and Tī Kouka on his land. Customers love his honey and we saw plenty of scope for growth, while still appreciating his boutique, ‘non-commercial’ philosophies.” Junction and One Oh Nine Start-up competition is all about ‘small business supporting small business’, and Mangawhai Honey has been awarded a generous prize including a six-month

CREATIVE

advertising campaign in Junction Magazine, a Microsoft Surface tablet, business coaching sessions - LinkedIn Learning online education, a marketing plan and social media support. Louis is already capitalising on the win, “The coaching has been really good, I’ve enjoyed it – it’s been great to get what’s in my head out and get a clear plan for ‘where to next’. Thanks to Junction and One Oh Nine for making this competition possible. I was stoked to win, especially against a talented pool of local businesses. The advertising in Junction is great, it’s working well having my brand showcased in a magazine where readers appreciate (and support) small biz,” he shares.

MANAGING STRESS AND ANXIETY

Psychologist Laura McAlpine has been working in private practice in the Warkworth area and this year will see her launch a series of stress and anxiety management groups for the general public. Her love of working with people attracted her to psychology but it was when she stumbled across Health Psychology she knew she had found her calling. “I’m really passionate about helping people adjust to and transition through the many challenges that come with living with a chronic health condition.” Laura has worked in a range of different settings both in New Zealand and Australia but was always drawn to the field of chronic pain. “This work can be so varied and interesting as pain has the potential to influence every little aspect of a person’s life. In pain work, I’m routinely dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma… the list goes on.” A lot of Laura’s work involves helping people to understand the role that the central nervous

MR GRIND ESPRESSO WARKWORTH Sally Peters took a chance last year on a tiny triangle shop (2 Wharf Street) on the main strip in Warkworth. system plays in both pain and psychological distress. “When we can grasp how the central nervous system responds to stress and the reactions this creates in the body and mind, and have the tools to regulate these reactions, then we are better armed to manage life’s inevitable ups and downs.” Laura’s new groups aim to support people to develop some very simple tools that can regulate an overactive central nervous system. “It’s about gaining the knowledge and awareness of how our bodies respond to stress. That self-awareness gives us a platform from which we can then make a choice about what to do next. We become less reactive and less pushed and pulled around by unpleasant internal experiences, such as upsetting thoughts and beliefs, intense emotions and overwhelming physical symptoms.” Laura describes a lot of joy working with individuals in her private practice but is excited to embark on group work at the community level.

“Hopefully I can do my small part to support better mental wellness in our little corner of the country.” Top tips for coping with stress and anxiety - Invest some time into learning diaphragmatic breathing correctly. - Make time every day to practice some form of breathing, mindfulness or stillness. - Invest in a good app to support your practice (there are some great free ones out there too). - Be kind to yourself, we all struggle with life’s challenges and mood difficulties at times - take one small step forward each day and celebrate that progress. - Find someone you trust to talk to, whether that be family, friends or a professional. The power of human connection can be so healing. lauramcalpinepsychologist@gmail.com 020 4160 8321

THE NETWORKER

When a friend talked to her about network marketing in 2003, Helen Jamieson was absolutely set against it. “I’d seen my parents try it when I was very young. I thought it was all shoulder pads and high heels, and I was certain it didn’t work.” Fast forward a few years and Helen had earned more than a million USD in network marketing – and spent most of it.

But Sally’s hopes are crushed as she struggles to fit her business around her demanding boss, her husband’s shift work and her kids’ needs. Her friends laugh at her about network marketing and, as she fights to find the time, energy and money her business needs... she decides to quit.

them to quit might not be their best expert. A lot of business books are quite dry and factual, they don’t capture the feelings you experience as you’re trying to build your team. I love that one reader said that The Networker is so good you wouldn’t know you’re working!” Readers have called the book: ‘heart-warming’, ‘inspiring’, ‘so real!’ and ‘life changing’.

“I did a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong!” she laughs, “I wrote ‘The Networker’ to pass on some of those lessons.”

“People really believe those who succeed in network marketing have special bullets!” laughs Helen. “They don’t understand that anyone who succeeds in business has tough times. They can’t imagine anyone understands their pain.”

In 2009 Helen moved to Matakana with her husband and two daughters. When her mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer that same year, she encouraged Helen to do something with her ability as a writer.

It’s a familiar story. As a network marketing business builds momentum things can start to feel like they’re going wrong, especially if there’s a negative spouse in the picture or money and time were tight to start with.

“The Networker is a story about a wonderfully feisty woman called Sally McAllister – but picture Erin Brockovich!” grins Helen. “Sally’s working a job she hates, and she’s lurched into network marketing to try and get her freedom back.”

“I’d see great team members get de-railed by their uncle’s cousin’s sister telling them network marketing doesn’t work,” says Helen, “when all they needed was a reframe - someone to point out that the broke, unambitious person telling

“I get teary hearing from readers around the world,” smiles Helen. “It’s dedicated to mum and my goal is to reach a million readers - women who’d otherwise quit, when actually they’re so close to achieving their dreams. “Enjoying the process is so important when you’re building a business. Those women just need a nudge to see things differently and then everything can change.”

HALCYON DESIGN maintained a niche by offering expert design, writing and illustration – the illustration being the wonderful work of their eldest brother Fraser (www.redshark.co.nz). The Williamson brothers have all come through publishing backgrounds and have worked on many books, ranging from surf and travel, to Matthew and Fraser’s latest series of Māori/English board books for children, now in its fourth series. “We have discovered that, apart from providing all the general services clients require, our job is more importantly about providing solutions to their problems, making their business lives easier and achieving the results they require,” says Luke. “That’s probably why we have clients who have stuck with us for so long – we grow to understand their business and work hard alongside them to make it the best it can be.” “Constant evolution has been necessary in our business, but one thing that never changes is the need for great business relationships.” Brothers Matthew and Luke Williamson still have customers and suppliers from when they began Halcyon Design back in 1991. “In those days, we stuck artwork together by hand, fax machines were new, desktop Macintosh computers were rare and very expensive, and there was no such thing as ‘the internet’,” says Luke. KIWINESS TOURS

Kiwiness Tours is a locally run company founded by Vanessa (Ness) Wards, a born and bred Matakana local with big ideas for tours around her beloved home region. Ness has recently returned to the area along with her partner, Brendon and fur baby Joey, the Kelpie (yes the tour van is named after the dog)! Ness has relocated the company from Queenstown, where she was based for the last few years, now specialising in Matakana Coast tours, Auckland day tours and private New Zealand wide guiding and itinerary design. From evening Kiwi sanctuary tours at Tawharanui, to wine and beer tasting tours, Ness believes that the true way to experience a place is with a local. These local services include set itinerary day tours following the Matakana Wine Trail, craft beer tasting, scenic day tours, beach visits, art and sculpture trails, as well as any kind of customised transport and special occasion tours required. "Matakana is definitely on the map for places to visit in New Zealand, so I think it was a

natural progression to move my business from Queenstown (the Tourism Mecca) and transition it into an area with so much population growth as well as tourism potential.” For Ness it was a no brainer - being able to use the skills she had acquired guiding in the South Island, alongside her passion for the outdoors, people, good food, wine and craft beer, and team up with the resources and amazing businesses on offer up here in the North. “Gaining concession to take small group tours into Tawharanui Open Sanctuary has been a surprising hit! I started it as an Airbnb experience, and soon realised that whether its international tourists or locals, we have the chance to listen and maybe even sight our national bird in a wild habitat just one hour from Auckland City! It’s absolutely incredible, and something I am very passionate to share,” she tells us. With the craft beer scene exploding in New Zealand in the last decade, it is truly a proud time to have so many quality brews coming out,

especially from the local region. Kiwiness Tours offers the first of its kind in specific craft beer tasting tours in the area. 'The Beer Swagger' is a full day tour showcasing award winning breweries such as Deep Creek, 8 Wired and Sawmill Brewing. A typical tour includes tasting paddles, informative behind the scenes access and a fun day out amongst craft beer connoisseurs. All this, while in the safe hands of your professional driver guide. For those on the fence with beer, or have both wine and beer lovers in their group; how about the 'Beer n Wine Mixer'. This tour is all-inclusive providing local tasting stops at a chocolate boutique, winery, craft brewery and even gourmet pizza at the locals’ favourite eatery. With a late afternoon departure, it’s perfect for those staff incentives, team bonding or after work get togethers!

SAVOUR

THE ONE AND ONLY Tahi Bar is one of Warkworth’s hidden gems - located down an alleyway just off the main street, those with an appreciation for excellent beer and a relaxed place to enjoy it will be pleased to find themselves here. Born in 2008 of a passion for New Zealand craft beer, it has recently changed hands to a couple equally as passionate, and then some. This quirky little bar is where it all began for new owners and couple Gareth Hedges and Rachel Cooney - it’s where they first met and fell in love, fitting then that today they are its keepers, the bar an extension of their keen, creative energies. Gareth Hedges, a mechanic by trade and a musician by night, until recently was the manager at Cameron Auto Services in Warkworth; his band Love Spud recently reached number six on New Zealand album charts. Gareth’s favourite local spot for after-work drinks was the Tahi Bar. “I loved the place, the great craft beers, great conversations and great company,” Gareth enthuses. Back in 2015, he and a bunch of creative mates refurbished the bar, creating a cool steampunk look. Rachel Cooney is an artist - two of her paintings were among the finalists of the Adam Foundation NZ Portrait Award and were exhibited in the NZ National Portrait Gallery. Cooney managed an art gallery on the Lower East Side of New York for many years; when the gallery was closed, she bartended at a tiny French restaurant around the corner. ‘2014 saw Rachel move back home to New Zealand and it was while bartending at Tahi Bar that she and Gareth met. “As a couple, we’d sit at the Tahi daydreaming, chatting about what we’d do if we owned the place. Give it a lick of paint, put some good art on the walls. Live music, a bigger, better wine selection. Get the kitchen back up and running with a really good chef in. But keep the craft beers - the craft beers have always been wonderful here. We always thought we were daydreaming, until one day, we weren’t!” Tahi Bar has since been revamped and refurbished, with the first few months being “intense but wonderful”. Original artworks by Rachel and beautiful paintings of native birds by local artist Cherith Curtis adorn the walls, while guitars, bases, mandolins and banjo-ukeleles decorate the rooms, including The Exponents’ Brian Jones’ electric slide guitar that he made from a mini beer keg with Jordan Luck’s piano-accordion sitting alongside. Tim Higgins, of the famous Gourmet Burger Company, is the bar’s excellent new chef “cranking out some of the most divine food you’ve ever tasted,” while Rachel has put together a terrific wine list to run alongside the already fantastic craft beer options. The house wines are better, but the prices the same at just $9 per glass.

SANDSPIT ROAD VILLA

After years of doing long distance between Raglan and Auckland, Imogen and Will Worsp were trying to decide where to settle and start a family. Will was adamant he wasn’t going to live in Auckland full time, and Imogen didn’t want to completely give up her career with a move to Raglan. They had spent many weekends at the Matakana markets, exploring the local beaches and drinking local drops at the breweries and wineries so understandably had fallen in love with the area. They were also drawn to the growing community of creatives and artisans in the area.

Assuming it would be out of their budget and their minds in ‘do-up mode’ they openly admitted to the real estate agents that they were just admirers.

“Matakana was far enough out of the city yet was also close enough for me to commute for work and close enough for Will’s client meetings and deliveries…” explained Imogen, who had worked at Air New Zealand as a Design and Customer Experience Manager before moving to Foodstuffs NZ as Head of Brand and Creative.

Whilst wanting to retain the character of the house, they also wanted to make it their own with a slight contemporary twist by including Will’s furniture, art and photography from their trips around Europe. Will got stuck into the landscaping, manicuring the paddocks on his trusty John Deere, building a new vege garden and plantings around the pool, as well as painting the roof in Dulux’s ‘Federation Grey’. To ensure it was cosy for their first winter and in time for the arrival of their first baby in July last year, they added insulation, and painted the bedrooms in ‘Half Washed Green’ and ‘Half Robin Egg Blue’,

They spent a year trying to find the ideal property with a workshop and/or showroom space that Will could run his business from. Will is the founder of WRW & Co Furniture Design. It was on their way back from viewing a do-up they decided to swing by “…the amazing villa with the green roof.”

“We fell in love with the character of the place and were intrigued by the fact it was relocated from Remuera 20 years earlier…” explains Will. “It was positioned perfectly on the three acre site to get all day sun and had a tranquil outlook over the pond and paddocks which could never be interrupted.” The location ended up being ideal, within minutes of the local township yet so handy to the motorway for the commuting days.

before putting Cavalier Bremworth wool carpet in the bedrooms. Meanwhile, Artisan Electrical changed out the old chandeliers for more contemporary light fittings. The property is filled with pockets of treasure. From the Air BNB semi detached studio with an ensuite, to the pond with its with dreamy walkway and at the back of the house is the pool! “The pool house is ideal to read a book and is one of the best spots to sleep as it’s first to get the sun!” Imogen tells, and they plan to turn this into an art studio when it is not used for the overflow of guests. At the end of last year, they did unexpectedly find another property from which Will could run part of his business (which is still their ultimate goal) but it was not to be, so they now get to enjoy filling this gorgeous family home with Will’s custom-made pieces of furniture and the fruits of their new vege garden, eggs from their chickens and the two organic lambs which help Will with the lawns…and filling the freezer. GIVE A KID A BLANKET ‘Give a Kid a Blanket’ is a community activated action of kindness lead by Bernie Harfleet and Donna Turtle Sarten, two artists well known for their social political art practise. In the winter of 2015 Bernie and Donna decided, as part of their art practise, to collect blankets for six weeks and then, through health workers, distribute them to those in need. This was in direct response to the coroner sighting cold and damp housing conditions as contributing to the death of a toddler. A dedicated Facebook page was set up to promote the project and interest grew quickly. 26 people and businesses across the wider Auckland area, from Whangaparoa to Franklin and everywhere between, offered to be drop off points for blankets in their area. At the end of the six weeks 1273 blankets had been distributed. From this first winter the project has grown from strength to strength. A community of kindness has formed around it, and each winter more and more blankets and other warm items are donated and then gifted to those in need. In the winter of 2018 ‘Give a Kid a Blanket’ gifted 17,500 blankets to kids and their families along with over 5000 other items of warmth. In total over the last four

winters more than 30,000 blankets have been distributed. The project is back for its fifth winter and collects blankets and other items of warmth from 1 June until 21 July. This year there are 72 drop off points, with local collections in Warkworth, Snells Beach and out at the Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Rooms. The Facebook page remains the main platform for the project, now with over 8,000 followers. “Rather than focus on the blanket recipients, which can be victimising,” says Bernie, “We highlight the acts kindness so many are able to make, and celebrate the work of health and social workers”. “We want those receiving items to feel not only warm, but valued by the community,” says Donna. “With this in mind we only want donations that are in excellent pre-loved condition or new.” Items wanted include: blankets, duvets, sleeping bags, beanies, socks, coats, jumpers, baby cloths, new pillows, new hot water bottles. The other way to support the organisation is through its ‘Givealittle’ page. www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ give-a-kid-a-blanket-2019

ART

THEY’RE NOT COWS WORDS

“I’ve never painted a cow in my life,” says Mike Petre, a little tartly. “They’re cattle!” But then he laughs. “Everyone calls them cows of course, but I paint cattle beasts because beef is what I know – not dairy cows. To me they’re very different.” Mike’s been painting them for over 20 years now, and his upcoming solo exhibition at Milford Galleries in Queenstown is eagerly anticipated. “I truly never get sick of painting them,” he says thoughtfully. “Yes, there’s an ease in it, almost like a muscle memory – I know the forms so well because I’ve spent so much time assessing weight and condition. But there are always new techniques which are fun for me. This time I’ve started working with hairdryers and moving the ink uphill…” Unusually, Mike uses only black ink, thinning it with water to grade the jet black into all shades of grey in a similar process to watercolour. “It’s pretty exciting because you only get a few seconds to complete any part before it dries. If you screw up, it’s all over. But it just kind of emerges from the canvas; it’s almost like working

in a darkroom and seeing the image appear almost magically, like a photograph.” The beasts are close up because that’s how Mike has always worked with cattle. That bolshie, good-humoured curiosity of a mob of beasts is what he likes – the way they muscle in and check you out. Are you the viewer or the viewed? “In the middle of a herd, the landscape disappears and they become amorphic shapes… it’s only the light and shadow that creates the form,” he says. Another common question: why do the legs dribble away into nothing? “Because their hooves are usually hidden in grass – often wet. Anyway, I’m only interested in the beef!” Mike’s from Piopio in the Waikato, where his family still has 1300 acres of sheep and cattle farm. He loves the animals, the environment and particularly the architecture of farms. The natural direction for young Mike was a degree in agriculture. However, it doesn’t take long to realise that everything this deceptively laid-back bloke looks at is being assessed with the beady eye of the

This is why, after a few years of travel, he came back to New Zealand and did another degree – this time in design. Anyone who has worked with Mike will tell you that he goes to sometimes incredible lengths to ensure that everything he makes is simple and authentic – and then give it some extra handcrafted twist that makes it extraordinary. The buildings he’s designed – the Vivian Gallery, the Sawmill Brewery, various local homes – are full of these touches. Mike’s fledgling architectural business, Small Space, created with the equally brilliant craftsman Mark Lever, promises more of the same. But for now, it’s all about the shoulders, rumps and briskets of his cattle. Look out Otago, here they come. Exhibition 22 June – 30 July Small Space Ltd: 021 747 102 www.milfordgalleries.co.nz

HAPPENINGS

OYSTER LOVERS AHOY! It’s time to lock in 6 October for the most delectable, decadent day on the local calendar: the Oyster Festival Matakana. This is the third year of this gourmet event which showcases oysters from the Mahurangi – the plumpest, creamiest stars of our harbour. There’ll be a few changes this year, but the family fun, entertainment and competitions will stay the same. One major change is the venue; this year’s festival will go back to its roots as a celebration of local oysters and the Matakana region on the water’s edge of the gorgeous Omaha estuary. Another major change is the entry price, which will be substantially lower in 2019 and will include your festival glass and all-day entry to the seaside festivities of acoustic music, live demonstrations and masterclasses. Obviously, there’ll be oysters: au naturel by the plate-load, but local gourmet establishments will be bringing you their take on oyster recipes to try as well. For those who are not fans of ‘vitamin sea’ don’t worry – you will not go hungry. We’ve sourced the best the Matakana region has to offer for you to taste and meet the people behind the brands. Finally, they’re ensuring that getting here will be a breeze with return buses running from the city, North Shore and Silverdale, at $28 return. Transport from Mangawhai, Warkworth and Omaha will also be available, see the website for more details.

Early bird tickets: $29.50 VIP tickets: $64.50 Adult GA tickets: $34.50

The oysters will be at their best for the festival even if the weather isn’t. This is an all-weather event – it’ll go ahead rain or shine, so leave the heels at home and make sure you glam up your gumboots for this one.

Children (10-17 yrs old) tickets: $10.50

Grab your ticket to discovering the bounty of the Matakana Region, and all it has to offer. Early bird tickets are on sale now, until the end of July for only $29.50.

NADIA REID TO PLAY LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE WORDS

ZOE

GIMRING

For the past while, award-winning New Zealand singer-songwriter Nadia Reid has been busy recording and putting the final touches on her muchanticipated third album. Her two albums, ‘Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs’ (2015), and latest, ‘Preservation’ (2017), have received wide acclaim both at home in New Zealand and internationally. Dunedin-born, Nadia has travelled the world and performed along the way - presenting at some of the world’s greatest music platforms such as New Zealand’s WOMAD, The Green Man Festival, End Of The Road Festival (both in the UK) and a television appearance on BBC's 'Later...with Jools Holland'. An artist of integrity, which is heard evidently through her music, Reid is celebrated for her distinctive voice and intimate musical soundscape. “My music is folk at its core, but I don’t really like that word, I don’t know genrewise,” she says. No wonder; this young artist is creating something new, a sound and a feeling unique to her - drawn from the heart and exuding a wisdom beyond her years. Nadia Reid is self-assured and gracious to speak with. On how she feels sharing her music with the world, she says, “It makes me feel what a privilege it is to grow in front of people - from the first album to the one I’ve just made. In terms of how personal my music is - I just don’t think about it.” There’s a gentle smile in her voice as she says, “but it’s all only a positive; it makes me a better person.” “I can’t help it (making music). I reckon it’s a compulsion - I’m gonna do it anyway. I love that I get to do something as a job that makes me happy most of the time. I love playing, and being on the road…meeting and connecting with people.” Reid is about to tour New Zealand and Australia before heading off to the UK with her recently-wed Kiwi husband. Her tour will include a performance at our very own Leigh Sawmill Cafe on 20 July. “I’ve been before," she says, of the Sawmill Cafe, "Attending gigs and performing as

a support act, but this will be my first time as a headliner,” she enthuses. Showgoers can look forward to hearing songs from her albums, “as well as some new stuff, joined by my band made up of Sam Taylor, Chris O'Connor, Richie Pickard and a new female band member which is exciting - Anita Clark, singing and playing violin, who is also ‘Motte’, the supporting show for the evening.” Head to the Leigh Sawmill for an evening of mellow, intimate, soulful sounds from one of New Zealand’s oh-so-talented artists. www.nadiareid.com
