Dr Travis Badenhorst

There are many ‘natural’ skincare companies in the world, but surprisingly, there are just a handful that grow their own ingredients, and even fewer who apply biodiscovery to discover new-tothe-world ingredients. One of those is Snowberry, and the ‘Snowberry Gardens’ are located close to Matakana. Dr Travis Badenhorst, President of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Chemists and Scientist at Snowberry skin care says, “One of the most exciting parts of what Snowberry does is biodiscovery. And biodiscovery is much more than simply growing some ingredients. Pretty much anyone can do that – though very few do. Biodiscovery is original skin science based on native plants, as well as the extracts we can obtain from naturals like kanuka honey.”

Snowberry’s biodiscovery plantation, popularly called the Snowberry Gardens, is idyllically pretty, and that’s reason enough to love it. But says Dr Badenhorst, “nearly eleven years ago, we began planting native plants from the New Zealand rainforest. Now, we have over 8,000 plants of selected varieties. It’s gorgeous and a haven for native birds and people! But most importantly, these plants were selected for very special qualities. We looked at traditional Rongoā Māori, or medicine, and then we considered the research done by various scientific institutes in the past one hundred years. This enabled us to narrow the number of plants to a manageable few.” ‘Natural’ skin care has become one of the goto’s for many women who are seeking safe and authentic skin care. But studies show that most

of us also want to know that natural skin care really works. And there are many reasons to be uncertain. Which is why, ‘Nature & Science’ has become a catch-cry. “The problem,” says Dr Badenhorst, “is that biodiscovery is such a research-intensive and long-term venture, hardly anyone does it. Snowberry decided 12 years ago that simply natural skin care was not good enough, and that led to the Snowberry Gardens. In addition to the plants, we have some of the most sophisticated equipment for identifying potentially very valuable skin renewal compounds that won’t be found anywhere else. And right now, for example, we produce the most superb harakeke seed oil which is in our day and night creams, and of course the beautiful Renew Body Oil.”

Kanuka Blossoms

Most recently, and cause for great excitement, is Snowberry’s development of a highly skinbeneficial extract from the kanuka honey produced in the Gardens. Dr Badenhorst says, “Kanuka honey is a wonderful anti-ageing ingredient because it contains very special compounds called arabinogalactans (AGPs); and Kanuka has the highest AGP content of any New Zealand honey – including Manuka honey. AGP is important because it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and what we see every day, is that persistent inflammation from conditions such as acne and eczema is

exceedingly detrimental to radiant skin. The problem with all honeys, is that they are sticky, and the conventional way of eliminating the stickiness, can alter the active ingredient so that it is rendered largely ineffective. We’ve now solved that problem.” Snowberry’s New Radiance Face Serum with CuPEP™ is treasured by many New Zealand women. Now though, the Serum’s gold-standard proven formulation, has been enhanced with high-performance AGP from the kanuka honey harvested in the Snowberry Gardens. And for more radiant skin, that’s a breakthrough! It is

why, says Snowberry Founder Soraya Hendesi, Snowberry’s mantra is ‘Made by Nature, boosted by Science'. “Our mission,” says Soraya, “is to use biodiscovery to create skin care that can be proven to reveal more radiant skin, and to help avoid the premature ageing of skin, at any age.” Snowberry products are available from Franklin’s Life Pharmacy in Warkworth, Wellsford Pharmacy and Mangawhai Pharmacy.

PROFILE

STUART DEVENIE

'A Week of It'

“Possessed of a marvellous voice, a fierce intelligence and a wonderfully dry humour, is how the Artistic Director of the Auckland Theatre Company, Colin McColl describes Stuart Devenie, this year’s Artistic Director of the Waipu Museum Art’nTartan Wearable Art Awards Contest and Show. The acquisition of Stuart is a major triumph for the museum for this, it’s ninth annual contest.

directing in film and television but also as a senior tutor at Toi Whakaari/New Zealand Drama School. He has performed the lead in many Auckland Theatre Company productions, television dramas and movies too numerous to mention. Stuart is also one of New Zealand’s top voice-over artists with many lead roles in radio dramas and the voice of many New Zealand top-brand campaigns.

Stuart, well known as one of Aotearoa’s finest actors, directors and drama tutors, is quite happy to admit that the role which set him on the road to a theatrical career was his first appearance as Mr Dungbeetle in ‘The Insect Play’ at age twelve in a Hastings Junior Theatre production. From such humble beginnings his illustrious career spans four and a half decades of involvement with the performing arts, not only in the form of acting and

Stuart was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to entertainment in 2008 and the following year he was endowed as a New Zealand Arts Foundation Arts Laureate. Stuart and his family now live in Northland. His daughter, Laurel, has followed in her father’s footsteps and can currently be seen in as nurse Kate Nathan in Shortland Street. She says of her father, “He loves working. He believes in the storytelling. He's

8

worked in community environments all over the country. Fame and fortune hasn't been his driving force. Stuart’s foray into the world of wearable art is a first for him and it is his affection for Northland and Waipu in particular that has led him to the Waipu Museum and Art’nTartan. When asked what this new role means to him Stuart says, “I am very excited to have been invited to direct the ninth annual Waipu Museum Art’nTartan presentation. He says he sees it as a great opportunity to work with local volunteers who have built, over the past decade, such a high quality regional and national event. Stuart is already becoming an even more familiar face in and around the wee Scottish town as he prepares for his involvement in this year’s show

in the Celtic Barn this coming July. The show is the culmination of the annual tartan celebrations which sees a whole raft of events in the town. One of Stuart’s overriding wish is for Art’nTartan to continue to celebrate the heritage of Waipu and its link, not only with it’s Celtic and multicultural past, but its hope for the future. The compulsory inclusion of tartan in all costumes is the contest’s point of difference with other wearable art shows around the country. This year, contestants have been given complete freedom to create their designs and audiences will be wowed by the audacity and creativity of the artists. Stuart will be joined by new Production Manager Claire Drake, and the rest of the Art’nTartan organising team are hugely excited and honoured to be working with them both. Stuart wants to preserve much of the traditional built up with the past productions, while at the same time adding new elements to refresh the presentation. Entries are already in and the noholds-barred brief given to designers promises to captivate the audience. Stuart’s maxim is “to delight, surprise and entertain…” and it is to this end that he plans a few enhancements to what has been an extremely successful format in the past. He is introducing a new stage layout and lighting effects and plans to showcase to full advantage the wearable artworks.

TRADE MARK EMBROIDERY & PRINT

FLYING BIRDS WINES TAPSTER CELLARS

Toni and Simon Read took reign of Trade Mark Embroidery & Print in July 2018; in search of a better work-life balance, they moved their young family from Titirangi in Auckland’s West to be closer to family spread between Warkworth and Mangawhai. Toni and Simon love the sense of community here and are big on locals supporting locals. Having recently relocated to the old barn on the corner of Anderson and Matakana Roads, Trade Mark Embroidery & Print continues to offer the same great service where no client is too big or small.

Introducing Flying Birds Wines, their name reflects their ethos - to be free to gather the finest ingredients around New Zealand. Flying Birds Wines source their grapes and wines from the best regions throughout New Zealand, they then combine these with first-rate production methods in order to create their wine varieties which are of the highest quality.

DESIGN

HOMAGE TO THE PAST CREATES HEIRLOOM FOR THE FUTURE WORDS

Wāpu Gables, the luxurious coast-meets-rustic/ industrial themed three-bedroom home on the edge of the Mangawhai Estuary that featured recently on Grand Designs, proves elusive to spot from a distance. When it appeared as a super-scaled media star on TV, with its huge exposed and reclaimed wooden trusses in the Great Room living area and courtyard, you’d think this addition to Back Bay estate would say ‘Here I am!’. It didn’t though and that’s the highest praise you can give the design team including the owners – that Wāpu Gables, on land measuring 3139sqm and house 325sqm, sits sensitively within the landscape. The synergy that owners Patty and Geoff Coley enjoyed with architectural designer Frank Stanton from Dream Planning and builder Nick Smith from Smith Construction, has resulted in a beautiful thing and a home Nick describes as ‘heirloom’. The Coleys admired this site for years before buying it in 2012. They holidayed across the estuary and when kayaking around the bay often tied up to its jetty wharf and imagined living here, and following a thorough, thoughtful planning and build process that has taken just under five years, the family moved in last May.

EXTANCE

The jetty wharf (wāpu in Maori) informed the name of the home and the design was inspired by the lines of a boatshed. Four side-by-side gable pitch roof pavilions are linked by a network of steel structures that support the reclaimed materials, and two external steel portal frames anchor the design, with one at the entrance and one framing the magnificent estuary view. The home’s visual theme was decided by the materials selected by Geoff and Patty. Wanting a special place, it was a chance introduction to a demolition and recycled materials specialist, Mike Uttinger, that truly sealed the home’s uniqueness. The 100-year-old reclaimed trusses were part of an old ferry wharf; the old steel metal plates with their pitted, weathered effects came from cyanide holding tanks and bind the trusses and feature in bespoke furniture pieces; the bricks are pre-World War II and the recycled rimu internal cladding also came from 100-year-old buildings. The Great Room wall height measuring 2.9m with trusses above could have felt imposing but simply inspires. Owning a hospitality hire business,- the Coleys understand what makes entertaining spaces work and Patty’s flair has ensured sublime interior design throughout. Patty and Geoff basically knew the form their

home would take - plenty of house and plenty of outside space for adults and extended family to live and play. The best of projects have constraints and Frank says designing and achieving the form of building the Coleys dreamt of in the space available was the perfect challenge. “Building restriction controls really narrowed the site, the water table level directly below only just allowed buried water tanks to fit, and working with irregularities and imperfections of recycled materials is always testing.” “The design came down to the inch and we’re extremely happy with the result,” says Frank. “Capturing that view while forming beautiful living environments and experiences with easy flow between spaces inside and out was essential.” For Patty and Geoff, it’s the reclaimed rafters and how all the recycled materials blend, that gives them the most pleasure. “Everything here has a story, has a history, and that’s what makes it so special.”

THE HOUSE COMPANY CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS

Hamish McArthur and his team are celebrating 30 years in business and would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community, clients, trades and suppliers for their loyalty and support. The House Company was established in 1989, initially building log cabins, but over the years it evolved and progressed, and now creates custom, architecturally designed homes, and has become a well-known and respected local design and build company. Their success is maintained through consistently producing a quality product and having knowledgeable and experienced staff, trades and loyal suppliers as assets and valued extended team members. A testament to this is that a high percentage of their projects are through referrals from satisfied clients. The company stays up to date with the latest changes in building codes and new products and technologies available to the industry, without

compromising on quality, to remain relevant and competitive. Recognised as specialists in designing and building alternative structures, such as off-grid and self-sufficient homes, The House Company is committed to sustainable building practices, and has solid experience in non-toxic building projects. With a reputation for competence in building on challenging sites, including steep or awkward slopes, tricky terrain and restricted access sites, the company unfailingly delivers efficient and cost-effective solutions. Successfully positioned between a group housing company and an architectural firm, they have been a consistent gold winner in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, achieving gold in several categories over the years. The House Company currently builds from Auckland’s North Shore to Langs Beach and has

recently opened a new show home in Warkworth. The brief for this display home was to provide a smaller, economic, low-maintenance home for people downsizing, or starting out. They have succeeded in creating a smaller, contemporary three bedroom designer home that ticks all the boxes. A distinct feature and advantage of the design is that the home can be pre-built off-site and shipped to distant locations or built locally. There are many options to explore. The team invites you to come along and have a look at this stunning new home and see what they can create for you. Open 11am to 2pm, Wednesday to Saturday or by appointment, located on the corner of Woodcocks Road and State Highway One.

MASTER CRAFTSMEN

TOUCHSTONE MARBLE AND GRANITE WORDS REBECKA

Touchstone Marble and Granite brings the raw beauty of natural stone benchtops to kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces across the region. After years of flying under the radar, their new showroom is now open to customers with a taste for something unique. The Matakana-based company has long been a favourite amongst local interior designers and architects. They have added a distinctive flair to many high-profile houses and developments, such as the exclusive Tara Iti Golf Club in Te Arai. Owners Phil Holt and Caleb Muliaumasealii met in 2017 when they bonded over a few beers and a mutual passion for natural stone. “The company that Caleb worked for in Auckland was closing down and word went out that everything was up for sale – I went down there to have a look and got chatting to Caleb,” says Phil, who at that time was already running paving and tile company Timeless Stone. “I got a real appreciation for Caleb’s experience and his proficiency in reading natural stone. our close-knit, hardworking team of locals, and the relationships we’ve built with designers, architects and builders in the region,” he says.

Caleb had spent several years commuting from Mathesons Bay into Auckland, where he had worked on many House of the Year winning projects. But he was ready for a change in lifestyle and more time to enjoy the local beaches.

Touchstone’s new showroom is the perfect place to find inspiration.

“It’s definitely a much better quality of life now – no doubt at all,” says Caleb. Caleb and Phil both started out “on the tools” cutting and installing stone, with experience working in London, meeting the high expectations of international customers. They make a good team: Caleb brings his expertise from the manufacturing and technical side, and Phil brings the business know-how. Phil says their location on Matakana Valley Road was “a stroke of luck”. “These don’t come available often, but we got the chance and took it. It’s been really good for us, here in the village. We’re very grateful for

“People walk through the door with their plans, cabinetry samples and paint samples – we look at that together and help them select the perfect stone to accentuate their design,” says Caleb. “We work closely with some fantastic importers and wholesalers to source stones globally. We hold a wide range of sample pieces, as well as full slabs for viewing in the showroom. And if a customer wants something different, they can name a stone from anywhere in the world and we’ll get a hold of it,” he says. “We’d like to introduce a lot more people to the beauty of natural stone.”

MOVING HEAVEN AND EARTH

Wading through the knee-high grass up to a cold and windy hilltop a couple stood gazing upon the breathtaking view of rolling hills and vineyards. When Doug from Red Dell Rural and Coastal Development Specialists first met the owners, they were standing in their gumboots in a paddock and at that point it was just a dream. “They had a distinct vision for their property," says Doug. "They were determined to retain the natural ridge line so their house appeared nestled

into the hill. Their dream featured symmetrical terraced lawns and an access way that took you on a journey through the landscape and up to the house." After hearing their plans and coordinating with the architect and landscape designer, the Red Dell team was able to sculpt the land to include these specific design elements, whilst retaining the natural aesthetic. During the development, the owners were based

in Akaroa, far from where their dream was unfolding. As the project progressed, the Red Dell team relied on technology like FaceTime to keep them fully informed, and to discuss improvements as they happened. "It is through great communication, skilled workmanship and attention to detail we are able to consistently create premium house sites," says Doug. If you are building a home and have not given

much thought to the earthworks, you are not alone. But don't underestimate the significance of high-quality earthworks. Once you build, there is no changing the earth beneath. "We strive to deliver enduring, premium work on every job we do and are committed to continuing our history of client satisfaction," says Doug. Red Dell is owned by brothers Doug and Logan Reddell. The company works exclusively in

Rodney, because of their desire to live and work locally. But you could argue that they did it for the view. This property, like so many others the team has worked on, boasts a spectacular 'view from the office'. And as for the gumboot clad couple with the big dream? "We could not recommend Doug and his team more highly. Efficient, practical and they helped us make good decisions. Red Dell brought

an artist eye to the contracting. They not only executed the work, they contributed to the vision and we couldn't be happier," they say. Now the gumboots are off and that hilltop sits drenched in sun, ready for the next stage of development. For this is not where the story ends, but where it begins. 021 362 852 www.reddell.co.nz

SUPER CITY SOLAR Few people realise that there’s a solar company based in Warkworth - that has become the go-to solar and electrical installer for a number of New Zealand’s major electricity retailers and electrical suppliers. Super City Solar (SCS) Founder, and Electrical Engineer, Ashley Jones is a local through and through. It was his international experience that gave Ashley the edge when establishing the business, with insights into the energy sector gleaned from France, Britain, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Now he has a young, energetic team travelling to solar jobs around the country, with some 45,000+ solar panels installed. Residential new builds, renovations, motor homes, boats, yachts, porter coms, dairy farms, schools, commercial projects, solar farms, micro grids – they’ve done them all. If you’re building a new eco-home, solar power is as important as double-glazing or proper insulation. Ashley is passionate about seeing people get the most out of their investment with the right set up. Using only the excess energy that would otherwise be exported to heat your water, reducing the use of your boiler, is one such clever and simple example, as hot water tends to account for 30% of an average power bill. It’s a fast-changing industry. New bifacial ‘glass

A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY If you are finishing off a new build or renovation, or just refreshing an existing space, there is a huge choice of window furnishings. This choice means you need to ensure you’re getting not just the right look, but also the best type of curtains or blinds for your space. Navigating between the Kiwi love of space and light, and need for warmth and glare protection can be tricky, and a good consultant who can take you from concept to installation is worth their weight in gold. Curtain and Blind Specialists are a local company, based in Warkworth, who have the experience in our area to help make this happen. Don is trained in architecture and design for those tricky situations and Mel is a natural colour expert. They provide a free measure and quote service, basing their prices on quality suppliers and fabrics. “It is sometimes tempting, especially at the end of the building process, to look at lower cost options to finish off,” says Don, “but we have seen a number of clients for whom this has meant replacement soon after. Good quality should last and is a worthwhile investment.” As an example of the options available, one of the most flexible products is the Honeycomb cellular blind system. These are stunning blinds, which not only give excellent insulation properties, but are also flexible to suit modern window styles. “You can customise them with different operating systems, or have them suitable for both Day and Night applications.”

THE OAKS ON NEVILLE

One of the newest and exciting places to pop up in Warkworth township has been ‘The Oaks on Neville’. Offering its residents a prime location to relax into retirement and enjoy the amenities on their doorstep. One of the main attractions of The Oaks for Don and Wendy Hawkings is the security of the village. Don appreciates the quality of the view from their apartment and the facility itself, as well as the ease of access to all the community facilities on his mobility scooter. Being in the centre of town he is close to everything and hardly ever has to use his car, which entails lifting his wheelchair in and out. And there are no parking issues!

Both Don and Wendy say they couldn’t speak highly enough of the staff with regular residents/ staff meetings keeping everyone fully informed about village activities. Companionship and social interaction are a big attraction for the couple and they both make the most of the The Oaks Café, library, gym and lounge on a daily basis. Their visitors comment on the standard of the fittings and finishings within The Oaks. Wendy says, “we all need to make wise decisions about our future while we are still able to." Warwick and Hueline Massey say that downsizing

from a rural lifestyle block was a requirement. “The Oaks provides easy and convenient access to all the amenities that Warkworth offers – on foot! Our car is in the garage much more than on the road.” “The operators have been easy and honest to deal with from our first contact. The staff are always cheerful, helpful and love to get feedback on ideas and services. We both use the gym and pool – the aqua-exercise classes have added another dimension to the keep-fit/get active adage. The library is also growing in content and variety.” They both say they feel very secure and enjoy having safe access to the parking facility. “Being

where we can have afternoon teas, drinks and nibbles. The Oaks Café adjoins the communal lounge and you can choose to either eat in the café or in the lounge itself.”

Gay Greig says she decided to come to The Oaks to be closer to family and chose The Oaks because it is very much part of the community. “Banks are close by and the post office is only minutes away. The council library is just along the road and the supermarkets are a just a few minutes walk.” The Oaks on Neville is a family owned business and the staff have been very welcoming, spending time to help Gay settle in. She says, “We have a lovely view of the trees and garden. There is a large communal lounge with comfortable seating

The Oaks van takes its residents on regular outings, such as to the movies in Matakana or to places of interest, and as more residents arrive the variety of trips and gatherings will increase. Barry Ferguson and his sister Nancy were among the first residents to move into The Oaks as they decided it was time to simplify their lives and have less to take care of. They enjoy the sunny setting and outlook from their apartment, with interesting, peaceful views of the bush and

IN THE ZONE

So you have a space, an idea and an end goal of what you want from that space. Get a couple of coloured pens and a big note pad, and get ready to zone! Zoning means taking a space and sectioning it off into areas of use. i.e. outdoor entertaining, productive gardens (vegetable gardens or orchards), shade garden, entrance area and so on. Before you get started have a walk around and take note of what your main vantage points are. Go and stand or sit in your living room, balcony or bedroom, look out into the space and think about what you’d like to see. A feature tree such as a Manchurian Pear tree or Smoke Bush can create amazing vistas from medium distances. Or maybe some Poor Knights Lily outside the living room windows. It is essential to look at the space from all angles. Secondly, think about what you do in these outdoor spaces? Do you like entertaining outdoors? Do you have kids? Pets? Do you want

or have a vegetable garden? Go through and make a list of all the things you do or would like to do outdoors and start allocating zones. There is no point in zoning an area until you know exactly what you require from each zone. From there you can sketch out what you need, for example a shade garden for the kids where you may need an Evergreen tree and shelter from the westerly sun so an east facing area would be best, preferably against a high hedge or tree line. Now for some plants! Start making a note of plants you like, head down to your favourite nursery, go on Pinterest, get some books and start to compile a list. There are no rules in this, it is just about creating a mini library of plants you like. As you collect them, write down their botanical name and make a few notes on what it most prefers e.g. Telopea ‘Bridal Gown’ flowers in spring, should be placed in full sun and likes well drained soil. Now these might not be plants you

know where to put immediately but you need a site specific catalogue of things you like and know their uses to refer to. Now start zoning and start creating your perfect outdoor space! To get you started here are some great ideas from our friends at Gardens By Glovers. Stephanotis Floribunda - great for conservatories or sheltered outdoor areas. Have an amazing aroma. Hionochloa Hlavicans - These miniature toi tois are great for intermingled planting and looks effective en masse. Cotinus Coggygria Royal Purple - a stunning feature tree, deciduous and flowers in summer.

GOING NATIVE PHOTOS

Ricky Panhuis often gets asked, “What native plants can I plant on my property?” The first thing he asks is “Where in Mangawhai do you live?” With Mangawhai's huge range of soil types from sand to clay, volcanic and wetland areas of the upper reaches of the harbour there is a native plant to suit every situation. These plants have evolved over millions of years to grow in these often tough conditions. Pre human settlement every part of New Zealand was entirely covered in native fauna. Our forefathers cleared the land for kauri, then for farming, with minimal regard for the environment. Fast forward to present day we are faced with climate change, huge loss of biodiversity and sediment and nutrient runoff into our harbours; Ricky and Jess of Mangawhai Natives are doing

their small bit to try to improve these issues. At Mangawhai Natives the team focuses on collecting seed from the Mangawhai and surrounding areas, choosing to grow plants that flourish and are naturally found here. Clients needs can vary, whether it is for attracting birds and bees, providing shelter, erosion control or cleaning up the waterways. So when advising people what to plant where, they know what works well according to their property and needs.

native trees. With the government's ‘One Billion Trees Programme’ taking affect and the general public's awareness around the importance of improving our environment, it is a very exciting and positive industry to be in. The planting season (April-November) has just kicked off for their business with some exciting projects ahead. Ricky and Jess are very approachable and are passionate about assisting in your planting needs, from small gardens to large scale restoration.

Ricky's childhood passion evolved from growing up surrounded by bush in the Kaipara, and with his grandfather, uncles and mum all in the nursery industry, it was inevitable his hobby would eventually lead into a thriving, home-based family business.

THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER: LOCAL FOOD FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

The Farmer’s Daughter, situated on rural farmland overlooking the Omaha Estuary, has quickly established itself as one of the foremost gardens-to-table daytime dining experiences in the Matakana region. Owner/Operator Kate Rose grew up in Matakana, with a classic, country style childhood and after ten years living and working in Ponsonby, she moved home to raise her young son. Driving to Omaha Beach, Kate saw a ‘For Lease’ sign on the site that would become ‘The Farmer’s Daughter’. Kate’s instinct told her that this hidden gem of a site was under-utilised. This paired with a vision of what she hoped would one day be a true garden-to-table dining destination, has meant that The Farmer’s Daughter has constantly evolved and grown. Jason Van Dorsten was lured from Vietnam to Matakana under the guise of sunshine, game

34

fishing and a new project as Head Chef at The Farmer’s Daughter. Jason brings a wealth of hospitality knowledge as co-founder and former Executive Chef of New Zealand’s premier authentic Asian dining experiences: Café Hanoi, Saan and Xuxu. Having spent the better part of the last year living abroad, fully immersed in the culture and food of SouthEast Asia, Jason is thrilled to execute a wholly different concept back in his home country. Kate and Jason are looking to grow the business to include a much anticipated, evening dining experience, as well as a continued focus on the kitchen gardens, whereby the majority of the produce for the restaurant will be grown on-site. The eatery has a simple ethos for their offering; seasonal, sustainable and locally sourced. They’ve partnered with local growers and artisan producers to curate their ever-changing menus.

The beverage offering is succinct - Peroni is poured on tap, with local bottled craft beer available alongside, a wine list that lends itself to an organically produced drop, and a handful of seasonal, produce based cocktails. The Farmer’s Daughter coined the term ‘Country Bistro’ and dinner is set to continue in this style, with fresh and seasonal produce, local fish, underutilised cuts of meat and the continued champion of the humble vegetable. Inclusivity is the vibe and the young, dynamic team is working hard to showcase an intimate space, where everyone is welcome, whether a casual catch up with friends, or in celebration of a special occasion.

WELCOME TO EUTOPIA WORDS

Marijke Valkenburg, along with her partner Robert ter Veer, have been working full time on the enormous rebuild and redesign of Eutopia’s original structure since early 2014, finally bringing the site to fruition, in the form of a truly special and unique café. “We thought it would only take eighteen months,” she confides in me, as we sit nestled amongst the many mosaics that coat just about every surface of their creation. When you combine glass, ceramic, steel and stone you don't expect an organic appearance to result. But Eutopia is a work inspired by the native flora and fauna of Aotearoa and in a way, the structure seems to grow up from the very earth it's built on. “Opening just before Easter and the school holidays was like being thrown in the deep end before learning to swim, but we got through it somehow,” she muses, with a sigh of relief. To open any new café is a daunting task, but to open just before one of the great migrations of the year, with a location just off State Highway 1 was a mammoth ask for a team who had never worked together before. After a month, the crowds have

HUGO

REDDING

mostly died down and what is left is a serene atmosphere, in which they are hard at work building upon their successes and mistakes. For any café, there are two things that must be present in order to have any chance of survival. Good Food and Good Coffee, and on this front Eutopia delivers in droves. Their head chef Rudy Parlak, has made a stunning return to the industry, having owned many well loved and regarded establishments in Auckland until in more recent years becoming a practicing nutritionist and health coach. These years have had an impact on the way that Rudy prepares his food, with quality, health benefits and origin of the ingredients all being considered before a dish goes out to the customer. This is a menu that refuses to be boxed in, with dishes ranging from kiwi café classics and fresh local seafood, to high end Mediterranean fusion. Out front, their barista Matt Watts has had a very busy first month, collaborating with their local coffee roasters Rush to bring his specific style of specialty coffee to Kaiwaka and sourcing the

best quality ingredients available. Eutopia uses an organic fair-trade coffee blend for their milk coffees and Matt brought in a rotating selection of single origin beans for the black coffee lovers. They have an impressive range of alternative milks from Milklab and have recently partnered with milk producer Bella Vacca Jerseys, to bring their less processed, real milk in glass bottles to customers. What does it mean to be sustainable in this day and age? A café is only as sustainable as the processes that is uses and so in building Eutopia, Marijke and Robert started from the ground up, with solar heated water systems, a full circle waste recycling system, with food scraps picked up and fed to local pigs, coffee grounds taken home and used in their garden and buying in as much local organic produce as possible. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 7.30am-4pm.

THE PERFECT BREW

RUSH COFFEE

RAVISH

Rush coffee is a family affair with a passion for excellent coffee. Founded in 2006, the business is based in Tomarata, allowing easy delivery to local cafés and retailers. Five gold medals for Rush Espresso clearly demonstrates their passion for consistent coffee excellence.

“We aim to make your coffee experience the best for you every time,” says owners Kerri and Sarah. “From the smile that greets you from behind the counter to the smell of freshly baked treats, or those rushed mornings when your coffee is already waiting and ready to go!”

They are always on the lookout for new flavours. The tasting journey is a delight for the team at Rush, constantly cupping the latest crops to give their brew the Rush edge. A recent highlight was the tasting journey to select beans for inclusion in Bennett’s Espresso Bars. Rush Coffee loves their delicious local liaisons.

All of their baristas are 'Supreme' trained, so that means regardless of who's on the machine you can trust that your Ravish coffee will consistently meet your expectations. “We compost, we recycle. We create a community around the coffee we serve.” Ravish’s coffee beans are also sustainably and ethically sourced. 726 Matakana Road (Corner of Sharp Road), Matakana

PAKIRI BEACH HOLIDAY PARK

SO FRENCH

Delighting guests and locals, Pakiri Beach Holiday Park began serving delicious coffee this summer after adding a coffee machine to the camp store. All staff are either experienced baristas, or fully trained. They use locally small-batch roasted Matakana Roaster’s beans. Rachel Macfarlane, café owner and restaurateur for 15 years prior to taking on management of Pakiri Beach Holiday Park, says “I’m passionate about coffee, it’s been a great addition to our store - complementing our warm and welcoming environment.” When you’re next over in Pakiri for a winter stroll, stop in for a coffee, snack and a friendly chat.

After years of extensive coffee drinking from France to New Zealand, Volt Espresso has impressed So French the most. This New Zealand based multi-award winning coffee is pure, delectable, and positively addictive with the melting taste of caramel and the kick of caffeine. Six years ago in June, when So French first opened in the friendly town of Warkworth, they wanted to give you the blend that kindled their mornings with a comforting hug that is borderline therapeutic. Organic and fair-trade, you can be assured that So French and Volt Espresso have your back.

REBECKA

Matakana Fire Brigade’s Open Day was a fun filled event for the whole family. The kids got their share of excitement from getting shut into a room full of smoke and learning how to safely get out. The grown-ups got theirs from the demonstration of the best way to put out a kitchen fire – and the worst way! Having a go with the big firehose was a favourite for everyone. Station Chief Peter Guild says that whilst the local community are incredibly generous with donations, the brigade is finding it harder to get people to volunteer their time. “People are busy and sometimes also have the wrong picture of the skills needed,” Peter says. “There’s a certain level of fitness required to become a fire-fighter, but there’s a place for everyone in the brigade.”

“We obviously attend to fires, but 80% of the calls are actually medical related. All our brigade volunteers are medically trained to the co-responder or first-responder level. The closest ambulance is in Warkworth, so if somebody has a heart-attack in Omaha or Points Wells, we’ll be there a lot quicker,” he says. The operational support team has members of all ages and backgrounds, all capable of administering first aid until the ambulance arrives. Weekdays are the hardest time for crewing the vehicle, so the ideal volunteer is someone working locally or from home. Katie Smart is on the National Women’s Development Team, focussing on recruiting, retraining and developing women. “We would like to see more women in the brigade. It might be a mother with some free time in the day when the kids are in school,” she says. “All the training is given to you, and we even compensate if you need to take time off work.” “As a volunteer you get a sense of personal satisfaction giving back to your

Clouds layer the sky, hills swell and undulate. Toi tois line the dusty road, houses and farm buildings are scattered amongst vivid green paddocks. The bridge that connects the road to Pakiri village and beyond, to the whanau property that Ra Gossage calls home, feels symbolic somehow - there is a crossing over of the sea that is required to span from one to the other.

tipuna (meeting houses), pataka (storehouses), on the prow of a waka or on many forms of carving. As well as being decorative, kowhaiwhai patterns also help to tell a story. Ra’s first commission as a traditional kowhaiwhai painter was for her marae, in Omaha. Since then, between raising her family, she has continued to paint and develop her own style of this form of painting.

Ra is kind and welcoming. A distinct feeling of connection to place can be felt, a sense of being grounded. The land, nestled against the scrub-lined banks of Pakiri beach, belonged to her mother’s side, and Ra has lived here since she was ten years old. The late Peter Gossage, famous New Zealand reteller and illustrator of old Maori myths such as ‘How Maui Slowed the Sun’, was her father and a great influence on Ra’s creative expression. “He made traditional Maori kowhaiwhai patterns. When I was younger I’d find them in his studio and copy them. That symbolism has been part of my subconscious growing up. He was my main teacher when I first started painting; he still inspires me now.”

Ra’s current body of work is largely based on koru and kape designs. Kape means ‘crescent’, and is a traditional motif. The colours she uses are contemporary and complementary. Whiti Mai Te Ra’s ochre, mustard and black koru patterns reference the sun’s rays, while Kape Whetu’s kape and star motifs in black and white invoke the heavens, the cosmos, and the gods above. “As I paint them, the meaning comes through. The depth of meaning is the most beautiful thing about kowhaiwhai. I’m inspired by the patterns I see in nature, and more recently in mythology, the gods and the elements, too.”

Kowhaiwhai are traditionally painted in whare

Ra Gossage’s first love though? Music. Inspiration has flown in the last couple of months especially, seeing her write a lot of new material and

recording her first EP with a band in Auckland. “It’s always been a dream of mine to record. It’s a challenge but it’s exciting - it’s so good to get moving again.” The EP’s working title is Ra Gossage - Real. “All the songs are really personal - things that have happened, that I’ve felt.” A black acoustic guitar straddles her knee, fingers begin to strum; Ra begins to sing, “Hand in hand beneath rainbow skies...sweet darling lover of mine, soul to soul since the beginning of time…” Her voice is soulful and sincere, with sweet lilts which dance across the lyric’s melody. On 24 June at Whangateau Hall, Ra will be performing her own original music, plus a few soul/jazz covers. “It’ll be largely me and my guitar, pretty raw, plus guest vocalist Jessie Rose Chapman - my cuz from the other side of Pakiri river, and guest guitarist Jimmy Larkin will play a few with me, too.” Expect another excellent night of music at the hall - doors open 7pm with $10 entry. www.facebook.com/ragossage www.thepoiroom.co.nz

AUCKLAND WINE WEEK Auckland winemakers are banding together to showcase the best the region has to offer at the first-ever Auckland Wine Week being held this June. With the winemaking regions of Waiheke Island, West Auckland and Matakana joining forces, visit Auckland between 13-23 June, where wine lovers will find local wineries abuzz with events and cellar door tastings, Auckland-centric tastings and specials at participating retailers, restaurants and bars, and the country’s biggest wine tasting event ‘Winetopia’ presented by Singapore Airlines taking place on the city’s waterfront. “There is a whole world of wine to be discovered on Auckland’s doorstep, from Waiheke Island with its stunning syrah, world-class Chardonnay, intense Cabernet blends and fine aromatics, to internationally-recognised elegant Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the west, and excellent Pinot Gris, Syrah, Cabernet Blends and emerging red varieties in the north,” says organiser Rob Eliott. “The inaugural event will shine a well-deserved spotlight on the region’s exciting winemaking scene. These wonderful wineries are all within easy reach of the central city and Auckland Wine Week is an opportunity to explore and share in these local treasures.” Head to The Vintry, Matakana on 22 June for an afternoon of rare and hardto-find gems from local wineries including Brick Bay, Hyperion, Runner Duck Estate, Sculptureum and Matakana Estate.

The Beachfront home you’ve been dreaming of

Boathouse Bay sits at the Northern most end of Snells Beach. The architect Ken Crosson has considered every detail, with boatshed inspired form to contemporary interiors flowing onto sun-drenched terraces just metres from the beach. Within a few kilometres of your beachside home you can explore Matakana’s cafes and art galleries or spend an afternoon enjoying the local wine and sculptures at Brick Bay. Then settle in for the evening listening to the waves and thinking what else you could possibly add to perfection.

• Two- and three-bedroom designs • Vaulted ceilings and captivating sea views • A one-hour drive from Auckland • Priced from $849,000 to $1,749,000 • Under construction, over 50% sold

The beachside home you’ve been dreaming of is available now at 59 Arabella Lane, Snells Beach.
