EDIBLE COFFEE CUPS AT MR GRIND While in lockdown Sally from Mr Grind Warkworth had a good think about the future of the coffee shop and sustainability moving forward. After some research she found these New Zealand made, edible cups on Instagram and jumped at the idea. Twiice edible cups were first created in 2015 when a creative bunch were spending the day at the beach in Okahu Bay, Auckland. An unexpected idea arose when father and son, Stephen and Jamie and their lovely wives Simone and Theresa, were inspired to create an eco-friendly, fun and tasty edible cup. And so the Twiice story began. So next time you visit Mr Grind try your coffee in a Twiice cup, with no waste and no dishes. Planet saved! Open Monday to Friday 6.30am-2pm, Saturday 7.30am-2pm and Sunday 9am-1pm-ish. 2 Wharf Street, Warkworth | www.twiice.co.nz

Compostable Design

Local company GDP have created a range of products to give us protection and peace of mind, without compromising the environment. Words Kathy Hunter

Paul Russell, CEO of Matakana-based design group Global Design Production, last had a chat with us back in 2017. Since then the Omaha local has been busy, and not just with GDP’s core business which provides design and manufacture services for anyone with an idea they want to take to market. He’s also been developing two new in-house homewares brands, both of which have a focus on building a more sustainable environment. One is Vectral Lighting which produces designer solar lighting products. Through it GDP has recently launched a range of black, ‘architectural’ outdoor lighting, which wouldn’t look out of place at a high-end showroom like ECM, but at a fraction of the cost. The other is GDP’s new in-house brand, Reform, which was launched in 2018 and is all about bringing sustainable basics to a retail market. “We’re always keen to embrace and commercialise innovative ideas, but wherever possible we want to ensure there’s a focus on the environment,” says Paul. “We’ve long worked with clients in primary industries to produce compostable and recyclable product-handling solutions. For example, GDP is proud to work with bumblebee hives which are couriered to orchards around the country; these will soon

be 100% compostable after use. Bumblebee pollination is an exciting field to be helping with, especially as these hives were previously made of wax-coated cardboard that can’t be recycled.”

and primary industry use, but since ongoing regular use by industry and the public may be on the cards, Paul is keen to find a longterm sustainable solution, one which may also become... chic.

Reform’s compostable technology uses either corn-starch or sugarcane, which is processed into formed 100% compostable products. “It can be applied to almost anything. We saw an immediate consumer need for rubbish bags and cling film which we launched at local retailers Matakana Four Square and New World in Warkworth in 2019.”

“We’re designing a mask in conjunction that has fully compostable modules, including a nano-fibre sheep’s wool filter, but to integrate it into everyday life we’re looking at creating an open source I.P. cover that integrates with the mask unit. You’d be able to download the pattern and make your own, but we’d love New Zealand designers to get on board and create their own ranges.”

In the Covid-19 pandemic, GDP spotted gaps in the market. PPE and hygiene products were already provided to the medical industry; these were rapidly added to the Reform range for public access. There’s hand sanitiser, 100% compostable gloves and baby wipes made of bamboo. Paul’s a big fan of the plant. “Some bamboo varieties can grow up to a metre a day, so it’s a hugely sustainable raw material,” he says with satisfaction. Great news for parents too: a range of plant-based disposable nappies are looking likely this year.

Stylish solar, funky facemasks and environappies are all good news. It’s also been mooted that a portion of profits be put aside from Reform’s work to help set up youth composting workshops at schools. “We have a long-term view of building a better planet from the ground up with the next generation,” says Paul. We all know it: compost is king, and with Reform’s input, there’ll be more of it. www.globaldesign.co.nz www.planetreform.co.nz

Facemasks are, of course, the PPE item of the day. GDP have been making and supplying these for some time for medical

Hot shot: Chris Blackbourn On a Wednesday in late March local Chris Blackbourn had the bright idea to tweak a project he had been working on for years, that he thought could help in the fight against Covid-19. Words Luke Williamson

Helping to refashion a thermal pest tracker into a fever scanner for humans with Covid-19 is Chris Blackbourn’s latest computer programming adventure. “I’ve got a lot of contacts overseas and we’ve been watching Covid-19 build momentum over a number of months. I knew New Zealand would be going into lock down soon and I was wondering what I could do to help.” The lightbulb moment came when Chris and his colleagues realised they could repurpose the thermal cameras from their pest management program into devices for scanning humans. “Countries overseas have thermal cameras set up at airports and malls but we don’t have them here. A big problem is affordability and, therefore, accessibility. We’re not trying to create a perfectly calibrated $100,000 camera because we need lots of them with a lower price point – something well under $10,000. Then we can put cameras up and down the country and use them as a screening device.” The aim is not to accurately measure someone’s temperature but to aggregate information about temperature variations. Chris’ software determines if certain populations are running higher temperatures than normal so further services can be

concentrated in those regions. “Time is critical with this virus,” says Chris, “so we’re trying to get the devices out in the field and functioning as soon as possible. I’m fine tuning the software as we go along. I’m currently working on how to make sure we can eliminate false positives from cups of coffee and sausage rolls,” he laughs.

this pandemic changes everything, and I mean everything! However, the other big thing going on, and I don’t think people are really that aware of it, is artificial intelligence.” As an example, Chris cites the development of computers playing chess – they went from nothing to the point where his phone can now beat a grandmaster!

Privacy is very important to the team so no personal information is recorded. “Our goal is to track the virus, not people. We are extremely respectful of the data and people’s privacy.”

Self-driving cars are on the same trajectory, he explains. “We’re getting to the point where a computer can drive a car around a residential area and, very soon, computers will be able to drive a car better than humans. Humans driving cars will one day just be a hobby activity that takes place at a race track on the weekend.”

Chris works from his home office in Matakana so lockdown has not made a big difference to him. “I’ve been here for over five years now and love it. My partner and I made the choice years ago to have a better balance of work and home life so it has been a revelation to see not just our friends but our whole community experience working from home over the last six weeks.” They also started home-schooling their children this year so the Blackbourn family was well ahead of the Coronavirus curve. So what does the future hold for Chris? “Covid-19 is the most important thing going on in the world right now,” he says. “Clearly,

Chris is excited about the positive potential of artificial intelligence even though it will be hugely disruptive and change the employment landscape forever – not unlike a pandemic. “In the same way people weren’t prepared for the arrival of the Coronavirus, I don’t think they’re ready for the arrival of artificial intelligence. There’s some pretty crazy stuff coming down the pipeline,” he chuckles. www.cybercakegames.com www.cacophony.org.nz

This is definitely a house meant to be lived in and enjoyed. “We feel like we have designed and built the perfect home for our stage of life. The kids have one whole wing to themselves with their rooms, bathroom and TV games room, and then the rest of the house and living is in the other wing. It works amazingly for us!” The cherry on top for this coastal property is the pool and its landscaping designed by Andy Hamilton Landscape Design. “The landscaping took us much longer at the end of the job than we expected, but that's because we have never done such a detailed landscape before, you also forget how long things take while doing it on the weekends it's very hard to get traction!” So any tips for planning a house? “I think with every house there are always things you would do slightly differently each time. As people we are always changing our ideas of what we need in a home and how it can work for our family, with this home I think we covered all bases. We have lots of room for growing teenage kids, as well as great storage for all our hobbies and outdoor sports. We have also made the most of the section so that the house feels really connected to the gorgeous landscaping outside.” www.littletreehomes.me www.instagram.com/meetmewherethesunsets

A Bold New World If your home tells the story of who you are and what you love then weeks of lockdown have sent most of us into an editing tailspin, reworking and rewording that story to suit our new reality. While the rest of the world continues to grapple with Covid-19 Kiwis are grappling with bland walls and outdated furnishings. What we’ve seen in the short period since the end of Level 4 is a demand for colour and vibrancy in our homes. If colour is music made visual then Kiwis are ready to kick off their shoes and dance. Fortunately global trends support that desire with a renewed emphasis on nature, on reconnecting with the great outdoors and bringing a little bit of that beauty into our homes. Pantone’s colour is Classic Blue, a gorgeous, rich, jewel tone

that’s not just elegant and uplifting but is easy to incorporate into any colour scheme. It looks luscious in velvet – as drapes, cushions or throws – and adds sophistication to any room as a featured wallpaper or paint. Offset it with blush pink, crisp white or emerald green. If blue is the new grey then green is the new black. The Dulux Paint’s colour of the year is Tranquil Dawn, a soft earthy green reminiscent of olive groves and fresh sage. The emphasis is on serenity and soothing tones and the message is clear - our homes are our sanctuaries, our oasis of calm in a world gone mad and what we’re craving is the security of nature’s palette. ‘Tranquil Dawn’ is a soft enough colour to paint an entire room without feeling overwhelmed

by colour. It works beautifully with Forest Green and Classic Blue, and plays into that continuing tropical trend that we (quite rightly) refuse to abandon. Colour speaks of boldness and confidence and I find it fascinating that so many of our customers at Guthrie Bowron have emerged from lockdown craving it. As a nation we’re waving goodbye to 50 shades of grey and beige and embracing nature’s most enduring gift – colour. New Kitchen Rules! Having now decided you want a new kitchen the next step is to book an appointment with a Kitchen Designer. At this stage you should have a budget in mind and also be considering your appliances. Oven – freestanding, under bench, wall oven, single or double? Hobs – gas, induction or ceramic. Rangehood – do you want to see this or have it concealed inside the cabinetry? Full dishwasher or dish drawer? The fridge size and style and if any of the appliances are to be integrated. The initial consultation is usually in a showroom but can also be on site. This provides the designer with a preliminary understanding of your requirements and desires for your dream kitchen. At this time, it also gives you the opportunity to become familiar with the Kitchen Designer's capabilities. With so much to choose from in terms of style and colour, careful consideration needs to be given to your lifestyle and the way you operate in the kitchen to what is going to suit the style of your home and its surrounding fittings and furniture. During the first meeting, key information will be gathered from you regarding style preferences, functional requirements and budget. It is helpful if you provide your measurements (your house plans if you have them) and photos of your kitchen space.

The initial consultation usually results in providing you with a floor plan layout of your kitchen using 3-D kitchen design software. When starting on a new kitchen the first and most important step is to plan the layout in a way that makes the best use of the space and suits your style of cooking. Every home is unique and different but there are some classic layouts, each with their own benefits. These are single row kitchens, L shaped kitchen, G shaped kitchen, Galley kitchen, U shaped kitchen and the island kitchen. It is normally at this stage that you will be provided with a quote for your new kitchen. To finalise the design for your kitchen, a site visit occurs and accurate measurements are taken. At this time your initial design is reviewed. Once all revisions to your design have been made, you will be provided with revised plans and a reviewed quote, if needed. Whatever best suits your needs and the space, there are some key and essential factors to consider, such as the various zones in your kitchen; you will need a designated food preparation, food storage, cooking, serving and washing-up area. Keep the dishwasher near the sink and try to keep the bin within easy reach of the dishwasher and the food preparation area. Try to keep the utensil drawers, pots and

We dig your support. Thank you to all our customers who have supported us as we reopened at Level 3. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we roll out our new ways of shopping safely.

pans storage, knife block and spices within close range of your cooktop zones. Don't forget to measure all your crockery, glassware, platters and anything else you want to fit away in drawers and cupboards – you’ll want them to fit comfortably in your new kitchen. For clients seeking natural granite bench tops part of the journey is to select your slab/s of stone for your kitchen and just like a piece of timber, every stone top is different in the way the natural veins and quartz flow through each slab. It is important to select the perfect piece that is fit for your new kitchen. After all of the planning and design has been done the Cabinetmaker will get working on manufacturing your new kitchen, then all that is left is for you to enjoy it! Neil Taylor Cabinetmakers and Design have the experience to guide you every step of the way from design to installation when planning your new kitchen or refurbishing your current kitchen. www.cabinetmakers.co.nz 09 425 7017

Love Your Home, Love Your Life Joseph Taylor Homewares (named after owner Angela Chamberlain’s sons’ middle names put together) opened its doors for the first time on 3rd January 2020. After eight years in the conceptual phase dreaming and planning an escape from city lights and finding a special place to call home, all finally came to fruition. Years of road tripping with her kids to the fast growing and exciting small town of Mangawhai, it was here that Angela realised the ‘Joseph Taylor Dream’ could be actualised. The commitment to become a full-time Mangawhaiwaiin meant that Angela would need a project. “It was an ‘aha!’ moment on a trip to Bali when I realised there was

an opportunity,” she says. “I did a recce to further establish the concept, met an agent and gave life to the brand I had so passionately wanted to do.”

With a second collection in store now for

Angela wanted to grow her business slowly to see if there was a market and added layers, such as getting her business online, giving the business time to grow and keep in line with customer demand.

Joseph Taylor Homewares is all about

For Angela, her love of people, travel, sourcing and importing objects and furniture all came together beautifully. “We are excited about working alongside customers to design and create specifically to their tastes and requirements,” she says.

prepared from which the project can be constructed in compliance with building regulations. This includes consideration of structural stability, durability, weather-tightness, thermal performance, services etc. These completed drawings are lodged with the local council for a Building Consent application. Sayes Jackson Architects focus a lot of attention into carefully crafting details. This ensures the initial concept to persist through and be evident even in the finer details.

Build it Right Engaging the right builder is as important as the right Architect. An Architect will aid you in the selection of a suitable builder through a a competitive tender process. The building process is an incredibly exciting time as the big ideas and spaces begin to reveal themselves. But there will inevitably be hurdles for which the experience of your Architect is critical. Architects administrate, in an impartial role, the contractural relationship between you and your builder which includes review of progress, payment claims, and various variations to the contract as they come about. Architects regularly observe the works on site to ensure that it is being carried out to an acceptable standard in accordance with the drawings. Once all is finally built and you can sit down to your first wine in the evening sun - the reward and value from this challenging process can be enjoyed. Your own tailored home is a very special thing - it fits you perfectly so that you can enjoy the most of ‘slice of heaven’ for years to come. Customising Your Comfort When it comes to selecting what kind of floor coverings would best suit your home or office it can be hard to know where to start. The importance of ‘something practical that will last the test of time’, yet also creating that ‘designer home’ look us kiwis strive for has become paramount. You’ll first need to decide what is important in terms of comfort, wear and tear and high use pathways. Think carefully how you use your spaces, indoor/outdoor flow, kids, pets. Going for open-plan living and confused where hard flooring should stop and meet carpet? Look for natural break lines where the transition between floor coverings becomes a seamless part of your home.

A practical floor covering makes for comfortable living Today’s lifestyle is lending to a rise in easycare, durable floor coverings. Current trends are seeing hard flooring become increasingly popular throughout all living spaces with the use of designer rugs to complement and soften spaces like living rooms and dining areas. This leaves room for the addition of a more luxurious carpet to bedrooms, creating an opulent place of rest.

rare native plants, or building a vegetable garden and planting fruit trees. You can take this idea further on a lifestyle block by building storage dams for water security and to mitigate against flooding, or diversifying crop production as a hedge against adverse weather events (which might affect one crop but not another). Sustainability also needs to be considered in terms of cost (how much do you have to spend), timeframe (a staged approach is usually best), and available time (don't bite off more than you can chew).

Future proof

I'm a believer in avoiding trends. A garden should stand the test of time in terms of how well it is built, how resilient it is to extreme weather events (droughts, floods, storms, etc), and its visual quality (i.e. how timeless is its aesthetic). Even the most well-designed garden will require some renewal over time, particularly with regard to plant replacement, but good planning should keep this to a minimum. One WW Advice It's fair to say that many businesses will be feeling the pinch following lockdown and needing the support of locals to help generate turnover under our new normal. Of course, buying and supporting local is One Warkworth’s mantra and has been for many years, but it is even more important now. Early in lock-down, One Warkworth surveyed local businesses to establish what support they needed, and along with advice on how to use remote technology tools such as Zoom and Teams, what they needed most was clear information about the Government's business advisory fund - it seems no-one knew about it! The Government's business advisory fund provides businesses with 100 or less employees up to $5000 for advice on HR, finance and cash flow, business continuity planning, health and wellbeing, marketing and digital strategy. One Warkworth has a six-minute video on their website showing people how to access the funding. Applications are open until the end of June, and there are several local advisors who can help access the fund including Consulting HQ for HR, KGA Accounting Plus for cash flow and finance and the Marketing Lab for digital strategy. Another One Warkworth member, Into the Blue NZ Ltd, is offering businesses advice on the wage subsidy, and by keeping in direct contact with government departments, can provide up to date advice and clarity on other funding initiatives. Businesses are encouraged to update their listings on the One Warkworth website business directory. One Warkworth is also planning to bring some local experts together to develop a campaign that is more relevant and meaningful to the local market – watch this space.

After six weeks of only essential travel, the environmental benefits of reducing human activity have been noted. Air pollution over China is declining, the water clarity of the canals in Venice has improved, while in New Zealand people living in urban areas have reported hearing native birdsong again, and a humpback whale was even sighted in the Wellington harbour.

We are fortunate to live in an area with a number of local shopping areas which can easily be navigated on foot. If you made just one trip like this each week instead of making a 1.6km round trip by car, you could reduce your annual driving distance by 837 kms. That would save about 90 litres of petrol and keep 0.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the environment.

Of course we need to return to some form of what was normal to bring our economy back to life - but what if there is a way of creating a thriving economy while retaining some of these environmental benefits?

Of course buying locally produced products reduces the carbon footprint as it hasn’t had to travel far but there are benefits for buying other items locally as well. Reduced need for the amount of packaging usually required with online shopping is another tick in the ‘pro’column for shopping in your own backyard.

Channelling our spending towards local businesses may just be the answer.

After an increase in time spent in front of a screen, forgetting the mall and heading out of the house to reconnect with locals could have multiple benefits for your physical and mental health as well. Getting out and about (while still keeping that social distance) gives a new opportunity to connect with people, and build a closer community. If that doesn’t quite motivate you to resist jumping in the car and rushing into the city there are financial benefits both to our local economy and also to your own wallet. Studies have found that from money spent locally 60% is retained locally compared to large format stores and malls where only 43% remains in the area. Supporting local operators also gives our community a unique combination of offerings which also has a personal benefit as it can drive up house prices. And, after exploring the local strip, you can’t quite find what you are looking for – you can return to your screens and ask the community on any of the local Facebook pages – sometimes there are artisans and service providers working from home that you don’t know are there. This period of restriction has shown us how lucky we are to live here with some of the best produce, people and environment in New Zealand. It has also shown us how powerful the combined actions of individuals can be. It’s our turn now to support local and sustain the type of place we want to work, live and play in.

OPEN EVERY SATURDAY 8AM - 1PM

We are looking for organic growers in the local area to join our market. If this sounds like you please contact Fiona our Market Manager on mobile 021 0225 5828 or email markets@matakanavillage.co.nz SUPPORT LOCAL

New Measures to Help Local Tourism in 2020 The Tourism and Hospitality sector in New Zealand has been one of the hardest hit with COVID-19, turning the tap off for many businesses overnight as the country’s borders closed and we went into lockdown on 26 March. This did not stop several dedicated members from Matakana Coast Tourism (MCT) from attending a Special General Meeting via ‘Zoom’ in late March. The meeting saw the adoption of a new constitution, voting in a new Chair and agreeing to employ a part-time paid Manager to become a key liaison with operators and developing relationships with organisations such as ATEED and TNZ. Richard Didsbury, owner of Brick Bay Winery and Sculpture Park and Matakana Village, accepted the position of Chair. “At a time when the Tourism and Hospitality sector

is facing great uncertainty, I believe the changes in the MCT funding model and the appointment of a dedicated part-time manager to work with our members in the areas from Puhoi to Pakiri will ensure that the region is poised to adapt in how we work in this new environment and ensure we are promoting what our fantastic region has to offer to Aucklanders and the wider domestic market,” said Richard. Over lockdown a rigorous recruitment process took place to fill the position of a part-time manager, with Karen ThompsonSmith, formally the Destination Development Manager at ATEED accepting the position. Karen and her family have recently returned from Toronto Canada where they have been living for two years.

When meeting with Karen she stated, “I have been visiting this region since I was a teenager first camping and then later my family built a holiday home in Omaha. I am excited to be representing an area offering so much to the community and to visitors.” Karen will be contacting and visiting members and operators now that Level 2 is in place, and working on a Strategy Plan that highlights how MCT can assist its members to promote their business and opportunities to collaborate with others in the region and surrounding areas. karen.thompsonsmith@matakanacoasttourism. org.nz www.matakanacoast.co.nz

Chocolate Covered Love

If you can cover it in chocolate...why not? Locals Kristine and George Bernadska found a way to turn a long standing ambition into an enterprise.

An engineer and a microbiologist by trade, Team Chocolate Barn are now chocolatier and coffee roasters by choice! “For the best part of 30 years we have travelled the world chasing our previous obsessions of surfing, kitesurfing, snowboarding and paragliding,” says owner Kristine Bernadska. The couple moved out of Auckland, settling on ten acres of Waipu land and transforming it into a permaculture farm. Here they built a barn that would hold 100 people for their daughter’s wedding and after the celebration converted it into a small chocolate factory: ‘The Chocolate Barn’. Kristine’s passion for chocolate began after she took a two-day chocolate class 15 years ago. Since then she has been studying at different Chocolate Academies and Patisserie Schools around the world. In 2019, along with her husband George, Kristine decided to turn her passion and ambition into reality. ‘The Chocolate Barn’ began creating their signature coffee beans and goji berries coated in chocolate. “I learnt quickly along the way and created a fresh new look for the chocolate market.”

“Crafting the world’s greatest chocolate pairings is now our life’s work,” she tells us. “At the studio we specialise in chocolate coating (technically called chocolate ‘panning’) fruit and nuts, using our own blend of high cocoa percentage dark and milk chocolates, all of which are 100% free from palm oil.” So what makes their chocolate products so special? “Every step of the way we’re obsessing over the smallest of details.” Kristine feels that by “minding the little things”, they can ensure that everything comes together perfectly. Every pouch that leaves The Chocolate Barn is handcrafted with passion so you can share their love of handcrafted chocolate products. They try their best to source local ingredients wherever possible: the coffee beans are from Feoh Espresso Roastery and the macadamia nuts from Aotea Macadamias, both based in Waipu.

“On the second day of Level 4 isolation we received an email congratulating us on our Bronze Medal, awarded for our Almonds Coated in Dark Chocolate. It was incredibly positive news for us and for all of our customers during lockdown.” Luckily small chocolate artisan producers were still able to sell chocolate online, bringing joy to their customers’ bubbles, especially over Easter. “During this time we have been creating a lot of new recipes and practising our new chocolate and dessert ranges, which will be available shortly for all of our customers.” You can follow The Chocolate Barn on Instagram or check out their Facebook page for upcoming news and more mouth-watering chocolates and desserts! www.instagram.com/thechocolatebarnwaipu www.facebook.com/thechocolatebarnwaipu

In February 2020, the couple decided to enter some of their chocolates into the New Zealand Chocolate Awards, which was judged in a pre-Covid-19 environment.

Full Moon Farm

With an ethos to have their goods grown organically and sustainably, Brad and Sarah Jane created this little piece of paradise in Mangawhai.

After spending the last decade living in beautiful Byron Bay, Brad and Sarah Jane returned to New Zealand feeling inspired to create their dream of living sustainably and spending more time together. Their little piece of paradise, Full Moon Farm began. “We worked closely with James Andrews of Thrive Permaculture here in Mangawhai to design our property to suit our core principles,” says Sarah. “Everything here is grown organically, and this ethos extends to our kitchen where we bake our beautiful sourdough bread.” “We have begun to implement our full vision of a food forest permaculture system but we have a lot of work ahead of us. Thankfully we did not just rush things along as our vision has been gradually evolving and changing as we gain experience and learn from mistakes.”

Their main crops are currently avocados and bananas but with over thirty five different types of fruit and nut trees they will have a much more diverse selection of produce in the future. Their market garden project started in late 2018 and with much enthusiasm they started growing as many different types of vegetables as possible. “This turned out to be an unplanned experiment in what works and what doesn't. Now we grow a more refined variety of produce and are looking to specialise in a few high quality crops,” they tell us. Moving to Mangawhai, they quickly realised if they were going to have good quality organic bread, they were going to have to make it themselves. Brad’s background as a chef, and passion for good food meant that

the transition to become a baker felt like the natural next step. “We started to offer organic sourdough down at the Mangawhai Tavern Markets on a Saturday. We started small but quickly realised that there was a solid demand. Sourdough has now become one of our main products and we have plans for a purpose built bakery space to expand into.” They currently deliver sourdough, bananas and other produce twice weekly within the Mangawhai area and supply Brewed As Collective at the Heads. For more information please text Brad on 021 301984 or message through Instagram @fullmoonfarmnz 391 Tara Road, Mangawhai

Time for Tea Tea & Chai is a local tea brand based in beautiful Mangawhai Heads, created from Clare Seagrave’s personal passion for tea and the realisation that it was extremely difficult to source great tasting Chai Latte blends, that were also free from dairy and gluten. As a qualified Chef and registered Clinical Nutritionist, the Chai Latte Blend needed to taste great and have good quality spices to optimise the nutritional benefits. The blend contains ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, clove, all-spice and nutmeg - historically known as Mother Nature’s natural preventative medicine cabinet. Warming spices can help to increase circulation, are antimicrobial, anti-viral and have anti-inflammatory properties. “Our Chai Latte blend has the perfect amount of spice and a full bodied flavour - pure deliciousness,” says Clare. Their other blend is the Tea & Chai Aztec Cacao Spice Latte, which is a spiced chocolate blend using certified organic cacao. Cacao is high in magnesium which is deficient in New Zealand soils and therefore in the New Zealand diet. Magnesium is required by the body more in times of stress, and is especially important for digestive, nerve and bone health, therefore vital for optimum health. Within the Tea & Chai Online Store is the ‘Apothecary Tea Shop’, featuring herbal teas that are particularly beneficial to

well-being. Their Kawakawa, lemongrass, ginger and calendula tea is a blend that in Maori medicine would be used for bladder, stomach and chest ailments. This tea is ideal to have during a cold and makes a beautiful ice tea in the summer months. “Our Hibiscus Tea, made from the Hibiscus flower, is an excellent tonic for menopause as it naturally regulates body temperature, aiding with hot flushes. This is why it is so popular in Egypt where this tea is sourced.” All Tea & Chai Teas are of the highest quality - from Kombucha blend to Black Assam Tea, After-Dinner Mint Rooibos, White Tea Autumn Berry Infusion to the popular Licorice Lovers Tea (this is very licoricey), there is something for everyone. “Nurturing the planet is very important to us,” says Clare. “The inner packaging is made from a new technology called ‘Natureflex’ which is home compostable within 14 days, the outer is made of brown paper.” Their tea is all loose leaf and tea infusers are available in their online store, along with teapots to turn your tea indulgence into a sustainable one. Aku With a mission to end throw-away products, local Holly Wright made her own difference in the battle for sustainability and minimising waste.

In 2018 Holly Wright, a pattern-maker and sewing machinist working in the fashion and film industries, began supplying friends and family with the washable, reusable cloth menstrual pads she had made. She wanted to stop using throw-away products, and found the cloth to be far superior to disposable pads and tampons. When Holly started Aku, cloth pads were still new to many. “Some people had never heard of cloth pads, but they were still very open to the idea. People were questioning the use of disposable products that often contain chemicals." To make the switch to cloth an easy experience, she created a reusable, washable pad that is also user friendly, aimed at those new to zero waste living. "People are working hard to reduce their everyday waste, and periods are an easy way to begin that journey.” Made in black fabric with a super absorbent bamboo core, the machine-washable Aku pads will last over five years. Each one can

replace up to 120 disposable products, so they are very economical. “A couple of shops asked for some and things grew from there." Aku is now an online store and wholesaler supplying thousands of pads to women all over New Zealand. “I chose the name ‘Aku’ as it is a personal pronoun translating in many languages around the world.” Meaning ‘I’ or ‘me’, also ‘belonging to you’ and ‘to open, to begin’. “It’s also the name of an ancient Babylonian Moon-god – a perfect fit for a period product!” Aku is very much a family business. Holly runs the manufacturing from Leigh, employing local sewing machinists to keep up with demand. Husband John Wright, a graphic designer, works on the branding, website, and packaging side of things. Fabrics, trims, and packaging materials are sourced from New Zealand companies. “Making the product here in New Zealand is really important to us, as it creates jobs

and keeps the manufacturing skills alive, as well as supporting other New Zealand businesses.” Holly says she hopes Aku will open up discussions on menstrual health and wellbeing. "Once people start being open about menstruation, and stop the negative period stigma, they can share their experiences and make better choices on what products to use for themselves and their teens. To get messages saying I've changed how someone felt about their period is so amazing! I'm so happy to support menstruators to make the best choices for their bodies and the health of the planet." Optimise Your Health Going Into Winter The key to good health over winter is strong immunity. If there’s one thing Covid-19 has shown us, it’s the importance of an immune system in tip top shape (and hand washing)!

Cold and flu viruses really flourish in winter. With no known cure, your best defence is a strong immune system that recognises these nasties as invaders and takes them on. The outcome of that battle determines if you get sick, how bad you feel and how long it takes to recover.

What’s the best way to boost my immune system? Sleep and a healthy diet are the best ways of maintaining strong immunity. However, if your lifestyle means you don’t eat or sleep well, or you do but are still prone to catch everything going, then it’s time to invest in extra help.

Vitamin C and Zinc While we know that Vitamin C is essential to help tackle winter bugs, Zinc is often overlooked. An essential mineral, studies have connected Zinc with faster recovery from winter ills and chills.

Elderberries, Echinacea and Olive Leaf Various parts of these plants have been used for immune health for centuries. Modern science has delved deeper into their therapeutic properties, producing compelling research connecting their use with healthy white blood cells, the body’s natural defence against invaders. Harker Herbals’ new range of Vitamin C syrups offers a delicious way to get the best of these immune boosting superstars. Choose from a

Day Till Dawn Waipu couple Annika Fyfe and Stephen Abercrombie have released their own brand of environmentally conscious pyjamas, combining quirky prints with enviable comfort.

With a two-month-old baby, the country in lockdown and a global recession looming, starting a new business would be far from most people’s minds. But, for Annika Fyfe and Stephen Abercrombie, this was the perfect storm that drove them to launch pyjama company ‘Day Till Dawn’.

sets, but there was very little in between.” Day Till Dawn was designed to be good quality, with fun, quirky prints that would appeal to young adults. The first print is by Waipu tattooist Corey McKeown and the plan is to work with different local artists as more collections are added.

“Moving from Auckland to Waipu was something we had been talking about for a few years,” Annika explains, “but finding out we were expecting pushed us to finally make the move.” Emotionally it was a no-brainer, but practically it was a harder decision. “With a background in advertising it was going to be hard to find work outside of a major centre, so I needed to create something for myself.”

Sustainability was a priority from the outset. “Like a lot of people, we’re becoming increasingly conscious of the impact overconsumption has on the environment and society. With fast fashion there are some pretty atrocious conditions that people are forced to work in to keep costs down.” Day Till Dawn pyjamas are made from organic cotton that is grown on small-scale, sustainable farms. They’re produced in Indian fair-trade factories, where workers are paid a living wage and safety is regularly audited.

The idea to launch a line of pyjamas came from Steve’s own hunt for a set, “We found there were lots of brands offering high-end, sophisticated pyjamas, or cheap and childish

The first shipment arrived around the time the baby was due, so the launch was originally

put on hold. “When lockdown was announced we thought it’d be a good chance to hunker down and have some family time. But then we started reading about huge increases in pyjama sales, so we knew we had to jump!” The effects of the inevitable recession remain to be seen, but Annika and Steve are optimistic, “With people spending more time at home, a fun set of pyjamas is a little luxury they can treat themselves to. We have already seen a surge of support for New Zealand business which is awesome. Hopefully this will extend to fair-trade, so we can help developing nations get back on their feet too”.
