GREEN, WITH ENVY Matakana homeware store Green with Envy, has taken a top prize for Retail Excellence, at the International Homeware Association’s Global Innovation Awards (GIA) in Chicago last month. Green with Envy’s founder Nicole Ward was flown to the US for the glittering awards ceremony. "We were competing with Amazon USA, big international department stores, and a huge retail chain," said Nicole. "I didn’t think that we would be a contender. It was a David and Goliath moment." At the time of life when most of us would be slowing down, motor racing enthusiast and Matakana local, Warwick Mortimer has found another gear.

legendary Kiwi racer, Bruce McLaren, takes pride of place. Stabling 850 horses in the mighty 8-litre Chevrolet engine, means the car is staggeringly wide when viewed up close.

being rebuilt both here, and in Europe. Warwick ensures that they can all roar to life, as they did on the start line, thirty, forty or even fifty years ago.

Warwick plans to compete in one of the worlds most famous and gruelling endurance races; the Le Mans Classic. As if that wasn’t enough, he has also opened a museum in celebration of New Zealand motorsport.

Next to the Mclaren sits a Surtees TS5 F5000 single-seater. Sadly, John Surtees died in March, but he remains the only man to win World Championships on both two and four wheels. American actor, James Garner commissioned the car from Surtees for a new racing series in 1969. Garner, the star of Grand Prix, fancied himself as a real-life racer. According to Warwick, he wasn’t half bad…for an actor.

The Mortimer family’s love of motorsport started in the 1930s. Warwick’s dad, Neil, was a motorcycle racer. After the Second World War he switched to cars. Neil made sure his son and grandsons were brought up on a heady, octane fuelled mix, of dirt bikes and go-karts.

“Kiwis have achieved a lot over the years and I wanted to share my collection. It’s not open to the public, but if clubs or individuals would like to have a look they can contact me via Facebook,” Warwick says. The museum is part of a new, purpose built, 3000 square metre, racing workshop facility on Takatu Road. A 1971 M8F Can-Am, from

Warwick’s son Andre won this year’s BMW Race Driver Series. He received a standing ovation during the season closer at Pukekohe, after powering the M3 GTR past the entire field by lap eight. Impressive, particularly considering he had an eighty second handicap deficit.

Proud dad Warwick is definitely a product from the old school and worries about a generation brought up on i-Pads. “Kids won’t have the tools to deal with life's challenges. You have to do the hard-yards, get dirty and be roughed up a bit,” he says. Warwick knows about doing the hard-yards. His work ethic and business acumen has enabled him to indulge his passion for motorsport. Selling his water bottling business in 2008 also helped bankroll his own Matakana based, racing team. Warwick uses his financial freedom to give emerging drivers like this year’s BMW E30 champion, Matt Griffin, what he calls; ‘a handup not a hand-out.’ In Matt’s case that means supplying the race car for the entire season.

The Mortimer team will be heading to the Grand Circuit in July next year to race in front of more than one hundred thousand spectators in the Le Mans Classic Series. The car Warwick and Andre will be driving was Mazda’s first prototype for Le Mans, built in 1984. The twin turbo 13B rotary, develops 500-horse power, but managed just 153 laps at Fuji before blowing a turbo. The car is currently in pieces at Takatu. Warwick's two mechanical geniuses are attempting to get it ready for the 500 kilometre Le Mans Classic race. “It’s the ultimate test for cars and drivers, and mechanical reliability is absolutely crucial. Hopefully we will get to create some more motor racing history.” www.facebook.com/mortimermotorsportsltd

Lachie McLean reckons the cows would dry up if he sung in the milking shed. That’s not to say classical music doesn’t blare out. Theatre runs in his blood, but he leaves the crooning to his talented casts. It’s hard to know whether he’s just being modest, or if it’s true. Dating back to 1976, Lachie has produced and directed a string of successful musicals, theatre and variety shows, yet he’s very low-key and humble about his contributions. Maybe that’s typical of a grounded man of the land, after all Lachie is first and foremost a dairy farmer from Waipu. The blend ain’t typical. Dairy farmer’s don gumboots and a whistle at best, and the only stage they usually talk about is when to dry off the girls for winter. But Lachie found his theatre feet from a very young age thanks to a love of performing arts on his mother’s side of the family. Born in Whangarei in 1952, Lachie studied at Auckland’s Kings College where he crammed in as much performance as possible. Faced with returning to rural life, Lachie decided to explore a director’s gap at Otamatea Repertory Theatre. Bringing the house down in the late 1970’s with, Where’s Charley? Lachie hasn’t stopped… Jekyll and Hyde, Cats, Lés Miserable, Miss Saigon – to name just a few. “Theatre is my escape, farming is my reality,” Lachie says. “I draw on the two because they complement each other. Not long ago we amalgamated a family farm and when people management was needed, directing skills took centre stage.” The outdoor pageant to celebrate 150 years of Scottish/Nova Scotian settlement in Waipu was an ambitious undertaking. Co-writing the piece over three years and directing the drama on the Waipu River Bank in 2003 was an unforgettable experience for Lachie. A healthy production budget of around $200,000 for the two-night event allowed him to bring the drama to life. It was a spectacle of lights, sound and visual technology. “The Waipu Museum Board was gutsy in allowing me to run with my dream. Basically they just let me get on with it.” Three years later Lachie received a Civic Award for services to theatre.

Winter on the farm is approaching, milking has paused but Lachie has not. He’s hitting the stage again with the global extravaganza, Mamma Mia! Based on the songs of ABBA, there will be 21 performances, from June 16 through to July 8, at Forum North in Whangarei. It’s a big commitment for the voluntary cast, orchestra and support crew, but many of them are the same ‘dream team’ Lachie started with 30 years ago. Mamma Mia! comes with a strict production guide from the playwrights, former band member Bjorn Ulvaeus and British writer Catherine Johnson. Brand ABBA means big bucks and big budgets. Set standards, designed by Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop are intense, and the result aims to rival any Broadway show. When a shipping container finally arrived with all the glitzy costumes, cast and crew waited in eager anticipation. The huge metal doors swung open to reveal… an empty container. Lachie has had a few such glitches, but is confident he’s ironed out the creases and the show will be a hit. “Those infectious pop tunes are actually trickier than you’d think, with loads of backstage harmonies. It’s an intimate show especially in the Bougainville Theatre, which only seats 350. The audience will be drawn in, I’ve used every inch of space." Opposite Page: Lachie on his farm. For locals and visitors alike, Sculptureum along Omaha Flats Road has long been a source of mystery and speculation. The large black metal gates held back scores of tight-lipped workers every morning. Electric fences and ‘Private Property’ signs left no doubt that for those of us without a golden ticket, entry to Sculptureum was absolutely forbidden. The Sculptureum gates are now open for visitors, and parallels with Roald Dahl’s magical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remain. Owner, Anthony Grant could well be the sweet visionary that he believes the art world is in dire need of. Imagine a plethora of scrumdilddlyumptious visual delights, inspirational quotes about life's conundrums, and rarely seen exotic birds. Sculptureum enthuses visitors with an almost childlike love for creativity and beauty. The project has taken Anthony twelve years, almost 10-million dollars and the unwavering support of his wife Sandra. “I want to enrich people's lives and inspire them to make their own environments more interesting,” Anthony says.

Dressed in a long trench coat and stylish trilby, Anthony, a successful lawyer, greets me warmly on a perfect autumnal day and the whirlwind tour of Sculptureum begins. We start at the ‘Garden of Creative Diversity’; the tantalising taster I view every day, to and from Omaha Beach. Anthony tells me it would take at least two hours to see everything, so we need to hurry, but unlike Dahl’s equally brilliant Wonka, Anthony assures me I am welcome back anytime. The garden is an absolute marvel, open your eyes and mind to the concept that art and beauty are omnipresent. Ancient rocks from Puhipuhi, Northland illustrate Mother Nature’s works. Household buckets have been repurposed to create an enormous dandelion. A behemoth driftwood whale leaps gracefully from a sea of broken glass and ‘Rabbiton’ is home to real Flemish giants. Everything in the garden has a descriptor written by Anthony. These along with quotes from historical figures offer an insight into his philosophy. I start to ask questions I need answered in order to write this piece.

“We haven’t got time for that! Read this,” Anthony replies, handing me his self-penned book; The Sculptureum Story. It dawns on me that Anthony is having too much fun watching my reaction to his magnum opus, to risk spoiling it with mundane questions. “I got another laugh out of you and another wow! When was the last time you laughed or said wow in an art gallery?” he says, grinning widely. Reaction is all-important to Anthony, he is using art to create a theatrical experience. Some would say the fine-art world prefers to pretend its value is intrinsically superior, far beyond the grubby necessities of commercialisation. Anthony has no such hypocrisy. “If you like it, if it brings you joy, if it moves and inspires you then that’s the most important thing, but I also need to make art pay,” Anthony says. The 25-hectare site includes a café, which is open to the public, a bar, restaurant, vineyard and conference centre. Andrew promises five star quality dining accompanied by a glass of his award winning wine. Continued...

The Galleries open with colourful glass works and morph through to the animal room. A life size rhino with hessian coffee sack hide stares menacingly, whilst birds made from silver cutlery look ready to strut around. The gallery eventually leads out to another garden full of delights for the young, and young at heart. “As children we are all creative, but then we stop. Art is fun and it should continue to enrich our lives,” Anthony says. The classical garden offers a taste of European culture. Contemporary works created from bike helmets, cable ties and milk bottles take on bedazzling new lives. Cezanne, Matisse, Chagall and Picasso also grace the gallery walls. Tickets for the ‘Garden of Creative Diversity’ cost $25 for adults and $12 for children. The separate Galleries and Closed Gardens house a myriad of other works including the most expensive piece, a huge glass ‘chandelier’ by American glass artist Dale Chihuly. WINTER ESCAPE

RIVERSIDE 10TH ANNIVERSARY Riverside Accommodation in Matakana has a distinctly different feel than your average run-ofthe mill weekend getaway. Imagine a private bure-style resort in Fiji, with stunning views worthy of the Bay of Islands, then add an architect’s modern take on the quintessential kiwi bach. Hold that thought. Now Matakana-ise it with forty acres of rolling countryside, chardonnay vines, olive groves, tennis court, heated swimming pool and a pontoon stretching out over the river. “There’s really nowhere else quite like it, especially so close to Auckland, and that’s part of the charm,” Manager, Michael Bolton says. Riverside celebrated their tenth anniversary last month. Michael has been running the accommodation and conference venue for the last five years. In 2009 he was a guest and ended his weekend-break having purchased a nearby property. “I’m very much like our guests. Once you discover this area you just have to keep coming back.” What makes Riverside different is that all 17 baches are individually owned, but rented out all year round. Michael says they are booked almost every weekend throughout the year, mostly with visitors from Auckland.

At Plume we believe a great meal is not just about the food and wine, we believe it is a complete sensory experience.

“The attraction in summer is obvious, but during winter our guests tend to shop at the markets, lunch at a vineyard, visit the local attractions, and then snuggle up by the fire and watch the rugby." Renowned New Zealand firm Architectus, made clever use of the 70 square-meters in each bach. Creating an open plan living area with two bedrooms and good flow to the outside decks and gardens. A separate sleep-out with two single beds is perfect for families with children. Prices start at $250 per-night for a couple. Having so few baches over such a large area, gathered in little clusters of four or five, ensures privacy. “We also have families that book all the baches in one cluster and holiday together. There is plenty of space for the kids. Many people come back regularly and although they might not own the property, there is definitely the feeling that it is their bach.” Michael left the city, and a career in marketing and advertising behind in 2012, but running Riverside keeps him busy. He says the Conference lodge is frequented by the who’s who of New Zealand business managers and company boards. “Our motto is relax, retreat, restore. I’m convinced our guests look five years younger after a couple of nights at Riverside!” 170 Green Rd, Laly Haddon Place, Matakana www.riversidematakana.co.nz

Margaret ‘Margie’ Hetherington is celebrating 35-years of The Red Barn Antiques and Collectables this month. Amongst the old printers trays, chandeliers, farming implements and furniture hangs a small framed certificate. It’s stamped with the date June 4, 1982, and it’s Margie’s second-hand dealers license. “This all came about by accident” Margie says leaning on a beautiful colonial era kauri dressing table. “I restored a few things, furniture mostly, and then people started to bring things for me to take a look at.” Margie exudes warmth, a dash of mischief and a touch of glamour. She shows me around the barn, which has similar attributes. There’s a lighting area, lace room, and a shabbychic section. She points out the lace labels she sells on behalf of her friend, Donelle. Margie assures me that despite shabby chic being a best seller; she is very selective before getting out the paintbrush. Stripping, restoring and polishing native timbers back to their original rich lustre is Margie's passion. She has seen the fickle home decor trends wax and wane over the years, and is staggered by how inexpensive antique furniture is. Looking around at the quality of materials and workmanship in the barn, it’s easy to see why.

20

“Fashion is a rollercoaster. It’s all very minimalistic and very white at the moment, but everyone needs a bit of colourful clutter.” Some of Margie’s ‘clutter’ is very much in vogue. She recently sold a large collection of vintage biscuit tins to an interior designer for a swanky new café in Auckland. “I told her they were rusty, but that’s exactly what she wanted. I think sometimes the more rustic it is the better it is!” The Matakana Coast is now punctuated with establishments selling collectibles, but when Margie and her late husband Rob, ‘emigrated’ from the North Shore in 1976 it was a very different story. They purchased 72-acres and a dilapidated house. The house was in such bad shape Rob was hoping it would be demolished. Margie on the other hand wanted it restored back to its former glory. Needless to say, it was restored. The barn that now houses Margie’s treasure trove was an old hayshed, trucked up from the back of the farm. It quickly took on a new purpose as Rob went about making repairs and Margie applied the finishing touches to the growing array of antiques and collectables. “I still have customers that visit me from back then. It’s all been built on word-of-mouth.” Margie, who is now a great-grandmother, doesn’t have any grand plans to celebrate the thirty five year milestone. “Every day is a celebration to me because I love what I do,” she says, shutting the gate and waving goodbye to the last customer of the day. 190 Matakana Road, Warkworth 09 425 8960

WINTER WARMING WINES As the chaos of the summer season fades, and the last of the 2017 wines finish ferment and are packed down to mature through winter, now is the perfect time to explore the Matakana wine region. Small, with a maritime climate, a diversity of clay based soils, and an eclectic mix of passionate personalities, Matakana is unique, easy to explore, and full of vinous treasures to be discovered. From beginnings focused on the classic Bordeaux style blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. The wine region has no single signature variety and a veritable kaleidoscope of styles has emerged. The versatility of the soils, and the passions of the local winegrowers can be found in a range of wines that span French, Italian, and Spanish origins. SIMON

DEVITT

PHOTOGRAPHER

When Amy and Simon brought the Black and White Barn two years ago it was a bold move. The couple had worked hard to build their own catering company in Parnell, but when it came to buying a family home they wanted the lifestyle that Matakana has to offer, and more bang for their buck than central Auckland. Fast-forward two years; Simon still commutes four days per week. Little Isabelle is now three and has a baby brother, nine-month-old Theo. “Our lives are busy, but it was a gut feeling from the moment I walked in and I’m so glad we made the move,” Amy says. She puts some of their success down to the design of the house. A separate wing houses two beautiful rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Guests can choose from The White Suite, The Black Suite, or take them both as The Black and White Cottage. Amy says they always have a steady stream of paying guests through summer and winter. Walking distance to the village is a huge bonus, particularly on busy market days, or after sampling a few of the local wines. The house was designed by local architects Pyramids and built by Warkworth Construction. The guest accommodation has a separate entranceway, patio area and manicured lawn space. A thorough job of soundproofing maintains the peace and tranquillity.

30

The family home has internal access to service the guest accommodation through a very useful butlers pantry. The kitchen area opens onto a lounge with log fireplace and annexes through to another lounge with the master bedroom tucked away between the two. Having lived in the home and tested its functionality for family life and as a business, Amy sums up the best aspects of the design. “I love the flow, it’s all open, but at the same time separate. I can keep an eye on the kids, but they have their own space. We had the entire family here for Christmas; with eight kids and the house just seemed to absorb everyone." Families that host over the Christmas period will understand just how important clever the design is to achieve that magnificent feat. The pine board and batten cladding on the barn style exterior morphs into a very modern interior. Blending rustic with contemporary, yin and yang, light and airy with dark and cosy and of course, black and white. So, what is it with the black and white theme? “I’ve always had a thing for black and white, it’s hard to explain, but I like contrast and I think the way we dress our homes is an interpretation of ourselves.” The family dogs, Chloe and Baxter have been sleeping but raise an eyebrow at this point. They are of course, black and white, and probably want to take credit for the design inspiration. Like everything in the home they look cozy and laid back. The fact that this is even possible when using two starkly contrasting colours is a credit to Amy’s design prowess. A narrow stairway leads upstairs to the children's rooms and a feeling of barns and hay lofts springs to mind. As a kid it would have been your dream bedroom, up in the attic well away from mum and dad. This is a place to play after bedtime while looking out across the fields at the visitors making their way back along Matakana Road. It has started to rain and leaving the black and white inner sanctum seems like such a drag. “My guests come back time and time again, and say things like: ‘We are just popping to the village and then we’ll walk back home later,’ home is obviously a feeling not just a place." www.blackandwhitebarn.co.nz

Take a clapped out $300 car with a measly one-litre engine, add two plucky youngsters, then throw them into a 20,000km drive from London to Russia. What do you have? The Mongol Rally of course! It sounds like complete madness and will take fierce determination, but it’s all in the name of charity. Mangawhai couple Emma Kent and Corey Radford, are turning their grief following the suicide of two close friends into something positive. They’re out to raise cash for the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ). The local recreational area needs a further $800,000 to complete the skate park, outdoor fitness area, three BMX tracks, a sound shell for outdoor events and the sports field. While the car rally is impressive enough, Emma and Corey’s campaign will also include more traditional ways to generate a buck; a local school disco and mufti day, skating competition, fun-run, pub quiz and the list keeps growing. The couple decided MAZ was a worthy project for their fundraising endeavours. “The park is a place where community gather and no one needs to feel alone, it stands for wellbeing and empowering youth,” Emma says. The gut-wrenching loss of mates has made them determined to do something proactive within their community and hopefully prevent it from happening to others. We salute their fortitude. www.give4maz.co.nz givealittle.co.nz/cause/madmaz

Mangawhai Rocks in many ways, but #Mangawhairocks is adding some Rolling Stones with an unusual treasure hunt. It’s all about creating and hiding art rocks to surprise and delight others who find them. It’s also about exploring nature with family and friends, ditching the iPad and getting outside. Mangawhai has taken up the craze wholeheartedly thanks to Sarah Weber. “When our friends went rock hunting, I thought hmmm ok (eye roll), but gosh it’s fun and so addictive,” Sarah says. “There’s a sense of giving back and a sense of freedom. I posted a note on our local Facebook page to ask if I had been hiding under a rock, or was this craze not here yet? The response was great.” It’s simple, collect or buy river stones, make sure they’re dry and then unleash your creative flair. You can paint to a specific theme or just freestyle it. Include your name, year and #Mangawhairocks on the back. Spray a clear sealer over them, photograph your work and post it to the dedicated Facebook page. Once all that’s done you can go outside and hide them, but be sure to report back on Facebook and share the location plus a couple of hints. www.facebook/mangawhairocks

TRACEY MARTIN, LIST MP BASED IN RODNEY Since Tracey Martin was first elected as a New Zealand First List MP based in Rodney, she has been surprised by how few New Zealanders know about the “job” of their Member of Parliament. In a recent interview she says "I found it was easiest to explain it as the four Ps. Party, Parliament, Policy and People". But it is the “People” that she wants to focus on. As a stay-at-home parent, involved in many volunteer community roles for fifteen years prior to being elected to Parliament in 2011, it is the “people part” of the job that she believes to be the most important. "My staff and I feel so strongly about this role that we have made this our number one Key Performance Indicator." Tracey continues "We judge our success on the number of New Zealanders we can help in the time we have. Its purpose is to disseminate information and to help me, as a Member of Parliament, assist Rodney residents with challenges they are having with government departments such as Work and Income, ACC, CYFs, Inland Revenue and Immigration NZ." Both Tracey and her team are proud that in the last two years alone, well over a hundred Rodney locals, through her office, have been able to gain predominantly positive outcomes from interventions made on their behalf. The team in Wellington, based in Bowen House, have also been successful in gaining positive outcomes for Kiwis who have contacted them with multiple and varied requests. From families of students needing special education support to individuals and businesses needing better access to broadband, as well as organising delegations from other nations to visit the Rodney area in our efforts to encourage trade relationships. tracey.martinmp@parliament.govt.nz Shop 5, Riverside Arcade, Queen Street, Warkworth Open 10am to 5pm Wednesday to Friday | 09 425 7360

SNAP HAPPY AT TI POINT

At Junction Magazine, we love all things about publishing! We love how the words roll through your inner monologue as you read them on a page, how a picture can tell 1,000 stories and the way the pages feel to turn. We are working with schools across our region, to give them their own page, a little support, then let their imaginations loose to become Editors, Writers and Photographers; just like us! If your school is interested, please get in touch. hi@junctionmag.co.nz

Where can you see tortoises, frogs, tarantulas, alligators and a monkey, without driving to Auckland? The Ti Point Reptile Park. Ivan Borich has always been interested in plants and things that move. He started the park 50 years ago as a hobby and it grew into a small zoo. So, what’s it like feeding an alligator? “They’re not really dangerous as long as you use common sense,” says Ivan. “You offer food on a long stick. They snap around a bit so if your leg was there you could be in a lot of trouble.”

FUN RAIN OR SHINE AT CAMP BENTZON Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Sandspit, Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island is a great place for families and school groups. You can do archery, orienteering, confidence courses, volleyball, sailing and more.

WHAT TO DO ON WET DAYS Feeling “Arggg!” with cabin fever and wishing you could get out and about? We asked Matakana School students what they like to do on wet days. If your parents are up for it, try one of the cafés around town. Did we mention the cinemas? Be sure to come and watch a movie in its plush seats! Try puddle stomping... come on parents we know you want to! Gather autumn leaves and get creative with arts and crafts. Jump into a pile of duvets, make a blanket hut, or have a card or board game marathon!

“Kids have a sense of freedom here”, says Peter Hyde, who manages the camp with his wife Erin. “They create hardy friendships.” One of their funniest memories is when the fire alarm sounded while people were in the showers. One boy lost his towel and ran back nude! Peter and Erin love “working with kids who are scared but willing to give it a shot.”

DELICIOUS DINING FOR KIDS AT BRICK BAY Brick Bay is a beautiful, peaceful place with a restaurant called The Glasshouse Kitchen and a wonderful sculpture trail. Here’s why we think it’s a great spot to take kids: "When I’m there I smell delicious. I see delicious. I taste delicious" – Lily "I love everything - the customer service is really nice and the view of the lake is wonderful" - Olesya "Brick Bay is a quality restaurant your family will love. I loved the food and lightening quick service" - Sasha "I liked all the sculptures on the trail. The kids’ menu has lots of choices, with healthy ones to please your mum and dad, plus delicious desserts and drinks" - Liam I enjoyed the trail. It was super quiet and the sculptures were cool" - Nika

IAN ANDERSON WORDS

“Have you ever tried skydiving? You should. It’s an absolute sensory overload! I want my work to be like that,” Ian Anderson says, as he puts the ‘billy’ on at his studio in Warkworth. Originally from Western Australia, Ian has been living in New Zealand since the 1970s. “At that time you could jump on the boat and easily pop across to meet the cuzzies.” Back then Ian was a product of the hippy counterculture and fled to New Zealand to escape

makes me feel like a fine artist and I have a passion to be a genuine oil painter in the tradition of the great masters.”

“I went back and sorted it all out, but at the time I was an angry young man searching for meaning,” Ian says.

Ian decided to become a full-time artist last year and transformed his second story office, which overlooks the Mahurangi River dam and bridge in Warkworth, into a gallery and studio. His latest piece is entitled, It’s a Rich Life, and contains Aboriginal, Maori and Native American influences. It hints at the divine and pays homage to Salvador

Ian is now an award winning photographer and graphic designer, but it is oil painting that he finds most satisfying. “I’m a multi-medium artist, but working in oils

Dali. Dali is one of Ian’s heroes, along with Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Saint Francis of Assisi. Like many of us on the Matakana Coast Ian is not overly fond of wearing shoes, apparently neither was Saint Francis. Ian has used indigenous symbolism because of its primary function to convey meaning and a pictorial narrative. His own story of spiritual enlightenment and his Christian faith forms the heart of much of his work. He is currently gaining a foothold in the lucrative American market, where his work is reproduced on an array of different mediums including shower curtains. Ian draws inspiration from nature, in particular birdlife, and has recently returned from Tiritiri Matangi. He was grateful for a cyclone that left him stranded on the island for an extra three days. He used the time to absorb the islands natural wonders and has already started work on a painting, and a coffee table book based on his experience. “My gift is to get people to see past the ordinary and into the extraordinary.” www.ianandersonfineartgallery.com

REVIEW

BOOK REVIEW

THE LADY IN GOLD BY ANNE MARIE O’CONNOR The heart-breaking story of the Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece – the breath-taking portrait of the Viennese Jewish socialite Adele Bloch-Bauer. This celebrated and much loved family portrait was stolen by the Nazis during World War 2 and subsequently became the subject of a decade long dispute between the heirs in America and the Austrian government. The movie The Lady in Gold is based on this book.

ISLAND HOME: A LANDSCAPE MEMOIR BY TIM WINTON Island Home is Winton’s love letter to the vast sprawling land of Australia that has spawned all of his writing. The natural world is as much a living presence as any character in Winton’s writing. This book is a passionate exhortation for all of us to look around and feel the ground beneath our feet, no matter where we live.

PERSEPOLIS BY SALLY BUTCHER This is a fabulous cookbook to take on your weekend getaway. It is full of luscious recipes to drool over and perhaps make. It is full of Middle Eastern inspired vegetarian dishes with taking you from Breaking Fast through to Puddings and Sweet Treats for after dinner and everything in between.

MASTER CRAFTSMAN

CONRAD ROBERTSON Conrad Robertson comes from a long line of master boat-builders, which stems back to the Lidgard Brothers Auckland boat yard in the 1930s. “Traditional boat-building is an art form,” Conrad says. “My father Chris Robertson was a well-known boat-builder and designer. I am a third generation boat builder and my son Drew is carrying on the family tradition into the fourth generation.” In 1981 Chris Robertson set up his own business in Alnwick Street, next to the Mahurangi River in Warkworth. Thirty-six years on the firm is still going strong with Conrad at the helm. Things have certainly changed since he first picked up the tools as a 16-year-old apprentice. There are more production boats being brought into New Zealand now and that means less custom boats are being built. Conrad works with an array of construction materials that require an equally diverse range of skills. Over the years, he has worked on an eclectic mix of projects and loves the variety that being a master boatbuilder offers. “A very memorable boat building project for us was Te Ariki Nui, a 52-foot game fishing boat which was based in Russell for years and did a lot of offshore travelling to the Pacific Islands. We also did the repair work on the American entry for the thirtieth America's Cup in Auckland, after it snapped in half. We were on an extremely tight deadline for that job!” www.robertsonboats.com

HAPPENINGS

MIDLIFE COURAGE Imagine a whole weekend dedicated solely to you. After a lifetime of being all things to all people, how about giving yourself permission to reconnect with yourself? Imagine three days at a luxurious lodge close to home, snuggled up next to a toasty open fire, sipping a rich red and sharing time with other supportive and like-minded women. Spend the afternoon relaxing in a hot lavenderscented spa bath savouring one of those many novels you intended to read, and enjoying some time-out. Allow yourself some space to breathe, explore the ‘where to/what next/who am I now’? Sure, you think of hubby, your kids, your parents. Yes, you have a busy career. Too many commitments, hundreds of items on your to-do list. But what does it profit a woman to give everything of herself and yet so little to herself. Switch off the computer, don’t answer that phone call, leave the endless errands and lists ... gift yourself just three days to recharge. "When women gather, there is love, camaraderie, stories to share and yes, big glorious belly laughs." Drawing on my naturopathy and life-coaching experiences with midlife women, I've tailored this long weekend especially for you. There will be lots of talking, some of it by me and some of it by you - and lots of it together. If you need to clear your mind and start dreaming of some new possibilities, then this retreat is for you. Women who attended the retreat last year said they felt remarkable when they left. Are you ready? www.midlifecourage.co.nz
