SPOTLIGHT

8 WIRED – PLAYING THEIR CARDS RIGHT WORDS

For Søren and Monique Eriksen of 8 Wired brewery, few things go together like beer and poker. The couple were both students when they met at a charity fundraiser in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Søren who hails from Denmark, was an intern for the Danish embassy, and supporting himself through university by playing cards online. Monique was visiting her parents in the city where she’d spent some of her teenage years. Two years of long distance love ensued, before they reunited in Perth, Australia. One Christmas, Monique gave Søren a home brew kit. His first beers were ‘pretty awful’, but he kept messing about and before long, his hobby had become an obsession. Fast forward a few years, and the couple were settled in Auckland. Monique was working as a physiotherapist, while Søren was a biochemist, but the beer kept calling. So in 2008 they moved

to Blenheim, where Søren took a role as brewer with Renaissance Brewing. Initially they had thoughts of a brewpub by the sea, but within a few months Søren was contract brewing his own beers on Renaissance premises and they decided to found their own brewery. The only problem was funding. ‘Contract brewing was great because we didn’t have a lot of capital outlay, but we needed cash flow for ingredients and bottles,’ says Søren. That’s where the poker comes in. All those hours playing cards as a student paid off when Søren took the New Zealand National Poker Championship title two years running, winning enough to get 8 Wired off the ground. 8 Wired launched in 2009 with a brown ale, ‘to prove brown beer doesn’t have to be boring’. Within 12 months, the couple were exporting to three countries – and they still hadn’t quit their day jobs.

In 2011, 8 Wired became the first contract brewery to claim the coveted Champion Brewery title at the Brewers Guild Awards. ‘By then we were selling as much beer as we could make,’ said Søren. Their brand is both a tribute to the Kiwi number 8 wire tradition, and a nod to Søren’s ingenuity. ‘We try to push the boundaries and make interesting flavourful beers,’ he says. Søren’s interest in experimentation led him to try barrel ageing, a traditional method of brewing beer currently undergoing a revival on the craft beer scene. Beer is aged in old and funky wine barrels for two to three years to produce a ‘sour beer’ infused with the flavours of the wood and whatever once occupied the barrel. The result is closer to wine or cider than beer-asyou-know-it. Fruits can be added to create limited edition beers like Snake Charmer, infused with blackcurrant, or the popular Wild Feijoa Sour Ale.

‘Every vintage is different,’ says Monique. Søren reckons 8 Wired has the largest barrel ageing operation in the Southern Hemisphere. ‘We have more beer in wood than stainless, but barrel ageing is still less than ten percent of what we produce.’ Barrel-aged beers get better with age, so they’re perfect for 8 Wired’s growing export trade. You’ll now find their beers in every continent except Africa. Yes, they even export to Antarctica (though questions regarding the identity of said importer are met with a poker face.) In 2013, the couple, their children Mia and Finn, and 200-odd barrels moved north to establish the 8 Wired brewery in Warkworth. ‘We looked for somewhere near the beach and port, where we could be happy long term,’ says Monique. ‘We love this community, there are so many likeminded people and business owners.’ That community came to the fore in 2015, when a freak accident at 8 Wired saw two brewers badly scalded by a high pressure spout of boiling beer. Both men faced an extensive recovery. ‘That was a tough time. There was nothing anyone could have done differently, but it made me question why we are doing this,’ says Monique. ‘Everyone was really supportive, both locally and in our industry. We realised they’re not just competitors, there’s a whole beer family here and overseas.’ As for the future? They’ve launched an internet TV show, The Barrel Programme, for ‘a bit of fun’, and are focused on strategically growing their exports, particularly in China, where there is a growing market of discerning beer drinkers. Plans are afoot for a barrel hall and tasting room a short stroll from Matakana Village - but as for when, they’re keeping their cards close to their chests. ‘We’ll wait until we feel really passionate about making it happen.’

PROFILE

BERNADETTE HOGG

A true foodie, Bernadette Hogg is living the dream on her five acre lifestyle property on the Glen Eden River with her husband, two dogs, sheep, vegetable garden and orchard. Bernadette has become very popular through her delicious recipes in both NZ House & Garden and Food Magazine. “I became involved in food writing when NZ House and Garden Magazine first launched. Food writer and friend Annabelle White needed an assistant, so I’d help her out,” says Bernadette. Bernadette and her family moved up to the beautiful Matakana region in the year 2000. She wanted a non-city life where her three children could grow up fishing, hunting, surfing, swimming and go to school all very close to home. “One of my favourite things about the Matakana area is the space. The availability of fresh produce, interesting food producers and talented cooks all add to my love of living in Matakana,” says Bernadette. Food is more than just a job, it’s in Bernadette’s genes. Her father was a baker, mother a pastry chef and food an expression of their family identity. “My food writing started with just the odd recipe and styling job for the magazines, then progressed to photographers asking me to

style advertising shoots,” says Bernadette. She also had a five year stint as Food Editor of Your Home & Garden Magazine and many years as a contributing writer to Food Magazine. Bernadette never switches off when it comes to food, she writes notes on her phone that are full of ideas she has seen or tasted, ready for the next recipe creation. Bernadette has a background in advertising, which when combined with her foodie nature might just be the explanation behind her unique ability to trigger your taste buds and draw you in with visual appeal. As it turned out, Bernadette had quite the flair for styling and an eye for the unique and quirky. “The photographers I work with are always blown away by my props department. I see things like the back of an old discarded sign as the perfect backing for a food shoot,” says Bernadette. When Bernadette had her third child, it was time to leave the advertising and the nine-to-five life behind. The pace and opportunities in the Matakana region allowed Bernadette to focus on her family, writing and styling. “Helping on my friend’s food shoots worked well with young children, and when my recipe writing took off, the

With food and fresh produce a central theme of the Matakana and surrounding areas, food not only connects family around here, it also connects and creates great friendships. Bernadette, through her constant quest for hard to find produce and garnishes, met Marie, close friend and owner of Quail Farm, because of her ever reliable fruit and veg stall. Then a few years ago they teamed up to create ‘Quail Farm Collectables’, combining their different styles but keen eyes and nous for finding all things quirky and cool. Visiting Quail Farm Collectables is a must when visiting the area! As Bernadette says, “neither of us can leave things the same for long. We meet up once a week and change the shop adding any new goodies we have found, as it turns out people love it! Some only popping in for a look but very few leave empty handed.” Open Friday-Sunday, 11am-3pm. 279 Omaha Flats Road, Omaha www.facebook.com/quailfarmcollectables

TUATUA HOUSE WORDS

Appearances can be deceiving, as the old saying goes. No more so than with Tuatua House in Omaha.

JOHN

FERGUSON

number of challenges. “You’ve got the environmental ones, with the wind coming in from multiple directions which you have to consider,” Guthrie explains “and being a beachfront lot, there is a public walkway that runs through the sand dune area between the site and the beach, so you’ve got a reverse privacy problem with pedestrians – who are looking back at the houses – between you and your view.”

The deceptively bare, entry façade gives no clues to what a visitor can expect to find when they enter. Once inside, this luxurious holiday home opens up into a spacious, entertainer’s paradise. It offers sumptuous sea views from Little Barrier Island to the Takatu Peninsula, as well as a pool and private courtyard area. Mike and Delys Thornton have now spent three Christmases at Tuatua House and couldn’t be happier with their home away from home. They, and their three children, had previously owned a house in the same street in Omaha, but it offered only limited sea views, so when a rare beachfront section came onto the market, they leapt at the opportunity to buy it.

Mike and Delys also wanted it to stand out from other properties at the popular beachside destination. “We started with a blank canvas,” Mike says. “We wanted it to be different from other houses in Omaha. I don’t think we changed anything during the design process – we nailed it all down from the start.”

“We wanted to move to get the sea view,” Mike says. “We really wanted to build a family beach house that we could utilise the view, keep us out of the wind and maximise the amount of sun in the afternoon.”

The final design provides a main living area situated at the north end of the site, which opens out onto a westward-facing lawn and pool courtyard. A children’s wing is located at the southern end of the house, while the upper level includes two guest bedrooms as well as the master bedroom.

To realise their dream home, they turned to Auckland architect Julian Guthrie, who had designed a number of houses in the area. Although it was a relatively flat section, he says designing houses for Omaha always provides a

“From an entertaining perspective, we can open up the whole house,” Mike enthuses. “Wherever the wind is coming from, we can always use some part and it’s actually relatively quiet inside. Another thing about the house is that when you

enter the living area, you don’t see another house, whether you look left or right. We don’t feel hemmed in at all.” Tuatua House is built from bagged concrete block and cedar, with the same materials used both inside and out. Julian explains, “There is no difference in materials between the exterior and interior, so you get this continuous flow. There are a lot of random textures to it, it’s quite casual,” or as Mike puts it, “We didn’t want anything too perfect!” The interior fittings are all purpose built and very durable, while the property also accommodates a large storage space for Mike’s nine metre boat. For Julian, it was a memorable project because of the unusual combination of materials and design solutions. “We have certainly had a lot of comment about this house,” he says. Builder Ryan Bridgens, of Bridgens Construction and Design adds, “having the opportunity to build for Mike and Delys again (having also built their Auckland home), and working with Julian Guthrie on such an architectural home was a real pleasure”. As for Mike, he is delighted that their holiday home has become a popular destination for friends and family, “It’s a bit of a drop in house – and people are constantly dropping in!” www.julian-guthrie.com www.bridgens.nz/

FANTAIL, TINY HOUSE WORDS NADIA

We’re hearing the word ‘minimalism’ more and more often and father and son duo, Jim and Shane, are bringing this modern living style to the family home. Jim, a master builder with over 40 years experience, and Shane, having lived in smaller spaces himself, came up with the idea to build their own tiny house – and so ‘The Fantail’ was born! “Living tiny has yet to really catch on in New Zealand, as land owners have an issue with sharing their space. If people understood that tiny houses can help with our current housing crisis and more people open their hearts and minds to this way of life, we could have a New Zealand where everyone owns their own house, debt free!” says Shane. ‘The Fantail’ takes a lot of inspiration from the Japanese minimalist living approach, using multiple living zones within small spaces, to the greatest advantage.

“My partner and I researched this house for almost a year and came up with the design concept; she is from Japan and we both have lived in smaller spaces, so we took that on board when developing a plan,” says Shane.

modern finish. “One of my favourite elements of ‘The Fantail’ is the sense of space once inside,” says Shane. The downstairs area can be used as a bedroom or office/dining area and the upper loft is designed as a bedroom or storage zone.

Using the highest quality materials throughout and utilising every inch of space, ‘The Fantail’ has everything one would need to ensure a wonderful living experience. Jim and Shane are now selling their creation and are considering starting their own business, as more people start living small. “I would love to see more people living a life with less,” says Shane.

But wait, there’s more! The house even comes with household appliances: a convection oven, washing machine, fridge freezer, gas hob and on call, Infinity gas hot water system. As a bonus, power points have USB ports, a ceiling fan has been installed and there is plenty of hidden storage.

“Not wanting to make all decisions for the prospective owners, we designed the house with multiple living situations in mind, leaving enough room for the lucky owners to add their own unique style,” says Shane. The house is zoned into lounge, kitchen, dining, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The ceiling and floors have a natural timber feel and the light walls include striking negative detailing, giving a

THE HOUSE COMPANY

When visiting one of The House Company’s offices, one word springs to mind - Professional.

because we rely on one another to complement our skill sets.

We interviewed Isobella Menzies, the Design and Build co-ordinator for one of Rodney’s local building companies ’The House Company’. We wanted to know what it is about The House Company that makes their product stand out above the rest.

As a team we discuss everything, exchange opinions, inspire and motivate one another to ensure we deliver homes our clients love. We are effective because we know that at each stage of the process, one of us will take the lead in our area of expertise.

The House Company’s reputation has stood the test of time. What would you say contributes to this?

What makes your service different from those of your competitors?

Knowing that at each stage of the process, from site visit to design and construction, you will be dealing with an experienced, qualified team member. I think this is one of the greatest benefits in dealing with The House Company, as this creates confidence and peace of mind for our clients.

The process we follow. The House Company has the requisite knowledge and experience in design and construction. We investigate your site in the preliminary stage, collaborate with you in designing a home that meets relevant criteria, and ensure you are fully aware of the costs involved – all this before you commit and pour large amounts into your build.

Our clients notice how we make their interests our top priority by working efficiently and effectively as a team. This is how we achieve the best outcomes for all parties involved. Meeting our clients’ expectations encourages us as a team

Building a home is a serious commitment emotionally and financially, and dealing with experts benefits everyone involved. It provides our clients with good advice and, as the project progresses, a clear understanding of what’s going

20

on and what will happen next. In this way, we ensure the project achieves optimum efficiencies and delivers the greatest benefit possible for our client. With this sort of culture and mentality, word-ofmouth recommendation is one of our advantages in the market. We have a good balance of discipline, passion and creativity in our company, ensuring that we are not distracted, adhere to our timelines and perform efficiently. Who are your designers? We have a wide variety of designers available, including in-house designers and local architectural designers that we have worked with for years. Choosing the right designer for the project is a crucial step in the process; therefore, selecting a good match is based on a thorough understanding of our client’s brief, wish list and budget. Roughly 30% of our projects involve clients who already have concepts prepared and we get involved in the early stages, ensuring the budget and the details specified are aligned.

Where do your trades and contractors come from? Our suppliers, tradesmen, supervisors and contractors are all local. This means local knowledge which further marks us as leaders in our field. Not only are they familiar with council regulations and by-laws, but it’s also good to have our money stay in the local community. Do you manage the entire process? Yes, we do. We manage the process to suit our client’s needs. We are capable of managing the entire process from planning through documentation, council approvals to handing over your keys on completion of the project. Yet, we are flexible; it’s not obligatory for a client to engage us for the whole project. We work with clients who have had homes built before as well as with people who are new to the building process, especially an architecturally designed home. As mentioned earlier, a real benefit of building with us is that we are experts in our field, and we have people available to do all the work for you, stress-free. When do your clients know how much their build is going to cost? We calculate the cost straight after the preliminary design has been done, which happens once we get the concept to a stage where our clients are happy with it. We provide a full, detailed price for the build during the very early stages of the process. A project timeline is created at the point of the initial enquiry, so we are able to do the costing efficiently. The timeline of a build obviously depends on the design and location of a build, but what kind of timeline can a client of yours expect? Our build timeline varies from 6 months for a single level 3-5 bedroom home on a flat site, to a 12-month build for an architectural build in a lifestyle location with difficult access on a steep site. The whole process, on average, takes 12 months from initial enquiry through to us handing over the keys. What do you love most about your job? The people and the designs. Our ability to design and build sought-after, bespoke homes in an area that I love. 0800 600 620 info@thehouseco.co.nz www.thehouseco.co.nz

The Best of Both Worlds

Life is full of challenges – and so is building a new home. There are countless moving parts and many people who need to be talking to each other. That’s why it’s far more efficient (and relaxing) when you have an all-in-one team. Box™ is New Zealand’s only combined registered architectural practice and master builders under one roof and they have been designing and building homes since 2011, so they know how to work out the most stylish and practical solutions for your site. Here’s a good for instance: at first glance, this plot of land in the Westmere suburb of Auckland was a jewel - location, location, location. But there was a catch: the council required 24/7 access to stormwater services that sat right in the middle of the natural building platform. The Box™ guys and gals put their heads together and came up with a strategy that was cunning and contemporary. The single-level dwelling is effectively slung between two plinths above a courtyard garden. This ticked the box that gave the required access to the services and made a wonderful entry journey to the front door. Win-win which is what Box™ are all about. So if you are looking for someone to design and build your new home, look to the company that is reshaping the way architecture is done. 0800 717 717 www.box.co.nz

NEW OLD BARN

The owners fell in love with the character and scale of North American, antique, barn frames and dreamed of importing one to New Zealand since 2005. After discovering ‘Heritage Barns’ who specialise in dismantling and restoring old barn frames, they travelled to Texas to view their facilities. Without having purchased a site, they bought a nine metre high Eastern Hemlock frame, originally built in the 1860’s as the larger of two barns on the Walton Farm in Ontario, Canada. Having secured the barn frame, they turned their attention to finding the perfect site. The search took 18 months, and after two failed attempts to secure a section, they fell in love with a site in the foothills of the Dome Valley Forest with abundant mature trees, a waterfall and a derelict cow shed. The site is part of one of the original farms in the Warkworth area. Europeans settled here in the 1860’s, around the same time the Walton Barn was being constructed in Canada. The farm passed to James Henry Goatley who arrived from England in 1883 and in the 1970’s, the most recent owners ran an angora goat stud (a coincidental link to the name of the earlier owner).

Auckland based Architecture firm ‘Milieu’ was approached to undertake the complex task of transforming the 160 year old barn frame into a modern New Zealand home. The exterior of the barn will use contemporary materials to contrast with the heritage barn structure. Metal cladding will wrap the exterior of the building, softened by rough sawn timber on the west facing approach. ‘Milieu’ have designed a grand, double height dining hall in the centre of the barn, with steel and timber mezzanine floors on either side, to house the bedrooms and library. The modern steel insertions will exhibit a high level of craftsmanship, similar in care and attention to that taken by the original craftsmen of the Walton Barn. Construction is due to commence in 2019, when a team from ‘Heritage Barns’ in Texas will arrive to assemble the barn frame, then local builders will take over and complete the building.

THE LITTLE COMMUNITY WITH BIG PLANS

‘Mangawhai Central’ is captivating keen interest from locals, neighbouring towns and visitors alike, as a significant project for the future of Mangawhai. The plans and ideas are on the table and everyone can have a say. The iconic 128 hectares of land along Molesworth Drive in Mangawhai between the Heads and the Village has settled to Viranda Partners Limited, based on the North Shore. The area presents an exciting opportunity for the developer to unfold a fully-integrated solution to a community feeling the effects of rapid growth pains. Andrew Guest, company co-founder and chairman confirms, “All of the titles are now in the name of Mangawhai Central Ltd, ready for development. This is a real milestone, a point of crossing the Rubicon, so to speak. It demonstrates significant funding and commitment to provide a plan that will serve Mangawhai well into the future.” Last month, a second public meeting was attended by more than 450 residents, all keen

to learn the latest news and progress of the project. Locals filled the Mangawhai Club to learn more about ‘Mangawhai Central’, the proposed new township which aims to provide greater connectivity for this community. Owner and director of the appointed real estate agency, Bayleys in the North, Mark Macky, opened the meeting. “You don’t find many developers who are keen to stand in front of a room of locals and ask, what are your thoughts? We have a unique situation here where a developer is committed and passionate about making sure the community has a say. It’s really exciting.” Macky commented. Bayleys are taking registrations for commercial and industrial opportunities now. Also attending the meeting was Kaipara mayor Dr. Jason Smith, deputy mayor Peter Wethey, and councillor Jonathan Larson. Smith addressed the crowd, stating the developers were there to listen and canvass the community’s reaction to the vision of the project. He also pointed out how the outline of the concept master-plan was based on

the shape of Mangawhai’s namesake, a stingray. The meeting was a chance for Andrew Guest to reiterate that Mangawhai Central is a community project and that residents were being presented with “broad potential concepts, designed by professionals, taking into consideration traffic, amenities and resources required in a community and how those might work. Things not wanted or deemed unrequired, will not be advanced.” Public feedback covered a range of questions, some around traffic, financial effects of sewage and for details around some of the proposed facilities eg. medical centre, schooling ideas and supermarket. The management team behind Mangawhai Central have a legacy project on their hands. A once in a lifetime chance for visitors around New Zealand to sense the local pride and continuing spirit of Mangawhai. Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai www.mangawhaicentral.co.nz

MAKING IT EASY TO BE GREEN After quitting the daily Auckland commute, Warkworth resident Andy Edmunds, has used his years of senior management experience and taken Greenwash to new heights by expanding the business, winning contracts and a few awards along the way. Last year the company was recognised for excellence in customer service by winning the Oceania New Zealand Business Award for Best Exterior House Washing Business. This year Greenwash was nominated for, and after months of in depth vetting, has been named New Zealand’s Eco-Friendly Cleaning Firm of the year. Greenwash’s guiding principle is to do no harm to the environment. As such they have researched and found an environmentally friendly alternative to the normal chlorine bleach based, soft wash. Owner Andy Edmunds says, “after quite a lot of searching we’ve found a New Zealand made, biodegradable product that is derived from extracts of coconut oil, citrus and vinegar which helps lift the dirt before being washed off”. Not only is it effective, it is also safe for your plants, pets and the wider environment, with the added bonus that all of the ingredients come from renewable sources. The alternative, which traditionally uses a chlorine mixture, was harmful to plant and animal life alike and was also more dangerous to work with. Greenwash use this eco-friendly method on all aspects of exterior cleaning, be it roofs or decks, driveways or buildings. Don’t hesitate to contact the locally owned, award winning, eco-friendly option for house washing.

DURABUILD CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF LOCAL BUSINESS

When builder Mike Bronkhorst first went out on his own, it wasn’t exactly the most prosperous times for builders. Completing his building apprenticeship shortly after the Global Financial Crisis, Mike went on to establish DuraBuild Construction in early 2013. The company recently celebrated its five year anniversary of servicing the Warkworth region. “Learning the trade during the hard times really taught me a lot about how I wanted to run my own business”, says Bronkhorst. “In a notoriously cyclical industry, I learnt the importance of establishing yourself, being active in the local community and surrounding yourself with reliable suppliers because when times get tough, it is those local connections which keep you afloat”. Growing from just himself and a single apprentice, DuraBuild now has a staff of 18 who work on a range of different construction jobs throughout Warkworth, Matakana and Omaha.

A lot has changed in the area over this time and although the greater Warkworth region is earmarked as a major area for growth over the next decade, Bronkhorst hopes that the sense of community will remain. “I think this area is unique in that, throughout the past five years we’ve seen a lot of growth and change but we’ve maintained that supportive, small town feel – I really hope we don’t lose that”. Though prospects are positive for the local construction industry over the next few years, Bronkhorst stresses the importance of always remaining prepared for any downturn. “In this industry, we must always prepare ourselves for the unknown. Through growing the business over the past five years, I’ve learnt the importance of growing smartly. The crew we have put together now is really the product of that – a great combination of local guys who bring a mixture of experience, reliability and eagerness to learn”.

Reflecting on the past five years, Bronkhorst is keen to apply the lessons he has learnt to further improve and grow the business over the next five years. “We have a lot of new exciting projects and new builds on the horizon which will allow us to expand our team and increase our workload. We’ve also recently expanded our administrative team to ensure that we can effectively manage a greater number of projects as we continue to grow”. DuraBuild have recently upsized their offices. So if you would like to discuss a project – big or small, feel free to pop in for a chat or give Mike a call.

GOING NATIVE WITH MAUREEN YOUNG WORDS

Maureen Young knows her native plants. She’s a self-taught field botanist who knows her mānuka from her kānuka, and can spot a Tasmanian ngaio masquerading as a New Zealander. She has created definitive preserved plant collections for Hauturu and the Rodney area, and has had multiple studies published. Maureen is a botanical treasure who volunteers her time and expertise to help out all over New Zealand cataloguing native species. Maureen first fell in love with plants in 1956, while in the sixth form at Warkworth District High School. “All the other 16-year-olds fell in love with Elvis Presley but I fell in love with a fern – Blechnum filiforme. It grows on the ground and has a little sterile frond, and then, as it comes to a tree, it grows up and the fronds get longer and longer, and then the fertile fronds are all way up high. To find a fern that had three forms of leaves just seemed magical. Field botanists with the depth of knowledge and skill that Maureen possesses are vital when it comes to understanding and maintaining

LUKE

WILLIAMSON

the health of our native bush. “All the current taxonomists are getting old and we need some replacements. We need people who know their plants,” Maureen opines. One of Maureen’s bugbears, she tells me. “I’m very disappointed that they don’t teach botany like they used to at Auckland University. There are all these young people working for the regional councils, DOC and privately, and they don’t know enough about plants. How can you establish an accurate baseline if you can’t even identify your plants properly? Maureen is concerned over the planting of species in areas in which they are not native. “They planted five big kōwhai trees in Kōwhai Park when they upgraded it, but they planted a variety that grows down at Lake Taupō. I asked why they hadn’t planted the local kōwhai and they said, ‘Oh, what is the local kōwhai?’ Now, shouldn’t that be the first question they ask!” Maureen acknowledges how lucky she was to have mentors in Warkworth of the calibre of Lucy Moore and Dr Max Hamilton, and the Auckland

Botanical Society has been a huge influence in her life. She is a life member of the Society and helps organise their monthly field trips which venture to all corners of New Zealand. “Joining the Auckland Botanical Society is a great way for people to get into botany, and I also highly recommend visiting the website of the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network.” Maureen is not a big fan of replanting programs: “I love nothing better than to see natural regeneration. Just keep areas weed free and let them regenerate naturally. That way we get the right varieties for the area.” Maureen is a local and national treasure, and she is extremely generous with her time and knowledge. She’s happy to take small groups out into the bush for some ‘botanising’ because that is where she is happiest. “I don’t know from where other people get their excitement. Botanists get this wonderful thrill from finding unusual or unexpected plants.” As for future plans, Maureen is assisting on several botanical publications but doesn’t plan

LANDSCAPE ARTISTRY WORDS

Robin and Simon Barclay are locals much involved in the Matakana community. Their recent move from Takatu Road closer to the village was an opportunity to build their ‘forever’ home. As passionate gardeners, they were determined to ensure the garden was ‘right’ from the start. The bones of the landscape were good, with established trees leading the eye toward rugged Mt Tamahunga. They gave their list of must-haves to landscape architect Andy Hamilton and were presented with inspiring sketches. The couple rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in.

They moved an old bungalow, ripped out the pool and once-local digger driver Rob Mackisack (“a genius,” says Robin) had done his work they had a muddy, blank canvas over the winter of 2017. With the house build underway, the first priority was the vege garden. “It’s my happy place,” says Robin, “although it’s quite a hard call. There are so many lovely areas – the woodland, ponds and wetland – and the dahlias and wildflowers are incredible over summer.” Pieces of outdoor sculpture, collected over the years, add points of focus to the landscape. A few

favourite plants draw the whole together: the soft, elegant Chinese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis), massed native grasses (Carex secta), rosemary, bold echinacea flowers and dainty spikes of gaura (whirling butterflies), whose delicacy belies its hardiness. “We wanted an ecosystem for birds and bees, but it had to be low maintenance,” says Robin. Because any ‘forever’ home must, of course, factor in that other must-have - grandchildren.

HERITAGE ROSES

The perfume, form, the history and of course the romance of yesteryear. What is there not to love? These amazing roses come in many forms single, very double small polyanthas through to climbers and ramblers. Some are summer flowering but many families flower from spring to autumn. Many set the fabulous hips that brighten a dull autumn day and some families display brilliant autumn colour. So, heritage roses can be a garden shrub for all seasons. Pruning of the repeat flowering roses Teas, Hybrid Teas and perpetuals is carried out in winter but the once flowering families Albas, Centifolias, damasks Gallicas and Banksiae are pruned as soon as they finish flowering. The species Burnets and Sweet Briars are best left to grow naturally as they dislike pruning.

SELECTING THE RIGHT PLANTS FOR THE REGION

It is an important decision to know what to plant and where. Selecting the right plants for your garden may be seem straight forward, however mistakes can be easily made, even by experienced gardeners, causing extra effort and expense in the longer term. There are a few things to think about before selecting your plants. Make choices based on the region’s climatic conditions - rainfall, humidity, wind and frost; soil type and drainage; aspect of your site. Preferred garden style: formal or casual; evergreen or deciduous; native or exotic; private or open landscape, and ongoing maintenance. Do your research by observing local gardens and plants to see what does well. Talk to locals if you are new to the area, visit local nurseries and seek advice from experienced horticulturists. Plant and enjoy the experience watching them grow into the wonderful space you imagined. As every property is different consider your soil, wet zones and climate conditions before making your selection. Some plants that are proven winners in the Matakana region are:

• Moisture loving or hardy grasses such as NZ natives or Lomandra grasses. Lomandra Tanika and Lime Tuff are proven in this area, handling clay, wet feet and dry spells. Lomandra Little Con is also successful if provided with adequate drainage. • A range of Phormium flaxes. • Trees and hedging– natives such as Pittosporum, Totara, Puriri and Exotics such as Lily Pilly, Alders, Oak, Maple, Liquidambar, Swamp Cypress to name a few. • Fruit trees – pip and citrus. Stone fruits are vulnerable due to humid conditions and mild winters.

HERON’S FLIGHT-HARVEST REFLECTION WORDS

The 2018 season was challenging but rewarding. The amphora is filled with sangiovese grapes, the tanks with fermenting dolcetto and sangiovese, and the drying racks with grapes for passito. Two days after grape picking finished we harvested a bumper crop of olives. The season started with an exceptionally wet and muddy winter, during which we pruned for the vintage ahead. Danny Schuster and Leon, master and apprentice, motored through the vines with a trio of young women from Europe. Spring was warm and wet. The buds shot away. This looked promising. A hot dry December and January followed and we were happy with the fruit set. We were able to work through the vineyard straightening the cordons, shaping bunches and mowing the grass regularly. Birds sang and bees buzzed. February and March brought rain from the tropics. The grass sward and open canopies helped the

MARY

EVANS

rain to run off and to dry from the fruit. Disease alert! Whenever we could we strengthened the skins by applying protectants, removed new shoots to open the canopy and exposed the grapes to the sun. Not too much however… grapes will sunburn, and the leaves are important engines for photosynthesis. Bright sunny days in early April raised hopes. We started to organise vintage supplies and to bottle existing wine, clean the tanks and winery, and to hesitantly approach pickers. This is a nervous time. The perfect time for us to pick is when the grapes are ripe enough that the birds want to eat the gelatinous capsule encasing the seeds. Who gets there first wins. This season the bees and birds were hungry. We netted against the birds and put down sugar syrup to divert the bees. Every autumn we think we can’t stand the stress any longer. This season was no later than usual but we tried to hang on as long as we could to develop the best flavours and colour possible, but

were anxious any rain would destroy them. We thank the dedicated workers: they came when we begged them, left when we wanted to hang on a bit longer to sweeten the crop up, and worked long and hard to bring the grapes in. Thanks also to the processing team who crushed them and distributed them by hand (via buckets) into the tanks. If it had been over to me I would have rushed to pick the lot on the first fine day but partner David has nerves of steel and patience to spare. Over the season he had the perseverance and patience to do what needed to be done: to grow the vines so they thrived, to protect the fruit so they didn’t get disease and to achieve maximum ripeness.

Not only will you be rewarded by the discovery but you will be making a real difference to these small businesses that add much to our community.

The winds of change have blown through the Matakana wine region in the last few months. The closure of firstly, Mahurangi River Winery, and then most recently Ransom Wines, has once again shown the truth to the maxim that “the only thing that is constant is change”. While change brings fresh opportunity and new ideas, it is also a time to acknowledge the end of an era. We give recognition and thanks to both these wineries, and their restaurants, for the vibrancy, life, and pleasure that they brought

They produced for many years wines of quality, consistency, and personality that have been an important part of the greater fabric of Matakana wine. here until the end of their days.”

Jacqi became a qualified vet nurse especially for her ‘rescues’ and devotes her time to the care and wellbeing of each animal. Many have been dumped, abused and have no other hope for survival. “They all have incredible stories of woe, but learn we are a safe, friendly environment,” says Jacqi.

Over the years they have rescued and cared for a number of neglected and abused horses. Their aim, for these beautiful creatures, is to teach them to trust again and live out their lives in a safe, caring environment. “These too remain with us as they are often just too damaged to be rehomed. They graze from the purpose-built feed stations in a happy herd, free to roam over ten acres,” says Jacqi.

Fur 2 Feathers is a registered charity and by raising funds through Go Fund Me, have built a bespoke facility with climbing walls, tunnels and wheels to cater for their rescued cats. “Adult cats are incredibly difficult to rehome as everyone wants a kitten. Those overlooked because of age or disability, such as ‘wobbly kitten syndrome’, are

The ‘Rescue’ is also proudly part of the Hen Rescue Group, rescuing hens from egg farms and finding them ‘forever homes’. These hens have no hope for survival past 18 months old when they are culled and the next layers brought in. “We rehabilitate them and they leave us having blossomed into the hen they should be.”

There are a small number of volunteers who help out on big projects or on a daily basis. This is a small rescue and generally self-funded group. “Fundraising happens for bigger projects and helpers come and help us build or create the spaces required,” but overall it is Jacqi’s vision and heart that keeps the rescues afloat and the animals happy and healthy. SKELETAL FOLLY AT BRICK BAY PHOTOS

After four years, the Brick Bay Folly Project 2018 has delivered a fresh take on a folly with the recently completed ‘Jonah’. The 2018 winning team of Norman Ning Wei (Moller Architects), Cynthia Yuan (MPM Projects), Kim Huynh (Paterson Architectural Collective) and Kevin Kun Ding (Open Media Lab) all met at Auckland University while studying architecture. Fast forward a couple of years and an entry into the Brick Bay Folly competition! After reconnecting and throwing some ideas around at an Auckland café, the inspiration behind ‘Jonah’ was born. The team put together a proposal and submitted it for judging in October 2017 then waited to find out if they had made the top five. Anticipation gave way to excitement and hours of planning, sourcing and testing with the news that team ‘Jonah’ would be converting their concept into reality. Each year the bar is raised as, young and emerging New Zealand architects and students explore the intersection between architecture and sculpture, and the overlaps in reference, concept and technique between the two disciplines. The philosophy of the Brick Bay Folly project is to support new talent and challenge them to actually produce their creations. The winning entry

receives a $35,000 grant towards realising their proposed project, and support comes from long term sponsors Resene, Fletcher Building, Brick Bay, Sam Hartnett Photography, Architecture New Zealand, Architecture Now and the New Zealand Institute of Architects. Christine Didsbury, Folly Judge and Trustee of the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail explains, “A Folly is an architectural object that lacks a deliberate functional purpose which must instead examine its surroundings and allow them to bring it into existence”. Cynthia Yuan of team ‘Jonah’ continues, “our creation is stranded alongside one of the beautiful lakes at Brick Bay and together with the seaside location of the North Auckland East Coast is reminiscent of the biblical story of Jonah, in which the prophet temporarily dwells inside a whale and received shelter from turmoil”. The structure references an abstracted giant sea creature, stranded on land, prone to the conditions of weathering and eventual exposure of its skeletal form. Adhering to the traditions of a folly, although like a building, it provides no practical protection, only offering spatial definition. Visitors are invited to occupy this semi-sheltered enclosure and perhaps imagine

being inside the belly of a stranded whale. A large cantilevered arch or nose, trembles lightly in the wind, suggesting characteristics of living creatures and the transience of flesh, while colourful, translucent mesh ‘skin’ offers an interface between the visitor and the surroundings. Experimenting with non-traditional materials for the project, using PE piping for structural elements, the fabrication of this Folly was a journey of research and continual prototyping to create a lightweight construction where tension is paramount, to achieve a unique and elegant aesthetic. ‘Jonah’ was officially opened with a celebration held at Brick Bay in May when the team’s family, friends, tutors, and employers all came together, along with sponsors and the Brick Bay team, to revel in this achievement. Aw shucks! After all the love and support from last years sold out event, Junction Magazine is bringing the Oyster & Wine Festival Matakana back for a second year. But this time it’s bigger (double the tickets in fact) and better! Locked in for Sunday 7 October 2018, 10-4pm at the Matakana Country Park, it’ll be a day filled with oysters, wine, entertainment, competitions and a whole lot of family fun. Junction Magazine is teaming up with local oyster farmers from the Mahurangi Harbour and wineries, to bring you all the deliciousness and more! There will be plenty of freshly shucked oysters served au naturel, paired with local wines for a mouth-watering experience. If you’re not a fan of these salty beauties, there will be many other seafood offerings and scrumptious cuisine available to satisfy all taste buds. The all-weather event will entertain with live music, cooking and wine demonstrations, face painting, arts and crafts for the kids and of course, shucking competitions - let the oyster battle begin! Oysters and wine often hold a notion of sophistication, however leave the heels at home and make sure you glam up your gumboots for this one. There’s a special prize for the best pair of gummies on show. Don’t be antisocial and make sure you follow our Instagram and Facebook for your weekly dose of oysters and wine and keep an eye out for a few cheeky competitions too. @oysterfestmatakana #oysterfestmatakana Adult tickets cost $39.50 including an event glass, first glass of wine or beer and 2 half shell oysters. Children (7–17 yrs old) tickets cost $17, including a non-alcoholic drink Children (0-6 yrs old ) Free Sunday 7 October, 10am-4pm The Oval, Matakana Country Park, 1151 Leigh Road, Matakana www.oysterfestivalmatakana.co.nz
