WENDY DOUGLAS Wendy has had a colourful career to say the least. From the UK, Wendy has lived in the region for eight years and has no desire to be anywhere else. A fan of Junction from day one, Wendy donned an afro and straddled a tractor for the cover of issue three. "Having worked in television and radio, I am super excited to be working as part of the team for this local, contemporary magazine that has great content and looks fab on my coffee table.”

TREE CLIMBING FOR GROWN UPS WORDS
That awareness of where everything is around you, where it is going, and respecting that you are working with a living thing, are all vital to doing the job well, Linus explains. “When you are up a big tree and you are taking out branches that are

above you, and you are having to get them to the ground without breaking something, including yourself, it’s great! You have to let that adrenalin, of working in a dangerous environment, focus you.” Finding people with that combination of skills and motivation can be tricky but Linus has worked hard to build his team. “I honestly believe that we are one of the best tree companies in the country. You would be hard pressed to find a company of our size where all of the staff are qualified arborists. We are really good at what we do.”
-
Linus Wood is an arborist with 20 years’ experience and he has been running his company, Tree Contracts, for 11 years. “As a profession, it’s different. You’ve got to have a head for heights, you have to be willing to work hard, because it’s very physically demanding, and it’s a threedimensional job. On a daily basis, you are working out a 3D jigsaw puzzle.”

community seriously. He has built the company slowly and steadily so that he can ensure continuity of work for himself and the team. “I don’t want to employ someone one week and then tell them three weeks later that we have run out of work. I support people and they support me.” Something that appeals to Linus is that he can physically see what he has achieved at the end of each day. “We may have changed the shape and health of a tree, changed someone’s property and made their view better, or just made them feel a lot safer; the sense of satisfaction is enormous.” Getting a chance to actually climb a tree has

become harder for Linus as the business has grown. “I get about four hours a month on the tools, if I’m lucky. The rest of the time, I’m running around keeping it all running. The cost to run even a little business like this is huge and it takes a lot of time.” Planning is a big part of each job for Linus. “When I first go to look at a job, I have to figure out how I am going to do it, what equipment I will need and what the price it will need to be. Then there are Council consents to do, typically, it takes a month between looking at a job and being able to start on it.” Working on keeping historic trees healthy is something Linus feels privileged to be able to do. “We do a survey of all the trees in the Mansion House grounds (Kawau) every five years and make recommendations on what work needs doing. Some of those trees are the first of those species ever planted in New Zealand so working on keeping them healthy is fantastic.” There are two basic ways to become an arborist in New Zealand – an apprenticeship or academic courses run by Wintec in Hamilton or Otago Polytechnic. Linus explains, “I think the apprenticeship is the better way to go because, at the end, you have three years of practical experience.” When all is said and done, it’s still all about getting up a tree for Linus. “Sometimes, you’re at a property and they don’t have a view, but you climb their tree and there is a magnificent view! On those days, it’s just glorious.”

QUENTIN JUKES FROM HOMEBUILDERS WORDS
It’s nice to know that there’s always someone to talk to when life gets tough. That’s the idea behind Homebuilders – to give free emotional and practical support to families under any kind of stress. Based in Warkworth, Homebuilders offer a range of services in the North Rodney district, including confidential counselling for parents and children, assistance with Work and Income, legal advice, as well as courses on parenting and mindfulness.
REUBEN
KEELING
he jumped at the opportunity. “When I first came to the area, I was doing some little bits and pieces in similar organisations,” he says. "One day I saw an opening at Homebuilders, and I thought I would go for it. I knew they had a tight team, who were focused on doing meaningful, quality work.”
school,” says Quentin. “Homebuilders is also an active part of the Te Rito family violence prevention network.” Once a month, Homebuilders run a free legal clinic together with the Women’s Centre, where people can ask for advice from local lawyers who have generously offered their time.
“Every family has times when things are great, but they also have times when things are tough. We are here to support families through the tough times, so they can deal with their issues more effectively.”
“And another thing we offer is a free uniform exchange service. People can bring their old uniforms in and if they need a new piece for the coming term they can have a look through what other people have donated.”
“We like working with people who have small issues, because it helps prevent them from becoming big issues,” he says.
Homebuilders was established for just that reason back in 1989. Their main service has always been family support, but they offer a lot more than that.
Quentin has been supporting local families since he joined Homebuilders 17 years ago. He started out working with the helpdesk service team, and when the main Coordinator role became available
“We have a youth counselling program for teenagers, and a ‘Chrysalis’ one-to-one program for younger children, to help them deal with issues like parent separation, or bullying at
“We also hold parenting and mindfulness courses in Warkworth and Wellsford. The parenting course is a really good top-up for mums and dads. The aim of the mindfulness courses is to help people anchor themselves, if for example they are dealing with depression or anxiety – to manage it better.”
Homebuilders Coordinator Quentin Jukes says they aim to be proactive and help people create positive changes for themselves.
6
Homebuilders is only 45% funded by the
government, and they rely on the generosity of local people and programmes like the Lottery Grants Board for the remainder of their funding. Even then, it’s sometimes not enough to cover all costs – Quentin says they are flat out and typically do 80% more work than the funding pays for. “We have eight paid staff, who are all part-timers, and a bunch of 15 volunteers to help with the background work. They are a wonderful team and do great work.” “We really appreciate how generous people are, we get a lot of people offering to set up regular
direct debits, and they all add up to make a difference. Sometimes we are blown away. Bevan Woodward, a local guy, rode his bike from Cape Reinga to Bluff and raised around $5,000 for us recently.” That kind of generosity and community spirit was part of the reason Quentin moved here 20 years ago, around 1998. The beautiful local beaches were another reason. “Te Arai and Pakiri Beach – they are the two places that make me the happiest,” he says. “That sense of space is fantastic, and there is seldom anyone else around. It’s a real privilege to be able
to experience something like that, which I think we don’t always appreciate. It’s like something out of a movie.” Quentin encourages people to get in touch with Homebuilders, no matter how big or small the issue is. “It’s a very easy process. People are welcome to check the website or just give us a buzz on the phone, so we can have a chat. We’re here to help.”

GOLD MEDAL FOR CHARLIE’S GELATO The New Zealand Ice Cream Awards have just been held and Charlie’s have been awarded a Gold Medal for their Licorice Gelato. Their chief gelato maker Lynette Vujcich had been tweaking this recipe in the lead up to the awards so it was great recognition of her work. They also brought home two Silver medals for their Black Doris Plum Sorbetto and Strawberry Gelato. Their strawberries have a cult following so it’s not surprising they have contributed to an award. Owners, Andrew and Tania are thrilled with the wins. “We know the product is really top notch because we make it in small batches, with great ingredients.”

JUNCTION AWARDS WINNER
THE SAWMILL BREWERY & SMOKO ROOM
The Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Room have taken out the top prize! Congratulations on winning the Junction ‘J Award’. The team have worked hard to get where they are today and it’s a must visit spot when wanting a few delicious sharing plates perfectly matched with creative beers. The Sawmill Brewery is located in a nifty rural setting on Leigh Road, just outside of Matakana – you’ll enjoy your beer, with a view. Mike Sutherland and Kirsty McKay, owners of the Sawmill Brewery, work with a small, dedicated team of talented brewers, bringing you ‘beer with roots’ with no sugar, preservatives or colours, unpasteurized and plenty of vibrant flavours. “We are both really proud of our team, in the brewery

were the first craft brewery to can beer,” says Kirsty. “We have been hyper-independent with an already independent industry, because of living up here,” she says.
It’s no wonder the Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Room have won the Junction ‘J Award’, as they value their staff and community considerably. “We try to understand what our staff want from their involvement with Sawmill and then make a pathway for that to happen,” says Kirsty. “Because the business is growing there are always opportunities to learn more and do more,” she says. The Matakana region inspires the development and success of the brewery, “up here, we feel motivated by this creative and entrepreneurial community. For example, we
All the success definitely comes with its challenges “almost daily you are confronted by things you don’t know, but need to learn, and fast. Learning how to make not just good beer but really great beer,” says Kirsty. It continues to pay off though and the team have quickly learnt to back themselves in the decisions they make and to stop comparing themselves to others in the industry. Instead they are focussing on moving forward and growing the business even more! “We have had incredible people part of the brewery over the last 8 years, super talented and
committed. We have also had a plan for growth because we believe this is good for our team and our community,” says Kirsty. The Sawmill team will now be expanding, with their own sales team members coming on board. They have recently also been hosting incredible collaboration dinners in the Smoko Room, which the community have really loved “we want to keep growing our business and create opportunities for our team and community,” says Kirsty. If that’s not enough, the team have now also applied to become a B Corporation Certified business, which is a third party standard, requiring companies to meet social sustainability, environmental performance standards, accountability standards and to be transparent to the public according to
the score they receive on the assessment. “It’s really challenging, really confronting sometimes and has got us thinking a lot about the future of the brewery,” says Kirsty. The Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Room is the perfect addition to the beautiful Matakana region and worth the drive for its delicious golden drops – your taste buds are in for quite the treat!

JUNCTION AWARDS RUNNER UP
BRICK BAY WINES & SCULPTURE TRAIL
The public voting this year for our top Junction Award was a very close race and as the runners up it was clear that Brick Bay is still one of the top picks in our area for a relaxing day out, catching up with friends and family in a breathtaking location. The Sculpture Trail and Glass House were conceived and built from 2004-6, opening in January 2007, for those weekend visitors and the growing local population, looking for a place to relax and indulge in art and beautiful food and wines. “This region has an entrepreneurial heritage and a culture of creativity. This combined with stunning natural beauty and proximity to Auckland is a winning combo,” says Anna Didsbury, General Manager of Brick Bay. “Our local supporters are an extremely important market for us. We look after our locals by keeping
our offering fresh and dynamic, and rewarding locals in the winter with our 'Love Locals' promotion’.” “We've noticed that the local demographic is changing with more young families moving to the area,” she says. “This has been fantastic for Brick Bay as we offer a multi-generational experience.” We asked what they felt has helped Brick Bay to grow into the success it is today. “Always being open to new inspiration and pushing the continuous improvement and evolution of Brick Bay - it is a project that will never be 'finished'.” Brick Bay does not just see itself as a stand alone entity, but rather recognises the importance of working hard to actively market the region as a whole, and in turn the benefits are felt by many. “We champion many local producers and suppliers, and also by being a large local employer.” says Anna.
Because for Brick Bay it is all about people. Whether it is the visitors or the workforce, it has to work for everyone. “Having the opportunity to develop our people and being the meaningful place for our people rather than the stepping stone to a more meaningful job makes us feel proud.” “Developing our people is integral to our organisation, whether that be apprenticeship programmes, in-house training, coaching/ mentoring and off-site courses. Our people are a huge asset and they expect to learn and grow in their roles.” So what does the future hold for Brick Bay? “We're often chosen as a destination for group events and celebrations, so we're looking forward to hosting more of these occasions.” 17 Arabella Lane, Snells Beach www.brickbay.co.nz

THE J AWARD
GREEN WITH ENVY
BY JOEY CHALK - KINGPOST TIMBERWORKS
WINNER: HOMEWARES, GIFTS + ART GALLERIES
The 2018 Junction Magazine Award for the local business of the year has been made by Joey Chalk of Kingpost Timberworks. “I think the hard bright look works perfectly with a soft waving grain. I made the award from a plywood core, veneered with curly American Walnut, mounted on a solid Brass stand, all made in house here in Wellsford.”
Eight years ago armed with a vision and great sense of style, Green with Envy’s founder Nicole set about building the thriving business that it is today, gaining international acclaim at the Global Innovation Awards in Chicago, in 2017. However, there’s no place like home. “The support from local customers is the mainstay of our business,” she says. “We really appreciate their loyalty and in turn we try to make their lives easier by sourcing and ordering in products they are wanting, so they don’t need to travel down to the city.” Their clothing collection, Madeby, continues to grow and they have also been designing a locally made furniture range.
Our 2018 Junction Award voting proved a real race to the finish line this year. It has been the closest contest so far with the local business vying for the top spot: a year of free advertising with Junction Magazine. Our categories ranged from Restaurants to Giftware, Beauty to Accommodation, Wineries and Breweries to Local Food Suppliers and more. With close to 10,000 votes cast for local businesses it’s a great time to be living and working in this beautiful and prosperous region. www.kingpost.co.nz www.facebook.com/kingposttimberworks

WINNER: RESTAURANTS + BARS
When Matakana Cinemas opened their doors in 2007, locals leapt for joy! Still one of the most incredible, independent cinemas out there and as popular are ever, the team continues to maintain their reputation for excellence. “We constantly strive to improve our operations and we often hear positive feedback from the community, so we know they really do appreciate having us here,” says owner Dan. “We are currently working on a robust, new loyalty programme that will offer some benefits to our best guests. ”They are also keen to support their team, many of whom are young. “We want to nurture and help mould good people; we see our business as a school not just a workplace.”
Wharf Street Bistro is three years old this year and this funky little restaurant continues to thrive as a local favourite. Primarily focused on providing a great restaurant for the local community, this little bistro has the perfect warm and cozy atmosphere that brings the locals back time after time. “I’m very proud that we are keeping up with the demand and growth of Warkworth, and being able to please the wide range of clientele that we have,” says owner Matt. “We try our best, to fit the locals in at peak times.” They are planning to offer the Bistro up for private events hire (as a drinks and nibbles venue) on Sundays or Mondays - so watch this space!

With a beautiful interior to boot the Sawmill Brewery fast became a local staple. “Up here we have been really inspired by this very creative and entrepreneurial community, “ says owner Kirsty. “We feel enthusiastic about the local economy and work with local like-minded businesses every day. We have learnt a lot in the last few years and have had a lot of conversations with other small businesses around here to share what we have (hopefully) figured out.”
“I really appreciate what this location has to offer - the lifestyle and the gorgeous beaches appeal to a wide range of people, creating diversity and a positive energetic vibe in the area,” says owner Sophie.

Charlie’s has been running for more than a decade, so the new owners were faced with learning the ropes, as well as continuing to grow their famous strawberries and blueberries. “We are super proud of the products that we produce,” says owner Andrew. “We couldn’t survive without the support of the local community and so we try and contribute our time and product whenever we can. This year we have supported many local schools, sports teams and community groups, and for the first time we have become a sponsor of the Mahurangi Rugby Club.”
The Black and White Barn’s owners understand the pressure of modern life and just how to meet their guests’ needs. “Taking time to escape from daily demands is the ultimate gift. Providing a boutique accommodation experience where our guests feel re-energized at the end of their stay is what makes our business tick. “Matakana is a fresh source of inspiration and activity, with a blend of of beautiful beaches, countryside, galleries, eateries, boutiques, vineyards and home to one of the best weekend farmers market.” New plans are afoot for this couple as they are now the proud owners of the Rose Cottage in Matakana Village - expanding their accommodation offering, from late July 2018.

Hannah Norton, is an inspiring young woman from small town Mangawhai, with a nous for social entrepreneurship and passion for using her skills to support mothers in her community. After eight years working as a journalist for newspapers and as a freelancer, Hannah returned to university to study law, travel and work as a freelance writer. Now, with more than eight years’ experience in professional communications and writing, she is employed by a top-tier national law firm, overseeing their public relations and communications. Hannah has been awarded the Fujitsu-JAIMS Global Leaders’ scholarship, an intensive management education programme, that sees scholars travel across the Asia-Pacific region gaining in depth, first-hand experience about these countries and their cultures. “It has the overarching goal of creating business leaders who aspire to do good in the community,” says Hannah. The programme was devised by Japanese

management professor, Ikujiro Nonaka, who has been named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the world’s most influential business thinkers. “His main driver is creating global business leaders that focus on the ‘common good’ and that was evident from the curriculum. We spent a week in the social enterprise in Thailand’s Chiang Rai, Doi Tung, learning about how the Mae Fah Luang Foundation transformed the area from one of the world’s most prolific opium producers into a sustainable village, with a far higher standard of living in the space of 30 years,” says Hannah. A key part of the Fujitsu-JAIMS Global Leaders’ scholarship programme is the Capstone Project. “We each had to work on a project that we will implement in our own communities for the common good,” says Hannah. Reducing New Zealand’s horrific suicide rate is Hannah’s key driver, and what her Capstone Project focuses on. “Just before my third birthday, my birth mother, Andrea Norton, committed suicide. It is hard to explain how it feels growing up as the child of a parent who has taken their own life and it has certainly involved a lot of introspective soul searching to get where I am now at 30,” says Hannah. Hannah was pretty proud to take home first place in the Capstone Project section of the scholarship and is now focussing on the implementation phase. “The project will target new mums, with the goal of addressing post-natal depression, as well as general connectedness for new mums, at a community level,” says Hannah. The aim is to launch the first event in Mangawhai in September, before being rolled out to the rest of Kaipara and Northland. If you’d like to get involved, Hannah would love to hear from volunteers and local businesses who want to help with this demographic.

David O’Sullivan’s excitement is obvious as he shows off the converted barn housing his new Matakana venture. It’s Hideaway HQ, a teambuilding and workshop venue, purpose-built and stocked with every necessity to enable groups to relax and focus on the things that matter. “What inspires me most,” he says, “is this line: ‘The single most untapped competitive advantage in business is teamwork.’ We’ve invested a lot of time and energy into designing our methodology and approach to optimise the teamwork that gets companies buzzing.” There are three parts to the process, David explains. First Hideaway HQ works with a company to find out their needs, then they design an event or workshop to optimise that vision, and finally follow up to maintain positive momentum. Experienced local business mentors Simon Barclay and Shane Bruhns are on hand to expedite the process. Events can be as simple as indoor team games and workshops over winter. For something more

ambitious, David’s savvy business partners provide cutting-edge smart device technology which allows groups to design their own event around what they’d like to do. “Think of it as your personally crafted ‘amazing race’ around the region, or a serious scavenger hunt tailored to your company’s unique requirements.” And yes, David has thought of everything from parking, barbecue and firepit to WiFi, Bluetooth and Chromecast. Hideaway HQ has just run its first workshop, for the staff of the Sawmill Brewery. “We had 26 employees discussing Mike and Kirsty’s vision. It was really inspirational to see a successful and fast-growing business resetting their core values for the future and including their full team in the decision making,” David says happily. Brewery owner Mike Sutherland said, “An excellent team event – at the end we were all super positive about our future aspirations. Dave's a legend and Hideaway HQ is light, bright, fun and has everything you need.”
In addition to team building events, Hideaway HQ will be running a series of workshops for teenagers. The first will focus on giving teenagers the insights to identify and effectively manage their own careers; the second will focus on resilience and self-management. “We have a raft of challenging activities in mind to hone valuable skill sets for teenagers – problem solving, communication, initiative and personal goalsetting,” says David. If your company – or your teenager – needs a highly focused pick-me-up, check out Hideaway HQ. Your team may just thank you for it.

FIGURING IT OUT WITH NXTSTEP WORDS

Helping out in his family’s orchard store in Cambridge as a kid was probably his first introduction into the world of big business, reckons Tim Watts. His recent move to Matakana means he’s come back to his rural roots, but his work remains steeped in the corporate world. It’s a different angle though – Tim’s company helps New Zealand school and tertiary leavers to research future career pathways and connects graduates with jobs.
Tim and his mate from uni, Rob Milne, both left their corporate jobs in 2009 thinking they’d go overseas, but the recession was beginning to bite. So they started up their own company here to address the gap in advice for tertiary students. GradConnection was not about recruitment. It simply offered companies, for an annual fee, online real estate on a highly-trafficked website aimed at smart young tertiary talent researching their careers.
Tim, now 35, did a double degree in accounting and law at Victoria University and was snapped up by PricewaterhouseCoopers. He spent four years there, but he’d had no idea that there were other options available for his skill set. “There’s a massive gap between what government and tertiary institutions invest into enticing school leavers, and what they invest in supporting graduates into career pathways. I soon realised that if you’ve done accounting, you have many creative options other than being an accountant. Supplying that information to young people is where we come in.”
They soon realised, though, that high school is where the lack of information begins. “We figured out that on average, school careers advisors have just five to ten hours a week for one-toone consulting for students. They needed new tools.” With discussion forums, stories, quizzes and employment information, scholarships and job listings, SchoolConnect and supporting publication NxtStep was an instant hit.
20
Last year, Tim and Rob launched a new company – an amalgamation of GradConnection and SchoolConnect. NxtStep forms a cohesive online platform for young New Zealanders to navigate
career and employment options, and works with over 250 of the country’s largest youth employers. “We can also advise employers, big and small, on how to attract, retain and develop graduates,” Tim says. Alongside his day job, Tim has a list of other not-for-profit interests which include being the youngest board member of the Outward Bound Trust of NZ and being a founding trustee of TupuToa, a corporate internship programme for Māori and Pasifika students. Add to this his family (wife Lauren and baby daughter Stella) and their four-acre block in Matakana and ‘busy’ is an understatement. But they’re loving the beaches and regional parks of the area and Tim does his best to work from home if he can. Despite the travel, “Matakana is definitely the best move we’ve made,” he says.

WOMEN’S BUSINESS CIRCLE AT TEA AND TONIC A growing number of women are realising that they can create their own livelihoods in a way that sustains their inherent passions and gifts. Monique Jansen and Aysha Robertson from Tea & Tonic Matakana and Zaneta Young of ‘Life You Love Coaching’ have come together and seeded a local monthly gathering for women wanting support, empowerment and that sense of connection and community that reminds them they are not alone in their endeavours. “It’s a safe and nurturing space for women to meet, share their challenges and triumphs within their business lives no matter how big or small, and be really heard and supported. We’re realising business can be done in a very feminine and intuitive way, taking into account our roles in our homes as mothers and lovers, and also our intrinsic cycles that tend to cast us into highs and lows, which we can begin to see as gifts. Having a sisterhood to connect in with is really a part of who we are,” comments Aysha. Zaneta says, “I’m so excited about this group! It is all about amazing women supporting and empowering each other with their dreams and visions for their businesses and/or the world, and finding your tribe of women who believe what you believe, knowing you absolutely don’t have to do it alone! I love supporting people to do what they love and creating the group was one way of making this happen.” The circle will also periodically host various local experts to lead women through a whole range of practical aspects of business. Refreshing organic teas are served every meeting, ensuring everyone feels welcome.

Craig and Lauren Henderson see themselves as, a house of creatives.
in storytelling; emotive and uplifting real life stories,” says Craig.
Initially, the couple’s main focus was on their TV production company Symphony, which specialises in documentaries and real-life stories.
Symphony’s programming credits range from the Life TV series, to corporate work for companies such as Cin7. Although most of the company’s work is from outside of the Warkworth area, they have worked on a number of local projects, including videos for groups such as Springboard, Young Ocean Explorers and Thinkladder.
However, Lauren has branched out into interior design and is busy establishing this side of the business in its own right. “We are a house of creatives,” says Lauren, “and it’s a house with many rooms.” The pair first met in 2001 when they were both working on the Snells Beach-based regional television station, Family TV. He as a cameraman, she as a journalist – and their relationship quickly blossomed. They were married in 2004 and following a period when Craig worked at the production company Exposure, they decided to put their storytelling skills to use in their own company Symphony, in 2011. “I wanted to do something that was at the very core of what we are passionate about

Lauren’s new business venture, began when she was taking a break from TV production to focus on bringing up their children. She has always had a passion for interior design and initially started a creative group through Springboard for people wanting to do up their homes on a budget as well as learn new skills. Her first design project was in 2014, the Little & Local Café in Snells Beach and since then the work has flooded in. Lauren specialises in design for commercial premises and her work incorporates lots of natural and recyclable elements. A beautiful example of this was the
Mahu Workspace, in Snells Beach. The couple acknowledge that living and working together 24/7 can occasionally present challenges. “Things can be a bit messy at times!” laughs Craig, but they find that their two separate businesses complement each other nicely. There are signs, too, that their children are equally keen to make their mark in the creative world. “I might take one of the kids on a weekend shoot and Lauren will have another carrying boxes into a project she might be working on or styling.” Craig says. “They love being involved and are highly creative.”

FREE ENGLISH UPSKILLING, IMPROVES WORKPLACE Businesses that employ staff around Rodney can benefit from free literacy training for staff who are challenged by workplace reading, writing and conversation demands. Literacy Auckland North, which already provides community-based education free around the region, is offering workplace options under a Government-subsidised scheme. Currently, Literacy AN operates two community-based computer groups in Wellsford and two groups in Warkworth, with nine Kiribati students. Manager Jane Rigby says that for employers as well as staff, the benefits are significant. “When people improve their literacy skills, they become more confident, communicate and perform better, and that translates to improved productivity and customer service,” Mrs Rigby says. “Typically, students may be those who slipped through the education system, and find reading or spelling a challenge. They may be looking to return to work and need to brush up their skills or English may be their second language.” Training can also help those who want to get their Learner Driver Licence or, as in the case of computer groups, develop digital literacy or number skills. Established over 40 years ago, the organisation supports around 400 adults a year with lessons in workplaces, libraries, schools, marae and other community venues North of the Bridge as far as Wellsford. It also works with schools, helping parents who lack sufficient English literacy skills to help their children. www.literacyaucklandnorth.org.nz 09 444 0420

When Bev Giles discovered how much she loved advising Warkworth business owners, well beyond the scope of her banking role, she knew where her future lay. North Rodney is growing, numerous businesses are shifting to the region and existing ones are experiencing a change in the market so the time seemed right for Bev to establish Time to Shine Coaching. MONARCH ESTATE VINEYARD AND EVENTS
“It gives me such a buzz when a bride and groom thank me for organising the best day of their lives, or a client is pleased with their successful event,” says Rachael Coates. After studying and travelling, Rachael immediately entered the corporate world of marketing and events. In 2006 she began her own business, Pepper Marketing Ltd., where she continues to consult on business and brand strategy, packaging development, product development, launches and events. When Rachael and her husband, Rick, moved from Herne Bay in 2013 to purchase a vineyard in Matakana, it went without saying that she needed to develop her own wine brand and hold events in the barn; and so Monarch Estate Vineyard wines and venue were born. Rachael
and Rick are now proud to have five-star reviews of their successful wine brand, and it is a pretty one at that. “Monarch Estate Vineyard could quite possibly have the best wine label design in all of Matakana,” said Ben Dugdale, Matakana Winegrowers Association President 2012-2 014. Monarch Estate Vineyard’s barn is a venue not to be missed! Full of character and charm, set amongst the vines, it is the perfect location for a D.I.Y. wedding. Rachael has been planning weddings, corporate events and parties in the barn and at other Matakana venues for over five years, so the recent establishment of her company, Monarch Events, is an exciting step for her. Whether they are wedding couples, corporate clients or party goers, Rachael loves helping her
clients organise the best event possible. From finding venues and sourcing suppliers through to the more intricate details and styling of events, she’s ultimately driven by a happy client. “My job is to bring my clients’ visions to life and taking the pressure away so they can focus on other things. I help them have a successful stress-free event, and to create unforgettable memories.” “We have so many great venues, caterers and other service providers in the region,” says Rachael, “my clients are always so happy that they chose Matakana for their event destination.”

“We love food,” says Emma Mason, co-owner of Luxe Catering and Events. “We don’t have holidays. We go out to dinner. Fine dining is our vice.” Emma, a Mangawhai local, her family having farmed in the area since the 1960s, is the logistics wizard, front of house and stylist part of Luxe. She’s spent the last decade immersed in the hospitality and event industries, working large events, mainly weddings, from Eagles Nest in Russell to Mudbrick on Waiheke Island. The other half of the “we” is Kris Malcolm. Kris, who is originally from Palmerston North, has been cooking for over twenty years and has spent time in kitchens in both New Zealand and Australia, notably working under Manu Feildel and Raymond Capaldi. Kris has also owned his own eateries and prides himself on being the ‘host with the most’ who can cook, work a floor, make a flat white and run the till. “My test kitchen is my happy place though,” he admits, “and seeing the end result of all that prep and planning come together is just fantastic.”The test kitchen, on a rainy winter’s day smells delicious. An oxtail ragu braises slowly in the oven and Kris is trying to decide whether he should pair it with mash or homemade pappardelle for dinner. “Look at how gooey it is,” he enthuses, opening the oven and giving it a stir. “Do you want a taste?” Every Luxe event is bespoke, with menus designed around a client’s needs and seasonal availability, with everything made in the Luxe kitchens. The delicious tasting grazing platters are perfect for summer or winter drinks gatherings. There are three five-course options for dinner parties and if it’s the full wedding experience you’re after Luxe can manage the entire event from superb food, to finding locations and dressing them for the day, to ordering the perfect cutlery and organising accommodation. “The bigger and prettier the event the better,” says Emma, “and I’m always watching trends. People want gorgeous weddings, big or small and we want to give them that. I do love a good wedding!”

on to an internal cobblestoned courtyard and entrance and parking is right outside, which makes arrival a whole lot easier. The venue has been popular for a variety of fundraising events, company launches and weddings. “The market square in the front of the building really comes alive at night,” says Emily Bennett. The area is large and open, giving you space to work with when planning your event. There’s plenty more to tempt you. You have full access to the café, which is light and spacious, as well as the market square and café courtyard, but depending on the size and style of your event, you can customise either area. Bennetts’ team can also event-manage small events, to coordinate everything. Take your office of self-proclaimed chocoholics to Bennetts for your next Christmas function or why not host your bestie’s baby shower and satisfy that chocolate-loving belly.
You may know Bennetts of Mangawhai for their decadent chocolate creations, however it’s worth a trip north of Auckland to explore the beautiful venue they call home. Located in Mangawhai Village, Bennetts’ chocolates is family owned and run, and their flagship store is both luxurious and welcoming. Bennetts open this picturesque venue to all sorts of events; the building itself gives a natural beauty to a wide variety of occasions.
The team at Bennetts also hosts kids’ workshops during school holidays. In class, students sample chocolate, under Bennetts chocolatier Rémi, make their own special chocolate projects and take a tour of the factory. Parents can sample some chocolate too, as the kids get to bring home all their creations. It’s a great way to entertain the kids during school holidays. Bennetts use fresh, local ingredients to create their award-winning product. Their French-inspired style of making chocolates involves a true labour of love. All the more reason to get amongst the chocolatey goodness and consider hosting your next event in this heavenly chocolate box.
The team really loves the space they get to work in and want to utilise this gem even more. Bennetts wants to host your sweetest event yet. and of course, your guests can indulge in the wide variety of mouth-watering chocolates.

Friday 8 June saw the Omaha Beach Golf Club transformed into an Italian Trattoria for the Bayleys Omaha Long Italian Ladies Lunch, raising funds for Make-a-Wish NZ.
Prosecco on arrival followed by antipasto platters and a delicious three course Italian feast complimented with a glass of Montepulciano supplied by OBV.
Presentatore Marnie Perkinson again took charge of the day which had been organised and sponsored by Victoria Turner and Joneen Smith of Bayleys Omaha, in conjunction with the amazing event stylist Annie O of Speakeasy & Barn Door. Everything Italian was included in the design and layout, complimented by the traditional fare cooked by Chefs Tommaso Baldassarri of Amaranto and Mark Griffiths of The Local Food Kitchen. The stunning tableware was generously provided by Melita and Grant Campbell of Carlton Party Hire Matakana Coast.
Laughter and the coming together of friends was the order of the day, with a great array of silent and live auctions donated from numerous local businesses. Total funds raised tipped the scales at just over $12,000 - an astounding achievement for a small community and testament to the generosity of sponsors, guests and all involved.
The 90 ladies attending were treated to Canti

Central to the day was Make-a-Wish, and Bayleys Foundation General Manager Sue Stanaway gave an insight into how the organisation had made dreams a reality and brought hope and joy to hundreds of New Zealand families, whose children face many and varied health challenges.
Mark Macky director of Bayleys in the North said, “Once again this was an outstanding result from a small community with a very big heart. We cherish our ongoing relationship with MakeA-Wish NZ of which The Bayleys Foundation are the elite sponsorship partner, and I want to make special mention of Victoria Turner and Joneen Smith who did a brilliant job making the lunch such a success.

LOVE YOUR HONEY - AND YOUR NEIGHBOUR WORDS
REBECKA
BJELFVENSTAM
KEELING
Winter is the quiet season for beekeepers. Two local enthusiasts are using this time for reflection and education, calling for more sustainable beekeeping practices. Roger Alexander is a familiar face to visitors of the Matakana Village Farmers Market, where he’s been selling his delicious Matakana Honey for the past three years. “Honey from the Matakana Coast is so special because of our beautiful landscape. The valleys have a perfect mix of manuka, kanuka and rewarewa, giving our honey its excellent taste and health benefits,” says Roger. Warkworth apiarist Matthew Wech supplies beehives to hobbyists and is passionate about teaching the art of beekeeping. He wants to educate people about a new threat to beekeepers. “In New Zealand – because of the value of Manuka Honey – we’re starting to see areas with too many bees, and not enough nectar and pollen to go around,” Matthew says. “Big operators are dumping large numbers of beehives into some areas. They don't consider their neighbours. The hobbyist beekeepers and small operators, that only have a few hives on their lifestyle blocks next door, are being robbed. It impacts the amount of honey they get, as well as the health and future of their bees.” “The number of hives in the country has tripled within the past ten years, but the actual output of honey only doubled. We've reached a tipping point,” Matthew says. Roger agrees, saying that like any type of farming, overstocking is an issue with bees. “You can easily see when a farmer has overstocked a paddock – too many cows and not enough grass. It’s harder to know when there’s too many bees and if they’re starving.” To stay sustainable, Roger is not planning to expand or go international. “I love selling at the local market and keeping it boutique to the area.”

MIDLIFE COURAGE
LOVENAILS
2018 has been a very successful year in business for local woman Sharleen Greer. Recently, Sharleen was interviewed on Radio Live, The Long Lunch with Wendyl Nissen and appeared on TV3 - The Café, both in her capacity as a Midlife coach.
While the winter season may remind you of warm cosy blankets and a hot cup of chai, the cold temperatures also bring along dry brittle nails, dehydrated skin, and smudged brow makeup. Whether you require moisturising nail care, a relaxing hydrating facial or just need a permanent solution for your brows, LOVEnails can help with a range of treatments inside their beautiful haven located in the heart of Matakana. We all love a bit of pampering from time to time and the ladies at LOVEnails will do just that. Now go on, soak those feet, pamper away those stresses and give yourself the treatment you deserve! Book your appointment and see the super girls at LOVEnails and Beauty - Nails, Brows, Beauty.
She has been speaking at numerous events including her own event where she gathered 60 women to discuss the highs and lows of midlife. Sharleen works as a Midlife coach and Naturopath and recently has added DoTerra Essential Oils to her business, to help with menopausal wellness. Sharleen has two winter events coming up. July 5 - herself and guest speaker Dr Wendy Sweet will share their knowledge and expertise on midlife and menopause transformation.
LOVEnails top 3 winter tips to care for your nails:
Sharleen will also facilitate a midlife bootcamp - July 27 - 29, there will be an opportunity to discover who you are beyond the roles you have previously played. You will leave with strategies and actions to master your midlife.
2. Use hand crème regularly 3. Wear gloves when outdoors. The dry cold air and wind can take the moisture out of your nails.

A short drive from Matakana on your way to Tawharanui, is the new home of Debbie and Michael Jones; a stunning black and white modern-classic new build, with three bedrooms, office, three bathrooms and a farm shed and minor dwelling. The build started in 2016, with this wonder being home to Debbie and Michael since October 2017. Having previously lived in Havelock North, then the North Shore of Auckland, the Jones’ wanted to live in the country again and be part of a small town community. They chose Matakana to build as the region provided this. “Our dream was to live and build in the country, and Matakana was the perfect choice” says Debbie, new owner of Sotheby’s International Realty Rodney. The house was designed by Adrian Robinson from A Robinson Associates Ltd. Architecture and Interior Design, along with draughtswoman, Sandy Rogers from SJR Architectural Drafting. “The style of the house is classical Hamptons with a twist,” says Debbie. Think of a light and breezy atmosphere that is elegant and sophisticated. When you step through the large, dark, front door, you feel an instant warmth as you’re greeted with an abundance of natural light coming from the open plan living area, overlooking a captivating view of the countryside, Omaha and Little Barrier. The living area features a large raked ceiling, and
opens out to the backyard, which is just the place to entertain, take in the views or enjoy a cuppa. Not to mention, the swimming pool which is waiting to be used come summer. The kitchen hallmarks all the classic Hampton elements, from the beautiful white cabinetry, large island and subway tiles (installed by Jamal Brogan from Bespoke Tiling Solutions Ltd) to the dark floors and double oven. The two large pendant lights are the perfect choice for this kitchen as they add to the drama and scale of the room. There’s no competition for storage or meal prepping space in this kitchen, with the handy butler’s pantry Debbie is so fond of.
beautifully contrast with the white walls. As you walk through each new space, the white is elegantly broken by a selection of statement, art pieces. The set of horse photographs that adorn the secret doorway to the master bedroom, is more than just an aesthetic touch. It is a hint to the story behind the name of the property – Triton. Debbie’s grandfather, World War I veteran, bred the racehorse Triton, which means ‘messenger of the sea’. This work of art beautifully ties the surrounding landscape to the design and the centrality of family within this home.
Next to the kitchen, is another living area Debbie calls ‘The Winter Room’. The room has dark walls and playful, patterned carpet. It’s small, and intimate: “the perfect space to enjoy a good book in front of the steel fireplace,” she says.
The master suite, once again faces the spectacular view. A natural, calming room with feature wallpaper to add a bit of quirkiness and colour. “Everywhere you look in the house, you see the panoramic view, that’s what I love most,” says Debbie. “All the bespoke features make this build unique and we wanted it to be timeless,” she says.
Debbie’s love of designers, Greg Natale and Timothy Oulton’s work, had a significant influence on the interior in this house, with distinctive handcrafted leather furniture adding the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. Scattered on the shelves and entrance table is a collection of glass pieces by Elizabeth McClure, specialist glass artist.
Debbie’s husband Michael is a builder and plumber himself, so it was natural for Michael to project-manage this build with Bridgens Construction and Design as a subcontractor. Building supplies were sourced from local ITM Matakana, and Michael even built a few of the furniture pieces in the house himself “you could say, this house is a bit eclectic,” says Debbie.
The dark, parquet floors throughout the house is a bespoke feature by Floorex Wellsford, which

ARTS
HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS WORDS
“I called it Frolic because I wanted it to be playful, a bit of fun on the side of my main gig,” says Vicki Fanning. Sounds a bit saucy? “I’ve always been quite provocative in my work,”she admits. She’s in her Matakana home studio creating new silicone and glass art pieces (definitely sexy), as we discuss the ceramic tableware business she began in 2014. Frolic Ceramics was created to fund Vicki’s fine art practice and be easy to produce, enabling more time with son Sam. But although it’s a relatively high-production scenario, each piece is handled around 12 times, and Vicki likes to highlight the handmade process by celebrating bumps and drips as beautiful imperfections. Vicki did a degree in ceramics and glass at Auckland Unitec in the early nineties (she and her partner, artist Mike Petre, met there). Art and travel was funded through catering, gardening, pottery work and art school life-modelling. She catered film shoots, including King Kong and The Water Horse. “I made Naomi Watts a birthday

cake during King Kong – hazelnut with chocolate ganache!” she says nostalgically. 2001 saw her getting art-serious at Whanganui Polytech, with subsequent works exhibited nationally and in Australia, Oregon and Denmark; she’s been a three-time finalist in the Australasian Ranamok Glass Prize. Vicki’s trademark is flamework – shaping thousands of snippets of clear glass by blowtorch and attaching them to playful items – blankets, cushions, teddy bears, big knives and yes, Viking weaponry. Vicki loves the contradictory nature of glass. “It’s solid but liquid, it can both protect and be dangerous... We could say we’re now in the glass age, since it enables all the technology we’re totally reliant on, from screens to fibre optics and lenses.” Vicki’s recent work, ‘User Generated Content’ is informed by this concept – sleek, ceramic torsos with undeniably sensual bumps and holes which suggest the mirror-selfies of gym bunnies on social media. Vicki had a charmed childhood in Kaipara Flats
and Mahurangi East with her twin sister and another set of twin siblings. Her parents were ‘makers’. “Mum hooked rugs, spun and knitted. Dad built everything, including boats, while working at the Satellite Station. And they were both major gardeners.” Vicki inherited the gardening gene in er, spades, as evidenced by her vegetable garden, massed hydrangeas and the glorious dahlias she sells in summer. Vicki and Mike’s cleverly renovated 120-year-old farmhouse, stuffed with art, is regularly visited by busloads of visitors for fundraisers (there’s a Hospice Homes Tour in November). “I try to be creatively holistic about my work, the garden and food. So for a tour, or a Frolic sale day, I’ll put flowers in the jugs, nibbles on the platters; I like to get it all going on.” A recent collaboration with Kensal Flower Studio saw jugs bursting with meadow flowers sold as Mother’s Day gifts. As a cook, Vicki knows the colours that work with food – matt charcoal, shiny grey, soft raspberry,

cool teal. Alongside classic platters, bowls, plates, cups and jugs, she invents clever niche items – ceramic microgreens containers for example, which solve the practical and aesthetic problems of leaky plastic packs. There are new cake stands, and some simple, chunky candleholders. Vicki reminds herself that she went back to ceramics to enable her art and family life. “It’s got to work for me, and it’s got to be fun!” she declares. But far from being a frolic on the side, it’s entirely possible that this business could quietly run riot. Frolic stockists: Tea & Tonic, Matakana Village and Madder and Rouge, Newmarket. Ladies’ Long Italian Lunch
Photos: Kate Little Photography
With huge generosity and support from the local community, Joneen Smith and Victoria Turner of Bayleys Omaha raised $12,000 for Make-A-Wish NZ at our Long Italian Ladies Lunch held recently at the Omaha Beach Golf Club. We would like to thank everyone who attended, our key supporters and those who donated items, time and services to make the event such a fantastic success. We can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
Thanks for your support
