NEW LOOK FOR CLASSIC CAMPGROUND WORDS KATHY
Pakiri Beach Holiday Park is about to begin a whole new chapter in its long life. The lovely old campground has lots of exciting new changes afoot that will bring it up to date without relinquishing its old-school charm. Owned by the Hay family (of Keith Hay Homes) for 35 years, many of its happy campers have been coming here for generations. Now new business manager Rachel Macfarlane (of Wharf Street Bistro fame) has been instructed to upgrade, so she’s rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in. “We’re painting and refurbishing the inside of the general store so campers and locals can stock up with a solid range of basics, and we’re keen for local producers to get in touch. We also plan to install a coffee machine, which we think will be quite popular!” says Rachel. “The TV room has become a small theatre complete with red velvet curtains, and families staying here have already had fun staging their own shows to great hilarity.”

Rachel’s passionate about sustainability and plans are underway to reduce park waste significantly – and to install a refill station for eco-friendly cleaning and cosmetic products. Conservation is high on the list too, since critically endangered NZ fairy tern and dotterel nest at Pakiri. DOC’s efforts to educate the public to avoid nests and chicks over spring are backed up by the holiday park team. But wait, there’s more. The popular family cottages along the waterfront have been given a gorgeous makeover and the team are taking delivery this month of a shipment from Holland containing a safari-style glamping tent, complete with ensuite bathroom, kitchen and luxury bedding. “Glamping is a world-wide trend that I’ve been interested in for years,” says Rachel. “The riverfront location is stunning and if all goes well, we’ll install more tents for group accommodation.
We’ll make space for a marquee and a fire-pit too – perfect for beach weddings or corporate retreats.” The Pakiri Beach Holiday Park team is keen for locals to join them this summer. For a nominal visitor’s fee you can have your own holiday park experience. “At high tide, the big waterslide into the estuary is fantastic fun; so are the kayaks and new stand-up paddle boards. And if the tide’s out, our jumping pillow is brilliant. Bring a picnic and watch the sunset from your dinner table.” The campground has always been proud of its spectacular location perched above the estuary, dunes and white sands of Pakiri. “There’s a great vibe here,” says Rachel, “and it’s an easy drive via Matakana Valley Road now that the hill is sealed. Bring the family – we can accommodate every budget and we’d love to see you!” www.pakiriholidaypark.co.nz

PROFILE
GARRY 'THE POTTER' SMITH WORDS
Mangawhai potter Gary Smith loves to tell stories and the one that best sums up his attitude on life involves a large amphora he had made. An ancient jar-like piece of pottery used mainly for storage. “It was beautiful,” Smith recalls. “It was really well balanced and had the classical amphora shape. I was interested in the use of these forms by the Greeks and Romans, so I really wanted to understand how these things were put together. “I had it in the shop on a tripod and one day I made the mistake of putting it out on a windy morning. I was serving a lady in the shop and the pot fell over and smashed. I went outside and the

first thing I did was laugh. The customer looked at me and thought ‘what is it with this guy’. But I had to laugh because what else you could do? So I dug a hole and buried the thing. Then I made myself some coffee, put some cool music on the stereo and I got myself in a good mood and I ended up selling a lot of stuff that day. I didn’t let myself get into that negative space.” For as much as Garry loves making his distinctive plates, platters, vases and other items of homeware, he will not let the odd mishap get him down, even when a potential buyer for the smashed amphora emerged a few months later.
“I have to do things that make me happy, because my mental health is entirely important to me,” he says. “So I live a happy life – I never come down here with a heavy heart.” Smith came to Mangawhai more than 30 years ago and has been doing pottery since 1989. Before taking it up full-time, he had worked in a wide variety of jobs. As well as building, he has driven heavy machinery and worked as a well driller and a linesman, for the Electricity Board. He says he came to pottery largely by accident, although he had always been interested in clay.

“Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees and you’re not picking up on the messages that you are getting,” Smith muses. “A friend of mine said one day ‘Would you like to throw a pot’ and I thought that’s cool. From the start, it felt right. I felt like I had done it before – sometimes I feel 1,000 potters’ lives flow through mine.” Smith and his partner Vanessa Hunter have been operating Mangawhai Pottery from their current premises in Insley Street since 2013 and while they won’t be retiring on their business profits anytime soon, they couldn’t be happier. As well as selling his works, Smith has run pottery courses
for school kids and says, “In Wellsford, I went into the classroom and I took all the clay I had prepared. I said, ‘We’re going to make whatever you like! But the most important thing you have to do here, is have fun and be kind to each other.”
challenges and I wasn’t sure how people would take it. But they seem to love it. I like to give people something to laugh about - laughter is a good thing and I get a buzz out of creating it.”
Most recently there has been his ‘Give It A Go’ social media video series, in which he challenges fellow local business folk to try their hand on the potting wheel and he in return has a stab at doing one of their jobs. And his philosophy of life applies there, too. “They are very tongue in cheek and a bit of slapstick,” he says. “I stuff it up when it comes to their

ISLAND LIFE WORDS
“We’ve got to make people realise this place is a world-class destination,” says our guide as we rattle along a dirt road. “And getting here is all part of the adventure!” There’s sparkling surf curling in the bay to our left, jagged mountains behind us, and a weka diving into the flax bushes in front of us. We all nod enthusiastically. Strapping ourselves into the 13-seater Cessna Caravan that morning felt quite adventurous, but the Barrier Air flight was smooth, incident-free and utterly spectacular. Who knew there were so many islands in the Hauraki Gulf? It’s common to spot pods of whales and dolphins too. The Junction team is on Great Barrier Island (or Aotea as it’s increasingly called), and our guide is Danvers Devereux, owner of Matakana Botanicals. Danvers is a passionate advocate of this place; it inspired him to create the ‘Great Barrier Island Bee Co’ range of bodycare products which feature island ingredients such as manuka honey and manuka oil. 2018 is the 10th anniversary of this

range, and the 30th anniversary of Matakana Botanicals and Danvers is preparing to celebrate these milestones on the island with a bit of a do; he’s welcomed everywhere like a prodigal son.
tending their enormous vege garden and orchard; Danvers used to camp on their farm as a teenager. He named his ‘Gardener’s Handcream’ in honour of Les.
We pick up our SUV from the lovely ladies at Great Barrier Wheels, and we’re off. First stop, the wacky delights of the Milk, Honey and Grain Museum, where David Watson curates a treasure trove of early island history, lavishly embellished with his own witty repartee. Turns out honey was the island’s first export – to Europe – back in the late 1800s.
Next stop is over to Tryphena to check out the famous Currach Irish pub, owned by Maire Burns and Phil Judd. Maire still has her County Kerry accent and she likes a laugh. “I was brought up in my grandmother’s pub, so I know this game well. But we’re representing ‘brand Ireland’ here, so we’re determined to make it authentic.” The Currach won a major award last year from the Irish Pub Oscars in Dublin, so they’re doing something right. Lush sub-tropical plantings, an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven and a garden bar shaded by giant pohutakawa ensures summer popularity.
Two of the first beekeeping families were the Osbornes and the Blackwells. Charlie Osborne only had one arm but it was said he got more done with one than most did with two. As well as harvesting honey and beeswax, those early pioneers were multi-taskers, milking cows and sheep, market gardening, building, taking in guests… similar to many residents now, in fact. Les and Bev Blackwell are still on the island,
At Medlands Beach we sneak a peek at some island accommodation. There’s plenty, from basic DOC camping to the high-end Oruawharo Cottage, a sleek black box designed by Fearon

Hay, with jaw-dropping views of the flax-fringed, turquoise bay. Down on the dunes, we meet with Deborah Kilgallon, co-owner with Hilde Hoben of ‘Good Heavens’. They craft ‘dark sky experiences’ on Medlands Beach: as you lie back in your moon chair with a hot chocolate, they’ll show you the southern stars as you’ve never seen them before, using laser pointers, binoculars and large portable telescope. Great Barrier/Aotea is the newest of only four certified dark sky sanctuaries on the planet – and the darkest. Bespoke training from the Royal Astronomical Society of NZ has made Deborah and Hilde Dark Sky Ambassadors for the sanctuary. Lunch at the aptly-named ‘My Fat Puku’ back at Claris is delicious (excellent coffee is noted) and
thus replenished, and after lunch we totter over to the local art gallery which is well-stocked with metalwork, woodcarvings, kete, paintings and more.
Matakana residents Clive and Angeline, and overlooks gorgeous Whangaparapara Bay. You’ll find an excellent pictorial timeline of local history down at the wharf. The lodge is currently hosting a conference, but come Friday guests and locals alike converge on the verandah for happy hour.
We head north in the SUV to Whangaparapara, but there are other ways to get about. Chris Ollivier, owner of ‘Hooked on Barrier’ creates coastal adventures aboard the lovely 11m Sundancer. Learn about Aotea’s whaling history, see the gannet colony, swim, snorkel, fish, dive or paddleboard in crystal waters rich in marine life. Or maybe you’d like Steve Billingham of Crazyhorse Tours to whizz you anywhere you’d like to go on the back of his outrageous motor-trike – Steve does a great yarn and is a bona-fide top bloke.

We head back to Claris Airport tired but inspired. And there’s so much more – the three-day Aotea walk for starters, or the Kaitoke hot springs. And the Fitzroy Mussel Festival on 5 January – now that’ll be a party. Our advice? Spend as long as you can on Great Barrier/Aotea. It’s another world. The Junction team were guests of Barrier Air.

WAIPU GLAMPING WORDS
Nestled in the hills of Waipu lies a slice of paradise that will satiate the soul with tranquility and create magical memories. Waipu Glamping provides the perfect space to relax and unwind. It is far away from the madding crowd, yet close enough to venture out and enjoy the raft of activities in this beautiful coastal town. The native bush provides an idyllic setting for the sights and sounds of nature; birdsong from kiwi, kereru and tuis and a heavenly canvas of stars at night to enjoy with your partner for a romantic getaway or a holiday for a family - including the dog if you want. Brian and Barbara knew this location could be a sanctuary, an ideal holiday spot, but hadn’t been able to find the type of accommodation to provide for an experience, as opposed to just somewhere to stay. That was until the fateful Field Days in
PHILIPPA
ROSS
June 2016 when Barbara saw the Safari tents. “I was spellbound. The ambience of the simple, rustic, luxurious tents was enchanting - an impeccable match for what we wanted to offer. I was on a high. No longer the reluctant partner who’d agreed to traipse around a mass of machinery. My head was whirling with ideas to bring our dream to fruition.” It’s been a real, family affair pulling the project together. Brian and his sons honed their carpentry and electrical skills, building the deck, a separate bathroom, outside bath and installing solar panels. Barbara has had fun sourcing furnishings to create a homely environment, then has turned her hand to creating a website, marketing, photography and getting to grips with social media, with the help of her daughters. It has been a steep, but rewarding learning curve.
Now they’re ready. Everything is in place, right down to the small veggie and herb garden next to the tent, so people can pick fresh food. The chickens have their orders to keep laying so there will be a good supply of free-range eggs. Barbara is a bit of a diva in the kitchen too, so you can add on some opulent extras to your stay and ask her to prepare some homemade granola for breakfast, pack a picnic for lunch and/or prepare a platter to savour as you prepare your evening meal. The couple are now looking forward to welcoming guests to breathe life into their dream and create cherished moments.

DON’T FISH TO ESCAPE LIFE, FISH TO LIVE LIFE!
Tony Orton and Bea Bagnall have immersed their lives in fishing and guiding. Tony has over 20 years experience as a professional fishing guide/ captain and for nine of those years Bea and Tony have travelled the world, as guides to the rich and not-so-famous. Now, with a four-year-old and another on the way, life has changed for the travelling duo. Six years ago a plan was made to construct a purpose-built fishing lodge at Mangawhai Heads
which would offer boutique fishing adventures out to the stunning Mokohinau Island to target the aggressive Kingfish. Tony has brought a lot of techniques learnt overseas, to his local Mangawhai fishery. The charters are all about using well appointed vessels with the best quality and latest equipment. During the summer months they run Kingfish clinics, which show the passion they have for teaching and sharing. Tony is all about
sustainable fishing and is always learning new ways to look after the Mokohinau fishery. His methods include the use of circle hooks, lowered boat limits and non-anchoring while fishing, to protect the seafloor. It is now normal for Offshore Adventures summer season in Mangawhai, to be fully booked five months before the summer has even started. During the winter months the family packs their bags and heads offshore to guide fishing
Happy hour - Friday from 4pm till 7pm Every Friday (until Christmas) it’s happy hour at the Smoko Room. Any jug for $25 + free bitterballen with every jug. Bitterballen are like croquettes, but way better - served with mustard and aioli.

adventures overseas. For May to September each year the family takes Kiwis to fish in some of the world’s best fishing destinations such as Cabo San Lucas, México, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Canada and even Oman in the Middle East, where there are monster tuna. The trips are set up so that individuals or small groups can join in these fully guided trips. The affordable packages typically include five days of fishing, seven nights accommodation and airport transfers, which
leaves the angler the easy job of just turning up to the airport on time. Tony and Bea take away over 90 adventurers, anglers and non-anglers each year. “We really pride ourselves that we have fished all the destinations many times before we even take guests there so we can ensure the best experience on and off the water. We want our guests to walk away from their adventure blown away; ticking off a bucket-list species, having learnt something
new and in the process making new friends. This is what fishing is all about for us.” Check out their video channel from their amazing fishing adventures at www.youtube.com/c/ JourneyofaFisherman.

TI POINT ROCK CLIMBING WORDS
Nestled among pohutukawa trees on the eastern tip of Ti Point are rugged sea cliffs that are a popular destination for rock climbers. While the cliffs are not as large as the epic faces found in mountains and elsewhere, Ti Point is popular due to its favourable weather, picturesque scenery and proximity to Auckland. The first recorded climbing expeditions to Ti Point were in the 1970s and the crag has now grown to have over 40 unique routes. There are a mix of ‘sport’ style climbs (with pre-placed bolts) and ‘traditional’ style climbs (where climbers place protection in the rock themselves as they ascend). There are many quality routes at the crag, but probably the best one is known as ‘The Fang’. It starts on a small boulder jutting out into the sea and can only be accessed at low tide. Avoid the barnacles and make your way up the face as waves crash in below you. Keep an eye on the condition of the bolts, as the salt water can corrode them

and make the climb unsafe. Near the top you will reach a short, but intimidating, section of overhanging rock. This will require a cool head to navigate, but if you persevere the fantastic views from the top will be more than worth it! Obviously rock climbing is not for the faint of heart, so it is important that you have the appropriate experience to climb here. At present there are no professionally guided climbing tours to Ti Point, so if you want to climb here your best bet would be to join a climbing group and learn how to climb (for example the Auckland section of the New Zealand Alpine Club). Another alternative, if you don’t want to go to all that effort is to go for a walk down the Ti Point coastal walkway, a picturesque outing in its own right. You might spot some climbers on the cliffs, or better yet some of the local wildlife such as dolphins, may make a showing.
The Ti Point coastal walkway is best accessed from the end of Ti Point Road, 15 minutes drive from Matakana. The walkway takes one to two hours return depending on fitness levels and can easily be done in walking shoes and you will get views to the south of Omaha and Tawharanui Regional Park. The walkway does not quite go all the way to where the climbing cliffs are. So from the end of the walking trail head up the hill (north) following the fence line until you reach a stile. After crossing the stile, descend the hill onto the eastern coast of Ti Point and then the large cliffs should be easy to spot.

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED WALK
Recognised by Lonely Planet as one of their choices for New Zealand’s top short tramps, the Mangawhai Cliff Walk is an experience anyone with moderate levels of fitness should explore. The high-grade track, maintained by DOC, enjoys an outstanding coastal panorama from Bream Head and the Poor Knights to the North, to Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel to the South.
through gullies of nikau and pohutukawa. At the trail end your path descends steeply to a rocky bay, complete with a massive rock archway. From there your route south explores boulder strewn, shingle beaches and secluded bays, until you reach the northern end of Mangawhai Heads beach.
The walk begins at the Mangawhai Heads Surf Club carpark and follows the sandy beach to the North. Look for a DoC sign in the dunes, after about 15 to 20 minutes, which marks the formal start of the track. Leaving the beach you will rapidly climb a steep track and several staircases; take a breather at the first lookout and enjoy the extensive views before you. From there the track weaves along the vertiginous cliff edge
Do allow at least three hours to leisurely complete the circuit, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water, especially in the summer.
26
Some dos and don’ts:
Don’t get caught the section from the rock archway to Mangawhai Heads beach is accessible only at low tide. If the water is surging through the archway you will need to retrace your steps via the cliff top
Look for a sign to the left of the track before descending to the rocky bay, showing the Missing Link track, part of the Te Araroa National Walkway leading to Cove Road. Mangawhai Cliff Walk continues to be one of the most popular guided events of the Mangawhai Walking Weekend. The March 2019 weekend of walks, entertainment and fine food and wine, celebrates its twentieth year. Online bookings will open 4 January 2019, with the event running from 28 to 31 March. TI POINT REPTILE PARK Head to the Ti Point Reptile Park for a fascinating trip into the lives of cold-blooded animals at the only zoo in New Zealand specialising in reptiles. Set in regenerating bush with the plentiful sea views, you’ll find water dragons, chameleons, iguanas, turtles, alligators and even tarantulas… plus of course our own living dinosaur, the tuatara. There’s lots of information to be gleaned from a visit to the Reptile Park. For instance: there are only two families of lizard in New Zealand – all are either geckos or skinks. Skinks’ scales overlap, making them shiny, whereas gecko scales don’t – they have a velvety, matt look (very now!).

FOR THE LOVE OF A DAME WORDS CHRISTINE
Sally Dawson and Chris Moreton never planned to take up country life. The pair, both real estate agents, were happy in the city until a client purchased a four bay Victorian villa on a rear site in Greenlane, believed to have once belonged to Sir John Logan Campbell. The property was to be redeveloped into three dwellings, and Sally and Chris agreed the elegant homestead was too good to be demolished. Born in the UK, Chris was an antique importer and dealer for many years. “The love of Victorian

heritage is in his genes,” says Sally. Still, he took her by surprise when he declared he had always wanted to move a house’. So began a three-month search for a piece of land worthy of the grand old dame. The couple scanned the coast from Mangawhai Heads to Coromandel, eventually settling on a three acre plot on Takatu Ridge with views to the north stretching from Mount Tamahunga across Omaha to Little Barrier, and to the south over farmland to Kawau Bay and Moturekareka Island. Back in Greenlane, the attic bedroom had to be

craned off the top, and the house sliced into three to keep the ornate pressed tin ceilings intact. “It didn’t seem daunting at the time,” says Sally. Besides the couple had no intention of keeping the house. It was purely an investment. Or so they thought. But as they worked away, removing brick chimneys, lifting granite pavers and carefully chipping up the original decorative hearth tiles one-by-one, their attachment to the old girl grew. “We never had any hired help,” says Sally. “It was a true labour of love.”
The painstaking - and virtually seamless reconstruction of the house took six miserably wet winter and spring months. With a fresh coat of white paint, a modern kitchen, and careful reinstatement of chandeliers, fire surrounds and pavers, the home became the perfect blank canvas for the couple’s extensive and eclectic collection of art and antiques. Treasures bought at auction over the years, like the crimson and gold antique brocade curtains that adorn the front bedroom and sitting room, made their way out of storage to be joined by new finds from a fortuitous ‘house lot’ sale on
Auckland’s North Shore. The lot contained enough to fill much of the villa, including silk rugs, china cabinets, elegant furniture, and a collection of portraits of Maori chiefs, warriors and maidens. Sally’s favourite piece is a large tekoteko figure, standing guard in the hallway over visiting booka-bach guests. With the rear deck and pergola completed in time for the couple’s wedding last year, the house situated midway between a coffee in Matakana and an ice-cream at the OOB blueberry farm turned out to be too good to leave. The couple now split their time between Auckland
and Villa Takatu. “It’s so tranquil here. We love watching the kingfishers and the plovers, or enjoying the sunset to the west,” says Sally. “And the tide is always good somewhere for fishing.”

SPRING CLEAN WORDS
“The key reason we do the beach clean, is to actively give back to the environment that we work in,” Lydia Green of Saltwater Eco tells me. It’s about staying true to their company motto – Surf, Snorkel, Sustain. “A big part of our business is starting the conversation about people’s connection with the ocean and what they can do to protect it. We try to help them understand that their lives are not separate from what is going on in the environment. If everyone does a little bit, it makes a big difference.” You, dear readers, can make that big difference by coming along to Saltwater Eco’s annual Omaha beach clean on Saturday 24 November, 2-4pm, gathering at the park alongside the surf life saving club. Bags and gloves will be supplied.

Lydia explains, “We start with a short, marine education session where we talk about plastics, and microplastics in particular. Then we split everyone into groups and get them to clean up for an hour in designated zones at the beach and boat ramp – there is always lots of rubbish there. We then go through all the rubbish and recycle, repurpose and reuse what we can, and we record everything for a National Marine Litter database. We finish up with a thanks to our sponsors and a prize draw for the volunteers.”
will get properly underway towards the end of October. Programs will be running for the school holidays and there are after-school programs for surfing and snorkelling. “We also run women’s surf lessons and surf camps and we’re hoping to run an overseas surf retreat for women in the shoulder season,” says Lydia. With their own eco-friendly merchandise on sale this summer and plans for an eventual move to their own ‘cool surf shack’, it’s looking like a sustainable future for Saltwater Eco.
Lydia says they generally get around 30-50 people, depending on the weather, but it would be great to outdo that this year. Saltwater Eco is about to launch into its fifth summer season. Surf lessons have begun and will run until the beginning of June and snorkelling

SYLVIA'S ESPRESSO AND REAL FRUIT ICE CREAM
Cat loves travelling and can talk about it all day! Travelling, being in the garden and the great outdoors is where she draws her inspiration from. Cat came to New Zealand from Scotland, aged 18 for a gap year and after nearly ten years, five towns and six months of overseas travel was ready for a new challenge. She found a way to combine her love of coffee, baking and travel in a mobile business, and so Sylvia’s coffee cart was born. Lemon & Olive Oil Cake Light, soft and oh so moist, the perfect accompaniment to summer afternoon tea or your next dinner party. Ingredients 250ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil (high quality preferred) 3 large Free-Range Eggs 300ml Whole Milk 2 Tbsp Lemon Zest (unwaxed) 1 tbsp Lemon Juice 2 cups Granulated White Sugar 2 cups Plain Flour
• Sieve the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into the bowl with the sugar and lightly whisk to combine • In a large deep bowl add the oil, eggs, lemon juice and milk. Beat with a hand mixer for 2 minutes on low speed • Fold the flour mix into the egg mix until just combined • Divide into the pans
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
• Bake 30-35 minutes on the middle rack until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. (Cover with tin foil half way if the tops begin to brown)
1/2 tsp Salt
• Check the cake at 30 minutes - as every oven bakes a little bit differently
Method
• Cool completely before removing from the tins
Preheat oven to 160oC
Fill and top cake with buttercream icing (we used a vanilla bean and lemon one here) and garnish with rose and calendula petals and thyme flowers. Tag Sylvia’s on instagram or Facebook @sylvias_espresso with your own versions! www.facebook.com/sylvias-espresso
1 tsp Baking Powder
• Grease and line 2 x 8-inch cake pans • In a medium sized bowl add the sugar and lemon zest, rub with your fingertips until fragrant to release the oils.

MCLEOD’S BREWERY & PIZZA BARN
Brothers Geoff and Clayton Gwynne had travelled the world and tasted good beer. In fact, American craft beer left its mark on the duo with both favouring the robust, hoppy, modern India Pale Ales (IPAs) and Pale Ales that country is known for. So it was only natural when, after owning Waipu’s iconic Pizza Barn for nearly 15 years, they longed to give stock-standard beer the boot and take a shot at brewing on site. That was 2014, and McLeod’s Brewery, while filling the taps, was yet to take on the lustre of its present-day incarnation under the watchful eye – and palate – of Head Brewer Jason Bathgate. Since Jason (an expat American with a shared loved of hop-driven beer) took the helm in 2016, the tiny (1000 HL) village brewery has gone from strength to strength. Aside from a bevy of medals and a trophy in 2017 for their flagship beer – Longboarder Lager - the brewery’s Paradise
Pale Ale was voted 2017’s Beer of the Year by the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA), a national organisation dedicated to the appreciation of New Zealand craft beer (aka beer geeks). It was a huge win for the team not solely for the distinction but because the tiny brewery knocked Upper Hutt’s Panhead Brewery off the throne they’d held for three straight years. Aside from core range and seasonal styles any beer lover would adore, McLeod’s has fast become known for its Smugglers Bay Collection of barrelaged and funkier brews: mixed fermentation or ‘sour beers’ that get time with ‘good bugs’ like brettanomyces in retired wine and whisky barrels before being blended. It’s an old-world technique championed by breweries worldwide and made popular here at home by the likes of Warkworth’s 8 Wired Brewing and Oamaru’s Craftwork Brewery.
The beloved Pizza Barn - in all its tartan glory - serves as the brewery’s official tasting room and locals have embraced it wholeheartedly. Alongside swoon-worthy gourmet pizzas, the taps are brimming with a range of beers usually only reserved for New Zealand’s hippest independent pubs. Unsurprisingly, it’s also a stop of interest in the country’s growing beer tourism scene with aficionados popping in daily for tasting platters. A flagon fillery is in the works (set to launch at the beginning of December 2018) which means summer in this quaint Northland surf village just got sweeter.

IAIN CHEESMAN WORDS
KATHY
HUNTER

CRAIG
RAY
In Iain Cheesman’s first major solo show at the Vivian Gallery, you’ll find lots of seemingly random words. They’re punched into felt or animal hides and pinned to the wall with arrows, or wittily spelled out using found objects on shelves. He’s also launching his third little book of poetry to go with the exhibition. Vivian director Scott Law-rie says, “Iain’s a genius at combining the power of words with delightfully original visual cues.” Where do the words come from? They’re influenced, among other things, by Iain’s life-long love of poetry, by his fascination with Colin McCahon’s word paintings, and by the way social media ‘prunes’ our words, “to give us the urgency we need for modern living”. Iain also remembers the power of something he saw as a boy in the Christ-church Museum: a biscuit tin with a desperate message punched into the metal by castaways from a stricken whaling ship in the early 1900s. But there’s deeper meaning in Iain’s enigmatic messages: by punching holes in his art or shooting it with arrows, he’s deliberately vandalising it in a way – it’s a form of self-deprecation, so that both he and the art remember to stay grounded.
42
He’s gently poking fun, both at himself and at the wider art world. “Conceptual art does have at its heart some serious topics, mine included, but even that seriousness is somehow comical to me. I think of my work as visual stand-up, really,” he says. The huge ‘idiots’ word-sculpture in pinkpainted stainless steel in the Vivian carpark is a classic. “It refers to myself more than anyone,” Iain smiles, “but we’re all in this together….” Iain was born in the UK but grew up in North Canterbury. As a kid, his family were makers of textiles, paintings, pottery – his grandmother, a weaver, went to woodwork classes aged 70 and made beautiful turned wooden bowls. It affected the young Iain than he realised. “At the time I thought, ‘I’m not going to be an artist, you never make any money.’ I wanted a proper job, so I became an electrical engineer. But after 15 years I found myself at art school in the UK.” He came back to Otago University to paint, but ended up a sculptor, albeit one with paint-erly and literary inclinations. “A lot of the art I make has its foundations in learned practice from my grandmother, my mother and my father,” says Iain. This exhibition incorporates emotive materials: the wool felt reminds him of his grandmother and there are tools in some works which belonged to his dad. It’s a family show: Iain’s partner Sarah, who’s a surgeon, has participated too – her delicate embroidery features in some of the works. As well as being a Vivian artist, Iain has become the main technician there, hanging and arranging much of the work. “He has the best eye in the business, we’re incredibly lucky to have him,” says Scott. This show is entitled ‘tHe’. “‘The’ is a word full of potential,” Iain says. “The… what? The capital ‘H’ making ‘He’ is the kind of word-within-a-word I enjoy, but it adds another dimension. It’s the 125th anniversary of women get-ting the vote – maybe it’s time to acknowledge being male in some way...” Iain’s ‘random’ words might be the stripped essence of a few lines of poetry, or perhaps a snatched phrase over-heard on the street. They encourage interpretation and imagination. Come and decide what they mean to you. Meanwhile in the Studio Gallery, Elizabeth McClure shows a mix of new glass vessels which are a twist on her ear-lier 'dapple' works where layers of coloured enamel are applied over multiple firings on simple forms, includ-ing some kiwi classics. Elizabeth also has covered one wall with elegant, layered glass shapes, cleverly put togeth-er, which play mesmerisingly with light and shadow. Finally, in the South Gallery, Melbourne painter Nicholas Ives (the latest member of the Vivian family, who also shows in Berlin and Florence) exhibits some of his darkly humorous paintings. There’s a dreamy, carnival feeling here and it’s a great taster for his solo show coming up in February next year.

Thank you to the 2,500 wonderful people who came to celebrate the Mahurangi Oyster season, along with our local wineries and producers. The sun was shining, wine and beer flowing, a delicious range of food on offer, awesome live music and kids entertainment. Thank you to all the vendors, volunteers and helpers who made the festival a magical day. Check out more images from the day at www.facebook.com/oysterfestmatakana www.oysterfestmatakana.co.nz

HAPPENINGS MANGAWHAI GARDEN RAMBLE - A GREAT FAMILY DAY OUT As this wonderful local event comes to life again, mark Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 November in your calendar. This year there are over 19 fabulous gardens to tour, including 10 never been seen before. Ranging from compact to expansive, some established and some ever-evolving works in progress. Always a great family day out with plenty of children’s activities planned. This is an important fundraiser for both the local Plunket and Kindergarten groups, so it’s a great way to show community support. Tickets to go on sale on the 15 October and can be found at local outlets. Follow our Facebook page @mangwhaigardenramble for important updates. Photo credit: Josie Gritton
