SPOTLIGHT
A CHANCE TO SHINE WITH ONE OH NINE
Forever grateful for the mentors, role models and business training that she received as part of her career, local Mangawhai resident Carol has embarked on a mission to pay it forward. Through her 20 year career in IT and Consumer Electronics, she has gained extensive experience in all aspects of business. “It has taken me a number of years to embrace my story, to believe in myself, and to feel enough when surrounded by people who are more ‘qualified’ than me,” she says. After a couple of years of being sponsored into Senior Women in Leadership courses, the passion to give back was ignited and ‘One Oh Nine’ was born. “Our mission was to simply share business knowledge that enables people to pursue their passions – whatever that support may look like,” says Carol.
4
After initially offering a range of services from mentoring, coaching and marketing through to practical advice and grants Carol quickly realised she was going to struggle to scale her vision. To successfully be able to support more businesses she would need to find a way to scale both her services and the ability to offer financial support to start-ups. She tapped into the resources she had through her IT background and looked at options to bring the social enterprise to life online and make the service accessible to more New Zealand small businesses at minimal cost, whilst generating revenue to support more grants. “I am very passionate about giving small business the tools to allow them to look and feel like big business. I have been lucky to launch successful start-up businesses through my career, but it’s
been with the backing of a corporate. Through my husband’s small, local business I quickly realised the responsibility once you start hiring employees - you literally become responsible for both their and their family’s well-being. We wanted to find a way to simplify ‘starting out’ and genuinely help where we could.” Through their online service they bring insights from the corporate world back to hungry Kiwi businesses. If you don’t know how to start growing your business, One Oh Nine can help. They understand research is exhausting, and the vision is to be the one-stop-shop for all the tools, content and networks to get going. The team at One Oh Nine know that equal access to tools and resources to start your dream career are key. “We get a kick out of seeing
Carol with Natasha from One Oh Nine Events entrepreneurs succeed with good ideas followed through with some old-fashioned dedication.” One Oh Nine Events was the first recipient of the grant as Carol was inspired by Natasha’s story of triumph overcoming diversity. Before moving to the coastal town of Mangawhai, Natasha was an accomplished regional Manager for a highend fashion brand in Auckland. She had a team, worked with a diverse group of customers, was incredibly creative and business savvy. “Tash had a real passion to start an events business, she studied, got qualified, researched and in theory was ready to go,” says Carol.
“But then the ‘imposter syndrome’ kicked in – was she good enough for this? Could she really make the impact to be successful? Could she find the balance she needed to cover one of her key values, family?” Her inner critic said no, she didn’t have the skills, time or money. However, with a bit of coaching, support and practical business advice she has created an amazing business in Mangawhai focusing on weddings, corporate and private events. “I am firm believer in taking a chance on someone - if you can see passion and drive in them the potential is there,” says Carol.
“I love being along for the journey, enabling people to bring their dreams to life is the reason we started One Oh Nine.”

CHAOS THEORY WORDS KATHY
Lou’s from Kaiwaka but her lust for life has taken her all over the globe. Her curly blonde hair is invariably wild, her jeans are covered in paint and charcoal, she has kind blue eyes and a huge grin. Lou, and her partner and their two teenagers live in a big black shed in Pakiri, which is evolving into a stylish home and studio. Lou’s new body of work, entitled ‘Unmonument’, is a new angle for her. It’s sculpture, but not the fractured wood on board which her many clients know and love. “It all comes from the same place, though,” she says. Over the years, Lou has had

to deal with much heartbreak – the death of her brother and later, of her husband. There was emotional breakdown at the time; her creative response was to break stuff up. Finally, there was breakthrough. “The broken paintings were way more interesting and beautiful. I’ve always been clumsy, it’s a family joke. But destroying things with purpose felt great – an honest response to the world of ‘perfection,’ that I’d never been part of.” Perfect. The very word annoys her. “Perfection is very rarely possible, and the pursuit of it brings anxiety. Accident, mistake, failure – these words generate fear, but I see them as fertile – opportunity germinators. We need to understand that collapse is not just an end but a beginning, and an opportunity to make something new.”

Lou expanded this concept for her Master's degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2015. Being a speaker at the 2017 Decon and Reuse Expo in Portland, Oregon was a further catalyst, forcing her to examine her personal thought processes and present them to a non-art audience. It was hard, but valuable. This new work still references ‘opportunity from collapse’, but from a larger perspective. Monuments are about status, usually massive, impressive, sombre, often phallic… “usually made for men, about men,” she says. Lou Unmonuments, with their small bases and colourful, wobbling chunks of concrete, are their antithesis. Public erections around NZ are often based around notions of empire and war. There’s one in Matakana: a statue of George V which
periodically has its head nicked by local wags, igniting community outrage. Lou thinks it’s healthy. “I’m not condoning vandalism, but I feel that the time has come to ask about ‘meaning’ for colonial, patriarchal monuments. As well as commemoration, they represent a bunch of ideas which we should be questioning. And what do we want our new monuments to be about? Look at Sky Tower, the tallest monument in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a casino.” There’s a gentle feminist poke to stereotype in her choice of construction materials. She uses heavy wood and concrete – but brings bright colour to the equation. “Colour is often seen as vulgar, and always as feminine. I can’t believe we still need to have these conversations, but yes: the world needs more female power!” The work is also about the top-heavy construction industry in NZ – huge houses with mortgages to match. In a wider context, global politics feel unsafe, out of control. Words are scribbled on a paper bag taped to the wall above Lou’s desk: ‘slump, entropy, erode, teeter, balance’. “The world’s foundations right now are not sound,” she says. “We’re on a sliding slope – but maybe that’s a good thing.” Traditional monuments contain perfect cubes, spheres or columns. Lou’s slumped concrete forms are made by pouring concrete into cutup coffee sacks which she sews by hand. The concrete stretches the bags into unpredictable organic shapes as it hardens; sometimes the bags burst. Her wood is often burned and charred. “Fire is cleansing and it connects us. We’re all drawn to fire, we’re all made of carbon. And that velvety blackness shows off the wood grain so nicely!” she grins. Lou’s Unmonuments could topple at any moment. They’re a reminder to let go of control, encourage imperfection and embrace chaos. Are you ready?

KORORA - THE WORLD’S SMALLEST PENGUIN Little blue penguins, are common around the Rodney coast but sadly their numbers are declining. Roger Williams and Warwick Massey have built specially-designed penguin boxes, which will give the penguins some protection when nesting. Predators, such as rats and stoats, have reduced penguin numbers along the coast and predator control will give the penguin chicks a chance to fledge. Forest & Bird Warkworth Area are keen to hear of sightings of these penguins coming ashore in the Goat Island to Ti Point area. Get in touch to volunteer or report sightings.

ZERO WASTE 2018 TRAILBLAZER AWARD Local Josie Jackson won the Auckland Council’s Zero Waste 2018 Trailblazer award last month. She has been running Zero Waste workshops for the past few years with both the local community and individuals in the field of sustainability. She feels it is time to move onto local businesses and tackle waste on a larger scale. Her new business completes waste auditing and provides clients with waste minimisation strategies, and with two local businesses already on board Josie is on her way to help Auckland hit its target of zero waste by 2040.
THE KNIVES ARE OUT! Young Dylan Thomson from Mangawhai Meat Shop, will be on the knives against ten of New Zealand’s best apprentice butchers at the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year competition on Thursday 6 September, at Shed 10 in Auckland. First time entry Dylan sliced his way to the top in the regional competition against some fierce and accomplished competitors. He says he was overwhelmed to make it through and is working extremely hard to prepare for the final stage of the competition, where he can show his northland flare.

Mr Haines The Sawmill Brewery beer and Huia wine were flowing, Mr and Mrs Nathan Haines were generating some exceptional beats and the crowd of around 250 was heaving. The opening of the Fiona Pardington and Vicki Fanning exhibition at the Vivian Gallery in late July was an experiment in getting the punters in – and they loved it. “This is the best thing I’ve been to for ages!” a visitor from Auckland was heard to shout.
above our weight as always!” Did his investment pay off? “Can’t say, but I’m smiling!”
Director Scott Lawrie was busy but happy. “So many people outside of Matakana don’t even know this gallery exists,” he said. “We really need to share what we’ve got here.” So he chartered a free return bus from Auckland to the Vivian – it was fully booked in three days.
Pardington’s work combines old monochrome press photographs with found chunks of agate glass (dug up at a century-old factory site in Ohio) to unsettling effect. The bright, striated pieces of glass against the old-fashioned photos are like weird manifestations from a parallel universe, surreal and haunting.
As well as the usual generous sponsorship from the Sawmill Brewery, Matakana Oysters came to the party and so did the Rusty Pelican, delivering 30 pizzas. “This is what it’s all about for me,” Scott enthused. “This amazing community coming together to put Matakana out there – punching
The Fiona Pardington show is a collaboration, relatively rare in the art world, between the Vivian and Fiona’s gallery, Starkwhite. “It’s win-win for everyone when smaller galleries can work together with the big players like this. We were incredibly lucky the Starkwhite directors were up for it,” says Scott.
In a side gallery, Matakana’s Vicki Fanning has crafted three luminous, glamorous pieces. Her recent ceramic torsos have morphed into silicone shapes with her trademark borosilicate glass wicks creeping over them. The third iteration
of her ‘User Generated Content’ series, they complete the transformation from ‘human’ clay to ‘virtual’ glass. The beautifully clever plinths represent digital test-screens and extend the media metaphor. Be quick to see this show; the next Vivian opening is Saturday 8 September, at 4pm. It celebrates the life and work of Ant Morris, founder of Morris & James, and unbelievably, will be his first solo show in a major gallery. Now in his 80th year, Ant is slowing down a little, but still working in his own studio. The exhibition promises a retrospective of his pottery, cast glass and recent paintings of both landscape and contemporary portraiture. It’s an homage to the man who put Matakana on the map as a creative destination and who vowed never to be called an artist, but with fierce humility, a simple ‘artisan’. Essential viewing. www.thevivian.co.nz 39 Omaha Valley Road, Big Omaha

ART
HEAVY METALS: ALYSN MIDGELOW MARSDEN WORDS
CHRISTINE
SHEEHY
Copper, bronze, brass and woven metal may seem unlikely materials of choice for a renowned textile artist, but for Alysn Midgelow Marsden experimentation is all part of the joy.
Genetics and Biochemistry. “I decided fairly early on in my science career that it was going to be a temporary thing and I was going to push hard and find out what I could do with Art.”
“I can use pretty much any material I come across,” says Alysn. “I enjoy finding the limits of how things crossover. How can I stitch with wire or what happens to metal when you fold it, when you dip it in acid, when you put it under the sewing machine or in a flame?”
After studying embroidery at City and Guilds and developing an interest in the social significance of textiles, Alysn’s work reached a turning point when she decided to think of metal as fabric. “The scale, my drawings, my inspiration and how I presented the work all had to change. That was really exciting.”
Alysn, who was born and raised in the UK, comes from a long line of stitchers but took the roundabout route to artistic acclaim via a PhD in
12
All that messing about with bunsen burners now comes in handy for the burnishing, soldering
and shaping of her sculptures, wall panels and wearable arts. Alysn says developing each piece is a complicated, engrossing time. “Textiles can be worked and reworked, and I really fight against that, because I want it to feel as though it's flowing straight from me.” In 2012, after developing her own gallery and arts centre and writing five books on textile art, Alysn emigrated to New Zealand with her husband Brian and their three (then) teenage children. It was time to get back into the studio. “I wanted to give my time to be the artist that I'd always promised myself I could be.” Her work has now won awards in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Two years ago, Alysn and Brian found a house on the Tawharanui Peninsula with a studio, room for visitors, native bush and a view of the sea. “Being near the sea is important in terms of being at the edge of something, being able to stand and feel that you're open in a different way to being surrounded by land,” says Alysn. “There's something about the energy that I find very appealing. And the light in Matakana is incredibly special, I liken it to Cornwall.” Earlier this year she led an ‘Impressive Metals’ workshop as part of Creative Matakana, one of many workshops she teaches internationally. “Many of my ideas never find their way into my finished work. Passing those on in workshops is a fabulous way for me to continue experimenting and to feel that those ideas have had a life of their own.”

WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT WORDS

WELFORD
Perception by Leanne Kemp
Me And My Shadow by Carole Hebberd
Ravioli Rose by Alarnya Ashby
There was absolutely no doubt in the judges’ minds that this was a winning artwork when they saw the entry, ‘Me and My Shadow’ in the Waipu Museum’s 2018 Art ‘n Tartan Wearable Art Awards.
Kush and her favourite dramas ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Braveheart’. Carole also won the ‘Crowning Glory’ category with her entry ‘Flora Bundance’.
featured as part of the ‘Illumination Creation’ category, and Maggie Wistrand’s highly original artwork created from hub caps and car parts won ‘Arcs and Sparks’.
“I knew I wanted to include monarch butterflies in my design although I didn’t know how,” said designer Carole Hebberd. Carole certainly found the best way, as her breathtaking ‘Me and My Shadow’ took the much coveted, Supreme Award. Her piece also came joint first in the ‘Scottish Surreal’ category and won the People’s Choice award. Carole’s costume, modelled by the irrepressible Robert Spriggs, consisted of over five hundred hand-made transparent monarch butterflies, aluminium mesh, wire, florist tape, a host of other craft items and two working clocks. Carole, who has MS, said her costume symbolises her surreal experience with MS and the struggle of living with that chronic condition. She was inspired by the work of Russian surrealist artist, Vladamir
Held in the Celtic Barn, tickets for the three shows sold out quickly and audiences were not disappointed. This year the show had a contemporary feel while still paying homage to the heritage and traditions of Waipu. A troupe of young dancers provided a backdrop for an array of magnificent costumes enhanced by creative props, lighting and music that included elements of Maori, Celtic and Asian cultures. Other award winners included the beautiful ‘Kaitiaki’ by Robyn Coutts and ‘Perception’ by Leanne Kemp. Both entries embodied the theme of nature and the forests of Aotearoa. The stunning ‘Ravioli Rose’ by Alarnya Ashby also won an award and Sophie Denby and Leatitia McCracken’s ‘Octopoda Crossostrea’ won the ‘Frost and Flame’ category. Kids’ ‘Masks in Wonderland’ were again a big hit with a cavalcade of glow-in-the-dark creations
Plans for 2019 are already in the pipeline and although Production Manager Helen Frances has stepped down, she holds great hopes for the future. “I’m confident the show will go from strength to strength,” she says. “Our community contains a huge amount of creativity and commitment to what has now become an iconic event in the Waipu calendar and I have no doubt it will continue to grow.” A full list of winners can be found on the Waipu Museum’s website and entries will be on display in the Celtic Barn later in the year.

Tell us how your passion for art began?
Another dramatic event happened while I was managing the public arts collection for Auckland Council: an artwork called ‘Wihaan, by Tiffany Singh & Tessa Laird’ was stolen from Constitution Hill. Through the power of social media, and we tracked it down in just over two hours and waited outside while the police retrieved it for us.”
“I’ve always been ‘the artist of the family’ and followed through on my passion right through to graduating from art school, with a major in Sculpture. My first job was at the Forrester Art Gallery in Oamaru, where I got my first taste of what it’s like to curate and exhibit art, rather than creating it.” Career highlights so far…
We caught up with Sheridan Dickson on her first day on the job at Brick Bay as Arts Manager. What’s your role at Brick Bay? “Brick Bay Sculpture Trail showcases outdoor sculpture by contemporary New Zealand artists, all of which are for sale. We are the largest art consultancy specialising in outdoor sculpture in New Zealand. The Brick Bay Sculpture Trust exists to support New Zealand Artists by providing interest free loans to develop large scale sculpture works that are then exhibited on the trail. My role
“I really loved managing the National Art Collection at Te Papa, and being involved in the design aspects of the new building on Wellington’s waterfront as well as relocating the whole collection from the old museum on Buckle St to its new location. Being on the floor for the opening ceremonies for Te Papa was both humbling and exciting, with over 35,000 people flowing through the door on the opening day!”
Ideal weekend out and about? “Taking my dog Iggy out to explore somewhere new..in fact I can’t wait to introduce Iggy to The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail sometime soon. Catching some live music with friends and, of course, indulging in some great food and wine along the way. When I need some downtime you’ll find me at home binge watching something like Stranger Things, or playing online games with my nephews (PUBG - don’t even talk to me about Fortnight).”
Any good stories to tell? “Probably the most dramatic artwork I’ve managed was ‘The Virgin & the Condom’, that was exhibited at Te Papa in 1998. This artwork provoked a strong reaction from some visitors to the museum and it was vandalised numerous times. My daily task was removing the (revolting)

Photo credit: Marla Ferguson The art with most impact can seep into a viewer’s mind. It will transport the viewer to a particular time and place, leaving them breathless. “Art is visual communication. If you have to describe in words what you’re getting at, then I think you’ve failed,” says local artist Lindsay Scott, who is a Fine Artist, Biologist, researcher, guide, and Environmentalist. A child of Africa, Lindsay Scott, has spent the last 30 years travelling and creating stunning art that has earned numerous awards and is displayed in major private collections and museums. In early adulthood she studied Biology and Fine Art at university and comments, “I wanted to incorporate my passion for nature and animals with my art, but didn’t find much support in the Fine Arts”. Because of this she worked creating biological illustrations in a museum in South Africa and conducting studies on bird behaviour in Australia along with writing a book on plant

people to look at nature and what we could lose.” To that end, Lindsay has contributed a number of original pieces to Ecology fundraisers and projects. Lindsay and her husband, Brian McPhun, a native New Zealander, moved to the Matakana Valley over 15 years ago and built the Koru House, overlooking Christian Bay, Tawharanui. For a number of years she was producing up to 80 pieces of Wildlife Art a year. “When you produce at least six pieces a month, you don’t have time to experiment and recharge”, she explains. She was beginning to feel drained. So, Lindsay and Brian decided to open their home to others, making it available as a retreat. “We meet the nicest people,” she says. “This is a piece of art (Koru House) we’ve created, and we get to share it with other creative people.” Lindsay has reduced her original art to ten or twelve pieces a year. They are still stunning pieces, but she has more freedom to experiment. She continues to show her art in shows, galleries, and museums in America, but she has left time in her schedule to host guests at the Koru House and to take groups on safari to Africa once or twice a year, “Art is an ongoing process. There’s no end.” www.lindsay-scott.com www.koruhideaway.co.nz

The pou were carved from macrocarpa offcuts and incorporate Māori motifs that Boudewijn just can’t seem to get away from. Koru are everywhere in his work and he feels a strong affinity with the indigenous culture of the country. “I worked with Māori guys in the forests in Maramarua and I learned to speak some Māori and it’s sort of ingrained in me now.” Boudewijn revived his passion for carving three years ago and worked for six months alongside Kerry Strongman at his factory in Te Hana. “Kerry tended to work on really large sculptures but I’m happy to work on smaller material.” Boudewijn’s work incorporates everything from the grand outdoor pou, through to smaller indoor sculptures and bread boards. “I’ve sold a lot through the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, which is nice.” Music is another strand of Boudewijn’s life that he has come back to since retirement. He learned to play the cello as one of nine children in a musical family and they made a very competent chamber orchestra, he assures me. He now plays bass with a new band, The Puhoi Ramblers, and is rediscovering the joy of making music. He even carved and built his own bass.
“Doors just open and I walk through them,” says Boudewijn (pronounced Bode-wayne). And many are the doors that he has passed through – musician, scientist, forestry worker, farmer, farrier, horse breaker, project manager, actor, sculptor, carver and more besides. Boudewijn’s current area of expertise is that of wood carver and he has just had a collection of his pou installed on a public walkway in Mangawhai. “The art is always there, it just needs time to come out. Now that I’m retired, I finally have time.” The pou whenua incorporate a large male and female and then a collection of smaller pou represent their children.

Boudewijn has a simple motto for life: “Don’t be afraid of trying things out.” He has never been afraid to try something new and it’s just possible, by the time I have finished writing this, he has launched off in a fresh direction. You can see Boudewijn’s work at Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens or visit his Facebook page or you may catch him playing bass at your next party.

Behind the double blue doors of the Mangawhai Artists Gallery lies a beating heart of artistic activity, pumping out inspiration to the whole community. This vibrant group currently boasts over 150 members, a scheduled season of 19 exhibitions and has plans to double the gallery space to allow for learning opportunities year round. The enthusiasm is palpable as I speak to committee members, Lynn Middleton and Wendy Leach. They’re excited for the exhibition season ahead and for the education season that has just finished. “We run our learning opportunities over winter,” explains Wendy. “We’re always encouraging people in and each year we run a community art project which is very popular. We’re really keen to get people from Warkworth and Matakana to come here.” In the last year, the gallery has had around 12,000 visitors and they are eager for more. “The gallery is open every day. We’ve got wonderful art, wonderful cafés and it’s a beautiful
area to visit, so there’s plenty here to enjoy.” The number of artists in the group is steadily increasing which is not surprising considering the active exhibition schedule, the learning opportunities available and something as practical as not charging commission on artwork sales at the gallery. Added to this is a comprehensive, elegant and up-to-date website that provides full details of the group’s activities and shows, profiles of the artists, and much more. Mangawhai Artists Inc. embraces everyone from hobby artists to professionals. Artists can have solo shows or team up with others to present an exhibition, and there is ample opportunity with a new show opening every two weeks. “The openings are popular social occasions and very well attended, often by 50-80 people,” Lynn tells me. “The exhibitions are of a consistently high standard, world-class in some cases.” Wendy described this year’s successful community art project run by the group. “Our theme was ‘Magical Mangawhai Goes Bush’ which
was a month-long program. We had about a thousand people painting over the first two weeks and about a thousand people came along over the two weeks of the exhibition. We blacked out the gallery and put up ultra-violet lights, and all the paintings glowed in the dark. It was fantastic!” Long term plans include working towards building a community art centre next to the Mangawhai Museum. It will have a larger gallery space and allow for the use of the current gallery as studio work space. Vitality and energy are emanating from Mangawhai Artists Inc. and it is infectious, so they encourage you to make the journey to Mangawhai over the coming months and indulge in their wonderful program of exhibitions. You might just find yourself inspired to join up to their artistic revolution.

HISTORY REDESIGNED WORDS

HUNTER

Photo credit: Rupert Herring Everything about artist Rupert Herring is terribly British, from his charming accent to his floppy blonde fringe and self-deprecating humour. His partner, Louise, is a nurse from Bristol who’s quite excited about most things and is extremely stylish. They both dote on their delectable small daughter, Lily Larue. The family live close to the Kaipara Harbour, 10km down a gravel road, in what is usually referred to as the middle of nowhere. They have five acres, with a plethora of outbuildings which they plan to renovate. Rupert’s workshops already occupy two of them. He needs space because he collects bits of wood and machinery. You may have seen him on telly where he was one of the ‘Design Junkies’, making fantastic things out of found objects (including that incredible bed – currently for sale!). That’s what he does as an artist, but at the higher end, creating ‘furniture-shaped sculpture’ by repurposing old balustrades and table legs.
“It’s almost functional,” he says, “but not quite. Never let practicality get in the way of good design, I say!” What he does with his bits of wood is simple: he slices them up vertically with his bandsaw and with extreme precision, puts them back together in different formats. Supine in an old armchair, Rupert consults his notes. “It becomes about looking beneath the surface, I’ve written down here. The simple act of cutting something up creates something completely new in terms of form and shape and when put together in a group, the negative space is as important as the wood itself.” He’s dead right – beautiful patterns emerge, elegantly curved or perfectly pointed. Rupert has been a builder since he was a toddler. “Mum bought me a toolbox and I spent every minute hammering and chiselling. Dad was a carpenter and cabinet-maker who built some rather interesting things.” One of his best was a two-story gypsy caravan which had 39 stained glass windows in it, made by Rupert’s mother,

who for 18 years lived in a yurt in Umbria in summer and a village in Rajasthan in winter. What the…? Rupert clearly had an unconventional upbringing. He’s also done lots of travelling himself, always a good thing for a creative chap. He’s as happy doing sexy restaurant fit-outs, building film sets, or being in front of a camera as he is making art. But if it’s his art you want, you’ll find it at the Vivian Gallery in Matakana. In the near future, he’ll be fronting a pilot episode for a new TV series which aims to interview unconventional artists in their own studios around NZ. And he also plans to begin a range of furniture which is both beautiful and functional. We’ll be first in line.

THE TREEHOUSE CREATIVE
The Treehouse Creative consists of duo Caren and Jonny Davis and is overseen by their two busy kids - Huia (4) and Matariki (16 months). With some fun years of learning on film behind them, the two (separately) set out on a journey of photographing professionally and exploring faraway lands. Fast-forward a few years, wanderlust fulfilled, they decided to join forces in business and in life! While residing in Auckland, the pair chose Mangawhai for their 2012 wedding. Little did they know they would soon call Mangawhai home. As they grew into a family, they also nurtured what they could offer clients. Website design was added to their skill set, creating portfolio sites and online shops for small businesses. Each website benefits from the use of beautiful, unique images to tell a business story. The couple relish meeting new clients and learning about what makes them tick. They moved north 3.5 years ago, although
Caren is a long-time Northlander, hailing from Dargaville, while Jonny is from the Waikato. They quickly became involved in their new community; Caren runs a thriving, weekly, te reo Māori based playgroup and Jonny can be found wielding a paddle in the Mangawhai Waka Ama crew. The pair has extended the fostering of community connections into their work life too. Networking gatherings have recently kicked off at their Mangawhai Village studio/office - a space they share with other local businesses. “We love linking people and seeing local networks grow organically,” Caren says. Crafting a story through images is evident in both their commercial and personal creations. There is a distinct feel to their work – expect to sense the mood, trigger a memory, see the love, or draw a gasp. Creativity aside, their professionalism also lies in the attention to finer details, image treatment and finishing. Of special mention are The Dear Māmā flower
crown prints by Caren - an ongoing series of images created in collaboration with brilliant local florists. The concept behind the crowns is to honour the experiences and bravery of women who have been through miscarriage or stillbirth, with a percentage of sales going to Sands NZ, who support these women. Jonny has exhibited his work in a number of shows in Auckland. He loves to explore quiet, remote places, looking for signs of life. His landscapes and interiors of old community spaces have a restful quality to them. More recently they opened an online shop ‘The Treehouse Printshop’ which sells high quality, archival prints of their works. In a digital industry where image viewing can be fleeting, they find it hugely satisfying to create tangible prints that find their way into a person's home. www.thetreehousecreative.co.nz www.thetreehouseprintshop.co.nz

A NEW SPACE TO CREATE AND EXPLORE
Matakana's freshest injection of local talent is set to engage the public with a raft of crafted endeavours and help inject energy and passion through the process of co-creation. ‘Create Matakana’ was inspired from an after-surf conversation between friends, Michael Piercey and Brett Crockett. They were both working from home and wanting to ignite their workday with motivational surroundings and a team environment. In a region that prides itself on boutique, crafted products and experiences, they feel it is a great time to grow the Matakana brand, to create a space that pulls together a rich and diverse reflection of the region and supports the human endeavour. “We felt it was time to get expansive, to reach out and explore. We couldn't find a shared space that fitted what we wanted to do, so we figured we would create our own," says Michael of MichaelJohn Jewellery. “There are so many creatives working from home in the area and we wanted to create something
different, something that can bring us all together to evolve.” ‘Create Matakana’ was born. The short terms goal is to unite the local creatives to join, to be part of the space, have a place to display their work, connect with like-minded people and be inspired by the energy and passion that can be created together – to be part of something bigger. On-board from the start was John Hay, a longtime resident of Matakana. John is a self-taught Jeweller and has worked in the trade for over 30 years. He creates one-off pieces of his own or clients design, often influenced by nature, numbers, sacred geometry and symbols. His mediums are gold and silver using precious and semi-precious stones. Illuminate By Design.com is Brett's business, focussing on advertising, marketing and website development. "My team are now based around the world, but being a Snells Beach resident I think I've found the best location to be inspired from. The next steps for the Illuminate team are to work with local businesses to empower growth and
inspire business owners to reach new levels of abundance. Having a base in our community is the best way to connect with like-minded souls,” says Brett. Jewellery designer Michael John, better known as MJJ, has been designing jewellery and unique one-off pieces for over 15 years. From his humble beginnings in a KRD studio based in New Zealand to the bustling London life of Hatton Garden. “Collaborations have always been very important to me. It's amazing fun to work with like-minded people and has always pushed me out of my comfort zone,” he says. The Create Matakana doors are now open in the brown barn at 1 Anderson Road, Matakana (previously Rumage/Rambles – opposite Ascension Wine Estate), so head on down to view the retail offerings, or explore a creative service from the expanding list of cohabiters inside. www.illuminatebydesign.com www.michaeljohnjewellery.com www.johnhayjewellery.co.nz

The Best of Both Worlds The Box™: Winning Hearts, Minds and Awards Once you’ve decided to build – be it your first family home or a holiday retreat you’ve dreamed of since way before you could afford one – you need to partner with someone who’ll pick up on your design aspirations (from scribbles, descriptions and photos culled from living-the-dream magazines) then smooth the path every step of the way. An all-in-one designer/builder/quantity surveyor/counsellor is hard to find - which is why a team effort is called for. At Box™, we’re a one-stop-shop of ideas and action to grow your vision from the ground up. We like to think that, over the 10 years we’ve been in business, we’ve got better at what we do. But don’t just take our word for it, check out our credentials. Box™ is the only combined registered architectural practice and registered master builders in New Zealand and there aren’t many design-and-build companies that can boast of winning architectural awards and building accolades. Well-known for our modernist aesthetic, we also have the practical nous to back it up. At the 2018 Master Builders House of the Year Awards, we scooped four medals. A gold and the overall regional award for a creative house in Wellington, painted a moody shade of blue-green with an L-shaped configuration and a standout room divider (completed in association with Hutt City Builders). Another gold for a timber-clad home with a view in Greenhithe, Auckland that was built softly softly around a well-established tropical garden. Finally a silver award in the hotly contested $1-$2 million category for a project on a challenging site in Westmere, Auckland that resulted in a house that was slung between two plinths to provide 24/7 council access to a storm-water drain. We’re happy to be recognised by our peers, of course, but it’s far more important that our clients give us the word-of-mouth thumbs up. At the risk of sounding like tall poppies, we’re always looking to add to the line-up of awards on the Box™ mantelpiece. Who knows - your home could be next. 0800 717 717 www.box.co.nz

OLD SCHOOL, NEW HOME WORDS

ROBERTO
BUZZOLAN
Five years ago, the Dowling family bought ten acres on Matakana Road. It had river frontage and a random collection of buildings. There was a little bungalow (very old, very cold), a nice little B&B cottage, a rented minor dwelling and a dilapidated school house. “I fell in love with the school house,” says Haidee. “Craig fell in love with the river.”
The schoolhouse was renovated into a vintage store and opened as ‘Old School Inc.’, stocking industrial furniture and homewares. Meanwhile the couple, with teenage twins Texas and Coco, made the best of the bungalow, and collected their ideas and their energy to build their dream home.
Haidee had plans for that cute little building; around 120 years old, it had been the original school in Schollum Road, Matakana. Craig had plans for the river, specifically lying in a hammock under a palm. “Good luck with that,” says Haidee. “He hasn’t had a day off since we bought the place.”
It began in late 2016. Inspired by friends, Haidee and Craig drew up some plans using free software and lots of advice. “It helped that we had the best builder in the world,” she says. Tom Balzat and son Jackson worked tirelessly with Haidee to realise her wildest ideas.
They were used to the character of villas and were terrified that their new home would be a stark, soulless box. “But Tom helped us recycle most of the old kauri and rimu from the bungalow. That old wood has given the house the warmth and soul that’s crucial for any new build,” Haidee says. She speaks of her builder’s skills with reverence. “I’d show Tom a picture of a sliding door I liked and go out for a couple of hours. When I got back, he’d go ‘Like this?’ It would be done – and perfect.” The doors, the concrete sinks and enormous benches (boxed and poured nerve-wrackingly in situ), the shelving, wardrobes and more were handmade by Tom and Jackson.

Haidee did a lot of the painting herself, and stalked the internet for bargain treasures – the black and brass vintage ceiling fans ($150 the lot on TradeMe) were a major score and so too was the black Belling range (discounted heavily after being on MasterChef).
The master bedroom and the cute patchwork wall in the den both utilise weatherboards and heart rimu left exactly as-is. Haidee is rather fond of the patina of age, and this fact is obvious also in her fabulous collections of vintage signage, furniture and bric-a-brac.
The kitchen cabinetry is made from floorboards; the weatherboards were painstakingly de-nailed and put through a thicknesser machine by Haidee for the back wall of the deck. “Best thing I’ve ever used,” she says. “You can take off as much or as little from each board as you like.”
The house is uncompromisingly private from outside, with just one thin vertical window by the door. But enter through the boot-room (whose polycarbonate walls light up at night like a lantern), and beautiful, full-length stacking sliders showcase subtropical gardens and sunshine.
The brick fireplace outside is all that remains of the bungalow. Looking rather forlorn now, it’ll soon be repurposed as a barbecue and pizza oven. And like the old home which was deconstructed around it, it will enjoy a happy new lease of life.

Unique Food-based Business Opportunity Retail store, café, regional food outlet, experiential “providore” style outlet, or your own idea.
This is an outstanding opportunity for an entrepreneurial operator to develop a new offer at a growing, wellestablished visitor attraction. An attractive stand-alone indoor/outdoor space of total 230 square metres, which includes a commercial kitchen, is available for lease on favourable and flexible terms. It would ideally lend itself to a café operation combined with a “providore” style retail outlet offering both food and local produce - with perhaps a specialist offer such as ice cream, cheese, honey, or artisan products. Your own concepts and visions are also welcomed. The space includes 55 square metres of covered veranda, and also use of a permanent marquee and other communal spaces and facilities. The resources offer excellent opportunities for events and themed entertaining, including catering to the pre-booked tourist and other groups that regularly visit the site. The high-profile space is located on State Highway One at the popular Sheepworld visitor attraction, 4kms north of rapidly expanding town of Warkworth. The site (current drive-by traffic five million vehicles per year) is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the new Auckland motorway extension - which will join the existing State Highway One just 1km to the south. Access in and out of the site onto the State Highway will be significantly improved by roading works taking place later this year. The site is currently undergoing an upgrade and rebrand programme to expand and add to the existing successful and growing business operations. We are looking for an innovative high-quality operator to occupy the available space and develop a compatible business, which can contribute to and benefit from these developments. The space is available now and we would like to have a new operation in place before the busy summer season. We are open to suitable ideas and are willing to be creative on commercial terms. For more details please ask for an information pack. If you have the know-how and motivation to create a great business in a well-established and cooperative environment we would love to talk. ROSÉ CRAFTED CAKES WORDS
Visit the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market and you can’t help but notice the buzz around the newest stall in town. Small children gaze wide-eyed at rows of delicate cupcakes neatly laid out on the macrocarpa counter. Clouds of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry frosting are freckled with tiny golden stars, embellished with a jaunty square of Honest Chocolat, or most popular of all, adorned with a hand painted, golden unicorn horn. Rosé Crafted Cakes is the creation of Zarnya Bordoloi, who specialises in beautiful, premium quality handcrafted cakes. Her gorgeous creations are all dairy-free and egg-free and can be glutenfree too. Zarnya is a self-taught cake crafter who came to the business the old-fashioned way. After years of baking beautiful, high quality birthday cakes for her four sons, friends began asking her to do the same for weddings and special

occasions. “I love crafting beautiful things and the creativity of cake making gives me such a sense of accomplishment,” she says. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist.” She launched the business in June 2017, shortly after she, husband Neil and their children returned from living in Australia. With their youngest child starting preschool, Zarnya decided she needed something to do. "I mapped out a business plan, set up a Facebook page and received a cake order that weekend. I have not had a free weekend since.” Word of her stunning creations and attention to detail soon spread and within a few months, Zarnya was handcrafting up to 400 designer cupcakes for corporate events, including the launches of new Augustine fashion stores. “People ask how I’ve achieved that so quickly, but I just picked up the phone and asked. When I think about what I want, I don’t worry about the
problems. I just focus on the outcome.” The family moved to Point Wells in June 2018, just as a stall became available at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. “I love being able to use local ingredients in my creations, like chocolate from Honest Chocolat, coffee from Matakana Coffee Roasters and beautiful flowers from Whangateau Roses,” says Zarnya. “As the seasons change I’m looking forward to bringing in local berries too.” Zarnya has future plans for a cake shop in Matakana, offering on-the-day cake orders and delivery. She’s always on the lookout for local suppliers keen to collaborate and is currently searching for a pink champagne for a future cupcake creation. Not rosé? “I chose my brand name because I love rose gold - but I do enjoy a glass of local rosé too.” zarnya@rccakes.co.nz www.rccakes.co.nz

TWO BLACK DOGS Two Black Dogs was born after the search for a bare block of land in Northland turned into the discovery of a ten acre block of established olive trees in Mangawhai. Knee high grass and trees in need of a good prune proved to be a satisfying challenge for the team and the outcome was a beautiful grove, full of birdlife and fruit filled trees. Named after and inspired by Nicky Beatson & Graham Brown’s two black labradors, Two Black Dogs has been producing extra virgin olive oil since the first harvest in 2015. The olive grove is the dogs’ happy place, you’ll find them running through the trees and exploring with their waggy tails. The property is home to three Italian and one Greek olive variety, each producing an oil with a different taste characteristic. Nicky & Graham enjoy being as hands on as possible with the brand - from looking after their trees with a yearly pruning program, to the design and social media presence. They love producing a natural product with only one ingredient and minimal processing, that has an amazing fresh taste and top health benefits. Being able to share a piece of their special “For place with friends and family and meeting new

Three different olives were harvested in May and June 2018. The trio of NZ Certified Ascolano, Koroneiki and a limited edition Frantoio extra virgin olive oil each pair well with different foods, with a mild to medium classing.

INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN OF OUR DISTRICT Warkworth Museum is currently featuring inspirational women in its display. Who are these women and how have they motivated others? The women whose stories are told in the exhibition, range from the early settlers in the area to contemporary women. They are inspirational because, with no desire to impress and with little expectation of recognition, they worked hard and made a positive contribution to our community. The early settlers include such women as Mary Snell and Florence Wilson. Their husband’s activities have been recorded, leading them to be recognised as two of the founding fathers of the area, however little was recorded about the contributions of their wives.
Helen Langman
Suffrage Petition
Some of the women’s stories are told through their clothes and their belongings. These include the McKinney silver and the tea service given to Phoebe Southgate by the people of Warkworth as well as the antique wedding dress that was found in a supermarket bag left at the Hospice Shop. Many women in the district signed the petition demanding votes for women. This document is featured in the display with Florence Wilson’s being one of the signatories. It includes many more family names that still exist in our town today. More contemporary examples in the display include successes in business, the environment, politics and the community. While we have recorded the stories of many women, countless others remain unknown and untold. Yet the stoicism and determination of these women made a major contribution to the community that we can enjoy today.

OYSTER & WINE FESTIVAL MATAKANA 2018
The Mahurangi oyster season is well under way, and very soon those little sea beauties will be at their very best just in time for Oyster & Wine Festival Matakana. Returning for a second year the festival celebrates their creamy goodness alongside local wine and beer. On top of the freshly shucked oysters local chefs and food trucks will create oyster and seafood dishes that will make your mouth water. Grab your gummies for this all-weather event set in the heart of the Matakana wine region. Within the demo tent discover the art of wine oyster matching, hear from local oyster farmers or learn to shuck. Already a shucking pro? Try your hand at the all-day shucking competition ($10 entry fee),
with great prizes and the converted Top Shucker trophy. With an epic line-up of live music by 80sX, Sam Allen, Laughton Kora, Fifth Element and locals Jade River Ukes you’ll want to pick your spot and stay all day. PAKIRI SCHOOL PET DAY Spring is in the air and at Pakiri School, students are excitedly holding planning meetings for their annual Pet Day and fundraiser. This long-standing tradition began in the mid-1950s and is still a highlight on the local calendar. Students bring a calf or lamb they have cared for, groomed and trained for the big day, or other pets such as goats, chickens and rabbits. The popular bucket raffles and hangi food are guaranteed crowd pleasers. Come along rain or shine, for a dose of old-school rural fun. Saturday 22 September, 10am
