AMBER

EWING

When you see Amber Clyde skate it is hard to believe that this was her first year competing in The Mangawhai Bowl Jam. It is even more difficult to believe how surprised she was at being selected to compete in the Women’s Finals division. “I only entered for my students,” Amber says, as she initially attended the event to support her students, not to compete herself. After some encouragement from the people she has dedicated much of her time to, she found herself dropping into what she calls the best skatepark in New Zealand, in front of the events biggest crowd yet. As a young girl Amber tried skating at her local skate park in Auckland’s North Shore but after a couple of boys from her school teased her she gave up, feeling anxious and unsafe in an environment where she was always the only girl. Instead she played for the first 11 soccer team at Northcote College during her high school years, but it never gave her the joy that skating had. It was not until Amber became a mother that she was inspired to try her hand at skating once more. Battling with severe postnatal depression she dusted off her board and got back out there. After she began skating full-time she came off her medication entirely. Amber describes skateboarding as her “medication for life”. “It’s crazy, I love it so much, I get way too excited!” Amber's teaching career started three years ago with her running free classes for girls on Sundays at her local skatepark. When the classes grew too big for her to manage she began after school classes and school holiday skate tours throughout Auckland and to the Mangawhai Bowl. Her teaching philosophy is centred around diversity in skateboarding and creating a safe space for anyone who wants to skate. Recently she has been awarded a grant from Auckland council to take her classes into public schools. This is a huge step towards her goal of diversity and has extended her reach in the community.

The Botanical Garden

Matakana Botanicals owned by Danvers Devereux, started in 1986 as a home business creating pot purri out of a bath tub which has evolved into the country’s most established premium ‘bath and body’ company. Danvers transformed what was an overgrown junk yard full of old wrecks and general rubbish into a showcase for some of New Zealand’s finest natural products. “The rustic quality of board and batten was a must, it was important to me that we had open, airy and natural spaces. Given their product is naturally-grown and

made out of a renewable resource, Customkit became an important part of the project.” The buildings are 90% energy efficient and the objective was to create as many aspects and functions as possible that were sustainable, even the loo, (an environmentally-friendly septic tank system created by Biolytix using nature (in, the form of worms) to break down waste). Danvers worked with Matakana builder Gus McKergow and members of the Customkit crew to develop a series

of buildings. It includes the main office, a warehouse, shop and cafe, a distillery and candle manufacturing area, and a combination implement shed and honey house. There is even a special place for the original pot pourri bath tub where the whole story started. Gus says he particularly likes working with clients who choose the Customkit route. “They are interesting, hands-on people, who want to have their say in the creation. It means we’re creating places with a great deal of imagination, individuality, style and flair.”

A SPLIT SUCCESS WORDS REBECKA

On Kokopu Street in Omaha South, sits this unique and modern family beach home. Nick Sayes and Luke Jackson from Sayes Jackson Architects was briefed with the task to capture views of the beach and the western sunset – as well as provide sheltered outdoor living, protected from the harsh north-easterly winds. The house, which is an alteration and extension of an existing small bach, is laid out in an L-shaped arrangement over two levels in order to achieve a strong and expansive northern view towards Omaha beach, while at the same time enclosing an intimate outdoor courtyard to the west.

The original bach was lengthened and re-clad in stained cedar weatherboards to form a solid wing of garaging, bedrooms and bathrooms. To counter and contrast the cedar, an addition of black profiled metal and glazing was placed perpendicular – forming a sheltered western courtyard between the ‘L’ of old and new. “One unique challenge on this project was to make effective use of an existing bach on the site, with existing buildings limiting options on the placement and geometry of complementary new forms,” says Nick. “The other challenge was to achieve a balance between the views and the connection to ground

floor outdoor living,” he says. “To access views when you’ve got one row of houses between you and the beach, living spaces tend to be best placed on upper levels. But on the other hand, living spaces on ground level allows for a house to open up to outdoor courtyards and landscaping – which is particularly desirable for outdoor family living at a summer beach house.” This balance was created by splitting living spaces over two levels. A connection was maintained between the two levels via a bold, open, expressive set of stairs to carry light, sound and visual continuity between them. Upper-level kitchen and dining spaces leverage views to the

northeast and overlook the courtyard to the west. The lounge below opens onto landscaping to the northeast with a pathway to the beach, as well as directly into the western courtyard. “The most unique part of the project was the sculpting of the stairs, and the associated play of accompanying building elements in response,” says Luke. “The stairs are visible from the entry and western courtyard and a clear visual tie between the upper and lower levels. A western window takes on a similar sculpted form – playing

off the angular stairs to allow western evening light through the stairwell and perforated steel balustrade. Living room cabinetry and steel elements add to this expression and carry a common gesture through both living levels.” Other than the stairs, the architects say they are most proud of the effectiveness of the western courtyard as a general ‘pivot point’ for the house. “We’ve spent some time at the house and have found ourselves gravitating within and around the courtyard. Either standing in the kitchen or on the

upper-level balcony and overlooking the courtyard – or sitting on a terrace ledge in the courtyard itself, as it captures the low golden evening light,” says Nick. “And it’s even better with the outdoor fire on and the BBQ rolling!” Build Directory Sayes Jackson – www.sayesjackson.nz Composite Joinery – www.compositejoinery.co.nz WW Construction – www.warkworthconstruction.co.nz WW Gas – www.warkworthgasfitting.nz

TWO FARMERS STARTED A BAR... The Story of the Leigh Bar started off like all great stories, two farmers having a beer in Turkey in July 2014. These two farmers were father and son, Peter and Richard Scott. Not knowing the first thing about hospitality other than Speights is best served cold, they went out with the ambition to fill a gap in the fishing town of Leigh. By December 2014, the doors were open and cold beers were being poured, with all sorts of gear being pulled out of the shearing sheds including 100-year-old rimu wool presses. They came up with the catchy and creative name, Leigh Bar, as it was indeed the Bar in Leigh. For three and a half years it was run as a summer business and closed in the winter until 2018, when Richard finished university and brought the business outright. Having been raised in Leigh, Richard changed the priorities of the bar from being summer focused, to being focused on being a local hub. “If you look after the locals, the locals will look after you,” he says. This has been the guiding philosophy of the bar. It started with a monthly quiz night on the first Monday of each month where you need to get in quick to secure a seat these days! What makes these nights special is the community spirit to raise money for local groups and charities, whether it be the Leigh Hall, Pre-school or the amazing volunteer firefighters. The Leigh Bar were extremely proud to offer their Fire Brigade members $5 beers whilst their clubrooms were being refurbished. The bar quickly realised that they wanted to ensure all locals and visitors alike enjoyed a ‘Happy Hour’ at the friendly local every Friday 4-7pm. This has been well received and has created a vibrant atmosphere where all are welcome, Leigh Bar recently have been lucky enough to secure well-renowned chef Kevin Macleod (former Chef of Sculptureum). Together with Richard and Lissy “Bruce” Long have designed a menu that services the needs of not only hungry fisherman but all that choose to experience this wonderful local pub. From their crunchy tofu dumplings through to the succulent full rack of ribs, no matter your dietary requirements you will always be accommodated at the Leigh Bar. Word on the street is the Leigh Bar has the best sirloin steak in town and it's always cooked to perfection. The Leigh Bar has become an information hub for visitors where they have thought of everything, including a mobile phone charging station. Richard Scott and manager Amy Weller have a wealth of local knowledge from best walks in town to great squid fishing areas...these folks certainly know their stuff. WARKWORTH HOCKEY CLUB The Warkworth Hockey Club was founded by local enthusiast and player, Graham Buchs. Graham was part of the Warkworth Hockey Turf Charitable Trust team in planning the build of the Warkworth Hockey Turf at the Showgrounds. They had a vision to one day have a competitive club competing in the North Harbour Hockey competition but with the benefit of not having to travel and being able to train locally. It was last year, in 2019, that this vision became a reality. Graham put a memo out to the existing hockey community to create a committee that could help run the club and it started from there. Warkworth Hockey Club had both a Men’s and a Women’s team for 2019 and both teams performed outstandingly. Their men’s team made the final at North Harbour playing Takapuna in the final coming second overall in the competition. Their Women's team had a tricky but fun season. Willi Katteneder’s ‘Spark’, is a smart visual pun, using the logo of a local telecoms company, rendered in bamboo. He contrasts the reference to modern technology with one of the oldest materials used by humans. In constructing this, the largest work in the show, he used traditional methods and materials such as spokeshaves, and bamboo pins to fix the impressive work together. The show was a fundraiser for Te Whai Trust and Mangawhai Artists Inc. (MAI). Te Whai Trust works to connect local people with the social services they might need. MAI fosters the development of artists of all skill levels. It does this by encouraging freshness in artistic expression, exploration and development of new skills. RECORD CROWDS AND STOKE AT THE 9 TH MANGAWHAI BOWL JAM PHOTOS

AMBER

EWING

Heaving crowds, outstanding skateboarding and camaraderie defined the atmosphere in the town of Mangawhai on Waitangi weekend 2020. Over 70 skaters, ranging from eight to 55 years old, from all corners of New Zealand and Australia descended on the coastal town. Not to battle it out, but to inspire and drive each other, pushing their limits in one of the most inclusive and positive skateboarding events we’ve seen to date on the New Zealand bowl circuit. As organiser Jesse Peters puts it. “I am a little biased, but I think we have the most incredible community of people that comes together to enjoy world-class skateboarding in an environment that feels inclusive. That’s a pretty big thing for me.” A record crowd of over 2,000 people, made up of locals, families and fellow skateboarders were clinging to every spare spot of the expanded seating. The expressions of enthusiasm, cheer and sheer amazement were infectious. You couldn’t help but feel one with the skaters as they pushed themselves, responding to the excitement and openness of the crowd, as they were egged on by flavoursome MC Jay Smith. www.mangawhaiactivityzone.co.nz www.facebook.com/themangawhaibowjam

THERE FOR THE FISHING COMMUNITY Saturday 7 March sees the 17th Annual Leigh Fishing Contest return to our shores. Dust off your fishing gear and help to celebrate The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust's 50th anniversary serving the greater Auckland, Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel communities. The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter service originally operated a Hiller 12E helicopter out of Piha run by volunteer lifeguards. The charity’s rotors started running in the summer of 1970/71. Started by the community and there for anyone in the community, New Zealand’s oldest rescue helicopter service continues to lead the way today, operating two Leonardo AW169 helicopters, one BK117 helicopter and a Rapid Response Vehicle. LOGGER HEADS 7 – A TRADITIONAL SURFING CONTEST PHOTOS

To the unaccustomed ‘logger’ conjures images of bush whacking and chopping down trees. But in the surfing world a logger is someone who rides with the oldschool approach. ‘Logging’ or traditional Longboarding as it is often referred to, is the genre of surfing centred around the early 1960s style of big longboards, cross stepping and nose riding with style. Mangawhai Heads local and veteran longboard surfer Tony Baker started the Logger Heads event back in 2014. “I always wanted to run a Traditional Longboard event up here in the north.” Back when the Surfing New Zealand Longboard Tour wrapped up, the Logger Heads event was a natural progression to keep the tradition and vibe going. “I’ve grown up surfing the Mangawhai Coast, and there has always been a great surfing community here. We often get fun longboard friendly waves, and its home being Mangawhai Heads, the name “Logger Heads” came about. Since its inception the Logger Heads event has drawn competitors from across the country and further afield from places like Australia, Japan and Indonesia. But for the most part, the event caters for the ever constant local 09 longboard community that grace the east coast breaks on any given swell. “The kaupapa of the event has always been about celebrating local, and since day one we have had amazing support from local businesses such as our local designers Threadbox, the team at Bammas Surf Shop, McLeods Brewery and Surfline Custom Surfboards. Every year I have friends make beautiful handmade trophies, and we often give away local products such as Honey, Wine and Coffee as prizes.” This year’s Logger Heads event features five divisions – Open Logger, Wahine, Junior Logger, Old Mal and Nose Rider Division. “Every year we have seen an increase in all divisions, with the Ladies and Juniors seeing massive growth.” The event will be held on Saturday 7 March 2020 at Mangawhai Heads. LH7 also coincides with The Cove Fish Fry (Waipu Cove – Sunday 8 March) a gathering of positive and like minded surfers and shapers sharing a day at the beach. Truly a surf collectors heaven, with vintage and modern boards scattered across the lawn interspersed with salty old and young surfers at Waipu Cove. “The events have many mutual connections in Roger Hall at Surfline Surfboards and many of the competitors attending LH also enjoy a day at the Fry, and make a real weekend of it.” Saturday 7 March, Mangawhai Heads.
