JOSIE GRITTEN Josie grew up in rural North Wales. Her first photographic assignment at 15 – ‘A Day In The Life Of A Milkbottle’ – decided her future path. 25 years, a photography degree, a husband and three kids later she’s still going strong. “I’ve photographed bands, babies, births, bodies, ballet, brides, blessings and baking. But more and more my work reflects my joy of storytelling – lives, loves, raw heartfelt moments.”

THE LITTLE DIGGER COMPANY

MATAKANA COMMUNITY GROUP

The Little Digger Company is on a mission to find local schools and community groups to help during the year. They are offering free digger hire with driver to groups wanting to improve or transform a community space between Warkworth and Leigh. One of their values is giving back and we would like to find a group in our community to give back to. The Little Digger Company team have the knowledge and skills to help anyone to confidently use a small digger. Chris, a builder for the last 20 years, says the use of a small digger doesn’t need to be a daunting task.

Auckland Transport are building a path and a bridge linking Tamahunga Drive to Matakana village. This will enable walkers, cyclists and children to cross the river and get to the primary school and the village safely.

JESSICA

WHITING

When Jessica Whiting was at primary school, her bubble-writing was ace. Always one to spot a gap in the market, she soon started a kitchen table business selling assignment headings to Primary schoolmates for a few bucks a pop. Twentysomething years down the track, this uber-media person and the multiple strands of her creative businesses operate under one playfully apt company name: Oh Gosh. In her mid-teens, Jessica went to Hereford, UK for the rest of her schooling. She studied tertiary art and design there, coming back to Auckland in her early twenties. She landed jobs in corporate marketing with the likes of Arrow International. Wanting to return to her artistic roots, Jessica went back to college to study graphic design – this time while also raising a toddler. During her studies, she was creating funky crafts on the side to sell at local markets, when she realised the scene was missing something. There was a gap in the er, markets market. Gathering together a few of her favourite crafty folk, she decided to start a different kind of market. It would be one that showcased the artist: who they were, their individual styles and it would recognise the hours of painstaking work that went into their art or craft. In mid-2010, she scored a sweet venue for her first fair – Auckland Art Gallery – and thanks to her inspired marketing it was a huge success. Since then the Auckland Fair has grown to fill Shed 10 (since moving to the location in December 2014) on the Auckland waterfront with 100 super-groovy maker’s stalls. It also boasts its own cafés and a mini indoor/outdoor social media cinema. Jessica has cannily used the event space to launch and activate brands and products for her participating sponsors. Handling the digital marketing for the Auckland Arts Festival over 2014/15 gave Jessica the added impetus to work on her own online presence, and she’s become a style guru in her own right. FoxesBlog.com is a hip guide to life that includes everything from recipes to Jessica’s not-sosecret addiction – sneakers. She was named one of the top NZ Pinteresters in 2014 and made

it into the top five NZ ‘influencers’ for interior design on Instagram in 2015 (yep, she can do interiors as well). She has also organised many of Auckland’s other cool markets held at well-known events, including K’Rd’s First Thursdays and Laneway Festival. In December 2015, Jessica moved to Mangawhai. She decided that she wanted to build her own home but the Auckland market was out of control. She drew a circle on the map about an hour outside the city fringe and eventually arrived in ‘Magical Mangawhai’. Within a few weeks she started a women’s networking group and had fallen in love with the vibrant little town’s eclectic beach, food, walks and local characters. She set up her creative studio Oh Gosh as an umbrella company to hold her net of creative endeavours together – and to launch a new one. Jessica has now come back to her design roots, but with her extended skill-set she’s able to supply an entire brand package, from the Cloud to the footpath. She can create your company logo, design and produce all printed matter as well as your online presence (yes, she does web design as well), upgrade or rework your bricks-and-mortar interior and implement your ongoing social media marketing. “It’s so great to be able to work holistically like this,” she sighs happily. “It means I can help to transition a company through every stage of its brand and keep it true to my client’s vision all the way.” Sandbar Eatery in Mangawhai has recently benefited from Jessica’s full makeover treatment, and they couldn’t be happier. “Jessica helped us develop an identity that we can be proud of, well beyond what was expected” said Andrew. Setting up Oh Gosh in the glorious environment and quirky community of Mangawhai, it’s clear that her exceptional bubble-writing skills began a chain of events that has led Jessica and her daughter to exactly the right place. www.ohgosh.co.nz

PROFILE

VIRGINIA LEONARD WORDS

Matakana artist Virginia Leonard has news, and plenty of it. Just three years after starting to work in ceramics, she’s hitting the big time: 2017 for her is going to be epic. In 2013 that Virginia put an end to over two decades of painting on canvases. “I’d reached an impasse,” she says. Her bright, slick works of abstract expressionism had reached a point where she couldn’t physically get any more paint on to the canvases. “They were definitely becoming 3D. It was a natural progression to move to clay.” Matakana ceramicists Gary Horton and Mike De Haan donated their time, experience and in Gary’s case, workspace and kiln, to get her started. “They were incredibly generous; I was

up at Gary’s workshop all the time. Clay is such a tactile medium. It’s visceral – it’s so easy to relate it to my own body. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. Gary advised me to bugger off and get my own kiln eventually, which was exactly what I needed” Gin laughs. Virginia’s work is based around the expression of her chronic pain, the result of a serious motorcycle accident at 21. She has terrible scarring from burns and the many surgeries she endured over the two years she was in hospital. Before many of us had heard of Frida Kahlo, Gin based her 2001 Whitecliffe Master of Fine Arts thesis around Kahlo’s painting. Like her, Gin is unsentimental when exploring her own

experiences, but the results are not as grim as one might imagine – in fact her work is often ironic, playful – sometimes even joyful. A bit like her, really. Does she feel that this is her true medium, that she lost precious time painting? “Absolutely. I think that’s why I’m so frantic with it now – making up for lost time. But I use all the skills I’ve learned in painting for glazing now.” Gin’s pieces are loaded voluptuously with stains, resins and lustres; the lavish drips and oozes are uncomfortably reminiscent of bodily fluids and torn flesh. They are wonky, spiky, and lumpy… but strangely beautiful. They unflinchingly examine the possibilities of the beauty within imperfection.

Gin’s careful never to call herself a ceramicist – she’s a ceramic artist who’s still learning from the clay itself as she works. However, just over a year after starting work in her new medium, Gin was runner-up in the prestigious Portage Ceramic Awards 2015. “I don’t think anyone could believe it – least of all me.” Then in 2016 she was taken by Matthew Nache, director of her Gisborne dealer gallery PAULNACHE, to the very fabulous ‘Spring 1883’ art show at the Hotel Windsor in Melbourne. “l thought, if I sell one piece it’ll be incredible,” said Gin. But all her pieces sold on the first VIP night. Influential Melbourne collector Michael Schwarz adored it, as do other high-end collectors around Australia. It’s been followed with arrangements for solo shows in Melbourne and Sydney later this year. Since then, the pace has increased. Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark has asked for a solo show in May (she was in a group show there last year), and she has recently been invited to take up a prestigious artist’s residency at Denmark’s Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Centre. Usually only experienced, globally recognised artists would submit an application for this residency – you don’t just get invited, especially a newbie like Gin. It’s a move which has industry professionals open-mouthed. Gin is extremely grateful for the hard work of Matthew Nache, with whom she credits her recent successes; and she’s particularly starryeyed over the residency. She’ll miss her partner Olly and their children Coco, 15 and Orlando, 13. But to be in this kind of creative environment for weeks will be priceless. “And with all these shows coming up, I’ve got to absolutely go for it. I’ve never done anything like this and to think I won’t have to organise school lunches and bus runs…” Her eyes widen. “I’ll even have a studio assistant!” Her excitement is infectious. But in the meantime, she has a date with her kiln. Because when all the fabulous hoop-la is over, all Gin really needs is to get her hands on the clay. www.paulnache.com Left: ‘Side Tied Undies’, Clay, Resin, 420x790mm, Galerie Wolfsen, Denmark | Right: ‘Too Hot To Go Home’, Clay, Resin Concrete, 500x750mm, Private Collection, New Zealand

Back in our October issue, we featured a glorious collection of Len Castle ceramics. We happened to notice quite a number of mid-century modern chairs in the home of the collector, and couldn’t resist going back to photograph some of them – some eye-candy for our March design feature. This collection was mostly bought by the owner at auction through Art + Object, and features pieces by some exceptional designers working around the globe from the 1940s to the 1970s. It includes one of the world’s most desirable vintage chairs – the Papa Bear by Hans Wegner – as well as the classic bentply Curvesse chair made by NZ designer Garth Chester in 1944. One in five Curvesse chairs didn’t make it, since the process of pressing the ply was problematic; only 80 were ever sold. Chairs are notoriously hard to design – feast your eyes on a few of the best ever made.

KATE THODE WORDS

Kate Thode is an interior designer. She’s a parttime Omaha resident who’s designing homes around this area rather has her office in Parnell. It’s a family show: her mother, Ann Motion, is in Matakana and has had a career spanning decades, and her sister is also a designer, in Hawkes Bay. How do you manage working across the two areas of central Auckland and Matakana/Omaha? As I have a home in Omaha it’s great to be able to mix business with pleasure. When coming up for the weekend, I’ll often arrive early on a Friday or stay till Monday to project manage homes in the area. I’ve been loving working with all the gorgeous blues that have come through in fabrics the last year or so – Christian Lacroix’s botanical prints and Moooi’s fantastic designer rugs have been inspirational and so wonderfully unique to work with.

The use of rich, jewel colours in sumptuous velvets, textures and linens continues, along with the desire for more artisan finished products, from handcrafted tiles to rustic timber looks and various metal finishes. www.katethodeinteriors.co.nz

INGRID ANDERSON WORDS

Kaipara Flats textile designer Ingrid Anderson has recently hit the headlines: the Auckland Museum has just purchased some of her fabric designs for their archives. Ingrid’s mid-century modern prints and NZ flora and fauna motifs will be familiar to many of us. They’ve been made into a wide range of products from hats and aprons to ottomans and rugs. A short course in screen printing back in 1988 at Auckland Technical Institute (now AUT) started Ingrid on her textile design path. She was undertaking a degree in English and Education and thought the creative course would be fun, little dreaming it would become a career that would see her work preserved for posterity in a national institution.

Moving to Whangarei some years later with her young family, Ingrid went to the Quarry Arts Centre. She did more screen-printing work with Ron de Rooy. “Ron was an incredibly talented and generous mentor,” she says. “The Quarry was definitely a turning point.” She began printing fabrics to start her own kids clothing label, Poppet, and when she moved to Kaipara Flats with her family in 1997, Ingrid set up a studio to do small runs of hand-printed fabrics. She went to markets with her cushions and teatowels, but soon people began to ask for more. MATTERS OF THE HART WORDS

You may have spotted these little beauties at a local A&P show this summer. We did, and want to know more. We asked the founder of Harthouse Cabins, Cliff Hart, to tell us his story.

I first started thinking about building cabins when I was working as an engineer on superyachts in Italy. I was always interested in small space living – even before the current ‘small spaces’ trend – which probably started with sailing.

We wanted a design that had less than 10m2 floor area so it could be completed in my workshop and moved to location complete (it’s also the maximum size, usually, for an extra dwelling without consent). We wanted a steel chassis so it could be transported easily, and for strength and lightness, steel sections were rolled to make the frame. For insulation, polystyrene was used under the floor and Earthwool in walls and ceiling.

Once I was back in NZ, I decided to turn some of my drawings into reality with my good friend, Peter Kemp. Using his building experience and my engineering knowledge we worked on the drawings, deciding on certain criteria from the start.

Materials had to be functional, sustainable, longlasting, toxin-free, have the right look and be as light as possible. Compromises are necessary of course – for instance, the exterior timber is treated, but all internal timber is untreated and coated with water-based products.

The last year has been spent improving the initial design (I must thank my partner Angela for her support during this time). We’ve tried various extras such as roof windows, log burner, 220v and 12v electrical systems, all with great results. Changes are inevitable, but at the moment, the price for a basic cabin (fully insulated, with wooden joinery, pine tongue and groove lining, bamboo flooring, delivered locally) is $25,000 including GST. www.facebook.com/harthouse-cabins info@harthouse.co.nz

HOLIDAY AT HOME WITH BOX™ Kiwi holidays are made for sun, sea and casual living and at Box™, we believe in designing your home to capture a lightness of being that feels almost bach-like. That’s probably why we’ve built so many homes in the region. Modernist good-looks with full-height windows and openplan spaces team with materials that hark of nostalgia but are hardwearing to take the knocks of family life. Some examples include a simple yet spectacular escape overlooking Pakiri Beach where a living and dining pod is joined to a bedroom pod by a covered outdoor deck; a retreat in Waipu with vertical cedar cladding that wraps to the interior to create a smart yet relaxed feel; and a Mangawhai property with an L-shaped courtyard and a sunken firepit for long, sociable evenings. At Box™, we’re an all-in-one team of architects, interior designers, quantity surveyors and project managers. Every home is drawn and crafted by people who give a damn. 0800 717 717 www.box.co.nz

Ann Motion has spent 35 years as an interior designer of superyachts and residential homes. She and husband John recently built ‘The Hill’ in Matakana. Ann wanted rich colour and texture in the TV room. The bold rug provides a focal point and the blue-green cushions and artwork create a vibrant palette.

KEEPING IT BESPOKE WORDS

When you hang your hat on a name like Bespoke Homes, you leave no room for mediocrity. Your modus operandi calls for strong design and high quality. Bespoke Homes is the collaboration between Mangawhai locals, Scott Manwaring and Gareth Denysschen. Born from a desire to create beautiful spaces, the doors swung open in October last year. The pair are excited about their mission. “Our work is highly personalised, the antithesis of a group housing formula – Bespoke Homes creates

our client’s vision, not the other way around. House plans are individual, with a focus on unique features and materials,” Scott explains. Expect mood-boards, tons of frank discussion, sound advice and plenty of laughter. On site the sub-contractors are as invested in the process as the client, with Gareth saying, “Our culture is king, everyone shares the vision. Client communication is key – with each step of the construction process

outlined. While our builds are bespoke — an architectural feel doesn’t have to be expensive. Thinking outside the box when it comes to quality allows us to achieve fantastic results.” Behind Bespoke Homes is about 24 years of industry experience, represented by a welldesigned office space in Mangawhai. www.bespokehomes.co.nz 6 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai

MUNRO & CO With more than 20 years design experience in Auckland, Munro & Co are expanding their interior design business into the Junction region, basing themselves between Herne Bay and Mangawhai. Munro & Co’s specialty is combining minimalist décor with textures to create the perfect balance. “Ultimately though, good design is about being able to see the home owner’s personality shine through,” says designer Kim Munro. “Coastal living is all about the relaxed feel — cosy and inviting textures make for gorgeous interiors. Whether it’s a beach house or country lodge — natural materials connect interior spaces to the surrounding environment. The overall palette of colours is subdued and tactile.” Munro & Co have built up a strong base of trusted suppliers of both indoor and outdoor furniture, custom-made furniture with aged finishes, soft furnishings, rugs, kubu cane and rattan, a range of flooring materials, lighting, art and accessories. So, what’s coming for 2017 décor? Well, a bit of warmth is chic again,” says Kim Munro. “The crispy white interiors are making way for soft, warm tones. Camel, tobacco, blonde and beige are coming into their own.” Watch this space… info@munroandco.nz 021 519 519

SIGN OF THE TIMES WORDS

LUKE

Hand-crafted, bespoke, one-off . . . call it what you will, but there is a strong desire these days for specialist, unique and well-made items. That is where artist Denis Bourke has found a niche for hand-painted signs. “People want hand-made. There is a reaction against machine-made and creativity is back in. And a hand-painted sign only gets better with age,” he adds with a smile. Denis is a multi-skilled artist with a background in art teaching and design. He taught himself the skills of hand-painting signs after buying a rundown signage business in Warkworth just as the industry went digital. He was especially attracted by all the skills involved – brush, lettering, design, illustration – skills which had suddenly become obsolete when the industry became digitized in the late-80s. His stall at the Matakana Market features recreations of AA road signs with appealing directions to ‘Paradise’ and the like, and other customised signage for home, bach and business.

You can also commission a personalised sign. “There’s a steady flow of work. A lot of people are attracted to the inherent qualities of the signs so it’s just a matter of guiding them through what they actually want. I enjoy that design process.” Denis points out that his signs make a really good point of difference for any business, but particularly if they are involved in making handmade products themselves. “These signs are something that will help you really stand out from the crowd and they will stand the test of time, both physically and artistically.” Denis tells me there are whole websites dedicated to ‘ghost’ signage – old signs on derelict buildings – and collecting vintage signs. Original handpainted signs have become very collectable so your Denis Bourke sign of today could become a collectors’ item for your children. It’s worth finding out. www.denisbourke.org

Use my recipe (online at Wild Delicious) or whip up your own favourite recipe. If you’re in a hurry, use frozen! In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar for 3–4 minutes with an electric hand mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly. Add the ground almonds, lemon zest and juice, and fold in carefully until thoroughly combined. Spoon half the mixture into the tart case, spoon over dots of Damson jam, push in the apricot halves and top with the rest of the almond mixture. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove the tart from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool a little before removing from the tin. Serve warm, with lashings of cream and plenty of tea. www.wilddelicious.com @wild_delicious

ARTS

ARTIST ‘DRIFTS’ INTO NEW TERRITORY WORDS

KIRSTY

MILLAR

What happens when joy has up and left the building? Do you tip everything you know on its head and reboot? Internationally renowned artist, Wendy Leach, did just that. Wendy discovered her passion for landscape painting had dwindled. In its place, she yearned for the unknown – where the paint could hit the canvas completely devoid of a plan. Scary, yes. Wendy bid farewell to a tried and truly brilliant realist art career, turning to abstract instead. Wendy has 20 solo exhibitions behind her and has run several workshops. Painting has taken her on European stints to reflect, create, exhibit and teach. For many years, Wendy led group tours to Italy, and she has been profiled in International Artist magazine. But it was studying for a Master of Fine Arts that flipped her direction. Receiving First Class Honours in 2008, Wendy found this period to be filled with self-discovery, commitment, and in her case, unlearning. Making a radical change in her art process, Wendy ignored

the habits of a realist painter. Clearing her mind of any plan, she learnt to ‘feel it, not think it.’ Wendy says, “My work now has no subject, paint marks are made intuitively from any side of the canvas and my mind doesn’t intervene in the process. Even the titles are fluid, revealed after the last paint splash, such as Flourish, Shindig, Twirl. I’m so energised by this style - it leads me, rather than me taking control.” Like what you see? Grab tickets to an upcoming gala dinner at Plume in Matakana www.matacarnival.co.nz. This important fundraising initiative will raise funds for a carpark at Matakana School. A luxurious ‘Artist by the Sea’ package has been donated by Wendy, to be auctioned on the night. The prize includes one of Wendy’s significant new works, Drift, plus a weekend of hospitality and art discovery at her incredible new home in Mangawhai. www.wendyleach.com

NOT JUST FLOWERS WORDS

KATHY

HUNTER

This much-anticipated annual group show promises to be a visual delight. Flowers are the focus of the wide-ranging exhibition, which includes painting, photography, ceramics, installation, print and weaving. Raewyn Turner and Brian Harris have created an extraordinary work, Fallible, which combines science, art and music. The scents of fresh flowers in a rotating vase are assessed by a computer microprocessor as voltage, which is then presented as synthesized piano notes. The sound changes as the flowers wilt and die. The live work will be in the gallery for just one week – while the flowers last – after which there’ll be a video and a large-scale print of a video still available. Deborah Crowe’s work observes the beauty and symbolism of flowers. These lush prints “emerge from the pictorial framework of an ‘everyday’ cut floral arrangement as dishevelled mash-ups, which explore, explode and graft flora.” Matakana ceramicist Liz Sharek describes the starting point for her botanical pieces as “the Romeos and Juliets of the plant world.” She has anthropomorphised the botany of flowers, and it’s all about procreation... Other artists include: Emma Bass, M J Binks, Cathy Carter, Janette Cervin, Philip Jarvis, Cruz Jimenez, Georgie Malyon, Antonio Murado, Alexis Neal, Mandy Thomsett-Taylor and Neal Palmer. www.thevivian.co.nz Opens Saturday (4-6pm) 4th March to 9th April 2017

SETTING THE PATTERN WORDS

SUE

WELFORD

Leanne Kemp, librarian at Maungatapere Primary School, has won Waipu’s iconic Art’n Tartan Wearable Art contest twice now. She reckons both her creative grandmother and mother set the pattern for her sewing skills.

In 2015 her ‘Lady Angie Neer’ creation involved a stylised kilt made of an unusual tartan with pleated side panels and kilt pins, 2016 saw ‘Seasonal Goddess, Queen of Winter’. Both won the coveted McNeedle & Thread award.

Leanne was using a sewing machine by the age of seven. At eight, her grandmother took her shopping for fabric to make a dress. “It was for a little sundress, a simple design in bright, multi-coloured material,” Leanne says.

When asked what advice Leanne would give to first-time entrants, she said. “Once you decide to enter, commit to it and persevere.”

Her love for sewing is such that she develops withdrawal symptoms if away from her machine for long. When she discovered the Art’nTartan show, Leanne knew it was an opportunity to further challenge her creative skills.

JACKIE BRISTOW AT THE LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE WORDS

CLINTON

HOWLETT

The iconic Leigh Sawmill Café has had another epic summer hosting a swag of home-grown and international musical talents, and the hits are set to keep rolling well into 2017. Hot off a show opening for Foreigner in the United States and following the success of her fourth studio album Shot of Gold, South Island talent Jackie Bristow is returning to New Zealand from her new home in LA. She’ll appear in a string of shows with good friend Mark Punch (from the Kasey Chambers band) along with two shows opening for blues icon Bonnie Raitt on their second tour together in NZ. Jackie has been the opening act for many other well-known names over the years: The Steve Miller Band, Tommy Emmanuel, Rick Springfield, Phoebe Snow and Art Garfunkel, just to name a few. With a style influenced by Americana, folk, country and soul, Jackie Bristow brings true musical talent to any performance. “When you’re the opening act you normally have a short set and you have to win your audience over quickly as they’re really there for the main act. I love playing the big shows, but I also love playing on my own in a more intimate setting. Knowing that my fans have bought a ticket to hear me feels good!” 4.30pm 12th March, Leigh Sawmill Cafe www.sawmillcafe.co.nz

WALK OF THE MONTH

TANEKAHA FALLS TRACK WORDS

Gordon Hoskings is the Walks Coordinator of the upcoming Mangawhai Walking Weekend (March 24th, 25th, 26th). He tells us about his new favourite walk. The Tanekaha Falls Track, on the southern slopes of the Brynderwyn Hills, is pretty close to perfect. It’s cool and shady, has a tumbling stream to keep you company and lots of special interests along the way. What more could you ask?

GORDON

HOSKINGS

From the carpark, just off King Road, stroll to the swing bridge, and after the kids give it a few bounces, cross over to the grassy picnic area at Terry’s Rest. The Falls Track heads up the stream, passing an enormous Totara tree, with the first waterfall and pool about 40 minutes away. A couple more stream crossings leads to the second waterfall and seat – and the workout begins! Steep sections of track climb towards

the Brynderwyn ridge, with some spectacular waterfalls on the way. You’ll also see the remains of a kauri dam with explanatory notes and photos. Finally there’s a steep climb up to the Langsview Track. Good boots and a pole are recommended to aid stream crossings. You can do this walk as part of the Tanekaha Loop Walk or Tanakaha Falls/Puriri Track. www.mangawhaiwalking.co.nz
