SPOTLIGHT
WARKWORTH STARS ON THE SMALL SCREEN WORDS
Warkworth has a starring role in the comedy/ drama TV series 800 Words, where it has been renamed as the fictional town of Weld. The show follows widower George Turner, a popular newspaper columnist (hence the title 800 words) after he impulsively quits his job in Australia and buys a house in a remote seaside town in New Zealand. That’s where Warkworth enters the scene. “Warkworth was chosen as a location because it evokes the essence of a small New Zealand town, one that most folks would like to live in – a mix of the old and new and very photogenic,” says Chris Bailey, Managing Director of South Pacific

hub of the town,” says Chris.
“When our hero George Turner decided he’d like to move back here from Sydney, he needed to feel it really was the place he’d like to bring his kids to.”
“The locals of Warkworth have been welcoming to the film crew and actors. We’ve had terrific support from the local community and our team are always very aware of trying not to impinge on the daily goings on in the town,” says Chris.
George’s two teenage children, Shay and Arlo, are caught off-guard by the move. Luckily, the family are welcomed by the colourful characters of Warkw- uh I mean Weld. “Weld, being fictional, is actually a mix of many locations, from the surrounds of North Auckland, as well as West Coast beaches and even the Manukau Harbour stretching as far as Huia. But we always come back to Warkworth as being the
“Occasionally we ask for understanding with regards to bigger impact scenes, but most of the locals see the positive side of it all. It does mean there’s money coming into the community, with location fees that we pay, not only for filming but also for crew bases. There are frequently coffees and snacks being bought by our crews as well.”
800 Words debuted in 2015 and is now in its third season. It’s a joint effort, being co-produced by South Pacific Pictures from New Zealand and Seven Productions from Australia. The show has won a couple of awards so far. Erik Thomson, who plays the lead role of George Turner, won a Silver Logie (Australia’s version of an Emmy) for Best Actor in 2016. Melina Vidler, who plays his daughter Shay, won a Logie for Most Outstanding Newcomer. 800 Words was also nominated for Best Drama Program and Most Outstanding Drama Series. The third season will be returning soon to TV One and The Seven Network in Australia. “There are still eight episodes to screen both here and in Australia, so we hope it remains popular,” says Chris. He believes that the show is a great showcase for the photogenic surroundings. “I think it brings tourists into the area,” he said. “800 Words is screened in several countries around the world, and filming in attractive locations such as this certainly adds to tourist interest in the beautiful parts of our country.” Chris said that the filming around Warkworth has already attracted a few local spectators. “We see small groups of folks watching filming – most are very supportive and just keen to see how things operate,” he says. Regular TV watchers will recognise a few familiar faces. Peter Elliot, who plays Bill McNamara in 800 Words, has appeared on Shortland Street and Gloss, as well as several movies such as Heavenly Creatures. John Leigh, who plays Constable Tom, has appeared in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, as well as Shortland Street, Mercy Peak, and Outrageous Fortune. “Most of our cast are either from Australia or New Zealand towns and cities,” says Chris. “We like to use local extras where possible.” So keep your eyes peeled for the rest of season three – you might even see someone you know. www.southpacificpictures.co.nz

“A sanctuary in nature’s paradise” is the strapline for Miller’s Ark. For once, the advertising is true. Nestled behind the sand dunes of Pakiri Beach is a lush sub-tropical garden, an extraordinary and eccentric home, a rentable studio and gorgeous rustic wedding venue. And it was all lovingly built and planted by hand over decades by Paul and Josephine Miller. You may know them as that nice couple tending the ‘I Love Pies’ stall at Matakana Farmers Markets. The pie business belongs to one of their daughters, but mum and dad keep up a local presence going by getting up at 5am every Saturday and opening the stall at 8. Hard work, (“and getting harder!” says Jo) but they love the busy market. These two definitely know how to put in the hard yards. Driving through the Pakiri paddocks to get to Miller’s Ark you’re eventually greeted by what hip gardeners would call a food forest. There’s a huge clump of highly productive banana trees, an orchard closely planted with pomegranates, figs, citrus and grapes; vege gardens, tropical flowers and an olive grove which has produced 200L of prize-winning oil in a year. They used to press it by hand, but now take it along to Whangaripo

Valley’s Olive Place. Birds, bees and butterflies abound here. The birdlife is fiercely protected – there are endangered bittern and fernbirds in the many acres of pristine wetland behind the dunes, kookaburra and kaka in the bush, and dotterel, pied stilts and rare fairy terns on the wild miles of beach, just eight minutes’ walk from the olive grove. Paul bought the land with a group of other likeminded individuals when he was 21. He was a potter and had been living up on Pakiri hill. He built a bigger kiln down at the beach and made a good living from his work. Josephine arrived one day with friends… and never left. She was 24, immersed in the fashion world at Auckland’s ‘Tiger Moth’ boutique. She had “put it out to the universe that she was looking for a potter who lived by the beach.” She’s pretty sure there was a dog and a Landrover in there, too. Paul had told a friend he’d quite like a Sagittarian redhead. “Oh yes, we were definitely meant to meet. We couldn’t have done this with anyone else for a partner,” Josephine says. They smile at each other.
In the early years, the girls to the local country primary school in Tomorata. Josephine and Paul milked goats by hand to make cheese of some renown, which Jo drove down to city delicatessens. Paul meanwhile worked his clay and went about the endless job of finishing the house. The whole family moved down to Auckland for the girls’ secondary education and the couple returned with renewed vigour 15 years later. The garden was planted on sand; they laugh when asked how much compost they’ve hauled in by hand. “It’s nearly broken our bodies, but our souls are well nourished,” Josephine says. “I do feel that it might just be our life’s work – creating what is, to us, our Garden of Eden. Every person who comes here says it feels like a healing and relaxing place, and it’s wonderful to be able to bring that to people who need it.” The self-contained studio has been adored by many, and they’ve added to it with a tempting outdoor bath. As a wedding venue, it’s a picture of rustic romance, but they only host a couple annually. The marquee goes up at the far end of the olive grove. “They string lights through the trees… it’s very beautiful. We’ve got it down to a fine art now.”
Some couples have the ceremony on the beach then walk back to the garden for the reception. Glamping has worked well in the past, but there’s plenty of local accommodation at the Pakiri Beach Holiday Park and at Pakiri Beach Horse Rides. It’s always been a little remote out here, and that’s just how they like it. But Paul and Josephine are finding that there’s more action than ever along the beach. Te Araroa Walkway trampers often pop in – the Millers are ‘Trail Angels’. Weary travellers walking the length of New Zealand are welcome to pop in for some sustenance and to tend their aches and pains. This couple have cleverly reinvented themselves to support their vision for the land and their lifestyle, but new subdivisions along Pakiri Block Road are multiplying, and the exclusive Tara Iti Golf Club at nearby Te Arai attracts international guests. Peaceful vibrations at Millers Ark are now regularly replaced by the very loud vibrations of helicopters bearing wealthy golfers northward. Paul and Josephine may represent a new endangered species: the original Pakiri lifestylers. www.bookabach.co.nz – Miller’s Ark #20736

NUKU – ECO-PRINTCESS Humans have used plants to dye fabrics for centuries. Now this art form is being revisited by those who mindfully produce “slow fashion” in their search for images and colour in nature. Nuku was created by Karen Williamson, a local artist who has a passion for creating beautiful eco-printed silk scarves and clothing. “My textile work captures the life force of my environment on natural fibres using leaves, bark, flowers and seeds, representing a sense of place and season. Papatūānuku, the earth mother, is cared for by using sustainable and ethical principles – in taking from the earth, Nuku gives back to the earth.” The garments are upcycled from previous lives, consistent with Nuku’s sustainable ethos. With Nuku textiles, you also know exactly who created your clothes. Karen’s Instagram, @nukutextiles, gives insight into the products and the processes used to create them. Karen uses native plants for many of her creations, along with a diversity of other species, and each piece has a list of the plants used, on its label. There is a luscious quality to the scarves and clothing, a bit like rolling in the leaves imprinted on the textiles. Nuku textiles are natural, fascinating and a little opulent. They are a treasure in anyone’s wardrobe and make wonderful gifts, especially when you want to send someone a unique flavour of Aotearoa. Nuku products can be found at local outlets Kleur Gallery, Tea & Tonic, Twig & Bloom. They are also available online at www.nuku.net.nz and other outlets throughout Aotearoa. www.nuku.net.nz

MINNIESDALE CHAPEL On a stunning site overlooking the Oruawharo River, Minniesdale Chapel is the oldest surviving church in South Albertland. The timber framework and stainedglass windows of this little Gothic building were brought to New Zealand from England by the Rev. E. S. Brookes (snr) a driving force behind the 1860s Albertland Emigration Scheme. George Wilcockson erected the Chapel on land donated by Hovey Brookes, Rev Brookes’ son. Minniesdale opened for worship in December 1867; nine weeks later Henry Marsh married Elizabeth Jerome in the Chapel’s first wedding ceremony. A listed Historic Places Trust building, Minniesdale Chapel has been in use for 150 years and can be hired for private functions. Seating 60 comfortably, the Chapel is ideal for an intimate wedding. Considering how much we promote our beautiful coastline in this region, there are surprisingly few places you can have a meal and look out on the sea. It’s time to add a venue to that small list. Rainbow’s End is gorgeous. Dominic is a Kiwi who honed his chef skills in France and Italy. After returning home, he’s spent the last decade building a successful catering business in and around Auckland. Christina was born in Canada and after many years as a flight attendant and chief steward in the yachting industry moved to New Zealand with Dominic to raise a family and continue her career in the service industry. Starting Kawau Bay
Kitchen with Dominic is a natural next move. “This is what we love doing. It allows us to do what we’re good at while giving us more time together as a family.” You don’t have to be a member of the yacht club to dine there so everyone is welcome. Dominic likes to focus on high quality ingredients from local suppliers, classic kiwi fare and of equal importance: affordability. “We have kept all the prices competitive," explains Christina. “We want
this to be a place that locals frequent because they love the atmosphere, the quality and value we provide. We want our customers to feel the same sense of pride that we do.” Kawau Bay Kitchen offers an amazing wine selection and local beers from Leigh Sawmill. The menu is relaxed and includes favourites like fish and chips, burgers and curry. Dominic also comes up with new specials each weekend that are a little more refined. A new Malaysian sous chef is joining the team and there will be some dishes based on his unique skills. Bookings are encouraged as most Friday and Saturday nights are full. Christina also welcomes any enquiries for weddings, birthday parties or other social occasions. So, set sail for this unique dining location soon and enjoy the amazing view, the delicious food and the relaxed atmosphere. We do like to be beside the seaside. info@akk.nz 021 161 5045

RINGAWERA CAFÉ
As you pull into the pretty tree lined driveway at Morris & James, it’s hard to believe that 40 years ago all this was a neglected, gorse ridden farm. Now there is easy parking and the gentle sound of chirping birds, and gravel underfoot. It is the perfect backdrop to feed your soul with art and steal some time for a coffee. Now there is another reason to visit Morris & James. Looking for a new challenge, Patrick Griffiths, has brought his successful Waiheke Island Café ‘Ringawera’ (aptly translated as ‘hot hands’) to Matakana. Baked goods fresh from the oven are at the heart of Patrick’s Café, including his special recipe ciabatta for the burger buns that will be sorely missed on Waiheke Island. Gluten-free options are available with the polenta chips coming highly recommended.
food, salads and burgers. New ideas include collaboration with the artisans to create serveware for the Café and live weekend entertainment by Patrick’s band. But change takes time and Patrick is discerning about how he can add a new twist while respecting the rich legacy that is Morris & James. 09 422 7484
Patrick bakes from scratch using quality ingredients with no additives or preservatives and organic where possible. Stop in after a bike ride and refuel with a ‘Bronut’ - a decadent brioche filled with custard and jam. Grab some irresistibly flaky croissants made with pure NZ butter for a weekend lunch, or drool over the frangipani tarts created with seasonal fruits. Ringawera is a great option as a new local brunch spot to catch up with friends and whanau. Sit under the cherry tree for a relaxed Matakana experience as the kids play in the castle nearby. You can order a coffee in Te Reo Maori by following the signs and let the smell of fresh bread and coffee uplift your spirit. PROPERTY PROFILE MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE TEAM AT JUNCTION MAGAZINE
Q&A WITH THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OF BOATHOUSE BAY
Award winning landscape architects Boffa Miskell have brought their expertise in landscape architecture to the Boathouse Bay development, Snells Beach, enhancing the value and sustainability of the natural, built and social environment. Renowned landscape architect Rachel de Lambert and her team have taken the lead in creating a unique landscape design, which includes revegetation of grazed pasture and, working with coastal process specialist Jim Dahm, restoration of sand dunes. What natural characteristics of this site really appealed to you when you first visited? The site is amazing in terms of its natural attributes, it’s tucked in at the end of Snells Beach with a forested escarpment and headland behind and the long sweep of the bay in front. A totally dramatic New Zealand coastal landscape.
What were the key elements that you wanted to include in the design? We were keen to set the scene for a community of people living in a really special environment who would know each other and feel part of a small enclave, not a gated community but a place set apart from the norm. Boathouse Bay isn’t a suburban development it’s designed as a community where public, communal and private meld into a special living environment. It’s like a mews development where the shared space sets stage for people feeling they belong. What features have been incorporated to allow this to be the low-maintenance property that the buyers are looking for? We’re creating a very low maintenance, rough, coastal look, using indigenous plants that grow naturally here on the coast. We are investing in plants for the long term, quality species chosen to
look after themselves after a few years. All the other materials we use will be hard-wearing as well and belong to this landscape – from shells to hardwood. What elements have been incorporated to future proof the design? The main future proofing lies in the levels of the site; sea level rise and coastal storms are obviously a key consideration so the house floor levels as well as the level of the actual site have been carefully set in that respect. Then it comes back to materials and plant selection, we have specified hardy, robust native plants and durable materials with an eye to longevity. At the end of the day there’s no such thing as ‘no maintenance’ but Boathouse Bay has been designed with consideration given to nature of the environment and to how people want to live. www.boathousebay.co.nz

Mangawhai has a new romantic accommodation option for honeymooners or others wanting to cosy up with each other and forget about the rest of the world.
the two designer pods – named Manuka and Kowhai – both have large bay windows that look out over a picturesque pond. Some guests have described it as ‘living inside a painting’.
Music store owner John Eady and his wife, photographer Kelley Eady Loveridge, have created the two private pods that are getting rave reviews on Airbnb for their unique and ‘zen-like’ style.
“The window seat almost feels like you cantilever over the pond. There’s interesting birdlife and even a wild turtle, and we get some quite rare ducks coming in as well,” said John.

One of the key comments we’ve had from people is that they all sleep very well,” said John. Each pod will sleep up to four, and the property is within walking distance of the bustling Mangawhai village, including the popular

Add a little more romance with some star gazing in comfort: a big sky light directly over the beds in each room opens them up to the night sky. “We took inspiration from a number of places that we stayed, in New Zealand and overseas, when putting together the design elements. We wanted the pods to rest lightly on the edge of the pond, so there’s no concrete,” says John.
just because it’s the best view but also to keep them cool. We insulated them well – four times what is necessary from council perspective – so that helps keep the place warm in winter and cool in summer,” he says. The couple has been hands-on through the process – from project managing the build, to doing all the landscaping and even building the furniture. “We did most things ourselves. There’s no need for a professional designer – we just do it because we enjoy it.” www.facebook.com/mangawhaipods

MASTER CRAFTSMEN
WRW FURNITURE
‘It all started when someone said, “Can you make me a dining table?”’ William Worsp could indeed make that table and much more besides. Will grew up on a farm in the Waikato but spent quality time at the family bach in Raglan which is where he chose to start his furniture and interior design business.
Will and his wife Imogen are in the process of moving home and business to Matakana in order to enjoy the lifestyle of the area. Will is also hoping that his French cabinet-maker, Faustin Duprat, will join him in the north, although dragging him away from the surf at Raglan could be tricky.
WRW & Co. has been in business for five years and Will has just opened a showroom in Matakana on the corner of Leigh Road and Omaha Valley Road. ‘90% of our work is custom designed but the showroom is a great place to display our ideas and show customers some hands-on furniture to inspire them.’
While the current trend seems to be towards exotic timbers such as ash, oak and New Zealand Oregon, Will happily uses native timbers. ‘All our timber is from sustainable sources,’ he tells me as we admire the character and hidden stories contained in some of the recycled pieces in the showroom.
Will explains that a commission for one piece of furniture often leads to further work when he meets the client and discusses how the pieces will fit into their home. WRW & Co. works on everything from single, small pieces of furniture, through to full bar and restaurant fit-outs, and Will is happy to discuss anything in between. He has a beautiful website to inspire you, and the showroom is a great opportunity to literally get the feel of Will’s work and become inspired as you share his passion for handmade, beautiful furniture. www. wrw.co.nz

For half a century, the Tomarata stalwart has donated time and money to her community, lending a helping hand to community groups including the Plunket Society, Tomarata Primary school, Wellsford Patchwork Group, Brownies, Citizens Advice Bureau, the Tomarata Tennis Club and Lake Restoration Committee. This January, she received a well-deserved Queen’s Service Medal for her services to the Tomarata community. “I was raised to value helping others. bunch of ladies from the Forest Reserve branch of Rural Women NZ,” she says. “When we see how much we’ve raised for good causes such as the Westpac helicopter, breast cancer research and Hospice, there is a real sense of satisfaction.” Doing good deeds is a win-win scenario. Losing two family members last year left Isobel bereft, however she discovered that, “the support I gave to the community over the years came back to me a hundredfold during this difficult period.” With today’s hectic, hermetic, transient lives there’s more need than ever for close-knittedness. Thanks to social media, our “communities” have gone global, but many people don’t know their neighbours. Instagram followers can’t help if there’s a break in, a lost cat, or a child gone
walkabout after dusk nor can they pop over with a casserole in times of distress. Science has proven that the more we give, the happier we feel. Helping others increases self confidence, gives a sense of accomplishment, purpose and pride. Connecting with others can be just writing a note to someone who has helped you or holding the door open for a stranger. Those with some spare time could consider helping a cause or local group. AMY WAGSTAFF HARCOURTS: TANDEM REALTY NORTH
Everyone has a story to tell, and Rebecka can help you tell yours. It’s all about finding the right audience and the perfect way to say it. Rebecka knows – she has more than ten years of international experience in media and communications.
Provide a brief overview of your career background.
“If you need a news story, press release, logo, marketing advice, or a website or blog, I can help,” says Rebecka.
I started selling houses when I was 23. I excelled in sales but decided that I wanted to take on a leadership role. After a few years as a manager I made an offer to my boss to become his business partner and that is when I became the Co-Director of the Harcourts: Warkworth and Snells Beach offices. What unique skills and abilities do you feel women bring to your industry?
After working in New Zealand, the Middle East and her native Sweden, Rebecka and her husband Reuben settled in Warkworth last year, where they started their own boutique agency: RK Communications.
Women often excel in real estate because they have a great sense for what people want and need. It can be quite an emotional time for people; women tend to have great empathy and the ability to be calm and helpful.
“We’ve worked in a range of industries – from technology and music to food and sustainability – with clients like Microsoft, Hotels.com, Absolut Vodka and Puhoi Cheese,” says Rebecka.
Which female entrepreneur do you admire the most?
“This area has been incredibly welcoming, and I would love to help more local businesses succeed.” Rebecka loves a challenge – her latest is horseback archery – so get in touch with her today.
My first real estate Manager/Owner. What challenges have you faced as a women in business or female business owner? I don’t consider being a “female” to be a challenge. My challenges would be the same as any woman or man. I just want to grow and shape my business and people to reach their highest potential. What advice would you offer to other female entrepreneurs? Have goals and strive for them. Think positively. Work hard. Put people first. Licensed Agent REAA 2008

DEB CROWE BOARD + BATTEN Provide a brief overview of your career background. I specialised as a theatre nurse originally, and then was fortunate enough to embark on my other passion, which is interior design. I had one of the first home-staging businesses in Auckland, and from there have worked in luxury interior brands for the last 2 3 years, with B oard + Batten commencing 7 years ago. What unique skills and abilities do you feel women bring to your industry? Women generally are heartfelt and come from their intuition. I find people respond to the fact I listen, and am therefore allowed to push boundaries and embellish their ideas. Which female entrepreneur do you admire the most? As a designer, Kelly Wearstler. As a business woman, Oprah Winfrey. What challenges have you faced as a woman in business or female business owner? It would be easier to say "what I haven't"? What advice would you offer to other female entrepreneurs? Stay true to your dream and passion, and treat people the way you would want to be treated.
KATYA MAKER Provide a brief overview of your career background. I become a university graduate at 21 years of age. The career choices I have made since have always been in industries involving people, learning and beautiful objects. I find great joy in making women feel good about themselves and helping them realise beauty is not just a reflexion in the mirror. What unique skills and abilities do you feel women bring to your industry? I believe the greatest advantage women have is their sense of empathy which is essential when relating with customers and enables you to build an honest bond. Which female entrepreneur do you admire the most? Dianne Von Furstenberg for becoming an icon in the fashion world by following her own instincts, doing it ‘her way’ and achieving her dream of becoming ‘the woman she has always wanted to be’. What challenges have you faced as a woman in business or female business owner? I have faced many. Uncertainty. Fear. Both of failure, but also of success. What advice would you offer to other female entrepreneurs?
Live in your truth. Get good advice, but select carefully. Stay fearless.
Find what it is that you are good at, and every day, sharpen your saw and seek to become better. Use any advantages you were blessed with to help propel you forward, in front of the competition.

WARKWORTH WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Warkworth WI is alive and well and about to enter its 79th year. The numbers are smaller than in the past but the same enthusiasm is present when they gather at their monthly meetings. 97 years ago, the first Country Women’s Institute was founded in Hawkes Bay (following those in Canada and the UK) and it spread rapidly throughout NZ. The term “Country” in the title was dropped some years ago as WIs were formed in urban areas. City women wanted the same fun and fellowship as their country sisters.
Recently groups of younger women are showing an interest in joining WI to share or learn craft skills and enjoy friendship at evening meetings. We would love such a group to start here in Warkworth. Twice yearly Auckland North Federation group comprising Warkworth, Matakana, North Albertland, Coatesville, Hibiscus and Browns Bay meet to compete in crafts, floral arrangements and cookery sections as well as hearing great speakers. Together the WIs support North Shore Hospital Auxiliary with donations of knitted items
for premature babies, slippers, shoulder capes and knee rugs also emergency toilet bags and hospital dolls from the fingers of our crafty members. Last year we supported the tiny Pakiri school, raising funds for them, donating fruit trees for the school grounds and several boxes of books for the library. If this sounds like you, you are most welcome in the WI. Warkworth meets on the second Tuesday each month at 1.30pm. For other areas contact exec@wi.org.nz. 09 425 0089

CHERISH MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE TEAM AT JUNCTION MAGAZINE
KAIPARA FLATS LIBRARY CELEBRATES 140 YEARS
The Kaipara Flats library was established in 1878, in the old school room, situated at the top end of Thomson Road. The teacher at the time held the position of librarian and was reputed to have spent much of his “schoolteaching” time reading library books. In October 1907 there were 1700 books and a growing school roll, so it was found necessary to erect a small library building in the school grounds. In 1917 both buildings were moved down the hill, on runners pulled by T. Gubb’s bullock team of eighteen and there the library remained until a new building, the present one, was built in 1925. The building is unusual, as it has never had electricity so visits had to be made in the daytime. For an evening meeting the chairman would bring his tilley lamps, one for the table and the other hung from the ceiling. The collection includes historical books on Kaipara Flats and surrounding districts, that are no longer available in other libraries. An honesty, selfhelp system is in place today, with subscribers holding their own keys. Subscriptions and fund-raising have kept the library funded and functioning to this day. Membership is only $15 per family per year. Kaipara Flats Pioneer Day: Wear 19th Century Costume and come along to enjoy music, art, poetry, tearooms, raffles, games, prizes and books. Bring coins for purchases. 2pm Sunday 25 March. 21 Old Kaipara Flats Road, Kaipara Flats.

ARTS
TATJANA PANYOCZKI WORDS
Frequenters of contemporary art galleries in Auckland will be familiar with Tatjana Panyoczki’s work. She’s been a full-time jeweller for two decades, with work in five galleries nationally and in Melbourne, too. Her deeply crafted pieces blur the lines between jewellery and sculpture. “I think of them really as objects that can be worn on the body,” she says. We meet in the home she shares with artist Peter Panyoczki and their son Janos in Kaiwaka. It’s a modest, barn-like building externally, but the interior possesses the kind of effortless European style one would expect from a Swiss/Hungarian couple who have spent their lives dedicated to the arts. Tatjana is dressed in jeans and a plain grey t-shirt, with no makeup and her curly hair tied back: she is wholesome, practical, contained. She makes tea and shows me what she’s putting together – a

retrospective display of her work in media ranging from silver to Perspex, wood, wax and wool. “These represent my last 20 years – or maybe my first?” she says quizzically. She and Peter are finally exhibiting their work together at their local gallery. “Mangawhai Artists Incorporated have asked us a few times, but there was always something going on,” she ruefully admits. Now, from February 22, the Moir Street gallery in Mangawhai will be filled with the couples’ internationally-renowned art. Some of the first work Tatjana did when she left her four-year Unitec course in 1998 has been her most enduring and continues to enjoys a brisk turnover. It’s her ‘Wrapped’ series: each ‘bead’ is crafted from multiple layers of metals rolled to 0.3mm thick. The top layer is usually textured and must be the right length to wrap the shape so the ends meet exactly. “My maths is quite good now,”
she says, wryly. Finally, the inner rims are painted using a technique perfected by long experience. Other boards show bracelets from 2006 of silver and brightly-coloured Perspex, domestically inspired by preserving seals; silver box necklaces from 2007; colourful woollen pompoms dipped in wax from 2009. And rings of all metals, shapes and sizes. Tatjana receives regular commissions to make wedding rings, including those for what she believes was the first gay marriage in the country. Her ‘In the Picture’ series features thin crosssections of elaborate picture frames crafted into extravagant neckpieces. One was a finalist in the 2017 Contemporary Wearables Biennial Jewellery Award at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and has now been acquired for the gallery’s permanent collection. But some of Tatjana’s most recent work is inspired by tragedy – a house fire at her parents’ home
in Northland. Luckily, no-one was harmed, but sifting through the ashes she became fascinated by the effect of the extreme heat on various metals. ‘Vestige’ was the title of the first exhibition of this work at Avid in Wellington in November last year: melted, blackened, twisted and flattened, it’s different to anything she’s done before. “This process is organic, random – almost biomorphic,” she says. “So not me!” But a range of single earrings (“it’s hopeless trying to make a pair,”) fashioned from these found materials have flown out the door. 2018 holds potential new directions for the Panyoczkis. Peter has been awarded a 3-month James Wallace residency in Vladivostok, Russia, and Tatjana is going with him (Janos, too, for a month). It’s a vibrant city of 600,000 on the Pacific coast, 100km from the North Korean border. “Who knows what will come of it?” she says. “I’m just going to keep my mind open and soak it all up.” We’re sure there’ll be plenty of inspiration to kick-start the next 20 years of creative excellence. Exhibition: 22 February - 7 March Mangawhai Artists Inc, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz

SECOND BLOOM: ART OF THE TABLE
ADVENTURES IN MODERN MARRIAGE
BY CATHY GRAHAM
BY WILLIAM NICHOLSON
Artist, collector, and entertaining guru Cathy Graham shares her secrets for making every event shine—flowers, paper components, table setting, and food presentation. Graham demonstrates how to arrange flowers and create original touches, such as hand-drawn one-of-a-kind invitations or her unique practice of scattering collectable miniatures on her dinner tables.
Focusing on the Broad family, this is a dissection of relationships and what keeps them going. It is an acute and compassionate look at male mid-life crises, female sexual desire, death and the fear of it, children and the trouble with them - all the things we battle with every day.

SHAPESHIFTER ARE BACK! INTERVIEW
Saturday, 31 March, the 5-piece band will be playing at Matakana Country Park to farewell the summer, before heading back into the studio to record throughout autumn. The band has come a long way since they won Best New Act in 2000, and over the years they’ve consistently won awards and accolades with their unique blend of live drum and bass, dub, soul and liquid funk. It’s going to be quite a show, as Shapeshifter will be joined by hip hop and soul queen Ladi6, reggae/rock/roots band Kora, DJ collective Sunshine Sound System, along with LA-based producer and DJ Mr Carmack. Shapeshifter’s synth, guitar and sample master Sam Trevethick took time out to answer a few of our questions. What can people expect from this show?

OF
SHAPESHIFTER
A diverse yet complementary line up of out-ofthe-box and heartfelt music. You started out in Christchurch in 1999, so that means you’ve been together for almost 20 years. What’s your tip for a healthy long-term relationship? Making sure the beer is the correct temperature. That and communication. Tiki Taane is often spotted behind the sound desk, will he be joining you here in Matakana? Tiki has played nearly every show with us since our inception, with the exception of a small handful. He's part of the band and deserves a lot of credit for what we have managed to achieve as a group. He's an inspiration on and off 'the park'. Huge for morale, inspiration and motivation.
You’re touring with Kora and Ladi6, who have also featured on some of your albums. Do you guys get up to any mischief together? Never. That’s a lie... when do we not get up to mischief?! Your last album Stars was released in 2016. Are there any plans for a new album? We are planning a new album and series of EPs for release this year. Any plans to make the most of our beaches while you're here? Any favourite spots? Well.... Matheson Bay is hard to beat. I once surfed Daniel's Reef with Judge Dredd so that will be hard to beat. March is shaping up to be another great month of alternative Kiwi music at the Sawmill. On 3 March, Indie folk singer-songwriter Mel Parsons will play songs influenced by the likes of Cat Stevens, Tracey Chapman, Neil Young, Sinéad O’Conner and Bob Dylan. After travelling the globe, Parsons returned to New Zealand in 2007 to start recording her first album. Together with producer Shaun Elley she released Over My Shoulder in 2009 through her own label, Cape Road Recordings. Her music often echoes the landscapes of her life: Cape Foulwind on the West Coast of NZ, the Atacama Desert in Chile and the Rocky Mountains in Canada. In 2011 Mel released her second studio album, Red Grey Blue, with an allstar Kiwi musician guest list that included Anika Moa and Greg Johnson on harmonies, Bruce Lynch on double bass and Don McGlashan on baritone horn. Parsons followed that with her third album, Drylands, in 2015. Canadian pop/folk legend Ron Sexsmith agreed to feature on the duet Don’t Wait after Parsons sent him an email out of the blue. In 2016, Parsons received the NZ Music Awards prize for Best Country Song of the Year for Alberta Sun. She’s no stranger to the spotlight - she has also played at the Folk Alliance International in 2014, 2015 and 2017 – so this upcoming show should be a great one to catch. On 9 March, husband and wife duo Aro play at the Sawmill as part of their campground tour, bringing their alternative soul-pop songs, with pop band The Low Low as support. On 11 March, blues/folk artist Callum Gentleman plays a farewell show before heading to the US. He will be joined by seven-piece collaboration Mice on Stilts and alt-country Erny Belle (see Junction February issue for our Erny Belle interview). www.sawmillcafe.co.nz
