NEW NATURE HUB

NEW & NOTED

The Wildly Curious Nature Hub has just opened its doors at Charlie’s Gelato in Matakana. Owned and operated by Clara, an educator who has taught for several years in the UK and New Zealand. They offer a unique full day program where children experience exploring, learning, and creating whilst being outside. The sessions are both child and facilitator led. Being child-led, trained facilitators monitor the children, but encourage exploration and discovery and support them to take risks. The activities have been designed to develop selfesteem, imagination, and physical ability as the children are allowed to test their limits in the natural world. The Tuesday and Wednesday sessions are designed for our Little Foragers and cater for 3.5-7 years. Friday sessions are set to start in Term 2 and will be a One Day School for 5-11 years. Children in these sessions will spend time in the grounds of Charlie’s and also explore other outside locations going on adventures to the beach, on walks and to parks. www.wildlycurious.nz wildlycurious.nz@gmail.com

GETTING DOWN AND DIRTY RODNEY MOTORCYCLE CLUB 11km north of Warkworth, in the Dome Valley, is the home track of the Rodney Motorcycle Club. On any given Sunday, the smell of barbecuing bacon mixes with exhaust fumes as club enthusiasts turn up to race and socialise over a shared love of motocross. Club secretary, Ian Standring, estimates the club has been going for at least 50 years and currently boasts around 120 regular riders. Words Luke Williamson | Photos ClicknShoot Photography

Ian, "because anyone can come along and ride, and as soon as they sign up for an

event, they are automatically covered by our insurance and liabilities." Riders pay

on the day – $20 for minis and juniors and $30 for seniors.

Riders have their preferred conditions, and a maize paddock event always results in a

The biggest challenge for the club is finding land to race on. Ian explains, "Farmers are reluctant to let us tear up any productive

Everyone is welcome, and the club tries to ensure there’s plenty of variation in what’s offered. "The classes are based on ability," says Ian. "We run a mini-50cc and mini65cc class for riders aged five years and up. There’s the pro class which is all the capable, fast riders, and then a support class where you can run anything from a 125cc to 500cc machine. There’s a novice class for people who are confident on their bike but haven’t done much racing and want to get a feel for it. We also run an 85cc class and a 125cc class. Juniors can ride in those classes until they turn 16, joining the seniors. We cater for a women’s class, but the maximum we ever get is around ten participants. And last of all, we can run a Vet’s class for riders who are aged 45 and above." Training days are sometimes offered, or people can just get in touch with the club to find a safe way to introduce themselves to the joys of motocross. www.facebook.com/RmccMx

PADDLING FOR CHANGE Lockdowns affect people differently; some panic buy toilet paper, some bake bread, and some make life-changing decisions. Mark Collins and his partner Debbie fit into the latter category. Words Kate Moore

During one of many walks in the first lockdown, Mark and Debbie quickly realised that this is, potentially, what retirement looked like for them. While it wasn’t a bad outcome, they realised that they wanted more. Mark was, at the time, CEO for Mike Pero Group, and during a chance conversation with one of his managers, he discovered that Puhoi Kayaks was for sale. He immediately rang Debbie to discuss and set about doing due diligence – that afternoon, they signed on the dotted line. And just like that, Debbie and Mark became Puhoi Village's newest residents. Puhoi kayaks have been operating since 1995 and offer a self-guided tour, allowing

you to meander the river at your own pace, completing the tour at Wenderholm. Since 2020 when Collins took over the business, an additional 15 double kayaks were purchased, and they have recently completed the most significant January in the company’s history. Mark sees Puhoi Kayaks as an integral part of the community and has huge plans for the family-run business, including offering midweek packages to schools and companies for team-building activities. Moving to Puhoi has allowed Mark and Debbie not only to create a family business, that Mark is hopeful the children will take over one day, but it also allowed Mark to follow a dream of working in the not-for-

profit industry. At the beginning of 2022, he became CEO of ChildFund New Zealand. ChildFund New Zealand was established in 1990, and for over 30 years, the charity has been helping children and youth thrive in communities impacted by poverty. Using the support offered by more than 13,000 Kiwis, New Zealand’s ChildFund uses a unique Road Map developed by ChildFund global. This Road Map allows communities to create goals and, therefore, enables them to drive their development and define true sustainability. ChildFund New Zealand funds these dedicated programmes in Kenya, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, and

Zambia. Mark says, “As a parent, I truly understand the privilege and responsibility of having children. I recognise that they have a unique opportunity to change the world in ways that those of us now, as fully grown adults, do not. They can teach us about the world we have created and help us see things with a fresh perspective. With ChildFund, I have found an opportunity to help those children who are born into poverty and deprivation through no fault of their own. For me, this is a true privilege, and I am fortunate to have that chance. Making an impact gets me out of bed in the morning.” Mark is looking forward to working with his incredibly knowledgeable team and using his considerable skills to grow revenue streams, build brand awareness and tell the ChildFund story the best he can. www.puhoikayaks.co.nz www.childfund.org.nz

THE DEAD FLOWER LADY When Antonia De Vere first moved to Leigh, two years ago, an elderly neighbour used to call her ‘The Dead Flower Lady,’ which Antonia adored. Words Kate Moore

Antonia refers to herself as a “Frankenstein florist” as her completed art comprises many different parts, foraged, and dried over time. Then each bit fitted together with a lot of patience. The end creation is uniquely beautiful and rivals what Mother Nature first produced. Ikebana is a refined Japanese art of flower arranging – with space and elegance as necessary as each flower and leaf, they all work together to create a whole. Antonia painstakingly deconstructs flowers and leaves and then uses a glue gun to stick

them onto branches and twigs to modify what nature originally produced. Antonia also enjoys using unexpected materials on her creations and, in the past, has added paint, cashmere, rose quartz, and pearls to her designs. Each stem can take multiple hours to complete, but the final piece will stand proud either singularly or in a bunch. Choosing the path of dried flowers as opposed to its fresh counterparts is attributed to the fact that there is so much waste in the floral market “so many blooms are binned

after a single wedding day, I wanted to find a way to reduce this wastage.” A decade later, this path has proven itself correct time and time again. Antonia’s mum plays a big part in the amount of foliage Antonia has available – so much so that Antonia states her favourite place to forage is Christchurch – which is where her mum lives. There is rarely a day that passes that she doesn’t receive a phone call asking her if she needs something that her mum has spotted on the side of the road. Her mum is also responsible

for growing much required other flora, such as the lavender, the main ingredient of the ‘Lavender Explosion Scented dried.’ These jars of dried flowers cannot be compared to your grandma’s potpourri, which has sat in the same container for ten years and smells just as bad it looks! These jars of beauty are created to sit proudly on a shelf and be admired. As “scent and flowers go hand in hand,” it was only a matter of time before Antonia delved into her background of aromatherapy and produced candles to accompany her arrangements. Each scent is thoughtfully put together to evoke seasonal memories – such as the Winter Scent, which Antonia created especially for her wedding. Forever Flowers is Antonia’s latest baby to add to her vast repertoire. Her book was released just before Christmas in 2021. The book, which Antonia wrote herself, shows how to create some of the forever pieces. After following the photographic instructions, Antonia is delighted when people send her videos and photos of their creations. www.markantonia.com

ENRICHING THE COMMUNITY When you’re next passing Waihoihoi River Park in Waipu, take a moment to watch the young skaters enjoy the new skatepark, which opened just before Christmas 2021. Just over one year in the making, it is the design handiwork of Matt Woodside and Richard Smith of RICH Landscapes and is the culmination of a nearly 20-year dream for some in the community. Words Luke Williamson | Photos Rory Gatfield, Eightythreephoto

The skatepark functions at a nice local scale says designer, Matt Woodside. "It’s not too big or too busy, so it’s easy to find your feet, and it caters for a broad cross-section of ages. Once you get confident there, you can head to a big park-like Mangawhai." Richard did the original concept design and consultation and got that approved by Council. Then Matt worked on the

construction drawings and site management, Steve Bowling Contractors carried out the build. RICH Landscapes has designed over 100 skateparks (over 75 built), most of which are in New Zealand. "Our conversations with the community inform our designs, and we aim to give them what they want...with a bit on top to make it special and unique. Give it

that wow factor," says Matt. As a result, all the park designs on the RICH Landscapes website are different, and they encapsulate the philosophy of each community having unique needs, budgets, and environments. The feedback from the Waipu community was for a general mix of features, not too big and something everyone could use. Matt says, "This sort of park works well for kids aged five

through to 14-15 because they can get there every day. This is where they really hone their skills before trying out a bigger park." With so many parks completed, and more in the pipeline, I asked Matt what makes RICH Landscapes the go-to company for skatepark design. "Richard has an excellent eye and a lot of experience with skateboarding. He keeps getting quality parks built, which leads to further recommendations." I asked Matt to explain the features of a good skatepark. "A nice configuration of elements, good flow, and high-quality construction. Poor-quality finishing can really let a park down. It should also cater to different ages and skill levels, so advanced skaters are not colliding with beginners. We can do that through good design." For the Waipu skatepark, a big challenge was monitoring the build remotely because of the Covid lockdown. Matt says, "We did it by Zoom from the site with a Council coordinator holding her phone up to various aspects of the build so we could check we were satisfied. It wasn’t ideal, but we’re really happy with the end result." www.richlandscapes.co.nz www.eightythreephoto.com

Harcourts Foundation

HARCOURTS AND OUR COMMUNITY.

Did you know that roughly 1% of our Harcourts commission goes back into the community via our Harcourts Foundation grant programme? The Harcourts Foundation operates as a 100% charity and is funded through Harcourts employee salary sacrifice, ‘off the top’ contributions from sales commissions, and through organised fundraisers. For many years we have supported many local groups through the Foundation like: Matakana School, Omaha Surf Club, Matakana Tennis Club, Snells Beach Residents and Ratepayers, Highfields Donkey Reserve, Harbour Hospice, North Rodney Blue Light and many more.

Key community issues such as early childhood education, homelessness, domestic violence, hospice care, and healthcare amongst many others, are being tackled head-on with the support of Harcourts team members’ generosity. “The Harcourts Foundation is making a difference to those that need it most,” said our Harcourts Executive Director Mike Green. “It’s during times like a global pandemic where our world needs this kind of support more than ever.”

The Harcourts Foundation has recently reached the milestone of $7 million raised it set since they launched in 2008. That translates to 1078 charities supported, 356 communities impacted, and over 970 grants made through Harcourts offices in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the USA.

Being caring members of the local communities ensures a better quality of life for everyone. It is through the success of our businesses that we provide much-needed support to the communities we live and work in.

WHALE TALES 2022

PRODULY SUPPORTING WARKWORTH SCHOOL Harcourts NZ are proud to present Whale Tales 2022. A pod of uniquely designed and painted Whale Tail Scupltures have immersed themselves into Tāmaki Makaurau – forming a free, family-friendly public art trail for all to enjoy from 24th January – 18th April 2022. This Trail features 80 Big Broos (large tail sculptures) painted by talented New Zealand artists and 80 Pēpi (mini Tail Sculp-tures) painted by our talented Tāmariki. Inspired by the en-dangered Bryde’s whale – these sculptures will illustrate the “Tales” of our moana and how we all have a part to play in protecting and restoring the mauri of our ocean. We proudly presented Warkworth School with their pēpi tale earlier this month and are looking forward to seeing what our young tāmariki create. These mini tales will be displayed in our local offices from 14th March for the remainder of the trail. The large sculptures will be auctioned off to raise significant funds to power the vital work WWF – New Zealand does to look after our ocean and her marine life throughout Aotearoa, particularly in and around our local Hauraki Gulf.

MEXICAN CULTURE ARRIVES IN MATAKANA Adriana was born and raised in Mexico, surrounded by colour, music, passion, and the inherent desire to celebrate all that life offers. She relocated to New Zealand six years ago and now calls Matakana home.

With a background in experimental graphic design, Adriana's journey through the field of visual arts has been an eclectic and broad one. She has worked across many disciplines, including multi-media formats, static and moving, illustration, graphic design, visuals for live shows, interactive and high-end visual effects for film and television. For over 18 years, she has been

developing an eye for the arts and possesses excellent attention to detail. Visual arts are her passion, and it is with this passion that she now introduces Cocolvu to New Zealand. Cocolvu is an explosion of colour and design, ranging from prints and home decor to larger canvases like the walls of restaurants and shops, bringing Mexican culture, flair, and

folklore right to your doorstep. It is with Encapsulated, a series of four prints, that the brand has made its first appearance in the art scene; however, this is only the beginning, and with an exchange with local talent, don’t be surprised to find Cocolvu as part of your home decor soon. BEER BRANDING This region is spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a great drop. But how do our favourite breweries translate their taste to their branding.

8 WIRED BREWERY 8 Wired Brewery offers up quality beers and consistently uses its branding to express each beer in a different light. They offer the consumer a glimpse of what they can expect on their taste buds using unique colours, graphics and fun names. The black, simple central logo of a skewed barbed wire circle invokes a classic kiwi feel and can be used on every facet of branding - complimenting the rainbow of background colours. The multi-coloured branding ensures that this winning beer stands out on the shelves and offers a visual feast before the top is popped. www.8wired.co.nz | Designer: Simon Courtney (Deflux Design)

BOHEMIAN CIDER Each can of Bohemian Cider offers a visual taste before you open the can. The vibrant colours and patterns that adorn the vessels were created as a one-off design from a visiting friend from Sweden who is a tattoo artist. After he digitally sketched up the design, his partner, an artist, added the background colours. What has resulted is branding representing the Bohemian philosophy – beautiful but quirky and a bit alternative. “Each product has different colours and patterns that reflect the Cider’s flavour. For example, our Tamarillo Amarillo has red and orange from the Tamarillos surrounded by a green hop flower mandala.” www.bohemiancider.co.nz

PUHOI BEER Puhoi Beer is the new kid on the block, but the subtle and classic branding proves that there is beauty in simplicity. Using clever and bold monochrome branding, this beer is exactly what the tin states- A Nice Cold Pilsner. Their take on the classic Czech pilsner that was first created and enjoyed by the original Bohemian settlers of Puhoi. The classic eye-catching branding extends to the white ‘weatherboard’ style signage, which pays homage to the iconic weatherboard structures that make up Puhoi village. In keeping with the straight-up branding, they also have genius pint glasses, which remind you when to order another. www.puhoibeer.co.nz/

SAWMILL BREWERY Sawmill Brewery’s strong sense of independence and willingness to do things differently is ensured from the first hold. Each bottle features hand-painted artwork and incorporates its logo into a version of the Southern Cross. This eye-catching yet straightforward branding is consistent with their hands-on approach to brewing. The result is pared back and crafted without the use of gimmicks. It also reminds the consumer that quality ingredients are used; the hops and the malts are world-class and grown in Aotearoa. The result is a straight-up brew that is no fuss, easy on the eye, and easy to drink. www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz

THE BRAND OF KINDNESS Anneke Jochem has always been a creator. From a very young age, she had an interest in all fabrics. This naturally led to a career in fashion and ultimately to Anneke becoming the visionary behind EB+FLO. A New Zealand-made organic lifestyle brand that is paving the way for conscious consumerism. After completing an Arts degree at AUT, fresh-faced and enthusiastic, Anneke went into the fashion industry with aspirations to be a Buyer. Her first job was working with Orca. She then went on to work for the likes of Farmers, Principals, and RJC, gaining experience both within the NZ manufacturing market and importing. Her frequent trips offshore to factories and garment sourcing opened her eyes to the

impact fast fashion has had globally on people and the environment. A career change took her into wholesaling for a time. Her major retail customers then established direct factory relationships, taking a large part of their business with them. Then, feeling a bit jaded with the dog-eat-dog nature of the business, Anneke chose to leave the industry. A couple of kids and a few years later, Anneke was drawn back to her first love. EB+FLO-Mindful Active Lifestyle - naturally evolved after brainstorming what the future of fashion could be - coming full circle, back

where the industry used to be. Back when garments were made locally, with quality fabrics that stood the test of time.

If they were going to do it, it had to be done

right! Authentically focusing on quality, being kind to people and the planet. Having a zerowaste ethos and full product transparency, investing in organic natural Merino Cotton, and sustainable bamboo blends.

EB+FLO's design process naturally evolves too. Taking a practical approach, from the

origin of your garment, fabric suitability, and fit to its end-use. Design elements are then added for a point of difference.

They've started with a muted colour palette but plan to expand this once the brand grows. The philosophy will still remain - to create a range of quality, basic core garments that become staples of your wardrobe. The garments' sports, athleisure, surfie appeal creates an all-round lifestyle brand, which is both smart/casual for everyday wear but allows for the functionality of going from office to gym. Being made from natural fibres, garments are not only kind to the planet; from production through to end-use, wearers will also benefit from breathability of the fabric and lack of allergens. Saying goodbye to the synthetic smell of traditional activewear. In essence, EB+FLO is proud to be out on their own, doing what they do. Sticking with the brand philosophies. Keeping it real - as they say. Both in the garments and everything they do. You can find them on their website or social pages or at the Mangawhai Tavern Markets. www.ebflo.co.nz www.Instagram.com/ebplusflo

What our clients have to say about us Right from the start Jodene and Matt arrived at my house positive and ready to go. My biggest impression was that they brought their gumboots as it was a rural property and walked the entire property with me asking all the relevant questions. I felt like they really got to know what they were selling, as being a small acreage there is a lot more to the property than just a house.

BIGGER IS NOT BETTER When it seems everyone else in the world is constantly upsizing, Sam Wilson and Paige Garner are redefining house building by focusing on what is truly important. The end result is a dwelling that will rival any vast mansion. Words Kate Moore | Photos Dominey Flores

While renting a large 600 square metre plus house in Riverhead, the duo quickly realised that “bigger is not better,” Paige stated that the motivation to keep the house and wash up to date was lost rapidly. The decision to build was a straightforward one. Sam has had over a decade of running his own company, ‘Wilco builders’, and years of experience working locally and internationally – including on David Beckham’s house! The motivation behind the build was simple – to construct a quality house that would provide everything a young family needs and include a few artistic features. While at the same time saving as many pennies as possible to ensure that all the wants could become realities. Sam and Paige worked closely with architect Dylan French from French Architecture to develop

a base plan. After confirming that they were all on the same page, they left French to add a few architectural flairs. And in eight short months later, the finished product is a dropdead gorgeous abode that, while seemingly simple, is complete with jaw-dropping details to make it stand out from the pack. The entire house is a rectangle of 175 square metres, but thanks to the thoughtful layout and awe-inspiring ceiling heights – 3.6 metres at its peak – the space feels more significant. The light streams through the skylights above into the open kitchen, living, and dining area, creating Paige’s favourite spot. The oversized double ranch sliders flow through to the deck outside – which is Sam’s favourite space and one that is used regularly. The soft colour scheme used throughout conjures up laid-

back coastal vibes, which echoes the many Pinterest pages that the duo explored in their venture to create the perfect family home. Though small, storage has not been forsaken and is cleverly hidden, such as the garage door, which melts into the house’s whiteboard and batten exterior, or the pull-down staircase that reveals 25 square metres of extra space above it. There is also the bespoke feature of the curved inbuilt shelves in the living room. Paige had to convince Sam and her father that this feature was required, as her dad said they “reminded him of a pizza oven and all those archways houses in the 1970s favoured”. Family touches resonate throughout; Together, Paige's dad, and Sam built the dwelling (mainly during their weekends). Her sister’s artwork adorns the walls, and décor from

THAI BEEF SALAD This Thai beef salad is very much medicinal food. It’s jam-packed with many fresh medicinal herbs that are good for you, from aiding digestion, detoxification to reducing your cholesterol level.

It’s served at room temperature rather than chilled. It’s quick to throw together once you have cooked the meat. You can cook the meat the day before and keep the steak in the fridge. STEP 1: Marinate the steaks • 3 sirloin steaks • 1 tbsp Bragg soy sauce • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper • •

1 tsp grated ginger 2 tbsp olive oil

Mix the marinade ingredients together. Pour the marinade over the steak, let it marinate for at least 2 hours. STEP 2: Cook the steak on a sizzling hot grill to medium-rare. Cook the fat part first for a couple of minutes, then cook 2-3 minutes on each side. STEP 3: Thinly slice the steak, discard the fat. STEP 4: Combine the below ingredients and taste for seasoning.

Cooked sirloin steak (sliced thinly) • 1-2 tbsp lime juice • 1 tbsp fish sauce • 2 lemongrass stalks, finely sliced • 5 Asian shallots, finely sliced • 6 kaffir lime leaves, very finely sliced • 3 spring onions, finely chopped • 8 roasted dried chillies (grind 2-3 chillies to powder, use the rest whole for garnish) • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • •

A handful of chopped coriander

A handful of mint chopped leaves; keep some for garnish

STEP 5: Put the salad mixture on the plate and spoon the seasoned steak over the salad, garnish with mint and whole roasted chilies. Serve the salad with coconut rice, jasmine rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice.

GUT GOODNESS Combining innovation, passion, sustainability, and deliciousness, Amber Rose and Kaz Staples are paving the way for fermentation and live-cultured, probiotic-rich products and bringing them to the mainstream market. Words Olivia Freestone

Amber, Kaz, and the Wild Delicious team are on a mission to spark conversation around the importance of gut health and how it can truly change people’s lives and transform how they feel. Wild Delicious has created a range of innovative and wild fermented, live-cultured, naturally sparkling water kefir, gut shots, botanical shrubs, krauts, and kimchi. Each product is packed with billions of broadspectrum probiotic goodness to reset and support your gut health. Wild Delicious are creating the cleanest, highest quality products to support the microbiome, which in turn boosts immune function, balances hormones, and supports the gut-brain axis, mental health, and brain function. The dream began when Amber Rose had a strong passion and a vision to bring fermentation and its magic to the Matakana Markets after experiencing huge benefits from using them herself. GEORGIEATS’ FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEMS Hi, I’m Georgie, legal assistant by day, passionate foodie, and blogger by night. My parents live in Matakana, so I visit whenever possible, checking out the local eateries and sharing reviews about them on my website and Instagram. Here are eight of my favourite hidden gems around the area: Words Georgie Bayly | www.georgieats.com

RAVISH

THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER

My favourite local hidden gem is Ravish in Matakana. This coffee kiosk serves excellent Supreme coffee, tasty home-baked goodies (try the doughnuts with fresh cream and jam!), salad boxes, rolls, and savouries. The staff are super friendly too. I highly recommend heading around the back to their rustic courtyard to relax and enjoy your coffee if you have time.

Imagine sitting outside on a relaxing summer evening, looking out to the Omaha Estuary and bountiful vegetable gardens – a perfect dinner setting. We recently enjoyed their Seafood Platter, full of fresh and delicately presented seafood like Te Makutu Bay oysters, salmon, clams, and a beautiful smoked fish pâté. Washed down with a local Sawmill pilsner, it was a night to remember.

RINGAWERA BAKER

THE GLASS HOUSE AT BRICK BAY

BAM’S BAKERY

From the moment you walk into Ringawera to the moment you step out, I can guarantee all your carb-filled dreams will come true. Freshly baked breads made from scratch and using quality ingredients. There is something for everyone, from sourdough, ciabatta, and focaccia, to pastries, croissants, and brioche, plus generously filled sandwiches to go. Not to mention some of the best hot cross buns at Easter.

Overlooking a lake filled with water lilies, The Glass House is one of my favourite lunch spots. Share one of their Platters, which features ingredients from Brick Bay’s gardens and locally sourced produce. Think beetroot cured salmon, fennel seed salami, and feta stuffed peppadews… a dreamy platter for a foodie! Enjoy a wine-tasting paddle, then head outside to explore their Sculpture Trail, which features over 60 artworks set amongst native bush and fields.

Located in an unassuming building in the centre of Warkworth, you will find Bam’s Bakery. A true hidden gem, owner Bam makes some of the best doughnuts I have ever had (pictured). The secret? Cinnamon sugar. Plain, sprinkled, filled, or fresh cream and jam on Saturdays. She also makes custom cakes to order, cupcakes, and other sweet delights daily.

8 WIRED BARRELWORKS MATAKANA OYSTERS Head to Matakana Oysters for some of the juiciest and plumpest oysters fresh from the Mahurangi Harbour. My go-to order is an extralarge dozen for $25… a bargain! You can either get takeaway or eat outside (take advantage of the myriad of sauces) or have them put on ice if your journey is a longer one… although they may be gone by the time you arrive!

During Level 3 lockdown, we supported 8 Wired Barrelworks on a few occasions, enjoying their Buffalo Chicken Burger, Classic Burger, Fries, and Mac and Cheese. These (alongside other delicious morsels) are now permanently on their menu, plus I highly recommend their beer-tasting paddle – your choice of five delicious beers. My top pick is Hop Salad. Special mention to Nora and her wicked sense of humour!

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALING When most people have an illness or ailment, they go straight to the pharmacy in search of treatment; for ACC accredited Rongoā Māori Practitioner Keeley Hetherington, she can find everything she needs in her own backyard. Words Leah Botherway

Upon finding her Whakapapa five years ago, Keeley transitioned from 33 years of Native American Indian to Māori beliefs. She founded her clinic on her property in Mangawhai, Trails End Rongoā Māori Healing. Keeley also works with Active Northland and Ringa Atawhai Mātauranga, providing her services to patients between Kaikohe and Warkworth. Rongoā is a traditional form of healing that Māori has relied upon since the early 19th century. Using a combination of Rongoā

WELLNESS

Rākau (native herbal remedies), mirimiri (physical therapies such as massage), and Karakia (spiritual healing or prayer), patients are treated by first understanding the events that led to ill health and addressing all aspects, including spiritual, psychological, cultural, environmental and physical health. Using only natural ingredients found in the Ngahere (native bush) on her father’s 166acre property in Mangawhai, Keeley creates panipani (balms) from scratch using raw beeswax and plants such as harakeke (flax), kawakawa, Kowhai, and manuka. Each plant has its own purpose and can be used to treat anything from fractures and wounds to sore throats. These native plant-based remedies are an integral part of Rongoā treatment, and the method of harvesting and making them is incredibly important. For Māori, Rongoā is a part of the Māori culture from Tāne (God of the forest) and, in order to practice this, a practitioner must become a part of the world of Tāne. This means becoming connected

and immersed in the forest beyond the physical elements of the trees and plants. Appropriate Tikanga (customs and rites) must be observed during the collection, preparation, and storage of Rongoā. When harvesting ingredients for her panipani, Keeley is guided by Tangata Kua Pahemo (people that have passed) and says a Karakia as she enters the Ngahere. Rongoā is now an ACC-approved treatment, and Ringa Atawhai Matauranga also offers a range of free Rongoā Maori Services such as Karakia and Mirimiri. With more people opening their eyes and minds to a more holistic approach to their health, Keeley has never been busier. “As kaitiaki (caretakers), we have an obligation to care for mother nature, as humans are part of the natural world, not presiders over it.” www.facebook.com/ groups/1032887590069298/

LAEL READ POTTERY CO From an early age, Lael Read was taught the craft of pottery from the skilled hands of her Nana. A self-taught potter, Lael's Nana created everything from cookware to ornaments on a kick wheel and had a big old 3 phase kiln while also mixing her own glaze. These treasured pieces are still staples in Lael's kitchen and her current inspiration.

It was not until 2019 that Lael decided to pick up the clay once again when she spotted an ad on Facebook for a one-day hand-building class. That one-day class soon turned into an eight-week hand-building class and, from there, multiple wheel throwing classes. While spending her free time at the Clay Center in Auckland and absorbing as much information as possible, Lael realised this was more than just a hobby. With her recent move from Auckland to Mangawhai, Lael was determined to make her dream a reality, purchasing a kiln and spending weekends and evenings creating inventory. From there, a logo was designed, an Instagram page created, and her first stall at the Mangawhai Tavern market. The next step is creating a website to sell her items directly to customers. "My love of pottery comes from my Nana, from being creative, making something from a ball of mud to a beautiful bowl or cup you use every day. I love to cook as well, so

making delicious food then plating it on something I made just can’t be beaten. A general expression of me, unwinding, relaxing, learning", reflects Lael. Ranging from beautiful bowls, planters, cups, and jugs, Lael's pieces show the quality and love she puts into each item. With warm and neutral colours, she has created a line that reflects her life, love of Mangawhai, the ocean and a reflection of the colours her Nana used. Currently a sales rep for a popular wine distributor, Lael hopes to turn her passion for pottery into her full-time work and is excited about the possibilities ahead. For more information on Lael Read Pottery Co or to purchase items, you can visit her Instagram page at Lael Read Pottery Co. You can also visit her at the Mangawhai Market on 16 April, Easter weekend. www.instagram.com/laelreadpotteryco lael.read@gmail.com

A SHIVER OF WETAS When Kenmore Auton was growing up, his mother was petrified about Wetas, and she passed this fear to each of her children. Fast forward to today's world, and Auton now has eight different Weta species hailing as his best-selling sculptures. These creations are so lifelike that they make people gasp when they see them. One of Auton's customers placed one in his downstairs toilet to terrify his guests! Words Kate Moore

Auton resides in Mangawhai on a 5-hectare bush-clad property with his wife Carol, an assortment of animals, and a Weta Cave, a treasure trove of various bronze body parts hidden away in numerous drawers and cabinets. Auton started his career as a manufacturing jeweller in Auckland and London throughout the 70s and 80s. After becoming bored with that scene, he started using his tightly honed skills to create high-end bone carvings, including many of his jewellery-based materials such as gold, silver, and precious stones. He then turned his focus to bronze sculptures in the early 1990s producing dolphins, whales, and seals. On a suggestion from Carol, he then extended his range to native wildlife, focusing on our iconic Wetas and the tuatara - both objects have captivated customers ever since. The native fauna creations are interrupted by various dragons and other assorted sculptures. One of these includes a stunning detailed Dragon cuff created for Carol 20 odd years ago, which now has pride of place on a shelf. Kenmore recalls a dinner party where a guest arrived with a grocery bag full of jewellery and poured its contents on the

42

ART

table, and requested that Kenmore create a twin dragon cuff for her. Auton's favourite piece is currently the Giant Pacific Octopus, which takes around 300 hours to create. Each Octopus is built from multiple parts made of bronze. Once assembled, it perches on a recycled totara fence post with rusted barbed wire completing the base. Auton's sculptures have flown worldwide, with an Octopus ending up recently in Geneva. There is a rule in the Auton household that the first creation must be retained, which has resulted in a Weta wall. Showcasing each of the options available; a male and female cave Weta, the male and female tree Weta, the female West Coast tree, the male and female giant Weta, and the new male Mercury Island tusked Weta. A New Zealand Entomologist verifies each piece to confirm that every body part is accurate. If it is not, it is adapted and modified until it is correct. Kenmore Auton's work is on show at various galleries throughout New Zealand. Please check out his website to enquire where you can view and be amazed. www.thewetaman.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR March will see another changing of the guard as far as the seasons go. The summer heat is waning, but soil temperatures will still be high, and soil moisture is still likely to be low. Add water to give your autumn/winter crops a chance to grow quickly before the later slowdown. 21 March is the equinox when the day and night are equal. Some of your plants may notice this important event more than you do. Words Geoff Ledbrook

GREEN MANURE Autumn is a great time to get green manure crops established. These crops are often referred to as cover crops, but they do a lot more than cover your garden space. Green manure crops help build or maintain carbon, minerals, and humus in the soil. Above ground, many of these crops provide valuable environments for beneficial insects. Equally as important, they do the same for the beneficial fungi and bacteria that live in your soil below ground. This microbial network is a major unseen part of your garden. You can help it thrive and increase your garden’s performance. An excellent green manure crop will keep the soil aerated and improve the soil’s physical structure. Vigorous, strong-rooted plants like lupins will help with the aeration of the soil instead of soil left bare, which tends to compact or leave it prone to erosion from heavy rain. Green manure crops you could consider for your garden come from a diverse range of

plant species. Some of these, like lupins, are nitrogen fixers. Like daikon radish and mustard, some can help reduce harmful microbes in the soil. However, all of them provide valuable carbon. Common species suitable for green manure include lupins, tic beans, broad beans, red clover, vetch, buckwheat, oats, wheat, phacelia, mustard, and daikon radish. Lupins are easy to grow, and are cold tolerant nitrogen fixers. Phacelia is also easy to grow and likewise germinates well at colder temperatures. It is a valuable plant for beneficial insects. Mustard is an easy crop to establish and great for your soil after potatoes or tomatoes. Don’t plant it after brassica crops, though. Buckwheat is a valuable spring, summer to early autumn cover crop. It is frost sensitive but can be sown after any garden crop with a quick-growing time. It is also a great plant for beneficial insects, so a winner all round. Bulk packs of these seeds or mixes are readily

available from garden centres or mail-order seed suppliers. To establish a green manure crop, broadcast your seed onto bare ground, preferably just dug or raked over. Depending on rainfall levels, they may need some watering to get an even good establishment, particularly in early autumn. Seeds like lupins need very little help to establish and are an easy option. Oat or wheat is suitable for autumn sowing and growing well but slightly disadvantageous of being very attractive to birds. You may well lose much of the seed you sow unless you net the area. The optimum time to utilise a green manure crop is at or before flowering and before it makes seeds. You can cut or mow down the plants and leave the stubble for digging in later when you get ready to plant. The traditional method is to pull up the plants and bury them in a shallow trench across the garden. Then leave the area fallow for four to six weeks to break down into the soil. Either way, the important thing is to put the organic matter back into the soil and let it break down.

the larvae are inside, it is too late. However, a natural product, Neem oil, is not selective and will, unfortunately, kill all insects that come in contact with it. Garden hygiene is probably the best tool you have to control the guava moth. Keep the area under the tree as clean as possible. Pick up all fruit that drops and dispose of it. We use a big barrel with water in it. Put all fruit you pick up in the barrel and keep the lid on to ensure the lifecycle is broken. Putting the fruit in your compost is not an option. The larvae in the infected fruit will still turn into grubs, pupate and produce the next generation of moths. Chickens foraging around your fruit trees will also help kill the grubs as they pupate in the soil under the trees.

GUAVA MOTH The guava moth is a pest you may well have in your fruit trees. It is a small moth that lays its eggs on a wide range of fruit and nuts. The range of fruit infected includes feijoas, cherry guavas, citrus, pip fruit, stone fruit, and macadamias. The moths lay their eggs on the surface of the fruit. The larvae hatch and burrow into the fruit causing early fruit drop and internal damage to the fruit. A wide range of host fruit allows the moth to be active all year round. The fruit on the trees is susceptible to larvae infestation from when fruit starts to form. From this point on, you can use a pheromone trap to monitor the levels of moths. More than five moths a fortnight in your trap means you have a problem. At this point, you can spray with Neem oil once or twice a week to reduce the infestation, but it will only stop the moths and larvae on the surface of the fruit. Once

Much of the damaged fruit can still be used as a home gardener. The infected portion can be cut out and disposed of safely. The remaining fruit can be used for jam, juicing, chutneys, or dehydrating. Last season guava moth in feijoas resulted in us experimenting with dehydrating to use all the damaged fruit. The dehydrated fruit is easy to store and was great in baking and mueslis. Some even went in the Christmas cake!

THE ART OF PERFUMERY Scent reaches us in a way that is beyond sight and sound. Scent can be a direct link to memory and emotion.

Sarah's journey, experiences, and emotions have led her to perfumery. After a diagnosis and recovery from cancer, Sarah Dwyer discovered essential oils and their fragrance. These transported her to a hidden world and ignited a passion for learning the art of perfumery. This inspired travel to San Francisco and London to study with Mandy Aftel and Sarah McCartney in 2016, 2019 and to the Institute of Art and Olfaction.

“Eleve” embodies fresh green roses and soft woody elements of sandalwood.

The workshop will explore and evaluate a range of aromatic materials to create your own personal formula. Finally, you will compose and create a 10ml spray perfume presented in a French perfume bottle.

Fragrances are blended and bottled by hand using exquisite oils and absolutes imported from all over the world. Sarah has developed a range of products, including eau du parfum, solid parfum, and scented body crèmes.

Sarah also offers a unique opportunity to experience scent through an explorative three-hour workshop in her home. Sarah’s workshops are an awakening of the senses, to experience scent and your surroundings in a way you have never experienced before.

“Blossima” has fragrant notes of orange blossom, sparkling mandarin, grapefruit, and lemon. “Sari” is reminiscent of a still tropical evening and the intoxicating scent of jasmine and orange blossom. These beautiful and bespoke scents are available on her website.

Please see upcoming workshop dates on the website, and classes are also available on request. The workshops are a creative yet relaxing experience, individually or shared with a group or with friends. New perfumes will be released in 2022, and keep an eye out on their website for upcoming Mother’s Day gifts. info@sarahdwyerperfume.co.nz www.sarahdwyerperfume.co.nz

THE LEIGH PENGUIN PROJECT The Leigh coast has long been known as a little blue penguin (kororā) habitat. The town even has a Penguin Street due to penguins nesting under houses there. In 2018 Forest and Bird Warkworth Area members set up the Leigh Penguin Project to find out more about penguin numbers. Sightings are common at sea, but penguins are hard to monitor on land as they come ashore after dusk. Members built penguin nesting boxes then placed the boxes out around the Ti Point to Goat Island coastline. There are now more than 80 penguin nesting boxes that are checked regularly for signs of penguins. Several of these nesting boxes have had penguin visitors with some birds building nests inside. In addition, a dog trained in locating penguins identified over 20 possible natural nesting sites on the Leigh and Ti Point coast. Volunteers discovered other nesting sites by looking for signs and smells of penguins. Penguins begin nesting in June, and chicks usually fledge by the end of the year. However, during January, adults come ashore to moult and are vulnerable at this time as they cannot go out to sea to feed until moulting is complete. Currently, some are moulting underneath several houses at Leigh. Motion cameras have shown some amazing videos of penguins coming ashore, carrying nesting material, preening, and feeding their chicks. Traplines were set up to reduce predators such as rats, stoats, and weasels. Volunteers have placed over 200 predator traps along the coast, which are regularly checked. Trapping is making a huge difference not only for penguins but other native species as well. More than 1000 predators have been caught and recorded. Cameras have identified predators near penguin sites, and

extra traps have been added. Funding has been received from the Leigh Community Club, the Rodney Local Board, and the DoC Community Fund. In addition, Matakana ITM supplied materials for traps and nesting boxes. The Leigh Penguin group was a finalist in the Auckland Council Mayoral Conservation award in 2021. Next season, surveillance will be increased using night imaging gear and additional trail cameras to find more penguin sites. In addition, the data from Goat Island, Leigh coast, and Ti Point coast, will be

coordinated and give a better understanding of penguin numbers by the end of the 2022 nesting season. Sadly some penguins were found with injuries from uncontrolled dogs. However, these events are rare, and most local dog owners keep dogs under control around penguin nesting areas. Penguins, people, and pets have co-existed on the Leigh coast for years, and the penguin group hopes this will continue as more knowledge is shared with the community. leighpenguins@gmail.com enderbys@xtra.co.nz

EXPERT ADVICE

GLOWWORM PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS Charles Brooks has been photographing the glowworms at Waipu cave since 2016. Initially, he went there to test new cameras for Panasonic Lumix. However, the experience was so unique that he invited other photographers to learn alongside him. He now does this three or four times a year through his workshop company High Res Tours. These glowworm caves are a New Zealand wonder. Other countries have glowworms, but none in such large quantities. Standing in the caves is like looking up at some strange new galaxy. Charles sees many people enter the cave to visit the glowworms during his shoots. But few take the time to really appreciate their beauty. It takes your eyes a full 20 minutes to completely adjust to the darkness. Looking at any source of light in that time, such as a phone, or even the back of a camera, will quickly ruin your vision. But once your eyes have adjusted, you'll see the soft light that the glowworms cast on the rocks and extraordinary reflections in the river that runs through the cave. Photographing glowworms is remarkably tricky. Charles was an award-winning astrophotographer before trying his hand at glowworm photography. He initially thought the typical settings for space photography would work for glowworm shoots, but these caves are much darker than even the darkest night sky. There are parts of the cave that receive no light whatsoever.

The key here is patience. A typical glowworm photograph can take between eight and 30 minutes to expose, even with fast lenses. You need to cross your fingers that no one walks through with a torch during that time! At his workshops, Charles lends out specialist fast lenses and camera bodies to those that need them, or want to try something new, thanks to his sponsors Lumix and Samyang.

The following workshops will be on 11, 12, and 13 March. They are limited to just six people and run for about eight hours from sunset through to the early morning. After so many years photographing the caves, Charles was still so in love with the site that he photographed his own engagement shoot there! highrestours@gmail.com www.highrestours.com DISCOVER

SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE Interview with Claire MacDonald - Trainee on Spirit of New Zealand Voyage #831 Zonta Club of Mangawhai - www.facebook.com/zontaclubofmangawhai

Zonta seeks to empower women worldwide. In 2012 the Mangawhai chapter in NZ District 16 launched their inaugural Spirit of New Zealand Scholarship Award. They see the ten-day leadership development voyage on The Spirit of Adventure as a confidencebuilding opportunity for young women with leadership potential and an interest in developing leadership skills. Zonta fundraises for the award, promoting the opportunity in the local community and schools. There’s an application form, followed by an interview and reference checks for shortlisted candidates. It’s inevitably a difficult decision with so many worthy young

women, so in 2021 they made two awards available. We chat with Claire MacDonald - 2021 Spirit of New Zealand Scholarship Award winner.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

WHAT WAS INVOLVED IN YOUR 10 DAYS ON THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE?

I live in Mangawhai and attend St Cuthbert's College in Auckland and am working towards my International Baccalaureate Diploma. My interest in the ocean and everything to do with the marine environment is deeply rooted in my upbringing. I have participated in Junior Surf Lifesaving, Surf Sport, Competitive Pool, and Ocean Swimming since a young age. I have competed in surf

I went on voyage #831, and had amazing sunny weather as the ship sailed from Auckland to Motuihe Island, then up to the Tawharanui Peninsula, out to Great Barrier, and all-around Great Barrier, then down to the Coromandel before returning to Auckland on day 10. Each day onboard started with an early morning ocean swim. Learning new skills and all trainees contributing to the

sports with Mangawhai Heads VLS and Omaha SLSC. I have also been a lifeguard and IRB crew, and driver at both beaches.

ship’s various duties were key to each day. We learned how to put up sails, to drop and haul up anchor, to tie ship’s knots, and how to navigate. We helped with meal prep and cleaned up, we took turns at night watch, did tack and gybe practice, and climbed to the top of the ship’s rigging. We had raft paddling races, sailed dinghies, played group games and group challenges on deserted beaches, had night swims, and walked to the top of Mt. Hobson (the tallest peak on Great Barrier Island); among many other activities!

DESCRIBE YOUR MOST ENJOYABLE MOMENT There were so many enjoyable moments, but what comes to mind is sitting out on the bowsprit as we sailed the 60+ nautical miles from Tawharanui Peninsula out to Great Barrier Island. And almost every day, we sailed with dolphins nearby! One day, we were able to set all 14 of the ship’s sails, and then we all went out in a tender to look back at all our hard work! At night, the lack of light pollution allowed for amazing stargazing. Another highlight was jumping off the ship’s rope swing and doing flips off the side of the boat. I really enjoyed the friendships I made during my voyage, and everything about the experience was positive and enjoyable. I am

so grateful to have had the opportunity to go on this voyage.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE?

Attending university overseas, and hopefully, lots of travel. I cannot imagine myself ever living anywhere else but near the water or on the water, and I am hoping for a career that can make the most of my love of the ocean, the coastal and marine environment, and my love of boats!

There was so much to learn and do that the ten days passed very quickly! However, the friendships I made are lifelong, and the memories we made will forever be some of my happiest.

CREATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL DIARY Maureen Roke and Jo-ann Farnell are facilitating a Concertina Visual Diary Creation course for a small group of people, allowing individual tuition, at Studio 22 in Snells Beach on 10 and 11 March from 10am-3pm. A range of materials, including the blank diary, light lunch, and refreshments, will be provided. The cost is only $90 for the two days, thanks to assistance from the Auckland Council's, Creative NZ Communities. Sketchbooks can be a powerful creative tool that help to improve your confidence, find an artistic style and a way to express yourself. They are a springboard to a more fulfilled and colourful life. It is amazing to turn a blank page into something alive with meaning. They can also be a private place to have a creative conversation with yourself. It all unfolds page after page as the diaries contain 70 pages and are double-sided allowing great scope. There are no rules or right or wrong way of doing it. Just fun. Maureen and Jo-ann would like to encourage all comers to participate and develop an art practice. Being a visual diary, it can incorporate cultural diversity, e.g. tracing whakapapa, developing creativity mindfully by using recycled materials, and appreciating everyday waste. It can be a reflection on places visited and a recording of daily activities. The bounds are limitless. Both facilitators have a wide range of artistic skills to add diversity to this course. Maureen is a qualified adult tutor, having taught at Mahurangi Technical Institute and similar courses in London. She is well known for her sketching and exquisite watercolours. Jo-ann mainly works in mixed media producing innovative arts. Maureen 0274 740 001 Jo-ann 022 350 5706
