LOVE MY LOCALS THE DRIVEWAY SERIES Tanja Dove, a local Snells Beach Photographer, has been documenting people in their 'bubbles' and lockdown environment. While going on short walks in her neighbourhood, she has asked people she sees in their driveways if they’d like a group or ‘bubble’ photo. These images have captured family groups but also bubbles of overseas friends and family stranded in NZ. The images are a collection of memories of an unusual time for all of us, giving the people in the bubble photos a precious keepsake of this time and a little piece of NZ history. SEVEN ZEN – A VOICE FOR PEACE WORDS REBECKA BJELFVENSTAM
After the horrific events in Christchurch in 2019, local artist Seven Zen, also known as Kate Popham, felt compelled to express herself in the way she knows best – through her music. Her song ‘They Are Us’ made it to the finals of the 2019 Play it Strange Peace Song Competition and in March, Kate was invited to perform at the Auckland Museum as part of the Christchurch Memorial Peace Concert in the WWI Hall of Remembrance. “It was a commemoration of peace,” Kate says. “A bunch of New Zealanders playing beautiful songs so that, instead of looking back in sadness, we can look forward in hope. I was honoured to be included in that selection.” Kate is only 16 years old, but already a familiar face at the local music scene. From busking and participating in the open mic nights at Matakana Pub, to playing gigs at the Farmers' Market and taking on the big stage at Kowhai Festival. One of the things that captivates you when watching a Seven Zen gig, is how skilled Kate is with the looper – she layers different sounds one by one and loops them. “It takes a bit of practice, but I just learn as many instruments from the song as I can, play as many as possible, until there’s enough pieces that it will sound like a full song.” Kate began playing music when she was ten,

but it has also given Kate more time to work on music. “I’ve had time to record my ideas – including a song that I might enter into the 2020 Peace Song Competition.” The name Seven Zen comes from the seven principles of Buddhism, covering mindfulness, equality without need for comparison, not making money an aim in life, working towards meaningful fiddling around with her dad’s instruments. PLANT CARE TIPS - AERATE AND FLUSH WORDS
CORRINNA
HENDERSON
As our autumn days are getting shorter and cooler, now is a good time to treat your plant friends to some TLC. Aerate and flush It is important to periodically flush your indoor plants of the harmful salt, hard water deposits and other minerals which build up in the soil over time. A flush is helpful every two to six months, avoiding winter and cold temperatures. You can also flush following accidental over-fertilization to wash away excess nutrients before they damage the roots. So how do you flush a plant? 1. First, it’s important to aerate the soil to encourage air to reach the roots and water to evenly distribute (a job insects and worms do for plants in the wild). Use a chopstick or similar blunt item and gently pierce the surface of the soil a short distance away from the main vine - approx. 2cms or more deep. Then prod gently up the drainage holes of your pot to remove any blockages, compact soil, or roots and further aerate. 2. Now place your plant in a spot where water runoff won’t cause a problem e.g. in the shower, bath or outdoor area. Use tepid, quality water (rainwater is best), approximately four times the volume of the pot. Slowly pour the water all over the top of the soil, ensuring it is soaking through and out of the drainage holes, not overflowing over the sides. 3. When flushed, leave the plant to drain for at least a couple of hours and then place it back in its spot. It’s a good idea to place it on a drip tray for the next 24 hours to catch any excess water. If you think your plants could do with a flush, the sooner the better as the temperatures are dropping and light hours decreasing.

Trim / Prune and Clean Over spring and summer your plant babes will have hopefully seen a lot of action – e.g. repotting, fertilisation and hopefully a lot of new growth. So at this point when things are slowing down many will enjoy a trim, clean and tidy up. You can remove any unsightly dry or discoloured leaves, usually by just pulling them away from the base. You can also trim/prune any undesirable leggy or uneven growth using sharp and clean scissors. It’s also a good time to give your plants a clean. You can gently spray them in the shower using tepid water, or pop them out in the rain on a not too windy or cold day. I like to shower my smaller leaved plants like ferns and hoyas. For largerleaved beauties like strelitzia nicolai, fiddle leaf figs and rubber plants, you can wipe down both sides of the leaves to clean them. I like to use a damp microfiber cloth. I find it satisfying seeing the dust being removed and the leaves left shiny and clean! Remember, dust will block sunlight and reduce the plants ability to photosynthesize so regular cleaning is important. FEIJOA FIZZ This simple recipe uses discarded feijoa skins and turns them into a delicious, refreshing beverage. It has a low sugar content but tastes great. This is an easy entry into fermenting and if you continue on with other ferments, you will learn as you go along. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Once you have scooped out the feijoa flesh to use in your favourite feijoa recipe (or as we sometimes do - blend and freeze in ice cube trays, so they are free flow and can be used in porridge, baking, desserts and smoothies) give the skins a quick rinse. www.nurturenutrition.co.nz www.facebook.com/nurturenz Method: Loosely fill a 1 litre sized jar with feijoa skins. Add 1 TB of sugar and cover the feijoas with water to create an anaerobic environment. Leave loosely covered on the side for 2-3 days - if your feijoas go mouldy, you need to discard and try again. After that strain, and pop your feijoa skins into the compost. Add a further 1 TB of sugar and top up with water. If you seal it now it will get nice and bubbly! Leave for a further day then chill, drink and enjoy! The fermenting process removes some of the sugar as the sugar feeds the natural yeasts from the feijoa skins. Using a tightly sealed bottle will give better fizz results. The first ferment is unlikely to yield an alcohol content of more then 0.5% (some juices contain more than this) and the second ferment (anaerobic) would increase this somewhat which is why the sugar content is kept low and time short.
SAUNDARYA SPA HEALTH & BEAUTY
Please note that alcohol is a by-product of fermentation. This is not designed to be alcoholic and will not yield a strong alcoholic beverage but there will be some alcohol content (like with any ferment such as sourdough or sauerkraut). Do try any fermented beverage before giving it to children.

Did you know it isn’t about whether you love a piece of clothing? It’s about whether it loves you! True style, the seriously confident, ‘love-whatyou’re-in-style’, isn’t about wearing the latest trends or copying what someone else is wearing. True style comes from being comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. And by comfortable I don’t mean your favourite, worn out trackies (although there is definitely a place for these). What I mean is knowing yourself, your shape and then choosing items that showcase these features and make you feel your most confident. Actually arriving at this rather wonderful revelation can take us ladies (and gents) some time, and in the process we often end up with a bulging wardrobe, full of great looks we got for a bargain, some with tags still attached, many multiples of the same thing…and us standing in front of this rather large, dysfunctional mess puzzled by the fact that we have nothing at all to wear. Sound familiar? It may be time for a wardrobe restyle. Before you shut the wardrobe door and run for the nearest open bottle of pinot…relax. It’s not actually as tricky as you might think. Step One: You’re going to be doing some serious ‘try-ons! So get your best ‘ugly’ underwear on! The beige, sucky-in types which look far better with clothes over them than on their own. Step Two: Get three large boxes and label them 1. Donate. 2. Time Out. 3. Seasonal. Step Three: Arrange your wardrobe into categories (dresses, pants, tops, skirts etc) and hang all pants/ jeans/skirts on clippy hangers. Step Four: Try on three of your favourite outfits and take stock of how you feel! What is it about these outfits that make you feel so good? Colour, cut, style, fabric… take some photos of yourself and remember to smile. Step Five: Start with one category (dresses are a great place to start). Leave your favourites on

the rack pushed together. Now go through the remaining items and place them in one of your boxes: If you are unsure about something, try it on and see how you feel. If you don’t put it on and feel amazing straight away, you will not wear it! If you like it, but love another similar item more, you will not wear it! It’s far better off being loved by someone else. Donation: decide whether an item might suit a friend or if could be donated to an op-shop or a clothing charity. Time out: This box is where all your ‘I haven’t worn you in six months, but I’m not quite ready to let you go’ items go! If in a further six months, you haven’t missed it or wanted to wear it, it’s gone! Often these items are great to re-sell providing you with extra money to fill your wardrobe gaps. Season items: pack away items you are unlikely to wear during the current season. This frees up valuable space. Remember to use vacuum pack bags to minimise the storage space. RESILIENCY - THE ART AND SCIENCE OF BOUNCING BACK WORDS
FIONA
MCKAY
“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it” - Helen Keller. Few people get through life unscathed by grief, trauma or loss, yet some people appear to be able to bounce back more successfully than others and what’s more they flourish because of it, demonstrating what psychologists term ‘resilience’. While resiliency may appear to be a superpower held by a lucky few, over five decades of research indicates that anyone can learn and develop the necessary skills to become more resilient. The benefits of cultivating your own resiliency include: greater physical and mental wellbeing, improved academic achievement and a reduced risk of alcohol and drug abuse. Here are five research backed ways to boost your own superpower of resilience: Get Healthy. Getting physically active enhances feelings of wellbeing, boosts your immune system and has a positive impact on anxiety and depression. Ensuring you get a good night's sleep and eating a well balanced nourishing diet is also very important. And if you want to turbo boost your resilience and stress management skills start meditating. Get Connected. Research shows us that when faced with a crisis, resilient people don’t tough it out alone, they reach out for help. Positive social connection reduces feelings of isolation, increases feelings of self worth and belonging and fosters hope. Join community groups (including those

experience or circumstance to be ‘not ok’ will also involve a corresponding breathing disturbance, and CCB enables you to bypass this. Natural breathing has a few simple characteristics: • Inhales are deliberate and soft - as if gently smelling your favourite flowers. • Inhales are somewhat more noticeable than exhales - watch a sleeping cat or dog. • Exhales are completely let go - just like a waterfall. • A natural rhythm has no gaps or pauses. It is a continuous wave-like coming and going of air. • A natural breath leaves the way it arrives, i.e. in and out your nose, or in and out your mouth. • There is no rule about how deep or shallow, or fast or slow, breathing should be. • A free breathing rhythm can vary somewhat depending on what the body needs. Usually, people have only two ‘styles’, ‘normal’ and ‘exertion’. CCB is best learnt in a series of sessions with the same trainer. Sessions last one and a half to two hours, and are best spaced one to two weeks apart. The goal is to develop sufficient skill to do sessions for oneself without needing to be monitored. Achieving this independence typically takes between five to fifteen supervised sessions. The most important factor in learning CCB is your choice of teacher - intuition is your best guide. Leonard Orr, the founding father of CCB said, “As a way to peace and freedom, Conscious Connected Breathing is so simple and easy it feels like cheating."

AUTUMN TREES
It’s a tough environment out there right now and we hope you are keeping well. Luckily, nature never takes a pause, the seasons tick over and our trees keep growing.
Spot an unsafe tree? It’s time to remove dead wood and reduce weight in the longer limbs to avoid broken branches and large wood falling out and causing damage. We can help.
Autumn, and into early Winter is the best time to trim and prune trees and hedges. Trees respond to a good seasonal trim, rewarding you with more spring buds, stronger growth and abundant fruit.
At TreeContracts we’ll take care of all your tree, hedge and chipping needs. Operating for 14 years, we are your local arborists carrying out all aspects of arboricultural service. Caring for sensitive and historical trees is our expertise.
• Trim hedges and trees for shape. • Prune all fruit and garden trees to keep them healthy and ready for winter and the spring flush. • Take a look at your larger trees, check they are safe and ready to handle winter storms.
We have the right mix of experienced people, trucks, chippers and resources for your tree work. TreeContracts also offer consultancy for commercial work and council consents.
