NEW & NOTED DEVONPORT LAW AT MATAKANA Devonport Law is a boutique legal practice that has now opened a branch in Matakana. John Waugh, a long term North Shore resident made the move to Matakana in 2015 when he and his wife traded the city for a rural residential block adjacent to the town. As a partner in Devonport Law with an extensive banking background, much of his time is spent north of Auckland working with farming groups, families and their businesses. Until now there has been no legal practice in the Matakana area and so it has been a natural step for Devonport Law to open its country branch. They offer a full range of services to our clients and welcome enquiries at any time. Whether you are buying or selling a property, making a will, resolving personal, commercial or financial issues, Devonport Law will work with you to facilitate and support you through this process. 0800 devlaw www.devlaw.nz

Good things take time, but she’s aiming for a lifestyle store capable of taking her clients from the surf to the street. Since Matakana is one of the coolest East Coast areas, she’s hoping this store is going to reflect that. “We have some wicked brands lined up already, so keep an eye out and we hope to see you in store soon,” she says. “Omaio Garden” in Matakana was recently elevated from a 5 star garden of National Significance to a 6 star garden of International Significance as assessed by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.Gardens are assessed every three years to ensure standards are maintained and that the description on the Trust website (www.gardens.org.nz) remains accurate. “Our NZGT gardens offer such a variety of styles and visitors can be inspired by the planting skills, creativity, colour combinations and special features of each one,” says Liz.

SAWMILL BREWERY Sawmill Brewery are stoked to have won six medals in the recent New World Beer Awards including another Gold Medal for their flagship brew – the Sawmill Pilsner. “We make a wide range of beer styles for on-premise sales which customers appreciate and it also gives the brewers a lot of creative licence. But the Pilsner is our signature beer and we are all really happy with the Gold. To make a Pilsner well is technically difficult and it’s a real credit to the commitment and talent of the brewery team.” Our Pilsner is always on tap in the Smoko Room and available for take away from the brewery. Open 7 days, 12pm until late.

OUTER SPACE WORDS
Russell Hoffman is in his happy place – standing in a dell on his own property, by a pond where creamy waterlilies gleam in the shade of native forest giants. Tui hiccup and bell above us and a kotare (kingfisher) zips past in a flash of turquoise. His expression is beatific. “It’s the most incredible environment,” he enthuses. Kohurangi (Mists of Heaven) is well-named: high above Matakana on a ridge overlooking the Whangaripo Valley, the views glory in morning mists which cloak the forested folds of the hills. He’s seen flocks of tui mobbing Kahikatea trees loaded with berries up here, and there are always kereru flying their

stately aerobatics over the valley. Russell has a landscaping business called Outer Space. He’s been in the business since 1991, based around Matakana, Leigh and Pakiri. He was working the family veggie garden at the ripe old age of three, but hiking Mt Luxmore in Fiordland (now the Kepler Track) aged 18 caused an epiphany and he has since built his life around the extraordinary ecology of NZ. His passion is evident in the pristine rows of graded native plants in the extensive nursery here. There are some advanced specimen trees – large pohutukawa, mature trunked nikau and
other coastal trees. It’s a stop-start tour, with Russell talking about particular favourites, and exclaiming over form, flower or berry. A few years ago, he was part of a group opposing the expansion of a local quarry on to the flanks of Mt Tamahunga. The research involved gave Russell a deeper understanding of the area – he feels fortunate to be able to use his work to rehabilitate the fragile ecology of the region. There are endangered Hochstetter frogs here plus majestic 700-year-old matai and Northern rata. But Russell is also well-versed in subtropical or European gardens, and he’s created many
other types too, via a little sideline business – he became one of the first ‘greensmen’ in New Zealand around 25 years ago. He’s been responsible for all greenery on-set on some exceptional feature films. Stephen King’s Tommy Knockers, was first; Hercules and Xena followed. For the Narnia movies, Russell went to the Southern Alps and Prague. A Northern European forest was created in a covered horse arena in Waitoki, north of Auckland. A career highlight was Mr Pip, set in Bougainville. “It was a very challenging shoot,” he says. “But the true story was unbelievable. I’ll never forget the environment and the people.” Russell also worked on The Light Between Oceans, an emotional drama set in Australia. The Cape Campbell lighthouse, east of Blenheim, was utilised and Russell and his team spent six weeks in pre-production growing vegetables on under cloches to put together the lighthousekeeper’s extensive vegetable garden – and turfed a lot of tyre tracks. Most recently he did Ridley Scott’s Alien Covenant, filmed partly in Fiordland. Russell’s core business covers every aspect of garden and landscape design, construction and ongoing management. But what really lights him up is native habitat restoration and reconstruction. He and his team recently spent weeks in harnesses on a steep cliff above Daniel’s Reef in Leigh, hauling out agapanthas, pampas and other garden escapees which have turned into noxious weeds. They planted hundreds of coastal natives from the Outer Space nursery in their place. “This country really only has a thin veneer of so-called ‘NZ Pure’,” he says. “Our ecology has been vandalised – the current crisis in our waterways has shown that. It’s good to take steps to improve it whenever we can.” He’s not evangelical about it, but if he can plant an avenue of puriri instead of poplars, he’s a happy man. www.naturehq.co.nz

650 WORDS Chris Lawrance sits at a table in his Point Wells General Store. A warm breeze wafts through the open window. Jan, his wife, greets customers from behind the counter. It’s a peaceful morning in downtown Point Wells ... a far cry from where these two will be next month: The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, undeniably the oldest, scariest and deadliest motorcycle race in the world. When the roads on this tiny isle in the Irish Sea were first gouged out of the landscape, they were only intended for horse-drawn carts with one or two horsepower. In 1907, some nutter decided it might be fun to blat around the islet on ‘touring’ bikes. The Isle of Man TT was born. Today, the sidecar race over three laps of the 60.7 kilometre Snaefell Mountain Course on everyday public roads no wider than the streets of Point Wells is proof that insanity has become tradition. “I’m addicted!” admits Chris. “I’ve raced sidecars at home and abroad for decades with my brother Richard,” but the jewel in the crown was missing. In 1996, the pair decided to tackle the ultimate challenge for man and machine ... “Just once! Just to say we’d done it. I have the medal at home,”

says Chris with a wicked twinkle. This May, the three-wheeler virtuoso and his ‘swinger’ sibling in the sidecar will contest their seventh Isle of Man TT race. “This will be our last TT,” Chris insists. “I swear! We’re aiming for an average of 170 kph just to prove that we can do it.”
postcard cottages, duck under overbridges, squeeze through narrow country lanes and hopefully adhere to the immortal words of Joey Dunlop, 26-time winner of the TT: “There’s a grey blur and a green blur. Try to stay on the grey one...”
Chris Lawrance is well acquainted with the circuit. After his successful finish in 2000, he had no money to get off the island. For the next two years he earned his bread by delivering it. “At 6am in the morning the road over the mountain was empty so I’d drive the bread van as fast as it could go,” he recalls with a chuckle. “On the outskirts of Douglas I’d stop and restack the loaves. It was a great way to learn the course.”
The two are no strangers to losing skin on the green bits. In 2003, they were going full-tilt in sixth gear along the mountain moorland doing about 240 kph when the bike nicked a marker post. “Marshals reckoned we flew higher than a double-decker bus. A sheep fence stopped me and Richard ended up down the road,” recalls Chris. “We were pretty bashed up. Lots of broken bones, I burst my nostrils and Richard popped an eye socket. The crash site was so remote I didn’t think anyone had seen us go off the mountain. Luckily, a helicopter arrived within minutes.”
When the two-time New Zealand champions dump the clutch on their 600cc Formula 2 BLR Honda sidecar in this race against the clock, their job is to go like hell and focus on not having a close encounter of the calamitous kind. And the perils are plenty: dry stone walls, telegraph poles, letter boxes, sheep fences, high curbs, manhole covers and sun strike through tree-lined green tunnels. They hurtle perilously close to picture-
It took twelve years for the brothers to return: “I had this hereditary kidney condition. While the specialists were checking me out for a transplant they discovered a leaky heart valve. Richard said he’d give me one of his kidneys if I kept racing,” says Chris, with a cheeky grin.

The TT fascination is not just reserved for competitors. Every year, the organisers open the mountain course to the public. It’s called Mad Sunday. Speed limits? None! Wannabe racers from around the world, most likely hung-over, are let loose in their cars or on their bikes. Chris: “The road gets closed every few minutes because of crashes. We keep well clear. Sometimes we go up on the mountain and watch the idiots doing their stuff.” The world traveller has a well-stocked vault of stories to tell, which he shares in his upcoming book ‘Living the Dream’. But first he has one more chapter to write. www.facebook.com/nzthrottleblacks

MODERN MATAKANA WORDS

This Matakana house was one of the six finalists for Home of the Year 2017. Just outside Matakana village, it lies in a flat paddock with a rural backdrop of hills and farmland. But there are no references to simple barns here – this place has an urban feel which makes use of high-end materials to create a clever designer home. The house is big on functional spaces for its owners; they have young children and like having people over. Architect Dominic Glamuzina started a new practice a couple of years ago, after seven years of partnership with Aaron Paterson (and a further seven years on his own before that). Glamuzina Architects is based on Cross Street, just off K’Rd – a very urban environment which he loves. Dom lectures at the Auckland University School of Architecture and mentors thesis students – he enjoys the intellectual rigour of the educational environment. Dom won the opportunity to design the house over another firm, and Leigh builder Rod Cooper won a tender of his own to put it together. Cooper Construction has been responsible for realising some of the most iconic designs around the Matakana Coast, including the Matakana Cinemas and Koru House. Dom says of Rod Cooper: “He’s a builder you can talk aesthetics with – and if there’s a design problem he’ll usually have resolved it by the time you get around to discussing it with him.” The house is L-shaped, built around a sleek, sunken courtyard with an adjacent pool. Because the house is in the middle of a paddock and not presenting a single exterior face to an urban street, every elevation has been considered. The roof echoes the hills nearby with pointed bat-ear skylights breaking its long, low line. A sculptural, angled chimney-piece of bagged brick creates textural interest which is picked up elsewhere, both outside and in. Dom says, “The house was initially more brutal – there was a lot of textural brickwork… but as we

moved through the design process, it was replaced with wood. The exterior framework that floats over the cladding outside is about creating that texture now.” The cedar battens which line the facade are a pure design feature; they accentuate the placement of windows and ready the eye for the boxy, Mondrian-esque shelving units inside, that run from floor to ceiling. These initially feel mid-century modern, but the steel-framed French doors combined with dark oak floorboards give the place more of an European country feel. Inside, the skylights create pools of light along a corridor which connects the two wings of the house. This long, white walk creates a natural gallery and the inner angles of the skylights make for fascinating pyramidal planes. More light pours in from the clerestory windows in the open living area at the north end of the house. A playful media room, accessed from the main living space, is dubbed ‘the snug’. The curved, chute-style entrance way takes a few steps down into what is effectively a below-ground bunker. There’s more box shelving and ample built-in banquette seating above the carpeted floor. This cosy room fits like a comforting glove, in stark contrast to the wide-open, lightsaturated spaces of the main living area. “Yeah, it was a fun build all right,” says builder Rod Cooper. “Lots of quirky detail – but my team made sure it all went smoothly. There are always a few things that you look at on an architect-designed house like this and wonder if there could be an easy way out, but you have to keep the faith and find a way – and we did.”

Walking into Board & Batten is like entering a wonderland of visual delight. Instantly, you are transported into a serene world of understated luxury with the layering of textures and soft colour palettes that enhance the warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. This is because head designer, Deb Crowe, runs her business from the heart – she is Board & Batten. Every detail and angle of the exclusively curated treasures you find in this unique barn on the hill is selected with careful consideration - often derived from a project with one of her many life-time clients. “They just keep on coming back”, says Deb with a smile, “many of them are on house 4 or 5 and we still enjoy an intimate journey with each property.” Being allowed to enter a client’s inner most world (their home) is a privilege to Deb. She and her team work on a variety of projects – from kitchen and bathroom designs to complete new builds or renovations. The consultation often starts as a visit to the barn showroom. “Viewing stunning fabrics for window treatments or playing with textures of tiles for kitchens leads to a casual conversation and, before you know it, we are working on a dwelling in the South Island”. While the projects span nationwide, Deb particularly loves designing for the Matakana country and coastal terrain. Her signature style of classic contemporary suits the climate and lifestyle that clients are looking for – a simple and elegant calmness, creating tranquillity in all living spaces. The intuitive design process, however, also transpires to the exterior of the home. “From the moment you walk through the front gate of a property, the home owner’s aesthetics should be seen and also felt. You can’t achieve that if the exterior of the home is not tended to so we have been offering landscaping as

part of our design services as well”, says Deb. This is evident in the grounds of Board & Batten, with carefully manicured grounds that give just the right approach to casual and precise balance. Deb leads a talented team, working out of a studio space at the back of the showroom. Coffee is on constant offer and a giggle or heart to heart not far away. And when the studio space is a bit too tight, you can always detour ‘into’ one of the oversized, opulent, divine couches in the showroom and try and concentrate under the twinkle lights of the luminaires above. “It is not uncommon to find retail customers or clients quietly sitting there taking it all in. You can almost see them leaving the stresses of daily life behind as they relax into the couch. Job well done, I think”, says Deb. www.boardandbatten.co.nz

THE ONLY ONE
Undoubtedly one of the most desirable properties on the Matakana Coast, this is an outstanding residence with caretaker’s cottage. Perfectly placed on one hectare of residential-zoned land with full riparian rights, it’s in two cross-lease titles with subdivision potential. This is a substantial home built to exacting standards including extensive automation, electronics, security and back-up systems. There’s a gourmet kitchen with a fully equipped butler’s pantry and an open plan lounge and dining area, all on beautiful European oak floors. You’ll glory in the sunsets over the estuary from the sheltered outdoor living area, or relax in the impressive home theatre with massive 133” hard screen with a superb sound system. Perhaps after luxuriating in the central bathhouse you’ll retire to the master suite, which has a separate dressing room, sumptuous bathroom and more gorgeous water views. There are three more double bedrooms, a spacious office, guest powder room and spacious laundry, plus four-bay garage and paved parking for multiple vehicles and boats. There is no public access to your private waterfront framed by ancient pohutukawa trees. It’s complete with concrete boat ramp and jetty, kayak and dinghy storage. The extensive landscaping on the estate will provide an even more private haven in years to come; the resort-style pergolas, mood lighting and entrance pond already set the scene. The cute one-bedroom cottage near the second entrance is ideal as caretaker or guest accommodation. A three-bay shed and hard-stand area for equipment and materials sits opposite. And the original fifties farm shed near the water – garden shed, man cave or perhaps future pool house? Just 200m to Pt Wells General Store and community facilities, it’s around 5km to Omaha Beach or Matakana Village, and there are excellent cycleways to both destinations. It’s only 50 minsutes drive to Albany – less once the new northern motorway is completed in 2021. To be sold by tender: 12pm Friday 12th May 2017. Viewing strictly by appointment. MEET THE ARCHITECTS BLAIR MORAY-COOK Director, The House Concept How would you describe your design principles? Having a drafting background, I tend to design from the end. Good thought out design solutions can minimalise complications and costs down the track. What’s most important to you in a home? The entry of the home, this sets the scene. As soon as you walk in the home needs to capture the best aspect. The orientation of the home and bringing in natural light are also equally important. What’s the future building trend or material you’re most interested in?
Building smart and sustainably, and also incorporating technology within our homes. What’s the best thing about building locally? Our area is growing at a rapid pace but maintaining quality. With the push for eco designed suburbs, I feel that we are setting the benchmark for other developments within Auckland. It’s an exciting time to be living here and there is no other place I would rather be!

VINCE ABELA Abela Architects How would you describe your design principles? It’s about our unique response to the site, and the owner’s particular needs and wishes for their dream home. Every location has its own individual feel and every owner has their own individual desires. We work with these to create an equally individual response - beyond the ordinary into the beautiful and extraordinary. What’s most important to you in a home? A home should fit its owner. Rooms within and spaces outside need to have the right relationships to one another, and work for the owner now and in the future.
What’s the future building trend or material you’re most interested in? Sustainability and energy efficiency are an important focus for us. New materials and technologies are allowing for more efficient homes that retain their natural appeal while also being more durable. What’s the best thing about building locally? The Matakana Coast has a range of special microclimates ranging from coastal to rural and bush settings. I’ve come to appreciate the unique feel and opportunities they provide. www.abela.co.nz
DELIVERING LOCAL LIFESTYLES For more than fourteen years, local Platinum Homes License owners Ian and Hazel Main have enjoyed helping others become locals when they share in the experience of building their clients’ dream homes. They have found that trust is a key factor when people are choosing their building partner and that being transparent and honest up front is an important way to help achieve that trust, as is helping to explain the true cost of your project, not just what the house costs! It also helps that they can boast over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, specialising in large and rural builds, know the area and know what to look out for when guiding you through the entire build process: from plan and site choice, through colours and council, to handing over your keys, covering maintenance best practices and beyond – a complete end to end service! Being a part of the local community is an important part of their core beliefs and is reflected by their support and sponsorship of local events. An example of this is being title sponsors for the Platinum Homes Orewa Half Marathon for the past seven years: a great way to blend their passion for sport with helping locals achieve great things! If passion is important, if choice matters, if honest advice is needed upfront, if you want end to end service from knowledgeable people with expertise within your community, if you want to deal with real people who care and who listen, and if quality and best value are important to you, come and visit one of our local show homes and chat to one of our team…so we can share the Platinum Homes difference with you. 09 281 3076 rodney@platinumhomes.co.nz Advertorial

THE BLACK HOUSE WORDS
JESSICA
Between Te Arai and Mangawhai, The Black House is nestled on one acre of quiet countryside, and was built by Mangawhai locals, Smith Construction. The home of clients Matt Adams and Jo Blincow, who are the busy owners of Mangawhai based holiday rental company, Bach Stay. It’s a home that is modern and comfortable while having open plan living with great indoor outdoor flow, capturing the amazing coastal and rural views from the site. • Cladding: Aluminium vertical weatherboards on cavity from Nu Wall with stack bond block walls • Roof: Low roofline from Carter Roofing • Feature Door: 9m Sliding Door from Whangarei Aluminium K E Y F E AT U R E S :
• Roof has been gently angled to divert the prevailing wind flow as well as reinforce the box geometry of the design. • High finish polished concrete floors, expertly finished by Polished Concrete Ltd.
WHITING
• Black kitchen with mirrored ply ceiling with negative detail • Large 9m sliding door in the living area creates a seamless flow from the interior space out onto the hardwood decking. MAIN CHALLENGES:
• Because the site is exposed to very high winds a lot of early starts for the Smith Construction team were required to set out walls and roofing. • The joinery was strategically placed and sized to fit evenly between weatherboards. • Careful calculations for the position of each window to have an even amount of weatherboard either side. • To achieve the level entry shower, in the bathroom the concrete shower floor had to be formed as part of the concrete slab. This meant it had to be created while placing the floor, which proved quite a difficult challenge to ensure a good result. www.smithconstructionnz.co.nz

EVERYTHING AND THE KITCHEN SINK Leafing through home magazines or swiping among Pinterest can draw your attention to the swankiest of European kitchens. Who doesn’t love white on white? Or crisp granite contrasting with beautiful tapware? High end in every sense, except on your pocket, Matakana Coast have a new kid on the block. ‘European Kitchens’ is a leading supplier and installer of top quality modular flat packed kitchens, direct from European factories. If that sounds a little expensive, think again. The team behind European Kitchens have ushered a bold promise – savings of up to 40% on any quote already sourced. Founder, John, says, “as a New Zealand owned and managed business, we understand the enormity of choosing a kitchen. We believe affordability and quality deserve to go hand in hand. Our water resistant kitchen cabinets and European fixtures and fittings are beautifully made, often exceeding NZ standards. We’re keen to support the highly pressured developer and trade markets. Or the householder undertaking renovations, a rental property, new home build, or wishing to add-value before selling.” Cutting out as many middlemen as possible in order to get the product directly to the client means European Kitchens provide unbeatable value, with no project considered too small. With options for either flat packed or fully assembled cabinets, DIY or DIFM? That’s code for Do it Yourself or Do it For Me. Either way you do it, the process is promised to be a breeze, with no frustrating wait - almost everything is in stock. Although white is still the most popular colour, there are numerous styles and trends to pick from, along with the latest in sink and tapware. From benchtop styles of laminate, stone, granite or whatever the wish – the options are exciting. Best still, state-of-the-art design programmes at the Albany warehouse allow clients to experience their kitchen in virtual reality. BOX™ LIVING At Box™ we realise that for most of our clients, building a home is the biggest investment of their lives. Whether that’s a holiday escape by the coast, a family home in the country, or a retirement bolthole in a new suburban subdivision, the design should work hard to offer maximum opportunity for enjoyment in summer and winter. A part from the correct orientation on the site to capture sun and views, and the obvious addition of fittings such as double glazing and fireplaces to keep Jack Frost outdoors, there are many homely touches that can ‘warm’ a space visually. Here are some architectural tricks Box™ explores to bring warmth to interiors: • Timber elements such as wall panelling, stairwell balustrades and plywood ceilings bring an intimate feel to the palette • Concrete floors act as thermal ‘sinks’ to trap heat during the day and slowly release it at night • Floor-to-ceiling glazing is teamed with wide overhangs specially angled to allow low winter sun into the home, but provide shade in summer • Built-in bench seating in a sunny window or alongside a fireplace gives a feeling of homeliness (and a cosy space to sit). www.box.co.nz | 0800 717 717 Advertorial

PERFECT PERMACULTURE
In 2012, high on a hill just out of Matakana Karen Ward and Hamish Stewart purchased a one hectare NNW sloping field. They wanted to grow as much food as possible for their catering business (www.hscatering.co.nz) and to build a passive solar house that by design would reduce future bills by making best use of all that can be harnessed for free; sunshine, wind, gravity and water. They have planted many fruit, nut and shelter trees over the last few years, implemented a passive watering system for them by creating linked ponds and swales and are in the process of setting up garden beds for vegetables. But for the moment they are in full swing with the house build – a Graeme North designed house.

It works using gravity and vermiculture to turn what is regarded as waste into something useful that feeds the trees. What does a native nursery, music festival venue, beef operation and fifth-generation farm look like? Unreal! Picture visionary minds, eco warriors, land diversification and sheer hard graft. The Worsfold family can hang their hats on all the above, yet they’re a humble lot. As caretakers of their land, their purpose is preservation and diversification - not just of their own land, but for the clientele they assist. Their family business, Rural Design, was established in 1984 and continues to flourish as an ecological restoration advisory service and wholesale nursery. Today, the Worsfold’s four sons are the leading faces onsite. Blake says a permaculture conference his father attended in 1982 was the start of a new masterplan for their farm. “Dairying was the formula until 2002, but other ideas simmered away and our four-hectare nursery opened in 2014. The beef operation adds to the bottom line, and music festival ‘Northern Bass’ has a regular booking onsite.” The Worsfold’s walk the talk when it comes to land diversity.

“Life is a series of experiences. Just try something and see how it fits,” smiles Liz Bennett, radiating enthusiasm. As a husband and wife team, she and Andrew Smith have been growing a delicious range of organic salads, microgreens and herbs for 15 years, supplying their family and friends with beautifully nutrient-rich food. After realising the potential for a business, Liz and Andrew took their show on the road only six months ago, making their produce available to the keen public, and Kauri Creek Gardens was born. In February they opened a stall at the Matakana Farmers’ Market where every Saturday, they sell bags of their salad mixes and organic greens. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers, Liz admits that the markets are the best part of the week. Often selling out of their leafy greens in the morning, the duo has also opened a pop-up shop on Friday afternoons from 2.30 to 4pm outside the Presbyterian Church between Snells Beach and Algies Bay. Having eaten organically all her life, Liz says that the pair “wouldn’t do it any other way”. Organic food is truly the way of the future, and Liz hopes to see consumers start demanding better, healthier produce. By staying small, hands-on and local, Liz and Andrew promise affordable, fresh and flavoursome greens that are packed with everything your mother says you should eat. www.facebook.com/kauricreekgardens

ROASTED FEIJOA AND PORK PIZZA WORDS
For years, Peter and Helen Lory of Quinta Feijoas have been working towards organic certification, and they’ve finally received it. They’ve noticed a huge improvement in the growth of trees, the bird life and pollination and the quality of their delicious organic fruit. The Lorys hand-pick their feijoas from early autumn – their chutneys, jams and jellies are found throughout Matakana. Eat feijoas raw or use in muffins, smoothies or crumbles. Roasting feijoas intensifies the flavour and the Lorys add 8mm rings of feijoas with skin left on into the roasting pan with a pork roast for the last 10 minutes of cooking.

“The view from here, with the dappled light through the trees, is just too good not to share,” says Rachel. “Warkworth is a day-time town so it made sense to offer lunches, and now local businesses can discover us as well.” For Rachel and Matt Macfarlane, the Wharf Street Bistro is about creating a space that radiates peace and comfort, and somewhere they can make heartwarming food with care. They’re big on creative cuisine and good ingredients so food for the restaurant is sourced locally whenever possible. “We get our meat from Warkworth Butchery, the oysters are local, and we grow our own herbs. I try to come up with seasonal cocktails too, depending on what fruit is available. I’m thinking up something to do with guavas and feijoas at the moment,” she laughs. When they opened Wharf Street Bistro, 18 months ago, Rachel and Matt set about building, rather than buying, what they needed in the restaurant and using upcycled materials to achieve the atmosphere they were after. The tradition of do-it-yourself began with Rachel’s parents. “My father was a handyman who could build anything. And my mum was a baker, sewer and general handywoman too.” The overall effect is an accumulation of the couple’s creativity and experiences from years of hospitality-based travel. Rachel has been very active in the local hospitality area since the family moved here over three years ago, managing and revamping the restaurant at Brick Bay, and managing the outfit and launch of the restaurant at Sawmill Brewery. At the same time, she was launching Wharf Street and being mother to two children. Yet it all seems to sit comfortably on the shoulders of this astute businesswoman. Long term, Matt and Rachel dream of opening a boutique wilderness resort that really showcases the best of what New Zealand has to offer. “We worked at a high-end glamping resort in Canada and it was just wonderful. We’d love to do something like that.” For now, though, Rachel is concentrating on Wharf Street and bringing to fruition their full vision for the bistro. She would like to see Warkworth become a food and art hub for the area, particularly as it goes through its projected growth spurt. “I’d like to run a Wharf Street Bistro boat on the river but that’s just a bit of a dream at the moment. I have a different crazy plan every week.”

MOSAIC ARTIST: JOY BELL WORDS
LUKE
WILLIAMSON
“I’m the happiest person I know,” says Joy Bell, the high-energy, lifeloving artist whose work to date has primarily been mosaics. You can see examples of her vibrant artistry on the clock tower in Warkworth and at the Waikumete Cemetery in Glen Eden. Producing her beautiful mosaics was a nice way to make a living but, following a final large-scale project planned for October, Joy will undergo a transformation to a textile artist. “I’ve been the artist I had to be but now it’s time to find the artist I am.” She already has her first work in mind – six mongrel terrier heads mounted on shields. “Hopefully, it will really disturb people,” she chuckles. Soon after, she has plans for a life-size horse head. Joy loves the combination of animals and textiles, and she is an authority on vintage teddy bears. “I was able to buy my first house in Ponsonby by selling my vintage teddy bear collection.” But before she can become the artist she suspects she is, Joy has a self-imposed job list that must be ticked off. The unfinished but already captivating mosaic entry to the studio needs completing, and the beautiful recycled glassware conservatory has to be done as well. Last, but not least, the house has to be painted. Only then will she allow herself to set foot in the studio and start on her textile work. On the 13th April Joy's son Alec, less than 2 weeks away from his 21st birthday, was involved in a horrific hit and run while walking home. Although extremely lucky to be alive Alec has a very long journey to recovery a head of him. Joy's family and friends have set up a Give a Little Page to help assist Alec with his recovery. www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/prayersforalec
The core of her house is the old church at the end of Woodcocks Rd, where it meets the railway track. The house, studio and garden are all a delight to see, and the good news for you is that Joy will be accepting visitors once all the jobs are done and the studio is christened. There will be updates on Joy’s Facebook page, so grab the opportunity to visit this unique and vivacious artist in her natural habitat. 09 422 4957 Images of mosaic work by Sasha Wilson.

BUILDING MATES IN MANGAWHAI WORDS
KIRSTY
MILLAR
Hands up who knows about the shared shed initiative? Beginning in Australia in the 90s and rapidly spreading across other countries, this fantastic concept brings blokes together to tinker and create. While that’s the MO, it’s actually a whole lot more. Think companionship, a sense of purpose and skill-sharing, and you’ve hit the nail on the head (literally). Mangawhai has recently joined the trend, opening a shed for locals in November last year. Founder Stephen Mackay says, “While we follow the spirit and ethos of shared sheds worldwide, we have extended the opportunity to anyone in our community, not just the blokes. When I mooted the idea, there was a lot of interest from females, but they’re yet to show up. Perhaps they saw it as a chance to push their men out the door. Call it a healthy break from each other. But they’re always welcome!” Stephen’s former cowshed is a glorious space to create. He says it’s also a meditative zone – the energy is magical. A steady buzz of tools, silent patches, laughs and unity. Skills are swapped and future workshops conspired. Current projects vary; Phil is working on his motorhome, Damion an outdoor shower platform and Stephen an arty letter box. About eight members comfortably fit in the shed, but Stephen has a goal to outgrow this space, “I’d love it to grow so big that we can start serving our community with practical things for schools, clubs, and churches.” The Mangawhai Shed meet each Friday, 10.30am at 206 Cames Road, Mangawhai. www.facebook.com/mangawhaished

WEAVING IT ALL TOGETHER WORDS
KATHY
Liz Morrow sits in the sunny ‘garden room’ at Omaio and opens a manila folder stuffed with cuttings, letters and photos. They’re keepsakes of her enduring relationship with an extraordinary family – the Te Kanawas of Oparure, Te Kuiti. We discuss this snapshot of a shared history over coffee and Liz’s delectable baking. Kahutoi Te Kanawa (Ngāti Kinohaku, Maniapoto, Waikato, Tuwharetoa), the daughter of Diggeress Te Kanawa, and granddaughter of Dame Rangimarie Hetet will soon be joining Liz at Omaio. Kahu is teaching a five-day weaving workshop here startin 8 May, as part of the inaugural ‘Creative Matakana’, a series of eight creative courses which will hopefully become an annual event. Liz and Kahu grew up in a small town north of Te Kuiti. Decades later they’re coming together again, each showcasing extraordinary skills in their chosen fields. Liz’s Takatu Peninsula garden, recently categorised as a six-star Garden of International Significance (one of just three in the North Island) will be the backdrop for Kahu’s vast knowledge of rāranga (plaiting and weaving techniques). The harakeke (flax) used for the workshop will come from Omaio – the bushes which now flourish here were grown from plants in Diggeress’ own garden. With five generations – 170 years – of weavers behind her, Kahu has a
HUNTER
Masters Degree in Art and Design and is currently working on her PhD. The legacy of weaving continues in her family through her sisters, a niece and herself. Her sister Rangi is a Māori textile conservator, and they often share common interests in process and design. Kahu has published articles, lectured in several institutions and exhibited in the USA, England, India, Australia, Germany and Canada. She has demonstrated weaving at the British Museum and many other places, including the recent Lindauer exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Kahu has worked in the education field for the past 30 years, developing programs from certificate to postgraduate level. The store of ancient wisdom is enormous – there have been kuia (grandmothers) who could name up to 60 different flaxes and the best use for each type – but there’s a danger of it being lost. Hence Kahu’s thesis, based on the intergenerational transfer of Māori weaving knowledge. The Creative Matakana workshop will cover harvesting and preparation, and participants will learn plaiting and weaving techniques before making three types of kete (basket). There may still be one or two places available on this and other courses – phone Vivienne Kerr for details. www.creativematakana.nz | 021 541 958
