THINKING INSIDE THE BOX
For Maria and Joe Artho of NZ IN A BOX®, creating memory card games of New Zealand was an easy decision. Both have travelled to far corners of the world, but to them, Aotearoa – New Zealand will be their forever home. In fact, they say it's hard to get them to travel anywhere nowadays! Home and office are situated in the Matakana hills, in a unique bush clad setting, they affectionately call '#paradise', the perfect inspiration for creating beautiful photographic series of card games. They are passionate about New Zealand and THE showcasing the diverse places and unique wildlife. NZ IN A BOX® was designed to be an easy-to-carry, light to post souvenir for tourism retail both nationally and internationally. A souvenir to remember a New Zealand holiday, or spread the love to others overseas. An age-old game, now with Kiwi themed imagery - you put the cards face down, take turns flipping them over and try to remember where the cards are for matching pairs. Encouraging family engagement
through gameplay was a particular motivator in the game development. Their slogan... ‘A game for all to play’ was coined by a friend, means anyone from five years to 100+ can play this game of memory cards. Following the success of the first edition games NZ IN A BOX® and ZOO IN A BOX® they have recently embarked on a redesign and rebrand. The first of the newly designed games NZ IN A BOX Te reo Māori will be launched around August presents 2019. Te reo Māori is undergoing a resurgence with record numbers of people learning the MUSIC OF language. They plan to introduce the new game as a fun educational aid in schools and other institutions, as well as souvenir outlets. Bringing basic pronunciation tips plus Te Reo Māori for key concepts, greetings, colours and numbers. Research and development is Maria's department under the guidance of Kotihi Reo Consultants in Rotorua, who have provided valuable editing and advice.
LEONARD COHEN A Journey 1967 - 2016
The new series of games will each be labelled with the NZ IN A BOX® brand and simply called ‘Te Reo Māori’, ‘The Original’ and ‘Animals’. Maria has been working closely with a well-established game manufacturer towards achieving their ultimate goal of having the games made in Auckland. Maria and Joe have other sidelines to their business; Maria has written and published her first children's picture book ‘Jin's Great Escape – the true story of Auckland Zoo's famous runaway otter’. The picture book is based on the actual facts of Jin's escape as she was spotted in the suburbs, on beaches, and islands in the Hauraki Gulf. The mischievous little otter made world news and captured the hearts of a nation. Maria has another book in the pipeline – when she finds time to knuckle down and burn the midnight oil once again! www.facebook.com/nzinabox www.nzinabox.nz

PROFILE
PAULL ROBSON – KING OF THE MOUNTAIN WORDS
Did you know that the 2019 New Zealand downhill mountain bike champion is from Matakana? Paull Robson was named the winner of the Masters Division after a dramatic series of races around the country, even though he couldn’t compete in the final event due to a nasty crash.
REBECKA
BJELFVENSTAM
KEELING
As Paull came over a metre-high rock drop, his front wheel got stuck in a hole concealed by mud. He came off the bike and had an unfortunate landing on a rock, but still managed to get back on the bike and win the race.
The championship series started at Auckland Downhill Club in Warkworth’s Dome Valley, where Paull placed first of about 90 competitors on his home turf.
“We wear body-armour, but I hit the rock on my side – just between the chest and back plates. I was pretty winded when I came back on my bike, but I knew I could finish. It turned out I had broken two ribs,” he says.
The second race took place in Christchurch and got quite intense after the weather took an unexpected turn – from hot and dusty during practise runs, to rain and sleet on race-day.
After a life-long career in adventure sports – competing at national levels in snowboarding, surfing, BMX and road cycling – Paull has an extensive list of broken bones.
“By the time we had the race-run, the track was what we call a slip-and-slide,” says Paull.
The latest injury meant Paull couldn't participate in the final race in Cardrona, but his overall scores were high enough to grant him the win anyway.
“Most people can ride a bike fast, especially down the hill, but to stay in control and have the bike working for you is another story.” “The competitive bikes are very expensive, but I've been lucky that my suppliers Worrall, Marleen Wholesalers and Shimano have come to the party and supported me through this journey,” he says. If you’re local and you’re into bicycles, you probably already know Paull from his shop in Matakana Country Park. “Bikes are my passion. My dad and older brother rode national events in road cycling, so I grew up around bikes and have been in and out of workshops since I was 14. Nine years ago, I opened up a shop to see if I could make a living out of it,” says Paull.

There are two parts to the business – the bike hire side and the mechanic side, offering repairs, custom builds and parts supply. “I really like the variety of people I get to meet, from all walks of life. The mix of locals and international tourists,” says Paull. “I like seeing people on bikes and seeing them experience the same joy I do. And I get great satisfaction from bringing in tourist dollars in a sustainable way, with minimal impact on the environment.” Paull is also excited about Matakana Cycle Trail Trust’s work on establishing bicycle tracks between Matakana, Snells Beach, Warkworth and Puhoi. “We already ride between Puhoi, Kaipara Harbour and Matakana, but through the forest. We've hand-built trails as well as using forestry roads. Look up ‘Dome Valley Mountain Bikers’ on Facebook to join us!” he says. Paull would love to see more people on bicycles and giving downhill mountain biking a go. “Few people are aware that we have got five downhill mountain bike courses in the Dome Valley, ranging from intermediate to expert. Auckland Downhill Club is probably one of the smallest clubs in the country, and we’re always welcoming to new members,” says Paull. “Part of the reason I’m is still racing at 52 years old is to support a sport that I really love.”

MANGAWHAI ARTISTS' WORKSHOPS Three special art workshops are being held in the Mangawhai Artists Gallery during May. Following a successful project to raise $100,000 to build an all-year art workspace, the workshops are rewards for people who pledged money to help reach the target. Elena Nikolaeva and Wendy Clifford, talented and popular art tutors in Mangawhai both offered workshops to help raise the money. Wendy will lead charcoal and pastel classes and Elena’s workshop using inexpensive ‘gold leaf’ will allow participants to play with this traditional material in a contemporary way, adding a touch of gold to their paintings. The full winter workshop programme, starting in June, will be announced soon.

MANGAWHAI TAVERN MARKET PHOTOS
Walking in through the back gates of the old iconic Mangawhai Tavern on a Saturday morning, you are greeted with foot tapping old school Harmonica Blues being played live by a busker before you take in the sights, smells and sounds of the Mangawhai Tavern Market. Everyone is smiling. What a great vibe there is at this relatively new, but wonderfully well established Saturday market on the water’s edge in Mangawhai; a great place to hang out with friends and family for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. There is a fantastic array of talented people

selling their wares: locally grown organic produce, handmade clothing, woodware, toys, sauces and chutneys, face painting for the kids, skin care for men and women, candles, artisan bread, jewellery, photography and art, beeswax wraps, local olive oil, an amazing Deli and the best coffee cart in the land! Then there is the food on offer! Inevitably visitors gravitate to the garden bar area to relax, listen to the live music and grab some of the fabulous treats from the passionate foodies here. The dumplings are amazing and the fritters are fabulous. Whitebait, Mussel, Prawn and Paua fritters are all on offer! There is incredibly tasty vegetarian and vegan dishes that are ready to eat
or to take home, and the smoothies are made with fresh produce. Over in the main marquee there is some incredible peanut butter, very tempting cakes and treats and fabulous French pastries. The organisers of the market run the Deli and the Fresh Fish Caravan, and offer up the tastiest smoked salmon kebabs and a restaurant quality seared scallop dish that will want you coming back for more. The busy organisers, Mike and Vanessa, are passionate about food and hospitality and love their market. They keep all of their “wonderful vendors” directly involved in virtually everything
that is the Mangawhai Tavern Market. “We simply couldn’t do this without them. There are so many talented people in our local community and beyond, that have a chance to branch out and be recognised for what they create at our funky little market. And they all have a story to tell about how they started and what they do.” Mike and Vanessa tell us, “We love the supportive nature of this community so we donate a site every week to a community focused project.” The Mangawhai Tavern is a big part of the market
as well. Their doors open at 10.30am offering a fabulous breakfast and lunch menu, as well as refreshments from the bar. The view from the Garden Bar along the Estuary to the Sand Dunes is breath-taking. Mangawhai Tavern Market runs Saturdays, 8.30am to 1pm.

RUI CERAMICS
Emma Zhang is a young potter based in Warkworth who grew up in Shenzhen, China. Since discovering clay as a medium, through which she can express her creativity, she has quickly become part of the local craft scene and is grateful for the help she has received to further her interest. “The more exposure I have to experienced potters, the more passionate and inspired I feel about the possibilities of what I can create. Established local potters Judy Wood and Rick Urban have been so generous with their advice and encouragement.” Earlier this year Emma travelled to Jingdezhen, China where pottery has been produced for 2,000 years. The experience made her more aware of the timelessness of the art. She saw for herself the way techniques have been handed down and refined over a hundred generations. Emma’s trade name ‘Rui Ceramics’ reflects her regard for this
tradition. Rui is her Chinese name meaning ‘first snow of the spring’. She is also inspired by the beauty of the New Zealand landscape, particularly the beaches in Kawau Bay close to her home. Mixing her own glazes, she is mindful of the earthy tones of sand and soil and the blue-green of the sea in all its moods. While her emphasis at the moment is to produce domestic homeware, beautiful as well as functional, she takes every opportunity to further her experience by attending workshops at Auckland Studio Potters. A project Emma is undertaking with her Kiwi husband Jon is the conversion of a building on their Warkworth property to create a pottery studio. When completed this will house a kiln and also give space to display her pottery.
Recognition of the quality of her work came in 2018 when she was awarded a merit award at the ‘Dream On’ Rodney Art Competition and a number of galleries throughout New Zealand currently exhibit her work. Emma is also enthusiastic about passing on the skills she has learned to the next generation. “As a mother I see myself as a role model for my children. Putting their hands in the clay and getting creative is a great experience. Through art we deliver a message paying homage to the past. Pottery is the way I express myself, it has changed my life.” For more information or to see where Rui Ceramics' next market will be, follow on Facebook or Instagram. www.instagram.com/rui_emma_zhang www.ruiceramics.co.nz

LULA'S UPCYCLED LINEN PHOTOS
JOSIE

The love of making children’s clothing from recycled fabrics has always been a brewing passion for Annette Vuletich, owner and creator of Lula’s Upcycled Linen, itching to spring out from her fingertips for many years. However, building and running a successful family business with her husband became the main priority for many years. “In the back of my mind I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and getting closer to retiring age I often found myself thinking, ‘If I don’t pull out my old sewing machine, which had been sitting in the garage for over 30 years, and have a go I will never know if this latent passion of mine would amount to anything.’” “Walking into an op shop one day, I couldn’t believe the treasures I saw. Beautiful old embroidered tablecloths, handmade doilies, and sheets that we used when we were children. I wanted to bring these back to life and show them off in another form by making them into children’s clothing. Something that would turn heads!” And that is when Annette was ready to embark on her journey and Lula's Upcycled Linen was born. With her mind buzzing with creativity, she matched colours, patterns and textures, and was already thinking of the next unique item to make while still sewing a piece. “I had to get my creations out there so opened a Facebook page, which I named after my granddaughter, Lula. As my page grew in popularity and after receiving amazingly kind words of support from my followers and family, I decided to get out there and go to markets to show off my creations.” Most Saturdays you can find Lula’s at the Mangawhai Markets amongst a wealth of fabulous, like-minded talent. Annette also heads down to the General Collective markets in Auckland two to three times a year.
“Here I get to meet many of my Facebook followers in person. I’m so grateful to have customers who love to see their child/children wearing my designs. I can finally say I have followed my dream!” lucilasrecycled@yahoo.co.nz www.facebook.com/lulasupcycledlinen
DYE HAPPY Looking for locally produced craft supplies? Look no further than Dye Happy! Owner/operator Tureya Healey-Diaz is a long-term local of Leigh and a consummate maker, proficient in a number of crafts. Tureya has been dyeing for about five years, after she couldn’t find the yarn she wanted to knit with. After experimenting with food colouring first and then looking into natural dyes, Tureya found that professional acid dyes were needed to get the richness of colour she desired. “Acid dye sounds scary but all it means is that citric acid must be added to the dye bath to make the dye colour fast. No water is disposed of until it is clear of dye and returned to a neutral pH using baking soda. I use it to water the flower garden so none goes down the drain.” Dye Happy supports the Aotearoa wool industry by exclusively working with yarns that are grown and milled here. The yarn is bought from a small handful of family owned wool mills who spin fleece into yarn. It is then dyed with professional acid dyes in Tureya’s kitchen. It is a lot of hard work but Tureya knows it will lead to greater things for her customers. “My passion is to inspire others to use their creativity and experience the responsiveness of natural fibres. To feel great because they’ve learnt a new stitch or technique, to take the time to enjoy the tactile sensations of hand craft. You don’t have to be making something fancy to enjoy the process. The health benefits of mindfulness and yarn craft are well documented, so providing beautifully hand dyed yarns is my way of supporting people on that path.” A selection of Dye Happy yarn is available from Dye Happy’s Facebook shop or at The Knitting Truck in Matakana for those that need to squish. Both are regularly updated with new colours. Tureya says, “Ann from The Knitting Truck has been a huge support to me as I have set up this business and developed my yarns. Without Ann there would be no Dye Happy. We are so lucky to still have a local yarn store in the area.” dyehappy.yarn@gmail.com www.facebook.com/dyehappyyarn

THREADBOX DESIGN & SUPPLY CO. PHOTOS
Threadbox Design & Supply Co. is run by husband and wife team, Kyle and Alison Robinson. Based in Mangawhai Heads, the company started six years ago when Ali decided to sell T-Shirts at the local Mangawhai Markets. “To be honest I thought Ali was mad! We had three young children at the time and I was commuting to Auckland so I wasn’t sure where she would find the time,” says Kyle. But Ali was persistent with the idea and they took a leap of faith, purchasing screen printing equipment to support their humble beginnings. Each week more and more of their designs would sell, with Ali acknowledging, “our community is super supportive - pretty soon lots of people were out and about wearing our stuff!”

Threadbox has evolved over the years and before long the pair were making apparel for local businesses. Business growth has also enabled Kyle to leave his city-based job and join the company full time, bringing with him 15 years experience in the apparel and branding industry. “It’s an added edge to our offering, along with clothing we are doing plenty of branding too - we love making companies look rad,” says Kyle. “Customers approach us wanting everything from branding, websites, clothing, through to vehicle signage. It’s cool to be across the full picture and see finished products come to life. Seeing the value it brings to businesses is awesome.”

Kyle and Ali love what they do, and spending their days together is a massive bonus! Their customer base has grown significantly, from Auckland to Whangarei and beyond. Operating a stall at the Mangawhai Tavern Market is still very important to them both, “it’s really personal to interact with our local customers and see first-hand the enjoyment our clothes provide. We love sharing our creativity with so many people,” says Ali.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW… WORDS
“It’s amazing what you can do with a rectangle.” And I am amazed as I stand inside Wendy and Neville’s beautiful, rectangular home tucked away in Grange Street. I have always been a great admirer of a simple shape, well-positioned for the sun, and elegantly finished. This house epitomises that aesthetic. Wendy describes the style of the house as country rustic, and the lush wooden floors certainly emphasise that feel. “We really wanted the French oak,” she tells me. “It was an expensive indulgence but it’s so beautiful. The finish is called ‘skipped’, which means it is slightly uneven, so it gives the look and feel of an authentic, old floor.’ The country house feel is continued with the use of rough-sawn pine for the walls and ceilings, which are painted white throughout. The high gable ceiling and white interior give the house a lovely sense of space and light. Wendy and Neville designed the buildings themselves, and Neville built it all with the help of Scott Yearbury and his team. What really creates the country rustic feel, however, is the beautiful interior finish incorporating Neville’s cabinetry skills and Wendy’s passion for interior design. “Neville is very clever with his hands and all of the cabinets, cupboards and other skillful touches

are his bespoke work.” I can’t resist opening and closing a few of the cupboards and drawers, and there is the enormously satisfying heft and sound of well-made wooden furniture. The house also features an amazing array of items from Wendy’s long-stored, now displayed, collection of antiques, bric-a-brac, collectibles and other elegant bits and pieces of art/furniture. Blending and mixing different styles, textures and time periods is Wendy’s forté, and making it work is a challenge at which she has excelled. “I love the scullery – the rustic, natural-timber, chunkiness of it,” Wendy declares. “It’s also the place where I can finally display my treasures that have been stored in Mum’s attic for 20 years!” she laughs. As we stroll through the house, recycled kauri benches, desks and work surfaces appear here and there, as do ornate cast-iron shelf supports and stands. There is a feature wall that uses kauri ceiling boards from one of the oldest boarding houses in Auckland. A large, antique stained-glass window fits seamlessly into the new surfaces around it. It’s a scrumptious combination of museum and modern build, and I like it. Heading outdoors, Wendy shows me the garage with a B&B unit on the sunny side, the young
LONG
orchard, and Neville’s giant workshop from which the amazing bespoke furniture, cabinets and artworks appear. This also has a small, attached sleep-out, with an additional bathroom that features a tub with a view. Luxury! “We fell in love with the site straight away,” Wendy tells me. “It was nice and flat at the top, and then gently slopes down to the stream and bush.” They built a picnic table at the tranquil niche by the stream, where it gets the late evening sun, and it is a favourite spot for the couple to take dinner and a bottle of wine. Wendy tells me that the build went quite quickly and smoothly, once they got going, but she doesn’t really enjoy the process.”While building can be stressful at times, I have enjoyed the process and love the designing aspect. This has been my ninth build/renovation and may be the last!” It’s an amazing combination of Wendy and Neville’s talents, and the attention to detail has resulted in a beautiful, character-filled home in a very peaceful and inviting location. debbie@maximise.co.nz www.maximise.co.nz/house-for-sale/101-grangestreet-snells-beach-max10264

BRICK BAY WINERY Brick Bay’s authentic extra-virgin olive oil is hand-picked from their estate grown olive trees then pressed locally. The result is an oil, green-gold in colour with a vibrant complex aroma, intense fruity, peppery layers and a lingering finish. Tasting is always available at the Glass House and bottles are available to purchase from the Foyer and on their website. 17 Arabella Lane, Snells Beach www.brickbay.co.nz
COLD OFF THE PRESS What is extra virgin olive oil? It is the highest grade of olive oil, with the free fatty acids (oleic acid) below 0.8%. In addition it must be free of taste flaws such as mustiness and rancidity, possess good olive fruitiness and some level of pepperiness and bitterness. The health benefits of EVO are many – the rich antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties that are central to the famed healthy Mediterranean diet. With an abundance of local olive oil producers right here on the Matakana Coast we are spoilt for choice, so keep on buying local!
DUCK CREEK ROAD OLIVE GROVE Seven times medal winner Duck Creek Road Olive Grove is located in a lush natural valley, and is personally operated and harvested by Derek and Sally Holland who have been involved with olives since the mid 1990s. TEA AND TARTÉ Tea and Tarté is based in Mangawhai and specialises in Custom Cakes, Tarts and Desserts. Owner Louisa started the business by chance when friends tasted and saw her children's birthday cakes asking her to create one for their children. Word soon got out and she was being recommended in the greater Mangawhai area. "The business has grown quite quickly! I have made orders for people from Auckland to Keri-Keri. From wedding, birthday and gender reveal cakes to bridal showers and fully customised wedding dessert tables,” says Louisa. “It’s an absolute passion of mine and I get such joy from making not only a beautiful cake for someone's special occasion but they also taste delicious!” www.facebook.com/cakedmangawhai www.instagram.com/teaandtartekids

LOTTIE’S SOUL FOOD DEPOT WORDS
“If I can make a difference in people’s lives, I’ll put it out there on the plate. The food looks beautiful because that’s my passion for what I do. It oozes my philosophy of wellness. You feel energised the moment you look at it.” Charlotte Branson, a.k.a. Lottie, has been producing platters of food for clients for two years now, but has taken it to business status in the last six months with ‘Lottie’s Soul Food Depot’. Her moto…”Nourish to Flourish! I know the difference it makes in people’s lives when they eat what their body requires. I’m forever planting and foraging,

and scrounging in people’s gardens. The biggest thing is working in season and sourcing locally,” says Lottie. There is a strong mermaid theme running through Lottie’s offerings – Mermaid Angel Platters, Mermaid Graze Tables and Mermaid Canapés, as well as Passionista Salads. “I love the idea of the beach lifestyle and mermaids. They are a real passion of mine.” Before starting work on her platters, Lottie likes to talk to her clients in order to get a sense of their style. “I create as I go and there is an artistic
element, along with passion and love. I’m into wholefoods, soul foods and plant-based foods. I am strong on veganism, dairy-free and glutenfree, but I’ll work with what clients want.” Lottie’s grazing tables are beautifully presented and captivating. “Guests will stand there staring because they don’t want to mess it up,” she laughs. “I start out by putting all the food on the table, and then I just begin creating until it comes together. It’s very organic and intuitive.” And what fun to be able to order your food by the metre! “My favourite saying is, ‘fling it all together’,”
Lottie tells me, but the photos of her work on her Facebook page are beautiful and seem more controlled. She obviously has a great eye for quality and presentation. Lottie’s Soul Food Depot is part of a grand plan for its owner. “My goal is to make it a bigger business, but to not get trapped in a kitchen. I’m planning on buying an old bach at Omaha, I’ll do it up and add an upstairs area which will become ‘Lottie’s Loft’, my wellness hub.” Lottie’s Loft will host women’s wellness mornings which might include pilates, yoga, paddle boarding, surfing, personal and wellness coaching and more. Included in that will be advice on how
to bring wellness to people’s lives with food. “I’ll show people how to put together nutritious smoothies, Buddha bowls and that sort of thing. I’ve had this idea of a wellness hub for a long time and it’s just a matter of fitting together the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle.” A visit to Lottie’s Facebook page will offer an introductory visual feast, and I recommend you follow up with nourishment for the body and soul.

to the tip last year. It felt great!” He’s galvanised by the memory of this epic paring-down and phrases bounce out of him. “I’m not trying to be provocative, I don’t have a narrative; your relationship with my work is your own.”
Peter and his partner Chrisse’s place is just north of Kaiwaka, the legacy of permaculture guru and heritage seed-saver Kay Baxter. “Yeah, the gardens were pretty daunting at first,” says Peter. “But Chrisse’s a natural, and I just plug away.”
He’s largely self-taught as an artist, but took some life-drawing classes with renowned art teacher Matthew Browne. Peter was worried about his rather shaky hand and wavering lines, but when Matthew stood back and said, “I love that line!” he began to relax and see potential.
Peter is an avid traveller and until now has never lived in one place for longer than two years. He’s painted prolifically wherever he was, but now, somewhat settled in this small paradise, the work is pouring out of him. He’s doing very well too, with a couple of solid awards behind him and national and international sales.
He is Tauranga-born but Auckland-bred. In the sixties the family lived in the grounds of Dilworth school, where his father taught. Peter showed early promise for a literary calling, winning a national writing prize at 11, and went to Auckland Boys Grammar out of zone from Papatoetoe. In his late teens, home was pre-gentrification Parnell – “it was the beginning of punk in NZ,” he says. Peter left NZ at 17 to surf with an older brother in France. Coming home at 20, he job-hopped (including a stint in the world of fashion) till he
He fears being influenced by the work of others, but allusions to McCahon, Basquiat and Bacon are inevitable. Peter’s obscure, often deleted, sometimes religious texts, the jagged line and colour, the twisted, truncated bodies and flayed heads makes for challenging and often disturbing work, but it draws you in like a fish on a line. “My two favourite quotes are ‘a poem is never finished, only abandoned’ – Paul Valery, and ‘kill your darlings’, from Bill Bernbach. JUST KEEP SWIMMING PHOTOS
Kowhai Swimming Club was founded in the mid-1970s from the original ‘Build the Pool’ committee. It was formed to run the pool outside of school hours, offering local children the opportunity to improve their techniques and become great swimmers. The club is based at the Mahurangi College pool off Woodcocks Road. The 25 metre pool is heated all year round and is just about to go through an upgrade this April making it a great facility for the club. Kowhai are still lucky enough to have two of the original club members, Dave and Mary Starr, as club patrons who are still actively involved. In the early 1990s when the pool became heated, the club started its transition to an all year round swimming club and through the efforts of the long term coach, Jill Fayerman, started to become a regular podium placer at Auckland and New Zealand championships. They also have Jade Mulisumasealii, who has been with the club for six years, started as a ‘Learn to Swim’ coach and now

coaches our beginners and entry level competition children. The club recently fielded its biggest team ever at the Junior Nationals held at the Millennium Stadium in Albany. These meets are about having fun with a competitive edge as the Kowhai swimmers are tested against some of the best junior swimmers in the country. 80% of the races Kowhai swimmers entered were personal bests, while a number of Kowhai swimmers achieved top ten placings in the events. The club also took one of their largest medal hauls at the Auckland Junior Championships, with Ryan Hewertson gaining bronze for his 200 meter freestyle; Sienna Morrison attaining silver in the 200 meter individual medley, bronze in the 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter butterfly and Siina Cooke winning gold in 50 meter breaststroke. The club caters to children aged from seven to seventeen years and a variety of abilities: from those just graduated from the ‘Learn to Swim’
program to nationally competitive swimmers. Swim training is after school Monday to Friday and session times are 45 minutes for beginners progressing to one hour and then on to two hours. Depending upon level, swimmers may train from one to three sessions per week. The club also offers adult lane swimming Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for those wanting to swim uninterrupted lengths and improve their fitness. The club is also introducing a new class from term two for adults to improve their swimming technique from 5.30pm-6.00pm.

HAPPENINGS
‘ALLO ‘ALLO “Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once.” Warkworth Theatre is proud to launch their 2019 Season with the stage show of the classic 80s TV show ‘Allo ‘Allo, playing from 16-24 May at the Warkworth Town Hall. This show, like the TV programme, is a comedy, mainly set in René’s Café in Nouvien, France with café owner Rene struggling to hide a valuable painting from his good customers, from the German army and handling the pressure from the French Resistance to blow up Hitler. Amongst the props there are bombs disguised as cheeses, Knockwurst sausages and an inflatable Hitler.
Amelia Meineke, Dave Morgan, Dianne Morgan
The cast is made up from locals living in the Mahurangi area and Director, Rosie Hutchinson has been impressed with their dedication to the show. “The enthusiasm and work that the entire cast and crew have put into the show has been amazing. Replaying all those familiar lines from the show has been great fun for all involved and we are now putting the finishing touches into our performance.” Following the restoration of the Warkworth Town Hall, Warkworth Theatre were able to re-establish themselves and have grown to over 50 members who are both actors and backstage. You can buy tickets online for the show or join the group by visiting their website. Tickets are also for sale at Warkworth’s Hart’s Pharmacy, Mahurangi Matters Offices, Warkworth Town Hall and Woody’s Winners in Wellsford. 16– 24 May, Warkworth Town Hall
