RAY WHITE MATAKANA CELEBRATES OPENING AT VIVIAN GALLERY The recent opening of Black Group Realty’s Ray White Matakana office felt like coming home for owners Heather Walton and Mark Bycroft, who have close ties with the community. They, along with long-time local and award-winning Ray White salesperson Sue Hatton, hosted the October opening at the Vivian Gallery. As the gallery is part of Sue’s superb new listing at 39 Omaha Valley Road, the synergy was perfect. The function included an exhibition of works by Evan Woodruffe with excellent locally produced wine and food on hand for invited guests.

A Place For Everyone

In March 1999, Thomas de Thierry (Ngati Whatua) of Te Hana had a vivid dream which he would share at every marae hui and whanau get-together until, as he says, “everyone was sick to death of hearing about it!” Words Kathy Hunter

Te Hana twenty years ago was not a happy place. Unemployment was high and problems with drugs, alcohol, and gangs were rife. But Thomas had dreamed of the beautiful pa of his ancestors, of being greeted by kaumatua in korowai, happy children, a river with waka and a carpark full of buses. “It was pretty weird all right,” he acknowledged. “But I kept talking about it until one day this Pakeha woman came to me and said ‘I’ll help you, Thomas’.” That woman was Linda Clapman, then a partner at architects Swan Railley Clapham, and she also had a vision for the future of Te Hana. In 2002, the council voted unanimously to gift them ten acres of reserve land on SH1. They set up wananga (schools) to teach construction, horticulture, painting and decorating, carving, weaving, te reo and computer skills, while the ambitious plans continued for a tourist village which would employ as many local people as possible. In 2010, Te Ao Marama marae opened to the public. The wharenui (meeting house) and wharekai (dining room) were finished, along with a replica 17th century Māori village, complete with raupo whare, manuka palisades and 9m-high pourewa (lookout towers). By 2012, cruise ship visitors were arriving in busloads. Thomas de Thierry’s vision was complete. That year, the Albertland 150th celebrations welcomed 500 guests and the Māori

Wearable Arts awards were established. Relationships were developed with Breast Screen Aotearoa, anti-family violence hui were happening and WINZ began to invest in local rangatahi (youth). They had attracted over 50 stakeholders, both local and national.

“We’re prioritising maintenance and upgrades now – and we’ll be ‘dressing’ our wharenui with carvings and artworks. It’ll be the only one within the Te Uri O Hau rohe (area) to do so within the last 150 years!” she smiles proudly.

The Auckland University Equity Award was bestowed for advancing Pacific and Māori cultures, and Linda Clapham, CEO of Te Ao Marama, received the UN World Scroll of Honour for her work in developing sustainable communities.

Te Ao Marama is hosting Friday night markets this summer, alternating every two weeks with the Wellsford Community Centre. There’ll be food trucks, arts and crafts, bric-a-brac and clothes stalls, an open mic, hip hop for the teens and of course, a hangi.

Linda retired in 2014 for a bit of a breather, but now she’s back. A re-structure in October refocused on education and creating employment opportunities. However, COVID dealt Te Ao Marama some harsh blows. “We had back-to-back event bookings for 2020,” says Linda. “Our Matariki events were cancelled, as was our contribution to Auckland’s Elemental Festival.”

Free te reo classes for every level happen on Monday evenings at 5.30pm – just turn up. Schools are welcomed for cultural experiences including powhiri, poi, haka and waiata. “Te Ao Marama is fantastic for events, from special whanau celebrations to team building conferences,” says Linda. “We can easily cater for 120, and sleep 70 on the marae with mattresses and fresh linen provided.”

Over lockdown Te Ao Marama emerged as a key emergency responder, able to make and distribute over 500 frozen meals to vulnerable locals thanks to a Ministry of Social Development grant. The team also helped with the Auckland border during the recent supercity lockdown. The Māori principle of manaakitanga (hospitality) is powerful and most marae are uniquely positioned to feed and house many at short notice. Linda’s focus has pivoted to practicalities.

She has a glint in her eye when talk turns to the future. “In 2021, we’ll be ready to show everyone on Waitangi Day, and at Matariki, just what Te Ao Marama is capable of. Watch this space!” For news and updates visit their Facebook page. www.facebook.com/TeHanaTeAoMarama 317 State Highway One, Te Hana

Northern Exposure Words Kathy Hunter

This September, the true story of an Alaskan serial killer hit number one on Netflix in the US, seven years after it was made. It stars Nicholas Cage and John Cusack, and the film’s Kiwi writer and director is now living with his family just outside Matakana. Scott Walker is tall with kind eyes that light up as his partner Minna arrives home – a punk pixie with purple lipstick and wild bleached hair (“I’m growing a mullet!” she says gleefully). Their two boys, Sebastien and Leonardo, gallop through the house with a new puppy. They came back late last year to visit family and renew their US visas before heading back to Palm Springs, but COVID stranded them here – and they couldn’t be happier. Scott grew up at Bethells Beach. High school years were turbulent, but he found Selwyn College “the best place to be rebellious”. By 17 he was working at TV3 placing ads; at 20 he’d travelled in Europe and was working in advertising in London. Transferred to M&C Saatchi in Sydney, he met Minna. “I walked in and spotted her immediately... eventually I wore her down,” he grins. The pair worked together in Hong Kong, then Paris, where Minna used her fluent French (gained during earlier study at the Sorbonne), and back to London. “It was the late nineties and the internet was kicking in,” Scott says. “I realised everything was about to change, so we started a new consultancy, specialising in brand vision for new tech.” Scott was 27; they began with the global launch of Xbox. The bank was happy, but Scott wasn’t. At a

weekend film course, he had an epiphany: he needed to write a movie. Within a few months they’d closed the company and moved from London to a tiny bach on Banks Peninsula, where Scott taught himself scriptwriting and Minna, a musician who’s worked with Grammy-award winning producers, immersed herself in her craft. “Everyone thought we were mad,” says Scott. “But Minna and I are always like, ‘what’s the next adventure?’” Scott wrote a ‘Deliverance’ style, teenagersstalked-by-hunters thriller, but when a friend read it, she said, “This story exists – it’s happened.” Scott’s research uncovered an Alaskan serial-killer news story which rapidly had him obsessed. In the early eighties, Robert Hansen, a quiet baker from Anchorage, kidnapped and murdered at least 17 young women. Cindy Paulson, then 17, managed to escape. And Alaskan detective Glenn Flothe, with Cindy’s help, finally brought Hansen to justice. “Glenn had been approached by other directors but they all wanted more sex, blood and torture. I wanted respect for the victims – there are millions of homeless ‘throwaway youth’ on the streets because it’s safer than being at home.” Scott thinks this is why, decades later, Glenn Flothe chose the Kiwi to tell the story. Information-gathering was overwhelming – transcripts of Glenn’s interviews alone were the size of two phone books. Scott found producers who wanted big guns for the roles; surreal memories for Scott include hearing Nicholas Cage’s iconic voice outside

a meeting room just before they first met and having a first ‘casual’ coffee with John Cusack. Vanessa Hudgens was the standout in over 80 auditions for Paulson’s role. At the pre-production dinner for the cast in Anchorage, Minna (whose music features in the film) remembers, “I had to drop a napkin so I could catch Scott’s eye and whisper, ‘Holy f@#*! This is happening!’” ‘The Frozen Ground’ launched to a rapturous reception in 2013, but its production company, Lionsgate, went through a merger and in the ensuing kerfuffle, the film missed its planned nationwide release. However the September 2020 Netflix US release took it straight to number one and over 100 million people have now watched it. “It’s amazing to finally see everyone's hard work validated,” Scott says, but he’s had little time to enjoy the film’s success. He’s working on several scripts, including one for NZ author James T. Guthrie's book, ‘Bullseye Bella’, about a 12-year-old darts prodigy who competes in Las Vegas to win $2M prize money for her autistic brother’s education. “It’s fun, empowering and uplifting for kids, and the world needs more of that.” He’s also in talks over a biopic on an unrevealed NZ icon, while casting a romantic comedy in LA over Zoom. And the couple are working together on both a monster comedy film and an all-girl, animated action TV series. It’s a breathless schedule. But now that summer’s coming to the Matakana Coast, hopefully this all-action family will get a chance to relax.

It's All About the Ride Life is for living and great roads are for riding. That’s a sentiment that comes across a lot when you’re talking to Lance and Sally at Open Road Motorcycle Tours. Down a quiet country lane in magical Mangawhai is a tour company that is just a little bit different.

Riding a motorcycle through New Zealand is a unique experience and one that Lance and Sally are keen to share with others. Exploring the road less travelled is something this couple makes a point of discovering, and riding their own backyard is always a pleasure. “I never need an excuse to jump on the bike,” says Lance, and if the opportunity arises he’s more than keen to get on the road. “Who wouldn't enjoy riding through New Zealand, we feel extremely lucky to be able to showcase our beautiful country in such a unique way.” Whether guided or self-guided, all Open Road Motorcycle Tours are about enjoying touring NZ in style. “We want our guests to come away with great memories, new friendships and the desire to return, to see more of our great country. really believe that you'll start the ride as our clients and finish it as mates.” says Sally. “It’s all about supporting local businesses, giving guests a unique and memorable trip and having a bloody good time.” They love to get out and support local businesses and will often take their clients on a tiki tour round their favourite haunts before a tour starts. A typical day trip might take them off the main road to Port Albert for some of the best fish and chips around, or up over the Brynderwyns to Waipu for a spot of lunch by the beach at Cove. Then riding the back roads through Mangawhai south again with a final detour along the valley to the Cheese Café at Puhoi for a quick ice cream on the way back to their hotel.

Lance says, “We take our clients on some of the best riding roads in the country. They’ll experience unique glimpses of another, moreremote New Zealand, where the traffic is light, the scenery breathtaking and the road is their own. Wherever possible we like to get away from the main roads and ride the smaller quiet country roads, stay in smaller boutique style hotels and indulge in delicious local food and wine. It’s a recipe for a great road trip.” Follow them on Facebook or Instagram, or check out the range of tours by visiting the website. www.openroad.nz hello@openroad.nz

Alpaca Farm Experience 2008 was an important year for Pav and Mark Stacey. They both fulfilled their dreams when they moved to a lifestyle property near Waipu. Mark was able to design and build a passive solar, eco friendly house and indulge in his many hobbies, and Pav filled the paddocks with adorable alpacas. The sunny north facing house is built from lightweight blocks made from cement, pumice and shredded timber that keep the house cosy and warm in the winter and refreshingly cool in the summer. Solar panels provide most of the power needed and the septic system is a worm farm. One end of the house is self-contained farmstay accommodation where guests can relax in the sun on the patio and look across the pond to alpacas grazing in the paddock. The couple run an Alpaca Farm Experience

appealing to men, women and children. The tour starts with a look at the 1922 Stanley Steam car that Mark is restoring and hopes to have running soon. There is also an opportunity to have a look at the electric farm bike and car.

of these unique animals with other people.

The experience includes a stroll through part of the 15 acres of beautiful covenanted bush behind the house. Along the way Mark entertains the group with some interesting facts about the native trees found on the property including some impressive Kauri and Totara. Emerging from the bush, guests find themselves in one of the alpaca paddocks which is also a home for beehives during the summer months.

so parents can be guaranteed of snapping

The highlight of the tour is always hand feeding the alpacas. Pav is passionate about her alpacas and loves to share the pleasure

These gentle creatures with their huge eyes and long eyelashes are very curious and love to have people around especially if they happen to have a handful of alpaca nuts. They are especially good with small children, some extra special photos of this unique experience. The tour ends with a visit to the barn where the fleeces are stored after shearing, as well as washed and carded fibre. Alpaca fleece is exquisitely soft and lustrous and if you are lucky there will be some of Pav's hand made nuno felted scarves in stock to purchase. 71 Arcadian Lane, Waipu www.kandiah.co.nz

King of the Ding Words Luke Williamson

‘Small kine’ is pidgin English used to describe something small or a small amount. Daniel Hawes, owner of Small Kine Ding Repairs, picked up the term during his time in Hawaii where pidgin is commonly used amongst the local surfers. “I lived in Hawaii for three seasons and a good friend of mine who lived there was shaping surfboards, and he challenged me to make my own board.” Daniel took up that challenge when he got home to New Zealand and, subsequently, ended up with all the gear for fixing damaged surfboards. When his friends found out, they started approaching him for ding repairs and the business snowballed from there. “The irony is that I get really busy fixing dings when the surf is up and I miss out on going surfing myself!” Small Kine Ding Repairs offers proper colourmatching, painting and restoration for a

professional finish, a significant step-up from backyard repairs. “I’ve had periods when it has been stressfully busy and other times when it has been stressfully quiet. I’m learning to make the most of the quiet patches,” muses Daniel. He started the business in July 2019 with Veera Kaikkonen, who is co-founder and part-time helper. They began in the shed at their home but have now moved to Shed B9, 194 Molesworth Drive. “We’ve got two rooms so I can separate the dusty work from the resin work, there is better temperature control and I have more space for bigger boards,” Daniel explains. The flow of work is very swell-dependent, Daniel tells me. “When there’s a good run of surf, there’s a good run of repairs to do. But Covid has had an effect on us because a lot of my repairs would be Aucklanders coming

up here to surf, and stay for weekends or holidays. With the lockdowns, they’ve all had to stay home.’” Small Kine Ding Repairs has a pick up point at Megasurf in Whangarei and, having identified a gap in the market, is aiming to expand further north over the coming year. Another service Daniel offers is restorations of vintage surfboards. “I like to fix any damage on the board and make it water-tight but keep the ‘aged’ character of it. If it's an old board and I think it should still look like an old board.” Daniel also runs summer skate lessons at Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) so it is lining up to be a busy summer. “I hope so,” he laughs, “but... it would be nice to have some time to go surfing as well.” www.facebook.com/smallkinedings www.instagram.com/small_kine_ding_repairs

Tips for the Perfect Sourdough Ringawera Bakery makes Sourdough 362 days a year and loves it! Why? Because it is challenging and it tastes great. Patrick from Ringawera has the experience of making hundreds of thousands of individual loaves and shares a few simple tips to help you on your journey to a perfect sourdough.

• If you don’t already have a starter, look up a recipe online or visit your local baker and ask for a bit of their starter. I personally am happy to give it. • Don’t get hung up on what style it is. We don’t have New York Sourdough in Aotearoa, we have Matakana or Ti Point, or Snells Beach Sourdough. Your home has natural yeasts that make your own sourdough unique. • Importantly! Set your routine and stick to it...and then be flexible! • It might take you a while to figure out what works best for you, but once you have a pattern stick to it. It is ok to store your starter in the fridge, but it needs time to ‘come back to life’ at room temperature. Seasonal temperature changes will also alter your plan. • Find a good quality strong flour. Sourcing a flour that works for you is not easy. If you want organic, then accept that the flour is expensive and is not easy to work with. • Bake your bread in a casserole dish with a lid (Dutch Oven/Camp Oven). This will give you a texturally satisfying crust.

There are many good YouTube tutorials, or if you are old-fashioned like me, get hold of a good bread book. I am happy to make recommendations. Ringawera is open daily 7am-4pm at 17/2 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana. For orders visit their website. www.ringawerabaker.co.nz bakery@ringawerabaker.co.nz

Caring for your Chickens ‘Happy Chicks’ started from a commitment to animal welfare and a love of great tasting, quality eggs. After investigating different styles of free range egg farms, owners Jeannie and Richard Walker discovered that sadly not all free range eggs are produced by hens that are free to roam in nature. “We also found some amazing examples here in New Zealand that inspired us to create the best! So at our farm we have created an environment where our hens can run in the sun, shelter in the rain, dust bathe in sand, throw worms around and all that fun stuff that happy chickens like to do.” The Happy Chicks live on ten acres of rolling green pastures in Magical Mangawhai, where the girls are free to roam, graze and forage all day on bugs, grubs, worms and grass. They have extra-large, warm and dry hen houses providing them shelter, with perches and private nesting boxes. “The Happy Chicks do all the hard work, and

we help keep them safe and healthy. It is the least we can do, considering how they reward us with such a delicious premium product,” they tell us. Here are some top tips to help you have your very own happy chicks! Hens love to be with their flock, they are very social animals who love fresh water and fresh food! Shelter from wind, rain and sun is especially important. The shelter is where they will run to when they see a bird flying overhead or feel threatened. Trees are ideal for them to hide under or awnings by their coops. Moving their home across the pastures frequently will keep their coops fresh. By revolving the grazing periods and spaces, all the goodness from the chicken poop and the scratchings helps rejuvenate the soil and

pasture for sustainability and a continuous pasture grazed home. They need perches to sleep on at night and private nesting boxes to lay their precious eggs. Hens love a good dust or dirt bath, and they will create their own with their strong feet and claws. Watch out for your gardens if they escape! With all these elements, egg production should be good, but it is also seasonal and changes with the length of daylight hours. Happy Chicks supply eggs to customers directly from their farm shop and via free delivery in the Mangawhai area. Find them on Facebook or visit their website for more information. contact@happychicks.co.nz www.happychicks.co.nz

More to Muscovado Mangawhai Food Store discovered Muscovado sugar, when ordering in new varieties of food for their online food store. “Our products are never tested on animals... we test them on our five children!” say owners Craig and Anneke.

molasses flavour complements gingerbread and cookies. It lends a caramelised flavour to ice cream, fudge, popcorn and when sprinkled on porridge with berries and nuts. Muscovado’s rich flavour also complements the bitter tone in coffee.

After some investigation, they learnt that Muscovado sugar is a natural, unrefined cane sugar, containing a high molasses content, and it adds delicious toffee flavours to sweet and savoury cuisine. Nutritionally it is superior to the often overused white refined sugar, still obtaining minerals from the molasses. With its wet sand texture, dark brown colour and rich deep flavour you will want to try this exceptional sugar in a variety of dishes.

“It appears by the enthusiastic feedback received from our extensive tests, that Muscovado sugar has won over our children and even teenagers' approval!” But, does it have the thumbs up from health conscious parents?

Muscovado sugar enhances the salty/smoky flavour in barbecue sauce, salad dressing, glazes or marinades for meat or tofu. It pairs well with olive oil, herbs and spices, before grilling or roasting. In baked goods, Muscovado sugar enriches chocolate brownies/cakes and the deep

When produced under regulated conditions Muscovado is nutritionally richer than refined sugars and retains more of the natural minerals in sugar cane juice, such as Calcium, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, Iron and Zinc to name a few. When you taste the rich deep flavour of Muscovado sugar, it will be hard to go back to its highly refined cousin. “But beware! It is so dangerously delicious,” they say. “The rule for sugar still applies, even with the additional nutrients in Muscovado sugar,

so hide it diligently and as with all sugar, use sparingly!” Mangawhai Food Store was created when Craig and Anneke found it challenging, as a growing family to access great quality food at real prices. Last year on a trip of a lifetime traveling around Europe with their children, they experienced many cultures and delicious local foods. Coming back to New Zealand inspired them to create an online food shop with quality food products, whilst also providing a platform for local growers to sell their produce. They have taken the work out of sourcing great local products by creating an easy ordering system with home delivery or pick up options. Mangawhai Food Store is your weekly shopping go-to for organic, bulk and whole foods and you’ll know where the food comes from and how it is produced, while using less plastic and generating less waste. 021 468 291 www.mangawhaifoodstore.co.nz

Guide to Foraging

There’s nothing quite like a global pandemic to force us to reexamine our relationship with the world. Maybe you took one look at that Level 4 supermarket queue of people in blow up dinosaur costumes and quickly reviewed the strength of your foraging game. Words Kate Arbuthnot

Our ancestral knowledge of the identification and preparation of wild plant foods has sadly been lost from everyday life. Perhaps the one positive thing to come out of Covid has been the resurrection of old ways and wisdoms, and (for some) the shift back to a simpler way of life. Weeds, it seems, are our new best friends... the unsung heroes of our garden. From a permadynamic perspective; weeds are soil healers, improving soil structure, adding fibre and organic matter and increasing the bioavailability of nutrients via their deep roots. From a health and wellness viewpoint, many plants growing wildly (let’s call them weeds) in your backyard have an astronomically high nutritional value as well as medicinal benefits. Brimming with chlorophyll (which contains magnesium), wild edibles have more Iron, more Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Omega-3 than their commercially cultivated counterparts, plus they’re free and they haven’t travelled thousands of miles to reach your plate! Makes sense then to consider introducing them into that green smoothie, salad or soup. Why not start by adding just two violet leaves to your smoothie, which have more

Vitamin C in them than an entire orange! Or a handful of vitamin rich Chicory. Young Dock leaves (yes! Dock.. it’s in the sorrel family) are a great source of Iron; Lamb's Quarters, Plantain leaves and Dandelion are all surprisingly good sources of protein, leaving their mate Kale for dust. Try adding them to your salads (young leaves are always best) or finely chop them with Parsley into your scrambled eggs. And don’t be put off by their bitter quality; that bitterness is what stimulates saliva and your digestive system. So off you go down this exciting new rabbit hole.. but take these golden rules with you: • If in doubt, leave it out! • Sample new edibles in small amounts to start with. • Know plants at their different stages of growth. • Know where plants like to grow. If you find something similar looking but growing in the wrong place, it can be a warning. • Leave mushrooms to the experts. • Respect the plant, harvest no more than a third to allow the plant to regenerate.

Being Smarter with Kitchen Waste With life busier than ever for most and layers of pressure coming from all directions, finding time to cook meals from scratch with minimum food wastage and all with great nutritional value can prove to be a challenge. Plastic Free Mangawhai recently ran a community workshop with recipes and tips to reduce waste in the kitchen. The trick with reducing kitchen waste is getting organised and getting into a habit. Set aside half an hour every few days to make your own crackers, bread, dips and yoghurt. Crackers and dips can be prepped in 5-10 mins if you are set up with the ingredients on hand.

Sundried Tomato Pesto 1 cup drained sundried tomatoes 1/4 cup sundried tomato oil 2 cloves garlic 1/4 cup toasted almonds Blend all ingredients until the desired consistency.

Seed Crackers 200g sunflower seeds

Variations

60g ground linseed

¼ cup nutritional yeast and 1 tsp onion powder

15g psyllium husk

2 tsp Italian herb mix

60g pumpkin seeds

100g sesame seeds ¼ tsp salt

½ tsp chilli flakes and 1 tsp curry powder

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees celsius. Line two large oven trays with baking paper or an alternative. Mix all ingredients in a bowl with 490ml of water and let stand for 15 minutes until it thickens into a slightly gluey consistency. Stir and spread the mixture evenly over the tray. Bake for one hour then remove from the oven and mark the cutting lines (a pizza cutter is good for this). Return the tray to the oven for 30-60 minutes depending on how thick the crackers are. Switch the oven off and leave in for at least another hour to dry out further. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

This mixture could be put in a jar as a gift with instructions to add water and recipe.

Talking to My Teen About Intimacy and Relationships? The most important thing we want our teenagers to learn about intimacy and relationships is what a healthy relationship looks like. Healthy relationships allow both people to feel supported, loved and connected, but still independent. This is probably the hardest thing for our young people to master, as when they are in love it tends to take up all their time! There is a good reason for this, and worth remembering when you talk to your teenagers about relationships. During adolescent years, the brain is developing at a super speed. This means that often the prefrontal cortex, which is where we weigh up risks and consequences, is out of action – usually just when it is needed! Therefore, teenagers don’t always make the best decisions, and it also means that their default brain is their emotional brain. This means they love deeply and break ups are hard.

out of a situation they are not comfortable in!

• Talk to your teenager about what a healthy relationship is, and importantly what it isn’t. How do we communicate with our partner, how do we tell them what our boundaries are and how do we respect another person’s boundaries?

• It is easy to slip into a ‘don’t’ lecture when we talk to our teenagers. Try to remove the word ‘don’t’ and instead focus on healthy relationships, and what we can do to make sure they are both respected and safe. This is where we can talk about sexual safety, contraception, consent, sexting, alcohol and drugs, and what to do if they are not comfortable in a situation and need help.

• Let them know your expectations of them regarding relationships and intimacy. Interestingly, research shows that when parents talk to their teenagers about their expectations, and if they are reasonable, they often try to meet these expectations. It also allows them to blame you if they need to get

• Finally, do not freak out! Relationships in adolescence are part of human development, and the aim is to grow our teenagers into healthy and fulfilled adults. Like everything else they are ‘trying out’ in adolescence, by having open and calm conversations, you become their go to person - for the good and

The Best of Blends The Good Blend skin care is inspired by nature, creating products for a more wholesome lifestyle. Phillie, the creator of The Good Blend, believes in the importance of unity between us and nature, and the importance of being conscious about what we apply to our skin. She has developed a wealth of knowledge about the beneficial ingredients nature provides and uses these ingredients in her hand-made clay and essential oil-infused body bars and oil rollers. The Good Blend product range provides benefits for the skin, mind, body, and overall health. The Good Blend body bars are made the old-fashioned way, using the cold process technique which has been around for centuries, (since 2800 BC to be exact). They are carefully designed with natural clays and essential oils, to provide a wide variety

of benefits. Made with coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, shea butter, and castor oil, each adding a different aspect to the soap, forming a lathery, moisturising body bar. Each blend consists of a pairing of essential oils and clay to optimise the intended benefits. For example, the Cleanse Bar is infused with lime, sage and cedarwood essential oils, which all have purifying and cleansing properties while aiding in clearing the mind and helping energy flow. The green clay aids in fighting acne and helps skin to heal from scarring while cleansing the skin from toxins. The essential oil rollers are packed with high-quality essential oils and diluted in avocado oil enabling safe application to the skin, to release the full benefits of these natural aromatic blends. These oils work together to improve brain function and give an energetic boost throughout the day; simply roll on the neck, wrists, or temples to let nature work its magic. Other blends include Tranquillity - to help with sleep; Balance - to help regulate hormones; Clarity infused with New Zealand Manuka oil to help centre and calm the mind. Breaking the Mould Photos Josie Gritten Photography

With an increasing global focus on sustainability it is good to know that aluminium is one of the world’s most recycled manufacturing materials. Oxley’s Furniture components come from foundries where this recycled aluminium is graded, mixed and calibrated into the correct aluminium alloy to make their exceptionally strong and durable furniture. “The environmental aspect of our business is very important to us, as we do everything possible to minimise our impact on the environment - including recycling most of our packaging materials,” say owners Pam and Martin Shead. Now Kaiwaka residents, they moved to New Zealand in 2004 having sold a successful furniture/kitchen company in the UK. Along with their three kids, they brought their much loved set of Oxley's garden furniture. “Over the years our original set of furniture has been admired by family and friends - now 26 years old and it still looks stunning.”

Styling Maddie Long

Seeing an opening in the market for high quality, enduring yet elegantly styled outdoor furniture, they decided to bring the Oxley brand to New Zealand. Oxley’s specialise in final construction and finishing, thereby being able to guarantee exceptional quality. For the castings, the molten metal is poured into sand moulds which have been shaped to form the original hand carved design. The metal cools in its own time and the sand mould is then broken (each mould can only be used once) to extract the new casting. Each casting is worked by hand until it is ready to be welded to another casting or profile. The profiles can be formed to create different frame shapes. Each item of furniture is thus built up slowly using many individual pieces until it is complete, making each piece unique. Done the Oxley’s way, it will last generations, and with an increasing trend to responsibly invest in quality, classic items rather than engaging in throw away products, you would

be looking at a lifetime of enjoyment from their pieces. All Oxley’s furniture comes with a comprehensive product warranty - a testament to years of manufacturing experience and the use of the best materials and techniques. Oxley’s extends a life long conditional warranty on the structural integrity of the furniture. After facing a challenging first year for the business, due to Covid-19, they are now displaying their furniture at the weekly Mangawhai Tavern Market and have a full schedule of shows and exhibitions lined up throughout the summer. With plans to exhibit at the North Shore Home and Garden show in November and involvement with the Mangawhai Garden Ramble weekend on 14-15 November they are excited to get customers setup for summer. A Beachside Retreat For Every Season Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

As anyone walking regularly on Omaha Beach will know – many of the sizable Omaha baches are sitting empty over

winter. This is not the case with this modern beachfront house.

The owners wanted to be able to use the

house all year round, so there is underfloor

heating throughout and double glazing. Two wood-burning fireplaces – including the

outdoor fireplace from the original house – make for a cosy winter retreat.

The house is one of few contemporary houses in what is often referred to as “old Omaha”. The four-bedroom home is single level, but has been raised to take advantage of the

panoramic sea views from every room. Its total footprint comes to about 450 square meters, including decks.

When the owners purchased the property back in 2003, it was a typical modest beach house with the original cedar cladding – complete with funky coloured joinery and an odd-shaped floor plan. Their intention was to renovate and expand the existing bach, but after having a closer look they realised it wasn’t just the floor plan and interior that was a bit tired – it also needed new piles, new cladding, and a new roof! “The footprint was not an ideal fit for the section either, so after much consideration, we made the big call to remove the original house and build a new house completely,” they say. Lindy Leuschke of Leuschke Architects and local builder Steve Brackenridge were engaged in the project. Together they

designed a solid, low maintenance, modern structure, and decided to raise it to take advantage of the ocean views. The owners wanted a simple beach-house. “Our lives are cluttered and busy at home, so the bach was to be a retreat,” they say. “And we wanted the building to blend in seamlessly with the landscape; we didn't want it to make a big architectural statement.” The beachfront sections at the northern end of Omaha Beach have a height restriction, so the architect designed a suitable lowprofile structure. They used honed concrete blocks and folded zinc for cladding. The zinc weathers to a natural patina that does not reflect the sun and tones in with the landscape. The owners wanted the ability to open the house up completely to the North and East,

while still being sheltered from the South and West. This was achieved with large sliding glass doors and outdoor decks in strategic locations. They also wanted to accommodate a lot of people, so on top of the four bedrooms, they added several ensuite bathrooms and even some bunk beds. To create internal privacy between adults and kids, they separated the two lounge areas on either side of the central kitchen with internal sliding doors. These can then be opened up for times when there’s a need for a larger space. The family has holidayed in the Omaha area for the past 25 years, and owned several properties around the area over time. This house has been their beloved family bach for the past 13 years, and it has played a major part in the childhood and teenage years of their children too. Omaha has featured throughout the various stages of the kid’s early life, they are now 20 and 24, so the family have enjoyed all of those growing years with the kids in the bach. Apart from the relaxed beach-side living, the family enjoy the easy get-away from their home on Auckland’s North Shore, as well as the local cafes and Farmers’ Market. They also relish the fishing, strawberries, watermelons, oysters, ice cream and all the other delicious local produce which the area has to offer. To view this property visit www.bayleys. co.nz/1170210. Tender closing date: Tuesday 24 November, 4pm (unless sold prior). Viewings by appointment only. Please contact the agents. Heirloom Creations In a tiny little cottage, tucked away on the side of her Snells Beach home, Brenda, of Zealous Design, creates beautiful handcrafted heirloom dolls and soft toy animals. In her day job, Brenda fixes computers, organises and administrates. At home, she organises her children, home and husband. But when she gets her precious ‘me’ time, she’s off to her sewing space to let her creativity soar. When Brenda was a child her mum taught her how to sew and she would dabble with clothes patterns she did not start sewing dolls until she had her own children. She had a precious rag doll from childhood, which she loved to pieces, now her daughter has that rag doll and is loving her in the same way. It got Brenda thinking about all the plastic dolls that are sold. How she never loved Barbies as much

as she loved her rag doll. What if she could create that same love for children today? Brenda started off googling rag doll patterns, tried a few free ones, bought a few patterns and eventually started designing her own and creating dolls that were uniquely her style. She is always tweaking her patterns and changing the faces because that keeps it fun and creative for her. Zealous Design is not a factory pumping out endless dolls, each doll Brenda creates is made with love, thought and care. Brenda loves to source materials locally where she can. One of her favourite materials to use is alpaca yarn from local alpaca farm, Gumtree

Gully. It makes the most beautiful doll hair, clothing and alpaca fleece can even be used as a natural stuffing. When she starts a new doll series, Brenda likes to sketch down her ideas first, and finds she is often inspired by her daughter. Creating dolls for different budgets is important to Brenda, so her range spans from simple dolls through to detailed larger ones. Flora Tondo - Just Keep Blooming Energetic splashes, washes and colourful smears contrasted with beautiful blooms make the Flora Tondo round flower paintings vibrantly original and attractive. Rebecca Barclay-Clist, the artist behind Flora Tondo is mostly drawn to strong colour, deliberate marks and defined form. Blooms that reminded her of family, friends and occasions is where her interest in the flower began. Four years ago, her first flora tondos were painted and included in her exhibition called ‘Intricacies and Intimacies’. She explains, “They were symbolic of women, both friends and family and significant moments where flora was used to delight in, celebrate or sympathise with”. Hydrangeas were paired with fond memories of her grandmother, while pansies reminded her of a dear friend who loved them and often remarked, saying, “their faces are just so happy”. These days her flora works exist more as decorative pieces in tandem with her fine art practice, which has a deeper conceptual base. She finds these a refreshing break and a balance between the

two avenues of her painting practice. Flowers can be symbolic, used as a metaphor or simply there to enjoy. They are glorious and have the ability to lead us away with their delicate shapes, textures and perfumes. While Rebecca recalls her grandmother and aunts all having green fingers, she says with tongue in cheek “a painted garden is the only garden I have successfully cultivated and maintained”, however, she hopes her viewers will be delighted and even swept away, by their own thoughts and connections to each bloom she paints. Rebecca says, “these have always added much needed positivity and moments of beauty in my life and that’s why I love painting them”. Her works are distinctive in style and have signature elements, like the distressed gold leaf edge and glossy resin layer. These

features appear to add yet another dimension to the already beautiful disc-shaped creations. Rebecca's Flora tondos have been exhibited in group shows and have sold locally in Northland and in other New Zealand galleries, reaching across Aotearoa, from Whangarei to Oamaru since she first started painting her round flora beauties. This year she is having a two-person exhibition titled ‘Ballad’ with fellow artist Tracey Christie. The show will be a symphony of colour, much like a summer garden, and will celebrate and champion beauty and femininity. Opening at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery on Friday 20 November, ‘Ballad’ will show for two weeks. www.instagram.com/flora.tondo floratondo.nz@gmail.com

Chaos Flower Local artist John Wright spent his childhood summers swimming and snorkelling in Leigh, so it is appropriate that his first solo exhibition will be there, at the foundation gallery, and has many works featuring surreal underwater creatures. “I’ve always loved the otherworldliness of being under the water and the alien-like creatures that live there,” he said. Otherworldly plants, animals and landscapes have always found their way into his work. “I like to create things that are familiar but strange to the viewer. It's so interesting as everyone sees the same image but will have a totally different interpretation. It remains unresolved as to what they have seen in a way”. The show is called 'Chaos Flower' in response to the mad year that has been. “Chaos Flower was the name of one of the pieces and it just seemed appropriate. I like to think we can find beauty in the chaos and, like a flower, the seeds of the new are forming in the centre." The exhibition opens at the Foundation Gallery in Leigh on Friday 13 of November 6.30 pm and the show will be up until mid-December. Instagram: @johnwrightartist ART

Comprising an Editor, Sales Rep, Designer and Stylist this diverse, all female team brings a vast array of experience with them, from all around the globe, injecting enthusiasm into each and every article, feature and edition. Junction also supports local creatives by engaging photographers and writers as contributors, and is dedicated to being a magazine run by locals for locals, whilst opening the doors to welcome visitors to our area from near and far. Of course gifting a magazine to the community every month comes at a cost, and Junction is incredibly grateful to those clients and small businesses who sponsor them to do so through advertising. Covid forced the closure of many publications, however with the continued support of the local business community and the readers, Junction is going from strength to strength. JUNCTION 5TH ANNIVERSARY

A Cleaner, Greener Way to Print Junction As Junction Magazine enters its sixth year in print, making choices to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly has become essential. Having social media and a website, plus an online edition are great ways to view the magazine but nothing beats holding a copy in your hands. Junction partners with Happy Printing Ltd and Webstar, a leading New Zealand provider who recognise their responsibility to make a real contribution to the sustainability of our industry and in turn our country. They have reduced

their landfill in Auckland to less than 1%, with an active programme in place to get to zero. With energy reduction and re-engineered heat recovery programmes in place, plus fuel efficient vehicles and an Auckland site that no longer requires Trade Waste certification (as it does not generate any Trade Waste), they are leagues ahead in their field. Junction Magazine has also just become accredited with: The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), a leading global alliance of national forest

certification systems, dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. This exciting news means that we are making real changes to the way we print and the impact we have on our environment. The paper Junction is printed on is fully compostable and recyclable, and we encourage our readers to reuse and recycle at every opportunity. www.junctionmag.co.nz www.happyprinting.co.nz

Strong Grass Roots The Waipu Rugby Squash Club was formed in 1875 and is one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand, with a strong connection to the Scottish and Maori roots that first formed the Waipu community. The grounds and clubrooms are situated a stones-throw from local businesses, boutique shops and various restaurants and café’s that line the quaint street leading through the town’s centre. There are various junior and senior Waipu rugby teams that represent the community – from U6 and U7 Rippa teams, through the grades to the U14 IMB team. The club wants to build on their junior and youth grades to keep the senior teams sustainable for the future. The club has two adult men’s teams – the Premier side plays in the Northland Premier Competition and the Reserves play in the Northland Premier Reserve Competition. Both the Premiers and Reserves won their respective competitions in 2019, and the Premiers went back to back for 2020, and won a tight final against another staunch rural club, Mid Northern – the bagpipes played long into the night after each of the victories! Waipu RSC also has a Golden Oldies team, ‘the Men in Kilts’, that play festival matches against other like-minded invitational teams – based on the social component of rugby after reliving the ‘old days’ for 80 minutes, that seem like an eternity for those who strap on the boots!

BLACK FERN MATAKANA Black Fern Lodge overlooks Ascension Vineyard and is perfect for bridal accommodations and celebrating special occasions. Featuring up to five bedrooms (four ensuites), large gourmet kitchen and entertaining areas, heated pool, covered BBQ area with a kitchen and fireplace, Sky TV and wifi. Accommodates 2-10 people in private luxury. Small events are welcome. 454 Matakana Rd, Warkworth 021 189 4242 blackfernmatakana@gmail.com www.blackfernmatakana.com

SPORT

The Waipu RSC has a very strong committee of volunteers – based on organising and coordinating junior, youth and senior rugby and squash, as well as junior, youth and senior touch competitions in the summer months. The club also has a strong connection to the Caledonian Society – this is the entity that owns the grounds and takes great pride in the Waipu community, and there is no better reflection of this than when the annual Highland Games are held on New Year’s Day at the grounds. There have been many challenges that all communities throughout New Zealand have faced due to COVID; but through this, it has shown the importance of community clubs like the Waipu RSC – these clubs are vital to the well-being of New Zealanders, young and old. www.sporty.co.nz/waipurugbysquash www.facebook.com/Waipu-Rugby-Squash-Club-222860637726513

Fish and Bread Sound System Words Carlie Blanchett-Burton

Picture the scene, a kiwi summer Sunday afternoon. The sun is shining, you’re surrounded by your mates and you’ve got an ice cold drink in hand. Life is good. There's a certain something in the air and it's not just a feeling. The sound of roots and reggae music is the sound of summer in New Zealand, and Fish and Bread Sound System are the ones serving it up. At the heart of the sound is the sound system itself and impressive two big stacks of speakers and substantial stack of audio gear. The sound system sure has a presence with its bass heavy sound. Tracks are mainly played on vinyl on a single turntable and include a full selection of reggae, deep roots, digital and dub. Vaughan Magnussen from Snells Beach is the man behind Fish and Bread Sound System.

He first started listening to roots and reggae and buying vinyl in the 1990s. In 2015 he attended a sound system event powered by the Lion Rockers sound system. “It was a real experience,” Vaughan remembers, “at one point everyone there was feeling the same thing. Everyone was smiling just about clapping each other on the back because we could all feel the communal vibrations and connection in that moment.” It was then that Vaughan knew he would build his own system. Sound systems originate from Jamaica and were developed in the 1940s as a way of sharing music with the community when there was no radio. This tradition emigrated to London and became part of the underground music culture there and

has spread worldwide. New Zealand has a small but incredibly keen sound system community. “Everyone was really encouraging and helpful. The feeling is really inclusive and uplifting just like the music.” Vaughan has words of encouragement for those who are keen to build their own system. “Just start building! I've just chipped away at it over a couple of years, using money I've made from hustling audio gear on the side. Persistence is the key!” Make sure you get along to one of Fish and Bread's regular gigs at the Leigh Sawmill Café so you can experience the bass heavy authentic sound for yourself. Follow on Facebook for news and updates. www.facebook.com/ fishandbreadsoundsystem

Smoke on the Coast 2020 Competition barbecue used to be the domain of late night pay TV in New Zealand. But since ‘Meatstock’ burst onto the scene in 2017 there’s been a steady increase in the frequency and spread of these fun and interactive competitions. Teams are required to cook between four and seven meat dishes over a 24 hour period and hand them in for judging by an assembly of both experienced and rooky judges. The top team is chosen from their best ‘hand-ins’ and are crowned ‘Grand Champion’ (or GC in this community). Prizes are presented for each category, which include pork ribs, chicken, lamb and brisket, the king of BBQ meats. In 2019 a new competition was launched in Whangaparaoa called ‘Smoke on the Coast’. This event was the first to broadcast the actual judging live to a wide YouTube

audience. Attended by 20 teams and 1500 members of the public, Smoke on the Coast was an instant hit. In 2020 the promoters of Smoke on the Coast are bringing their competition to Whangateau and hope to share the competitors love of smoking and barbecue with the local community. “Covid caused a re-schedule to December and also allowed us to add more teams and there's more families coming along too,” they tell us. “We have also gained sanctioning for the fastest growing food sport in the world 'Steak Cook-off Association' and Smoke on the Coast will be the deciding round for the 2020 NZ Barbecue Alliance and SCA season. This is the peak of the barbecue cooking worlds accolades to be decided on one weekend.”

The competition barbecue scene has come to life in Aotearoa. The local Barbecue Alliance Facebook page has over 37,000 Likes and there’s barbecue competitions every month. As with many events they cannot go ahead without significant logistical and financial support. The New Zealand Barbecue Alliance is well supported by Jack Daniels who lend their name to the national championship and Smoke on the Coast has added ‘Container Door’, the online retailer to their sponsors list. Container Door will be on-site for the event with a range of back-yard barbecues for the public to check out, have a ‘go’ on and potentially try top notch BBQ food from. 5-6 December, Whangateau Holiday Park, Whangateau.

Happenings LOCAL VOCALS CONCERT The Local Vocals Choir and friends are back again with a celebratory Christmas Concert, “LVC Unleashed!” After the challenge of lockdowns preventing the choir from singing together for much of this year, LVC are now rehearsing, singing songs that affirm and celebrate, and to welcome the Christmas season. They are excited to finally be able to share these songs with the community. As one of many community organisations that have felt a financial blow due to Covid-19, LVC are extremely grateful to receive funding from Foundation North, and Pub Charities, enabling them to bring this familyfriendly event to the community for free. Refreshments will follow the performance. Koha appreciated. Sunday 29 November, 3pm. Wellsford District Community Centre. www.facebook.com/singlvc | www.lvcwellsford.co.nz
