EXCLUSIVE MANGAWHAI SILK ON THE SAND WORDS
The stark contrast between the rugged coastline and the lush green fairways at Tara Iti golf course in Mangawhai has been described as ‘silk on the sand’. Tara Iti is an exclusive, private club modeled after equity golf clubs that are commonly developed in the United States. Jim Rohrstaff, of Legacy Partners, manages the memberships and real estate at the club. He’s a warm, easy-to-talkwith, likeable guy with a strong American accent. So, I decided to chance my arm and ask him what it takes to become a member of this invitationonly, exclusive club. “We want good people up here in Tara Iti. It’s

not about stature or wealth. It’s people you enjoy spending time with and would like to have a beer with. Our members must treat our staff with the same respect they would treat their friends and family.”
beauty of the coastline. Jim says members like to decompress and relax while at Tara Iti. Some are well-known personalities with very recognisable faces, but the club staff, mostly locals, respect their privacy.
Personally, I’ve never had much time for people who inflate their own egos by looking down on others and treating them poorly, but I’m blown away that the most expensive and exclusive golf club in the country also shares my ethos. The exact membership costs and client list are closely guarded secrets. Golf carts are not allowed on the course, so players must walk, taking in the natural
The club celebrated its two-year anniversary last month. Tara Iti is built on an 11-kilometer site and boasts eight member cottages, two luxury suites, a clubhouse, and nine independent homes currently under construction. Jim puts the rapid growth of the club down to three crucial factors: the golf course designer, Tom Doak; the Superintendent, CJ Kreuscher, who has the Midas

touch in transforming ‘sand into silk’; and the dedicated staff. “Our team is amazing. They cover a wide range of roles. CJ has 17 greens-keeping staff. Some of them had never held a golf club before, but he has trained them all to create one of the best playing surfaces in the country. We also provide work for independent contractors in the area, from plumbers and builders, to over 40 caddies.” Despite the exclusivity of a club that only takes members known and referred by existing members, the club has already reached over 50 percent of its total membership capacity. Jim says most members are from the corporate world, business people and entrepreneurs. One thing they all share, though, is a passion for golf. In local parlance, they are ‘Golf tragics’. “We don’t do any sales or marketing. We invited a few friends, and like attracts like. We have grown a membership of good people, organically. It’s happened faster than we anticipated.” The club has some members local to Mangawhai, and it is keen to support the area. Upon completion, residents were invited to an open day. Charity tournaments raise money to help protect New Zealand’s rarest breeding bird: the fairy tern or tara-iti. The tara-iti nest on the property, and the club actively supports the DOC rangers in their conservation work. The golf club’s general manager, Matt Guzik, and his team, help fundraise for many local charities, including the Surf Life Saving Club, by hosting charity rounds. Playing a round at Tara Iti is a well-soughtafter prize and comes with a hefty price tag. Graciously, all of the proceeds are gifted to local charities. It’s nice to know that an exclusive club with wealthy members from all over the world makes a concerted conservation effort, employs local residents and supports local charities. I’m betting that’s because of the policy of seeking out members that are “...good people… you’d like to have a beer with”. That delightful piece of refreshing brilliance is a hole-in-one! www.taraiti.com 71 Tara Iti Drive, Mangawhai 0975

small washtub in the bottom of the boat. If there had of been an emergency I would have become the Moses of the Hauraki Gulf!” Piers pulled his weight from a very early age. He clearly remembers ferrying guests between his parents boarding house in Vivian Bay and Sandspit, whilst still a boy of 10. He would stand atop an upturned beer crate to see over the helm. You would be hard pressed to find a skipper with more experience on these waters. It was a different time, but Piers laments the lack of respect shown by some kids these days. He says boredom is a dangerous thing, and therein lays the root of youth crime and disillusionment. He takes young offenders on the Norman Jean and encourages them to take a different path in life. For a while from in his mid-fifties he also got bored and started drinking heavily. “The doctors had never seen anyone with such terrible liver function results. I also had sclerosis and they didn’t think I’d make it through the night.”
He is now six years sober and puts the change down to having a strong inner spirit and wanting to see his grandson, Liam grow-up. His near miraculous recovery from liver cirrhosis? Well that’s thanks to his veterinarian. “I was in the vets and he had some stuff to treat animals with liver function problems. I said, right then, I’ll have a course of that. The doctors tested my liver last week and it’s good enough to transplant!” The many stories of Piers life are photographically documented around the cabin of the Norma Jean. He was a pioneer during the early days of using helicopters in the area and there is a photo of him kissing the ground after the fuel pump gave out and the engine stopped mid-flight. There’s also a photo of the wreckage from his first ‘solo flight’. “We left the chopper running and got out to reload, the Pilot went off up the hill and I could see it started to move! I jumped in and it bloody took off! I jumped out just before it flipped and crashed. I was inches away from losing my legs in the rotor blades.”
Piers is an avid environmentalist, running charters for scientists to monitor the health of the ecosystem, snorkelling trips, shark and stingray feeding, and bird watching expeditions. “The New Zealand storm petrel nesting season will start soon. I will have people from all over the world come here to see a bird that flew back from extinction in 2003. Honestly, when they see a storm petrel it’s like you or me winning lotto. They get so excited.” A day out never feels long enough when you begin to hear the tales of his stint in the navy, learning to drive in central Auckland after having lied about having a license, drinking Kawau Cocktails, (a mix of Methylated spirits, oysters and orange juice), fossil finds, NASA scientists, being measured up for his coffin after getting electrocuted in power lines opposite an undertakers! The list goes on, but you’ll have to book a trip on the Norma Jean to find out more about those epic adventures. www.normajeancharters.co.nz

ANTHONY MORRIS - A GLORIOUSLY IMPERFECT JOURNEY WORDS
REBECKA
BJELFVENSTAM
KEELING
A new exhibition invites you on a journey through half a century of creativity by Matakana pioneer Anthony Morris. It’s a journey from New Zealand to Africa and Europe, Asia and America - through successes, challenges and new beginnings. Anthony Morris is one of the best-known names in New Zealand pottery, as the co-founder and visionary behind Morris & James. The exhibition A Gloriously Imperfect Journey is the first time some of Anthony’s work will be shown in public, including painting, glass, bronze, wood, poetry and of course clay. The exhibition also marks the launch of a completely new body of work from Anthony Morris Studio. “Wherever you are with your work, you love what you're doing at that moment the most. The pieces I'm making now are the best I've ever made,” says Anthony. “I've always wanted to make small pieces that you can take with you if you go overseas. Sweet little things from New Zealand that you can be proud to take home. The glazes I use are made for beauty, not for hard wearing, or for things you'd use every day.” The exhibition has been curated by renowned glass artist Elizabeth McClure. Elizabeth has rented a studio from Anthony since 2014 and over time the two artists became friends. The idea of marking the 40th anniversary of Morris & James Pottery, and Anthony’s 50th year of creating, gradually evolved between them. “I came along a few years ago and started asking ‘have you ever shown this work?’ And Anthony said, ‘to very few’. We first planted the seed of an idea for the show about a year ago. Since then he’s made this whole exciting new body of ceramic work,” says Elizabeth. She found it a challenge to select exhibition pieces from Anthony’s vast collection. “He's been so prolific that there was way too much to choose from. I've tried to take just a few snapshots of different periods of work throughout the past 50 years,” says Elizabeth. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the Crete

collection from 2001. “One day, Anthony asked me ‘You haven't been to Crete, have you? Come here I want to show you something,’ and he opened a big sliding door into a dark shed and it was just the most amazing sight,” said Elizabeth. Anthony had been to Crete with his son, watching
the potters there working on their traditional wheels, and being as enthusiastic and energetic as he is, he came back and said, “I want to try that!” He set about making the pots, assisted by Ian Foote, who is now the head potter at Morris & James. Anthony has fond memories of throwing the unusually tall, bespoke Crete pieces.
“Looking back, I can remember that these pieces brought me an enormous sense of satisfaction. Even though they are completely wrong compared to what I was trying to do! Years ago, I just threw them in the storage room, closed the door and didn't go back until now,” said Anthony. “All of those pieces were just sitting there for fifteen years, waiting to be rediscovered - it was

like going into Aladdin's cave,” said Elizabeth. Starting up the pottery business in Matakana, with then wife Sue James, wasn’t the original plan. “We were moving back to Gisborne, because that's where I was born. My wife was from London, and as we flew into Gisborne on the plane she turned to me and said, ‘We're not going to stay here!’ So, within a week we were heading back up north. We decided that the best place for us was within a 100km of Auckland. We found the perfect clay here, and we loved it. The property was in a pretty
14
bad state - but that meant no one else wanted it!” said Anthony. Anthony sold the Morris & James business after a serious stroke in 2004, but he never stopped creating. “The shapes of the pieces become quite different when you only have the use of one hand. I can’t throw pottery any longer so there are no more mugs, but I can still make platters and other beautiful flat pieces. At first, I was a bit embarrassed. I thought ‘maybe I shouldn't be
selling these’ but then I learned that it's ok to make things that are imperfect, with hand marks. They look imperfect from most potters' point of view, but for me they are perfection. A glorious imperfection.” The exhibition A Gloriously Imperfect Journey – Half a Century of Making will take place from November 3 to December 10 in the Collection Room at Morris & James Pottery in Matakana. www.morrisandjames.co.nz 48 Tongue Farm Rd, Matakana

EXPRESS YOURSELF WORDS

This summer, if you find yourself wishing you could get out on the sea, visit the islands and go fishing, but you don’t own a boat, the answer has arrived in the form of Hauraki Express. With three modern, high-spec boats in its fleet, Hauraki Express offers everything you need in water taxi services, day trips, fishing charters, and more. Holly Thomas, Manager of Hauraki Express is preparing package trips for this summer that are designed to appeal to weekenders, holiday makers, commuters, explorers and fishing fans. “We can pick up guests from Sandspit or Omaha, take them over to Kawau to dine at Bon Accord Bar & Bistro or Kawau Beach House, and return home again, all for one easy package price,” Holly says. “Not drink-driving worries so you can just make the most of your night out.” Families or groups of friends might prefer a trip to a secluded bay to enjoy a picnic, watch for dolphins, swim, relax and have fun. Others will be interested in the new fishing charters with an emphasis on enjoying the experience of being out on the ocean for the day. “Dad and George know the Gulf inside out so they can find the fish! And then you can anchor up in a bay and cook it for lunch or take it home for dinner.” It’s a family-run business; father Peter, son George and daughter Holly. The result of a lifelong passion for boating, sailing, fishing, and just making the most of what the Hauraki Gulf has to offer. Skipper Nick Jones, who doubles as a lawyer in the city, ably assists the family. Hauraki Express has found a niche with day-trip explorers who use the service to visit the islands of the Gulf for walking, kayaking, bird watching, biking and even golfing adventures. “We pride ourselves on our new, beautiful boats that are a pleasure to be aboard,” Holly explains. “You are riding in style. They’re fast, convenient and there are no set schedules. We go when and where the clients want to go.” The only restriction is a minimum of five passengers but Holly can match you up with other

TEPEE ACCOMMODATION
The glamping movement is growing, and it’s not showing signs of slowing down. Around the world, you’ll find beautiful glamping destinations, each offering their own unique experiences. Glamping is a fusion of glamour and camping, where nature meets modern luxury. It is a way to experience the outdoors without having to sacrifice on comfort. Glamping can mean waking up in a yurt, residing in a treehouse or staying in a tepee... which brings us to a new venture on the Matakana Coast. Tepee is located a short five-minute drive from Matakana Village and less than ten minutes from Omaha Beach. Surrounded by pine and native
trees, Tepee's setting invites you to unwind, unplug and re-connect with nature. Connected by wooden walkways, your hosts Nina and Tony, have set up three tepee sites on large circular timber platforms, hovering over native rushes and grasses at the bottom of their 1.1 ha property. Staying in a tepee might not be for everyone but Tony and Nina will certainly try their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The tents are fitted out with quality beds, duvets and pillows, pure cotton linen, luxury shower towels and solar powered LED lights.
Using renewable and sustainable resources is a great part of their project and a healthy breakfast bowl is included, for which they source organic produce from local suppliers. Opening at the end of November, their tepees are available during the summer months and each tepee accommodates two adults or a small family of three. Free accommodation at Tepee is offered as part of Blue Adventures' Kite Camps, Nina and Tony's other business venture. www.tepee.co.nz tepee@blueadventures.co.nz

AOTEAROA SURF – MERCHANTS OF JOY WORDS
KIRSTY
MILLAR
Delivering magic, merchants of joy, throwing smiles on dials, there’s really no other way to describe the service delivered by Aotearoa Surf. While the business sector slots into ‘surf, paddleboard and kayak lessons’, the experience is much more.
ages and stages. Such flexibility works well for providing tailored services across the board (pun intended!) including group, family and private lessons, holiday programmes, after school lessons, corporate events, an all-ladies surfing club, NCEA credits, even gear hire or buy.
Aotearoa Surf is a true pioneering school, one of the oldest in NZ. Founder and much-loved local surfer, Wayne ‘Dolphin’ Glover started the business in the early 2000s, creating a legacy until he passed away in 2014. Che Burnett purchased the business in 2015 and has kept the vision alive. “Hundreds of people experienced the love and lesson of surfing from Wayne and we’re carrying this on. Today there are heaps of kids out in the water. Everyone will stand up and have a whole lot of fun, but they’ll also learn about safety in the ocean and they’ll sleep well tonight,” Che said.
Behind the brand are eight coaches, five of which come highly qualified and stacked with surfing accolades. Three, younger crew are simply waiting on age to allow them the full greenlight. Beach safety is paramount and Che is proud of the team around him. “We are constantly improving what we’re doing, staff training and customer feedback are our foundation - we’ve got to be buttoned-up. Our team are fantastic at what they do.”
The headquarters are mostly at Te Arai Beach, but Aotearoa Surf is also fully mobile - often spotted as far south as Orewa, and right up to Ruakaka. Having the sole license to operate from Te Arai Beach gives Che and his coaches an edge. Given Te Arai is the number one of east coast surf breaks in the Auckland Region. Just an hour north of Auckland, and on any given day the stunning beach always has waves for all
It’s okay to have job-envy right now, most of us don’t have an office at the beach, or change lives one wave at a time. But Che reckons it’s not all sand and surf, “It’s really important to give back. Our local ‘have a go’ days are completely free, with board giveaways, trophies and good times.” Ka pai Aotearoa Surf - keep weaving your magic. www.aotearoasurf.co.nz www.facebook.com/aotearoasurf/

MANGAWHAI KAURI TREE HUT WORDS
We all dream of escaping to somewhere unique and I think we may have found that little gem . The Kauri Tree Hut, in beautiful Mangawhai, a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Picture yourself relaxing in the hammock, up among the native trees , listening to the sounds of the birds, and the creek below. You will feel a million miles away.

Owners , Ryan and Rachel had always had a dream of owning a tree house that they could offer to people who needed a rest or wanted to enjoy a peaceful reflective time. So when they stumbled across a property with these rustic tree houses for sale, they thought they had found the perfect place to set up what they had been dreaming about for the past ten years.
Kauri Tree Hut is actually made up of three little separate huts . A bedroom and lounge hut, a bathroom hut, and a kitchen hut. Elevated on stilts , amongst native bush and kauri trees, the perfect spot to be at one with nature. The huts have been lovingly restored, with every attention to detail. The couple combined their talents, Rachel is very

creative and has studied a bit of interior design, she had been longing for a project like this. Ryan likes to create and make things, which meant that Rachel would come up with wild ideas, and he had to come up with a way to make it all happen, all while still sticking to a really tight budget . The creative couple also had a builder friend, Hayden Thorpe, do the technical building work, to make sure everything was done properly and there were no mishaps. As you can imagine, there is bound to be some obstacles with a project like this, because the huts are only accessed by a 400m long up hill driveway, that was very rough terrain. So to add to the adventure, all building materials had to be loaded into Ryan’s ute and taken all the way up the hill. Doing this in the middle of winter, battling all sorts of weather. They were determined to get it done, no matter what the weather had in store for them. This really was a family affair. With most of the work being done on the weekends, meant that the pair juggled parenthood at the same time. Ryan and Rachel would take turns to look after their 3 children, while the other drove from Auckland to Mangawhai to work on the huts for the weekend. The light at the end of the tunnel was that the basic structures were actually already there as some historic tree huts. So fortunately they already had the framework to start from. They really enjoyed how much freedom there was

in working with these. A standard house that you will live in has to have a lot of practical design parameters. Where as with these they had complete freedom to be creative and could really work outside the box. They really
put their creativity to the test by working with a lot of recycled timbers and re-purposing old items to give them a new use. The aim was for the huts to be rustic and quite original on the outside, but then truly beautiful on

toilet and a comfy bed.
One of the many special things in a place like this , is a strong connection to the outdoors and nature. The couple achieved this by creating a large deck with hanging chairs and hammocks, over-sized outdoor bath and outdoor shower. The huts have been set up to be eco-friendly, with solar lights, rainwater collection and a composting toilet.
Although a taxing adventure on the family, coming out the other side, and seeing the finished product, this has resulted in creating something truly magical and they are incredibly in love with the end result. Kauri Tree Hut can be rented out for holidays via canopycamping.co.nz

RUMBLES CANTEEN WORDS
CARLIE
BLANCHETT-BURTON
There’s been a few rumbles on the grapevine about what is happening at Grant and Yvonne Clifton's property on the corner of Matakana and Anderson Road since Rummage closed earlier this year. It’s seems big things are on the way with Rumbles Canteen due to open onsite late November.
Rumbles will specialise in serving the most delicious cookies and ice-cream in New Zealand. Their delicious range of gelatos comes from Kowhai Creamery who recently won best gelato for their Velutto Blueberry Gelato and best new to market flavour for their Zesty Lemon Curd Gelato at the 2017 New Zealand Ice cream Awards.
So why the move from retail to hospitality? Rumbles is an opportunity for the whole family to work together. It is something Grant, Yvonne and daughters Madison, aged 14, and Alexa, aged 11, have been thinking about for quite a while. An ice cream and cookie shop seemed a perfect fit with their passions and interests.
Home baking is also an important part of the menu. Alexa firmly believes that, “Everyone deserves Rumbles cookies,” so there will be gluten free, dairy-free, grain free and refined sugar free options. Rumbles is also the refreshment spot for the Sunday Drive Collective, a Matakana retail experience featuring independent retailers.
“Grant is a natural host, Madison has a knack for scooping ice cream, Lexi loves baking cookies and I love the challenge of bringing everything together,” Yvonne says.
It will be no surprise to those who visited Rummage that Rumbles has an eclectic industrial retro feel. The space also reflects our Matakana beach culture and takes cues from its rural

setting. Old wire bread baskets and scaffolding have been recreated into a fantastic table. Little bird houses fill the roof space at one end. A classic kiwi caravan sits at the other. Willow trees sway gently over the counter, giving the whole space a touch of fantasy and whimsy. In tribute to Rummage, the space will also have a curated collection of special retro treasures for sale. The family are looking forward to working together. “We love having a place with a child friendly vibe where people can come and get the classic kiwi summer experience. It will be great to catch up with all the locals, as well as meet new people.” Rumbles will be a great place for family and friends to relax and enjoy the sweet life. www.rumblescanteen.com

BEER AWARDS WORDS
IAN
MARRIOTT
0942 706 •027493680 The rise of the North, The Northmen have been south and conquered. Familiar terms for Vikings and Game of Thrones fans but terms not often linked to the New Zealand Brewing scene...until now! The New Zealand Brewers Guild (NZBG) held their annual awards recently in Christchurch and our northern brewers did exceptionally well. The Brewers Guild judges gathered for three days prior to the festival to sip and sample the 964 beers and ciders that were entered into this year's competition. Judging is done in a way that the beers are unidentifiable by anything other than taste, aroma and colour. The judging criteria is set down under firm guidelines based on aroma, appearance, flavour, mouthfeel, overall impression and then given scores out of 50 that see the recipients receive Gold, Silver, Bronze or nothing at all. Any medal is considered a major achievement in the industry and can open doors for future sales.
The highest scoring beer in each class gains the coveted trophy for Best in Class. Right then, now you know how it works! Enter the northern breweries! Warkworth's 8 Wired claimed a massive 19 medals including two Golds for their Barley Wine, Lord of the Atlas and Stout Unchained. They also earned eight Silvers and nine Bronzes with several of their superb barrel aged beers amongst the medal winners. "It's always disappointing not to win a trophy but it was a pretty good haul," claimed 8 Wired's Soren Eriksen. McLeod's Brewery in Waipu returned home with the trophy for Best International Lager for their Longboarder Lager and the only Gold medal achieved in the category. The gold was dripping that night as they also collected bling for their Paradise Pale Ale, Chili Pilsner and Traders Scotch Ale. Add the four bronzes and the little Waipu brewery returned with eight medals from ten

beers. Not bad at all! Matakana's Sawmill Brewery collected five Gold medals for their Sawmill IPA, Session IPA, Weizenbock Colab, Baltic Porter and a packaging Gold. The Baltic Porter and The Weizenbock were judged Best in Class. It was a truly magnificent result that had The Sawmill finish in the top three breweries in the land. So, the north has risen and it is no longer the brewing wilderness that is has been in the past. It is producing award-winning breweries and superbly crafted beers that you need to get out and enjoy. Don't trust the medals alone, taste and form your own opinion and maybe you'll discover next year's winners along the way.

Many would be turned away by the thought of flying sparks and hot metal, but Jowan Nute sees his future in the flames. Jowan was first introduced to blacksmithing at the age of 11 as he watched a documentary on Viking swords and how they were made. But his curiosity and passion were truly sparked as he lit his first forge a short time later, and he’s never looked back. Born in Cornwall, England, Jowan and his family moved to Matakana in 2011. Jowan’s first forge was nothing more than a hairdryer stuck into the side of a pile of bricks assembled in the backyard. His dad, a joiner/cabinetmaker by trade, and his granddad, a man of many talents, gave him support and inspiration as he learned to use a hammer and strike the iron on his first forge. The first item Jowan crafted out of hot metal was a small letter opener made from a piece of Number 8 wire. Basic in function and design, a simple letter opener involves numerous important skills, including scrolling, flattening, and tapering of the hot metal into the desired object. As his love for blacksmithing grew, his desire for it to become more than a hobby also grew. His outdoor forge was moved to a purpose-built workshop on his parents’ property that he and his father built over the summer of 2015. Jowan Nute is currently a 15-year-old, Year 10 student at Mahurangi College. With the busyness of being a full-time student, Jowan hasn’t been able to spend as much time working on his blacksmithing skills as he would like to, but the desire to create objects with style and purpose continues to be an instrumental part of his life. He continues to perfect his craft whenever given the opportunity. In 2017, Jowan launched his own small blacksmithing business. Halwyn Forge, named after the Cornish hamlet his family is from, focusses on making small bespoke items. Jowan has increased his skills since the days of the small letter opener and now offers forged decorative wall hooks, wood-fired pizza pokers, boot scrapes, bottle openers, and drawer handles.

MATAKANA INFORMATION CENTRE The Volunteers at Matakana Information Centre (MIC) are an eclectic bunch, but one thing binds them together as one – the desire to help others, locals and visitors alike, to appreciate and enjoy the Matakana Coast. An independent organisation, MIC is situated at the rear of the Matakana Cinema lobby, right next to the fireplace. It’s a great place to visit on a cold winter’s day (sit awhile and catch up on local news from Junction Magazine), or to plan your day, or stay, in the Matakana region. The MIC can help with most issues, from suggestions for what to do with the kids on a dreary day to local business contacts. Stop by and browse through their extensive array of promotional literature and up-to-date guides on upcoming events. If you’ve got an upcoming local community event they will post this for you on the Events Board. Even if you’re a local, it is the perfect place to make sure you’re up with all that’s going on. Can’t make it down to the Cinema? No problem. You can find MIC online at www.matakanainfo.org.nz or like them on Facebook to keep up with regular posts of local interest. The MIC team is currently looking for new members. Local business are invited to become an “MIC Supporter”. For an annual subscription, your business will be promoted at the Centre, and details including photos available on their website. Through us, you will also become a member of Matakana Coast Tourism. They are also on the lookout for volunteers. If you are outgoing, and have a working PC knowledge they would like to hear from you. www.matakanainfo.org.nz
ART SCHOLARSHIP HONOURS LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER When renowned local portrait photographer Michelle Moir passed away from cancer in September, aged 48, her former Rodney College classmates knew exactly how to honour her memory. “Michelle could relate to absolutely anyone,” says school friend Jo Yuretich. “We wanted to celebrate all the beauty and joy she brought to our lives.” Michelle, who grew up in the Whangaripo Valley, was highly regarded for her striking documentary portraits of children and families, as well as her two books: Images of Maori Women (also a major exhibition) and New Zealand Country Women. Beyond the camera, Michelle had a flair for beauty and good design, as visitors to her Matakana studio will testify. So in October, Jo and friends launched the Michelle Moir Art Scholarship – an annual award of $1,000 (and a bunch of flowers) to support a promising senior art student at Rodney College in the furtherance of their art and creativity. “We invite anyone who wishes to join us in paying tribute to Michelle, to contribute any amount – small or large – to the scholarship fund,” says Jo. Funds will be held in trust by Michelle’s lawyer. Contributions can be made by direct deposit to the following account at Westpac bank: Davenports Harbour Lawyers Trust Account. 03 1322 0682256 02 with the reference “MM Art Scholarship”. The first scholarship will be awarded at the Rodney College prizegiving on 31 October 2017. christine@christinesheehy.co

ARTS
THE VIVIAN GALLERY – AN ENDING AND A BEGINNING WORDS
The Vivian Gallery’s annual ‘360˚ Small Show’ celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, opening on 4 November. Each year, pre-Christmas, many of the Vivian artists create special small pieces specifically for this exhibition. It’s an unmissable chance to buy affordable art, and perfect too for those of us with smaller spaces. The show finishes on December 10 – plenty of time to pick up your new art and wrap it for Christmas. This is followed by ‘State of Play’ which opens on December 16 and runs to the end of January. This year-end exhibition is also becoming something of a Vivian institution, showcasing new directions from around a dozen artists. This year we’ll see

work from Simon McIntyre, Cathy Carter, Vicky Fanning, Robert Fraser, Paul Maseyk, Wayne Youle, Richard Lewer, Chris Charteris, Vivienne Worn, Hannah Valentine, Reuben Paterson, David McCracken and Garry Currin. Chris Charteris has been a carver for over 25 years. His heritage is Kiribati, Fijian and English; he works with pounamu, rock and bone. His work is titled ‘Powerpoint Presentations’. Inspired by the phrase ‘contemporary artefact’, and a recent trip through several different countries. Chris has transformed whale spinal discs into giant versions of wall sockets to create arresting new forms of a familiar household item.
Reuben Paterson is another welcome guest at the Vivian. His exuberant art is characterised by the use of glitter and diamond dust and hangs in many major galleries across Australasia. His new work promises delight: works on paper which focus on his love for both floral blooms and fireworks. “I’m often reminded of one when I see the other,” he says. “These new pieces are my way of merging the two.” Local glass and ceramic artist Vicki Fanning’s ongoing obsession with glass has its roots in the invisible interactions we have with it every day. “It could be said that we’re now in the Glass Age,” says Vicki. “From computer technology to

lasers, lenses and even medicine – the western world couldn’t function without it.” Her latest work is informed by the way glass has enabled the mechanics of new anthropological paradigms: the social networks we now take for granted are facilitated by glass, delivered to us via fibre optic cables and in screens on phones and laptops. December is a time of reckoning for the Vivian Gallery itself. The gallery has a new director, local branding guru and art collector Scott Lawrie. Scott trained as an artist at the Edinburgh College of Art (BA Hons in Drawing and Painting and a Master of Philosophy) and has nurtured a long-held dream to open his own gallery. To say he’s excited about
owning the Vivian would be something of an understatement – he’s positively effervescent! In a speech which opened Peter Panyoszki’s October exhibition, Scott paid tribute to the vision and achievement of the previous owner, Helen Crosby, who has worked alongside Sandy Meharry and Mandy Thomsett-Taylor since the Vivian’s inception five years ago. Sandy and Mandy continue at the gallery in expanded versions of their previous roles. Scott sees the Vivian becoming a real destination to discover and learn more about art in the region. “We’ll be showing a much wider range
of contemporary art in different spaces within the gallery,” he says. “We’ll bring in curators to tackle some of the bigger art questions, and invite international and young, emerging artists to exhibit, too. We’re rebranding in January, and you’ll see some quite different shows.” The outside area will include more sculpture – but with a twist, Scott says, with a twinkle. “Ultimately we want the space to be a place where people can connect to contemporary art in accessible, intelligent ways, while always enjoying the warm welcome that’s so unique to the Vivian.” www.thevivian.co.nz

MATAKANA OYSTER & WINE FESTIVAL PICTURES
BRAD
HOLLIER
The rain stopped, and the sun shone immediately as the gates opened for the first sold out Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival. Over 1500 oyster lovers were entertained by locals Jade River Ukes and DJ Wendy Douglas alongside Josh Lees and The Rubics. Attendees enjoyed their complementary glass of local wine or beer with two half-shelled local Mahurangi oysters. They were spoilt for choice with the oysters being served in a range of different ways and with a plethora of accompaniments. Washed down with a glass of their favourite local drop of wine, beer or cider the day proved a success and an introductory taste of the Matakana Coast for many.

Two great local jazz bands are joining together for an afternoon of jazz at Matakana Hall on Sunday 26 November, 2-4pm. Mahurangi Ramblers play toe tapping, New Orleans style jazz while Jazz Connection play Glenn Miller era swing and will feature their new lead singer Dana Ferguson.
Her exhibition titled, ‘Colour & Texture’ showcases her gutsy, impasto approach to each painting with her bold brushstroke technique and use of colour.
