SPOTLIGHT

HEY JUDE... WORDS

I’ve seen the future and it’s on Ben Lynch’s mobile phone. Jude is the name of the app Ben built to manage your bank accounts – for any bank – your bills, Kiwisaver, and pretty much anything else financial. Ben gave me a quick demo on his phone and, suddenly, it all started to make sense. Jude strikes me as one of those products you don’t know you need until you start using it and then you find it indispensable. Ben explains, “It allows you to be smart about your payments, avoid fees and, importantly, own your own data. It returns the power over your finances to you. Jude will also allow services such as number portability – like you can do with your mobile phone number now, but it would be your bank account number. And it does so much more. Being stung by his bank for unnecessary fees inspired Ben to build the app. “I decided there was a better way to deal with my accounts so I built Jude as a side project while I was working for Xero in Wellington. Now, the business resides in a small office in Matakana. “I have one

LUKE

WILLIAMSON

employee, but I’m about to do another fundraising round which should allow me to hire a couple more people. Ben grew up in Arrowtown, moved to Wellington to work at Xero and then to Auckland. “But I’m no city kid, says Ben, “so my wife and I moved to Point Wells. We’ve been here for two years. He loves the community feel of Point Wells and their two children go to Matakana Primary. My assumption that Ben was the product of a traditional university education was quickly shot down. "I’m completely self-taught. I got bored and failed my last year at school, but I loved learning and doing things on my own, figuring it out for myself. Staying focused on the core purpose of Jude is important for Ben. “One of the things about this opportunity is deciding what not to do because the scope is so large. We’ve just changed over to subscription basis so we are now figuring out what those paying people are using and doubling-down on making it better for them. Then we just have to find more people like that.

 Â? Â?Â? Â? Â? Â? Â? Â? Â?   € ‚  Âƒ  Â„ ƒÂ?

6

Five years from now, Ben aims to be employing a lot more people and he hopes to have a pretty decent foothold in Australia. “New Zealand is a great test space, he explains, “but the world is the market. Everyone has a bank account and a phone, and bills to pay, so that’s the size of the market. For more information... well, you’ll just have to be patient. “We are invite only at this stage while we continue to build and test the app, says Ben. “I personally guide each new subscriber through Jude’s features. We want 1000 people paying to use the product in the next 12 months, and have them absolutely love Jude and talk about it to their friends. Once we have that base of people talking about the product, the scaling up process is pretty easy. Then we watch Matakana Valley become the next Silicon Valley.

PROFILE

BIG FISH IN A SMALL POND She’s the host, producer and director of successful TV fishing show TradeZone ‘Addicted to Fishing’ on Prime, and was the first and remains the only female fishing show presenter in Australasia with her own show. Mangawhai’s Nicky Sinden also has a social media following that rivals the top players in an overwhelmingly male-dominated industry. But despite her success, Nicky reveals that she never really thought of herself as much of a TV presenter. “I was originally supposed to make the show with Mandy,'' she says, meaning Mandy Kupenga - to date New Zealand’s only other female fishing show presenter, whose show ‘Get Your Fish On’ ran for two seasons. Nicky and Mandy worked together in the corporate world in Auckland, where their shared love of fishing brought them together, and they remain firm friends to this day. “Mandy was the natural in front of the camera, and I was the less confident one,” Nicky says. But when Mandy was offered a funding deal to create her own show, Nicky took a punt and sold her boat and truck to raise funds for a pilot episode of ‘Addicted to Fishing’, and dove head first into the unfamiliar world of networks, ratings and programming schedules. Fortunately she already had a strong background in advertising and a host of valuable contacts. Working for the New Zealand Herald, she developed a specialist outdoors publication that proved immensely successful, sowing the seeds for a career that aligned with her true passion - fishing. “I bought my own boat and I was fishing every weekend from after work on Friday to Sunday evening,” Nicky says. “Monday morning I’d come into the Herald and dish out a whole heap of fish. Everyone in the office knew me as ‘the fishing chick’, so it felt like a natural progression to move on to the show and follow my dream.” It wasn’t without risk. Nicky’s show, and her dream, were completely reliant on sponsorship. But once her pilot was accepted by a TV station, she took “a leap of faith”, quit her job, set up a desk in her bedroom and started cold calling her contacts list to find sponsors for the show.

Six seasons and 78 episodes later, you’d never guess there was a time when Nicky felt out of her depth. “I look back at the first season and cringe,” she says, referring to the adorably unpolished and quintessentially kiwi presenting style that first made her a hit with viewers. But as her fishing skills and knowledge have developed over the years, so too has her confidence and poise as a presenter. These days, there are few who doubt her abilities, with several impressive catches including a world record to her name. In 2017 she made waves when she broke an International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) record that had stood for 65

years, landing the biggest broadbill swordfish ever caught by a woman. The 4.2m long, 361kg fish won her numerous accolades, and earned her the respect of the global fishing community. “I feel very blessed and humbled when it all comes together like it did that day,” says Nicky, who is a firm believer in manifesting the things you want in life through the power of positive thinking. It’s an approach that has served her well, and one that she says has been a pivotal reason for the success of her show. It also resulted in her meeting her now husband, Limitless Scaffolding owner Matt Wilson. While her friends in Auckland warned her she’d never

Slip into Spring

find love living in a place like Mangawhai, Nicky “put all her faith in the universe” and made the move north regardless, seeking her own space out of the city, and most importantly somewhere to park the boat. All six seasons of TradeZone Addicted to Fishing are available to watch on YouTube. To keep up-todate with their latest episodes subscribe to the TradeZone Addicted to Fishing channel.

LOCAL OYSTER FARM TOURS

This region offers an amazing coastline from rugged outer islands to calm inlets and harbours. In one such harbour, The Mahurangi, runs New Zealand’s only oyster farm tour. The flat bottom boat named ‘The Shuckleferry’ glides gently across the bay from the departure point of Scotts Landing and, as the name suggests, stops in prime shucking location - a working oyster farm. Newly renovated and repowered with twin Honda engines supplied by Mahurangi Marine, the vessel offers comfortable time out on the water for up to 20 people. The oysters farmed in this harbour are of the Pacific variety - Crassostrea Gigas. Arriving in New Zealand around the 1960s this prolific breeder soon occupied harbours all over the north growing on wooden sticks. Little has changed since the farms were formed, in fact the area we head to was one of the first established and is a sight to behold, as the tide retreats showing thousands of the slate coloured bi-valves growing in the nutrient rich waters. A mature oyster can filter up to 100 litres of water a day, thus giving the oysters a unique flavour, showcasing the area they have grown. “The pacific is generally a sweet flavour and you wouldn’t be mistaken detecting notes

of melon and cucumber, however for the average oyster lover, they are just bloody delicious,” says owner Phil Morris. Before devouring the bounty, the skipper gives a “shucking” lesson with each person having to shuck their own before having a good old-fashioned seafood feed. BBQ oysters are also on the menu, with even the most apprehensive oyster fence sitter turned with a shell filled with melted garlic butter. After the feast we cruise the sheltered bays looking for stingrays and enjoying the fresh salt air until the return back to Scotts Landing. New Zealand Oyster Farm Tours runs a one-hour cruise daily with a full two hour experience every second weekend and every day from 1 December 20 January. Check them out at this year’s Oyster Festival, where they will be running The Shucking Competition.

Our aim is to divert waste from landfill and make it easy for everyone to do the same. Led by Steve and Gemma, we are a small family-owned and operated business, with sustainability at our core. Since 2012 we have diverted over 6 million kilograms of compostable matter from landfill, closing the loop on food waste. Composting organic waste reduces greenhouse gas emissions, returns nutrients to the soil and helps grow our food, it’s a win-win! If it can be composted – we can collect it!

BRINING HOME THE BACON WORDS

CARLIE

It’s been three years to the day that Matakana Bacon Company supplied their first batch of nitrate free and sugar free bacon to the local Matakana Four Square. What started off as a very niche concept to make bacon free of sugar and cancer causing nitrates has now grown into a fully fledged small business supplying all Farro Fresh stores in Auckland, selected New World Supermarkets and Four Squares with bacon that is a healthy alternative to the mass produced varieties. Since inception they have been operating the business out of the local Matakana Village Butchery working unusual hours so as not to disrupt the day to day workings of the butchery. As co-owner, Steve Charnley says, “It had got to the stage where we had completely outgrown the space we had been operating from and with the Village Butchery growing every year we ended up having to moonlight there in the evenings and on Sundays which wasn’t ideal. When the opportunity came to move into a purpose-built premise right beside the Farmers’ Market we jumped at the chance.” The new premise were previously the big green shed that was used by

Owner, Richard Didsbury, has completely rebuilt the building from the inside out to create a fantastic food processing space, perfect for a growing business like the Matakana Bacon Company. “With Matakana Coffee Roasters serving their coffee next door we thought it would be a great opportunity for us to also serve the best bacon butties and bacon and egg baps throughout the morning. We will be open bright and early for people to get their breakfast along with their coffee. It’s a match made in heaven!” says Steve. To help this side of the business operation Steve’s son James will be up every day very early to prepare the takeaway food. James is also very keen to expand the food offerings and will be working on a few innovations over the next few months. Business partner, and owner of the Village Butchery, Matt Watts will still play an integral role in the business. “Matt will still be busy helping out with some of the butchery work and will also continue producing the Matakana Bacon gluten free, nitrate free sausages that are so popular at the Farmers’

Hopefully, we will be able to supply our sausages every day!” It’s obvious when talking to Steve he just loves handcrafting a range of bacon that is made from ethically farmed New Zealand pork that contains no harmful ingredients. “Nitrates are what gives bacon such a bad reputation from groups like the World Health Organisation. There is no need for them! We use nature’s preservatives, sea salt, rosemary and sage to produce bacon that truly does love you back.” www.matakanabacon.nz 0274265010

MA’KETO KITCHEN RULES!

Keto is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. When people hear that they can have an amazing dessert made without refined sugar and flour and almost without carbs, the first reaction is disbelief. It is because we are programmed to think that everything that tastes good has to have carbs in it. As a chef with over ten years experience and a Master of Science in Gastronomy, the keto style of cooking has tested Maja Moors’ knowledge, skills and patience, after starting her business ‘Ma’Keto Kitchen’, making Keto desserts. “Twisting recipes so they don’t have carbs in them is a lot more challenging than I presumed,” she says. “I started my Keto adventure two years ago, after struggling with postnatal depression and weight gain after giving birth. Keto has changed my life, the lives of my family and inspired me to dive into Keto cooking. After losing 32kg, and gaining my confidence back, I chose to share my knowledge through my business and make Keto great for everybody who has a decadent taste for desserts.” Keto is not a high fat diet, it is a high protein diet with higher allowances of ‘good fat’ intake. Creating desserts and cakes with perfect balance and

limited ingredients is challenging, but that is what separates Ma’Keto Kitchen from others. “Using the knowledge from Molecular Gastronomy, skills from my trade and personal experience being on Keto, I’ve been able to create the most delicious, guilt-free desserts.” The most popular are mousse cakes with cocoa butter glaze and the more traditional desserts (with their keto twists) like tiramisu, panna cotta, Crème brûlée, and macarons. Cutting out the carbs from our diet has long-term health benefits, as our bodies start using fat as fuel and in turn this makes us more energetic and vibrant. For more information (or to drool over Maja’s latest creations) follow Ma’Keto on Instagram (@maketo.kitchen.nz) or Facebook.

GOOD MEAT COMES FROM A GOOD HOME

There’s something about a good local butchery that inspires loyalty in customers, be it quality, service, point of difference or source. Warkworth Butchery believes it’s all the above but definitely has a lot to do with time! The store has been in the same location as a butchery for over 100 years, which is a magnificent feat to those who have run it and to those who have supported it. The original store was one of Warkworth’s earliest, set up as Bowen’s General store before becoming a butchery in 1905 by T.F. Bray. It then passed to G. Guest in 1912 followed by the synonymous H. Stubbs in 1922 and the legacy of ‘Stubbs Butchery’ begins… The butchery stayed in the Stubbs family for around 80 years, served by three generations of iconic members of both butchery and the Warkworth township. In 1931 the original butchery burnt to the ground but was swiftly rebuilt by the Stubbs family, which is the one we still see today. It is like a still shot from the 1930s, as you walk in. The craftsmanship of the building from the ceiling and fretwork to the tiles is nostalgic and “prompts yarns, myths and

legends through the door and over the counter every other day,” says Rob Lees who took over the shop in 2014. Rob said he relished the opportunity to take over the shop with such a strong history and says he’s very proud to now be part of it now. He stumbled upon it during a trip visiting his father, when they saw that the shop was due to close its doors (which it did for 3 months). He made a phone call which led to another and another and he couldn’t stop the momentum, so all of a sudden Rob and wife Renee upped their family from Christchurch and got stuck in to rebuilding the butchery back to its former glory. “Local customers seemed really keen for it to be part of the main street again,” recalls Rob. “They’d come in offering advice and opinions (both personal and business minded), as they seemed to have a sense of community ownership. It was pretty awesome!” Warkworth Butchery is positioned at the top end of the market, by having quality, consistency and doing the basic things right. smokehouse in-store allows them to make such a point of difference to everyday cuts plus creates an aroma loved by customers. He applauds the effort that his customers make to shop here and judging by the testimonials from locals, they are equally full of praise for Rob and the team's service. “In these times and this trade, it is hard to bend the trend regarding packaging,” he says. However, Warkworth Butchery are returning to traditional, minimal methods of packaging their products by using paper wrapping, sharing items by reducing bags and as most of their selections are fresh on the tray (not prepacked) they can achieve this. “We have a large customer base that bring in their own containers, jugs, jars, buckets, bins,

bags or anything to put goods in other than single use bags,” observes Rob. By contrast the store is moving into the future with features such as their new ‘Click-and-Collect’ service which is available through their website. “Mixing the right amount of modern and tradition is key,” Rob added. Their level of quality, service and advice should ensure this iconic butchery is here for a while yet.

A PICTURE PERFECT STAY AT THE GALLERY

Nestled within the peaceful rural landscape of Mahurangi West, a mere 35 minutes north of Auckland, sits The Gallery Accommodation. Set on six acres, two of rolling lawns with a four-acre backdrop of mature Kauri forest and stunning sea views out to the Hauraki Gulf, the building was designed by architect Pip Cheshire as the art gallery/studio and apartment for acclaimed New Zealand bronze sculptor, Terry Stringer.

Once purchased, the couple spent two and a half years renovating the property to transform it from art studio/gallery and home, into luxury boutique accommodation. The goal was to retain the aesthetic of the buildings and preserve Stringer’s artwork, while providing guests with a unique accommodation experience.

From 2001-2015 the property was open to the public as Zealandia Sculpture Gardens, showcasing Stringer’s bronze sculptures and large paintings.

The Gallery Accommodation features two uniquely self-contained suites, the Forest Suite and the Cloud Suite, purpose built for a blissful indulgent escape.

Current owners Jane Scott and Ash Hare first visited the property when it operated as Zealandia. From the onset there was a strong attraction to the property, Ash being a builder of high-end homes and Jane with a strong sense of design, both passionate about art and architecture.

“We chose the interior furnishings in response to the style of the building. The previous owners left behind a Le Corbusier light fitting which led us down a mid-century design path, says Ash. “The inspiration for the interiors reflects the building and its connection to the environment. The Gallery offers a different perspective.” Constructed from concrete tilt slab and meranti ply panelling, the ground floor Forest Suite is moody and mysterious with Stringer’s large scale paintings adorning the walls and the spaces naturally unfolding to reveal themselves as you move through. In the dining room, red, blue, yellow and purple lights reflect on the white walls, specifically chosen to highlight the 19th Century stained glass windows previously housed in a French Cathedral. The full height window in the bedroom looks out to the Kauri forest and the luggage room mirrors this with Fornasetti ‘Chiavi Segrete’ wallpaper consisting of mystical, dense leaf motifs interspersed with antique keys. At the top of the spiral staircase, inspired by the Fornasetti ‘Nuvolette’ wallpaper, a beautifully rendered cloudy sky effect, is the Cloud Suite occupying the second and third storeys of the accommodation. Although more conventional, the floor plan being essentially two stacked high stud cubes, the construction and interior fit and finish are far from standard. The North and West elevations have commercial joinery continuous over the three storeys, affording tranquil rural and water views.

In contrast to the warm earthy colour palette of the Forest Suite, the Cloud Suite is awash in a soothing blue-green/teal palette. This is accentuated in the lounge by ‘The Pond’ a stunning Source Mondial rug, which fits snugly into the space. The second floor bedroom complemented by a spacious powder room and en suite bathroom, is accessed by a set of metal stairs and once there you are greeted by a bird’s eye view of the forest canopy and the Hauraki Gulf. We’re very excited to finally be able to share The Gallery with guests,” says Jane, “We’ve added many personal touches to ensure that each guest will have a memorable stay.” “Our intention has always been to create an experience for people to reconnect with each other and nature, so we encourage guests to leave their devices in flight mode and make a conscious effort to return to each other within this distinctive space.” Follow the Gallery on Instagram, or for more information or to book a stay visit their website. www.thegalleryaccommodation.nz www.instagram.com/thegallery_nz

MASTER CRAFTSMEN

MATAKANA’S HIDDEN GEM

Matakana’s hidden gem is the collaboration between Master Goldsmith John Crockett and jewellery designer and manufacturer Michael John, now located at Matakana Country Park (between Brambles Café and Art Matakana). Their intention is to create a fusion of traditional and modern jewellery design and manufacturing techniques, specialising in bespoke custom made jewellery. Master Goldsmith and Gem Setter John Crockett has been creating and hand making one-off jewels for 50 years. Previously he owned the Auckland Ring Company before deciding to move to the Matakana area to work and live. John says, “best decision ever.” The move reignited his passion to craft exquisite jewellery and so the space at the Country Park enabled him to showcase some of his more creative ideas using colourful gems. The gold and gemstone jewels he makes now, are still to enhance and delight, whilst being enjoyed as unique and different to traditional jewellery. Michael John, better known as MJ, has been designing diamond engagement rings and unique

one-off pieces for the last 15 years. From his humble beginnings in a K'rd studio, to the bustling London life of Hatton Garden, MJ has designed and manufactured for many of the leading jewellery houses around the world. He set his own company up eight years ago and relocated to the Matakana Coast two years ago. He uses one of the most advanced computer aided jewellery design systems in the world. He can produce an on-screen 3D model of your jewellery and phenomenal photo-realistic images of your design that allows you to visualise your finished piece well before the creation of your jewellery begins. John & MJ had already been working together for a few years, when MJ was also looking for a studio space. They subsequently joined forces to combine their talents and skills, something quite unique in New Zealand. Together, John and MJ have a unique skill set unseen before in this beautiful area we live in. They are a wealth of knowledge in all areas of jewellery design and manufacture. Pop in and see them for jewellery advice, direction and inspiration.

SELF LOVE AND WORTH WORDS

How often do you look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you are enough just as you are? How often do you take a moment to appreciate yourself? How many times have you said: ‘I've done enough for today, I am going to sit down, breathe and take a moment’? On the flip side, how often do you look in the mirror and seek out your flaws? How often do you berate yourself and wish you had done better? How often do you rattle off all the things you need to get done without stopping to consider how you are feeling? Take a moment now to consider where you invest your energy and thoughts in regards to your internal well being. Are you more of the top or the bottom paragraph? As the quote by James Redfield reads, "Where attention goes, energy flows.” If your internal

BREE

NICHOLLS

attention is centred towards self-love, kindness and compassion, chances are, you generally feel more peaceful, happier and more content. On the other hand, if your internal attention is centred mostly around negativity, you are more likely to feel frustrated, stressed, tired and like you never have enough, (while those pesky, joyful people always seem to have more). The reason the joyful people always have more is that they generally believe they are enough and have enough. Therefore, more comes their way. More fullness, more abundance and therefore more ‘luck’. However, if you are living in an internal, depleted state of feeling like you are never enough, or that others always have more than you, you will get more of what feels like bad luck and negativity constantly cropping up in your life.

If you can relate to the latter, why not try flipping the switch up on your internal self-talk? There's nothing to lose, except for having a laugh at yourself. Wherever you are right now, place your hand over your heart, close your eyes, take a deep breath and say "I am enough, I am enough, I am enough. I am perfectly imperfect". Keep up continual positive self-talk for a week and keep an eye on any changes or differences to your wellbeing, relationships and life around you in general.

SEED Seed is an inspiring and intriguing exhibition bringing together the works of three well-known Mangawhai locals. Lynn Middleton’s whimsical botanical sketches, Nicola Everett’s detailed ceramics and Josie Gritten’s striking photographic images are woven together in exploration on the nature of seeds, the stark beauty of the seed head, and the hopeful renewal of growth and life held within. Josie Gritten, widely known for her expressive and evocative photographic work has turned her attention to a new and compelling subject. Inspired by the stark beauty of Karl Blosfeld’s early 20th Century Black and White botanical images Josie has long desired to merge her interest in botany with her love of creating bold photographs. Her work in this exhibition captures the unique and intricate detail of seeds in a series of commanding and beautiful images. Lynn Middleton’s artwork begins with drawing – closely observing patterns and structure. She sketches in detail many times until she is so familiar with the subject that she can be fluid and expressive in her drawing. In her large drawings made for Seed Lynn has let plant forms work together on the page, – allowing

plants to cluster as they do when self-seeding in the wild. The images are based on how seeds fall to the ground, are blown by the wind, shaken free by passing animals and people and the natural explosion and drift of seed heads. Her images for Seed are drawn with whimsy and charm, tangled seedheads capturing the wild richness of late summer. Nicola Everett, best known for her outstanding print works has turned her attention once again to a ceramic medium. For this exhibition she has taken her inspiration from seed forms and, working in clay, explores the idea of hope and potential that is held within. The seed forms produced have no particular reference to any one seed in nature but are looking at the idea of ‘seed’ and its microscopic structure which at times can be quite fantastical. The three artists entwine their work with an elegant mastery honouring the incredible intricacies found in nature of seeds. 3-15 October Mangawhai Artists’ Gallery 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz

A WOODEN WONDER AT BRICK BAY

The Brick Bay Folly competition, now in its fifth year, has gone from strength to strength. The 2019 winning team has created an organic wooden wonder. This prestigious and exciting project receives many entries each year. This year’s winners are four first year Masters students at the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning, with an incredibly bright vision - Leo Zhu, Dorien Viliamu, Daniel Fennell and Wenhan Ji. Brick Bay Art Manager Claire Ulenberg explains, “A Folly is an architectural object that is deliberately non-functional and instead examines its surroundings and enhances the natural landscape. The Brick Bay Folly demonstrates the intersection of architecture and sculpture and the increasing overlaps in references, concepts and techniques between the two disciplines. It can be inhabited and is for visitors to be enveloped by the architecture.” The philosophy of the Folly project is to support young and emerging New Zealand architects

or students in an accredited New Zealand architecture programme. The winning entry received an overall $35,000 grant towards realising the proposed project. Previous winners have been Architectural Graduates who were already out in the working world practising, whereas this year’s team had to balance their full-time University studies, with building their first large scale structure ‘in the real world’. The Wood Pavilion is comprised of 419 pieces of 90x45mm timber, with a natural stain using Resene paints. Leo Zhu, leader of the team, describes the concept as an exploration into the materiality of timber. It was one of the biggest learning curves for the students as Zhu states, “There were quite a few challenges we didn’t foresee. Designing versus constructing is quite different and this was the team’s first experience at attempting to construct a project of this size. Pretty much every day, we were presented with a new problem to solve so our plans would change daily. We couldn’t have done it without our mentors – Richard Harris, Yusef Patel (Associate

Head of Architecture School, Unitec) and design tutors Uwe Rieger and John Chapman from the University of Auckland.” This Folly rests on a gentle slope, with its wings spread, surveying the woodlands over the lake. The design of ‘The Wood Pavilion’ aims to express the qualities of wood as an architectural material, its lightness and its composition. Freed from the horizontal and vertical arrangements in a traditional structure, the walls here are sloped at 20 degrees. ‘The Wood Pavilion’ provides shade and shelter for visitors; a contemplative resting place. The final design is a structure with an immersive spatial experience of light and materiality; the interior is open for exploration. SEVEN IMPRESSIONS EXHIBITION

Seven Impressions, the third Mangawhai Printmakers Annual Exhibition was a resounding success and a great beginning to the 2019-2020 Exhibition season at Mangawhai Artists Gallery. The seven printmakers: Wendy Clifford, Nicola Everett, Gayle Forster, Jean Fountain, Chris den Hartogh, Rosina Kamphuis and Lynn Middleton, presented work from traditional printmaking techniques, as well as exploring contemporary ideas. Two years ago, Mangawhai Printmakers thrilled and surprised visitors with bright turquoise doors at the entrance to the Gallery. This year a new pop and splash of colour celebrates spring and the start of a building project. Everyone is looking forward to next year and the fourth annual exhibition. www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai

TURNING BACK TIME: FRISKY BUSINESS AT THE LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE INFLECTION

Lycra, tight ski suits, sequins, fluro, leather and lace filled the Leigh Sawmill Cafe inflection on Saturday 24 August as ‘Frisky Business’ played an extensive range of nostalgic tracks from the fabulous 1980s. Band members John McNab, Matt Trent, Christian Brenk, all in their iconic shirts with light up ties and shades set the look to transport us back in time. The dance floor was packed as lead singers Kim Sutton and Nick Corbett busted out tunes from those well-loved genres of Pop, Rock, Ballads, New Wave, New Romantics and Synth Pop, and the crowd sang out at the top of their lungs, making for a memorable night. www.sawmillcafe.co.nz www.facebook.com/friskybusinessNZ

BLUEGRASS LEGEND TO PLAY AT WHANGATEAU

What is it that draws musicians from all around the world to Whangateau Hall? Is it the lovely wooden building with perfect acoustics? Is it the beauty of the Whangateau Harbour and surrounding hills? Is it the warm and welcoming community? It’s probably all this and more, but whatever it is, the word is out. Whangateau Hall has become a ‘must have’ stop in the planning of touring musicians and the summer schedule is great evidence of that. The Whangateau Hall spring music series this year culminates with a

full concert by Missy Raines, the seven-time winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year award and member of The First Ladies of Bluegrass. Missy will be accompanied by George Jackson (a New Zealander now living in Nashville) and Ben Garnett (originally from Arlington, Texas, now living in Nashville). This concert on Wednesday 30 October promises to be the highlight of our year and is superseding our regular monthly club night. Tickets are available on Eventfinda. The spring schedule starts as strong as it finishes with our September Club Night on Monday 30 September, hosted by and featuring Krissy Jackson and her band. A highly sought after fiddle player, Krissy has at times been a member of seven bands at the same time, all in different genres. Her show will feature a variety of styles feeding from these different experiences. On Monday 14 October New Zealand’s own answer to the Punch Brothers feature: ‘You, Me, Everybody.’ Fronted by Laurence Rhodes of RhodeWorks and his brother Sam, this bluegrass supergroup features Nat Torkington (of The Pipi Pickers) on five-string banjo, James Geluk (from Frank Burkitt Band) on bass, and Kim Bonnington (of Kim and Dusty) on guitar and vocals. You, Me, Everybody is already making waves across the country and internationally and has already released an outstanding original single “Wrong Side of the Law”. Check it out on Youtube.
