WEATHERMASTER AUCKLAND Weathermaster Auckland offers experience in their extensive range of blinds, awnings, shutters, and umbrellas – designed to work and made to last. “We thoroughly enjoy helping to find the most appropriate window covering, utilising the product functionality and features to best enhance homes.” A few favourites within their product categories are shutters and motorised blinds, and where a project requires expertise i.e. to talk the lingo with electricians for the pre wiring or technical specification, they have the expertise. “We have seen trends come and go, but with our products you will have no need to be updating again quickly and the investment will be well worth it.” The team believes in good old fashion customer service, endeavouring to provide a full rounded customer experience. sales@weathermasterak.co.nz | www.weathermasterak.co.nz

MANGAWHAI SHED The Mangawhai Shed was founded to provide a forum and physical location where men and women, young and old can share skills and make friends. Until now, this has been a low-key, low profile affair but in the last year plans have been drawn up to build a suitable workshop in a central location. Working with the Mangawhai Domain Society and Kaipara District Council, they believe they have developed a pathway to create such a facility. A fundraising and publicity campaign is being launched and members are confident of strong local support. www.mangawhaished.org www.facebook.com/mangawhaished

Multitasking in Maungaturoto Terri Donaldson

You realise as soon as you meet Terri Donaldson that she’s excited, in a practical kind of way, about most things. From her home in Maungaturoto, Terri runs a plethora of community and personal projects; she is one of those people who makes you wonder how on earth she fits it all in. Words Kathy Hunter

|

Photo Mary Stevens

Volunteering as a guide at the Matakohe Kauri Museum is a role she particularly enjoys. “Guides are known as ‘the talkers’, which is fairly appropriate for me,” she says with a self-deprecatory eye-roll. “We tell the story of the kauri; its past, present and future – and there’s a lot to say!” For over 18 years, Terri has told stories of Northland’s history to willing audiences at the Kauri Museum, dressed in period outfits from her own collection. She has collected costumes and accessories for years and has an old school prefab stuffed with her finds. Her involvement with the Otamatea Repertory Theatre fuelled her passion, and locals always know where to go for their costume requirements. Terri shared an outfit and a song of the day on the community Facebook page over lockdown. “Just a bit of fun for everyone,” she said. Terri and partner Ken Finlayson have recently gained full organic certification for their 180head dairy farm, Wharepuke Organics, and Terri plans her many other interests around farm work. The 100-hectare farm has been

8

in Ken’s family for 150 years. The change to organic farming was huge, but definitely worth it according to Terri, and it’ll soon be a stopover on a local tour. However, there’s quite a bit more on her to-do list. She chairs the Maungaturoto Residents Association and has run the Christmas Parade for 15 years (“we had 30-odd floats last year!”). She’s on a funding panel for the Northland Community Foundation, and she’s the new artistic director of the Kaipara Wearable Arts Awards. Terri also helps run a small film company, Lonely Cookie Productions, with director Dave Perrett and legendary Māori cinematographer Fred Renata. They recently filmed the handover to the Kauri Museum of an extraordinary collection of Māori artefacts dating back to the 1860s, donated by descendants of early settlers the Rintoul family. It was an emotional return to the Kaipara for these priceless taonga, particularly for local iwi. The film will be shown on Māori Television. The museum is a huge part of the Kaipara

district, so everyone is delighted that it will receive a three million dollar grant from the government’s Provincial Growth Fund this year. It’s well-deserved: this jaw-dropping, 4,550-square metre repository of historical exhibits includes kauri gum and wood, tools and machinery, photographs, textiles and document archives, furniture and homewares, a working sawmill and much more. The timing of this grant is perfect,” says Terri. “We have a wonderful general manager in Tracey Wedge, who has a PhD in dress history. She’s passionate about the museum and will lead much-needed cataloguing and conservation, a new research centre, and an upgrade for the museum entrance and café.” On Saturday 3 October - ‘Settlers Day’, the lovely old machinery will be fired up and there’ll be traditional arts and crafts workshops, stories and lots of hands-on fun. Make sure you track Terri down – calving on the farm will be over by then and she’d love the chance to have a natter about the history of the kauri in Northland. www.kaurimuseum.com

All About The Bass Northern Bass turns ten this summer with an event celebrating music and the beautiful surrounds of Worsfold Farm. Photos Jamie Lees & Mitch Iles

From small beginnings, the festival has become a popular fixture on the New Year’s calendar, attracting musicians from around the world, and music lovers from all over the country. This year’s festival will focus on the New Zealand acts that have played at the festival over the years, including charttoppers L.A.B., Shapeshifter, JessB, Ladi6 and many more.

environmental stewardship and has worked hard to decrease the rubbish each year. “Northern Bass is a music festival, but a large part of what makes it so special is the environment. This is a beautiful part of the world, and it’s really important that we play our part in keeping it that way,” Popham says. “Caring for the land is as important to us as it is to the landowners. We have strong waste minimisation policies and work hard to divert waste from landfill via recycling, composting and reusability initiatives.”

“The festival came into being after we met the Worsfold family. Bill Worsfold had always dreamed of having their property used for events,” Festival Director Gareth Popham says. “We found an amazing home for the festival on the farm, and we love the area.” The festival has connected with many locals, using local businesses and employing as many locals as possible, as well as supporting two charities in the area, Kaiwaka Sports Association and Hakaru Domain. Festival attendees give retailers in Kaiwaka and Mangawhai their biggest days of the year. Beyond these tangible connections, the festival team has a huge focus on

There are more than 100 “Greenteam” volunteers on site at Northern Bass to work alongside the waste management contractor. This team monitors waste and maximises recycling on site - not just of plastic, but of tents, with a successful ongoing ‘Love Your Tent’ initiative that encourages festival-goers to take away their tents and bring them back each year. They also manage the Kartent (cardboard tent area) and composting on the site.

“Coming here is the best decision I ever made.” - Pat

Other waste initiatives include ensuring all serveware used by food vendors on site is compostable, that drinks are served in “Globelets” - reusable plastic cups that are washed and used many times at the festival and then washed again for use at future events, and a waste streaming setup that allows workers and festival goers to dispose of different waste types appropriately. “We’re really proud that the festival is turning ten this summer - we started small, and while we’ve come a long way, we’ve kept the numbers capped over the past few years so that we keep Northern Base at a size that keeps it relaxed for festival-goers, but is also the right size for the region. This year is looking to sell-out earlier than ever before, which shows that our audience loves this part of the world as much as we do.” “A huge thank you to all the locals who help make Northern Bass a great success story.” event@northernbass.co.nz www.northernbass.co.nz

Slowing the Wheel - Colette Cherie Colette is an artist/maker who is on a creative journey with an inspiring holistic approach to her practice. Currently working out of her home studio in the beautiful east coast town of Waipu.

Colette studied and freelanced, mostly as a graphic designer for some years - before coming to find more recently a practice in clay. Colette came to find a certain meditative stillness when working with clay that felt very different to meeting deadlines and other people's creative briefs. “I find clay has certain qualities about it, it literally has a mind of its own - a memory,” says Colette. “I really need to let go, go with the creative process and just see what happens - it’s a refreshing approach to making!” Colette is an artist who says she is “rediscovering the joys that live within slower times”. Not something she admits comes

These days it's important to Colette to seek out the slower moments in life that bring joy. “As a family we try to build these moments into our daily rhythms, moments where we can just be, take the time to notice the little things and reconnect.” These moments are often what motivates and brings inspiration to Colette’s work as a maker; be it a little found fern frond from a morning walk that is thoughtfully pressed into a hand-pinched bowl or simply paying more attention to the creative process of hand-pinching that

A Solid Connection: Shane Dudley New Zealand born Shane 'Spud' Dudley’s works draw on both his Pakeha and Maori background, with many pieces highlighting the mana of the 'real' object such as a Huia feather or mere pounamu, of which he makes powerfully enlarged versions. Now a Warkworth resident after spending time in Australia, Shane's background is in hand brushed sign writing and specialist concrete finishing. These acquired skills and techniques complement his work as he uses cement and coloured oxides as a mixed media to create a unique texture (without the use of paints) to overlay onto hardies-board (his choice of canvas). This technique allows him to mimic stone without the weight, making these pieces easy to hang. "I love New Zealand's raw volcanic presence, along with the relatively short but action packed past, from the time humans first set foot on this land, he tells us. “This is, and continues to be, my inspiration. My challenge is to transfer our history into contemporary art works that are seriously textured and conceptually new." Shane’s works are statement pieces found in private collections and corporate settings worldwide and are available for commission pieces. For more of his works follow him on Instagram or view his pieces at Artform Matakana or the Parnell Gallery. www.instagram.com/shanespuddudleyart dudleyart@outlook.co.nz

Pelagic Asset Integrity Constant travel for work may be a luxury for some and a perk for others, but after several years of crossing borders and today’s current climate, mates Neil and Chris decided that it was time to ground their specialised and niche skillsets at home on NZ shores. The Pelagic boys perform a service known as Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) on various structures and components such as helicopter blades, welded pipelines or a simple vehicle suspension arm, by utilising various techniques and advanced technology like digital radiography and specialised drones. This is used to ensure compliance to code and prevent catastrophic failure by finding any defect or anomaly prior to it becoming a major issue. Neil and Chris are experienced industrial rope access techs as well, so their expertise is not limited to the deck, and offer a range of professional abseil services. The spectrum of services Pelagic offers does not end there. Having experience in macro photography, high definition editing and professional software, the boys decided to utilise those skills further by offering visual creation packages focusing on the commercial

and consumer markets along the lines of real estate, events and personal or business promotion for Instagram and Facebook. This is when Luke Potts of Aquatic Rehab Spearfishing joined the Pelagic crew. Luke has amassed a large worldwide following due to his impeccable attention to detail and ability to create epic visuals. This is where the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems or RPAS (Drone) division shines. Being professional RPAS pilots, the crew can take their creations to another level. Having RPAS certification enables legal drone flight in areas where most cannot fly, such as the entire Matakana and Omaha area. The Story Boards of Tanya McCabe Snells Beach local, Tanya McCabe creates colourful, quirky, whimsical, abstracts that make her smile. She loves to create harmony and conflict between colours, shapes and form that all generate an energy giving her work life.

From an early age Tanya recalls “ being a daydreamer” watching clouds transform into creatures, finding weird faces in old fashioned wall paper and imagining all sorts of weird and wonderful things. As an adult not much has changed except she now captures daydreams in visual diaries and treats them as her seed banks of ideas and thoughts for future projects. Inspiration comes in many forms, from the vibrant colours of a sunset, the sassy body language of a cat or the lines that divide land and how they all relate. Tanya also finds her ancestry full of mystery, curiosity and rich in diversity. With Maori, Tongan and Scottish roots, she is inspired by their patterns and stories. Each creation is a combination of vibrant colours, layered with intricate texture elements and patterns using acrylics and mixed media on canvas or board. Tanya

describes her art as a feast for the eyes. At first glance it's often hard to take it all in. A bit like a smorgasbord with many delicious morsels to savour. You find yourself on a journey following elements within her paintings, contrasting colours playfully leading you to discover little nuggets of a story hiding in the composition. Each time you look, you see something new. Creating art is an important part of Tanya’s health and wellbeing. Over the years, creativity has become a great tool to help her navigate life's challenges. A safe place to tune out reality, allowing her to process emotions, thoughts and feelings. Be it good or bad, they all have relevance in her creations, giving her work depth. Whenever Tanya paints, she doesn't always have an idea of what it is she wants to create, but more a feeling or an emotion to release.

New Zealand Made Art Crafts & Gifts 2km past Matakana Round about at Matakana Village

Tanya usually has at least 20 to 30 works on the go at any time, allowing her to pick up and put down whatever her emotions dictate. Most of her paintings have evolved over months or years, each the result of many emotions and thoughts being artistically expressed. “Best therapy ever,” says Tanya. She likes to think of her art as stepping stones in her never ending artistic journey and feels blessed for every day she gets to create. Tanya is one of about 30 artists opening their studios to the public for the Mahurangi Artists Studio Trail, from 24-26 October. Moral Fibres: Janna Isbey Janna Isbey is an artist and designer living at Leigh, having grown up in Algies Bay on the Mahurangi East peninsula. After spending 20 years living in various places around the globe she is finding her equilibrium living on the landscape closest to her heart. Environment is central to her life as an artist and maker.

a business Janna is establishing honouring handmade textiles - highlighting Japanese Shibori, Indian block printing and eco printing/dyeing with botanical and mineral based pigments.

A new chapter opened up five years ago when Janna reignited a connection to her creativity, and jumped back into the student life studying painting and experimental textiles at AUT in Auckland. Janna has spent the last few years exploring the wide and fascinating realm of handmade textile design traveling to Japan, India, Guatemala and Bali to explore techniques that hold within them the legacy of craftsmanship and important, not to be forgotten, stories of tradition.

In a world of fast-paced mass production Janna is passionate about taking a slower, intention based approach creating small batch crafted textiles that are timeless, with a commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. The fabrics are transformed by artist hands using natural materials, dyes and methods that infuse a unique sense of energy that is beautiful to look at and intuitively healthy and uplifting for the body and soul. She runs textile design workshops, collaborates with individuals and designers to develop highly original textiles as well as creating her own custom made pieces for her ‘Wild & Indigo’ label.

Janna is constantly inspired by the ephemeral quality of our relationship with nature, and the storytelling that unfolds through hands on fabrics. Wild & Indigo is

In a similar vein Janna’s painting practise seeks to explore landscapes caught in flux, to use site specific natural pigments, and inks activating a thoughtful exchange with

the environment. She is interested in being in collaboration with various ecological elements and non living components that imprint and mark, recording a collection of experiences or encounters that play with the passage of time. Through abstract and intuitive making, Janna examines an emotive response to transitioning landscapes and the reckoning of impermanence. As an art maker Janna is considering the importance of what it might mean to sense oneself in a place or landscape, to keenly associate with an environment of personal and community value. The Art of Shibori Words Janna Isbey

Japanese Shibori is an ancient textile technique dating back to the 8th century. Traditionally, a white cloth (usually silk, hemp, or cotton) was folded, bunched, tied and stitched, and finally dipped into a natural indigo dye. Today we use all sorts of dyes to achieve these amazingly varied and well defined designs. The process can be extremely meditative, and quite exciting as you never know exactly how the pattern will turn out, although outcomes can be a surprise they are usually happy surprises. Remember when you are dyeing use natural fibre fabrics that are prewashed, this will help the fabric absorb the

colour. It’s great fun to experiment with plant dyes like indigo, avocado or onion skins or use safe synthetic dyes like Procion or Deka which come in a wide range of colours.

it between two objects of the same or similar

One shibori technique that is easy to try at home is called ‘Itajime’, it is a shape-resist method that produces geometric shapes like triangles, squares and circles. Be resourceful when binding – use clamps, pegs, clips, popsicle or chopsticks, odd shaped wooden pieces, canning jar lids or string and rubber bands. There is no right or wrong way to Shibori!

shape and size. This allows the dye to only penetrate the edges of the folded cloth,

leaving contrasting un-dyed sections once Janna Isbey is a textile artist and owner of Wild & Indigo. With an ethos for eco-

conscious handcrafted textiles for the body and home, she works with natural colour

and a touch of alchemic magic. She also runs courses through venues such as Totem Retreat.

Courses to Inspire Creativity The Women’s Centre Rodney is a drop-in centre for women in Warkworth, offering counselling, support groups, legal advice, lunchtime lectures, health clinics advocacy and crisis support. In conjunction with these services, a variety of creative courses are held throughout the year, hosted by a mix of experienced and knowledgeable local tutors in the arts. These are held in various locations around Warkworth including the picturesque Kourawhero Hall, original artist studios and the Anglican Church Hall. Courses running throughout this year include Clay Workshops, Flax Weaving and Creative Painting. Emma Zhang from Rui Rui Ceramics hosts the day long clay workshop at her studio. Here she will take you through a host of techniques including pinch pots, sculptural works and decorative patterns. Glazing and wheel work are included. Flax weaving is run by two very experienced weavers, Britta Conrad and Rosanne Davies. These are run either in half day or full day blocks and students learn the tikanga (customs) around working with flax, how to harvest it and will learn how to make a bunch of flowers and a basket to take home. Creative Expression Through Painting is run by Art Therapist Tiina Power in a day long session. She works through painting techniques and creates a peaceful space in which the student can explore the medium of watercolour in a soul fulfilling experience. Courses in term three have been hugely popular so participants are encouraged to book early through their website’s registration page to secure a spot. A Woven Journey It was on her first visit to the Titirangi Market that Britta saw a Kete (basket) made from Harakeke (New Zealand flax) and she immediately fell in love! This was 30 years ago and little did she know then that this encounter had laid the seed for her creative journey. Britta immigrated from Germany and in her homeland she had enjoyed crafts like knitting, spinning, macramé and bead weaving. Therefore it’s no wonder she got itchy fingers and was keen to give flax weaving (Raranga) a go. This occurred in 1999 when she attended a weekend workshop in Pakiri with Nan Morrison and later when she moved to Mangawhai, where she met her mentor, Debbie Stone, who taught her for many years. With ten years of experience under her belt, Britta decided to pursue one year of training in Raranga through North Tec. In Horeke, Hokianga she absorbed the deep knowledge offered by her Maori teacher and learnt the making of Taniko (borders on cloaks), Tukutuku panels (wall panels in meeting houses), pelting (the removal of bird’s skins to preserve their feathers) and of course the weaving of Kete, mats and belts. Britta had to leave her career in hospitality after having suffered a work injury, and so her hobby turned into a passionate career. This coincided well with the raised awareness by New Zealanders of our plastic waste problem. Always enthusiastic about caring

for the environment Britta, like other weavers, developed an alternative to the plastic bag. Changing a basic square basket into a rectangle shape and attaching handles, turned it into a shopping Kete. These bags are made from fresh leaves and are durable, strong and 100% biodegradable. “Aotearoa is blessed to have this wonderful resource, which can be used to create many products, replacing plastic items,” she says. In her little cottage by the estuary she produces baskets for everyday use, like laundry, or storing kumara and onions. Her designs are contemporary, based on traditional Maori techniques and concepts. You can find her at the Mangawhai Tavern Market, Titirangi Market (coming full circle), Smales Farm and Coatesville Markets. Britta also offers weaving workshops in Mangawhai and surrounding areas. These are half-day workshops where you can learn to make your own Waikawa Basket. She feels humbled and blessed to help keep the tradition alive and makes sure to pass on the Tikanga, the protocol relating to working with Harakeke. Her vision is “to see everybody in Aotearoa using a shopping Kete and making it a true Kiwi Icon”. Britta with be showing her work at the Mangawhai Artists' Exhibition on 27 August for two weeks. www.instagram.com/harakekebasketry silbri9@gmail.com

Artistic Endeavours Q&A with Christine Didsbury, Brick Bay

What is the driver behind your interest in the New Zealand creative sector?

Can you describe the other creative initiatives you have established at Brick Bay?

Outside the Matakana area, what other creative initiatives are you most proud of?

We are passionate about supporting creative New Zealanders, not only by establishing a collection of art, but in taking it to the next level and assisting this talented pool of people to sustain full-time employment in their various fields.

From our development at Matakana Village, The Glass House and our own home at Brick Bay, architectural excellence has always been a passion of ours. The Brick Bay Folly Project seeks to identify young architects to showcase their creative abilities in designing a ‘folly’ and it’s been a joy to follow, over the last six years, the subsequent careers of these future stars of New Zealand architecture!

We are both very proud of the enduring success of the unique Vero foyer in the city’s Shortland Street, which is a broad celebration of New Zealand’s creativity. The Wall of Words is a powerful expression of what it is to be a kiwi.

How does the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail fit in this vision? Over decades, we’ve seen many inspirational international examples of sculpture parks but felt rather than establishing a static collection, we wanted to infuse this beautiful landscape at Brick Bay with a dynamic collection of New Zealand’s best sculptures, all for sale. To enable many of these amazing sculptures to be realised, we also established a Charitable Trust to offer interest-free funding for the often costly materials involved in their creation.

Tell us about the new Nohonga initiative? We are fortunate to be living in a stunning rural landscape but the majority of Aucklanders live in an increasingly dense urban setting where the public realm needs to be a stimulating environment. The Nohonga project will showcase five uplifting urban interventions over the summer.

More recently Richard has been instrumental in shaping a new community at Hobsonville Point, with a focus around enlivening its public spaces. Extensive public walkways are punctuated by significant sculptures and he was humbled by its recent naming as The Didsbury Art Trail. Where to from here? We firmly believe that the creative sector enriches our society and we certainly intend to give our support where we can. www.brickbay.co.nz

A Creative Conscience In this latest round of workshops, Zero Waste Matakana founder Josie Jackson has found some incredibly talented local creatives, businesses and caterers to bring everyone a vast range of workshops.

Formed back in 2017 to help with New Zealand's push to get rid of the plastic bag, Zero Waste Matakana Coast started out by sewing hundreds of reusable bags, with sewers from all over the Mahurangi area for the local community to use. Then came the produce bags, beeswax wraps, DIY cleaners and skincare and before long an annual workshop series was created. To start off the latest workshops series, local Mangawhai weaver Britta from Harakeke Basketry will be running a five hour workshop teaching the skills and techniques to make your own market basket with the bonus enjoyment of a grazing table of local delicacies from the Village Picnic. Sunday 20 September 1-6pm and Thursday 24 September 9.30am-2.30pm at the Matakana Hall, $90 per person. Ness from Kiwiness Tours is hosting two school holiday tours for us at our local regional park Tawharanui. Get an insider's guide to the park: see and identify some of New Zealand's most endangered birds, learn

about the flora and fauna and get to enjoy one of Ness’s famous hot chocolate and cookie combo. Spot prizes too! Thursday 1 October 9.30-10.30am ( 5 and under ) and 11am-1pm ( 6 and above) at Tawharanui Regional Park. Cost $10 per person, includes a $5 koha to TOSSI Under the skilled direction of Pigment’s founders and artists, Rachel and Abi will teach the art of upcycling on ceramics. Each attendee will have a go at a geometric design and a still life onto vintage ceramics, taking their masterpieces home along with a set of ceramic marker pens. Sunday 4 October 3-4pm in Matakana Village. $65 per person. Renowned local ceramic artist Vicki Fanning’s workshop offers the opportunity to decorate and glaze your very own 2 Frolic ‘keep cups’ followed by a plant-based lunch from local caterer Alma Wholefoods. Wednesday 14 October 10am-2pm. $85 per person.

Nuku founder, Karen Williamson will teach you the art of dying with natural materials, create your own dyed silk scarf using seeds and plants or an indigo dyed and stitch wall hanging. Scaling it Forward On a north-facing block on Scotts Landing peninsula sits this exceptional home by architect Malcolm Walker. Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

Its main structure is made up by 41 tilt slab concrete panels – put together in a day-anda-half, according to owners Beth and Richard Kirkwood. Despite it being a large house, it took only nine months to finish.

“This was the first concrete house that Malcolm Walker constructed, so they had to do a lot of research,” Richard says. “But they’ve been asked to do several more!”

"It is very common in Europe, but when the house was built in 2011, it was only starting to come into New Zealand," Richard says.

The concrete slabs were made in Takanini, some of them weighing up to 12 tons each.

Another standout feature is the interior timber and glass finishes, with the solid timber floors being reclaimed native Matai wood.

"Since we have a lot of the concrete in the interior, it was important to us that they were all going to be the same shade of grey," says Richard.

Fishing is a favourite pastime for the Kirkwoods. The property has its own boat ramp – and there is an abundance of snapper just outside the house!

“It’s an expensive type of building, but it doesn’t require any maintenance inside or outside, so your long-term costs are very low,” Richard says.

"If you made them outside, you could end up with some in lighter grey and some in darker, because of the difference in air temperature. So to ensure the concrete slabs were all in the same shade of grey, each one was in a heated container."

The environment, and especially native trees, is something that they are passionate about too.

Beth and Richard’s son was an architect with Malcolm Walker, and a great help in solving the heating matters.

With such unique design ahead of its time, it was perhaps not surprising that the council had a problem with the structure.

“We chose to build in concrete, because we wanted a house with less maintenance – and we also wanted to see if we could halve our heating bill,” says Richard. Concrete absorbs the heat and then releases it during the evening. So the house is essentially recycling the warm weather and transferring it into the house.

“I have always admired the Mahurangi nature,” says Richard. “We have probably put in 1,000 trees on this block, which has been extremely rewarding.” www.malcolmwalker.co.nz www.bayleys.co.nz/1221772

We are certified reef-safe, cruelty free, non-GMO and dermatologist tested for sensitive, eczema-prone and problem skin. Formulated by Registered nurse, naturopath, medical herbalist and concerned Mum, Jules Bright from Mangawhai, who stubbonly pushed through an industry telling her it’s impossible and achieved a world first next-level sunscreen! EK doesn’t sting your eyes at all, stays on your skin in a silky soft way, is 2hrs+ water resistant, doesn’t take the paint off your boat or car like many sunscreens do! This

is why it has created a buzz in the boating, fishing and surfing community too. Plus snowboarders and skiers have raved that one application keeps them protected daylong on the slopes! Planned to Perfection Whether you’re subdividing, adding a minor dwelling, creating a glamping site or turning that quaint old barn into a rustic wedding venue, when it comes to developing your property the regulatory landscape can be confusing. Photo LTD Architectural Design

From the overlapping district and regional plans, to resource management and planning legislation, it can feel like the rules are never ending, and the list of experts and interested parties to be consulted just keeps growing. That’s where planning consultants come in. If your development is commercial, residential, coastal, rural or mixed use – and yes, that covers pretty much everything - it’s likely you’ll need specialist planning advice. Why engage a planning consultant?

To make the most of your site, it’s best to engage a planning consultant early in the pre-design phase, sometimes before you even purchase the property. A planning consultant will consider all the relevant rules for your site and your project,

advise on what you can and can’t do, and help you seamlessly navigate the resource consent process from start to finish. Sound planning advice at the outset of your project can save you tens of thousands later on, by identifying potential ‘sticky issues’ that could cause project delays. With urban subdivisions, you’ll need to consider access to services like water, stormwater and wastewater. On rural land you may need to obtain a geotechnical report, protect native vegetation and carry out riparian planting. You should also read the property title carefully, but if there are restrictive covenants or consent notices attached to your site, this doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. You can apply to amend these restrictions as part of the consent process. Your consultant can also advise on environmental effects assessment and gather expert evidence to support your application. Depending on the scale and complexity

of your project, you may need to obtain specialist advice from ecologists, landscape architects, civil and geotechnical engineers, acoustic engineers, archaeologists or surveyors. Resource Planning Inc. has a network of trusted experts who provide quality advice in these specialist fields. Junction Award Winner 2020 - Brick Bay Since 1986, Brick Bay’s beloved landscape has inspired their goal “to nurture and care for this precious place into the future”. “Environmental stewardship, imagining beauty, achieving intergenerational growth” has been the mantra that serves them well, and has brought them to this place of excellence. From the pastures and vineyards to the epic art collections, Brick Bay has been a beacon of excellence in the local area and gained a much loved following along the way. When the first Covid-19 lockdown was upon them, they went “from a humming and fully booked visitor-based business to zero overnight,” said General Manager Anna Didsbury, creating “a huge challenge”. “Fortunately as a MPI certified primary

producer we were able to harvest our 2020 wine vintage during the first lockdown. We managed this with an onsite team who lived and worked in their own bubble.”

inputs and outputs of our restaurant, farm, sculpture trail, olives, and honey along with being a certified sustainable vineyard,” says Anna.

And what a team they have! “It's a priority for us that people on our Brick Bay team embody our values, one of which is: ‘Be an enthusiast’. This means, we’re excited about what we do and we’re on a mission to share our loved landscape filled with ideas.”

A hub for visitors and locals alike, the support they have received throughout this unpredictable year has been “really emotional and quite humbling”.

As an employer of more than 40 local people, whom they ensure that they “nurture and grow”, they also feel fortunate to be well supplied and serviced by wonderful local businesses, stocking and using local products when and where they can. “We take responsibility to carefully manage and continually improve the environmental

OVERALL RUNNER UP NEW WORLD WARKWORTH “When we were faced with the initial COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lock down our focus was the safety and wellbeing of every individual who came in contact with our store,” says New World Warkworth’s owner/operator, Anna Carmichael. Overnight we were required to change many systems and processes that impact on the overall look and feel of the store. The more obvious changes were security at the entry door, screens at checkouts and limits on the number of individuals in store at any one time. “One of the keys for us throughout this time was looking after our loyal team who worked tirelessly as essential workers. Their bravery has made us, and we hope our community, proud.” New World Warkworth has been at its current site for 22 years, employing over 200 people. The continued support of the local community has always been vital to their success and so in turn they are avid supporters of local community groups and giving back to the community through sponsorship and donations. They also support local business by stocking local products and produce – a win win for all. "We love to support local as local supports us. We live in an amazing community and are incredibly honoured to be nominated for a Junction Award." 09 425 1040 | 6 Percy Street, Warkworth

PEOPLES CHOICE - SMALL BUSINESS WINNER - THE KNITTING TRUCK

Runners up:

The Knitting Truck team feels honoured and grateful to be supported by the local community, especially in this testing time. “We are all passionate about the New Zealand wool industry and work hard to support it by primarily stocking locally manufactured yarn from New Zealand producers and independent artisan dyers,” says owner Ann. “We are all passionate hand knitters, learning new techniques from each other and often have very differing views about how to knit this or that (more animated debate). We love supporting others to knit and all get delight from both adults and children learning something new.” This little shop is a calm, joyful, colourful space where we cherish and share our craft.

EXCELLENCE IN MARKETING

WINNER - MATAKANA VILLAGE FARMERS' MARKET Matakana Village Farmers’ Market was founded on one simple premise: local people, selling locally produced food. Central to the market philosophy is food provenance, so at the weekly market you know the person selling the produce had a hand in growing or making it too. In 2017 the market became ‘Zero Waste’ meeting another goal which ties back to values in sustainability.

Runners up:

When COVID-19 hit they had to move quickly to establish a non-contact version of the weekly market and an online store was created. Orders rolled in, continuing the support of local producers and growers whose livelihoods depend on the market.

SUSTAINABILITY SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS WINNER - THE KNITTING TRUCK

Runners up:

Hand knitting is by nature a sustainable practice. The Knitting Truck primarily stocks natural fibres that are produced in New Zealand and are unapologetic for refusing to carry acrylic yarn (which sheds micro fibres into the waterways when washed). Their packaging is all made from recycled materials, and the new tiny house knitting truck runs on solar power, totally off-grid! “Our sustainable practices have been unaffected by COVID-19, however it has got us thinking of new ways in which we can further champion transparency and accountability of our supply chains,” says owner Ann Dewey. “We aim to keep everything as local as possible!”

Chrysalis Jars Chrysalis Jars is a new bulk foods company in Mangawhai, with a difference. Becca and Rhiannon are both avid bulk binners, as well as being advocates for living a low waste life. They met in Auckland where they both worked as early childhood educators at the same centre. After many years, lots of conversations and a move to a new town, they are beginning a new venture. The idea came about after many chats on long car rides, lugging bags and jars to go and bulk bin in other towns. Becca and Rhiannon believed there was a need for something like this in Mangawhai, a community with a growing awareness to live low waste lifestyles while reducing single use plastics. So what makes it different? Chrysalis Jars is run through an ordering system. They believe

that there is nothing quite like the feeling of receiving a package of surprises, delivered straight to your door. They decided to jar up this feeling of joy and hand it straight to their customers, creating a simple and hassle free way to add to your low waste life. They package up the bulk goods for you and deliver to your door. You purchase the product and the jar. When you return your jar, you swap it for another, just paying for the product in your next order. Returning the jars is as simple as leaving them on your front doorstep on delivery day when you get a new order. Becca and Rhiannon are passionate about providing goods that help others create delicious, nutritious meals and treats that fuel your body. Just like a chrysalis changing internally to eventually emerge as a butterfly.

They hope that by providing this hassle free service, people find more time to create hearty meals that nourish the body and in turn transform. Although it is just early days at Chrysalis Jars, Becca and Rhiannon would love to one day transform this small business into a shop, not only selling bulk food goods but also provide options for environmentally friendly home and beauty products too. For now Becca and Rhiannon say their short term goal is to grow their customer base in Mangawhai with hopes to slowly expand and deliver to other small towns that don't have this service available. www.instagram.com/chrysalisjars www.facebook.com/ChrysalisJars-112032507255513

Mood Boosting With today’s current global headlines, it is easy to understand why someone would experience a shift in their mood. However, there is more to consider for low mood and how to boost it naturally. Kim Campbell - The Matakana Naturopath, shares her insights and tips for boosting your mood.

Serotonin and Dopamine These are the key neurotransmitters for mood. If levels are low, there is a high chance the mood may be also. For the body to produce serotonin and dopamine it requires several nutrients: tryptophan, phenylalanine, zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium and vitamins B3, B6 and C. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can result in reduced production of these ‘happy hormones’. A mood boosting meal containing all the nutrients to support the production of serotonin can be made for breakfast: avocado on sourdough toast, with poached egg, anchovy, chilli and lemon. Endorphins These are your natural ‘pain relief’ and ‘feel good’ hormones produced during joyful activities. Moderate exercise, watching funny videos, laughing, eating chocolate and drinking wine can all increase endorphins. So, if low mood is associated with pain, increasing endorphins should be a priority.

Magnesium Magnesium is one of the first nutrients to be depleted during times of stress and is required for the neurotransmitters that are associated with mood. Magnesium comes in many forms including supplementation, Epsom Salts and topical gels or through foods such as cashew nuts, avocados and dark chocolate. Soaking in a warm bath filled with Epsom Salts and indulging in chocolate coated cashews is a great way to get your dose of magnesium and boost the mood! Vitamin D Although classed as a vitamin, vitamin D is in fact a hormone. It is produced by UVB rays from the sun touching the skin and converting into cholecalciferol by the liver and kidneys. As hormones are chemical messengers within the body, vitamin D helps to support the communication for each hormone. A deficiency in vitamin D has been linked to many health conditions including depression. Getting outside and exposing the face, neck

and arms to the sun for 20-30mins daily can help to restore vitamin D levels while elevating the mood. Thymoleptics These are a class of herbs used in both conventional and complementary medicine known as euphorics or ‘mood elevators’. Herbs such as oat grain and seed, coffee, Siberian ginseng, lavender, lemon balm, St. John’s wort and damiana are all used within herbal medicine to help boost the mood naturally. Kim is a registered Naturopath combining evidence-based science with traditional healing practices to find natural solutions for common health concerns. With a special interest in mood, stress and hormones, she creates individualised treatments using herbal tinctures, teas and nutrition for a sustainable approach to health. hello@thematakananaturopath.com www.instagram.com/thematakananaturopath

How to Stay Stylish at Any Age

Timeless pieces are those certain essentials that will carry you through changing trends, seasons and occasions. Build your closet on a streamlined selection of items to make day-to-day dressing infinitely easier. A stylish woman knows what and how to combine, it's all about making unusual outfits from usual things! Choose your items well, buy the highest quality you can afford and with clever styling, you will always look stylish, timeless and well put together. These key pieces listed below are not subject to time, trend or geography. They are equally essential in New York, London, Paris or Warkworth! And will be worn for years to come. The White (or off white) Shirt. Choose a classic style, crisp cotton with a collar or a soft chiffon with a bow, that suits your figure and complexion and wear it every time you “have nothing to wear”. The Classic Denim. High-waisted, dark wash, wide-leg or classic boot cut, choose a pair you feel sexy and comfortable in while wearing them with sneakers or high heels. Be particular of the brand you are supporting as mass production carries an environmental impact. The Blazer. Fitted or oversized, in black or colour, this structured style jacket should become a big part of your everyday wardrobe, giving you a sophisticated, smart edge. The Little Black Dress. The ‘LBD’ can be worn at any event and always looks appropriate and

stylish. Carefully select a cut that flatters your figure and your unique sense of style.

stretch material, will ensure you always have something to wear.

The Killer Heels. Choose a heel height and shape that complements your bone structure. They go with everything in your wardrobe and give the instant illusion of longer legs. Say goodbye to that painful ache, as the perfect pair will make you feel like you're wearing flats!

The Leather Bag. Classic and elegant? Or a statement piece to elevate your outfits? It’s your choice! A fabulous hands-free, fit-all leather bag will stay in style forever.

The Cashmere Jumper. Effortlessly chic and super comfortable. Choose a colour that complements your wardrobe: navy, grey or oatmeal (or one of each!) will carry you through from autumn to spring. The Tailored Trouser. They are a great foundation of any outfit, find a cut that flatters your body in a non-crease material and pick your favourite colour: black, navy, chocolate or grey. The Leather Jacket. Choose a ‘biker’ style for a rock-chick look. In this instance, better quality equals a greater price tag. For cruelty-free supporters, we suggest opting for a classic denim instead. The White Sneakers (aka lifestyle shoes). The perfect trans-seasonal footwear choice that dresses down any dress or skirt outfit. Gosh, I cannot believe I'm saying this... The Pencil Skirt. Most female shapes suit this classic item, which ends around the knees or lower (think Victoria Beckham). Investing in a good quality one, ideally made of

The Signature Ring. Express your style and personality with this accessory. White or yellow gold, anything goes as far as it represents who you are. If rings are not your thing, opt for diamond or pearl studs (and yes, they can be fake). The Silk Scarf. Stripes, polka dots, geometric patterns, bright colours or monochromatic. Choose the one that speaks to you and gives you ‘love at first sight’. The Ankle Boots. Invest in a mid-height heel so that you can dress them up or down. You can opt for metallic or animal print to jazz up otherwise plain outfits. Katya Maker specialises in personal styling and shopping. Pakiri School

Students from Pakiri School report on their latest news, events and stories.

PET DAY TRADITIONS Words Joe Cooper Pakiri School’s annual Pet Day started in 1961 to celebrate our rural community. The inside sculptures also began that year, judged on patterns and shapes that added interests. The inside food competition started in 1976 and the lucky judges would taste the winning dishes. Pet Day was never about money, it was only about pets. My mum got ‘Champion Lamb’ against a lot of other kids. The Silent Auction, Hangi and Raffle started in 1985 when we started raising money for the school. In 2009, they didn't taste the food anymore...it was judged on looks alone. Most recent are the outside games, which started only five years ago. What will 2020 bring to Pet Day - come and see for yourself!

BEE POLLINATOR FRIENDLY Words Zadie Settle Grass from Beetopia is teaching children at Pakiri School about bees and pollination. A teacher for 25 years in Italy, she thought it would be great to get children involved with pollinators, so they could look at bees differently, and not to be afraid of them. There is so much to learn about bees! Thanks to Grass’ amazing teaching we are enthusiastic enough to plant our own school garden to attract more bees, and other pollinators in our environment.
