SNELLS BEACH ANIMATED MOVIE TO HIT THE BIG SCREENS WORDS
Some world-class creativity is taking place right under our very noses in this seaside slice of paradise. As we go about our everyday activities of dropping kids to school, heading through our infamous Hill Street intersection to the big smoke or simply sipping our lattes at Little & Local, we may be unaware of the creative hub that is nestled down Goodall Road. This won’t last for long though, as this creative corner is about to embrace the world’s spotlight in a massive way. From Thursday 10 October, we will have the opportunity to marvel at the latest creation to come fresh from Huhu Animation Studios and be screened at our local Matakana Cinemas and cinemas throughout New Zealand. Executive Producer Trevor Yaxley has worked tirelessly to form a first-ever New Zealand/China

animated co-production that is sure to be a real treat for ages eight to 80+ who will be given a chance to see why heavyweights from around the world have been so excited to work on the 3D animated feature film ‘Mosley’. ‘Mosley’ is an adventure centred around an intelligent but unfortunate four-legged ‘Thoriphant’ who is living a life of servitude on an isolated farm with a harsh master. In an attempt to seek answers and also for his family to live in freedom, Mosley must embark on an epic journey filled with peril, mystery and surprising twists. It is a beautifully crafted tale of victory through realising one’s potential within, discovering who one is meant to be and standing up for what you believe in. And of course, with the likes of Rhys Darby voicing the character ‘Deaver’, you can bet
that there will be some good ol’ Kiwi humour in the mix. Other voice talents in the film are none other than Temuera Morrison, Lucy Lawless and John Rhys-Davies. The calibre of creatives working on this film is truly extraordinary – including its writer and director Kirby Atkins (Weta Digital animator contributing to ‘The BFG’, ‘The Smurfs’, ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ and ‘VeggieTales’), editor Kathy Toon (having worked on ‘Finding Dory’, ‘Toy Story 4’, ‘Rio’, ‘Horton Hears a Who’ and Academy Award nominated short film ‘Borrowed Time’), executive producer Tony Bancroft (director of Disney’s ‘Mulan’ and an animator on ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’), and animation director Manuel Aparicio (Dreamworks and Disney

animator known for his work on ‘Moana’, ‘Kung Fu Panda’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Zootopia’). The dedicated team behind this 96-minute collaboration of heart, passion and talent are excited at what they have accomplished. “Films like this are a huge feat and it is astonishing that a film of this depth and quality could come out of Snells Beach,” says editor Kathy Toon. This multi-million-dollar film had the local Huhu Studios booming with close to 100 people at the height of its production. Kirby Atkin’s 15-year labour of love is finally coming to completion and everyone involved can be proud of the effort and hours that have gone into seeing this dream come to life.
Warkworth local, chief technical officer and producer, Bill Boyce reflects, “We’ve had to be resourceful and pool together to pull off an independent film that is comparable to Hollywood films with much bigger budgets. This story has got a huge amount of heart and a great message underpinning it.”
ground-breaking Kiwi animated movie.
Local artist Markus Kristensen, the ‘Mosley’ production designer and cinematographer, says “This has been the biggest, most complicated and most creatively satisfying project to work on. We’ve really had to pull together to achieve something that was way beyond anything we’ve ever done before.”
If our funny-man Rhys is anything to go by, then you just know that this movie is going to be a goodie so make sure you don’t miss out on seeing ‘Mosley’ and supporting our local talent.

Admitting he may have shed a tear or two while watching a scene from the film, Rhys Darby is excited that New Zealand is producing another stand-out animated film. “I found the story quite emotive and it’s so exciting to be part of a really cool Kiwi animation.”

PROFILE
LIFE ON AN EVEN KEEL WORDS
I suggest to Terry McDell, world champion sailor, the two strong strands in his life are law and yachting. “Yachting and yachting!” he laughs. Terry was born in Waipu and his father was a mad keen yachtie. “Dad and my brother, Kim, built a P-Class in the backyard and I sailed that at the Onerahi Yacht Club.” When the family moved to Auckland, Terry’s father bought the boys a Zephyr. “It was a good one," says Terry, fondly. “School holidays were spent on the water – out to Rangitoto and back, and all over the harbour.” Terry progressed to OK Dinghies, Finns and the Flying Dutchman. However, being too small for the Finn and not having enough money to pursue the Flying Dutchman, Terry spent time crewing on his father’s 40-foot keel boat. “My brother and I ended up sailing in the One-ton Cup when it was

held in Auckland, back in 1971.” Soon after, having just finished his law degree, Terry joined the crew of the 73-foot, black racing yacht, Buccaneer. “We raced to Noumea and then sailed via Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, to then competed in the Transpac race from Los Angeles to Hawaii.” On his return to Auckland, Terry began work as a law clerk and started racing an 18-footer with his brother Kim. “We sailed that boat for two seasons, got progressively better and Travelodge agreed to sponsor us into a new Bruce Farr-designed boat. We trained every day with Bruce following us around in his runabout. The world series was held in New Zealand that year and everything came together for us, and we won.” In 1987, Terry was invited to join the three-boat Admiral’s Cup team that New Zealand was putting
together. “They wanted a tactitian and someone to keep the young bucks under control,” laughs Terry. “We won it! The first and only time New Zealand has won the Admiral’s Cup,” he says with obvious pride. Law was always the means to an end for Terry. “Around 20 years ago, I was working as a partner in the city, but I decided there was more to life than working in a law office so I sold my yacht and bought another in Greece. I took off with my wife and two young daughters and spent 18 months cruising the Greek islands.” When Terry returned to Auckland, he began working with Wynyard Wood Lawyers. That was the beginning of a long and enjoyable career with the firm that continues to this day.

Terry works out of the Warkworth office now, having moved to Mangawhai four years ago, and he is still as keen as ever to get out on the water. “I’m still sailing a 16-foot Contender, a one man trapeze yacht. When the tide’s in, I get about two hours worth of sailing before I start hitting the sand. I also have opportunities to go and crew on other guys’ boats.” I ask him what’s left on the bucket list. “If I had my way, I’d be cruising around the Greek islands right now. There’s plenty of islands I didn’t get to and I’m quite happy to go and revisit the ones I did get to. I just have to make it happen.” 09 422 2190 www.wynyardwood.co.nz

NEW & NOTED LOCAL TRAIL BLAZER: TRISH ALLEN Matakana resident, Trish Allen, has won the title of ‘Trail Blazer’ at the 2019 Auckland Community Zero Waste Awards ahead of eight other nominees. The award recognises her long commitment to zero waste, her passion for waste education and going above and beyond to share all things zero waste with the local community. Trish is dedicating the award to all the people who support Mahurangi Wastebusters’ vision to reduce waste, and who have helped setting up the community recycling centres at Lawrie Road, Snells Beach and Rustybrook Road, Wellsford. She says visiting and learning from other sites like Raglan’s Xtreme Zero Waste centre and then being able to share this knowledge, has been instrumental in achieving the award, and she is confident our local centres will have the same success over time. hello@mahurangiwastebusters.nz www.mahurangiwastebusters.nz

WARKWORTH HOCKEY CLUB The new Warkworth Hockey Club had a fantastic first season with two teams competing in the North Harbour Club Winter Tournament. The men’s team smashed through their divison one grade with 48 points, making the final versus Takapuna Black. It was a ripper of a game where they held some great possession but unfortunately couldn't capitalise.

GARDEN AND RURAL LIVING
PLANTING CLEAN AND GREEN
It’s an exciting time for gardeners. The days are starting to get a bit longer and it’s time to plan your garden for the warmer weather coming. Even though it’s still cool, seeds sown now will be ready late September and early October. Check out seed catalogues, on-line, (Italian Seeds Pronto has an interesting range), garden centres and home improvement stores for a good range of seeds. Be sure to check the expiry date on the back of the packet! Prepare the garden beds by digging in some home made organic compost and adding organic sheep pellets which will help replenish the nutrients used by previous crops. If planting potatoes for Spring, now is a good time to chit your tubers. Find the variety that you like, soak for a few minutes in a strong seaweed
solution and place in egg cartons in a warm light place. When the shoots are about 5cm long, and the chance of heavy frost is over, it is time to plant them in trenches. Carrots, parsnips and radishes need to be sown directly as they don’t transplant well, but you can plant out seedlings of beetroot, lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, rocket and other leafy greens. Herb gardens can be refreshed with new plants but hold off from planting out basil until it warms up a bit more. Spring and Summer flowering annuals such as calendula, sweet peas, alyssum, cornflower etc. can be planted. Not only will they add colour but they will attract beneficial insects and pollinators into your garden helping to fight pests and increase your yields naturally. Keep an eye on the weeds around winter planted
garlic, they hate competition! Apply a weekly seaweed liquid to encourage good growth. Other tasks include feeding and mulching fruit trees, roses (which can now be pruned too), shrubs and flower beds. For more gardening tips and information check out Organic Seedlings’ weekly 'webisodes' at www.organicediblegarden.co.nz Organic seedlings are available from New World Warkworth, Four Square Matakana, direct from their nursery Fridays and from 7 September they will be returning to Matakana Village Farmers’ Market every Saturday from 8am-1pm. www.organicseedlings.co.nz www.facebook.com/Organic-HerbsSeedlings-123114634435469

PERFECT POTTING BROUGHT HOME A NEW MORRIS & JAMES POT? HERE ARE A FEW TIPS FROM THE ADDING THE PERFECT PLANT TO IT. WWW.MORRISANDJAMES.CO.NZ
Choose a plant that complements the glaze, size and style of your pot.
Peace lilies can tolerate short dry spells but keep the soil moist and do not over water. Keep out of drafts and direct sunlight. Best in a well-lit area.
Take your plant out of its plastic pot and position it in your pot. Add potting mix to bring the top of the root ball up to the top of your pot, then gently pack more potting mix around the root ball till the pot is full. Water well to help your plant settle in.
Most plants don’t enjoy being root bound in a small pot so ensure you select a pot that’s big enough. This will avoid cracking in ceramic pots.
TEAM
Rubber Fig - bright light but not direct sunlight. In summer keep moist and mist or wipe the leaves with a damp cloth. In winter only water once or twice a month.
Most plants prefer free draining soil and room to grow. Start by adding stones to the bottom of your pot. Allowing excess water to drain away. Don’t forget a pot saucer or ceramic pot feet to protect flooring from excess water.
Fill your pot about half-way with good quality potting mix. Be mindful of the type of soil your plant likes for best results.

FOR
GARDEN AND RURAL LIVING
PLANTING LOCAL ROOTS
There is debate in mainstream and social media about farmers' lack of care for the environment in which they work and live. In reality, a growing number of farmers are seriously passionate about their role as guardians of the land, and quietly work away in the background improving their patch and the biodiversity of their farms. Steve and Clare Dill, run a fifth generation 500ha farm with Steve’s parents Bruce and Felicity Dill in the Kaipara Hills, bordered by the Hōteo River and overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. In the time Steve has been on the land they have planted more than 15,000 plants and fenced 10.5ha of wetland and riparian margin to protect the river edge and to restore wetlands. Steve’s grandfather had previously fenced 40ha of native bush – well before it was a trendy thing to do. The plantings are targeted to reduce sediment and nutrient loss to the river and improve biodiversity. The Dills have started their own nursery to build up Manuka seedlings as well as Poplars that prevent erosion on steep hill country. Stephen and Clare have built up a small group of supporters that now help each year to increase
these planted areas. They feel this is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between urban and rural dwellers as volunteers come onto the farm to see the challenges of managing the terrain up close while having a yarn as well as a good feed and a beer afterwards.
Steve and Clare would like to see those living in the areas surrounded by rural land get connected with their local food producers and have an open conversation about the challenges they face and see first-hand the quality of product being created with just grass, water and sunshine.
“Volunteers are so important to us as it is only with their help that we can get this scale of work done,” says Steve.
“Every farm needs to be a fine balance – obviously we can’t just fence and plant it all as we need to use the land sustainably to produce an income as well,” says Clare. “It is about having the right plant or tree in the right place as well as the right animal. That way an ecosystem is created that can be financially and environmentally sustainable and that is where they think that New Zealand could really dominate on the global stage.”
Luke and Karen Williamson are two of the groups' core volunteers that return each year. “It’s easy to complain or worry about the state of the environment and New Zealand’s waterways, but it is so satisfying to get out and actually do something to help. Even if ours is only a small contribution, you realise, when Steve and Clare get a team together to plant a section of their farm, how quickly a group of people can plant up a significant section of land and start to make a real difference. And it’s fun! We meet new people, have a very physical morning and get to share lunch with everyone. We admire Steve and Clare’s dedication to good farming practices and love joining in their efforts to improve water quality in the Hoteo,” says Luke.
There are many landowners currently working on planting and would probably welcome a hand. Clare works with The Forest Bridge Trust and can put you in touch with landowners from the east to west coast that may need help with planting or even checking traplines, as with plantings comes an increase in pests! manager@theforestbridgetrust.org.nz www.theforestbridgetrust.org.nz

A PASSION FOR GROWING IN AN ISLAND PARADISE
Why not build two homes at once?
With the current housing shortage, a home & income property is a very smart move. Visit our new Showhome in Warkworth which incorporates a second dwelling - a great idea for grandparents, adult children, in-laws or just regular tenants! Nestled in the sundrenched Okiwi Basin in the north of Great Barrier Island is a magic piece of incredibly fertile land growing an abundance of high quality, organically grown produce, including a wide range of vegetables, bananas, cherimoya and more everyday fruit such as citrus, plums and apricots, available to both residents and visitors through a Produce Box subscription. They also grow a highly sought after microgreen-based salad for cafés and shops on the Island, and run a thriving small nursery producing organic vegetable, flower and herb seedlings. Caity and Gerald Endt started Okiwi Passion in 2007. They have a biological approach to growing, meaning that they nurture the beneficial fungi and bacteria in the soil by applying mulch from banna grass and bamboo grown on the property, compost made on site from garden waste, as well as natural rock based mineral fertilisers such as volcanic rock dust and dolomite lime.
They also deliberately plant insect attracting beds with sunflowers, phacelia, alyssum, coreopsis and coriander. The flowers attract bees as well as tiny parasitic and predatory wasps which help to control aphids and caterpillars. “It is important to create as much diversity as possible, both above and below ground, to create a more natural, balanced ecosystem,” says Gerald Endt, son of the late horticulturist, Dick Endt.
27 Jamish Drive, Warkworth In McKinney Estate - off Pulham road. Open Fridays & Sundays between 11 and 2pm, or any day by appointment. Call Dave 021 732 301

DESIGN
ARCHITECTURAL ELEGANCE MADE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL WORDS
Born in 2014, Mangawhai business ‘MyPad' is the brainchild of Sarah and Ben Lay - a collaborative husband and wife team who have utilised their extensive experience in architectural design and building to introduce elegance and simplicity to local homes. Adorned with the catchphrase ‘artfully simple,’ the MyPad business concept was born through Sarah and Ben's desire to simplify the design and build process. With a carefully designed ‘footprint' their goal has been to create homes with a seamless interior living flow and a graceful, pared back aesthetic. Far from an abstract design experiment, the footprint has been tested by Sarah and Ben, whose own home incorporates the same module sizes. As Sarah explains, "Our homes appeal to a wide variety of people, from a couple in their thirties with young children to a retired couple in their eighties. The homes are designed to be simple yet elegant, with an ease of living, suitable to the Mangawhai lifestyle.” The classic footprint encompasses a two bedroom, two bathroom home, with optional add-on features such as a third bedroom, boat-shed or sleep-out. MyPad is a member of the New Zealand Green Building Council - an organisation with a vision

towards creating a sustainable built environment. Following the council’s framework, MyPad offers Homestar certification: "a rating tool designed to make sure that Kiwi homes are healthy, warm, dry, sustainable and energy efficient places for New Zealanders to enjoy.” Internal Homestar design features might include dual-flush toilets and low-flow taps to minimise water waste while externally there are considerations such as photovoltaic panels for solar energy, or the careful positioning of the clothesline and vegetable garden plots to increase household efficiency. Designed with the future in mind, MyPad is also affiliated with Lifemark - the principle that homes are designed to be safe and usable for all ages and stages of life. MyPad’s user-friendly designs include considerations like wheelchair access and assistance railing. Working predominantly with a natural palette, MyPad designs are flexible and can be customised to client preferences and to respond specifically to the building site and environment. With the use of timbers such as American oak and cedar there is an emphasis on quality, durable materials which weather naturally. The same approach is reflected in the integral relationships that have been carefully built and maintained by Sarah
and Ben within the business: “The long standing relationships we have with our consultants, suppliers and subcontractors, built on trust, respect and quality, ensure the success and enjoyment of the building process for everybody involved.” There is no team of consultants; rather, Ben and Sarah are hands-on and concentrate on a small number of projects at a time, allowing for an attentive, client-focussed service from consultation to completion, and resulting in grateful, enthusiastic clients. Specialising in local projects, the couple are deeply connected to the area and have completed residential, rural and coastal builds. They are also involved in a community project where, with each house they build, three mature, native trees from Matakana based nursery Takana are donated to community spaces. Through offering a simple design, price and build package, MyPad have filled a much-anticipated gap in the Mangawhai market, allowing elegant architectural design to be accessible to all.

THE NEW WHARF STREET BISTRO Whether it’s a family get together, girls' cocktail night catchup or a cosy couples dinner, Wharf Street Bistro is famous for its great food and charismatic ambience. Overlooking the Mahurangi River, in the heart of Warkworth, serving up heart-warming food to their loyal locals and visitors alike. Opened in 2016 by Rachel and Matt Macfarlane, who were captivated by the location and set out to create ‘the place to go’. They were faced with motivating locals to dine out in Warkworth but were soon able to carve out a niche for themselves and gain a solid following. Tahlia Meharry has managed Wharf Street for the past eighteen months and when the opportunity to take over the restaurant came up she jumped at the chance, along with Andrew (Andy) Cameron, who has been managing the bar at the Bridgehouse for the past 10 years.
Both locally born and raised, they love the area that fostered their passion for good food, wine and beer. “Being together and having the same dream has pushed us to achieve this goal and we couldn’t be happier to continue and grow a local favourite.” They have seen the area change, grow and develop over the years from a sleepy country town and Tahlia and Andy say that “knowing such a great range of people and new businesses who employed us growing up really inspired us to own our own café/restaurant someday and create great, local food.” They are a small and dedicated young team, with their new Head Chef, Ashley Scale, helping them to create a memorable experience for each and every customer. “We love providing a quality food experience for our valued locals and visitors to our beautiful region, within Wharf Street’s warm and friendly vibe.”
“As foodies we appreciate good food, wine and beer - especially if it is locally sourced and produced.” Wharf Street has always prided itself on connecting with, supporting and being supported by local businesses. They offer a range of locally sourced meats, fish and organic produce. With four Sawmill Brewery beers on tap and an array of beautiful, locally produced wines on their menu you can’t help but feel spoiled for choice. “We can’t wait for Warkworth to become a bigger food, wine and beer destination and love being a part of a growing community.” For opening times check out their website, where you can book your table too!

FOOD WITH A VIEW: THE COVE CAFE If you are heading north and want to take in the sights then head out to Waipu Cove and stop in at the idyllic Cove Café. Sitting snuggled against the hill directly across the road from the fabulous Waipu Cove Beach, it is the perfect back-drop to stop and take a moment. Owners Lloyd and Mike, left farming in the Waikato to pursue a change. They missed the fast pace of hospitality and quickly found the challenge they were looking for in an old over 100 year old café in Waipu Cove. First challenge was refurbishments. “We wanted the Café to have a welcoming feel and with its covered outdoor space, you can sit on the bench or dine comfortably overlooking the beach and watch the day go by.” The Cove was the first restaurant for the boys who have now opened another five within the last few years. Most days you will find them working alongside the staff, as they divide their time between all six of their restaurants. The Cove Café has become a favourite for locals and out of towners who drive the tourist road just to stop in. Waipu Cove is a small community but it has become Lloyd and Mike's home. “We could have moved anywhere as our restaurants are spread out all over Northland and Mount Maunganui but there is nowhere as beautiful as Waipu Cove.” “Our success is our staff! We have a fantastic team, from our Executive Chef Craig who oversees all of our restaurants and menus, to our managers and wait staff, who have been with us for many years. Passion for food and great customer service are the secret components,” explains Lloyd. With many options available from gluten free through to their vegan menu, The Cove is designed to meet everyone's needs. Whether you are just passing by to grab a coffee, walking the beach and want great fish and chips (everyone raves about the batter) or are coming in for a three-course meal, with an extensive wine list and maybe even a cocktail or mocktail or two. 910 Cove Road, Waipu www.thecovecafe.co.nz

Gut health is critical to overall health and an unhealthy gut or poor function can be attributed to a vast range of illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, autoimmune conditions, systemic inflammation, skin disorders and even depression to name a few. Many researchers believe that supporting healthy gut function may be one of the most important aspects to maintaining overall good health for the future. There are two key areas to address when looking into optimal gut function, the intestinal gut flora (bacteria or microbiome) and the integrity of our gut lining or the barrier. Dysbiosis (or dysregulated gut bacteria) has been linked to many diseases such as autism, depression or autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s or IBD. Common threats to our microbiome include antibiotics, birth control and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti inflammatories), diets high in sugar and processed foods, diets low in fermentable fibre, dietary toxins like industrial seed oils and chronic stress. It is also crucial to maintain the integrity of our gut lining as one of its most important functions is to keep toxins and particles out of the body! Yes, most of the necessary absorption of nutrients happens in our gut, but when the ‘gaps’ in our gut lining become too wide, foreign particles can

cross through into our bloodstream causing a raft of problems. In order to prevent or adequately address these conditions, you must rebuild healthy gut flora and restore the integrity of your intestinal barrier. There are key areas to focus on: • Remove processed and refined foods from your diet. The chemicals in these foods - mostly indicated by three numbers in brackets on your food labels like (323), can reduce your gut bacteria and also cause gaps to form in the lining of your gut. • Maximise digestibility! Try 20mls of apple cider vinegar before meals. Not too much water with it though as it will dilute the benefits. Also, optimise stomach acid and digestive enzymes with an HCL/ digestive enzyme supplement. • Incorporate veggies with fermentable fiber like kumara, leeks, onions and garlic. These help to feed our healthy bacteria. *Those with bacterial overgrowth may need to avoid these vegetables. • Incorporate fermented foods (which have a diversity of bacteria in them), like sauerkraut, probiotic yoghurts, kefir or kimchi. Also include a good quality, multi strain probiotic daily. • Manage stress with quality sleep and mindful movement. Get to a yoga or meditation class, the benefits can be life changing! ana@analynch.nz www.analynch.nz

THE SHED SET TO BOLSTER MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH The search for a 'Men’s Shed' in Warkworth is over following the offer of a suitable building at Warkworth Showgrounds by the Warkworth A&P Society. Now that it is up and running, the shed will be a boon for men’s mental health and welfare and is a place where like-minded men have the chance to work with a range of woodworking, engineering and other tools and learn from each other. In a nutshell, the shed brings men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks. Men might choose to work on personal projects or work alongside others on projects that benefit the community. Examples so far have included building miniature libraries for the primary school, repairing furniture for those who need a helping hand or for community organisations like the Warkworth Trading Post or Mahurangi Wastebusters, fixing bikes, building raised vegetable gardens for community use and making predator traps and bird houses. The shed is a great place for blokes to learn new skills. “We see builders teaching engineers some of their skills and vice versa. We see accountants being shown many skills they never had the opportunity to learn in their working life,” says Chairman Barry Thompson. Following retirement, many couples suddenly find themselves with each other every waking and sleeping hour and this can cause friction. So, the shed is a great place to escape the stresses of “underfoot syndrome”, and the result is that women are among the most ardent supporters of sheds in New Zealand. Men are known to have a smaller circle of friends than women, so the shed offers opportunities to foster new friendships. Summerset Falls retirement village resident and shed enthusiast Glyn Williams points out that a Men’s Shed provides many men with a useful occupation.

“About a third of the residents at Summerset are retired gentlemen. They don’t want to sit around and rot in their rooms. Many of them are really good with their hands and have skills,” he says. While the building is designated a Men’s Shed, it’s also available to women so our more than 40 financial members include women. Mahurangi Wastebusters’ founder Trish Allen recognised that a Men’s Shed will complement efforts to establish a community recycling centre in the area. Many items such as unwanted bicycles and furniture can be restored and recycled at a Men’s Shed and then go on to benefit community organisations, rather than contributing to mounting landfill. Most of the necessary equipment for the shed has been donated – often from widows who have no further use for their husband’s tools and by receiving donations of building and excess carpentry materials these can all be used to produce useful items to benefit others. MASTERS RUGBY LEAGUE ALIVE AND WELL IN WHANGATEAU It just goes to show what a bit of vision and a lot of passion can achieve… Following the devastating fire that claimed the clubhouse of The Rodney Rams Rugby League Club in May 2014, resilience kicked in. A dedicated bunch of club members dug deep and worked tirelessly to rebuild the four walls that had previously housed the Northernmost Rugby League Club under the Auckland Rugby League (ARL) umbrella. The Rams have a very proud history of over 35 years at Whangateau and although they have encountered some trying times, their heart and determination always shines through. 2017 marked the turning point in the Clubs' Rugby League Rebuild, when players of a bygone era got their heads together and devised what would become the most anticipated event of the Club’s calendar. Rhys Epiha along with Mary Morunga, Henry Sylva and Angel Peihopa planned for a group of returning Rugby League players to host an Invitational Event at Whangateau versus Mount Wellington Warriors on 18 November, 2017. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended and was the conception of the Rodney Rams Master Rugby League Team that entered the ARL competition in 2018. Over the past two seasons the Rams' Masters Team has become very much part of the Northern ARL module and have bonded as a team of brothers that genuinely love the game of Rugby League. The support shown to the Masters whether they play at home or away is legendary. Friends, whanau, locals and many others involved in the Club have developed what has been dubbed a ‘Ramily’. On or off the field, there is a feeling of unity among the players and a strong sense of belonging among all those that cheer on the Rodney Rams. As the Masters’ 2019 season approaches its end, the Rodney Rams are looking forward to their next big event on Saturday 14 September which will see the Club host a family friendly Open Day with the intention of writing the next chapter in the Club’s history, and welcome Junior players to try Rugby League simulations alongside the Masters team and supported by a number of former Premier Players. Fun is the focus of the day and families will be encouraged to register their interest in representing the club in competition for the 2020 season. Check out the Rams’ Facebook page for more details or contact the Club’s Chairperson, Kahu Viliua via email.

THE BOYS’ CLUB
Mahurangi ICONZ started six years ago in Snells Beach, by the same guys that are running the group today. “We started this to meet the need in the local community for a faith and values based activity group for young boys. There is something special watching boys interacting, playing and learning from each other as a group,” says founder Steve Reynolds. ICONZ in New Zealand is run by the Boys Brigade and in Warkworth it used to be hugely successful. It ran for over three decades and regularly had over 200 boys attending on a Friday night. Today ICONZ is the new version and is an action, adventure, activity and values based programme for Kiwi boys. ICONZ allows boys to be boys, it’s a mixture of faith, mud, blood, fire, water, speed,

smash and build. The boys enjoy a range of action, fun, games, life skills, leadership and competition, all the stuff they are into, and need to become true Kiwi icons.
with some of the badges being completed in kayaking, swimming, camping, hunting, man versus wild, first aid, tramping, survival and a coast guard badge.
“We work on a badge system so the boys are always working toward completing a badge or skill based activity. For example, this term the ‘Adventure’ boys (8-11 years) are working on a ‘Worxz’ badge and had the privilege of visiting Skyworks, and the older ‘Xtreme’ boys (11-14 years) are working on a cooking badge, ‘Men in the Kitchen’, where we have local men/dads come and cook their signature dish and show the boys how to cook and prepare it. To complete the badge the boys also cook a meal twice for their whole family.”
The local ICONZ unit is run by and has oversight through Mahurangi Vineyard Church. All boys (and dads) are welcome and meet on Wednesday and Thursday nights in Snells Beach.

REAL LIFE RACING
What started out as a jovial conversation by several ‘previous generation’ or ‘past their prime’ petrol heads has turned into a fun, blow the cobwebs out, budget racing team. Real Life Racing was formed two years ago and serves two purposes: firstly to get blokes to meet and do life together as a group, with the support from their families, and secondly to smell the fumes again and go fast! “Blokes typically aren’t very good at ‘hanging out’ or spending time together unless there is a common purpose,” says organiser Steve Pound. Real Life Racing is connected to Mahurangi Vineyard Church and the group is intentional in creating space and time for guys to connect with each other on a regular basis – doing life together as it were, around a few racing cars.” What started out with six blokes and a desire to get on a race track has grown into a group of 18-25 men, fathers, sons and the occasional daughter, meeting every Tuesday night. Steve says, “LeMons race cars are typically worth less than $1000 plus all
the safety gear needed to remain alive. Having said that it is quite amazing how fast you can get it around the race track. It seems experience, kiwi ingenuity, time, scrap parts and a little know how can make a pocket rocket out of your average shopping basket!” The group currently have three budget race cars, a Honda Civic, Honda Accord and an MR2 but are are selling the MR2 and starting work on a new ‘Crazy Build’ to entertain the crowds at next years 24 hour event in May. LeMons racing is a budget racing series in New Zealand, holding three races a year. The main event is in May at Hampton Downs racetrack and is a continuous 24hour endurance race – the only one in New Zealand. If you’re interested in joining a group, which focuses on life’s journey and the racing, contact Steve. All are welcome! 022 198 6695 www.24lemons.co.nz

ART
ARTWORK WITH A DIFFERENCE
Connie Parkinson appears to be on a mission. She has launched a new company, ART @ SUCCESSIO, selling her cubism-inspired animal artwork drawings in limited editions...but she also wants her artworks to make a difference. Consequently, she has formed an alliance with Auckland Zoo’s Conservation Fund, and 10% of her sales go to support them and their very important work. Connie was born and grew up in Denmark, but – after also living in the UK and USA – has called New Zealand home for the past 25 years, and says she is rather passionate about this beautiful country at the bottom of the world. The work of ART @ SUCCESSIO brings together two long-time passions for Connie: animals and art in the forms of drawing and painting, which she has been doing on and off most of her life. She did have a long gap, though, where the focus was on being married and bringing up two kids alongside a corporate career. Despite still running businesses in Auckland with her husband
(and living on a rather large lot of land, needing attention), Connie says she now has a little more time on her hands and is therefore able to allocate the time and energy required to pursue this passion.
at Auckland Zoo’s Conservation Fund (www. aucklandzoo.co.nz/get-involved/conservation) the Fund that is behind the high-profile work on saving the flightless parrot, the Kakapo, from extinction.
Hoping not to sound too corny, Connie says she loves animals (or most animals!) and so finds it logical that her artworks should be inspired by these fellow inhabitants of planet Earth. As Connie states, “There are literally thousands of things we as humanity should do (and a lot we should have started doing yesterday) to clean up this planet; to make it a great place to live for ourselves, and to preserve it for future generations - humans and animals.”
So what might the future bring for Connie and ART @ SUCCESSIO? Connie laughs, “I have a whole noticeboard full of amazing animal pictures in my studio, providing inspiration for future drawings.” She is keen to explore working with a variety of mediums and on a larger scale. “I would love to some very large animal drawings - maybe 85x120cm.”
Therefore, she decided that proceeds from every piece of artwork sold (limited editions and commissioned work) will support a project or entity which is practically and actively doing something, somewhere to help. The first collaboration is with the passionate people
In the meantime, Connie is very happy with the artworks currently available and the support they offer to the Conservation Fund. As she says, “If we all take little steps in the right direction, we will get there in the end.” connie.parkinson@successio.co.nz www.successio.co.nz

MARK LEWINGTON’S ‘ALLEGED’ EXHIBITION OPENING
Mangawhai Artists opened an exhibition by Mark Lewington last month on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The show, entitled ‘Alleged’, acknowledged the conspiracy theories that still plague the moon landing, and featured vintage artworks wittily embellished with Mark’s trademark stencils, screen printing, vinyl cut-outs and hand-painting. Around 150 people enjoyed Sawmill Brewery and 8 Wired beer, Lothlorien and Te Rata wines and Matakana Oysters, while the multi-talented artist played DJ sets overlaid with recordings of the moon landing narrative.
